Based on microhistological analyses of faecal material, we compared the early dry season diets of greater one-horned rhinoceros Rhinoceros unicornis, swamp deer Cervus duvauceli and hog deer Axis porcinus, which inhabit the same alluvial grassland habitat complex in lowland Nepal. Their diets were quite similar, both at the forage category level and within subcategories of graminoids and woody plants. Early successional tall grasses, especially Saccharum spontaneum, were the dominant food of all three species, underlining the key role of the threatened alluvial floodplains in large mammal conservation in South Asia. The two deer species ate significantly more graminoids (>66.5%) than did rhino (45.5%), and although they did not differ in proportions of graminoids, swamp deer ate significantly more late successional tall grasses (Narenga porphyrocoma and Themeda spp.) and short grasses (mainly Imperata cylindrica) than hog deer. The two deer consumed almost equal proportions of woody browse (ca. 10%), significantly less than that of rhino (33.0%). The prediction of the Jarman–Bell hypothesis, that large-bodied herbivores are less selective and subsist on lower quality graminoids than smaller ruminants, was not supported by the data. Based on this and previous studies in the same area we propose a conceptual model where the larger megaherbivores (rhino and elephant Elephas maximus) facilitate the smaller swamp deer and hog deer during the monsoonal growing season, while the smaller and more selective deer species outcompete the larger during the dry season when food is more limited. Owing to the all-year sprouting ability of S. spontaneum, facilitation may occur also in the dry season with low numbers of megaherbivores, thus accentuating competitive exclusion at higher deer densities.  相似文献

DNA sequences were used to assess the monophyly and inter-relationships of Miscanthus, Saccharum and related genera in the Saccharum complex. Three DNA regions were sequenced, including the trnL intron and the trnL-F intergenic spacer of the plastid genome and the ITS region of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA). Because it was more variable, the ITS region proved most suitable for phylogenetic reconstruction at this level, and the results indicate that Miscanthus s.l. and Saccharum s.l. are polyphyletic. A set of species from Saccharum section Ripidium (clade a) do not group closely with any members of Saccharum s.l.. A number of Miscanthus species from eastern or south-eastern Asia represent a monophyletic group with a basic chromosome number of 19 (clade b), but the other species from Africa and the Himalayas are clearly excluded. There is support for a monophyletic Saccharum s.s. clade including S. officinarum and S. spontaneum that is sister to Miscanthus s.s (clade c). There is no evidence to support the division of some Saccharum s.l. into the genera currently known as Erianthus and Narenga. Saccharum contortum (=Erianthus contortus), S. narenga (=Narenga porphyrocoma) and Erianthus rockii, group more closely with Miscanthus fuscus, a species from the Himalayas and also with the African Miscanthus s.l. species (=Miscanthidium, clade d). Chloroplast (cp) DNA from 32 genotypes representing eight genera and 19 species from the Andropogoneae tribe was analyzed using 15 restriction enzymes and Southern hybridization with 12 cpDNA probes that span the complete rice chloroplast genome. Six of the genera, Saccharum, Miscanthus, Erianthus, Narenga, Eccoilopus, and Sclerostachya, are part of the Saccharinae subtribe, whereas the other two, Zea and