The aim of this study was to evaluate body iron stores as predictors of insulin resistance. We developed a cross-sectional
study among 123 men, 25–64 years of age and determined fasting plasma glucose, insulin, serum ferritin, and C-reactive protein
levels. A survey was performed to record personal antecedents and family history of non-transmissible chronic diseases. Log-transformed
ferritin levels was an independent predictor for log-transformed insulin resistance index assessed by homeostatic model assessment
when body mass index or waist circumference were not included in multiple linear regression models. Sedentarism, heart attack
family history, and log-C reactive protein levels were also significant predictors for insulin resistance. In conclusion,
documented anthropometric predictors affect the significance of ferritin as a potential prediction variable for insulin resistance.
Mechanisms of how body fat could influence ferritin levels should be evaluated. To our knowledge, this is the first evaluation

Although waist circumference (WC) is a marker of visceral adipose tissue (VAT), WC cut‐points are based on BMI category. We compared WC‐BMI and WC‐VAT relationships in blacks and whites. Combining data from five studies, BMI and WC were measured in 1,409 premenopausal women (148 white South Africans, 607 African‐Americans, 186 black South Africans, 445 West Africans, 23 black Africans living in United States). In three of five studies, participants had VAT measured by computerized tomography (n = 456). Compared to whites, blacks had higher BMI (29.6 ± 7.6 (mean ± s.d.) vs. 27.6 ± 6.6 kg/m2, P = 0.001), similar WC (92 ± 16 vs. 90 ± 15 cm, P = 0.27) and lower VAT (64 ± 42 vs. 101 ± 59 cm2, P < 0.001). The WC‐BMI relationship did not differ by race (blacks: β (s.e.) WC = 0.42 (.01), whites: β (s.e.) WC = 0.40 (0.01), P = 0.73). The WC‐VAT relationship was different in blacks and whites (blacks: β (s.e.) WC = 1.38 (0.11), whites: β (s.e.) WC = 3.18 (0.21), P < 0.001). Whites had a greater increase in VAT per unit increase in WC. WC‐BMI and WC‐VAT relationships did not differ among black populations. As WC‐BMI relationship did not differ by race, the same BMI‐based WC guidelines may be appropriate for black and white women. However, if WC is defined by VAT, race‐specific WC thresholds are required. 相似文献

Objectives : This study examines genetic and behavioral determinants of waist-hip ratio (WHR) and waist circumference among women twins. Research Methods and Procedures : Six hundred eighty participants from the second examination of the Kaiser-Permanente Women Twins Study (1989 to 1990) were included. Women ranged in age from 31 to 90 years, and included 59% monozygotic and 41% dizygotic twins. Heritabilities of WHR and waist circumference were estimated (range = 0 to 1) using three different statistical methods. Linear regression models that adjusted for the lack of independence within twin pairs were used to assess associations between behavioral variables, WHR, and waist circumference. Results : Age and body mass index-adjusted heritability estimates ranged from 0.36 to 0.61 for WHR and 0.72 to 0.82 for waist circumference. When considered individually, after adjusting for age and body mass index, all behavioral characteristics, except calorie-adjusted fat intake, were significantly (p<0.10) associated with waist circumference and WHR. Greater central adiposity was associated with lower education, higher alcohol consumption, lower physical activity, current cigarette smoking, higher parity, and postmenopausal status without hormone replacement therapy. In multivariate models, these associations persisted, except neither educational attainment nor alcohol intake was significantly associated with waist circumference. In longitudinal analyses, both measures were positively associated with current or recent-past smoking; infrequent or inconsistent physical activity; and long-term, daily consumption of alcohol. Discussion : These cross-sectional and longitudinal associations are consistent with genetic and behavioral predictors of waist circumference and WHR. Whereas the evidence for genetic influences is stronger for waist circumference, both body fat measures may be similarly influenced by the behavioral factors considered. 相似文献

