The effects of 21 days voluntary leg (plaster) immobilization on the mechanical properties of the triceps surae have been studied in 11 young female subjects, mean age 19.4 years. The results show that during the period of immobilization the mean time to peak tension (TPT) and half relaxation time (1/2RT) and tension (Pt) of the maximal twitch increased significantly (p less than 0.001) but the effects were short lived. Maximal tension and contraction times of the twitch recovered within 2-14 days following the removal of the plaster cast. The electrically evoked tetanic tensions at 10 Hz and 20 Hz did not change significantly (P greater than 0.1) during immobilization, but the 50 Hz tetanic tension (Po50) and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) were reduced (p less than 0.05). The fall in Po50 and MVC was associated with 10% decrease in the estimated muscle (plus bone) cross-sectional area. The relative (%) change in Po50 and MVC following immobilization was related to the initial physiological status (as indicated by the response of the triceps surae to a standard fatigue test prior to immobilization) of the muscle. The rate of rise and recovery fall of the tetanus were slightly but significantly (p less than 0.01) reduced on day 7 of immobilization, but thereafter remained constant. The isokinetic properties of the triceps surae as reflected in the measured torque/velocity relation of the muscle in 4 subjects did not change significantly if account was taken of the slight degree of atrophy present following immobilization.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Muscle function in children   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Electrically evoked mechanical and contractile properties of the triceps surae have been measured in 52 children aged 11 and 14 years, and results compared with previously reported data for adults (Davies and White 1982). The results show that the time to peak tension (TPT), half relaxation time (1/2RT) and supramaximal tension (Pt) of the twitch were not significantly (P greater than 0.1) different in girls and boys and independent of age. The 14-year-old girls and boys were stronger in terms of their supramaximal 10, 20, and 50 Hz tetanic tensions and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) than their younger counterparts, and both groups of children were significantly (P less than 0.001) weaker than the young adults. However, if standardisation was made for an anthropometric estimate of calf muscle (plus bone) cross-sectional area (CSA), the differences in strength disappeared. Electrically stimulated and voluntary maximal force per unit CSA measured at the knee were 17.1 and 20.5 N X cm2 respectively and independent of sex and age. The loss of force during a 2-min stimulated fatigue test was the same in the children as the adults. The average fatigue indices ranged from 0.52 to 0.72 in the children, compared with 0.68 in the adults. It is concluded that absolute differences in muscle strength in children are a function of muscle mass. The force generating capacity expressed in N X cm2, fatiguability, contraction and relaxation times of the triceps surae would appear to remain unchanged through adolescence and early adulthood.  相似文献

The study was conducted first, to determine the possibility of a dichotomy between circadian rhythm of maximal torque production of the knee extensors of the dominant and non-dominant legs, and second, to determine whether the possible dichotomy could be linked to a change in the downward drive of the central nervous system and/or to phenomena prevailing at the muscular level. The dominant leg was defined as the one with which subjects spontaneously kick a football. Tests were performed at 06:00, 10:00, 14:00, 18:00, and 22:00 h. To distinguish the neural and muscular mechanisms that influence muscle strength, the electromyographic and mechanical muscle responses associated with electrically evoked and/or voluntary contractions of the human quadriceps and semi-tendinosus muscles for each leg were recorded and compared. The main finding was an absence of interaction between time-of-day and dominance effects on the torque associated with maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of both quadriceps. A significant time-of-day effect on MVC torque of the knee extensors was observed for the dominant and non-dominant legs when the data were collapsed, with highest values occurring at 18:00 h (p < 0.01). From cosinor analysis, a circadian rhythm was documented (p < 0.001) with the peak (acrophase) estimated at 18:18 +/- 00:12 h and amplitude (one-half the peak-to-trough variation) of 3.3 +/- 1.1%. Independent of the leg tested, peripheral mechanisms demonstrated a significant time-of-day effect (p < 0.05) on the peak-torque of the single and doublet stimulations, with maximal levels attained at 18:00 h. The central activation of the quadriceps muscle of each leg remained unchanged during the day. The present results confirmed previous observations that muscle torque changes in a predictable manner during the 24 h period, and that the changes are linked to modifications prevailing at the muscular, rather than the neural, level. The similar rhythmicity observed in this study between the dominant and non-dominant legs provides evidence that it is not essential to test both legs when simple motor tasks are investigated as a function of the time of day.  相似文献

