The effect of beta-adrenergic blockade on the dynamic response characteristics of oxygen uptake (VO2) was examined in seven healthy men. Cycle ergometer exercise consisted of a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) with 15 units per sequence, each unit lasting 15 s, for a total period of 225 s. Work rate was either 25 W or 125 W. Six identical sequences were performed continuously in a single exercise test. Each subject was studied on three occasions after 48 h treatment of placebo (CON); a nonselective beta-blocker, propranolol (PROP); and a beta 1-selective blocker, metoprolol (MET). VO2 was measured breath-by-breath. The data were analyzed in the frequency domain by Fourier analysis to yield amplitude and phase shift coefficients for the relationship between the input work rate and output VO2. Time domain analysis was performed on the cross-correlational analysis of VO2 (output).work rate (input) to determine the total lag time. The amplitude of the VO2.W-1 relationship was lower (P less than 0.0022) and the phase shift was greater (P less than 0.0039) with beta-blockade compared to CON; no differences were found between PROP and MET. The total lag time was longer (P less than 0.0053) in PROP (34.3 +/- 2.2 s) and MET (34.4 +/- 1.6 s) compared to CON (29.8 +/- 1.3 s). These data indicate that beta-adrenergic blockade causes a significant slowing of kinetics of the O2 transport system as determined by both frequency and time domain analysis. In addition, the PRBS exercise test is a sensitive indicator of change in function of the O2 transport system.  相似文献

The multifrequent pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) technique is a useful tool for studying oxygen uptake (VO2) kinetics within the aerobic range. However, the validity of this multifrequent test may be limited by nonlinearities generated by the circulatory and pulmonary system. To check for such nonlinear effects, we compared the frequency responses computed from two PRBS protocols with the results of pure sinusoidal frequencies varying in amplitude and mean values (periods between 50 s and 450 s). According to our results the VO2 frequency response does not seem to depend on the type of testing--PRBS or sine--or the changes within each test, i.e. mean power and power amplitude of the sine tests and the switching frequency of the PRBS. In the range of higher frequencies small differences between the test conditions may have been obscured by the greater scatter of dynamic responses. It was concluded that the VO2 frequency response was quasi-linear for periods down to the least 100 s. However, even in this range nonlinearities can be provoked by rest-exercise transitions, by a varying contribution of lactate or by an insufficient noise reduction.  相似文献

The maximal aerobic power (VO2max) and maximal anaerobic capacity (AODmax) of 16 female rowers were compared to their peak aerobic power (VO2peak) and peak anaerobic capacity (AODpeak, respectively) during a simulated 2-km race on a rowing ergometer. Each subject completed three tests, which included a 2-min maximal effort bout to determine the AODmax, a series of four, 4-min submaximal stages with subsequent progression to VO2max and a simulated 2-km race. Aerobic power was determined using an open-circuit system, and the accumulated oxygen deficit method was used to calculate anaerobic capacities from recorded mechanical power on a rowing ergometer. The average VO2peak (3.58 l min(-1)), which usually occurred during the last minute of the race simulation, was not significantly different (P > 0.05) from the VO2max (3.55 l min(-1)). In addition, the rowers' AODmax (3.40 l) was not significantly different (P > 0.05) from their AODpeak (3.50 1). The average time taken for the rowers to complete the 2-km race simulation was 7.5 min, and the anaerobic system (AODpeak) accounted for 12% of the rowers' total energy production during the race.  相似文献