Objective: Measurement of waist circumference alone as a proxy of abdominal fat mass has been suggested as a simple clinical alternative to BMI for detecting adults with possible health risks due to obesity. Research Methods and Procedures: From 1993 to 1997, 27, 178 men and 29, 875 women, born in Denmark, 50 to 64 years of age, were recruited in the Danish prospective study Diet, Cancer and Health. By the end of the year 2000, 1465 deaths had occurred. We evaluated the relationship between waist circumference and BMI (simultaneously included in the model) and all‐cause mortality. We used Cox regression models to estimate the mortality‐rate ratios and to consider possible confounding from smoking. Results: Waist circumference among both men and women showed a strong dose‐response type of relationship with mortality when adjusted for BMI, whereas the low range of BMI was inversely associated with mortality when adjusted for waist circumference. A 10% larger waist circumference corresponded to a 1.48 (95% confidence interval: 1.36 to 1.61) times higher mortality over the whole range of waist circumference. The associations were independent of age and time since baseline examination. Restriction to never smokers showed a similar pattern, but a weakening of the associations. Discussion: Despite the high correlation between waist circumference and BMI, the combination may be very relevant in clinical practice because waist circumference for given BMI was a strong predictor of all‐cause mortality. The inverse association between BMI and mortality for given waist circumference was diminished in never smokers, particularly for high values of BMI. 相似文献

Background
In the same period as the increasing obesity epidemic, there has been an increased consumption of highly processed foods with a high salt content, and a few studies have suggested that a diet with a high salt content may be associated with obesity.Objective
To investigate the association between 24 h urinary sodium excretion and subsequent change in body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC), body fat (BF) and fat free mass (FFM) among adults.Design
A longitudinal population study based on the Danish part of the MONICA project, with examinations in 1987–1988 and 1993–1994. Complete information on 24 h urinary sodium excretion along with repeated measures of obesity, as well as on potential confounders, was obtained from 215 subjects. Linear regression was used to examine the association between sodium excretion, as a measure of salt consumption, and subsequent changes in BW, WC, BF and FFM, and further evaluated by restricted cubic splines. Stepwise adjustments were made for selected covariates.Results
Neither the crude nor the adjusted models showed any statistically significant associations between sodium excretion and change in BW or WC. Likewise, we found no significant association between sodium excretion and change in BF and FFM in the unadjusted models. However, after adjusting for potential baseline confounders and the concurrent BW change, we found a significant increase in BF of 0.24 kg (P = 0.015, CI: 0.05 to 0.43) per 100 mmol increase in 24 h urinary sodium excretion (equivalent to 6 g of salt), during the 6-year study period. Moreover, during the same period, we found a significant association with FFM of −0.21 kg (P = 0.041, CI: −0.40 to −0.01).Conclusions
These results suggest that a diet with a high salt content may have a negative influence on development in body composition by expanding BF and reducing FFM. 相似文献8.

Background
Genetic predisposition to adiposity may interact with dietary protein in relation to changes of anthropometry.Objective
To investigate the interaction between genetic predisposition to higher body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) or waist-hip ratio adjusted for BMI (WHRBMI) and dietary protein in relation to subsequent change in body weight (ΔBW) or change in WC (ΔWC).Design
Three different Danish cohorts were used. In total 7,054 individuals constituted the study population with information on diet, 50 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with BMI, WC or WHRBMI, as well as potential confounders. Mean follow-up time was ∼5 years. Four genetic predisposition-scores were based on the SNPs; a complete-score including all selected adiposity- associated SNPs, and three scores including BMI, WC or WHRBMI associated polymorphisms, respectively. The association between protein intake and ΔBW or ΔWC were examined and interactions between SNP-score and protein were investigated. Analyses were based on linear regressions using macronutrient substitution models and meta-analyses.Results
When protein replaced carbohydrate, meta-analyses showed no associations with ΔBW (41.0 gram/y/5 energy% protein, [95% CI: −32.3; 114.3]) or ΔWC (<−0.1 mm/y/5 energy % protein, [−1.1; 1.1]). Similarly, there were no interactions for any SNP-scores and protein for either ΔBW (complete SNP-score: 1.8 gram/y/5 energy% protein/risk allele, [−7.0; 10.6]) or ΔWC (complete SNP-score: <0.1 mm/y/5 energy% protein/risk allele, [−0.1; 0.1]). Similar results were seen when protein replaced fat.Conclusion
This study indicates that the genetic predisposition to general and abdominal adiposity, assessed by gene-scores, does not seem to modulate the influence of dietary protein on ΔBW or ΔWC. 相似文献9.

