Most triatomine bugs (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) are nest-living insects that require vertebrate blood or invertebrate haemolymph to complete their life cycle. Vertebrates accumulate excretory products in or near their nesting sites and we hypothesize that triatomines use emanations from such host wastes when searching for resources. Here we recount how triatomine bugs increase upwind locomotion on a servosphere in response to volatile amine constituents of vertebrate excretions. Fresh chicken faeces is strongly attractive to Rhodnius prolixus nymphs. Ammonia induces attraction and an increase in both speed and total path length by R. prolixus on the servosphere. Whereas ethylamine and dimethylamine attract R. prolixus, Triatoma infestans and Panstrongylus geniculatus, other amine constituents of vertebrate excretions such as isobutylamine and hexylamine induce R. prolixus nymphs to walk faster and for a longer period. These amines are derived from generally occurring metabolites of vertebrates and from gut flora metabolism. We conclude that amines and other products associated with nesting hosts serve as signals for foraging triatomines. 相似文献

Knowledge of chemical ecology of haematophagous triatomine bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae) could be of practical value because this polyphyletic subfamily includes species of medical importance, such as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), the aetiological agent of Chagas disease. For particular species of Dipetalogaster, Panstrongylus, Rhodnius and Triatoma, therefore, we review information on exocrine glands and products, interpreting their apparent roles as semiochemicals in the aggregation, alarm, defence, host-finding and sexual behaviour of these Triatominae. 相似文献

Development of symbionts in triatomine bugs and the effects of infections with trypanosomatids 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
In the intestinal tract of fifth instars of the hematophagous reduviid bugs Rhodnius prolixus and Triatoma infestans blood ingestion induced an initial decrease of the concentration of the respective symbiotic bacteria Rhodococcus rhodnii and Nocardia sp. and then within 10 days a 15- or 18-fold increase of the total population/bug to about 0.8 x 10(9) colony-forming units in R. prolixus and 1.8 x 10(9) colony-forming units in T. infestans. About 95-99% of the total populations of both symbionts developed in the anterior midgut regions, i.e., cardia and stomach. The passage from the blood-storing stomach to the digesting small intestine caused a considerable breakdown of symbiont populations, and only about 0.01% of the total population was present in the rectum. These were excreted mainly within 4 h after a blood meal. After infection with three species of trypanosomatids, R. rhodnii, the symbiont of R. prolixus, was affected by Trypanosoma rangeli, but not by Blastocrithidia triatomae or Trypanosoma cruzi. On the other hand, in T. infestans the concentration of Nocardia sp. was reduced after infection with B. triatomae, but not by T. rangeli nor T. cruzi. In long-term B. triatomae-infected T. infestans, this reduction and a reduced diuretic activity after feeding synergistically lowered the symbiont concentration in the singly deposited feces/urine drops drastically compared to uninfected controls. These data strongly support the theory of the mechanisms of pathogenicity of T. rangeli and B. triatomae for R. prolixus and T. infestans, respectively, that the primal point of attack is the host-specific symbiont, R. rhodnii and Nocardia sp., respectively. 相似文献

The alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (alpha-GPDH) activity in flight muscles of Panstrongylus megistus and Triatoma sordida, vectors of Chagas disease in Brazil, was studied. Both species showed higher enzymatic activities in fliers than in non-fliers insects. T. sordida exhibited a higher proportion of flier insects than P. megistus. A possible role of alpha-GPDH on triatomines flight is discussed. 相似文献