The adaptation of muscle structure, power output, and mass-specific rate of maximal O2 consumption (VO2max/Mb) with endurance training on bicycle ergometers was studied for five male and five female subjects. Biopsies of vastus lateralis muscle and VO2max determinations were made at the start and end of 6 wk of training. The power output maintained on the ergometer daily for 30 min was adjusted to achieve a heart rate exceeding 85% of the maximum for two-thirds of the training session. It is proposed that the observed preferential proliferation of subsarcolemmal vs. interfibrillar mitochondria and the increase in intracellular lipid deposits are two possible mechanisms by which muscle cells adapt to an increased use of fat as a fuel. The relative increase of VO2max/Mb (14%) with training was found to be smaller by more than twofold than the relative increase in maximal maintained power (33%) and the relative change in the volume density of total mitochondria (+40%). However, the calculated VO2 required at an efficiency of 0.25 to produce the observed mass-specific increase in maximal maintained power matched the actual increase in VO2max/Mb (8.0 and 6.5 ml O2 X min-1 X kg-1, respectively). These results indicate that despite disparate relative changes the absolute change in aerobic capacity at the local level (maintained power) can account for the increase in aerobic capacity observed at the general level (VO2max).  相似文献

From a population of 20 healthy male volunteers, half performed constant speed, incremental load maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) tests on a motor-driven treadmill, while the other half performed similar VO2max tests on a bicycle ergometer. The two groups, matched for size and age, showed no significant differences in VO2max, maximum heart rate, or in post-exercise (4 min ) peripheral venous blood concentrations of lactete or pyruvate. However, post-exercise peripheral venous blood ammonia levels were significantly higher in the group tested on the bicycle ergometer than in the treadmill group.  相似文献

To determine the effect of one-legged sprint training on muscle pH and nonbicarbonate buffering capacity (BC), 9 subjects completed 15 to 20 intervals at 90 RPM, 4 days a week for 7 weeks on a bicycle ergometer adapted for one-legged pedaling. Needle biopsies from the vastus lateralis and blood samples from an antecubital vein were taken at rest and twice during recovery (1 and 4 minutes) from a 60 s one-legged maximal power test on a cycle ergometer. pH one minute after exercise in both the trained and untrained legs following the training period was not different but both were higher than before training. BC increased from 49.9 to 57.8 mumol HCl x g-1 x pH-1 after training (p less than 0.05). Blood lactate levels after exercise were significantly higher for the trained leg when compared to the untrained leg after spring training. Peak and average power output on the 60 s power test increased significantly after training. One-legged aerobic power (VO2max) was significantly increased in the untrained and trained legs. Two-legged VO2max also improved significantly after training. These data suggest that nonbicarbonate buffering capacity and power output can be enhanced with one-legged sprint training. Also, small but significant improvements in VO2max were also observed.  相似文献

Present study was undertaken to elucidate possible distortion of phase response and amplitude response of various respiratory parameter such as VO2, VCO2 and VE to sinusoidal work load by comparing model analysis with manual analysis. Also, an attempt was made to determine whether there is any relationship between the characteristics of response of these parameters and the aerobic capacity of subjects. Six healthy male subjects were performed exercise on an electrically braked bicycle ergometer for 32 min. The work load was varied sinusoidally between 30 watts and 60% VO2max being under anaerobic threshold with periods from 1 to 16 min. These parameters were determined in breath-by-breath mode with a computer system and mass spectrometer. In model analysis, amplitude and phase responses were well described by first order exponential model, and strong correlations were observed between magnitude of phase response or time constant of amplitude response and aerobic capacity. Manual analysis revealed that respiratory responses to sinusoidal work load are not completely sinusoidal but somewhat distorted forming saw-tooth waves with steeper downslopes.  相似文献

