Background

Temporal visual processing is strongly deteriorated in patients with schizophrenia. For example, the interval required between a visual stimulus and a subsequent mask has to be much longer in schizophrenic patients than in healthy controls. We investigated whether this deficit in temporal resolution is accompanied by prolonged visual persistence and/or deficient temporal precision (temporal asynchrony perception).

Methodology/Principal Findings

We investigated visual persistence in three experiments. In the first, measuring temporal processing by so-called backward masking, prolonged visible persistence is supposed to decrease performance. In the second experiment, requiring temporal integration, prolonged persistence is supposed to improve performance. In the third experiment, we investigated asynchrony detection, as another measure of temporal resolution. Eighteen patients with schizophrenia and 15 healthy controls participated. Asynchrony detection was intact in the patients. However, patients'' performance was inferior compared to healthy controls in the first two experiments. Hence, temporal processing in schizophrenic patients is indeed significantly impaired but this impairment is not caused by prolonged temporal integration.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results argue against a generally prolonged visual persistence in patients with schizophrenia. Together with the preserved ability of patients, to detect temporal asynchronies in permanently presented stimuli, the results indicate a more specific deficit in temporal processing of schizophrenic patients.  相似文献

The accuracy and time of motor response in tests for visual recognition of simple (sets of horizontal and vertical lines, angles, and crosses) and complex (contour images of animate and inanimate objects) images forward-masked with stimuli of varying complexity were estimated in psychophysiological experiments. It was found that forward masking impaired recognition, the mask whose complexity was close to that of the given test image being the most efficient in each particular case. The masking effect was the strongest in the experiments where the sets of test and masking images coincided. Recognition of complex images proved to be more resistant to masking than recognition of simple images. The observed effects of forward masking are assumed to be determined by lateral inhibition and changes in the excitability cycle. The relative contributions of these mechanisms depend on the degree of similarity between the test and masking stimuli, as well as the hierarchical level of the visual cortex at which the test stimulus is “targeted.”  相似文献

We measured recognition thresholds of incomplete figure perception (the Gollin test). This test we regarded as a visual masking problem. Digital image processing permits us to measure the spatial properties and spatial frequency spectrum of the absent part of the image as the mask. Using a noise paradigm, we have measured the signal/noise ratio for Incomplete Figure. Recognition was worse with better spectral "similarity" between the figure and the "invisible" mask. At threshold, the spectrum of the fragmented image was equally similar to that of the "invisible" mask and complete image. We think the recognition thresholds for Gollin stimuli reflect the signal/noise ratio.  相似文献

34例听觉正常受试者(共48耳)进行疏波短声诱发性耳声发射(EOAE)掩蔽实验,项目包括同侧同时掩蔽、同侧后掩蔽和对倒后掩蔽。同时掩蔽的掩蔽声是稳态白噪声,后掩蔽的掩蔽声是宽带噪声。同侧同时掩蔽强度达30dBSL时,未观察到对EOAE的掩蔽效应,但对主观听觉感受有掩蔽作用,表明EOAE的客观属性反映听觉行为有其局限性、同侧及对侧后掩蔽出现掩蔽效应时的掩蔽强度分别为30和50dBSL,掩蔽阈约分别为59和68dBSL。耳蜗的机械特性-非线性或耳蜗内存在的某种功能性的反馈调节系统可能是同侧后掩蔽的作用机理。下行的对侧橄榄耳蜗内侧束对外毛细胞主动收缩的抑制性作用,可有效解释对倒后掩蔽的EOAE变化。  相似文献

Identification by healthy subjects of single letters in conditions of backward masking was studied at lateralized presentation of stimuli. Both at dichoptic and unilateral presentations, the letters are identified better if they are presented in the left visual field, i.e. addressed "directly" to the right hemisphere. It is suggested that the data obtained result from the specificity of hemispheres' cooperation under difficult conditions of visual-spatial stage of information processing.  相似文献

