Reproductive costs of Chaoborus-induced polymorphism in Daphnia pulex   总被引:6,自引:6,他引:0
Although the Chaoborus-induced spined morph of Daphnia pulex survives attacks by Chaoborus over twice as frequently as the typical morph, the spined morph is never found in the absence of Chaoborus. This implies that a disadvantage is associated with the spined morph in the absence of Chaoborus predation. The present study tested the hypothesis that the typical morph has a higher intrinsic rate of increase than the spined morph, by measuring several life history characteristics in controlled laboratory experiments at constant temperature and unlimited food. The results suggest that the spined morph of D. pulex takes longer to reach maturity, is smaller at maturity, but has similar egg number and egg size as the typical morph. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the Chaoborus-induced spined morph is reproductively inferior to the typical morph.  相似文献

A short‐winged morph was recently discovered in the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria. It is different from the normal, long‐winged morph not only in forewing length but also in hind femur length, displaying a dimorphism. To understand the significance of this dimorphism, other morphological characters were compared between the two morphs, and the time of differentiation of wing‐pad length was investigated. Wing weights were heavier in the long‐winged morph than in the short‐winged morph. This result showed that the short‐winged morph is not formed by a failure of wing expansion. No obvious morph‐specific differences were observed in wing venation, but wing allometry studies indicated that the distal areas of the fore‐ and hindwings were disproportionally reduced in the short‐winged morph compared to the long‐winged morph. The morphological differentiation of the wing pad between the two morphs was observed at the penultimate nymphal stage. The flight muscle was well developed in the two morphs, and no sign of flight muscle histolysis was detected in either morph after adult emergence. An analysis of adult body dimensions suggested that the density‐dependent phase shifts known for the long‐winged morph of this locust were also exhibited by the short‐winged morph, demonstrating that these shifts are not specific to the migratory long‐winged morph.  相似文献

Floral traits that increase self-fertilization are expected to spread unless countered by the effects of inbreeding depression, pollen discounting (reduced outcross pollen success by individuals with increased rates of self-fertilization), or both. Few studies have attempted to measure pollen discounting because to do so requires estimating the male outcrossing success of plants that differ in selfing rate. In natural populations of tristylous Eichhornia paniculata, selfing variants of the mid-styled morph are usually absent from populations containing all three style morphs but often predominate in nontrimorphic populations. We used experimental garden populations of genetically marked plants to investigate whether the effects of population morph structure on relative gamete transmission by unmodified (M) and selfing variants (M‘) of the mid-styled morph could explain their observed distribution. Transmission through ovules and self and outcross pollen by plants of the M and M’ morphs were compared under trimorphic, dimorphic (S morph absent), and monomorphic (L and S morphs absent) population structures. Neither population structure nor floral morphology affected female reproductive success, but both had strong effects on the relative transmission of male gametes. The frequency of self-fertilization in the M' morph was consistently higher than that of the M morph under all morph structures, and the frequency of self-fertilization by both morphs increased as morph diversity of experimental populations declined. In trimorphic populations, total transmission by the M and M' morphs did not differ. The small, nonsignificant increase in selfing by the M' relative to the M morph was balanced by decreased outcross siring success, particularly on the S morph. In populations lacking the S morph, male gamete transmission by the M' morph was approximately 1.5 times greater than that by the M morph because of both increased selfing and increased success through outcross pollen donation. Therefore, gamete transmission strongly favored the M' morph only in the absence of the S morph, a result consistent with the distribution of the M' morph in nature. This study indicates that floral traits that alter the selfing rate can have large and context-dependent influences on outcross pollen donation.  相似文献