Sorghum, were used as outgroups. Narenga, Miscanthus, Erianthus, and Sclerostachya are presumed to have been involved in the evolution of Saccharum officinarum (noble or high sucrose sugarcane) via S. spontaneum and S. robustum. Southern hybridization with the rice cpDNA probes surveyed approximately 3% of the S. officinarum Black Cheribon genome and yielded 62 restriction site mutations (18 informative) that were analyzed using cladistic parsimony and maximum likelihood. These site mutations placed the 32 genotypes into nine different chloroplast groups; seven from within the Saccharinae subtribe and the two outgroups (maize and Sorghum). Phylogenetic inferrence under various assumptions showed that the maternal lineages of Narenga, Miscanthus, Sclerostachya, and Saccharum formed a monophyletic group. This group displayed little variation. On the other hand, 5 of 6 Erianthus species and Eccoilopus longisetosus formed a separate group. The Old World Erianthus/Eccoilopus chloroplast was very different from that of the rest of the Saccharum complex members and was slightly more related to that of Sorghum bicolor. Placement of these Erianthus/Eccoilopus genotypes was, therefore, in conflict with analyses based on morphology. Surprisingly, Erianthus trinii, a New World species, had the same restriction sites as did one Miscanthus sinensis. One Miscanthus sp. from New Guinea that has a very high chromosome number (2n=192) had the same restriction sites as the majority of the Saccharum genus, suggesting that introgression between these genera occurs in the wild. The Saccharum genus was separated into two clades by single site mutation: one containing S. spontaneum, and the other containing all of the remaining Saccharum species and all 8 commerical hybrids (from various regions of the world). To understand how plant communities are structured by herbivory it is essential to investigate the roles of different herbivores and the responses of a variety of plant species in different habitats. We examined the effects of mammalian herbivores on survival and growth of transplanted seedlings of two native trees (Eucalyptus albens and Callitris glaucophylla), and one native grass (Themeda australis) in white box (E. albens) woodlands in eastern Australia over 3 years. Herbivores were manipulated using four fencing treatments that successively excluded livestock, macropods, and rabbits from woodland and grassland (cleared pasture). Survival was highest in the absence of mammalian herbivores and in woodlands, and patterns differed among plant species. Survival of T. australis was low, especially in grasslands, and mortality by overgrowth was common in ungrazed treatments. All plant species were taller in fenced plots, and differences between treatments were greater in grassland. Rabbits and livestock had the greatest influence on C. glaucophylla, while T. australis and E. albens were most affected by livestock and macropods. We used field data to parameterize stage-classified matrix models to predict escape from herbivory (escape height >100 cm) for tree species. Reduced herbivory increased the proportion of individuals reaching escape height after 15 years. Rate of escape was greater in grassland, and this faster growth appeared to counteract much of the negative impact of herbivores. While T. australis was unable to escape herbivory, larger, ungrazed individuals were more likely to flower and therefore contribute to the maintenance of the population. Our results show that habitat and herbivore species strongly influence the effect of herbivory on vegetation.  相似文献