The kinetics of O2 up-take (VO2), CO2 output (VCO2), ventilation (VE), and heart rate (HR) were studied during exercise in normoxia and hypoxia [inspired O2 fraction (FIO2) 0.14]. Eight male subjects each completed 6 on- and off-step transitions in work rate (WR) from low (25 W) to moderate (100-125 W) levels and a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) exercise test in which WR was varied between the same WRs. Breath-by-breath data were linearly interpolated to yield 1-s values. After the first PRBS cycle had been omitted as a warm-up, five cycles were ensemble-averaged before frequency domain analysis by standard Fourier methods. The step data were fit by a two-component (three for HR) exponential model to estimate kinetic parameters. In the steady state of low and moderate WRs, each value of VO2, VCO2, VE, and HR was significantly greater during hypoxic than normoxic exercise (P less than 0.05) with the exception of VCO2 (low WR). Hypoxia slowed the kinetics of VO2 and HR in on- and off-step transitions and speeded up the kinetics of VCO2 and VE in the on-transition and of VE in the off-transition. Frequency domain analysis confined to the range of 0.003-0.019 Hz for the PRBS tests indicated reductions in amplitude and greater phase shifts in the hypoxic tests for VO2 and HR at specific frequencies, whereas amplitude tended to be greater with little change in phase shift for VCO2 and VE during hypoxic tests.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Forty-eight sedentary and 39 quite active or well-trained men participated in this study. Muscle biopsy samples were taken from the vastus lateralis for the determination of fiber type composition (I, IIa, IIb), fiber type area, and assay of the following enzymes: malate dehydrogenase (MDH), 3-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase (HADH) and oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (OGDH). Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was determined with a progressive cycle ergometer test, while endurance performance or maximal aerobic capacity (MAC) was defined as the total work output during a 90-min cycle ergometer test. Correlation analysis revealed no evidence of association between fiber type composition and VO2max kg-1 or MAC kg-1 in sedentary subjects, while active men exhibited significant correlation between % type I (r = 0.52), % type IIb (r = 0.31) and VO2max kg-1. Enzyme activities were not significantly correlated with MAC kg-1 and VO2max kg-1 in sedentary men while active men exhibited significant correlation for the three enzymes (0.37 less than or equal to r less than or equal to 0.51) with VO2max kg-1. These results show that the contribution of muscle fiber type and enzyme activities to aerobic performance may be inflated from a statistical point of view by the training status heterogeneity of subjects. They also suggest that variation in these muscle characteristics does not account for the individual differences in aerobic performance of subjects who have never trained before. Therefore, the assessment of muscle characteristics is not as useful as originally thought for the detection of individuals with a high potential for endurance performance among untrained subjects.  相似文献

Seeking to develop a simple ambulatory test of maximal aerobic power (VO(2 max)), we hypothesized that the ratio of inverse foot-ground contact time (1/t(c)) to heart rate (HR) during steady-speed running would accurately predict VO(2 max). Given the direct relationship between 1/t(c) and mass-specific O(2) uptake during running, the ratio 1/t(c). HR should reflect mass-specific O(2) pulse and, in turn, aerobic power. We divided 36 volunteers into matched experimental and validation groups. VO(2 max) was determined by a treadmill test to volitional fatigue. Ambulatory monitors on the shoe and chest recorded foot-ground contact time (t(c)) and steady-state HR, respectively, at a series of submaximal running speeds. In the experimental group, aerobic fitness index (1/t(c). HR) was nearly constant across running speed and correlated with VO(2 max) (r = 0.90). The regression equation derived from data from the experimental group predicted VO(2 max) from the 1/t(c). HR values in the validation group within 8.3% and 4.7 ml O(2) x kg(-1) x min(-1) (r = 0.84) of measured values. We conclude that simultaneous measurements of foot-ground constant times and heart rates during level running at a freely chosen constant speed can provide accurate estimates of maximal aerobic power.  相似文献

The strength cycle ergometer has been proposed as a method of simultaneously increasing aerobic conditioning and muscular strength, because of its unique capacity of disengaging the pedal crank, thus allowing for concurrent single-leg cycling. The purpose of this study was to assess the aerobic and muscular strength effects of strength cycle training (SCT), comparing it to similar standard cycle training. A total of 28 recreationally-trained adult subjects (9 men, 19 women) were paired for VO2peak and randomly assigned to either SCT or Monark cycle training (MCT). Subjects trained 3 days per week following a progressive interval protocol for 9 weeks under supervised conditions. Training intervals (5 minutes' duration) consisted of 3 minutes of standard cycling at an intensity of 60-85% of maximum heart rate (HRmax), and 2 minutes of either the disengaged cycling mode (SCT) or standard cycling plus 30 W (MCT). Subjects began training for a total of 25 minutes per session, progressing to 45 minutes per session by study's end. Prior to and following training, subjects were measured for VO2peak; submaximal VO2, heart rate (HR), RPE, power output, and knee and ankle isokinetic strength. Training resulted in significant (p < or = 0.05) increases in VO2peak (14.5%) and submaximal power output (11%), and significant reductions in submaximal VO2, HR, and RPE in both groups. Significant increases in bilateral isokinetic knee extension (4-6%) and left ankle plantar flexion (10.5%) were noted following training in both groups. No group differences were detected in any variable. Although the strength cycle effectively increased aerobic function and resulted in modest selected increases in lower-extremity muscular strength, these changes were not different from those seen using a similar standard cycling protocol.  相似文献

