Human performance on various visual tasks can be improved substantially via training. However, the enhancements are frequently specific to relatively low-level stimulus dimensions. While such specificity has often been thought to be indicative of a low-level neural locus of learning, recent research suggests that these same effects can be accounted for by changes in higher-level areas–in particular in the way higher-level areas read out information from lower-level areas in the service of highly practiced decisions. Here we contrast the degree of orientation transfer seen after training on two different tasks—vernier acuity and stereoacuity. Importantly, while the decision rule that could improve vernier acuity (i.e. a discriminant in the image plane) would not be transferable across orientations, the simplest rule that could be learned to solve the stereoacuity task (i.e. a discriminant in the depth plane) would be insensitive to changes in orientation. Thus, given a read-out hypothesis, more substantial transfer would be expected as a result of stereoacuity than vernier acuity training. To test this prediction, participants were trained (7500 total trials) on either a stereoacuity (N = 9) or vernier acuity (N = 7) task with the stimuli in either a vertical or horizontal configuration (balanced across participants). Following training, transfer to the untrained orientation was assessed. As predicted, evidence for relatively orientation specific learning was observed in vernier trained participants, while no evidence of specificity was observed in stereo trained participants. These results build upon the emerging view that perceptual learning (even very specific learning effects) may reflect changes in inferences made by high-level areas, rather than necessarily fully reflecting changes in the receptive field properties of low-level areas. 相似文献

The mechanism of ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid oxidation by wild-type cyclooxygenase 2 and the Y334F variant, lacking a conserved hydrogen bond to the catalytic tyrosyl radical/tyrosine, was examined for the first time under physiologically relevant conditions. The enzymes show apparent bimolecular rate constants and deuterium kinetic isotope effects that increase in proportion to co-substrate concentrations before converging to limiting values. The trends exclude multiple dioxygenase mechanisms as well as the proposal that initial hydrogen atom abstraction from the fatty acid is the first irreversible step in catalysis. Temperature dependent kinetic studies reinforce the novel finding that hydrogen transfer from the reduced catalytic tyrosine to a terminal peroxyl radical is the first irreversible step that controls regio- and stereospecific product formation. 相似文献

We describe a method to solve stereo correspondence using controlled eye (or camera) movements. Eye movements supply additional image frames and monocular depth estimate, which can be used to constrain stereo matching. Because the eye movements are small, traditional stereo techniques of stereo with multiple frame will not work. We develop an alternative approach using a systematic analysis to define a probability distribution for the errors. Our matching strategy then matches the most probable points first, thereby reducing the ambiguity for the remaining matches. We demonstrate this algorithms with several examples. 相似文献

Recent experiments have shown that stereo depth is given by fusion of illusory ('cognitive') contours. They occur across quite large gaps in figures, when these gaps are unlikely and form the shape of a probable (nearer) masking object or masking feature. Implications are that: (a) clearly defined contours and regions of brightness difference can be produced as postulates from sensory evidence, which may be surprising absence of stimulation; (b) each eye-system can derive its own postulates, or hypotheses, which (c) can be combined to give stereo vision. It has been shown that random-dot stereo depth does not occur when there is colour contrast but no brightness difference between the dots and their background. This we have confirmed by using a new technique for producing isoluminant pictures, of any complexity, with exact registration for any two colours. With this technique, we find large displacements of narrow borders bounding regions that are shifted across isoluminance. These displacements, which are clearly seen as movements, occur with or without colour differences. The direction of shift depends on whether the narrow border is light or dark. It is found that these dramatic shifts do not - when produced in opposite directions to the two eyes and fused - produce stereo depth. It is concluded, following Julesz's paradigm, that these contour displacements have their neural orgin not retinally, but after stereo fusion. Kandinsky proposed a correspondence theory that suggests associations between specific colors and shapes (i.e., circle-blue, square-red, triangle-yellow). Makin and Wuerger tested the theory using the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and did not find clear evidence for Kandinsky’s color-shape associations among British participants. In the present study, we first replicated the previous study among Japanese participants and found similar results to those of Makin and Wuerger, showing little support for Kandinsky’s theory. In the subsequent experiment, we tested another set of color-shape associations that had been revealed by using an explicit matching method (circle-red, square-blue, triangle-yellow) in Japanese participants. The IAT tests showed that response times were significantly faster when circle-red, square-blue, and triangle-yellow combinations were mapped onto the same response key, rather than different key combinations, indicating that these color-shape combinations were encoded. These results provide the first empirical evidence that color-shape associations can be measured by indirect behavioral methods, and in particular, Japanese people’s color-shape associations (circle-red, square-blue, triangle-yellow) can be observed by both direct and indirect experimental methods. 相似文献

Recently Dhar et al. reported the isolation of two new steroidal lactones from the leaves of Datura quercifolia HBK and formulated them as 5α,12α,17α-trihydroxy-1-oxo-6α, 7α-epoxy-22 S-witha-2,24-dienolide and 5α,17α-dihydroxy-1, 12-dioxo-6α,7α-epoxy-22 S-witha-2,24-dienolide on the basis of UV, IR, NMR and MS studies. Further detailed chemical and spectral studies have led to revised structures, namely 5α, 12α-dihydroxy-1-oxo-6α,7α: 24α, 25α-diepoxy-20 S, 22 R-with-2-enolide and 5α-hydroxy-1, 12-dioxo-6α, 7α: 24α, 25α-diepoxy-20 S, 22 R-with-2-enolide, respectively, for the above two compounds. 相似文献
