A series of experiments were carried out on Pinus contorta Dougl. in Scotland to establish if there were any inter-provenance differences in suitability to three major forest pests: the pine beauty moth, Panolis flammea (D and S) (Lep., Noctuidae), the European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoff.) (Hym., Diprionidae), and the larch bud moth Zeiraphera diniana Guennée (Lep., Tortricidae). There were significant differences in the survival, weight, and development time of P. flammea on different provenances of seedling logepole pine. Southern interior lodgepole pine (ILP) proved to be the most resistant provenance. Larvae performed significantly better on Alaskan lodgepole pine (ALP) and Skeena River lodgepole pine (ELP). Panolis flammea larvae showed significant feeding preference for certain provenances of mature lodgepole pine, with ILP being preferred to ALP, north coastal lodgepole pine, and Scots pine. There were significant differences in the mean relative growth rate of N. sertifer on different provenances of seedling and mature trees. ALP was the most resistant provenance among seedling trees, but the least resistant among mature trees. There were also significant differences in survival on foliage from mature provenances. There were no significant differences in survival of second instar Z. diniana on different provenances of mature lodgepole pine.  相似文献

对中国马褂木6个种源(云南金平、浙江安吉、福建武夷山、贵州黎平、广西全州、江西庐山)一年生实生苗的苗高生长规律进行研究。结果表明:(1)各种源在苗高生长上存在着极显著的差异。(2)利用logistic曲线拟合其苗高生长方程,发现各种源苗高生长均呈现明显的"慢—快—慢"的"S"型生长节律。(3)利用有序样本聚类分析将苗木生长划分为幼苗期、生长前期、速生期、生长后期4个阶段,福建武夷山种源最早进入速生期,且持续时间最长,江西庐山种源最晚进入速生期,且持续时间最短。速生期苗高净生长量占总生长量最大的是浙江安吉种源,达56.05%;第二是福建武夷山;最小的是江西庐山种源,只有34.29%。(4)依据苗高和地径两个性状的聚类分析把6个种源分成三大类,第一类是全州种源,苗高生长表现最好;第二类是金平、安吉、武夷山、黎平种源;第三类是庐山种源。  相似文献

A study was conducted on the variation in growth, biomass, juvenile wood anatomy, and needle morphology of Pinus halepensis Mill. from three Spanish regions of provenance characterized by environmental differences, without the influence of the site factor. Seeds collected from two progenies in each region were planted in a single plot, and the trees were felled at the age of 7 years. The results showed significant differences between provenances, as well as the genetic or environmental influence on the traits analyzed. Trees adapted to moderate summer drought conditions (Inland Catalonia region) are primarily characterized by higher average values for height, diameter, biomass, cell wall thickness, inter-tracheid wall strength, pit membrane diameter, torus diameter, bordered pit aperture diameter, and ray tracheid abundance in comparison with trees adapted to severe summer drought conditions (Southern region and Balearic Islands region). The greater structural requirements of trees from the Inland Catalonia region, subjected to higher weight and wind loads, resulted in thick cell walls. Moreover, the large pits and more abundant ray tracheids in trees from this provenance would allow more efficient water transport and greater water storage capacity, respectively. The differences found between provenances suggest the adaptive nature of the anatomy of this species, which demonstrates the importance of the region of provenance when choosing reproduction material for reforestation.  相似文献

Laboratory rearing of spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana, in conjunction with field rearing, gravimetric analyses, a transfer experiment, and foliage chemical analyses at six dates during the period of budworm feeding activity indicated that the age of balsam fir, Abies balsamea, trees (70-year-old mature trees or 30-year-old juvenile trees) affected tree suitability for the spruce budworm via the chemical profile of the foliage. Insects reared on old trees had greater survival and pupal weight, shorter development times, and caused more defoliation than those reared on young trees. Young trees were more suitable for the development of young larvae (instars 2–5), while old trees were more suitable for the development of older, sixth-instar larvae. These results were confirmed by the laboratory transfer experiment. Young larvae fed foliage from young trees had higher relative growth rates (RGR), digestibility (AD), and efficiency of conversion of ingested foliage (ECI) than those fed foliage from old trees. These differences appeared to be related to the high N:tannins ratio, and the high contents of P present in young trees during the development of the young larvae. Old larvae fed foliage from old trees had higher relative growth rates, relative consumption rates (RCR), and digestibility of the foliage than those fed foliage from young trees. The high digestibility of the foliage of old trees was compensated for by a lower efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), which in turn resulted in no significant effect of tree age on the efficiency of conversion of ingested foliage by old larvae. The low relative consumption rate of old larvae fed foliage from young trees appeared to be related to the low N:tannins ratio, and the high contents of bornyl acetate, terpinolene, and °-3-carene present in young trees during the budworm sixth instar. Variations in these compounds in relation to tree age may serve as mechanisms of balsam fir resistance to spruce budworm by reducing the feeding rate of sixth instar larvae.  相似文献