Psychophysiological experiments were carried out to study the probability and latency of the recognition of significant and insignificant stimuli, namely, partially masked images of household items during their tachystoscopic presentation to subjects with normal vision. Data on a group of 16 subjects showed that the probability of recognition of significant stimuli was substantially higher as compared to the recognition of insignificant stimuli. The recognition latencies for significant stimuli were significantly higher as compared to insignificant stimuli. These effects were found using analysis of the distribution of the respective values and ANOVA. We did not find any gender effects. We suppose that these differences were related to a longer and more detailed recall and comparison of significant stimuli with other images of the set used, as well as to the effect of selective visual attention and interaction between the recognitions of significant and insignificant stimuli on the final result of identification of images.  相似文献

In psychophysical and neurophysiological experiments, the subjects recognized images of two categories, “animals” and “objects.” The images of the same categories differing from the target stimuli were used as the masking stimuli. We found that the efficacy of forward-masking depended on categorical similarity of the masking and target stimuli. The probability of a correct response was lower and the reaction time and its variance were higher when we used stimuli of the same category compared with presentation of stimuli of different categories. Categorical similarity of masking and target stimuli induced difficulties with response, which were accompanied by decreases in the amplitudes of the N2 and P3 components of the evoked potentials. These effects were more pronounced during recognition of animals compared to objects. The results are discussed from the point of view of negative priming and the distractor effect.  相似文献

We studied the dependence of correct response number, response time, and the main characteristics of visual evoked potentials on the time of the stimuli presenting. The coincidence of the recognition temporal thresholds and occurrence of differences in the visual EPs suggests that the temporal characteristics of these processes differ in different subjects. Recognition of shape of natural objects was studied during lateralized tachistoscopic presentation and different degree of noise-like ("rain drops") masking in 15 healthy subjects. Two sets of figures were used: halftone and contour ones. In all masking conditions, the mean group data showed a significantly better recognition of contour images by the left hemisphere as compared to the right hemisphere. The probability of correct response decreased with increase in the degree of masking. Contour figures were recognized significantly better than halftone figures. Gender differences in recognition were revealed. Male subjects displayed no hemispheric preference in recognition of both types of stimuli in both masking conditions. Possible neurophysiological mechanisms and functional significance of the findings are discussed.  相似文献

In 30 healthy subjects and 32 patients after the first episode of schizophrenia 19 channel-EEG was recorded during visual presentation of a random sequence of words and pseudo-words. In the first series of the experiments, subjects had to read the presented verbal stimuli, in the second series they had to press a button when seeing a word, and in the third series they were instructed to press the button when seeing a pseudo-word. We studied components N170, P300 and N400. In the group of healthy subjects, the amplitude of N170 increased to words in the situation of their relevance, which corresponds to the "recognition potential", whereas in the group of patients, the amplitude of N170 increased to pseudo-words when they were relevant. So it was a paradoxical response. The amplitude of the ERP later waves (P300 and N400) in the group of schizophrenic patients was smaller and the relevance effect was impaired when the target stimuli were pseudo-words. However, the incongruity effect consisting in an increase in N400 amplitude to a non-target stimulus remained intact in patients.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine experimentally effects of low level, modulated microwaves on human central nervous system function utilizing the phenomenon of visual masking. Ten healthy volunteers, four males and six females, were exposed to electromagnetic field (450 MHz, 0.16 mW/cm2) with 7 Hz modulation frequency. Two photo series (visual stimuli) of unfamiliar, young male faces were presented to the subjects, one picture after another. All the photos were frontal views of unfamiliar faces, which could be recognized only by their unique combinations of features. The task was to identify the pictures from a group of six photos and to decide which order they were presented in. The phenomenon of visual masking is revealed as anamorphosis in subject's perception of two instantaneous visual stimuli presented within a short time interval. When both stimuli were to be recognized correctly and put in the right order, there was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) between the identification of the stimulus with microwave electromagnetic field and sham exposure. Recognition of both stimuli in a pair was better under the sham exposure conditions but the actual difference was only 5%. It was concluded that early stages of visual information processing are overwhelmingly robust and routine (and adaptively significant) activities, so that the low level 7 Hz modulated electromagnetic field effects exerted upon it are extremely weak.  相似文献

Detection and identification thresholds for grating targets were measured in the presence of a compound mask grating as a function of the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA). The detection and identification SOA functions are both reversed U-shaped but they are not parallel. The detection-to-identification ratio is itself a reversed U-shaped function of SOA, even for stimuli two octaves apart, with a peak between +20 and +60 ms SOA (backward masking). It is argued that these results support the hypothesis according to which detection and identification are serial processes.  相似文献

