Harsh environment at high altitude may affect the mating system of plant species, especially those with wide ecological amplitude. Smaller effective neighbourhood size, less pollen and seed production, higher rate of inbreeding and a shift towards vegetative propagation may be involved. These changes can be reflected in spatial genetic structure (SGS). Populations of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] were analysed along an altitudinal cline to verify whether SGS increases with altitude. Three putatively autochthonous populations in Tyrol (Austria) at 800, 1,200 and 1,600?m above sea level (asl) were studied. Six highly polymorphic DNA markers (expressed sequence tag?Cderived simple sequence repeats, EST-SSRs) were used to genotype a total of 450 contiguous trees (150 trees per population). Loiselle??s kinship coefficient was used to quantify SGS. Against expectation no significant SGS was found in any of the populations, indicating a random spatial pattern. Significant SGS was observed when all populations were treated as a single one conforming to an isolation-by-distance pattern. Nearly identical allelic frequencies were found resulting in very small population differentiation (F ST?=?0.002). The fixation index decreased with diameter at breast height (a proxy for age) indicating natural selection against inbred trees. The results of this study indicate that seed and pollen dispersal mechanisms in Norway spruce are strongly counteracting spatial aggregation of similar genotypes even at high elevations.  相似文献

The extinction of the giant tortoises of the Seychelles Archipelago has long been suspected but is not beyond doubt. A recent morphological study of the giant tortoises of the western Indian Ocean concluded that specimens of two native Seychelles species survive in captivity today alongside giant tortoises of Aldabra, which are numerous in zoos as well as in the wild. This claim has been controversial because some of the morphological characters used to identify these species, several measures of carapace morphology, are reputed to be quite sensitive to captive conditions. Nonetheless, the potential survival of giant tortoise species previously thought extinct presents an exciting scenario for conservation. We used mitochondrial DNA sequences and nuclear microsatellites to examine the validity of the rediscovered species of Seychelles giant tortoises. Our results indicate that the morphotypes suspected to represent Seychelles species do not show levels of variation and genetic structuring consistent with long periods of reproductive isolation. We found no variation in the mitochondrial control region among 55 individuals examined and no genetic structuring in eight microsatellite loci, pointing to the survival of just a single lineage of Indian Ocean tortoises.  相似文献

The widely applied genetic differentiation statistics FST and GST have recently been criticized for underestimating differentiation when applied to highly polymorphic markers such as microsatellites. New statistics claimed to be unaffected by marker polymorphisms have been proposed and advocated to replace the traditional FST and GST. This study shows that GST gives accurate estimates and underestimates of differentiation when demographic factors are more and less important than mutations, respectively. In the former case, all markers, regardless of diversity (HS), have the same GST value in expectation and thus give replicated estimates of differentiation. In the latter case, markers of higher HS have lower GST values, resulting in a negative, roughly linear correlation between GST and HS across loci. I propose that the correlation coefficient between GST and HS across loci, rGH, can be used to distinguish the two cases and to detect mutational effects on GST. A highly negative and significant rGH, when coupled with highly variable GST values among loci, would reveal that marker GST values are affected substantially by mutations and marker diversity, underestimate population differentiation, and are not comparable among studies, species and markers. Simulated and empirical data sets are used to check the power and statistical behaviour, and to demonstrate the usefulness of the correlation analysis.  相似文献

In 1996 a farmhouse (villa rustica) was excavated near Pompeii (Naples, southern Italy). The villa had the typical characters of other farmhouses of the same period (ca A.D. 79) found in the area. The content of one of thedolia (storage vats) found in the cellar is discussed here and an interpretation of the assemblage is provided. The deposit found at the bottom of the storage vat produced a high percentage of seeds of plants known for their medicinal properties, such asPapaver somniferum (opium poppy). Associated with the residue there were also bones of reptiles and amphibians. It is suggested that the assemblage may represent the residue of a medicinal preparation. Its content includes many plants used in the preparation of ancient drugs calledMithridatium andTheriac. Further indirect archaeological evidence that supports this hypothesis will also be discussed.  相似文献

Humans have greatly altered the natural distribution of species, making it difficult to distinguish between natural and introduced populations. This is a problem for conservation efforts because native or introduced status can determine whether a species is afforded protection or persecuted as an invasive pest. Holocene colonization events are especially difficult to discern, particularly when the species in question is a naturally good disperser and widely transported by people. In this study, we test the origin of such a species, the diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin), on Bermuda using a combination of palaeontologic (fossil, radiometric and palaeoenvironmental) and genetic data. These lines of evidence support the hypothesis that terrapins are relatively recent (between 3000 and 400 years ago) natural colonizers of Bermuda. The tiny population of Bermudian terrapins represents the second naturally occurring non-marine reptile that still survives on one of the most densely populated and heavily developed oceanic islands in the world. We recommend that they should be given protection as a native species.  相似文献