Variation in seedling growth and form between provenances of Podocarpus totara from 42 sites throughout New Zealand was investigated. Seedlings were grown for three years under uniform nursery conditions. There were significant differences between provenances in height growth in the first three years after sowing. Early growth was highly correlated with germination rate after sowing. In the third year, growth followed a different pattern and was negatively correlated with provenance latitude, i.e., provenances from southern latitudes grew more slowly than those from further north. This suggests that genetic factors correlated with mean summer temperature of the locality of seed source were beginning to predominate. Stem form and branch length also varied between provenances, but foliage colour and leaf size did not. Neither stem form nor branch length were related to any provenance site variable. Since provenance variation is appreciable, it is recommended that P. totara plantings for ecological purposes should be of seedlings raised from locally collected seed. However, for growing P. totara in plantations to produce special-purpose high value timber, considerable scope exists for an in-depth breeding study that will eventually lead to producing planting stock with both superior height growth and good tree form.  相似文献

  • 1 A combination of variables reflecting leaf quality provided the best predictive model explaining differences in population trend of Glycaspis spp. among individuals of the food plant Eucalyptus blakelyi, measured under field conditions on an egg to egg basis. The equation incorporated the product of: (1) proportion of foliage in each age class; (2) probability of foliage escape from herbivory; (3) preference for the foliage class measured as the proportion of eggs oviposited on it by the female; these variables being summed over the young and mature age classes.
  • 2 In addition, significant and consistent differences in insect survivorship among trees were demonstrated by transfer experiments. These experiments established that young foliage was preferable to mature foliage for first instar survival. Differences in insect survivorship also showed a consistent pattern among the study trees. The most probable explanation for this consistent pattern was the influence of the trees on the insects, particularly physiological or biochemical differences among trees. It was not, however, possible to identify the cause of the differences.

1 Attack by shoot borers (Hypsipyla grandella Zeller) is the main factor limiting the cultivation of Cedrela odorata and Swietenia macrophylla, two economically important members of the mahogany family. No viable methods of pest control are currently available. To assess for genetic variation in susceptibility to pest attack, a combined progeny/provenance test of C. odorata and a provenance test of S. macrophylla were established separately at CATIE, Turrialba, Costa Rica, and assessed intensively over an 84-week period. 2 Variation in height growth between provenances was highly significant in both species, provenance means varying by a factor of 2.7 and 1.2 in C. odorata and S. macrophylla, respectively. Cedrela odorata also displayed provenance variation in foliar phenology, as 94.7% of the trees from a ‘wet zone’ provenance remained foliated, whereas > 35% of trees from three ‘dry zone’ provenances abscised their leaves during the dry season. 3 Both species displayed significant genetic variation in susceptibility to shoot borer attack. At the peak of attack during the second year of growth, the effect of provenance was highly significant in both species, the mean number of attacks per tree varying between 0.8–2.4 and 0.6–1.3 in different provenances of C. odorata and S. macrophylla, respectively. A provenance of C. odorata from San Carlos, Costa Rica, displayed consistently lower susceptibility to pest attack, being subjected to fewer attacks during the first year and demonstrating a higher mean height to first point of damage. 4 The nitrogen, total tannin and proanthocyanidin concentration of foliage varied significantly between C. odorata provenances: nitrogen concentration was significantly lower and tannin and proanthocyanidin contents were significantly higher in trees from the San Carlos provenance, Costa Rica. This study therefore suggests that proanthocyanidins may reduce susceptibility of C. odorata to H. grandella, at least during the early period of growth. 5 These results provide support for the development of plant resistance as a strategy for managing shoot borers. In particular, there may be scope for selecting for high foliar proanthocyanidin content and the ability to tolerate attack by vigorous apical growth.  相似文献