Peak aerobic power (VO2peak) is decreased after blood donation, but the time course for full recovery is unknown. We measured VO2peak and exercise time to fatigue before and weekly for 4 weeks after 450-ml blood donation at a blood donor clinic, to determine the time course of recovery. Twelve moderately active individuals (2 women, 10 men; 24.3 ± 5.2 years) of average aerobic fitness (based on their VO2peak relative to normative values) completed VO2peak exercise tests before donation, the day after donation, and at weekly intervals for 4 weeks after donation. VO2peak was determined by an incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer. At baseline, mean absolute and relative VO2peak values were 4.06 ± 0.92 L·min(-1) and 46.6 ± 7.0 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1), respectively. VO2peak was significantly decreased on day 1 (3.85 ± 0.89 L·min(-1); 44.0 ± 6.5 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)) and during week 2 (3.91 ± 0.97 L·min(-1); 44.5 ± 7.2 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)) after blood donation (p < 0.05), and recovered at week 3 after donation. Time to fatigue and peak heart rate were not significantly affected by blood donation. We conclude that blood donation causes a significant decrease in VO2peak for between 2 and 3 weeks. The practical application of this study is that aerobic power in people of average fitness will be decreased, up to 3 weeks after donating blood. Despite this, there is no effect of blood donation on performance as measured by time to fatigue during an incremental test on a cycle ergometer.  相似文献

Pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) exercise tests involve repeated switching between two work rates (WR) according to a computer-generated pattern. This paper presents an approach to analysis of O2 uptake (VO2) in the time domain. First, the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the input WR was recognized to be a triangular-shaped pulse that can be taken to be equivalent to a ramp increase followed by a ramp decrease in WR. Then the cross-correlation function of the input (WR) and the output (VO2) was treated as if it were the response to a triangular-shaped pulse. The cross-correlation function was analyzed by fitting a linear summation of the ramp form of a two-component exponential function to this triangular pulse. VO2 responses of eight subjects were obtained from two different PRBS tests, as well as step changes in WR. The first PRBS test consisted of 15 units, each 30 s in duration. Its ACF had a base width of 60 s. The ramp increase-ramp decrease model fit the data throughout the range of response. The second PRBS test had 63 units, each 5 s in duration; thus its ACF base width was 10 s. Again, the ramp model fit adequately. The data from the second PRBS test could be fit by the impulse form of the two-component exponential equation, although the fit in the first 30 s tended to be poorer. The time constants of VO2 dynamics estimated from step and PRBS tests were not significantly different. PRBS tests can be analyzed in the time domain, and the indicators of system dynamics reflect physiological properties similar to those investigated during step changes in WR.  相似文献