Blood pressure and heart rate changes during sustained isometric exercise were studied in 11 healthy male volunteers. The responses were measured during voluntary and involuntary contractions of the biceps brachii at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), and the triceps surae at 30% and 50% MVC. Involuntary contractions were evoked by percutaneous electrical stimulation of the muscle. Measurements of the time to peak tension of maximal twitch showed the biceps brachii (67.0 +/- 7.9 ms) muscle to be rapidly contracting, and the triceps surae (118.0 +/- 10.5 ms) to be slow contracting. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures increased linearly throughout the contractions, and systolic blood pressure increased more rapidly than diastolic. There was no significant difference in response to stimulated or voluntary contractions, nor was there any significant difference between the responses to contractions of the calf or arm muscles at the same relative tension. In contrast the heart rate rose to a higher level (P less than 0.01) in the biceps brachii than the triceps surae at given % MVC, and during voluntary compared with the electrically evoked contractions in the two muscle groups. It was concluded that the arterial blood pressure response to isometric contractions, unlike heart rate, is primarily due to a reflex arising within the active muscles (cf. Hultman and Sj?holm 1982) which is associated with relative tension but independent of contraction time and muscle mass.  相似文献

Thirty women, divided among three different age groups, i.e. 30 years (range 26-35; n = 10), 50 years (range 46-55; n = 10) and 70 years (range 66-75; n = 10) volunteered as subjects for examination of the characteristics of the muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), maximal voluntary isometric force, isometric force-time and relaxation-time of their leg extensor muscles. The CSA of the quadriceps femoris muscle in the youngest age group was slightly larger (NS) than in the middle-aged group and much larger (P less than 0.01) than in the oldest age group whose CSA was markedly smaller (P less than 0.01) than the middle-aged group. Maximal force in the youngest group was slightly greater (NS) than in the middle-aged group and much greater (P less than 0.01) than in the oldest group whose values were markedly smaller (P less than 0.05) than the middle-aged group. The individual values in CSA correlated with maximal force both in the total subject sample (r = 0.82; P less than 0.001) and in the three age groups separately (r = 0.72; P less than 0.01; r = 0.86; P less than 0.01 and r = 0.67; P less than 0.05, respectively). When the force values were related to the CSA of the muscle, the mean values of 45.4 N.cm-2, SD 5.6, 47.6 N.cm-2, SD 5.0 and 46.8 N.cm-2, SD 7.0 for the three groups did not differ significantly from each other.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We previously demonstrated that muscle afferent endings are sensitized by exogenous prostaglandins during static contraction of skeletal muscle. The purpose of this study was to determine whether 30 s of static hindlimb contraction, induced by electrical stimulation of the cat sciatic nerve, increases the concentration of immunoreactive prostaglandin E2 (iPGE2) and 6-ketoprostaglandin F1 alpha (i6-keto-PGF1 alpha, the stable metabolite of prostaglandin I2) in muscle tissue. In addition, the role of ischemia in augmenting prostanoid production was examined. Gastrocnemius muscle was obtained by freeze-clamping tissue, and prostaglandins were extracted from muscle homogenates and measured by radioimmunoassay. Compared with precontraction values, high-intensity (68% of maximal tension) static contraction elevated gastrocnemius iPGE2 and i6-keto-PGF1 alpha by 45 and 53%, respectively (P less than 0.01). Likewise, when blood flow to the gastrocnemius was attenuated by arterial occlusion during and 2 min before low-intensity contraction (29% maximal tension), the intramuscular iPGE2 concentration was increased by 71% (P less than 0.01). Conversely, low-intensity contraction (30% of maximal tension) and arterial occlusion without contraction did not alter the concentration of either prostanoid. Our findings demonstrate that prostaglandins accumulate in muscle during static contraction. We believe that local muscle ischemia may provide a stimulus for this phenomenon. These prostaglandins therefore are available to sensitize afferent endings responsible for reflex adjustments during static muscle contraction.  相似文献