The flight-capable morph of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, accumulated a substantially greater quantity of total lipid and triglyceride, compared with the obligately flightless morph, during the first five days of adulthood. Increased lipid accumulation in the flight-capable morph was genetically based, and was produced when ovarian growth is substantially reduced in that morph. Temporal changes in lipid levels suggest that the higher triglyceride reserves in the flight-capable morph fed a high-nutrient diet were produced by elevated lipid biosynthesis. By contrast, on a low-nutrient or high carbohydrate diet, increased lipid levels in the flight-capable morph appeared to result primarily from decreased lipid utilization. Increased biosynthesis or retention of triglyceride (the major flight fuel in Gryllus) by the flight-capable morph may significantly divert nutrients from egg production and hence may be an important physiological cause of its reduced ovarian growth. The obligately flightless morph allocated a greater proportion of total lipid to phospholipid than did the flight-capable morph. No functionally-significant differences in total lipid or triglyceride were produced between morphs during the last nymphal stadium. A second flightless morph, derived from the flight-capable morph by histolysis of flight muscles during adulthood, also had reduced amounts of total lipid and triglyceride but increased ovarian growth compared with the flight capable morph on the standard (high-nutrient) diet. Important qualitative and quantitative aspects of lipid metabolism differ genetically between the flight-capable and flightless morphs of G. firmus and likely contribute importantly to their respective adaptations for flight capability vs. reproduction. This is the first study to document genetically-based differences in energy reserves between morphs of a complex (phase, caste, flight) polymorphism in which morphs also differ genetically in key life history traits.  相似文献

In tristylous plant populations, style-morph frequencies are governed by an interaction between frequency-dependent selection due to disassortative mating and stochastic processes. Provided that there are no inherent fitness differences among morphs, frequency-dependent selection should result in equal morph frequencies at equilibrium. Stochastic models indicate that the short-styled morph has the highest and the long-styled morph the lowest probability of being lost from local populations as a result of random processes. We surveyed the morph composition of 82 populations of the tristylous, self-incompatible herb Lythrum salicaria in two archipelagos, one in central and one in northern Sweden, located close to the range-margin of the species. To examine whether deviations from even morph frequencies can be explained by among-morph differences in reproductive success, we quantified flower and seed production in six and three populations in the northern and southern archipelago, respectively, and we recorded segregation ratios in offspring produced in six trimorphic populations in the northern area. Seed germination and offspring growth were studied in the greenhouse. Ninety percent of the populations in the southern archipelago (N = 31) and 69% of the populations in the northern archipelago (N = 35) were trimorphic; the remaining populations were dimorphic (only populations consisting of at least three flowering plants considered). Dimorphic populations were smaller than trimorphic populations, as predicted by stochastic models. There was a striking difference in the morph composition of L. salicaria populations between the two archipelagos. In the southern archipelago, there was a slight excess of the long-styled morph and a corresponding deficiency of the short-styled morph. In contrast, the northern populations were characterized by a marked deficiency of the mid-styled morph: the average frequency of the mid-styled morph in trimorphic populations was 0.21, and nine of eleven dimorphic populations lacked the mid-styled morph. In both archipelagos, the long-styled morph (the most common morph) produced about 20% fewer seeds per fruit than the other morphs. The long-styled morph also tended to produce fewer seeds per plant. A hand-pollination experiment performed in two of the northern populations indicated that seed production per flower was pollen-limited in the long-styled morph but not in the other two morphs. Seed germination and offspring size after 24 weeks of growth did not differ among morphs. The mid-styled morph tended to have a higher representation in the offspring than in the parental generation in all six trimorphic populations studied further indicating that the deficiency of the mid-styled morph in the northern archipelago does not represent an equilibrium. Taken together, the results do not support the hypothesis that morph-specific differences in reproductive success can account for deviations from even morph frequencies in L. salicaria. It is suggested that among-morph differences in other components of fitness and historical factors may contribute to the current morph structure.  相似文献

Telmatochromis temporalis is a cichlid fish endemic to Lake Tanganyika. Two morphs of this species, normal and dwarf, form a good model for the study of ecological speciation through divergent natural selection on body size. This study reports a third morph of this species, slender morph, which was collected from deep waters off Kasenga, Zambia, whereas the normal morph inhabits shallow waters of the same locality. This study examined morphological characters and mitochondrial DNA sequences in 18 populations of the three T. temporalis morphs and two closely related species. The slender morph was morphologically similar to the normal and dwarf morphs of the same species, but clearly differed from closely related species. Genetic analyses showed that the slender morph was closest to but significantly different from the parapatric normal morph, suggesting reproductive isolation between them. Due to the lack of colour differences between morphs and of obvious geographical barriers between habitats, reproductive isolation between these morphs may be attributed to ecological factors, rather than sexual or geographical segregation. Further studies examining the evolution of the slender morph may deepen our knowledge of initial stages of speciation, like in the dwarf morph.

