Gastric evacuation experiments were performed on horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus. A nearly full matrix experimental design with respect to the variables predator weight (<10–400 g) meal size (up to 7·8% body weight) and temperature (10–20°) was covered with 0-group smelt Osmerus eperlanus as prey. A general evacuation model without meal size as a variable was fitted to the data on wet weights as well as on dry weights by means of non-linear regression technique. Two methods of data transformation, relative data and square root transformation, were applied to improve variance homogeneity. The most reliable model fit was achieved on dry weight data applying the square root transformation technique: where St=stomach content (g wet weight) at time t after ingestion, S0=the initial meal size, W =predator (g wet weight), and T =temperature. The estimated coefficient of the exponential temperature function, δ=00·032, corresponds to a Q 10 value of 1·4 which is outstandingly low in comparison with results on other species. However additional experiments to determine maximum daily food rations indicated that appetite in contrast to gastric evacuation is strongly temperature dependent.  相似文献

Prey orientation in piscivorous brown trout   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Piscivorous brown trout Salmo trutta change their feeding behaviour depending on prey species, prey size and number of prey eaten. In trout which had eaten fish recently, most had one fish in their stomach, but up to 16 prey fish were found. Individuals of the small-sized minnow Phoxinus phoxinus were swallowed chiefly tail first, whereas individuals of the larger Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were taken both head and tail first. The largest charr were swallowed head first. In stomachs containing more than one fish prey, prey orientation was likely to be mixed. For all three types of prey orientation (i.e. tail first, head first and mixed), significant and positive correlations existed between prey length and predator length. The maximum prey size eaten tail first or in mixed orientation was about 70–85% of the size of prey eaten head first, indicating morphological advantages in eating the prey head first.  相似文献

Limanda limanda (35–225 g) fed during daytime when trained to use demand feeders under natural photoperiods. Under continuous illumination different feeding rhythms developed which were detected by periodogram analysis. Interfeeding periods (P hours) varied with body weight (W grams) and temperature (T° C) over the range 6.5–15° C as: In P=4.4 – 0.167 (In W) – 0.05 T. Daily food intake (D grams increased with both temperature and size (In D = 0.099 T + 0.579 In W – 3.49). Relative daily intake (R as % body weight, b.w) increased with temperature but decreased with size (In R = 0.099T–0.41 In W + 1.05). These changes in daily intake are primarily caused by changes in feeding frequency; the amount eaten at a meal is relatively constant save at low temperatures (6.5° C) when appetite is suppressed. Dilution of the food with kaolin (from 4.8 to 2.2 kcal/g) did not cause a compensatory increase in meal size or frequency. Gastric emptying time (GET hours) measured by X-radiography changed with body weight, temperature and relative meal size (M % b.w.) as In GET = 0.68 In M + 0.39 In W – 0.035T + 1.46. With the exception of the lowest temperature (6.5° C) interfeeding periods closely followed GET (P = 1.09 GET – 2.6) supporting the proposal that stomach fullness is a major factor controlling appetite in the dab.  相似文献

Effects of temperature and meal size on gastric evacuation rates of juvenile coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch , consuming sockeye salmon, O. nerka , fry were examined and used in the estimation of daily meal, daily ration and number of fry consumed by coho in Chignik Lake, Alaska. Evacuation of fry by coho was best described by a negative exponential model (average R2 = 0.93). A square root model also provided a good fit (average R2 = 0·93), but the y-intercepts deviated more from the expected value than did the y-intercepts of the exponential model. The effect of temperature ( T , 5–13° C) and meal size (MS, 0·166–0·367 g) on the exponential evacuation rate (re, h-1) could be described as
In the lake, coho fed continuously during the 24-h period in early June 1986 and 1987. Estimates of daily meal and ration of coho calculated by the Eggers method and the geometric mean of prey weight ranged from 0·224 to 0·435 g (2.1–4.4% body wt) depending on location and year. The Elliott & Persson method provided similar estimates of food consumption, whereas estimates based on the Pennington method and square root evacuation of prey differed from the exponential models. Sockeye fry represented 93% of the total prey weight. The average number of sockeye fry consumed per coho per 24 h, based on the arithmetic mean of prey weight, was 3·0–3·9 fry.  相似文献