Exercise induced muscle damage (EIMD) impairs maximal torque production which can cause a decline in athletic performance and/or mobility. EIMD is commonly assessed by using maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), creatine kinase (CK) and muscle soreness. We propose as an additional technique, tensiomyography (TMG), recently introduced to measure mechanical and muscle contractile characteristics. The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of TMG in detecting changes in maximal torque following EIMD. Nineteen participants performed eccentric elbow flexions to achieve EIMD on the non- dominant arm and used the dominant elbow flexor as a control. TMG parameters, MVC and rate of torque development (RTD) were measured prior to EIMD and repeated for another six consecutive days. Creatine kinase, muscle soreness and limb girth were also measured during this period. Twenty four hours after inducing EIMD, MVC torque, RTD and TMG maximal displacement had significantly (p<0.01) declined by 37%, 44% and 31%, respectively. By day 6 MVC, RTD and TMG recovered to 12%, 24% and 17% of respective pre-EIMD values. In conclusion, as hypothesised TMG maximal displacement significantly followed other standard EIMD responses. This could therefore be useful in detecting muscle damage from impaired muscle function and its recovery following EIMD.  相似文献

Maximal and submaximal activation level of the right knee-extensor muscle group were studied during isometric and slow isokinetic muscular contractions in eight male subjects. The activation level was quantified by means of the twitch interpolation technique. A single electrical impulse was delivered, whatever the contraction mode, on the femoral nerve at a constant 50 degrees knee flexion (0 degrees = full extension). Concentric, eccentric (both at 20 degrees /s velocity), and isometric voluntary activation levels were then calculated. The mean activation levels during maximal eccentric and maximal concentric contractions were 88.3 and 89.7%, respectively, and were significantly lower (P < 0.05) with respect to maximal isometric contractions (95.2%). The relationship between voluntary activation levels and submaximal torques was linearly fitted (P < 0.01): comparison of slopes indicated lower activation levels during submaximal eccentric compared with isometric or concentric contractions. It is concluded that reduced neural drive is present during 20 degrees /s maximal concentric and both maximal and submaximal eccentric contractions. These results indicate a voluntary activation dependency on both tension levels and type of muscular actions in the human knee-extensor muscle group.  相似文献

Electrical and mechanical changes in immobilized human muscle   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
After forearm fracture, the human thumb was unilaterally immobilized in eight subjects for 6 wk in a standard plaster cast. Changes of contraction properties were studied in the adductor pollicis muscle. The contralateral muscle remained unrestrained and served as control. After immobilization, the maximal voluntary contraction was reduced by 55% (P less than 0.05), and the electrically evoked maximal tetanic contraction (Po) was reduced by 33% (P less than 0.05). The decrease of Po was associated with increased maximal rate of tension development (10%) and decreased maximal rate of tension relaxation (22%). The twitch times to peak and to half relaxation were increased by 16 and 14%, respectively, but the twitch tension (Pt) was not significantly changed and the Pt/Po ratio was increased by 43% after immobilization. The muscle surface action potential presented an increase of its duration (19%) and a decrease of the amplitude and the total area (15 and 26%, respectively). The comparison of the electrical and mechanical alterations recorded during voluntary contractions, and in contractions evoked by electrical stimulation of the motor nerve, suggests that immobilization not only modifies the peripheral processes associated with contraction but also changes central and/or neural command of the contraction. At peripheral sites, it is proposed that the intracellular processes of contraction play the major role in the contractile impairment recorded during immobilization.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the practice effect and what difference it makes in the pursuit rotor test for the dominant and non-dominant hands in 30 right-handed Japanese male adults aged 18 to 23 years (Age 20.8+/-1.4 yrs). The subjects performed the pursuit rotor test for 1 min in 20 trials with a 1-min interval alternately using the dominant and non-dominant hands. After continuing for 10 trials, a 5-min rest was taken. The measurement order was randomly assigned. Contact time of a steel pen and a target was measured in units of 1/10 sec. The measurements showed a constant increasing tendency at every trial until the 6th trial in both hands. Significant linear regressions were identified, but the increase-rate of the dominant hand was significantly larger. Individual differences showed a decreasing tendency at every trial in the dominant hand, but in the non-dominant hand it increased until the 4th trial then decreased. The relationships between measurements of the 1st and 10th trials in both hands and both hands in the 1st or 10th trial were not high. The performance of the pursuit rotor test improves at every trial in both hands, but the improvement rate decreases after the 7th trial. The improvement rate of the dominant hand is high. The change in individual differences differs in both hands and the relationship between the measurements is not high. It can be judged that the practice effect of the pursuit rotor test differs in the dominant and non-dominant hands.  相似文献