Eichhornia paniculata (Pontederiaceae) displays a wide range of outcrossing levels as a result of the dissolution of the tristylous genetic polymorphism and the evolution of semihomostyly. Population surveys, comparison of fitness components of the style morphs, and computer simulations were used to investigate the breakdown of tristyly and the selective mechanisms responsible for the evolution of self-fertilization. Of 110 populations surveyed in northeast Brazil and Jamaica, 53% were trimorphic, 25% were dimorphic, and 22% were monomorphic for style morph. The short (S) morph was underrepresented in trimorphic populations and absent from nontrimorphic populations. The mid (M) morph predominated in dimorphic populations and was the only morph in monomorphic populations. Stamen modifications promoting selfing, associated with semihomostyle evolution, were largely confined to the M morph. They were rare in trimorphic populations, common in dimorphic populations, and often fixed in monomorphic populations. Stochastic simulations and comparisons of fruit set in natural populations indicate that founder events, population bottlenecks, and lowered fertility of the S morph due to an absence of long-tongued pollinators can each account for loss of the S morph from trimorphic populations. A reduced level of disassortative mating can accentuate the rate at which the S morph is lost by both random and deterministic processes. Nontrimorphic populations occur at the geographical margins of the region surveyed and tend to be smaller and less dense than trimorphic populations. These observations and the higher fruit set of the M morph relative to the L morph in dimorphic populations suggest that reproductive assurance, favoring selfing variants of the M morph under conditions of low pollinator service, has been of primary importance in the origin of most monomorphic populations. Where pollinator service is reliable, however, automatic selection of selfing genes, aided by mating asymmetries between the morphs, can cause the M morph to spread to fixation in dimorphic populations.  相似文献

Heterodichogamy is defined as the presence of two flower morphs that exhibit male and female functions at different times among individuals within a population, and is regarded as an adaptation to promote outbreeding through enhanced intermorph pollination. In highly fragmented populations in which the morph frequency is biased, heterodichogamy may hamper population growth by reducing seed sets of the more numerous morph, and enhancing seed sets of the less numerous morph. In such situations, we hypothesize that individual plants experience greater seed sets if the opposite sexual morphs are nearby, and that individuals of a less numerous sexual morph have greater seed sets. After confirming heterodichogamy by observing flowering behavior and phenology, we tested these two hypotheses in a highly fragmented population of Machilus thunbergii, a putative heterodichogamous evergreen laurel tree. Our observations confirmed that M. thunbergii is heterodichogamous, consisting of two types of protogynous and bisexual flowers: a morning female (MF)–afternoon male morph and a morning male (MM)–afternoon female morph at the individual level. Sexual expression of the two morphs was highly synchronized and reciprocal. Investigation of seed‐set rates revealed greater rates of both morphs if the opposite morph was nearby. The less numerous sexual morph (MF) showed a greater seed‐set rate than the more numerous sexual morph (MM).  相似文献

The comma butterfly, Polygonia c-album, exhibits seasonal polyphenism with a darkish winter morph and a lighter summer one. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the winter morph represents the ancestral condition. We suggest two hypotheses for the evolution of the summer morph and the maintenance of seasonal polyphenism in the comma: (1) that the summer morph is better protected against predation on summer roost sites, whereas the winter morph is better protected on hibernation sites, and (2) that the summer morph is energetically less expensive and results from deallocation of resources from soma (e.g. dark wing pigmentation) to reproduction. We tested the antipredation hypothesis in experiments using great tits, Parus major, as predators on winter and summer morph commas presented simultaneously on tree trunks or on nettles. However, this hypothesis was not supported as the winter morph was better protected than the summer morph on both backgrounds. Predation when both morphs were present was lower on nettles, and summer morphs placed in exposed positions on tree trunks outdoors disappeared sooner than winter morphs placed on the same background. In addition, in a final experiment, 18 summer morphs released in their natural habitat in the evening exclusively chose leaves for roost sites, whereas 12 of 19 winter morphs chose a tree trunk, branch or twig. We conclude that evolution of the summer morph is consistent with the life history hypothesis and that its choice of summer roost sites is associated with a low predation pressure.  相似文献