Growth and form traits data were obtained from eight provenance trials of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) planted across the radiata pine plantation estate in southeast Australia. The genetic pool included 466 open-pollinated families collected from A?o Nuevo, Monterey and Cambria provenances on the Californian mainland coast in the USA and from Guadalupe and Cedros islands off the coast of Baja California in Mexico. Early survival of all provenances was around 90%, except for Cedros (<60%). Monterey and A?o Nuevo were the best performers at almost all sites. However, good growth performance of Cambria and good stem straightness of Guadalupe on some sites are important results, because the genetic base of the present Australian plantations evidently originated from only Monterey and A?o Nuevo. The average estimated single-site heritability for diameter at breast height was 0.22 and 0.32 at juvenile and mature ages, respectively. Heritability estimates for stem straightness and branching ranged from 0.23 to 0.55. Genetic correlation estimates between diameter at breast height (DBH) at juvenile and rotation ages were all >0.80. Estimates of between-site genetic and provenance correlations for DBH were often low, indicating high genotype by environment interaction across trials, consistent with previous Australian studies. However, there was minimal G × E among trials on high-altitude high-rainfall sites and among trials on low-altitude, low-rainfall sites.  相似文献

为选择短枝木麻黄(Casuarina equisetifolia)的优良家系,对来自10个国家23个种源109个家系的短枝木麻黄生长性状进行综合选择。结果表明,造林42个月后短枝木麻黄的树高、胸径、单株材积、抗虫性、健康状况和保存率在种源和家系间均存在极显著或显著差异。印度种源(18118)、中国种源(18267、18268和18586)、泰国种源(21199、18299和18297)在生长速度上表现较好;肯尼亚种源(18144、18142、18135)、澳大利亚种源(17862)、瓦努阿图种源(18312和18565)的抗虫性较好;瓦努阿图种源(18312)和肯尼亚种源(18142)的健康状况表现较好;中国种源(18586)、越南种源(18128)和肯尼亚种源(18144)的保存率较高。单株材积的遗传力最高,保存率和抗虫性的较低,健康状况的最低。利用单株材积、抗虫性、健康状况和保存率进行指数选择,按25%的入选率,28个综合性状优良的家系可作为下一步杂交育种的遗传材料。  相似文献

为选择巨桉(Eucalyptus grandis)优良种源,对其13个种源177个家系性状进行遗传分析。结果表明,22月生巨桉除生长量在区组间差异显著外,其他性状在种源、家系和区组间均存在极显著的差异;50月生时各性状差异均达极显著水平。50月生时,单株材积位于前四的种源分别是2号(来自昆士兰州Copperlode)、3号(来自昆士兰州Ravenshoe)、1号(来自昆士兰州N W Townsille)和11号(来自四川省黑龙滩)。50月生时,有78个家系的单株材积增长量超过总体家系平均值(0.08 m3),位于前三的家系是分别为2号(来自2号种源)、156号(来自福建天马东溪的10号种源)和93号(来自昆士兰州Bambaroo的8号种源)。50月生巨桉的胸径、树高、单株材积、干形、分枝和冠幅的遗传力分别为0.56、0.91、0.73、0.67、0.64和0.76;这些性状的表型变异系数分别为26.64%、29.37%、64.41%、17.58%、15.26%和45.80%;遗传变异系数分别为25.94%、24.30%、60.97%、28.59%、26.07%和42.96%。相关性分析表明,冠幅和分枝呈较小的负相关,其余各性状间均呈正相关性。结合生长指标和形质指标,最终筛选出4个优良种源和18个优良家系。  相似文献

Survival and growth of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) from 25 provenances in the natural distributional range were examined at three test sites in central Japan. Climatic conditions of the sites and provenances indicated a contrast between northwest and southeast locations across the distributional range. Density, height, diameter, and crookedness of stems and width and length of branches were measured for 50-year-old trees, and per-area cross-sectional area and volume of stems were calculated. Variance components among the provenances were large in the stem area and volume (27–33 %) and the branch width (26 %); those among the sites were large in the stem height, diameter, and density (70–81 %); and those of interaction between sites and provenances were small (0–12 %) in all the variables. Principal component analyses showed that eastern provenances exhibited large size of stems and branches at most sites. Growth rate and maximum size at each site were estimated from fitting the stem volume at three ages (12, 31 or 32, and 50 years) to growth curves in logistic functions. Eastern provenances, where seasonal variation is least in temperature and most in precipitation, showed the highest performance of stem and branch growth. The findings from our long-term survey of the L. kaempferi provenance tests suggest climatic effects on survival and growth traits and potential provenances from which to select new breeding materials.  相似文献