We investigated the capacity for torque development and muscle activation at the onset of fast voluntary isometric knee extensions at 30, 60, and 90 degrees knee angle. Experiments were performed in subjects (n = 7) who had high levels (>90%) of activation at the plateau of maximal voluntary contractions. During maximal electrical nerve stimulation (8 pulses at 300 Hz), the maximal rate of torque development (MRTD) and torque time integral over the first 40 ms (TTI40) changed in proportion with torque at the different knee angles (highest values at 60 degrees ). At each knee angle, voluntary MRTD and stimulated MRTD were similar (P < 0.05), but time to voluntary MRTD was significantly longer. Voluntary TTI40 was independent (P > 0.05) of knee angle and on average (all subjects and angles) only 40% of stimulated TTI40. However, among subjects, the averaged (across knee angles) values ranged from 10.3 +/- 3.1 to 83.3 +/- 3.2% and were positively related (r2 = 0.75, P < 0.05) to the knee-extensor surface EMG at the start of torque development. It was concluded that, although all subjects had high levels of voluntary activation at the plateau of maximal voluntary contraction, among subjects and independent of knee angle, the capacity for fast muscle activation varied substantially. Moreover, in all subjects, torque developed considerably faster during maximal electrical stimulation than during maximal voluntary effort. At different knee angles, stimulated MRTD and TTI40 changed in proportion with stimulated torque, but voluntary MRTD and TTI40 changed less than maximal voluntary torque.  相似文献

The effects were investigated in ten women of intensive heavy resistance strength training lasting for 3 weeks on electromyographic (EMG) activity, muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and voluntary force production characteristics of leg extensor muscles. Blood samples for the determinations of serum hormones were taken from five of the subjects. Significant increases occurred in the higher force portions of the isometric force-time curve with an increase of 9.7 (SD 8.4)% (P less than 0.01) in maximal peak force. An increase of 15.8 (SD 20.9)% (P less than 0.05) took place also in the maximal neural activation (integrated EMG) of the trained muscles, while an enlargement of 4.6 (SD 7.4)% (P less than 0.05) occurred in the CSA of the quadriceps femoris muscle. Maximal force per muscle CSA increased significantly (P less than 0.05). No statistically significant changes were observed during the training in the mean concentrations of serum testosterone, free testosterone, cortisol and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). The individual concentrations of serum testosterone:SHBG ratio correlated with the individual changes obtained during the training in the muscle CSA (r = 0.99; P less than 0.01). The present findings in women indicated that the increases in maximal strength during short-term but intensive strength training were primarily due to the increased voluntary activation of the trained muscles, while muscle hypertrophy remained limited in magnitude. Large interindividual differences in women in serum testosterone concentrations could indicate corresponding differences in muscle hypertrophy and strength development even during a short-term but intensive strength training period.  相似文献

An influence of 120-days antiorthostatic (-6 degrees) hypokinesia (ANOH) on the functional properties of human m. triceps surae (TS) was investigated. After ANOH the maximal force and the maximal voluntary contraction of TS decreased on the average by 45.5% and 33.7%, respectively, and the maximal twitch response force--by 36.7% (P < 0.05-0.01). The value of force deficit increased on the average by 60.2% (P < 0.001), while a relative increase of the TS force contraction decreased in response to pair irritation (P < 0.05-0.01) as well as the velocity properties of TS after ANOH (P < 0.05-0.001). The rate of absolute (c.u.) tension development fell significantly in response to electrical nerve irritation and during voluntary contraction, while the force-velocity muscle properties according to relative (%) parameters remained unchanged. The fatiguability index of TS constituted the average 0.61 +/- 0.02 after ANOH as against 0.80 +/- 0.03 prior to it (P < 0.05). It is postulated the alterations of contractile properties of TS are due both to atrophic processes, muscle length change, condition of sarcoplasmic reticulum and to changes in the state of the central nervous system.  相似文献