Lack of control of food intake, excess size, and frequency of meals are critical to the development of obesity. The stomach signals satiation postprandially and may play an important role in control of calorie intake. Sodium alginate (based on brown seaweed Laminaria digitata) is currently marketed as a weight loss supplement, but its effects on gastric motor functions and satiation are unknown. We evaluated effects of 10 days treatment with alginate or placebo on gastric functions, satiation, appetite, and gut hormones associated with satiety in overweight or obese adults. We conducted a randomized, 1:1, placebo‐controlled, allocation‐concealed study in 48 overweight or obese participants with excluded psychiatric comorbidity and binge eating disorder. All underwent measurements of gastric emptying (GE), fasting, and postprandial gastric volumes (GVs), postprandial satiation, calorie intake at a free choice meal and selected gut hormones after 1 week of alginate (three capsules vs. matching placebo per day, ingested 30 min before the main meal). Six capsules were ingested with water 30 min before the GE, GV, and satiation tests on days 8–10. There were no treatment group effects on GE or volumes, gut hormones (ghrelin, cholecystokinin (CCK), glucagon‐like peptide‐1 (GLP‐1), peptide YY (PYY)), satiation, total and macronutrient calorie intake at a free choice meal. There was no difference detected in results between obese and overweight patients. Alginate treatment for a period of 10 days showed no effect on gastric motor functions, satiation, appetite, or gut hormones. These results question the use of short‐term alginate treatment for weight loss.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The dry weight of food remaining in the stomachs of piscivorous trout decreased exponentially with time. Gastric evacuation rates increased exponentially with increasing temperature but were unaffected by predator size, meal size or type of fish prey.
2. Mathematical models were developed to estimate both the rate and time for the gastric evacuation of different meal sizes (expressed as dry weight), and were applicable to piscivorous trout of different sizes (length range 10–32 cm) feeding on trout fry or sticklebacks at different temperatures (range 5–18°C).
3. The wet weight of food in the stomachs also decreased exponentially with time, but evacuation rates both increased with temperature and decreased with increasing meal size; the latter relationship occurred because relative rates of water loss from a meal also decreased with increasing meal size. Use of wet or dry weights can therefore lead to different conclusions about the effect of meal size on evacuation rates.
4. When piscivorous trout were fed three consecutive meals of varying size, the models predicted the total dry weight of food left in the stomach, but not the weight remaining for each individual meal. Interactions between meals led to an increase in evacuation rates for meals consumed early in the series and a decrease in evacuation rates for later meals.
5. Evacuation rates for piscivorous trout were compared with those for trout feeding on invertebrates in an earlier study, and were close to those for caddis larvae as prey, higher than those for mealworms and lower than those for a variety of invertebrate prey. Although a great deal is now known about the daily food intake and growth rates of trout feeding on invertebrates, there is little comparable information for piscivorous trout.  相似文献

High-resolution microvideograph observations supported the hypothesis that first filling of the gas bladder of larval walleye Stizostedion vitreum is accomplished by the fish penetrating the air-water interface to gulp air, then transmitting a swallowed air bubble through the gut and the pneumatic duct to the gas bladder. The snout of the larva penetrated the water surface with extension of most of the mouth into the air for only 1.5 s. An air bubble ( c. 100 μm) in the foregut was broken up into progressively smaller bubbles (10–15 μm), presumably by the combined effect of surfactant derived from the gall bladder and mechanical (peristaltic) action of the gut. These smaller bubbles seemed to be aligned in the pneumatic duct before being forced to the gas bladder by pressures generated from peristalsis.  相似文献

Gastric lavage was used to investigate the effects of temperature, prey type and prey size on gastric evacuation in small cod Gadus morhua and whiting Merlangius merlangus . The fish were fed to satiation and subsequently the stomach contents were sampled to determine the rate at which food was evacuated. Satiation meal size was positively related to temperature and differed between prey types. The gastric evacuation rate (GER) also tended to increase with temperature and varied with prey type. GER at temperatures of 11.3–12.7° C averaged 1.5–1.7 times higher than at 6–9.5° C. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the evacuation of lugworm Arenicola marina , sandeel Ammodytes spp., and herring Clupea harengus , but the GER of brown shrimp Crangon vulgaris was much slower (P<0.05). No significant changes in GER were observed when fish were fed on three different size groups of either herring or brown shrimp. In whiting, there was no significant difference in the GER of individual herring or brown shrimp when they were fed as single species meals or incorporated in meals containing a mixture of prey species.  相似文献

Synopsis Gastric evacuation of multiple meals of recently emerged sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, consumed by juvenile coho salmon, O. kisutch, were compared with that expected from a single meal evacuation rate model developed for the estimation of food consumption by coho in the field. Significant interaction occurred between meals consumed two hours apart (p<0.001). Evacuation of the first of two meals (29.9% of initial weight remaining) was significantly faster (p<0.05) than that of a single meal (36.1% of initial weight remaining) after four hours, whereas evacuation of the second meal (72.2% of initial weight remaining) was significantly slower (p<0.001) than that of single meals (50.6% of initial weight remaining) after two hours. The total weight of the multiple meal remaining after four (0.191 g), six (0.138 g) and eight (0.070 g) hours averaged within 6% of that predicted by the single meal evacuation model (0.186 g, 0.115 g and 0.073 g, respectively). These data suggest that the stomach evacuation model based on single meals is adequate for estimating the evacuation of prey consumed by continuously feeding coho salmon.  相似文献

