Sequence data from the intron and spacer of the trnL-F chloroplast region elucidate the phylogenetic relationships of the tribe Diseae (Orchidoideae: Orchidaceae). Within Diseae, 41 species of Disa, two of Brownleea, three of Satyrium, and two of Corycium were included, with five species of Habenaria sensu lato (Orchideae) and one epidendroid as outgroups. The sequences revealed substitutions and considerable length variation, due mainly to the presence of repeat motifs. Phylogenetic analysis using parsimony revealed five distinct clades. The branching order of the five weakly supported the paraphyly of Diseae, with the successive divergence of Brownleea, Corycium, Habenaria, Satyrium, and Disa. Within the monophyletic Disa, three main groupings appeared, two strongly supported clades representing sect. Racemosae and sect. Coryphaea and the third grouping containing several clades currently grouped into sections based on morphological phylogenies. Some discrepancies between the molecular phylogeny and the phylogeny based on morphological characters may require reevaluation of some of the morphological characters. The presence of different numbers of repeat motifs, both among different taxa and within taxa, indicates that these characters may be phylogenetically informative at the population level.  相似文献

Based mainly on morphological characters, the phylogenetic relationships among genera and some species groups of the neotropical family Callichthyidae were examined. A study of the osteology of a generalized callichthyid, Callichthys callichthys (Linnaeus), with detailed comparisons among representatives of the remaining genera in the family, is presented and used as a basis for the phylogenetic analysis. A single most parsimonious tree supported the monophyly of the family Callichthyidae based on 28 derived features and the division of the family in the subfamilies Corydoradinae and Callichthyinae. In the subfamily Corydoradinae, the genus Aspidoras is the sister-group of the clade formed by Corydoras plus Brochis. Five derived features support the monophyly of this clade and four support the monophyly of Brochis. No characters, however, were found to support the genus Corydoras. In the subfamily Callichthyinae, Dianema and Hopbstemum are sister-taxa. Megalechis represents the sister-group of Dianema plus Hoplosternum and Lepthoplosternum represents the sister-group to Megalechis plus Dianema plus Hopbstemum. Finally, Callichthys is considered the least derived member of the subfamily, and is hypothesized as the sister-group of the remaining species. A key to all callichthyid genera is provided.  相似文献

While stigma anatomy is well documented for a good number of species, little information is available on the acquisition and cessation of stigmatic receptivity. The aim of this work is to characterize the development of stigma receptivity, from anthesis to stigma degeneration, in the pentacarpellar pear (Pyrus communis) flower. Stigma development and stigmatic receptivity were monitored over two consecutive years, as the capacity of the stigmas to offer support for pollen germination and pollen tube growth. In an experiment where hand pollinations were delayed for specified times after anthesis, three different stigmatic developmental stages could be observed: (1) immature stigmas, which allow pollen adhesion but not hydration; (2) receptive stigmas, which allow proper pollen hydration and germination; and (3) degenerated stigmas, in which pollen hydrates and germinates properly, but pollen tube growth is impaired soon after germination. This developmental characterization showed that stigmas in different developmental stages coexist within a flower and that the acquisition and cessation of stigmatic receptivity by each carpel occur in a sequential manner. In this way, while the duration of stigmatic receptivity for each carpel is rather short, the flower has an expanded receptive period. This asynchronous period of receptivity for the different stigmas of a single flower is discussed as a strategy that could serve to maximize pollination resources under unreliable pollination conditions.  相似文献

Abstract. We sequenced the 18S rRNA gene from 11 nematomorph species from 9 genera and derived hypotheses concerning the sister group of Nematomorpha and relationships within this taxon. The molecular and morphological data are consistent with the monophyly of Nematomorpha, a sister-group relationship between Nematomorpha and Nematoda, and a sister-group relationship between the marine genus Nectonema and all of the freshwater taxa, Gordiida. Hypotheses of relationships within Gordiida support the traditional taxa Gordiidae, Chordodidae, and Chordodinae but reject Parachordodinae and Spinochordodidae. The molecular results differ from those of previous morphological studies by suggesting a reduction of the two tail lobes at the posterior end of males in Chordodinae, monophyly of the genus Paragordionus , and paraphyly of the genus Chordodes .  相似文献