Triatomine bug species such as Microtriatoma trinidadensis, Eratyrus mucronatus, Belminus herreri, Panstrongylus lignarius, and Triatoma tibiamaculata are exquisitely adapted to specialist niches. This suggests a long evolutionary history, as well as the recent dramatic spread a few eclectic, domiciliated triatomine species. Virtually all species of the genus Rhodnius are primarily associated with palms. The genus Panstrongylus is predominantly associated with burrows and tree cavities and the genus Triatoma with terrestrial rocky habitats or rodent burrows. Two major sub-divisions have been defined within the species Trypanosoma cruzi, as T. cruzi 1 (Z1) and T. cruzi 2 (Z2). The affinities of a third group (Z3) are uncertain. Host and habitat associations lead us to propose that T. cruzi 1 (Z1) has evolved in an arboreal, palm tree habitat with the triatomine tribe Rhodniini, in association with the opossum Didelphis. Similarly we propose that T. cruzi (Z2) and Z3 evolved in a terrestrial habitat in burrows and in rocky locations with the triatomine tribe Triatomini, in association with edentates, and/or possibly ground dwelling marsupials. Both sub-divisions of T. cruzi may have been contemporary in South America up to 65 million years ago. Alternatively, T. cruzi 2 (Z2) may have evolved more recently from T. cruzi 1 (Z1) by host transfers into rodents, edentates, and primates. We have constructed a molecular phylogeny of haematophagous vectors, including triatomine bugs, which suggests that faecal transmission of trypanosomes may be the ancestral route. A molecular clock phylogeny suggests that Rhodnius and Triatoma diverged before the arrival, about 40 million years ago, of bats and rodents into South America. 相似文献

Triatomines are haematophagous insects in all post-embryonic life stages. They are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. Their vectorial ability is influenced by their feeding performance, which varies greatly amongst species. Recent work showed that inhibition of the coagulation process in the anterior midgut (crop) environment considerably influences the blood meal size. In this work, we performed a comparative study of the level of anticoagulant activity in the saliva and crop contents of three triatomine species - Triatoma infestans, Triatoma brasiliensis and Rhodnius prolixus - and correlated this with their feeding performance on live hosts. Moreover, the feeding parameters on a large diameter vessel influenced by the crop anticoagulants were evaluated in detail. The anticoagulant activity was significantly higher in the crop contents than in salivary glands, varying from 1.6-fold higher for R. prolixus to 70-fold higher for T. brasiliensis. Amongst the species, T. brasiliensis had the lowest crop anticoagulant activity, the lowest concentration of thrombin inhibitor, and took the longest to feed. Triatoma brasiliensis nymphs that had their intestinal anticoagulant (brasiliensin) knocked down by RNA interference had the lowest capacity to maintain cibarial pump frequency at higher levels throughout the feeding process and consequently a lower ingestion rate (mg/min), even when fed under favourable conditions (large diameter vessel). However, the feeding difficulty for brasiliensin knockdown T. brasiliensis nymphs was reversed by treating the host mice with heparin (a potent systemic anticoagulant) before blood feeding. The results indicate that crop anticoagulant activity influences modulation of the blood-pumping frequency to the intestine and significantly affects the feeding efficiency of triatomine spp. on live hosts. 相似文献

It is important to clarify the distribution of infected triatomine bugs in the endemic area of Chagas' disease for proper control. In the present study, we tried to detect T. cruzi kinetoplast DNA by PCR from dried triatomine feces collected from the house wall of an endemic area to assess the distribution of infected bugs more easily. The primers (P35/P36) were chosen to amplify the conserved region within the minirepeats of T. cruzi kinetoplast minicircle DNA. The kinetoplast DNA of T. cruzi could be actually detected in the dried feces collected from the wall of a brick-built house in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Next, we examined the stability of T. cruzi kinetoplast DNA in the feces exposed to artificial environments. T. cruzi DNA was also detected by PCR in the feces left for 26 weeks at 25 degrees C and in those left for 4 weeks at 40 degrees C. The present study indicates that examination of dried feces on the wall can be an effective tool for surveillance of the natural infection of triatomine bugs that live in houses. 相似文献

