The amount of phenotypic variation between conspecifics is largely a result of the opposing forces of constraint and plasticity. Because selection is the product of competition between individuals of the same species, understanding the interactions between these forces is vital to understanding evolution. We investigated levels of intraspecific variation in the catarrhine skeleton using a morphometric analysis of 245 crania and 189 appendicular postcranial skeletons. We identified regions of interest from the literature and made comparisons of intraspecific variation between the appendicular postcranium and cranium, the forelimb and hind limb, the diaphyses and epiphyses of long bones, and the diaphyses of the proximal and distal segments of the limbs. We confirmed that variation is significantly higher in the appendicular postcranium than in the cranium, in the forelimb compared to the hind limb, and in the diaphyses compared to the epiphyses. Further, we found that this pattern was repeated in 12 species spanning the infraorder, suggesting a characteristic of catarrhines in general. The relatively low level of variation in the cranium suggests that constraint is more widespread in this region compared to the appendicular postcranium, which is more plastic, especially in the diaphyses of the forelimb. In contrast to previous studies, we found the diaphyses of the distal segment to be more variable than the diaphyses of the proximal segment. The results from this study, which show regional differences in intraspecific variation, will aid the interpretation of evolutionary and plastic influences on morphological variation and inform decisions about which skeletal regions are suitable for answering specific evolutionary questions.  相似文献

Juvenile mortality is an important problem in the development of captive populations. I compiled data from published literature on abortion, premature mortality, stillbirth, and death of unweaned young. Cumulative mortality incidences (CMI) during the first month in captive populations (CP) of Cercopithecoidea range between 13 and 51%, and CMI in the first year between 28 and 56%. Mortality rate during the first year ranges between <4 and 48% in free- ranging populations (FRP) and between 10 and 60% in wild populations (WP). Much of the juvenile mortality in CP appears to occur in the first month, whereas in FRP and WP mortality is more scattered throughout the juvenile period. High mortality rates occur in both CP and WP of nonhuman Hominoidea. Mortality rate during the first month in CP is between 12 and 36% for the Hylobatidae and between 18 and 31% for the Pongidae. If the entire juvenile period is considered, gorilla CP and WP have comparable CMI, while CMI is higher in WP than CP for chimpanzees. Most of the juvenile mortality in CP of chimpanzees occurs before the age of 1 year. Trauma, including infanticide and maternal inadequacy, seems to be a more important factor in infant mortality of Cercopithecoidea than infectious disease is. Relatively frequent reports of congenital, hereditary, and/or genetically determined malformations in the Cercopithecoidea may be related to the long use of animals in this group for laboratory purposes. Infectious disease is the most important cause of nonhuman hominoid juvenile mortality, followed by trauma and maternal disorders, particularly related aberrant maternal behavior. Cercopithecoid juvenile mortality risk factors most frequently mentioned in the literature are sex of the infant and rank of the mother: dominant females produce more female offspring, and juvenile males suffer higher mortality than females do. The female skewed sex ratio at birth in gorillas and chimpanzees could be explained by the local resource competition theory. Higher male mortality rates occur in nonhuman Hominoidea, except in two Hylobatesspp. and Pan paniscus,which have higher female mortality. Parity and rearing history of the mother are very important risk factors in nonhuman hominoid infant mortality.  相似文献

The langurs of the genus Presbytis inhabit tropical rainforests of Sundaland, and with more than 50 color variants grouped in up to eleven species, Presbytis is one of the most diverse Old World monkey genera. The number of taxa and their phylogenetic relationships however remain controversial. To address these issues, we analyzed a 1.8 kb long fragment of the mitochondrial genome, including the cytochrome b gene, the hypervariable region I of the D-loop and the intermediate tRNAs, from individuals representing nine species. Based on our data, we obtained various well-supported terminal clades, which refer mainly to described taxa. Relationships among these clades are not fully resolved, suggesting at least two radiations in the evolutionary history of the genus. According to divergence age estimates, radiations occurred in the late Miocene and the early to middle Pleistocene. Our findings support the revision of the current classification of the genus Presbytis and enable us to discuss implications for conservation. However, further studies including nuclear sequence data are necessary to completely understand the evolutionary history of the genus, and to address possible hybridization events among taxa.  相似文献

The inclusion of the Cunoniaceae within a rosalean alliance is unquestioned, but its position in such an alliance is uncertain. In respect of proanthocyanidins, flavonols, ellagitannins and absence of iridoids the most closely similar taxa are Saxifragaceae-Saxifragoideae and Rosaceae-Rosoideae, but in their xerophytic, arborescent habit and present and past southern hemisphere distribution the Cunoniaceae are very different from either. In these (but not in chemical) respects an analogy can be found in the Proteaceae, and a detached position similar to that assigned to this family in Dahlgren's system seems appropriate for the Cunoniaceae.  相似文献