The gynoecium of 122 species and 14 varieties of Cuscuta (dodders) was investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy to assess its diversity and evolution and to provide a morphological foundation for understanding the different reproductive strategies encountered in the genus. Data were optimized into a consensus tree constructed from three large-scale molecular phylogenies of the genus based on nuclear ITS and plastid trnL-F sequences. The number of styles combined with the stigma shape are the only floral/fruit characters that enable the separation of Cuscuta subgenera. In addition, gynoecium morphology is useful for delimiting species in some clades. The one-style gynoecium of subg. Monogynella is mostly likely ancestral whereas gynoecia with two styles are derived in subgenera Cuscuta and Grammica. Gynoecia with two styles encountered in the latter subgenera provide a greater morphological complexity and flexibility for various reproductive strategies. In subg. Cuscuta, both the equal styles and stigmas continue to elongate and modify their position after the flowers open, until pollination occurs. In subg. Grammica, the two unequal styles may cause a spatial separation of the sexes in the flower, herkogamy, while the two stigmas mature sequentially and have a differential timing of their receptivity for pollen. A nectary consisting of a ring of modified stomata at the base of the ovary, the equivalent of the hypogynous nectary disc present in many Convolvulaceae, was observed for the first time in all Cuscuta species. The vasculature of the styles is reduced, represented mostly by phloem; xylem is present only in subg. Monogynella. Some gynoecial characters, for example papillae diameter, stigma surface area, stigma width, and style width were moderately correlated with pollen volume, pollen polar?Cequatorial ratio and tectum perforation. Gynoecium features suggest that Cuscuta is allied with the ??bifid clade?? (Dicranostyloideae) in Convolvulaceae.  相似文献

The 10 species of Galaxias in Tasmania, G. olidus from mainland Australia and the four species of Paragalaxias were studied using principal co-ordinates analysis (PCOA) and cluster analysis of a standardized Euclidean distance matrix based upon variate means, and by canonical variate analysis (CVA) conducted as a stepwise multiple discriminant analysis. Thirty-five variables comprising 30 morphometric and five meristic characters were analysed. The meristic characters were not included in the CVA. Excellent separation of the two genera was achieved in all analyses. The multivariate analyses were repeated on each genus separately to see if relationships suggested by the overall analysis remain stable. When the resultant groupings of species are compared for the different analyses, no consistent, distinct groupings of species within each genus are apparent. Despite the absence of distinct groupings, some trends in the affinities of some species are evident. In particular, species affinities as indicated by the CVA are more consistent with established opinions of species relationships. From the results of the study it is suggested that caution be exercised in the application of multivariate statistical analyses of morphological data to ichthyological systematics and phylogeny.  相似文献

Spatial features of pollen tube growth and the composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of transmitting tissue in carpels of Kadsura longipedunculata, a member of the basal angiosperm taxon Schisandraceae, were characterized to identify features of transmitting tissue that might have been important for pollen-carpel interactions during the early history of angiosperms. In addition to growing extracellularly along epidermal cells that make up stigmatic crests of individual carpels, pollen tubes grow on abaxial carpel epidermal cells between unfused carpels along an extragynoecial compitum to subsequently enter an adjacent carpel, a feature important for enhancing seed set in apocarpous species. Histo- and immunochemical data indicated that transmitting tissue ECM is not freely flowing as previously hypothesized. Rather, the ECM is similar to that of a dry-type stigma whereby a cuticular boundary with associated esterase activity confines a matrix containing methyl-esterified homogalacturonans. The Schisandraceae joins an increasing number of basal angiosperm taxa that have a transmitting tissue ECM similar to a dry-type stigma, thereby challenging traditional views that the ancestral pollen tube pathway was similar to a wet-type stigma covered with a freely flowing exudate. Dry-type stigmas are posited to provide tighter control over pollen capture, retention, and germination than wet-type stigmas.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The morphological structure of anthetic carpels of Brasenia (Cabombaceae), a member of the phylogenetically basal ANITA grade, has not been studied before. The carpel has a long stigmatic crest on the ventral side and could give the impression of a conduplicate structure. This is in contrast to the carpel structure in other genera of the ANITA grade. Therefore, a study of carpel development and carpel structure at anthesis was carried out. METHODS: Carpels of Brasenia schreberi were studied at different developmental stages up to anthesis by means of microtome section series and SEM to analyse and reconstruct the outer and inner carpel morphology. KEY RESULTS: Carpels of Brasenia are extremely ascidiate up to anthesis. The elongate stigma originates around the mouth of the young carpel, which is slightly curved toward the centre of the flower. Subsequently, the stigmatic zone below the mouth expands by massive intercalary elongation. CONCLUSIONS: In their ascidiate shape, carpels of Brasenia are similar to carpels of Cabomba, the other genus of Cabombaceae, which, in contrast, has a short stigma restricted to the tip of the carpel. Thus, the morphological structure is independent of the extent (and one-sidedness) of the stigma. The outer shape of carpels at anthesis does not allow the inference of the inner morphological surface. If an angiosperm carpel has a one-sided stigma it can be extremely conduplicate or extremely ascidiate. Therefore, caution has to be used in the interpretation of the structure of fossil carpels.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of all 17 extant species of the clawed lobster genus Metanephrops based on mitochondrial 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase I, and nuclear histone H3 gene sequences supports the morphological groupings of two of the traditional groups of the genus (the binghami and japonicus groups) but refutes monophyly of the other two groups (the arafurensis and thomsoni groups). The results in general support a recent morphology-based cladistic analysis of this genus except that this study suggests M. neptunus to be a basal rather than a derived species as indicated in the morphological analysis. This species is genetically diverse over its geographical range. Moreover, the two color forms of M. thomsoni are genetically distinct, most likely representing different species. The molecular phylogeny and current distribution pattern of the extant species, together with the fossil record, suggest that the genus originated in the Antarctica in the Cretaceous, followed by diversification and dispersal along the continental shelf of different continents as a result of the vicariant events associated with the breakup of the Southern Temperate Gondwana since Late Cretaceous.  相似文献