The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA)‐derived fat mass indices for predicting blood lipid profile in postmenopausal women. A secondary purpose was to determine whether waist circumference is comparable with DXA‐derived measurements in predicting blood lipid profile. Subjects were 423 postmenopausal women (age 58.1 ± 6.3 years). Fat mass was assessed at abdomen, trunk, and total body using DXA. Anthropometric measurements included BMI and waist circumference. Blood samples were analyzed for total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TAG), high‐density lipoprotein (HDL), low‐density lipoprotein (LDL), and cholesterol/HDL ratio. Of the DXA‐derived measures, abdominal‐fat mass was the best predictor of blood lipid profiles. DXA‐derived abdominal fat mass and waist girth explained 20 and 16.5% of variation in TC/HDL ratio, respectively, in univariate analysis, with no difference between the slopes of the regression coefficients. Eighty‐four percent of subjects were common to the top quartiles of waist circumference and abdominal fat mass, and blood lipid profiles generally worsened across increasing quartiles. DXA‐derived abdominal fat mass and waist circumference are of equivalent utility for predicting alterations in blood lipids. Waist circumference is, therefore, ideal as an inexpensive means in primary health‐care services for predicting risk of cardiovascular diseases in postmenopausal women. 相似文献

relationship between these results and Fe stores. Only 1/163, 6/185, and 7/120 had iron deficiency anemia in DM2 patients,
MS subjects, and controls, respectively. No iron overload (ferritin >200 μg/L) was detected in all the subjects studied. DM2
patients had higher iron deposits, total body iron, and heme oxygenase activity (a suggestion of high oxidative stress condition)
than MS subjects and controls. In DM2, we found a positive association between serum iron and HO activity. There were no difference
in allelic frequency between the three groups; however, among DM2 and MS patients, the frequency of short/medium (SM) genotype

Objective: The association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and waist circumference (WC) is still controversial, especially from the perspective of sex differences. We aimed to explore the impact of sex on this relationship in a large Chinese cohort.Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 13,505 healthy participants (8,346 males, 5,159 females) who were enrolled in a health check program. Clinical data were collected. The association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and WC of both sexes was analyzed separately after dividing WC into quartiles. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated by binary logistic regression models, and linear regression analysis was also performed.Results: The prevalence rates of subclinical hyper-and hypothyroidism were significantly lower in males. Binary logistic regression models showed that WC in females with subclinical hypothyroidism had a detrimental effect with an OR of 1.011, but the effect disappeared when we included other covariates. The other ORs indicated no significant effects. The weak negative relationship between WC and thyrotropin was also indicated by linear regression analyses with very low R2 values.Conclusion: The current research did not show WC as a risk factor for subclinical thyroid dysfunction in either sex. Background
It has been suggested that exercise training results in compensatory mechanisms that attenuate weight loss. However, this has only been examined with large doses of exercise. The goal of this analysis was to examine actual weight loss compared to predicted weight loss (compensation) across different doses of exercise in a controlled trial of sedentary, overweight or obese postmenopausal women (n = 411).Methodology/Principal Findings
Participants were randomized to a non-exercise control (n = 94) or 1 of 3 exercise groups; exercise energy expenditure of 4 (n = 139), 8 (n = 85), or 12 (n = 93) kcal/kg/week (KKW). Training intensity was set at the heart rate associated with 50% of each woman''s peak VO2 and the intervention period was 6 months. All exercise was supervised. The main outcomes were actual weight loss, predicted weight loss (exercise energy expenditure/ 7700 kcal per kg), compensation (actual minus predicted weight loss) and waist circumference. The study sample had a mean (SD) age 57.2 (6.3) years, BMI of 31.7 (3.8) kg/m2, and was 63.5% Caucasian. The adherence to the intervention was >99% in all exercise groups. The mean (95% CI) weight loss in the 4, 8 and 12 KKW groups was −1.4 (−2.0, −0.8), −2.1 (−2.9, −1.4) and −1.5 (−2.2, −0.8) kg, respectively. In the 4 and 8 KKW groups the actual weight loss closely matched the predicted weight loss of −1.0 and −2.0 kg, respectively, resulting in no significant compensation. In the 12 KKW group the actual weight loss was less than the predicted weight loss (−2.7 kg) resulting in 1.2 (0.5, 1.9) kg of compensation (P<0.05 compared to 4 and 8 KKW groups). All exercise groups had a significant reduction in waist circumference which was independent of changes in weight.Conclusion
In this study of previously sedentary, overweight or obese, postmenopausal women we observed no difference in the actual and predicted weight loss with 4 and 8 KKW of exercise (72 and 136 minutes respectively), while the 12 KKW (194 minutes) produced only about half of the predicted weight loss. However, all exercise groups had a significant reduction in waist circumference which was independent of changes in weight.Trial Registration