The effect of stomach fullness on food intake of whiting in the North Sea   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The probability of a North Sea whiting Merlangius merlangus stomach containing fresh food was depressed when partially digested food was already present in the stomach. The lowered probability was detected even at levels where the fish was physiologically able to ingest an average meal. The feeding probability of c . 15% of the fish caught was predicted to be severely decreased at the level of partially digested food found in the stomachs. No effect of stomach fullness on meal size was found, indicating that the saturation is affecting search activity rather than prey or meal size selection. The diurnal pattern in food intake varied between the five sampling locations, presumably as a result of differences in prey availability.  相似文献

The bat ray, Myliobatis californica, is the most common, large predatory fish in Humboldt Bay, California. To prevent bat ray predation on cultured oyster beds, much effort has focused on reducing their population. A 13 month study was conducted in Humboldt Bay to examine the rays' use of the bay, population structure, and feeding ecology. Bat rays are seasonally found in Humboldt Bay during the spring, summer, and early fall months. Adult rays were most abundant during the summer months, while numbers of juveniles increased through the summer and early fall, indicating that Humboldt Bay is an important pupping and nursery ground. Very few rays were found in the bay during the colder months of the year. This decline in abundance is attributed to cooler water temperatures (< 10° C). The stomach contents from 503 bat rays were examined. Overall, clams were the predominant prey item. The index of importance and Shannon-Weiner diversity index indicated that food habits of bat rays change with increasing size. Larger prey items and a wider variety of prey items were consumed as rays increased in size. Dietary importance of small clams and Crangon shrimp decreased with increasing ray size, while the importance of larger prey items (e.g. large clams, Cancer crabs, blue mud shrimp, echiuran worms) increased. Predation on oysters was rare. Differences between the diets of male and female rays of similar sizes were also observed.  相似文献

Gastric emptying time in Scophthalmus maximus , when fed friable artificial pellets based on fishmeal, is composed of two phases:
(a) a delay time (td) during which the meal forms a bolus and which shortens with temperature, and
(b) an emptying phase (duration tend ) which varies with meal size ( S ), body weight ( W ) and temperature (71 according to:
(where t end is in h, S is in g, W is in g and T is °C). During the emptying phase, stomach contents decrease curvilinearly according to:
(where St , & So is in g and t is in h) in which the instantaneous digestion rate, K , varies with fish weight and temperature as:
Food pellets were prepared which remained separate and did not form a bolus in the stomach; K increased if a given meal size was subdivided to increase surface area. If meal size was increased by ingestion of identical pellets, K decreased. After a satiation meal, appetite in young turbot returns in direct relation to the degree of stomach emptiness. When food is regularly available, young turbot feed steadily at a rate which maintains their stomachs at c. 85% maximum fullness. When trained to use demand feeders, the fish interact as a group to feed rhythmically, but feeding rate falls 33% to only two-thirds of the previous rate since stomach fullness, and hence digestion rate (g h−1), is maintained at a lower level. Reduction in dietary energy density below 1 kCal g−1 increases gastric emptying rate and the turbot demonstrate partial compensation by increasing food intake. On energy-rich diets, protein nitrogen and energy assimilation efficiencies remain high (97 5% and 91% respectively) irrespective of feeding rate and frequency.  相似文献

Functional relationships were derived in order to describe the effects of fish weight (262–2066 g), temperature (1–14° C), prey size and ration size (0.4–8.4% body weight) on gastric evacuation in cod fed four natural prey types. Interindividual (unexplained) differences among voluntary fed cod were relatively large. Power functions were appropriate for describing the effects of fish weight and ration size on the half-time of evacuation. Effects of meal and/or prey size appeared to counterbalance the effects of cod size. It is suggested that when cod of different sizes are fed fixed proportions of their body weight evacuation time is constant and independent of body size. There was found to be an exponential relationship between temperature and gastric evacuation time but, observations made at similar temperatures at different times of the year suggested that seasonal effects were of minor importance.  相似文献