The snapping shrimp genus Alpheus is among the most diverse of caridean shrimps, and analyses of taxa separated by the Isthmus of Panama have been used to estimate rates of molecular evolution. Although seven morphological groups have been informally suggested, no formal phylogenetic analysis of the genus has been previously attempted. Here we infer the phylogenetic relationships within Alpheus using sequence data from two nuclear genes, glucose-6-phosphate isomerase and elongation factor-1alpha, and from the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I. Three major clades corresponding to previously noted morphological features were identified. Discrepancies between earlier informal morphological groupings and molecular analyses largely consisted of species whose morphologies were not entirely typical of the group to which they had been assigned. The traditional placements of shrimp with highly sessile lifestyles and consequently simplified morphologies were also not supported by molecular analyses. Phylogenies for Alpheus suggest that specialized ecological requirements (e.g., symbiotic associations and estuarine habitats) and modified claw morphologies have evolved independently several times. These new analyses also support the sister species status of transisthmian pairs analyzed previously, although very similar pairs were not always resolved with the more slowly evolving nuclear loci. In addition, six new cryptic species were identified in the course of these studies plus a seventh whose status remains to be determined.  相似文献

The bootstrapping method of determining confidence in the topology of phylogenetic trees has been applied to electrophoretic protein data for two groups of amphibians: salamanders of two North American genera (Aneides and Plethodon) of the tribe Plethodontini and Holarctic hylid frogs. Some current methods of phylogenetic reconstruction for electrophoretic protein data have been evaluated by comparing the trees obtained from molecular data sets with available morphological data. Molecular data on the phylogenetic relationships of Aneides and Plethodon, data obtained from electrophoretic and immunological studies, indicate that Aneides probably was derived from western Plethodon subsequent to the separation of eastern and western Plethodon. Thus Plethodon very likely is a paraphyletic genus. The extremely low rate of morphological evolution in Plethodon compared with that in Aneides causes difficulty in indicating their evolutionary relationships taxonomically because there are no synapomorphic morphological characters that define either eastern or western Plethodon, whereas there are several for the genus Aneides. Thus molecular data alone probably indicate the evolutionary relationships of the species in these genera. Highton and Larson's (1979) arrangement of species of Plethodon into eight species groups is supported. The topologies of the unweighted pair-group method using arithmetic means (UPGMA) and distance Wagner trees were compared with independent morphological and molecular data on the relationships of the 28 plethodonine species. It was found that UPGMA trees indicate relationships that are more in agreement with other information than are those provided by distance Wagner trees. The use of the bootstrap technique indicates that the topologies of UPGMA trees are better supported statistically than are the topologies of distance Wagner trees. Moreover, different addition criteria produce a variety of distance Wagner trees with different topologies, each with several groupings that are not supported statistically. It is concluded that considerable caution should be used in interpreting the topology of distance Wagner trees. Very similar results were obtained with a second data set on 30 taxa of Holarctic hylid frogs. Trees obtained by the neighbor-joining method are more in agreement with UPGMA phenograms and other data, so this method of phylogenetic reconstruction may be useful to systematists not willing to assume constant rates of evolution.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