In view of the projected decrease in precipitation and increase in temperature, a better understanding on growth-climate responses in different populations of tree species is needed to improve and enhance the conservation and management strategies for major forest tree species. In this study, we assessed differences in growth traits (i.e., stem diameter, tree height, and stem radial growth) and analysed climate-growth relationships in five provenances of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) grown in four replicated common gardens in Sardinia (Italy). Stem radial growth increased under a positive water balance in late winter and early spring. Conversely, high temperature and low precipitation in summer had a negative impact on stem radial growth. At age 40, none of the considered provenances (Portugal, Corsica, Tuscany, Sardinia-Telti, Sardinia-Limbara) showed a substantial advantage in more than one common garden site for tree height and stem diameter. Nevertheless, differences were found among common garden sites in terms of dendrometric parameters, stem radial growth, and growth-climate responses (including sensitivity to summer drought), suggesting a greater site dependent over tree growth. Although in juvenile stages the Portuguese provenance (in particular) showed greater growth than the Sardinian ones, this study showed that, with tree age, the differences among the five provenances tends to narrow. Therefore, irrespective of the seed source, tree growth patterns and growth-climate responses were similar at age 40. This result can be important for implementing forest management strategies to balance adaptation and mitigation potential of maritime pine plantations in harsh environmental conditions.  相似文献

为了解不同种源花榈木在贵阳的生长特性和差异,该文通过对10个种源地花榈木进行育苗试验,测定其两年生实生苗的苗高、地径、生物量、叶片光合参数、光合色素、硝酸还原酶活性、硝态氮含量和根系活力,并进行差异性分析。结果表明:(1)10个种源花榈木净光合速率、气孔导度、胞间CO2浓度、蒸腾速率和水分利用效率差异显著(P<0.05),表明不同种源花榈木光合特性及光能利用效率具有较大差异,浙江杭州和浙江永康花榈木是具有较高光合生长潜力的种源。(2)种源间的叶绿素含量、硝酸还原酶、硝态氮、根系活力存在显著差异,福建建瓯种源的叶绿素a、叶绿素b含量和叶绿素总量最高,能够将光合原初反应过程中积蓄的光能进行高效地传递,促进碳的同化; 贵州花溪种源硝酸还原酶活性最大,硝态氮含量最高,对氮元素的利用能力较强,能够促进植物蛋白质、氨基酸和叶绿素等的合成; 贵州望谟种源根系活力最大,吸收养分的能力强。(3)各种源间苗高、地径和生物量的分配存在显著差异,浙江杭州种源的植株枝叶繁茂、根系发达,生长表现好,安徽黄山种源的植株矮小,生长表现较差; 浙江杭州种源将生物量更多分配在根和叶,提高其根系吸收养分和叶片获取光能的能力,安徽黄山种源总体生物量积累最少,长势最差。(4)通过主成分分析法对各种源的花榈木适应性进行综合评价,结果显示浙江杭州种源>贵州黎平种源>浙江永康种源>贵州望谟种源>福建建瓯种源>贵州凯里种源>贵州石阡种源>贵州花溪种源>贵州平塘种源>安徽黄山种源。综上结果表明,浙江杭州、贵州黎平和浙江永康种源花榈木对贵阳地区立地环境具有较强的适应能力和生长潜力。  相似文献

Two strains of a geometrid defoliator, Epirrita autumnata, were used in bioassays to test existence and relative efficacy of rapid, wound-induced foliage resistance in two provenances of the white birch. One birch and one moth strain originated in the outbreak range of the moth and another outside it. Both birch provenances responded to manual leaf damage by changes in foliage quality which significantly retarded growth of the insects, reducing their pupal weights and protracting larval periods. Leaves which were previously damaged were lower quality as Epirrita food than adjacent intact leaves. Both of them were lower quality than intact leaves without damaged leaves nearby. Because of variance between years in the efficacy of the response, and because of different transfer distances of the provenances to the common garden where the experiments were performed, we could not ascertain whether there is any overall difference in the efficacy of rapid inducible responses between the provenances. Both moth strains were affected by wound-induced deterioration in foliage quality. There were no differences in how the moth strains experienced inducible resistance in the two birch provenances. Moths achieved relatively higher pupal weights on the birch provenance matching their origin. Moths from the outbreak range completed their larval period in a shorter time and pupated in a smaller size and, due to dependence of fecundity on size, had a lower potential rate of increase than insects outside the outbreak range.  相似文献