The aim of the investigation was to study if dysfunctions associated to the cochlea or its regulatory system can be found, and possibly explain hearing problems in subjects with normal or near-normal audiograms. The design was a prospective study of subjects recruited from the general population. The included subjects were persons with auditory problems who had normal, or near-normal, pure tone hearing thresholds, who could be included in one of three subgroups: teachers, Education; people working with music, Music; and people with moderate or negligible noise exposure, Other. A fourth group included people with poorer pure tone hearing thresholds and a history of severe occupational noise, Industry. Ntotal = 193. The following hearing tests were used:− pure tone audiometry with Békésy technique,− transient evoked otoacoustic emissions and distortion product otoacoustic emissions, without and with contralateral noise;− psychoacoustical modulation transfer function,− forward masking,− speech recognition in noise,− tinnitus matching.A questionnaire about occupations, noise exposure, stress/anxiety, muscular problems, medication, and heredity, was addressed to the participants. Forward masking results were significantly worse for Education and Industry than for the other groups, possibly associated to the inner hair cell area. Forward masking results were significantly correlated to louder matched tinnitus. For many subjects speech recognition in noise, left ear, did not increase in a normal way when the listening level was increased. Subjects hypersensitive to loud sound had significantly better speech recognition in noise at the lower test level than subjects not hypersensitive. Self-reported stress/anxiety was similar for all groups. In conclusion, hearing dysfunctions were found in subjects with tinnitus and other auditory problems, combined with normal or near-normal pure tone thresholds. The teachers, mostly regarded as a group exposed to noise below risk levels, had dysfunctions almost identical to those of the more exposed Industry group.  相似文献

Detection thresholds and difference limens were measured for 16 subjects ranging from 19 to 91 years of age. The stimuli were 250-Hz bursts of vibration applied through a 3.0-cm2 contactor to the thenar eminence of the right hand. Detection thresholds were higher in older than in younger subjects, as were the absolute values of difference limens. When the difference limen was expressed in relative terms as the proportion by which two stimuli had to differ in amplitude to be discriminated (δA/A), discriminative capacities were unaffected by aging except for stimuli slightly above the detection threshold, in which case the difference limens of older subjects were significantly higher than those of younger subjects. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that elevations in the detection thresholds of older subjects are the results of reduced afferent input to central brain centers that, with regard to their capacity to detect the presence of threshold-level stimuli and to discriminate differences among suprathreshold stimuli, are relatively unaffected by aging.  相似文献

The effects of glaucoma on binocular visual sensitivity for the detection of various stimulus attributes are investigated at the fovea and in four paracentral retinal regions. The study employed a number of visual stimuli designed to isolate the processing of various stimulus attributes. We measured absolute contrast detection thresholds and functional contrast sensitivity by using Landolt ring stimuli. This psychophysical Landolt C-based contrast test of detection and gap discrimination allowed us to test parafoveally at 6 ° from fixation and foveally by employing interleaved testing locations. First-order motion perception was examined by using moving stimuli embedded in static luminance contrast noise. Red/green (RG) and yellow/blue (YB) colour thresholds were measured with the Colour Assessment and Diagnosis (CAD) test, which utilises random dynamic luminance contrast noise (± 45 %) to ensure that only colour and not luminance signals are available for target detection. Subjects were normal controls (n?=?65) and glaucoma patients with binocular visual field defects (n?=?15) classified based on their Humphrey Field Analyzer mean deviation (MD) scores. The impairment of visual function varied depending on the stimulus attribute and location tested. Progression of loss was noted for all tests as the degree of glaucoma increased. For subjects with mild glaucoma (MD ?0.01 dB to ?6.00 dB) significantly more data points fell outside the normal age-representative range for RG colour thresholds than for any other visual test, followed by motion thresholds. This was particularly the case for the parafoveal data compared with the foveal data. Thus, a multifaceted measure of binocular visual performance, incorporating RG colour and motion test at multiple locations, might provide a better index for comparison with quality of life measures in glaucoma.  相似文献