Flavonoids of 11 samples of Cercis, comprising seven species, were isolated and identified. Only 3-O-monoglycosides of kaempferol, quercetin and myricetin were obtained. Bauhinia (the largest genus in tribe Cercideae) is akin to Cercis because flavones are rarely found in the former. On the other hand, species of Bauhinia often present glycosides of isorhamnetin and a wider diversity of glycosides, and only rarely present myricetin. The frequent occurrence of this flavonol and the simpler flavonoid profile of Cercis may reflect a greater antiquity of Cercis as compared with Bauhinia. With the exception of C. canadensis var. mexicana, Cercis taxa from xerophytic habitats did not yield kaempferol glycosides in detectable amounts, as opposed to taxa from mesophytic habitats. The results obtained are consistent with proposals of merging C. reniformis into synonymy of C. occidentalis, as well as the recognition of two North American species, C. canadensis and C. occidentalis, and the recognition of the Asian C. gigantea.  相似文献

An easily accessible taxonomic knowledge base is critically important for all biodiversity-related sciences. At present, taxonomic information is organized and regulated by a system of rules and conventions that date back to the introduction of binomial nomenclature by Linnaeus. The taxonomy of any particular group of organisms comprises the sum information in the taxonomic literature, supported by designated type specimens in major collections. In this article, the way modern means of disseminating information will change the practice of taxonomy, in particular the Internet, is explored. Basic taxonomic information, such as specimen-level data, location of types, and name catalogues are already available, at least for some groups, on the Web. Specialist taxonomic databases, key-construction programs, and other software useful for systematists are also increasingly available. There has also been a move towards Web-publishing of taxonomic hypotheses, though as yet this is not fully permitted by the Codes of Nomenclature. A further and more radical move would be to transfer taxonomy completely to the Web. A possible model of this is discussed, as well as a pilot project, the "CATE" initiative, which seeks to explore the advantages and disadvantages of such a move. It is argued that taxonomy needs to forge better links with its user-communities to maintain its funding base, and that an important part of this is making the products of its research more accessible through the Internet.  相似文献

The taxonomy and biogeography of the Cladocera   总被引:14,自引:13,他引:1  
For a variety of reasons, including the analysis of a number of taxa having the same names on different continents, we have concluded overwhelmingly that the chydorid Cladocera are not cosmopolitan in distribution but instead are restricted to smaller regions by their specific ecological requirements for habitat type and also by long-term events in earth history. Recent study ofChydorus faviformis and species resembling it indicates there has been no effective exchange of genetic material between North America and South America, nor between Australia and Asia, nor even between China, Malaysia, and India in southern Asia. Moreover, the patterns of distribution are even narrower than this, as in North America, for example, taxa having the same names in the southern states as in the northern states are differentiated at the species level in some instances, possibly in most. Southern species push northward along the Atlantic Coast for varying distances, one species having reached Nova Scotia and Newfoundland probably during the warm interval in mid-Postglacial time. Thus, when species are studied closely to define their morphological limits, cosmopolitanism disappears, and patterns of distribution emerge that are very similar to those of other animals and plants. The ‘species’ that have been claimed to be cosmopolitan are being shown to be groups or complexes of morphologically similar species instead, each member species of which has a much more restricted distribution than the group or complex as a whole. To explain how the different continents can have such similar lists of ‘species’ without intercontinental dispersal of resting eggs occurring almost continuously, we are suggesting plate tectonics and the drifting of continents, either apart or together.  相似文献

There has been much discussion of the “taxonomic impediment”. This phrase confuses two kinds of impediment: an impediment to end users imposed by lack of reliable information; and impediments to taxonomy itself, which vary from insufficient funding to low citation rates of taxonomic monographs. In order to resolve both these types of impediment, taxonomy needs to be revitalized through funding and training taxonomists, as well as investing in taxonomic revisions and monographs rather than technological surrogates such as DNA barcoding.

Since Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, the idea of descent with modification came to dominate systematics, and so the study of morphology became subgugated to the reconstruction of phylogenies. Reinstating the organism in the theory of evolution (Ho &; Saunders, 1979; Webster &; Goodwin, 1982) leads to a project inrational taxonomy (Ho, 1986, 1988a), which attempts to classify biological forms on the basis of transformations on a given dynamical structure. Does rational taxonomy correspond to thenatural system that Linnaeus and his contemporaries as well as all pre-Darwinian morphologists had in mind? Here, we examine how rational taxonomy and the natural system can coincide in the dynamics of processes generating forms during development, which conferexclusivity, genericity androbustness to the forms that do exist. We use the example of segmentation, especially inDrosophila, as an illustration to explore the implications of rational taxonomy for evolution and systematics, and the relationship between ontogeny and phylogeny.  相似文献

The enzyme activities of 37 representative strains of Acanthamoeba against 19 substrates have been examined. A total of 13 enzyme complements were identified, which could be arranged in six larger groups. There was good agreement between these groupings and the arrangement of the strains that was suggested by the electrophoresis patterns of their esterases and acid phosphatases. A numericlature is described which provides an unequivocal numerical label for each enzyme complement.  相似文献

Carbohydrates released during acid hydrolysis of intact cells ofDipodascus were studied by gas-liquid chromatographic analysis as their trimethylsilyl derivatives. In addition, cells were characterized by pyrolysis gas-liquid chromatography and pyrolysis mass spectrometry. The data obtained support the classification ofDipodascus uninucleatus in a separate genusDipodascopsis. Glucuronic acid is present inD. uninucleatus and, therefore, a possible affinity to fungi classified in the Zygomycetes is considered.Dipodascus aggregatus andDipodascus australiensis were found to be rather different, but very close toGeotrichum candidum and related species.  相似文献
