Reproductive behavior influences gene flow within and amongspecies; thus, sexual selection may be a major contributor tothe maintenance of species, and possibly their formation. HereI experimentally manipulate the courtship interactions of thefield crickets Gryllus rubens and G. texensis to examine thepotential of close-range courtship interactions to limit interspecificgene flow. Responses of males to females and of females to malecourtship song and males per se were examined for four pairedsympatric and allopatric populations. Male G. rubens were morelikely to court conspecific females, but male G. texensis courtedfemales of both species equally. If paired with conspecificmales, female G. rubens and G. texensis both preferred conspecificcourtship song. In none of these comparisons were the responsesof males or females from allopatry different from those in sympatry. There was an asymmetry of courtship response across both sexand species: male G. rubens were more discriminating than maleG. texensis, whereas female G. texensis were more discriminatingthan female G. rubens. Despite significant preferences for conspecifics, the net effect of courtship interactions would appear to limitinterspecific gene flow only weakly. These results are consistentwith courtship behavior evolving under the influence of sexualselection and only indirectly promoting species integrity. 相似文献

We tested the differential maternal allocation hypothesis ina population of house sparrows. We experimentally altered theattractiveness of males by treating them with implants filledwith crystalline testosterone (T) or left empty (C). We subsequentlymonitored maternal investment as a function of male hormonaltreatment and the size of the black patch of feathers on thethroat (i.e., the badge), a sexually selected trait. The differentialallocation hypothesis predicts that females should adjust theirinvestment with respect to the benefits they receive by matingwith an attractive male. Given that both circulating levelsof T and badge size are condition-dependent traits, we expectedthat females mated with T males and/or with large-badged malesshould invest more into current reproduction. Contrary to thisprediction, we found no evidence that suggested differentialmaternal allocation in this population of house sparrows. Femaleinvestment in yolk T, yolk mass, clutch size, chick brooding, and feeding was not affected by male hormonal treatment or bymale badge size. As expected, T males invested less into chickbrooding and feeding. More surprisingly, females did not compensatethe reduced paternal contribution to chick feeding. As a consequence, the breeding success of T pairs was largely reduced comparedwith that of C pairs. The absence of differential allocationin a system in which it could have an adaptive role raises thequestion about the possible constraints or overriding factorsoperating on patterns of reproductive investment in this species. 相似文献

Mate competition and mate choice are not mutually exclusivebehaviors. Both behaviors may drive sexual selection in oneor both sexes of a population. One of several factors affectingwhich behavior is exhibited by which sex is the operationalsex ratio (OSR) in the study population. The present study combinesbehavioral observations in the field with controlled experimentsin aquaria to investigate social interactions and mate choicein both male and female long-snouted seahorses Hippocampus guttulatusin the context of the population OSR. Compared with the morereadily studied pipefishes, data on OSR and mate choice in seahorsesare scarce in the published literature. Our field data providenovel evidence of social promiscuity, size-assortative mating, and an OSR that varies from being unbiased early and midseasonto male biased at the end of the breeding season. Our mate choiceexperiments revealed intersexual differences in mate preferencewith males significantly preferring larger females to familiarones. Taken together, our field and experimental results suggestthat mate choice rather than intrasexual competition could drivesexual selection in seahorses.

Reproductive parasites such as Wolbachia are extremely widespread amongst the arthropods and can have a large influence over the reproduction and fitness of their hosts. Undetected infections could thus confound the results of a wide range of studies that focus on aspects of host behavior, reproduction, fitness, and degrees of reproductive isolation. This potential problem has already been underlined by work investigating the incidence of Wolbachia infections in stocks of the model system Drosophila melanogaster. Here we survey a range of lab stocks of further commonly used model arthropods, focusing especially on the flour beetles Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum, the cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus and related species (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae and Bruchidae). These species are widespread stored product pests so knowledge of infections with symbionts further has potential use in informing biocontrol measures. Beetles were assessed for infection with 3 known microbial reproductive parasites: Wolbachia, Rickettsia, Spiroplasma. Infections with some of these microbes were found in some of the lab stocks studied, although overall infections were relatively rare. The consequences of finding infections in these or other species and the type of previous studies likely to be affected most are discussed. 相似文献

Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) appear to forego the chemical courtship that is typical of other danaid butterflies, and instead employ a coercive mating system. Females have been described as using resistance behaviors in response to male coercion. Much of our understanding of sexual selection in monarchs is based on observations of mating attempts that occur on the ground, but recent studies report frequent mating attempts in the tree canopy. I compared mating activity on the ground to that in the tree canopy and found that, among heterosexual mating attempts, location did not affect the likelihood of ending in copulation. This suggests that the more easily obtained data on ground attempts may reasonably approximate mating activity in the canopy. The outcome of ground attempts was influenced by vegetation structure and the position of the male relative to the female and the ground at the start of the ground phase of the mating attempt. My observations suggest that butterfly position may be correlated with male search strategy. It remains unclear whether described resistance behaviors represent female or male control. However, the data do demonstrate that attempt outcome is influenced by both behavior and ecology: male search and capture strategies may influence copulatory success, and human-induced changes to the habitat can influence monarch mating activity at overwintering sites. 相似文献

Population differences in female resource abundance, adult sex ratio, and male mating success in Dendrobates pumilio 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
In this study I examined the relationship among abundance ofreproductive resources, population density, and adult sex ratioin the strawberry dart-poison frog, Dendrobates pumilio, andhow these variables in turn influence the mating system, malereproductive success, and sexual selection. I studied the matingbehavior in two populations of D. pumilio living in a primaryand secondary rainforest on the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica. The abundance of tadpole-rearing sites (reproductive resourcesfor females) was approximately 10-fold higher in the secondary
forest. Accordingly, the population density was higher and theadult sex ratio was strongly female biased in the secondaryforest, whereas the adult sex ratio was even in the primaryforest. The female-biased sex ratio was associated with a higherlevel of polygyny and higher male mating and reproductive successin the secondary forest. In contrast, the level of polyandrydid not differ between habitats. As expected, the opportunityfor sexual selection on male mating success was lower in thesecondary forest, the habitat with high female density. Inconclusion, my results suggest that ecological variables suchas resource availability have a great impact on the matingsystem and sexual selection through their effect on population
structure. Moreover, the results of this study give furtherevidence that the opportunity for sexual selection is influencedby the adult sex ratio and hence by the operational sex ratioin a population. 相似文献

A trade-off generated by sexual conflict: Mediterranean wrasse males refuse present mates to increase future success 总被引:1,自引:2,他引:1
A variety of mechanisms, including intrasexual competition, intersexual
conflict, and physiological constraints, can explainpatterns of reproduction
and the adaptive value of specificbehaviors. In a Mediterranean wrasse,
Symphodus ocellatus (Labridae),large, nesting males occasionally
refuse to spawn with willingfemales in the presence of small, sneaker males.
We exploredthe possible adaptive significance of this behavior. Nestingmales
refuse females despite the fact that it reduces theirimmediate mating
success. This nesting-male behavior also decreasesfemale and sneaker mating
success and occurs when sneaker malessurround the nest. Experiments that
decreased the number ofsneakers around nests showed that nesting males
respond immediatelyto mating opportunities when fewer sneakers are present,
andthus they are not simply constrained by a lack of energy orlack of sperm.
Experiments that increased the number of sneakersat the nest caused nesting
males initially to refuse spawningopportunities, followed by a subsequent
decrease in sneakerpresence and an increase in mating rate. We propose that
thisbehavior is the result of a trade-off between immediate matingsuccess
and future reproduction created by competition betweenmales and conflict
between the sexes. Males reduce their immediatemating success by reducing
spawning at the nest; sneaker malessubsequently leave, and this
decreases mate competition forthe nesting male. Unresponsiveness of nesting
males also causessexual conflict between females and nesting males over
mating. We argue that this behavior and the existence of a trade-offcan only
be understood by examining intersexual conflict andintrasexual competition
simultaneously. 相似文献

In polyandrous mating systems, male fitness depends on success in premating, post-copulatory and offspring viability episodes of selection. We tracked male success across all of these episodes simultaneously, using transgenic Drosophila melanogaster with ubiquitously expressed green fluorescent protein (i.e. GFP) in a series of competitive and noncompetitive matings. This approach permitted us to track paternity-specific viability over all life stages and to distinguish true competitive fertilization success from differential early offspring viability. Relationships between episodes of selection were generally not present when paternity was measured in eggs; however, positive correlations between sperm competitive success and offspring viability became significant when paternity was measured in adult offspring. Additionally, we found a significant male × female interaction on hatching success and a lack of repeatability of offspring viability across a focal male's matings, which may underlay the limited number of correlations found between episodes of selection. 相似文献