Abstract Under a semi-natural setting the between-morph pollen exchange patterns were studied in distylous Primula sieboldii flowers by measuring pollen removal from the anthers on a single visit by a Bombus diversus tersatus queen, and stigmatic pollen deposition along the sequence of the visitation of the opposite-morph flowers by the bee. Despite the twofold larger number of pollen grains produced in a single flower of the long-styled morph compared to that of the short-styled morph, no significant difference in pollen removal from a flower was found between the morphs. The stigmas of the long-styled morph received significantly more opposite-morph pollen grains than those of the short-styled morph on a single visit by the bee. Sufficient legitimate pollen grains, surpassing the ovule number, were loaded on the stigmas of 27% and 17% of visited flowers of the long- and short-styled morphs, respectively. The short-styled morph could more efficiently donate pollen to the opposite morph stigmas than the long-styled morph.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Environmental cues affecting seasonal morph determination of the pierid butterfly Eurema hecabe L. were examined in laboratory experiments and in the field. A sexual difference exists in the photoperiodic response for seasonal morph determination: in short days at 25C the proportion of the autumn morph is higher in females than in males, and as the rearing temperature is decreased the proportion of autumn morphs increases in both sexes. A 5C drop in temperature during the final larval stadium induces 100% autumn morph production in short-day animals. This increase in autumn morph production induced by temperature decrease explains the seasonal morph change of this butterfly occurring in early autumn in the field. The role of this sex-linked photoperiodic response is discussed as a seasonal strategy of reproduction.  相似文献

British populations of Senecio vulgaris frequently contain two common capitulum morphs (radiate and non-radiate) and one rare intermediate morph. The radiate morph shows a higher maternal rate of intermorph outcrossing than the non-radiate morph and due to the ‘cost of outcrossing’ should decline in frequency, ultimately to be lost from a population. To determine whether the radiate morph exhibits some inherent advantage in fitness to offset the ‘cost of outcrossing’, a comparison was made of the survivorship and fecundity of the radiate and non-radiate morphs raised in pure stands and 1 : 1 mixture at three planting dates (autumn 1983, and spring and autumn 1984). Plants in stands established in spring 1984 were harvested in late August 1984, while plants in stands established in autumn overwintered before being harvested the following summer. In spring planted stands, the two morphs exhibited equivalent survivorships, while the fecundity of the non-radiate morph tended to be greater than the radiate morph. In autumn planted stands, survivorship and Net Reproductive Output (survivorship × fecundity) of the non-radiate morph was greater than that of the radiate morph in mixture, and also in pure stands established in 1983. In no instance was the Net Reproductive Output of either morph significantly greater in mixture than in pure stand. Density had a contrasting effect on morph survivorship and fecundity in the spring and autumn 1984 planted stands. Whereas, in spring stands, fecundity was subject to compensating density dependent regulation while survivorship was density independent, the opposite trend was observed in autumn planted stands. It is concluded that under the conditions of the experiments, the radiate morph exhibited no fitness advantage which might offset the inherent disadvantage it suffers in natural polymorphic populations due to the ‘cost of outcrossing’.  相似文献