Hemipteran chromosomes are holocentric and show regular, special behavior at meiosis. While the autosomes pair at pachytene, have synaptonemal complexes (SCs) and recombination nodules (RNs) and segregate at anaphase I, the sex chromosomes do not form an SC or RNs, divide equationally at anaphase I, and their chromatids segregate at anaphase II. Here we show that this behavior is shared by the X and Y chromosomes of Triatoma infestans and the X(1)X(2)Y chromosomes of Triatoma pallidipennis. As Rec8p is a widely occurring component of meiotic cohesin, involved in meiotic homolog segregation, we used an antibody against Rec8p of Caenorhabditis elegans for immunolocalization in these triatomines. We show that while Rec8p is colocalized with SCs in the autosomes, no Rec8p can be found by immunolabeling in the sex chromosomes at any stage of meiosis. Furthermore, Rec8p labeling is lost from autosomal bivalents prior to metaphase I. In both triatomine species the sex chromosomes conjoin with each other during prophase I, and lack any SC, but they form "fuzzy cores", which are observed with silver staining and with light and electron microscopy during pachytene. Thin, serial sectioning and electron microscopy of spermatocytes at metaphases I and II reveals differential behavior of the sex chromosomes. At metaphase I the sex chromosomes form separate entities, each surrounded by a membranous sheath. On the other hand, at metaphase II the sex chromatids are closely tied and surrounded by a shared membranous sheath. The peculiar features of meiosis in these hemipterans suggest that they depart from the standard meiotic mechanisms proposed for other organisms. 相似文献

Oriented responses of both R. prolixus and T. infestans adults were recorded on a servosphere to mouse-odour, one of its components (CO2), and to rabbit urine-odour. The volatiles were delivered in an air-stream under controlled conditions which excluded other sensory modalities. In stimulus-free air the triatomines walked preferentially downwind in straight bouts interrupted by stops or periods at relatively low speeds, all of variable duration. In odour-laden air, bugs maintained their typical walking habit but switched from negative to positive anemotaxis. The characteristic response to odour onset was to stop, sample the air with the antennae, turn upwind in situ, and then walk off in the direction of the source for at least a few seconds, i.e., odour mediated anemotaxis. Mouse-odour caused T. infestans to increase its speed to 5.3 cms-1. Both species continued with the upwind response for some time after odour delivery ceased, but the crosswind component of the tracks was more prominent during this period — an effort, we presume, by the bugs to re-contact an odour plume. This investigation provides unequivocal evidence for host finding in triatomines by olfactory cues alone. 相似文献

The pathological effects of Trypanosoma rangeli on Rhodnius prolixus and R. robustus, and the relation of mortality to infection, were studied under laboratory conditions. Frequent observations revealed that when the first instar nymphs of R. prolixus and R. robustus were infected with T. rangeli, survival of the bugs during the stages of development to the adult stage decreased. This decrease was statistically significant when compared with uninfected control-bugs, indicating that T. rangeli is pathogenic for both species of triatomine. In R. prolixus the most affected nymphal stages were the first, second and fifth instars, where a higher mortality was also observed. In R. robustus a progressive increase of the mortality from the first to fifth instars, was observed. The pathogenicity of T. rangeli as measured by overall mortality was the same in R. prolixus and R. robustus. The possible pathogenic mechanism of T. rangeli in triatomine-bugs and its epidemiological implications, are discussed. 相似文献

The collection of blood samples for serological studies is often stressful for the focus animal. Recently, the use of bloodsucking bugs, such as Dipetalogaster maximus or Triatoma infestans (Reduviidae; Triatominae; Heteroptera), has been suggested as a new and less invasive method for blood collection. To evaluate this technique, we collected paired blood samples from 20 domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) during a study of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV). For each rabbit, blood samples were collected by the conventional method (needle and syringe from the vena auricularis) and through feeding by D. maximus. Samples were tested for RHDV antibodies using standard test kits at three different dilutions. Antibody titers were identical for 56 paired samples and differed in only four cases. The simple matching indices were 1 for the 1:10 dilution and 0.9 for the 1:100 and 1:1000 dilutions. The major advantages of the new technique are 1) the possibility to obtain blood from animals where veins are inaccessible and 2) the fact that anesthesia of focus animals may not be necessary. 相似文献