Growth of Pacific cod was related to energy consumption (cal g−1 day−1) and was well described by linear equations. Maintenance ration was 11 and 12 cal g−1 day−1 at 4.5 and 6.5° C, respectively. Cod between 200 and 5000 g had similar growth rates when growth was expressed as a function of consumption (cal g−1 day−1). Laboratory consumption of food averaged 0.9 and 1.3% body weight per day at 4.5 and 6.5° C, respectively. At these temperatures growth was 0.34–0.38% body weight day−1.
Maximum stomach volumes equated to approximately 4.7% of body weight with shrimp as prey. At this meal size Pacific cod did not feed the next day. A multiple meal evacuation experiment was used to verify the consumption estimates. A return-to-hunger estimate of the meal size evacuated was 1.5% body weight day−1 at 6.5° C, similar to the 1.3% consumption estimate. For Pacific cod fed a single meal of 1% body weight the estimated instantaneous evacuation rate was 0.63 body weight day−1 at 6.5° C. Meal size markedly affected the evacuation rate.
Measured consumption and growth rates are similar to those of Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua .  相似文献

After a 24 h period of starvation the Coccinella septempunctata grub satiated in 85 min after eating 31.57 ± 7.12 prey (aphids). After 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 h of prey deprivation, the grub consumed 14.31 ± 5.67, 22.05 ± 5.39, 27.10 ± 6.49, 31.57 + 7.12, 33.76 + 6.52, and 36.98 ± 8.56 prey, respectively. The voluntary intake (appetite) shows a sigmoid relationship with the time since the last meal, with an upper limit of 44.30 prey irrespective of the prey deprivation period. As maximum appetite was attained after 24–36 h of deprivation, it is recommended that C. septempunctata grubs should be starved for 24 h prior to release in the biological control programme of Lipaphis erysimi.  相似文献

The factors influencing the selection of food by flounders, Platichthys flesus (L.), have been investigated by analysing collections made in the Severn Estuary for 1 year and the results of experiments. Flounders measuring between 6–0 and 35 cm fed heavily on the polychaete Nereis diversicolor in February and on the amphipod Gammarus salinus between February and April. Thereafter these species were replaced by the mysid Neomysis integer with the decapod Crangon vulgaris. Flounders shorter than 6.0 cm, fed mainly on Neomysis integer regardless of month. Numerous factors were involved in the choice of the food including (1) the maximum and minimum length of prey, (2) its spatial distribution in the water column, (3) its degree of concealment, (4) its motility and ability to escape predation, (5) conditioning of the flounders for certain foods, (6) the fish's swimming speed and (7) the turbidity and temperature of the water.
Although the average length of ingested prey remained unchanged as the fish grew in size, an increase in the maximum and minimum lengths was observed. The percentage of stomachs that contained no identifiable remains in flounders greater than 6–0 cm averaged 80–95 % during part of the winter and 60% in the summer and between January and March. These changes partly reflected the influence of low water temperature on the metabolic rate and availability of prey. The dry weight of the stomach contents in flounders longer than 6–0 cm was lowest in winter but high values were recorded in the spring. This latter feature was probably because the rate of feeding was greater than that of digestion. During the summer, under more normal feeding conditions, the weight of the stomach contents remained relatively low compared to other fish populations. Flounders shorter than 6–0 cm always contained more food in their stomachs on a unit weight basis than larger individuals, reflecting metabolic rate and hunting efficiency.  相似文献

Foregut emptying in Blennius pholis at 16–18°C is exponential ( St = So e-Rt; R=0.006 when t is in min and s in mg dry weight). In consequence, the time for the foregut to empty completely varies in proportion to ln (meal size) in a chosen size of fish or to ln (body weight) in different sized fish fed to the same relative amount (% body weight). Appetite returns rapidly in comparison with other species (4–15 h for fish of 0.5−30 g) and, because of the tidal constraints imposed on this littoral fish, voluntarily ingested meals are large (14–9% body weight depending on fish size). Studies on digestion in small, stomachless fish are not adequately made using X-radiography and must be supported by sequential gut samples after a meal.  相似文献

Long-term voluntary-feeding experiments were carried out on farmed, 2-year-old rainbow trout offered a commercial dry feed, or chopped low-fat Baltic herring. Despite large differences in dietary water, protein and lipid content, the trout adjusted their intake to consume similar amounts of dry matter. After an 18-week trial, the stomach volumes of the herring-fed trout were significantly larger (30–35%) than those fed on the dry diet. Greatest differences were observed when fish were fed one meal per day; increasing the number of daily feeding opportunities reduced these expected stomach volumes on each diet by 15–20%. The relative increase in stomach volume was shown to be due to growth of the cardiac stomach region (corpus) rather than the pyloric region, and not to muscle relaxation; the change was completed within 10 weeks. Data were collected in a separate study to investigate stomach size in fish (age 0+, 1+, 2+) of similar genetic backgrounds which had been grown using dry pelleted diets. Despite considerable variation between populations, stomach volume to body weight relationship was allometric ( S = a W b) with the exponent in the range of 0.3–0.4.  相似文献