Correlations between phenotypic traits are common in many organisms, but the relative importance of nonadaptive mechanisms and selection for the evolution and maintenance of such correlations are poorly understood. In polymorphic species, morphs may evolve quantitative differences in additional characters as a result of morph‐specific selection. The perennial rosette herb Primula farinosa is polymorphic for scape length. The short‐scaped morph is less damaged by grazers and seed predators but is more strongly pollen limited than the long‐scaped morph. We examined whether morph‐specific differences in biotic interactions are associated with differences in selection on two other traits affecting floral display (number of flowers and petal size) and on one trait likely to affect pollination efficiency (corolla tube width) in three P. farinosa populations. Differences in selection between morphs were detected in one population. In this population, selection for more flowers and larger petals was stronger in the short‐scaped than in the long‐scaped morph, and although there was selection for narrower corolla tubes in the short‐scaped morph, no statistically significant selection on corolla tube width could be detected in the long‐scaped morph. In the study populations, the short‐scaped morph produced more and larger flowers and wider corolla tubes. Current morph‐specific selection was thus only partly consistent with trait differences between morphs. The results provide evidence of morph‐specific selection on traits associated with floral display and pollination efficiency, respectively.  相似文献

Summary Byttneria aculeata (Sterculiaceae), a subcanopy liane with a shrubby juvenile form has two distinct leaf color morphs in juvenile plants- a given juvenile has plain green leaves or leaves with whitish variegation. Both forms occur together in the forest and in clearings; however, the variegated morph is more common in open sites, and the plain morph predominates in the forest. Percent variegation per leaf for variegated plants increased from closed to open sites. Measurements of growth support the idea that variegation is favored in open habitats. Within a given habitat, rate of herbivory by leaf miners on a given morph increases with increasing relative frequency of that morph; however, at a given relative frequency, the variegated morph is less heavily attacked than is the plain morph when it occurs elsewhere at that same frequency.  相似文献

Seed bank in annuals: competition between banker and non-banker morphs   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Seed bank is a plant life history strategy against the unpredictability of the biotic and the abiotic environment. We simulated competition between a seed banking and a non-banking morph of an annual plant. A constant fraction of the banker morph seeds was allocated to the seed bank, where they had a constant mortality and germination rate. All surviving seeds of the non-banker morph germinated in the next generation. The seedlings of both morphs experienced similar density-dependent mortality. Whether one of the morphs wins or the morphs coexist was evaluated from parameter space plots and statistically with logistic regression analysis. All parameters of the model had a significant, nonlinear effect on the persistence of the morphs, supporting our approach of numerically covering a wide range of parameter values. The seed production of a focal morph increased its survival and decreased the survival of the other morph. Otherwise, the morphs showed opposite response to changes in the model parameters. The banker morph was usually the winning strategy when it had a higher seed production than the non-banker morph. The banker morph benefitted from high germination probability, while the non-banker benefitted from high allocation to seed bank and high seed mortality. The coexistence of the morphs was inhibited by high banker morph seed production and seed mortality and promoted by high values of all other parameters. The system showed complex dynamics when banking was the winning strategy or the morphs coexisted. In addition, a part of the parameter space where the non-banker morph wins showed complex dynamics. Our results suggest that seed banking is a beneficial strategy if seed number is increased consequently, e.g. due to a decreased seed size. If banking decreases seed number, the non-banker morph wins or the two morphs coexist.  相似文献

Drosophila elegans is a flower-breeding species occurring in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. Two morphs, brown and black, are known in this species. The brown morph is recorded from southern China, Philippines, Indonesia and New Guinea, while the black morph is from the Okinawa islands and Taiwan. The present crossing experiment suggests that the difference of body colour between them was due to alleles on a single locus or closely linked loci on an autosome; F1 hybrids exhibited intermediate body colour. Female choice tests revealed asymmetrical premating isolation between the brown and black morphs; isolation indices ranged from 0.55 to 0.83 in the tests using females of the black morph (deviation from random mating was significant), but from — 0.03 to 0.50 in the tests using females of the brown morph (deviation from random mating was insignificant). However, body colour was not used as a criterion of mate choice by females. A weak and asymmetrical postmating isolation was also observed between the brown and black morphs; viability was lowered in F2 progenies of crosses between females of the brown morph and males of the black morph. No premating or postmating isolation was observed between geographic strains of each morph. Under irradiation, body temperature was higher in the black morph than in the brown morph. On the other hand, no significant difference was observed in tolerance to cold, heat and desiccation between the brown and black morphs.  相似文献