Potential differences were assessed between the dominant (D) and non-dominant (ND) forearms of sedentary subjects during anaerobic exercise. Subjects performed voluntary concentric contractions of D and ND forearm muscle during a series of three high-intensity (60% of the maximal voluntary contraction force (MVC)) exercise bouts. The time-dependent changes in intracellular pH (pH(i)), Pi, and PCr concentrations, and their relation to muscular work were examined using 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) techniques, and revealed that D forearm metabolic kinetics in sedentary individuals are improved during repetitive high-intensity exercise compared to their respective ND forearm muscle. We postulate that the more regular and preferential utilization of the D limb leads to a "trained-like" condition.  相似文献

Indices of electrically stimulated and maximal voluntary isometric muscle torgue and the phosphate content of myosin phosphorylatable light chains (P light chains) were studied during recovery following a 60-s maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) in 21 human subjects. Analysis of muscle biopsy samples revealed that immediately after the 60-s MVC there were significant decreases in ATP (-15%) and phosphocreatine (-82%), and lactate concentration increased by 17-fold. All indices of muscle torque production were reduced by the 60-s MVC, but the twitch torque and torque at 10 Hz were relatively less reduced compared with the torque at 20 and 50 Hz or a 1-s MVC. Between 3 and 6 min of recovery, twitch torque and torque at 10 Hz stimulation were significantly potentiated, reaching peak values of 125 and 134%, respectively, compared with rest. Phosphate content of the fast and two slow P light chains was significantly increased over rest levels immediately after and 4 min after the 60-s MVC. These results suggest that myosin P light-chain phosphorylation could provide a mechanism to increase human muscle torque under conditions of submaximal contractile element activation following fatigue.  相似文献

Mechanical and electrical properties were studied for the first dorsal interosseous muscle of the dominant (d-FDI) and non-dominant hand (nd-FDI). Observations were made before, during and after a fatigue test, fatigue being evoked by percutaneous electrical stimulation of the ulnar nerve. The test consisted of 30 Hz bursts of ten supramaximal 0.1 ms pulses, repeated once a second for 5 min. The measurements included the amplitude of the first and fifth compound muscle action potentials (M-waves) within bursts, the peak burst force and the amplitude and time course of single twitches. At the end of the fatigue test, burst force had decreased to about the same extent in the FDI of both hands. The final decline in first M-wave amplitude was, however, significantly more pronounced for the nd-FDI than for the d-FDI. There were no longer any significant discrepancies between the two muscles after a subsequent recovery-period of 15 min. Comparisons among nd-FDI of various individuals demonstrated the presence of significant inter-individual differences in fatigue-related force-drop without any associated differences in M-wave decline. Intra-individual variability was similar for fatigue-related force-drop and M-wave decline.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to measure serum creatine kinase (CK) activity and serum myoglobin (MG) concentrations in women after two unilateral isometric knee extension exercises. Forty maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) were held for 10 s, with either a 5 s (10:5) or 20 s 10:20 exercise (349.4 +/- 66.1 mU . ml-1) and 6 h and MG values were measured pre, 0, 3, 6, and 18 h post exercise. For CK, the highest post exercise values were observed at 6 h following the 10:20 exercise (349.4 +/- 66.1 mU . ml-1) and 6 h following the 10:5 exercise (194.1 +/- 18.6 mU . ml-1). For MG, the highest values were found 3 h after the 10:20 exercise (148.9 +/- 61.7 ng . ml-1) and 6 h after the 10:5 exercise (67.3 +/- 10.9 ng . ml-1). Serum CK and MG levels were significantly greater (p less than 0.01) after the 10:20 exercise bout. The data demonstrate that CK and MG values for women increase significantly after isometric exercise. Since greater tension levels were maintained during the 10:20 exercise it is hypothesized that increased serum CK and MG values after isometric exercise may be related to the tension generated by the contracting muscle.  相似文献