The symbiotic biological N2fixation by Acacia senegal was estimated using the 15N natural abundance (δ 15N) procedure on eight provenances collected from different environments and soil types grown in a clay soil in the Blue Nile region, Sudan. Balanites aegyptiaca (a non-legume) was used as a non-N2-fixing reference plant to allow 15N-based estimates of the proportion of the Acacia N derived from atmospheric N2 (Ndfa) to be calculated. Results show variation in leaf δ 15N between A. senegal and the reference plant and among years. The relative δ 15N values (‰) were higher in B. aegyptiaca than in the N2-fixing acacia provenances. Provenances originally collected from clay soils fixed little N in the first year, but the amount fixed increased as the trees aged. All provenances showed a decrease in δ 15N with age. The Ndfa varied between 24% (Mazmoom provenance) and 61% (Rahad provenance) 4 years after planting. There was no significant difference in δ 15N between provenance groups based on soil type or rainfall at original growing site. The amount of Ndfa increased significantly with age in all provenances. The above-ground contribution of fixed N to foliage growth in a 4-year-old A. senegal was highest in the Rahad sand–soil provenance (46.7 kg N ha−1) and lowest in the Mazmoom clay-soil provenance (28.7 kg N ha−1). Our study represents the first use of the δ 15N method for estimating the N input by A. senegal to the clay plain soils of the gum belt in the Sudan.  相似文献

Abstract
  • 1 Objectives of this study were to examine (i) between‐provenance variation in susceptibility to insects in Eucalyptus globulus and (ii) relationships between insect damage and tree growth. We planted seedlings of 18 provenances of E. globulus from south‐east Australia in a field trial and measured tree growth and insect damage.
  • 2 Christmas beetles Anoplognathus spp. were the dominant herbivores during this experiment, and 99% of trees were affected by them. Defoliation of individual trees by Anoplognathus spp. ranged from 0% to 85%.
  • 3 The main results of this study were that: (i) provenances of E. globulus from Tasmania and the Bass Strait islands, which had previously shown resistance to autumn gum moth Mnesampela privata and leaf blister sawfly Phylacteophaga froggatti tended to be resistant to Anoplognathus spp.; (ii) mean tree volume was reduced by herbivory; and (iii) the volume‐based performance ranking of provenances changed depending on the probability of insect outbreaks.
  • 4 Fast‐growing provenances should be planted in optimal growing areas for E. globulus with low probability of insect outbreaks. However, in suboptimal growing areas, planting slightly slower growing but more resistant provenances is likely to result in greater output than planting fast‐growing provenances when the probability of insect outbreaks is high.

Growth within tree populations varies among individuals due to changes in biotic and abiotic factors. The degree of such variation, defined as growth inequality, serves as a useful indicator of the uniformity of growth within a population in response to the prevalent environmental conditions. By application of the Gini coefficient (G), an index for inequality, we characterized the early growth inequality of ninety crosses of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) and their open-pollinated parental lines. Tree cumulative height was measured annually for 8 consecutive years. Both the crosses and parental lines exhibited temporal changes in growth inequality. The inequality of total height among the crosses decreased logarithmically with age by nearly 3-fold after 13 growing seasons, suggesting that tree height became less variable among the crosses as trees grew larger. Interestingly, the Lorenz asymmetry, an index reflecting the shape of the Lorenze curve from which G is derived, revealed that the inequality of annual height increment among the crosses resulted from an alternate contribution of the fast-growing and slow-growing trees. Among parental lines, two provenances with the smallest and the largest overall inequality in total height showed a similar pattern of changes in annual growth inequality, and the provenance differences were consistent over time. Compared to the other provinces, a local provenance exhibited less variation in total height among individual trees as reflected by a smaller value of inequality, and was better adapted to the field conditions. Our results demonstrated the sensitivity and usefulness of the Gini coefficient and Lorenz asymmetry for the analysis of growth inequality in non-natural populations. Growth inequality is a potentially useful evaluation criterion for early selection. Given comparable initial growth, provenances/families with lower growth inequality values would likely outperform those with higher growth inequality, and eventually tree size of the latter would be more variable due to greater variations among individual trees. Assessment of growth inequality at early ages will advance our understanding of variability of tree growth within a population, facilitate forest genetics improvement programs, and enhance the efficiency of tree breeding.  相似文献