The effect of focal visual attention on backward pattern masking was investigated using an orientation discrimination task. The results show that attention reduces primarily the effect of interruption masking, the later component of pattern masking, which occurs when the delay between the target and mask onset is about 50-150 ms. The strongest spatial cueing effect, i.e. the strongest reduction of the orientation discrimination threshold due to focal attention, was observed at intermediate (approximately 100 ms) target-to-mask stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA). There was a weak effect of cueing at shorter SOAs, and no or a very weak attentional effect was present at longer target-to-mask SOAs, where the pattern masking effect is absent. The dynamics of attentional modulation of backward pattern masking correlates closely with the dynamics of the attentional modulation of neuronal responses in the early visual cortex.  相似文献

Reduced neural processing of a tone is observed when it is presented after a sound whose spectral range closely frames the frequency of the tone. This observation might be explained by the mechanism of lateral inhibition (LI) due to inhibitory interneurons in the auditory system. So far, several characteristics of bottom up influences on LI have been identified, while the influence of top-down processes such as directed attention on LI has not been investigated. Hence, the study at hand aims at investigating the modulatory effects of focused attention on LI in the human auditory cortex. In the magnetoencephalograph, we present two types of masking sounds (white noise vs. withe noise passing through a notch filter centered at a specific frequency), followed by a test tone with a frequency corresponding to the center-frequency of the notch filter. Simultaneously, subjects were presented with visual input on a screen. To modulate the focus of attention, subjects were instructed to concentrate either on the auditory input or the visual stimuli. More specific, on one half of the trials, subjects were instructed to detect small deviations in loudness in the masking sounds while on the other half of the trials subjects were asked to detect target stimuli on the screen. The results revealed a reduction in neural activation due to LI, which was larger during auditory compared to visual focused attention. Attentional modulations of LI were observed in two post-N1m time intervals. These findings underline the robustness of reduced neural activation due to LI in the auditory cortex and point towards the important role of attention on the modulation of this mechanism in more evaluative processing stages.  相似文献

While early and higher visual areas along the ventral visual pathway in the inferotemporal cortex are critical for the recognition of individual objects, the neural representation of human perception of complex global visual scenes remains under debate. Stroke patients with a selective deficit in the perception of a complex global Gestalt with intact recognition of individual objects – a deficit termed simultanagnosia – greatly helped to study this question. Interestingly, simultanagnosia typically results from bilateral lesions of the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ). The present study aimed to verify the relevance of this area for human global Gestalt perception. We applied continuous theta-burst TMS either unilaterally (left or right) or bilateral simultaneously over TPJ. Healthy subjects were presented with hierarchically organized visual stimuli that allowed parametrical degrading of the object at the global level. Identification of the global Gestalt was significantly modulated only for the bilateral TPJ stimulation condition. Our results strengthen the view that global Gestalt perception in the human brain involves TPJ and is co-dependent on both hemispheres.  相似文献

The subjects were parents, siblings, and children of schizophrenic patients. Auditory evoked potentials (EPs) (P300) were recorded in the standard oddball paradigm with a probability of the target stimuli presentation of 0.2 and sound (tone) intensity of 60 dB. A comparison of these data with the results of the examination of reference groups (normal subjects free of a family history of mental pathology) showed significantly longer latent periods of N1, N2, and P3 in EPs to target stimuli in siblings and children of schizophrenic patients, as well as significantly decreased amplitudes of N1 and P2 in EPs to nontarget (standard) stimuli and longer latent periods of N2 in EPs to target stimuli in the parents of schizophrenic patients.  相似文献

We compared the results of recognition of fragmented contour images in the presence of noise and without noise. Both the contour images and the visual noise were synthesized with Gabor elements. The spacing between fragments in contour images and between noise elements, as well as the sizes of images, varied irrespective of one another. The percentage of recognition did not depend on the size of stimuli, but it differed for various objects in the presence and absence of noise. The percentage of recognition was higher for images with lots of turns in the absence of noise and, on the contrary, for images with lengthy contours with a lightly varying curvature in the presence of noise. The thresholds of recognition in noise depended, in general, on the ratio of the spacing between the elements in noise to the spacing between contour fragments.  相似文献