Climate and agricultural context shape reproductive mode variation in an aphid crop pest 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

In aphids, reproductive mode is generally assumed to be selected for by winter climate. Sexual lineages produce frost-resistant eggs, conferring an advantage in regions with cold winters, while asexual lineages predominate in regions with mild winters. However, habitat and resource heterogeneities are known to exert a strong influence on sex maintenance and might modulate the effect of climate on aphid reproductive strategies. We carried out a hierarchical sampling in northern France to investigate whether reproductive mode variation of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi is driven by winter climate conditions, by habitat and resource heterogeneities represented by a range of host plants or by both factors. We confirmed the coexistence in R. padi populations of two genetic clusters associated with distinct reproductive strategies. Asexual lineages predominated, whatever the surveyed year and location. However, we detected a between-year variation in the local contribution of both clusters, presumably associated with preceding winter severity. No evidence for host-driven niche differentiation was found in the field on six Poaceae among sexual and asexual lineages. Two dominant multilocus genotypes (∼70% of the sample), having persisted over a 10-year period, were equally abundant on different plant species and locations, indicating their large ecological tolerance. Our results fit theoretical predictions of the influence of winter climate on the balance between sexual and asexual lineages. They also highlight the importance of current agricultural practices which seem to favour a small number of asexual generalist genotypes and their migration across large areas of monotonous environments. 相似文献

The present study aimed at assessing the annual reproductive cycle of female Arabian carpetshark, Chiloscyllium arabicum from the Persian Gulf by a macroscopic and microscopic evaluation of the reproductive tract. The annual cycle of gonadal steroids [17β-estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4) and testosterone (T)] was also assessed in this shark. In total, 130 female C. arabicum were collected from the Bahrakan Creek (located northwest of the Persian Gulf) between January 2018 and March 2019. Females were oviparous with an external-type ovary and only one functional ovary. Five sexual maturity stages were recognized based on macroscopic and microscopic evaluation: Immature I (August–October), Immature II (November–January), Mature (February–March), Pregnant (April–May) and Spent (June–July). The structural changes in the oviducts, oviducal glands and uterus throughout the annual reproductive cycle were consistent with their roles in the egg movement, the egg capsule production and sperm storage. The plasma levels of the gonadal steroids were associated with morphological changes in the reproductive tract. E2 showed two detectable peaks during March (close to ovulation) and June (just before mating). P4 and T displayed a peak just before ovulation. 相似文献

Batch spawner fishes develop successive clutches of oocytes which allows them to participate in many reproductive cycles during their adult life (iteroparous) and spawn in multiple events within each breeding cycle. Here, ovarian follicular development was morpho-functionally analyzed in females of the iteroparous batch spawner fish Gymnocorymbus ternetzi. To obtain better insights into the reproductive morpho-physiology in batch spawners, the objective of this research was to analyze the dynamics of the follicular development, with its hormonal regulation between two active reproduction events. We found that over 16 days, follicles progressed asynchronously to chromatin nucleolus, Primary and Secondary growth stages of oogenesis with progressive secretion of 17β-estradiol (E2). During the end of secondary growth, the increase in 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20β-p) was measured relative to the maturation process of the ovarian follicles (e.g., nuclear migration and its rupture during the resumption of meiosis). Interestingly, an additional increase in E2 was observed after fish reproduction, probably related to the recruitment of new batch follicles for secondary growth. We also measured the high values of multiple condition factor post-reproduction measurements, reflecting more energy invested during the pre-reproductive process. We also quantified high concentrations of 17,20β-p, probably related to the recruitment of a new batch of oogonia to meiosis, presumably secreted by post-ovulatory follicles, after fish reproduction. We finally found that fish without exposure to reproductive stimulus developed a regression phase at day 24, characterized by massive follicle atresia, that allow them to recycle energy and constitutive materials of the follicles invested during oogenesis for another reproductive cycle. 相似文献