It is suggested that a large breast size among women may predict type 2 diabetes risk independent of BMI and waist circumference (WC). The purpose of this study was to determine the independent associations of breast volume with cardiometabolic risk factors and regional fat distribution. A total of 92 overweight or obese premenopausal women (age = 39.9 ± 6.8 years) underwent full‐body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the assessment of breast volume, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), abdominal and lower‐body subcutaneous AT (SAT), and intermuscular AT (IMAT), a 2‐h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and fasting phlebotomy for assessment of triglyceride, total, high‐density lipoprotein–, and low‐density lipoprotein–cholesterol levels. Breast volume was not associated with any of the cardiometabolic risk factors assessed (P > 0.05). However, VAT was consistently associated with a number of cardiometabolic risk factors (OGTT glucose, OGTT insulin, and triglyceride levels) after controlling for age, BMI, WC, breast volume, and the other AT depots. In univariate models, breast volume was positively associated with VAT, IMAT, and abdominal and lower‐body SAT (P < 0.05). After controlling for age, BMI, and WC level, breast volume remained positively associated with VAT and IMAT (P < 0.05), such that women with the highest breast volume had ~1.1 and 1.3 kg more VAT and IMAT, respectively, but no more abdominal or lower‐body SAT, by comparison to women with the smallest breast volume. Thus, the previously documented association between breast size and type 2 diabetes risk may be in part explained by excess VAT and/or IMAT deposition. 相似文献