The Onagraceae is unique among families of comparable size in the heterogeneity of stigma form and physiology. Studies of the receptive surfaces of stigmas from representatives of all genera of the family have shown that a range of types exists from papillate to non-papillate, and from "wet", bearing a free-running secretion, to "dry", lacking such a secretion, most genera falling in the former category. Self-incompatibility is wholly restricted to wet-stigma species, and direct and circumstantial evidence indicates that it is always likely to be of the gametophytic type, as in certain Oenothera species that have been the subjects of detailed genetical and physiological research. Whilst Oenothera and most other self-incompatible species in the family appear to reject incompatible pollen mainly in the stigma surface layers, the precise site is subject to both genetical and environmentally-determined variation. Intraspecific polymorphy in sex function is known in the genus Fuchsia , most species of which have wet stigmas. Female sterility in the functionally male flowers of certain species of this genus appears simply to be due to a failure to produce adequate stigma secretion. All species of the dry-stigma genera in the family are self-compatible, but not all are inbreeding because of the existence of other mechanisms enforcing outcrossing. The stigmas of some possess certain unique features, apparently related to water conservation. Possible evolutionary trends in the family and in the breeding and pollination systems are briefly discussed in the light of what is now known of pollen-stigma relationships.  相似文献

Tristyly is a rare floral polymorphism known to occur in only five flowering plant families. One unresolved and potential additional case of tristyly concerns the genus Hugonia in the Linaceae. Here we confirm the existence of tristyly in the genus by reporting floral measurements made on Hugonia serrata Lam., an extremely rare species endemic to the Mascarene Islands of La Réunion and Mauritius in the southern Indian Ocean. We conducted an extensive search of all natural habitats on La Réunion Island where the species had been previously reported. Twenty-eight individuals were found, of which nine were in flower. Of the nine flowering individuals five had long-styled flowers with the stigmas placed above the two levels of anthers, three had intermediate length styles with the stigmas placed between the two anther levels, and one had stigmas placed below the two anther levels, i.e., three floral morphs could be identified based on the sequence of stigma and anther positions. Reciprocity and precision indices calculated for sexual organ length in each morph confirm that this variation is well within the range of values observed by previous workers on other tristylous species in other families. Our empirical data confirm the existence of tristyly in the genus Hugonia, thereby raising the number of known families in which tristyly occurs to six. Pollen size, pollen number, and anther length increased slightly with stamen length, but the low number of plants precludes statistical tests of these trends. A bibliographic survey suggests that tristyly may occur in several other species of the genus.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of the family Lemuridae was accomplished using multiple gene partitions and morphological characters. The results of the study suggest that several nodes in the lemurid phylogeny can be robustly resolved; however, the relationships of the species within the genus Eulemur are problematically nonrobust. The genus Varecia is strongly supported as the basal genus in the family. Hapalemur and Lemur catta are strongly supported as sister taxa and together are the sister group to the genus Eulemur. E. mongoz is the most basal species in the genus Eulemur. E. fulvus subspecies form a monophyletic group with three distinct lineages. E. coronatus is strongly supported as the sister taxon to E. macaco. The relationships of E. rubriventer, E. fulvus, and the E. macaco-E. coronatus pair are unresolved. Our combined molecular and morphological analysis demonstrates the lack of influence that morphology has on the simultaneous analysis tree when these two kinds of data are given equal weight. The effects of several extreme weighting schemes (removal of transitions and of third positions in protein-coding regions) and maximum-likelihood analysis were also explored. We suggest that these other forms of inference add little to resolving the problematic relationships of the species in the genus Eulemur.  相似文献