We present a range-wide synthesis of our own research and related work on the complex postglacial history of Abies alba Mill. It is based on macroremains, fossil pollen records as well as on different genetic markers. The geographic distribution of genetic lineages and allele frequencies together with the fossil records confirm multiple refugia with at least three of them being sources for the Holocene range expansion into Central Europe, representing so-called effective refugia. One is located in the northern Apennines. A long-term refugium in the southern Balkans contributes to northward expansion with a branch along the Carpathians in the East and the Dinaric Alps in the West. Furthermore, new allozyme data indicate a third effective refugium in the northern or western Balkans, respectively. Using different genetic marker categories the differentiation of A. alba populations could be attributed to different time scales. A separation of maternal lineages took place in previous glacial cycles of the Quaternary, while a second pattern of genetic differentiation is the result of isolation processes during the last glaciation and subsequent gene flow after range expansion. Suture and introgression zones of refugial gene pools were clearly recognised. The patterns of genetic variation and genetic diversity spanning between rear and leading edges of the present range are discussed for evolutionary implications and conservation strategies.  相似文献

In 1980 the entire black robin species Petroica traversi comprised only five birds, and the current population of ≊ 200 individuals is known to be derived from a single breeding pair. We show here that levels of minisatellite DNA variation in the black robin are among the lowest reported for any avian species in the wild. Surprisingly, similarly bottlenecked control populations of a closely related species ( P. australis australis ) exhibit significantly higher levels of genetic variation. This suggests that the black robin's persistence in a single small population for the last 100 years, rather than the recent bottleneck itself, accounts for the low genetic variation observed. Despite apparent genetic impoverishment, survival and reproductive performance indicate that the black robin is viable under existing conditions. This example illustrates that significant levels of genetic variation are not a necessary prerequisite for endangered species' survival.  相似文献

This paper reviews the evidence from terrestrial palaeoenvironmental records in north-central Europe and, in particular, central Germany, which relates to the controversial proposition that there were strong climate oscillations during the last interglacial (oxygen isotope substage 5e). In contrast to the evidence from the GRIP ice core at Summit, Greenland, and a recent palaeoclimate reconstruction based on the pollen profile from Bispingen, Germany, the evaluation of the palaeobotanical and the stable isotope data presented here strongly suggests relatively stable temperature for most of the Eemian and with instability confined to the beginning and end of the interglacial. High amplitude temperature variations can be seen in both the Early Weichselian pollen and isotope records. It is argued that this pattern of climate development is applicable to most of continental north-central Europe.  相似文献

Different patterns of mitochondrial and Y-chromosome diversity have been cited as evidence of long-term patrilocality in human populations. However, what patterns are expected depends on the nature of the sampling scheme. Samples from a local region reveal only the recent demographic history of that region, whereas sampling over larger geographic scales accesses older demographic processes. A historical change in migration becomes evident first at local geographic scales, and alters global patterns of genetic diversity only after sufficient time has passed. Analysis of forager populations in the ethnographic record suggests that patrilocality may not have predominated among pre-agricultural humans. The higher female migration rate inferred by some genetic studies may reflect a shift to patrilocality in association with the emergence of agriculture. A recent global survey does not show the expected effects of higher female migration, possibly because the sampling scheme used for this study is accessing pre-agricultural human migration patterns. In this paper, we show how the demographic shift associated with agriculture might affect genetic diversity over different spatial scales. We also consider the prospects for studying sex-biased migration using the X-linked and autosomal markers. These multi-locus comparisons have the potential of providing more robust estimates of sex differences than Y-linked and mitochondrial data, but only if a very large number of loci are included in the analysis.  相似文献

We examine the variability of riverine fish assemblages in terms of assemblage stability (i.e. variability of numbers of individuals within species over time and variability of assemblage total density), assemblage persistence, and assemblage species richness using data from a 9-yr survey of 27 sites within 18 coastal streams of North-western France. To do so, we test a hypothesized directional model for the expected relationships between environmental variability, assemblage variability, assemblage persistence, and assemblage species richness: 1) environmental variability within a given system is likely to generate variable local population size within this system, thus increasing local assemblages variability; 2) environmental variability should increase extinction rates (or, under constant colonization rates, decrease persistence), because the more population sizes vary within an assemblage, the more likely they are to become zero in some period of time; 3) assemblage variability should reduce assemblage species richness by increasing extinction rates within populations composing these assemblages. Results are compatible with our starting hypotheses and show that assemblage variability increased with environmental variability (i.e. discharge variability), that assemblage persistence decreased with environmental variability, and that species richness decreased with assemblage variability after environmental factors were controlled for. Thus, disturbance regimes, in our case, can alter the stability properties of assemblages and extrinsic determinants of assemblage variability may be an important determinant of assemblage species richness. These results have important conservation and management implications, due to the strong impact of river regulation on flow regimes.  相似文献