In this study we investigated the effect of pedal cadence on the cycling economy, accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD), maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and blood lactate transition thresholds of ten high-performance junior endurance cyclists [mean (SD): 17.4 (0.4) years; 183.8 (3.5) cm, 71.56 (3.75) kg]. Cycling economy was measured on three ergometers with the specific cadence requirements of: 90-100 rpm for the road dual chain ring (RDCR90-100 rpm) ergometer, 120-130 rpm for the track dual chain ring (TDCR120-130 rpm) ergometer, and 90-130 rpm for the track single chain ring (TSCR90-130 rpm) ergometer. AODs were then estimated using the regression of oxygen consumption (VO2) on power output for each of these ergometers, in conjunction with the data from a 2-min supramaximal paced effort on the TSCR90-130 rpm ergometer. A regression of VO2 on power output for each ergometer resulted in significant differences (P<0.001) between the slopes and intercepts that produced a lower AOD for the RDCR90-100 rpm [2.79 (0.43) l] compared with those for the TDCR120-130 rpm [4.11 (0.78) l] and TSCR90-130 rpm [4.06 (0.84) l]. While there were no statistically significant VO2max differences (P = 0.153) between the three treatments [RDCR90-100 rpm: 5.31 (0.24) l x min(-1); TDCR120-130 rpm; 5.33 (0.25) 1 x min(-1); TSCR90-130 rpm: 5.44 (0.27) l x min(-1)], all pairwise comparisons of the power output at which VO2max occurred were significantly different (P<0.001). Statistically significant differences were identified between the RDCR90-100 rpm and TDCR120-130 rpm tests for power output (P = 0.003) and blood lactate (P = 0.003) at the lactate threshold (Thla-), and for power output (P = 0.005) at the individual anaerobic threshold (Thiat). Our findings emphasise that pedal cadence specificity is essential when assessing the cycling economy, AOD and blood lactate transition thresholds of high-performance junior endurance cyclists.  相似文献

Eight young men were tested for strength, anaerobic capacity and aerobic endurance in a post absorptive state and after a 3.5 day fast. Strength was tested both isokinetically (elbow flexors, 0.52 rad x s-1 and 3.14 rad x s-1) and isometrically. Anaerobic capacity was evaluated by having subjects perform 50 rapidly repeated isokinetic contractions of the elbow flexors at 3.14 rad x s-1. Aerobic endurance was measured as time to volitional fatigue during a cycle ergometer exercise at 45% VO2max. Measures of VO2, VE, heart rate, and ratings of perceived exertion were obtained prior to and during the cycle exercise. The 3.5 day fast did not influence isometric strength, anaerobic capacity or aerobic endurance. Isokinetic strength was significantly reduced (approximately 10%) at both velocities. VO2, VE and perceived exertion were not affected by fasting. Fasting significantly increased heart rate during exercise but not at rest. It was concluded that there are minimal impairments in physical performance parameters measured here as a result of a 3.5 day fast.  相似文献

A multi-stage, repetitive lifting maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) test was developed to be used as an occupational research tool which would parallel standard ergometric VO2max testing procedures. The repetitive lifting VO2max test was administered to 18 men using an automatic repetitive lifting device. An intraclass reliability coefficient of 0.91 was obtained with data from repeated tests on seven subjects. Repetitive lifting VO2max test responses were compared to those for treadmill, cycle ergometer and arm crank ergometer. The mean +/- SD repetitive lifting VO2max of 3.20 +/- 0.42 l.min-1 was significantly (p less than 0.01) less than treadmill VO2max (delta = 0.92 l.min-1) and cycle ergometer VO2max (delta = 0.43 l.min-1) and significantly greater than arm crank ergometer VO2max (delta = 0.63 l.min-1). The correlation between repetitive lifting oxygen uptake and power output was r = 0.65. VO2max correlated highly among exercise modes, but maximum power output did not. The efficiency of repetitive lifting exercise was significantly greater than that for arm cranking and less than that for leg cycling. The repetitive lifting VO2max test has an important advantage over treadmill or cycle ergometer tests in the determination of relative repetitive lifting intensities. The individual curves of VO2 vs. power output established during the multi-stage lifting VO2max test can be used to accurately select work loads required to elicit given percentages of maximal oxygen uptake.  相似文献