African killifishes (Cyprinodontiformes, Aplocheilidae) historically associated with the genus Aphyosemion occur in two geographically distinct regions. One assemblage from far West Africa has been previously shown to be monophyletic and not closely related to the remaining eastern species of Aphyosemion (W. J. Murphy and G. E. Collier, 1997, Mol. Biol. Evol. 14, 790-799). This is supported by further analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences from 19 species from 21 different localities, representing 19 of the putative 22 species of this western group. Phylogenetic analyses of these data corroborate the monophyly and sister-group relationship of two distinct groups of taxa: Callopanchax and Scriptaphyosemion. Many of the relationships within Scriptaphyosemion suggest that these taxa may have radiated within a short period of time relative to the rate of substitutions within these sequences. A third, and possibly paraphyletic group of species, Archiaphyosemion, is suggested to be the sister taxon to the first two groups. These three groups are elevated to generic rank and together represent the sister group to the genus Epiplatys. Biogeographic inference suggests that the ancestors of this group diversified westward through upland habitat and have only relatively recently entered the lowland habitats in which Scriptaphyosemion and Callopanchax have diversified, with the latter genus reacquiring a suite of traits collectively referred to as annualism.  相似文献

Species of Tillandsia L. are widely distributed in Brazilian ecosystems, and in the state of Bahia they can be found in the Atlantic Forest, Caatinga and Cerrado biomes. Studying the reproductive aspects of these species can support their management and conservation. In particular, stigma morphology is a conserved trait of Bromeliaceae and stigma receptivity can influence the success of pollination. The objective of this study was to characterize the morphoanatomy and classify the stigma types of Tillandsia species by means of light and scanning electron microscopy, as well as to evaluate the stigma receptivity by different methods and at three floral development stages. A total of 21 Tillandsia species found in Bahia were evaluated. The stigma receptivity was assessed with hydrogen peroxide (3%) and a solution of α-naphthyl acetate. Four stigma types were observed: conduplicate-spiral for the species of the Tillandsia subgen. Tillandsia, simple-erect for species of T. subgen. Diaphoranthema, and simple-truncate for the species of T. subgen. Phytarrhiza. The species of the T. subgen. Anoplophytum had three morphological types, conduplicate-spiral, conduplicate-patent and simple-erect. All the species had trifid stigmas, monostratified epidermis, numerous idioblasts containing raphides in the fundamental parenchyma and an individual vascular bundle for each carpel. In all the species studied by the two methods of stigma receptivity the highest enzyme activity was observed during anthesis. The morphoanatomy of the stigma and style provides important information for the taxonomy of Tillandsia and the data on stigma receptivity can support studies of the reproduction and conservation of these species.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction analysis was used to examine the evolutionary and taxonomic relationships among 11 taxa of the subfamily Salmoninae. The genera Brachymystax and Hucho were closely related, diverging by sequence divergence estimates of 3.1%. Because the mtDNA sequence divergence between blunt- and sharp-snouted forms of Brachymystax (2.24%) was similar to divergence level of Brachymystax and Hucho , then taking into account the distinct morphological, ecological and allozyme differences between them, it is possible to recognize these forms as two separate species. The subgenus Parahucho formed a very distinct group differing by 6.35–7.08% (sequence divergence estimate) from both Brachymystax and Hucho and must be considered as a valid genus. The UPGMA and neighbour-joined phenograms showed that the five genera studied are divided into two main groupings: (1) Hucho, Brachymystax and Salvelinus ; and (2) Oncorhynchus and Parahucho species. The mtDNA sequence divergence estimates between these groupings were about 8.1%. However, the subsequent bootstrap analysis of mtDNA RFLP data did not support the monophyly of the latter grouping. The concordance of morphological and mtDNA phylogenetic patterns is discussed.  相似文献

The subfamily Viverrinae is a taxon of uncertain systematic status. This study consists of cladistic analyses based on morphological characters of specimens belonging to the genera Genetta , Osbornictis , Poiana and Prionodon . Two levels of analysis are carried out, one concerning generic relationships (intergeneric analysis) and one dealing with the interrelationships of species within the genus Genetta (intrageneric analysis). In the first analysis, different outgroups were used in order to test the ingroup topology.
With regard to the intergeneric analysis, Osbornictis , Poiana and Prionodon , together with Genetta johnstoni , constitute a monophyletic group (including Nandinia ), which is the sister-group of a clade formed by the other species of genets. Thus, the genus Genetta is regarded as paraphyletic. Prionodon appears to be a derived taxon. The Poiana – Prionodon clade is well supported, especially by ultrastructural hair characters. The cladogram topology in the intrageneric analysis indicates an ecological transition from the rain forest genets to the savanna genets.