Summary Isozyme variation was used to identify biochemical markers of potential utility in sugarcane genetics and breeding. Electrophoretic polymorphism was surveyed for nine enzymes among 39 wild and noble sugarcane clones, belonging to the species most closely related to modern varieties. Up to 114 distinct bands showing presence versus absence type of variation were revealed and used for qualitative characterization of the materials. Multivariate analysis of the data isolated the Erianthus clone sampled and separated the Saccharum spontaneum clones from the S. robustum and S. officinarum clones; the latter two were not differentiated from one another. The analysis of self-progenies of a 2n=112 S. spontaneum and of a commercial variety showed examples of mono- and polyfactorial segregations. Within the progeny of the variety, co-segregation of two isozymes frequent in S. spontaneum led to them being assigned to a single chromosome initially contributed by a S. spontaneum donor. This illustrates how combined survey of ancestral species and segregation analysis in modern breeding materials should permit using the lack of interspecific cross-over to establish linkage groups in a sugarcane genome.  相似文献

An objective of the CSR sugarcane breeding programme in Australia was to assess the scope for broadening the genetic base of the commercial sugarcane germ plasm through interspecific hybridization with Saccharum spontaneum clones. The contribution of both selection history and S. spontaneum to sugar yield and its components was investigated in the germ plasm pool assembled. The analysis was conducted on a data-set of 256 clones, consisting of parents and full-sib families generated from 32 biparental crosses, tested in six environments. The minimum number of generations back to S. spontaneum ancestor in the clone's pedigree was used as a germ plasm score. The geographical origin and selection history of each parent and their use in the biparental crosses were used to develop a selection history score for parents and offspring. The variation for seven attributes, cane yield, commercial cane sugar %, sugar yield, stalk number per stool, stalk weight, fibre % and ash % juice was partitioned according to the germ plasm and selection history scores. Significant (P<0.05) clone variation and clone x environment interaction for all attributes was present. The germ plasm scores accounted for a significant (P<0.05) component of the clone variation for all of the attributes except cane yield. There was an increase in sugar yield with an increase in the minimum number of generations back to a S. spontaneum clone. The selection history groups accounted for a high proportion of the variation among parental clones for all of the attributes except cane yield. This suggested that parents were the outcome of strong selection pressure for the commercial cane attributes. However, the selection history groups for the offspring produced by random mating of parents did not account for a high proportion of the variation for the attributes. Using the mixture method of classification we partitioned the 256 clones into five groups for patterns of performance for the seven attributes across the six environments. The five groups emphasized major differences in the patterns of performance for the seven attributes across environments. The distribution of germ plasm and selection history scores in each of the five groups indicated that their patterns of performance were associated with selection history and minimum generations to S. spontaneum. Therefore, both the analysis on selection history and germ plasm scores (extrinsic classification) and the analysis on the mixture method of classification (intrinsic classification) emphasized the influence of selection history on the sugar yield of sugarcane.  相似文献

Genetic diversity among wild and cultivated barley as revealed by RFLP   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Genetic variability of cultivated and wild barley, Hordeum vulgare ssp. vulgare and spontaneum, respectively, was assessed by RFLP analysis. The material consisted of 13 European varietes, single-plant offspring lines of eight land races from Ethiopia and Nepal, and five accessions of ssp. spontaneum from Israel, Iran and Turkey. Seventeen out of twenty-one studied cDNA and gDNA probes distributed across all seven barley chromosomes revealed polymorphism when DNA was digested with one of four restriction enzymes. A tree based on genetic distances using frequencies of RFLP banding patterns was estimated and the barley lines clustered into five groups reflecting geographical origin. The geographical groups of land-race lines showed less intragroup variation than the geographical groups of spontaneum lines. The group of European varieties, representing large variation in agronomic traits, showed an intermediate level. The proportion of gene diversity residing among geographical groups (FST) varied from 0.19 to 0.94 (average 0.54) per RFLP pattern, indicating large diversification between geographical groups.  相似文献

中国十倍体割手密资源抗逆功能标记的遗传多样性分析   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
整倍体割手密是现代甘蔗品种重要的野生亲本和抗逆性状基因源,为了明确其抗逆相关基因的遗传背景,该研究选用来自脱水绑定因子DREB、水通道蛋白AQP、热激蛋白HSP70、WRKY1转录因子和随机引物组成的5对抗旱和耐高温相关功能标记,以63份甘蔗常用亲本材料和8份甘蔗原种作为对照,对中国保育的50份十倍体割手密(Saccharum spontaneum L.)进行遗传多样性分析。结果显示:(1)5对引物共获得119个扩增片段,其中110个为多态性条带,平均多态性条带比例为92.44%,平均多态信息量为92.53%,十倍体割手密抗旱功能标记多态性最高,甘蔗常用亲本材料耐高温功能标记多态性最高。(2)十倍体割手密在抗旱功能标记上具有较低的平均相似性系数值(0.541)和最大的分布范围(0.347~0.800),且主要集中在0.400~0.600之间,而在耐高温功能标记上甘蔗常用亲本材料虽拥有最大的分布范围(0.238~1.000),但甘蔗原种具有最低的平均相似性系数值(0.481),且相似性系数范围主要集中在0.400~0.600之间。(3)UPGMA聚类可将参试材料划分为较明显的两个大组,十倍体割手密与甘蔗常用亲本和甘蔗原种在聚类关系上表现出明显的不同。研究表明,十倍体割手密资源无论是在抗旱功能标记DBF、Aqua方面,还是在耐高温功能标记SCB174、SCB190方面都与甘蔗常用亲本和甘蔗原种具有较大的遗传差异,而且在抗旱功能标记方面表现出更为丰富的遗传变异,因此在后续甘蔗品种抗逆性状改良和亲本创新上应进一步加大十倍体割手密资源的利用。  相似文献