The capacity for twitch potentiation in the gastrocnemius muscle was determined following maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) in 11 elderly (means +/- SD; 66.9 +/- 5.3 years) and 12 young (25.7 +/- 3.8 years) men. Potentiation was observed by applying selective stimulation to the muscle belly, 2 s after a 5 s MVC. With this procedure, both groups showed significant (P less than 0.05) increases in twitch tension in the gastrocnemius (ratios of potentiated twitch to baseline were means = 1.68 +/- 0.40 for young vs means = 1.40 +/- 0.20 for the elderly, P less than 0.001). Time to peak tension of the twitch decreased from means = 101.5 +/- 17.9 ms to means = 88.0 +/- 15.8 ms in the young men following potentiation; the respective values for the older men were 136.7 +/- 17.9 ms and 133.1 +/- 28.6 ms. These changes resulted in a greater rate of tension development in the potentiated state. The elderly gastrocnemius thus showed qualitatively similar changes in the isometric twitch following potentiation, but reduced and prolonged responses in comparison to young adults. Slowed muscle contraction and reduced capacity for potentiation may be physiological correlates of the reported morphological changes in aged skeletal muscle.  相似文献

The speed-torque relationship of the right knee extensor muscle group was investigated in eight untrained subjects (28 +/- 2 yr old). Torque was measured at a specific knee angle during isokinetic concentric or eccentric actions at nine angular velocities (0.17-3.66 rad/s) and during isometric actions. Activation was by "maximal" voluntary effort or by transcutaneous tetanic electrical stimulation that induced an isometric torque equal to 60% (STIM 1) or 45% (STIM 2) of the voluntary isometric value. Torque increased (P less than 0.05) to 1.4 times isometric as the speed of eccentric actions increased to 1.57 rad/s for STIM 1 and STIM 2. Thereafter, increases in eccentric speed did not further increase torque. Torque did not increase (P greater than 0.05) above isometric for voluntary eccentric actions. As the speed of concentric actions increased from 0.00 to 3.66 rad/s, torque decreased (P less than 0.05) more (P less than 0.05) for both STIM 1 and STIM 2 (two-thirds) than for voluntary activation (one-half). As a result of these responses, torque changed three times as much (P less than 0.05) across speeds of concentric and eccentric actions with artificial (3.4-fold) than voluntary (1.1-fold) activation. The results indicate that with artificial activation the normalized speed-torque relationship of the knee extensors in situ is remarkably similar to that of isolated muscle. The relationship for voluntary activation, in contrast, suggests that the ability of the central nervous system to activate the knee extensors during maximal efforts depends on the speed and type of muscle action performed.  相似文献

Pulmonary function after exercise was evaluated in 22 asthmatic subjects before and after a 36-session training sequence of aerobic exercise. Training did not change pulmonary function values, except for a small increase in maximal voluntary ventilation (P less than 0.02), which was attributed to respiratory muscle training. After aerobic training, both external work at a given heart rate and peak O2 consumption increased by 30 and 15%, respectively. At the same minute ventilation (VE), immediate postexercise forced expiratory airflow was higher after training (P less than 0.02), and reduction in forced expiratory airflow during the first 9 min postexercise was less after training (P less than 0.01). The posttraining airflow response to the pretraining work load was, as expected, less than the pretraining response (P less than 0.02). Although the difference in maximal-to-minimal airflow at the same VE was similar before and after training, the airflow increase accounted for 50% of the response after training compared with 16% of the pretraining response. Furthermore the strong negative correlation (P less than 0.01) between maximal and minimal airflow both pre- and posttraining indicates that exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) severity is, in part, determined by the degree of exercise-induced bronchodilation. We conclude that aerobic training significantly increases exercise-induced bronchodilation and diminishes EIB.  相似文献