The time course of maturation in eastern larch (Larix laricina [Du Roi] K. Koch) was examined by grafting scions from trees of different ages onto 2-year-old root stock and following scion development for several years. Height, diameter, foliar chlorophyll content, and rooting ability of scion-derived cuttings all varied linearly as a function of log10 age. Chlorophyll content (milligrams per gram of dry weight) increased while height, diameter, and ability to root decreased with age (P < 0.01). The tendency toward orthotropic growth and branch formation per centimeter of main stem decreased abruptly between age 1 and 5 years (P < 0.01). Total chlorophyll content of both long and short shoot foliage increased by 30 to 50% with increasing age, but the chlorophyll a/b ratio did not change. Also, juvenile long shoot needles were significantly longer than mature (P < 0.01). Surprisingly, the juvenile scions produced more total strobili over two successive years, but the mature scions produced a significantly higher proportion of male strobili (P < 0.001 year 1; P < 0.02 year 2). The age-related changes in foliar traits were not associated with changes in DNA methylation between juvenile and mature scions. Using HPLC, we found that 20% of foliar DNA cytosine residues were methylated in both scion types.  相似文献

Growth responses ofCasuarina cunninghamiana to inoculation withFrankia are described in unsterilized field soils at three sites. At Mt Crawford, South Australia, seedlings of three provenances ofC. cunninghamiana were inoculated with a singleFrankia source just prior to planting out. Forty-four months after planting, inoculation had more than doubled wood production by twoC. cunninghamiana provenances, whilst a third provenance grew poorly and did not respond to inoculation. In Zimbabwe, seedlings of one provenance ofC. cunninghamiana were inoculated in the nursery with one of four differentFrankia strains. In an N deficient soil at Kadoma, three of theseFrankia increased tree height 14 months after planting by between 50% and 70% in comparison to the uninoculated seedlings. The fourthFrankia strain resulted in increased tree height to three times that of the uninoculated controls and up to double that of the other threeFrankia strains. At Gympie, Queensland, Australia, seedlings ofC. cunninghamiana raised open-rooted in a nursery bed were inoculated withFrankia seventeen weeks before planting out. During the 22 months following planting in the field, tree growth was limited by soil P status and there was no response in tree height or stem diameter to inoculation withFrankia or to N fertilizer unless P was applied. In the presence of added P there was a significant response both toFrankia inoculation and to N fertilizer. This positive interaction between P application and N treatment was reflected in wood volumes-inoculated trees and those trees supplied N fertilizer produced 34% and 95% more wood volume than did the uninoculated trees. The extent to which individual host trees maintain their relative quality over time may affect patterns of abundance, distribution and microevolution in herbivorous insects. In this study, we explore temporal consistency in the quality of oak Quercus robur foliage, using leaf‐chewing larvae of the moth Amphipyra pyramidea as our model herbivores. By utilising an artificial diet, we are able to isolate the impact of chemical contents from physical attributes, and thereby to ask to what extent purely chemical parameters create tree‐to‐tree differences in host quality, how consistent such differences are among trees between different parts of a single growth season, and to what extent individual moth larvae are able to compensate for chemical variation in food quality. We find that with physical traits controlled for, chemical traits suffice to create strong differences in larval growth rates between trees, and between larvae fed on young and mature foliage. Nevertheless, these initial differences are efficiently compensated for the fact that larvae with lower growth rates continue to grow for a longer time, and thereby end up at the same size as larvae with high growth rates. At the pupal stage, we could no longer detect differences between either larvae fed foliage from different trees or between larvae fed young versus mature foliage – despite notably little variation among individuals within each group. Such compensatory responses were also reflected in patterns of consistency. The intraclass correlation for larval weight was relatively high (ρ=0.45), but lower for development time (ρ=0.26), and non‐existent for pupal weight (ρ=0.00). These results suggest that in terms of pupal mass, A. pyramidea is able to compensate more or less completely for differences in resource quality, that patterns of consistency vary with the specific trait examined, and that the net effect of spatiotemporal variation in host plant quality on herbivore fitness should be dissected by experiments aimed at different life history traits. If slow growth comes with high mortality, spatiotemporal patterns in resource quality may have a major impact on herbivore fitness; if not, the patterns may be nullified by efficient compensatory mechanisms.  相似文献