Seven different hosts,Panicum maximum, Chrysopogon fulvis, Themeda triandra, Chloris gayana, Brachiaria brizantha, Paspalum scrobiculatum andEleusine coracana were screened in order to select a better host for mass multiplication ofGlomus fasciculatum inoculum. We examined the role of red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) in translocating phosphorus (P) from their preferred grazing sites (short-grass vegetation on subalpine grasslands) to their wider home range in a subalpine grassland ecosystem in the Central European Alps. Phosphorus was used because it is the limiting nutrient in these grasslands. When we compared P removal of aboveground biomass due to grazing with P input due to the deposit of feces on a grid of 268 cells (20 m × 20 m) covering the entire grassland, we detected distinct spatial patterns: the proportion of heavily grazed short-grass vegetation increased with increasing soil-P pool, suggesting that red deer preferably grazed on grid cells with a higher soil-P pool. Biomass consumption related to increased proportion of short-grass vegetation, and therefore P removal, increased with increasing soil-P pool. However, within the two vegetation types (short-grass and tall-grass), consumption was independent from soil-P pool. In addition, P input rates from defecation increased with increasing soil-P pool, resulting in a constant mean net P loss of 0.083 kg ha−1 y−1 (0.03%–0.07% of soil-P pool) independent of both soil-P pool and vegetation type. Thus, there was no P translocation between grid cells with different soil-P pools or between short-grass and tall-grass vegetation. Based on these results, it is likely that the net rate of P loss is too small to explain the observed changes in vegetation composition from tall-herb/meadow communities to short-grass and from tall-grass to short-grass on the grassland since 1917. Instead, we suggest that the grazing patterns of red deer directly induced succession from tall-herb/meadow communities to short-grass vegetation. Yet, it is also possible that long-term net soil-P losses indirectly drive plant succession from short-grass to tall-grass vegetation, because nutrient depletion could reduce grazing pressure in short-grass vegetation and enable the characteristic tall-grass species Carex sempervirens Vill. to establish.  相似文献

Seed protein electrophoresis confirms the existence of polymorphism among hexaploid populations ofFestuca arundinacea. Both protein and morphological results suggest thatF. pratensis andF. arundinacea should retain independent specific status. Wild barley shows a large morphological and phenotypic variation, which is associated with ecogeographical factors and correlates with genotypic differences. Diversity of defense related genes and their expression in wild barley has been recognized and has led to attempts to exploit genes from H. spontaneum in breeding programs. The aim of this study was to determine the variation in the accumulation of hordatines, which are Hordeum-specific preformed secondary metabolites with strong and broad antimicrobial activity in vitro, in 50 accessions of H. spontaneum from different habitats in Israel. Differences in the accumulation of hordatines in the seedling stage were significant between different H. spontaneum genotypes from different regional locations and micro-sites. Variation in the hordatine accumulation within genotypes was between 9% and 45%, between genotypes from the same location between 13% and 38%, and between genotypes from different locations up to 121%. Principal component analysis showed that water related factors explain 39%, temperature related factors explain 33% and edaphic factors account for 11% of the observed variation between the populations of H. spontaneum. Genetic analysis of the tested accessions with LP-PCR primers that are specific for genes involved in the biosynthetic pathway of hordatines showed tight correlations between hordatine abundance and genetic diversity of these markers. Multiple regression analyses indicated associations between genetic diversity of genes directly involved in hordatine biosynthesis, ecogeographical factors and the accumulation of hordatines.  相似文献