In animal‐pollinated plants, both the spatial distribution of flowering individuals and the number of flowers that an individual displays affect pollen deposition rates and female reproductive success. Heterostylous species are likely to be particularly sensitive to the contingencies of spatial distribution, as they are reproductively subdivided into distinct mating groups, which usually exhibit self‐ and intra‐morph incompatibility and differ in floral morphology. In this paper, we explore the joint effects of both spatial distribution of potential mates and floral display size on morph‐specific pollen deposition rates and seed set patterns in two natural populations of Pulmonaria officinalis, a distylous species with a weak self‐incompatibility system. Both total stigmatic pollen load and the proportion of legitimate pollen decreased with increasing spatial isolation. Legitimate (intermorph) pollen transfer was, however, asymmetric and decreased more rapidly with decreasing proximity to a compatible legitimate mating partner in the S‐morph than in the L‐morph. Total stigmatic pollen loads per flower increased with increasing floral display size, indicating that large plants are disproportionately more visited than smaller individuals. However, because legitimate pollen deposition decreased with increasing floral display size, these results also suggest that larger numbers of flowers increase the degree of geitonogamous pollination. In both the L‐ and S‐morph, seed set significantly decreased with increasing isolation from a legitimate mating partner, but in the L‐morph seed set was less dependent on the spatial distribution of the S‐morph. In addition, seed set significantly increased with floral display size in the L‐morph, but not in the S‐morph. These findings indicate that the spatial distribution of potential mates and variation in floral display size may cause morph‐specific differences in pollen deposition rates and female reproductive success.  相似文献

Reproduction is a key factor for the successful establishment and spread of introduced species. Oxalis pes‐caprae is a tristylous species with a self‐ and morph‐incompatibility sexual system that, in the invaded range of the western Mediterranean Basin, has been found to reproduce asexually because only the pentaploid, short‐styled morph (5x S‐morph) was introduced. The objective of this study was to test the ability of the 5x S‐morph of O. pes‐caprae to produce viable offspring in the absence of compatible mates, exploring the hypothesis that new morphs could have emerged by sexual reproduction events of the initially introduced morph. Pollen germination, pollen tube development, fruit and seed production, seed germination and offspring ploidy levels were analysed after controlled hand‐pollinations to assess self‐ and morph‐incompatibility and production of viable gametes by the 5x S‐morph. The self‐incompatibility system is still operating, but a partial breakdown in the morph‐incompatibility system combined with the production of viable gametes was observed, allowing sexual reproduction of the 5x S‐morph in the invaded range. The ability of the 5x S‐morph to reproduce sexually may have major consequences for the dynamics of invasive populations of O. pes‐caprae and could be one of the factors involved in the occurrence of new floral morphs in this invaded range.  相似文献

I examined the evolutionary factors maintaining two environmentally induced morphs in ponds of variable duration. Larvae of New Mexico spadefoot toads (Scaphiopus multiplicatus) often occur in the same pond as a large, rapidly developing carnivorous morph and as a smaller, more slowly developing omnivorous morph. Previous studies revealed that carnivores can be induced by feeding tadpoles live fairy shrimp and that morph determination is reversible. Field and laboratory experiments indicated that the ability of an individual to become a carnivore or an omnivore is maintained evolutionarily as a response to variability in pond longevity and food abundance. Carnivores survived better in highly ephemeral artificial ponds, because they developed faster. Omnivores survived better in longer-duration artificial ponds, because their larger fat reserves enhanced postmetamorphic survival. The two morphs also occupy different trophic niches. Experimental manipulations of morph frequency in ponds of intermediate duration revealed that increased competition for food among individuals of the more common morph made the rarer form more successful. Morph frequency within each pond was stabilized at an equilibrium by frequency-dependent morph reversal, which reflected frequency-dependent natural selection on size at metamorphosis: larger metamorphs had higher survival, and individuals reared at a frequency above the pond's equilibrium frequency were smaller at metamorphosis than were individuals of that morph reared at a frequency below the pond's equilibrium. Because neighboring ponds often differed in pond longevity and food abundance, each pond possessed a unique equilibrium morph frequency. This implies that morph determination in Scaphiopus is a locally adjusted evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS).  相似文献