Parentage of nestling red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus)from an eastern population was determinedusing DNA fingerprintingtechniques. Of 235 nestlings surveyed, 58 had fingerprints excludingthemale, but none excluded the female tending the nest. Data onpairing status during the female's fertilizable period was availablefor 232 offspring; 55 (25%of 1988 nestlings, 23% of 1989 nestlings)of those were sired through extrapair copulations. Of these55 offspring, 33 could be assigned to nearby territory holders;16 of the remaining nestlings may have been sired by nearbymales that were not captured. During both years, 44% of territorialmales had more than one female nesting simultaneously on theirterritory. The number of extrapair fertilizations gained bymales increased significandy with harem size in 1 year. Paternity(die proportion of nesdings on the territory sired by die territoryholder) showed a positive but nonsignificant increase widi haremsize in bodi years. There was no apparent cost in paternityfor males guarding two or more fertilizable females at the sametime. The broods of females that were fertilizable at die sametime anodier female was setding on die same territory tendedto have a greater proportion of extrapair fertilizations (0.37)than did die broods of odier females within harems (0.15). Establishedfertilizable females were chased significantly more by die territoryowner and by extrapair males when a new female was setding. There were no associations between a male's paternity or successat gaining extrapair fertilizations and his age or color-bandcombination. Overall, extrapair fertilizations had litde effecton die relationship between fledgling success and harem sizeand appeared to have a minimal impact on die overall intensityof sexual selection on males. 相似文献

Sclerasterias richardi, a relatively deep sea asteroid (140–200 m) from the border of the Mediterranean continental shelf, is characterized by an asexual reproduction by fissiparity concomitant with a functional sexuality. A monthly sampling of a population from Calvi (Corsica) has allowed a study of the complete sexual cycle from 354 histologically-treated specimens. The 218 sexually defined animals (62% males, 38% females) show strict gonochorism. In males, spermatogenesis is cyclic and sexual maturity seems to be reached before that of the females. In females, the different stages of oogenesis are well marked: oogonia and parietal oocytes disappear only at maturity. Oligolecithic oocytes (120–150 μn) show a synchronous growth. The annual reproductive cycle is well defined in both sexes with one spawning period from mid-September to mid-October. After spawning, a resting period (from mid-October to mid-January) occurs during which unspawned oocytes are phagocytized by more or less isolated accessory cells. These phagocytic cells have never been found in male specimens. Each month the presence of specimens without gonads or unsexable individuals is one of the characteristics of this cycle. Their high proportion during the organization stage and after spawning can be easily explained. In March they are frequent too, owing to the infestation of gonads by Ciliates. As shown by our samples, the bottom water temperature is nearly the same during the whole year and cannot be directly involved as the dominant exogenous variable stimulating spawning. As a consequence of fissiparity which affects the main part of the population there is a great inter- and intra-individual variability. The reproductive potentiality is low: as a female emits approximatly 400–500 ova whose development produces planktotrophic larvae with a long pelagic life, it is clear that sexual reproduction is accessory in comparison with asexual reproduction by fission. 相似文献

Synchronization of ovarian events has been reported in a number of primate species, with the temporal resolution of synchrony ranging from the occurrence of seasonal breeding within the annual cycle to a close matching of ovarian events within a single ovarian cycle. However, ovarian synchrony has not been reported in a New World primate. The temporal association of ovarian events was examined in female golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) living in the same or different social groups. Ovarian cyclicity was monitored by measuring the excretion of urinary estrogen metabolites. There was a high degree of synchronization in the occurrence of urinary estrogen peaks for females in different social groups (mean peak discrepancy = 2.1 days) and in females housed in the same social group (mean peak discrepancy = 1.3 days). Contrary to previous reports on callitrichid primates, daughters housed in their natal family group exhibited cyclic patterns of urinary estrogen excretion. These findings represent the first explicit demonstration of ovarian synchrony in a New World primate, and the tight coupling of ovarian cycles in female tamarins resembles the nature of menstrual synchrony in human females. 相似文献