Seed protein electrophoresis of four chromosomes races ofFestuca arundinacea, F. mairei and their progenitors showed variation in banding patterns. High protein similarities betweenF. arundinacea, F. mairei, F. scariosa, andF. pratensis indicate close phylogenetic relationships of these species. Maize (Zea mays) is an important food crop in the foothills of the Nepal Himalaya Mountains. Surveys have found that maize in Nepal is contaminated withFusarium species, mainlyF. verticillioides andF. proliferatum, which produce fumonisins, andF. graminearum, which produces trichothecenes, mainly nivalenol and 4-deoxynivalenol. Maize from smallholder farms and markets is often contaminated with fumonisins and trichothecenes above 1000 ng/g, a level of concern for human health. These mycotoxins were not eliminated by traditional fermentation for producing maize beer, but Nepalese women were able to detoxify contaminated maize by hand-sorting visibly disease kernels. An integrated approach to reduce mycotoxins risks in maize in Nepal and other developing countries should include plant breeding to produce ear rot resistant cultivars, along with education in mycotoxins risks and in agricultural and grain storage practices to reduce mycotoxin contamination. 为研究历经三峡水库长期水淹的驯化后,不同海拔高程之间相同种源的甜根子草的生物量分配特征是否发生改变,进而探讨该物种对水淹胁迫表现出的适应性进化特征,试验于2008年初选育相同种源的甜根子草同龄幼苗栽植于三峡水库消落区甜根子草种植试验示范区,并考察了2012年、2013年不同海拔高程甜根子草植株的形态和生物量特征。试验共设置3个海拔高程,即水淹高程168、172m和不受水淹对照高程176m。试验结果表明:(1)较低高程的甜根子草植株较矮小细弱,168m高程的甜根子草植株主茎长和主茎基径显著低于对照176m高程(P0.05);平均节间长度随高程的降低而缩短;与之相反,主茎长/主茎基径随高程的降低而增大。(2)甜根子草的叶片厚度、叶片长/叶片宽、叶片长/叶鞘长均随海拔高程的降低而减小;与之相反,比叶面积随高程的降低而增大。(3)水淹前,甜根子草近端成熟节间的质量密度随高程的降低而增大;水淹后,其地上存活茎段基部成熟节间的质量密度在各高程之间无显著差异(P0.05)。以上研究结果表明,甜根子草历经三峡水库长期水淹的驯化后,生物量分配特征在不同海拔高程之间发生了改变,表现出了相应的驯化特征。相较于高高程的甜根子草植株而言,低高程的植株生长缓慢,采取低株高下的高向生物量投资策略;对叶的物质投资大部分分配到叶面积的增加、叶鞘的伸长生长和叶片的直立生长上,以加强植株的光合生产。  相似文献

Flower visitors on 12 species of New CaledonianWinteraceae were studied. The visitors were two species of ancestral moths (Sabatinca; Micropterigidae), three species of weevils (Palontus; Curculionidae), and a species of thrips. Behavior observations and pollen records suggest that the beetles and occasionally the moths serve as pollinators ofZygogynum and Exospermum, andBelliolum is pollinated primarily by thrips. The floral volatiles are simple in composition, usually dominated by short esters. Preliminary experiments showed that ethyl acetate elicited alighting, and a distinctive huddling behavior was elicited by artificially mixed fragrance. The host associations of otherSabatinca andPalontus spp. do not support the hypothesis that theWinteraceae have radiated in association with their pollinators. The available evidence supports the notion of opportunistic isolated host colonizations at some point in the radiation of the pollinator groups.  相似文献