Objective: To assess whether changes in total and regional adiposity affect the odds for becoming hypercholesterolemic. Methods and Procedures: Changes in BMI and waist circumference were compared to self‐reported physician‐diagnosed hypercholesterolemia in 24,397 men and 10,023 women followed prospectively in the National Runners' Health Study. Results: Incident hypercholesterolemia were reported by 3,054 men and 519 women during (mean ± s.d.) 7.8 ± 1.8 and 7.5 ± 2.0 years of follow‐up, respectively. Despite being active, men's BMI increased by 1.15 ± 1.71 kg/m2 and women's BMI increased by 0.96 ± 1.89 kg/m2. The odds for developing hypercholesterolemia increased significantly in association with gains in BMI and waist circumferences in both sexes. A gain in BMI ≥2.4 kg/m2 significantly (P < 0.0001) increased the odds for hypercholesterolemia by 94% in men and 129% in women compared to those whose BMI declined (40 and 76%, respectively, adjusted for average of the baseline and follow‐up BMI, P < 0.0001). A gain of ≥6 cm in waist circumference increased men's odds for hypercholesterolemia by 74% (P < 0.0001) and women's odds by 70% (P < 0.0001) relative to those whose circumference declined (odds increased 40% at P < 0.0001 and 49% at P < 0.01, respectively adjusted for average circumference). BMI and waist circumference at the end of follow‐up were significantly associated (P < 0.0001) with the log odds for hypercholesterolemia in both men (e.g., coefficient ± s.e.: 0.115 ± 0.011 per kg/m2) and women (e.g., 0.119 ± 0.019 per kg/m2) when adjusted for baseline values, whereas baseline BMI and circumferences were unrelated to the log odds when adjusted for follow‐up values. Background
To investigate single and joint associations of body mass index (BMI) and serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) with death.Methods
The study included 1871 coronary artery disease (CAD) patients aged 40–85 year-old recruited from 2008 to 2011. Cox regression models were used to estimate the association of BMI and hsCRP with mortality. The data was analyzed in 2014.Results
During 3.1 years follow-up, 141 deaths were recorded, 110 died of cardiovascular disease (CVD). After adjustment of major CVD risk factors, there was a J-shaped association between BMI and all-cause and CVD mortality, and a positive association between hsCRP and mortality. The J-shaped association of BMI with mortality was present among patients who never smoked or with elevated hsCRP (≥3.0 mg/L). Compared with overweight (BMI 24–27.9 kg/m2) patients with normal hsCRP (<3.0 mg/L), obese patients (BMI≥28 kg/m2) with elevated hsCRP had a 3.41-fold risk of all-cause mortality (95% CI 1.49–7.80) and a 3.50-fold risk of CVD mortality (1.40–8.75), lean patients (BMI<24 kg/m2) with elevated hsCRP concentration had a 2.54-fold risk of all-cause mortality (1.36–4.74) and a 2.36-fold risk of CVD mortality (1.19–4.70).Conclusions
The association pattern between baseline BMI and mortality changed among different baseline hsCRP concentrations, indicating that low-grade inflammation may be related to BMI and secondary prognosis of CAD. 相似文献18.

Hypertension is becoming a global epidemic for both rural and urban populations; it is a major public health challenge in Iran. Fluoride can be a risk factor for hypertension. Cross-sectional analysis was conducted in two study areas to assess the relation of fluoride with blood pressure prevalence, BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) among different age groups in both sexes. The mean value of fluoride concentration in the drinking water from the four study villages varied from 0.68 to 10.30 mg/L. The overall prevalence of HTN and prehypertension in all subjects was 40.7%. The prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension, isolated diastolic hypertension, systolic-diastolic hypertension, and prehypertension in the total sample population was 1.15, 0.28, 9.53, and 29.76%, respectively. The odd ratio of hypertension in residents who drank water with high fluoride levels was higher than that in residents who drank water with lower level of fluoride (OR 2.3, 1.03–5.14). Logistic regression results showed that age (P?<?0.001), sex (P?=?0.018), BMI (P?=?0.015), and the fluoride level in drinking water (P?=?0.041) had a significant relationship with increased blood pressure. There were no statistically significant correlations between fluoride and BMI, hip circumference, and waist to hip ratio (WHR). Background
The evidence that individual dietary and lifestyle factors influence a person’s weight and waist circumference is well established; however their combined impact is less well documented. Therefore, we investigated the combined effect of physical activity, nutrition and smoking status on prospective gain in body weight and waist circumference.Methods
We used data of the prospective EPIC-PANACEA study. Between 1992 and 2000, 325,537 participants (94,445 men and 231,092 women, aged between 25–70) were recruited from nine European countries. Participants were categorised into two groups (positive or negative health behaviours) for each of the following being physically active, adherent to a healthy (Mediterranean not including alcohol) diet, and never-smoking for a total score ranging from zero to three. Anthropometric measures were taken at baseline and were mainly self-reported after a medium follow-up time of 5 years.Results
Mixed-effects linear regression models adjusted for age, educational level, alcohol consumption, baseline body mass index and follow-up time showed that men and women who reported to be physically active, never-smoking and adherent to the Mediterranean diet gained over a 5-year period 537 (95% CI −706, −368) and 200 (−478, −87) gram less weight and 0.95 (−1.27, −0.639) and 0.99 (−1.29, −0.69) cm less waist circumference, respectively, compared to participants with zero healthy behaviours.Conclusion
The combination of positive health behaviours was associated with significantly lower weight and waist circumference gain. 相似文献20.