The traits thought to advertise genetic quality are often highly susceptible to environmental variation and prone to change with age. These factors may either undermine or reinforce the potential for advertisement traits to signal quality depending on the magnitude of age-dependent expression, environmental variation, and genotype-age and genotype-environment interaction. Measurements of the magnitude of these effects are thus a necessary step toward assessing the implications of age dependence and environmental variability for the evolution of signals of quality. We conducted a longitudinal study of male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) from 22 full-sibling families. Each fish was assigned at maturity to one of three treatments in order to manipulate his allocation of resources to reproduction: a control in which the male was kept alone, a courtship-only treatment in which he could see and court a female across a clear partition, and a mating treatment in which he interacted freely with a female. We measured each male's size, ornamental color patterns, courtship, attractiveness to females, and mating success at three ages. Size was influenced by treatment and age-treatment interactions, indicating that courtship and mating may impose costs on growth. Tail size and color patterns were influenced by age but not by treatment, suggesting fixed age-dependent trajectories in these advertisement traits. By contrast, display rate and attempted sneak copulation rate differed among treatments but not among ages, suggesting greater plasticity of these behavioral traits. As a result of the different patterns of variation in ornamentation and behavior, male attractiveness and mating success responded to male age, treatment, and the interaction between age and treatment. Neither age nor treatment obscured the presence of genetic variation, and the genetic relationship between male ornamentation and attractiveness remained the same among treatments. Our findings suggest that neither age-dependent variation nor environmentally induced variation in reproductive effort is likely to undermine the reliability of male signaling. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Laboratory experiments with yellow dung fly larvae, Scatophaga sfercoraria L. were carried out in the hope of clarifying the causal relationship underlying the extreme variation in body size in wild populations.
2. First, parents were collected in the field and newly hatched larvae exposed to different density levels under two temperature regimes (15°C and 20°C). Second, heritability experiments were done.
3. The results showed that density during the larval stage has a very significant effect on adult size. Male size is more affected than female size and the male larvae spend more time feeding than the female larvae with the result that the males are on average larger. Also, the additive genetic component is of little or no significance, supporting the notion that body size is positively related to fitness.
4. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to field data on the effects of size on both male and female reproductive success. 相似文献

Male-biased sexual dimorphism in both size and body mass isa common characteristic of many polygynous mammals and is oftenattributed to sexual selection favoring large males. The degreeof dimorphism is thought to be related to the potential forsome males to monopolize access to estrous females, which isin turn related to the distribution of receptive females inspace and time. In the present study, we investigated the relationshipbetween the temporal distribution of breeding females and thedegree of mass dimorphism among 11 populations of the commonbrushtail possum from northern Australia. Breeding patternsvaried from complete aseasonality in some populations to a seasonalconcentration of births within 2 or 3 months in others. We predictedthat in populations in which mating opportunities were distributedthroughout the year, dominant males would be able to monopolizeaccess to larger numbers of estrous females than in populationsin which matings were more seasonal, and in such populations, large body size in males would be favored. We found that dimorphismwas related to seasonality of breeding, being greatest in populationswith a more aseasonal pattern. Mean body mass of male possumsalso decreased with increasing population density. Populationdensity may influence the degree of breeding synchrony withinpopulations, particularly in locations with a more seasonalclimate. The present study is the first to demonstrate plasticityin mass dimorphism in response to local variation in the synchronyof breeding in a mammal species. 相似文献

Social preferences based on sexual attractiveness: a female strategy to reduce male sexual attention
Brask JB Croft DP Thompson K Dabelsteen T Darden SK 《Proceedings. Biological sciences / The Royal Society》2012,279(1734):1748-1753
Male sexual harassment of females is common across sexually reproducing species and can result in fitness costs to females. We hypothesized that females can reduce unwanted male attention by constructing a social niche where their female associates are more sexually attractive than themselves, thus influencing the decision-making of males to their advantage. We tested this hypothesis in the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a species with high levels of male sexual harassment. First, we confirmed that non-receptive females were harassed less when they were paired with a more sexually attractive (receptive) female than with another non-receptive female. We then found that, indeed, females exploit this as a strategy to reduce sexual harassment; non-receptive females actively preferred to associate with receptive over non-receptive females. Importantly, when given access only to chemosensory cues, non-receptive females still showed this preference, suggesting that they use information from chemical cues to assess the sexual attractiveness of potential female partners. Receptive females in contrast showed no such preferences. Our results demonstrate that females can decrease male harassment by associating with females that are more sexually attractive than themselves and that they perform active partner choices based on this relative attractiveness. We propose that this strategy is likely to represent an important pathway by which females can construct social niches that influence the decision-making of others to their advantage; in this case, to reduce the sexual harassment they experience. 相似文献