Trypanosoma cruzi and Trypanosoma rangeli-like trypanosomes have been found in a variety of neotropical bat species. In this study, bats (Artibeus lituratus, Carollia perspicillata, Desmodus rotundus, Glossophaga soricina, Molossus molossus, Phyllostomus hastatus) were maintained under controlled conditions, and experiments were conducted to determine how they might become infected naturally with trypanosomes. All bats were first screened for existing infections by hemoculture and the examination of blood smears, and only apparently uninfected animals were then used in the experiments. Proof was obtained that the triatomine bug Rhodnius prolixus would readily feed upon some of the bats, and two species became infected after being bitten by bugs infected with T. rangeli. Some bats also became infected by ingesting R. prolixus carrying T. cruzi, or following subcutaneous or intragastic inoculation with fecal suspensions of R. prolixus containing T. cruzi. P. hastatus became infected after ingesting mice carrying T. cruzi. All of the bats studied inhabit roosts that may be occupied by triatomine bugs and, with the exception of D. rotundus, all also feed to at least some extent upon insects. These findings provide further evidence of how bats may play significant roles in the epidemiology of T. cruzi and T. rangeli in the New World tropics. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Observations were made in Mexico on the subsocial behaviour and biology of some membracids. An attempt was made to quantify the amount of violence to which the female of Bilimekia broomfieldi could be subjected without causing it to abandon its eggs or larvae.
2. The brooding behaviour of females of different species can be very dissimilar, even within the same genus, e.g. Polyglypta.
3. The females of many species exhibit a striking reversal of behaviour when they begin to tend eggs. When not tending eggs or larvae they take evasive action, often flying away, when a large predator approaches closely. However, once they are brooding the female stays with the eggs when a large predator approaches and may behave in a manner that in a higher animal might be described as a purposeful counter-attack.
4. Brooding females of Bilimekia broomfieldi were killed and other brooding females were used as surrogate mothers for the orphaned eggs and larvae. The surrogate mothers appeared to behave towards the strange eggs and larvae as if they had been their own.
5. Observations were made on the way in which some membracids defend themselves against attacks by ants.
6. During development, membracids of most species undergo morphological colour changes. The significance of the change from black aposematic in first instar larvae to bright yellow and black aposematic in later instars, a change which appears not to be reversed in any species, is discussed.
7. The aposematic pattern of the larvae of some species of both Membracis and Acanophora partly consists of a white encrustation secreted in patches or stripes over the epicuticle. The encrustation reflects ultraviolet light, so perhaps the aposematic pattern confers some protection against other insects as well as vertebrates.
8. A new species of membracid, Bilimeki broomfieldi , is described. 相似文献

Exceptionally large amounts of lipid are stored in flight muscles of Rhodnius prolixus and Triatoma infestans (197 and 90 μmoles glyceride glycerol per g fresh weight respectively). The bulk of this lipid is in the form of triacylglycerol.A significant decrease in the muscle lipid occurs during the first hour of flight. Over the same period there is an increase in haemolymph lipid (particularly of diacylglycerol) which is taken to indicate the use of lipid from the fat body. The carbohydrate content of muscle and haemolymph is low, so it is likely that the supply of energy for flight is provided almost exclusively by the oxidation of fat. Oleate and palmitate are the major fatty acid components of lipid from both Triatoma and Rhodnius and are probably also the major fatty acids used for oxidation.Maturation of flight ability is temporally associated with the development of flight muscle size and increase in glyceride content. 相似文献

Sound production in the cichlid Tilapia mossambica Peters 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
W. J. R. Lanzing 《Journal of fish biology》1974,6(4):341-347
Aquarium-bred adult and juvenile Tilapia mossambica Peters can produce sounds ofvarying frequency, duration and intensity. However, minor environmental disturbancesmay cause the fish to fall silent for long periods. The sounds produced by excited feedingfishes are different from those produced by territorial males and from those emitted by fryswimming in school formation. The frequency of the sounds recorded varied from about1–16 kHz; no data are available on frequencies lower than 1 kHz. The sound producingmechanism consists of a single ventral and two dorsal pharyngeals located in the buccalcavity and provided with numerous small teeth. These teeth have a specially modifieddistal surface area which is already evident in younger fish. Young Tilapia , including3-week old fry, are able to emit sounds as soon as a sufficient number of teeth havedeveloped in the pharyngeal region. 相似文献