Phylogeny of tall fescue and related species using RFLPs   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The wild species of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea var.genuina Schreb.) represent a wide range of genetic variation and constitute potential germplasm for tall fescue improvement. Our objective was to evaluate genome specificity of the previously-identified DNA probes and to examine the phylogenetic relationship of tall fescue with six related species by using RFLP data. A total of 29 DNA probes from aPstI-genomic library of tall fescue were hybridized toEcoRI-orHindIII-digested DNA of 32 plants from sixFestuca species and fromLolium perenne L. Fifteen probes hybridized to all seven species. The remaining 14 probes showed differential hybridization patterns (i.e., ±), especially at the diploid and tetraploid levels. This hybridization pattern reflected genome divergence in these species. The DNA probes will be useful markers in breeding programs involving interspecific and intergeneric hybridization. Cluster analyses were performed using the average genetic distances calculated with the RFLP data from 53 probe-enzyme combinations. Generally, genotypes from the same species were grouped in the same cluster. These data indicated that tall fescue has a close relationship withF. pratensis Huds. (diploid),F. arundinacea var.glaucescens Boiss. (tetraploid), andL. perenne L. Cultivated sugarcane clones (Saccharum spp., 2n=100 to 130) are derived from complex interspecific hybridizations between the speciesS. officinarum andS. spontaneum. Using comparative genomic DNA in situ hybridization, we demonstrated that it is possible to distinguish the chromosomes contributed by these two species in an interspecific F1 hybrid and a cultivated clone, R570. In the interspecific F1 studied, we observed n+n transmission of the parental chromosomes instead of the peculiar 2n+n transmission usually described in such crosses. Among the chromosomes of cultivar R570 (2n=107–115) about 10% were identified as originating fromS. spontaneum and about 10% were identified as recombinant chromosomes between the two speciesS. officinarum andS. spontaneum. This demonstrated for the first time the occurrence of recombination between the chromosomes of these two species. The rDNA sites were located by in situ hybridization in these two species and the cultivar R570. This supported different basic chromosome numbers and chromosome structural differences between the two species and provided a first bridge between physical and genetical mapping in sugarcane.  相似文献

磷是森林生态系统重要养分元素之一,是干旱半干旱地区植物生长的限制性因子。然而沙质草地转化为人工林生态系统后,林分的生长对沙地土壤磷素的变化及其影响机理还不清晰,为沙地合理经营和管理人工林带来了不确定性。以辽宁省章古台地区各生长阶段(幼龄林、中龄林、成熟林和过熟林阶段)的20块樟子松固沙林样地(在各生长阶段林分附近寻找1块天然草地作为对照样地)为研究对象,取样并测定样地各土层(0—10、10—20、20—40、40—60、60—80、80—100 cm)的土壤磷(全磷和速效磷)、土壤氮(全氮和速效氮)、土壤钾(全钾及速效钾)、土壤有机碳等含量以及土壤含水率、土壤pH值、土壤质地、土壤容重等因子值,并进行统计分析。结果表明:沙质草地营造樟子松人工林后,土壤全磷含量随林龄的增加而逐渐递增,成熟林时期达到最高,过熟林地全磷降低,且土壤全磷对土层深度不敏感。成熟林地的速效磷含量略高于幼林和中龄林;虽然与幼林、中龄林没有显著差异,但过熟林的土壤速效磷含量是所有林分中最低的。除了林分生长影响外,草地营造樟子松林后,土壤全磷的变化还受土壤容重和土壤速效氮含量的影响,而土壤速效磷的变化受土壤有机碳和pH...  相似文献

为了解虉草(Phalaris arundinacea)、牛鞭草(Hemarthria altissima)和狗牙根(Cynodon dactylon)3种水库消落带草本植物在完全水淹条件下的生理生态适应机制,对这3种植物的生态指标(枝条、叶和生物量)和生理指标(可溶性糖、淀粉和根系活力)的动态变化特征进行了研究。结果表明:在完全水淹条件下,虉草、牛鞭草和狗牙根都不产生新的枝条,它们通过减少总叶数、总叶长和生物量的方式来适应水淹环境。虉草和狗牙根通过减缓枝条生长速率来适应水淹环境,而牛鞭草则是通过先加快生长后抑制生长来保存活力。虉草、牛鞭草和狗牙根均以少量的碳水化合物(可溶性糖和淀粉)消耗,降低根系活力等方式来适应长期的水淹环境。3种草本植物的水淹耐受能力由大到小依次为狗牙根、虉草、牛鞭草。  相似文献