The dynamics of ventilation (VE), oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide output (VCO2), and heart rate (fc) were studied in 12 healthy young men during upright and supine exercise. Responses to maximal and to two different types of submaximal exercise tests were contrasted. During incremental exercise to exhaustion, the maximal work rate, VO2max, VEmax, fc,max, and ventilatory threshold were all significantly reduced in supine compared to upright exercise (P less than 0.01-0.001). Following step increases or decreases in work rate between 25 W and 105 W, both VO2 and VCO2 responded more slowly in supine than upright exercise. Dynamics were also studied in two different pseudorandom binary-sequence (PRBS) exercise tests, with the work rate varying between 25 W and 105 W with either 5-s or 30-s durations of each PRBS unit. In both of these tests, there were no differences caused by body position in the amplitude or phase shifts obtained from Fourier analysis for any observed variable. These data show that the body position alters the dynamic response to the more traditional step increase in work rate, but not during PRBS exercise. It is speculated that the elevation of cardiac output observed with supine exercise in combination with the continuously varying work-rate pattern of the PRBS exercise allowed adequate, perhaps near steady-state, perfusion of the working muscles in these tests, whereas at the onset of a step increase in work rate, greater demands were placed on the mechanisms of blood flow redistribution.  相似文献

In two experiments maximal aerobic power (VO2max) calculated from maximal mechanical power (Wmax) was evaluated in 39 children aged 9-11 years. A maximal multi-stage cycle ergometer exercise test was used with an increase in work load every 3 min. In the first experiment oxygen consumption was measured in 18 children during each of the prescribed work loads and a correction factor was calculated to estimate VO2max using the equation VO2max = 12.Wmax + 5.weight. An appropriate increase in work rate based on height was determined for boys (0.16 W.cm-1) and girls (0.15 W.cm-1) respectively. In the second experiment 21 children performed a maximal cycle ergometer exercise test twice. In addition to the procedure in the first experiment a similar exercise test was performed, but without measurement of oxygen uptake. Calculated VO2max correlated significantly (p less than 0.01) with those values measured in both boys (r = 0.90) and girls (r = 0.95) respectively, and the standard error of estimation for VO2max (calculated) on VO2max (measured) was less than 3.2%. Two expressions of relative work load (%VO2max and %Wmax) were established and found to be closely correlated. The relative work load in %VO2max could be predicted from the relative work load in %Wmax with an average standard error of 3.8%. The data demonstrate that calculated VO2max based on a maximal multi-stage exercise test provides an accurate and valid estimate of VO2max.  相似文献

This study examined the anaerobic and aerobic contributions to muscle metabolism during high intensity short duration exercise. Six males [mean (SD): age 25.0 (6.0) years, height 179.0 (8.2) cm, mass 70.01 (7.42) kg, VO2max 4.63 (0.53) l.min-1, body fat 12.7 (2.3)%] performed three counterbalanced treatments of 30, 60 and 90 s of maximal cycling on an air-braked ergometer. All treatments were also performed on days when biopsies were not taken from the vastus lateralis muscle and cannulae not inserted into a forearm vein to ascertain whether these procedures adversely affected performance. The mean results can be summarised as follows: (Table: see text). The muscle lactate and O2 deficit data suggested that 60 and 90 s were more appropriate durations than 30 s for assessing the anaerobic capacity on an air-braked cycle ergometer. The mean power outputs also indicated that the invasive procedures did not adversely affect performance [corrected].  相似文献

The effects of strength training on maximal aerobic power (VO2max) and some of its determinants were studied in 12 healthy older men (60-72 yr). They underwent 12 wk of strength conditioning of extensors and flexors of each knee with eight repetitions per set, three sets per session, and three sessions per week at 80% of the one repetition maximum (1 RM). Left knee extensors showed a 107% increase in 1 RM, a 10% increase in isokinetic strength at 60 degrees/s, and a 23% increase in total work performed during 25 contractions on an isokinetic dynamometer. Strength measurements of the untrained left elbow extensors showed no change. Leg cycle ergometer VO2max per unit fat-free mass increased by an average 1.9 ml (P = 0.034) whereas arm cycle VO2max was unchanged. Pulmonary function, hemoglobin concentration, erythrocyte volume, plasma volume, and total blood volume did not change. Biopsies of the vastus lateralis showed a 28% increase in mean fiber area, no change in fiber type distribution, a 15% increase in capillaries per fiber, and a 38% increase in citrate synthase activity. The data suggest that the small increase in leg cycle VO2max in older men may be due to adaptations in oxidative capacity and increased mass of the strength-trained muscles.  相似文献
