A field experiment was conducted in 2019 (minor season) and 2020 (major season) to study soil properties and net income response to inorganic NPK fertilizer and biochar application for maize production. The experiment was made up of 2 × 3 factorial combinations of biochar (0 kg ha?1, 2000 kg ha?1) and inorganic NPK fertilizer (0:0:0 kg NPK ha?1, recommended rate; 90:60:60 kg N: P:K ha?1, half of recommended rate; 45:30:30 kg N:P:K ha?1). In both seasons, biochar and inorganic NPK fertilizer applied separately or in combination improved soil properties (dehydrogenase activity, CEC, organic carbon, bacterial and fungal population, microbial biomass carbon and basal respiration rates) and yield significantly. In 2019, however, mineral N and available P did not increase in biochar amended plots. Significant interaction effect was observed between biochar and NPK fertilizer application which could be related to positive soil conditioning of biochar and biochar surface charges which enhanced retention and steady release of nutrient supplied by NPK fertilizer for maize use. Maize grain yield and profit in both crop seasons increased significantly and followed an increasing order of control < sole biochar < NPK (half rate) < NPK (full rate) < combined biochar + NPK (full rate) = combined biochar + NPK (half rate). Farmers in this agro ecological zone are encouraged to apply biochar + inorganic NPK fertilizer (45:30:30) due to its low total production cost, improved maize grain yield and high net income compared to the full rate (90:60:60) or full rate + biochar.  相似文献

Present nutrient management recommendations for irrigated rice in West Africa are typically uniform for large regions. Even with optimal crop management, spatial variability of indigenous nutrient supplies may cause low fertilizer efficiency, low productivity of expensive inputs and high losses to the environment. Substantial efficiency increases were achieved with site- and season-specific nutrient management approaches, but the relative importance of different components (site or season) or of the precision level used (field, scheme, or region) remained unclear. We conducted a field trial in the Senegal River valley to investigate short-range variability of indigenous nutrient supplies of N (INS), P (IPS), and K (IKS) on a three hectare farm, and subsequently used the field data and simulation tools to study the agro-economic effects of fertilizer management options with different precision levels.Spatial variability of soil characteristics and of indigenous nutrient supplies (IS) at field level was high and covered a large part of the variability reported in regional studies. INS ranged from 19 to 78 kg N ha–1, IPS ranged from 11 to 39 kg P ha– 1, and IKS ranged from 70 to 150 kg K ha–1. Rice yield ranged from 2.2 to 6.0 Mg ha–1 in N omission plots, from 4.1 to 9.8 Mg ha–1 in P omission plots, and from 5.3 to 9.6 Mg ha–1 in K omission plots. The highest yield in the fully fertilized treatment was 11.6 Mg ha–1. Simulated potential yield was 11.8 Mg ha–1. Field-specific fertilizer management and an economically optimal target yield resulted in an average yield of 9.6 Mg ha–1 compared to 7.5 Mg ha–1 for the existing uniform recommendation. Net benefit from fertilizer use dropped by 19% as a result of reduced precision. Non-season-specific recommendations accounted for 12% of net benefit loss, whereas lower spatial precision contributed 7% to the net benefit loss. We concluded that uniform domain-specific recommendations within agro-ecological zones (i.e. adjusted to the seasonal yield potential) modified by crop diagnostics offer the best opportunities to optimize fertilizer efficiency and net benefits of fertilizer use for intensive irrigated rice-based systems in West Africa.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to assess the benefit and compare the functioning of AM fungi on wheat grown conventionally and on beds. Ten treatment combinations were used, treatments 1 and 2: no fertilizers with and without arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (In vitro produced Glomus intraradices); 3:100% of recommended NPK: (120 kg ha−1 N; 60 kg ha−1 P; 50 kg ha−1 K), and 4 and 5: 75% of recommended NPK dose with and without AM inoculation in a 5 × 2 split-plot design on wheat using conventional/flat system and elevated/raised bed system. The maximum grain yield (3.84 t ha−1) was obtained in AM fungi inoculated plots of raised bed system applied with 75% NPK and was found higher (although non- significant) than the conventional (3.73 t ha−1) system. The AM inoculation at 75% fertilizer application can save 8.47, 5.38 kg P and 16.95, 10.75 kg N ha−1, respectively, in bed and conventional system. While comparing the yield response with 100% fertilizer application alone, AM inoculation was found to save 20.30, 15.79 kg P and 40.60, 31.59 kg N ha−1, respectively, in beds and conventional system. Mycorrhizal inoculation at 75% NPK application particularly in raised bed system seems to be more efficient in saving fertilizer inputs and utilizing P for producing higher yield and growth unlike non-mycorrhizal plants of 100% P. Besides the yield, mycorrhizal plants grown on beds had higher AM root colonization, soil dehydrogenases activity, and P-uptake. The present study indicates that the inoculation of AM fungi to wheat under raised beds is better response (although non-significantly higher) to conventional system and could be adopted for achieving higher yield of wheat at reduced fertilizer inputs after field validation.  相似文献

Long-term manure application is recognized as an efficient management practice to enhance soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation and nitrogen (N) mineralization capacity. A field study was established in 1979 to understand the impact of long-term manure and/or chemical fertilizer application on soil fertility in a continuous maize cropping system. Soil samples were collected from field plots in 2012 from 9 fertilization treatments (M0CK, M0N, M0NPK, M30CK, M30N, M30NPK, M60CK, M60N, and M60NPK) where M0, M30, and M60 refer to manure applied at rates of 0, 30, and 60 t ha−1 yr−1, respectively; CK indicates no fertilizer; N and NPK refer to chemical fertilizer in the forms of either N or N plus phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Soils were separated into three particle-size fractions (2000–250, 250–53, and <53 μm) by dry- and wet-sieving. A laboratory incubation study of these separated particle-size fractions was used to evaluate the effect of long-term manure, in combination with/without chemical fertilization application, on the accumulation and mineralization of SOC and total N in each fraction. Results showed that long-term manure application significantly increased SOC and total N content and enhanced C and N mineralization in the three particle-size fractions. The content of SOC and total N followed the order 2000–250 μm > 250–53μm > 53 μm fraction, whereas the amount of C and N mineralization followed the reverse order. In the <53 μm fraction, the M60NPK treatment significantly increased the amount of C and N mineralized (7.0 and 10.1 times, respectively) compared to the M0CK treatment. Long-term manure application, especially when combined with chemical fertilizers, resulted in increased soil microbial biomass C and N, and a decreased microbial metabolic quotient. Consequently, long-term manure fertilization was beneficial to both soil C and N turnover and microbial activity, and had significant effect on the microbial metabolic quotient.  相似文献

The responses of litter decomposition to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) additions were examined in an old-growth tropical forest in southern China to test the following hypotheses: (1) N addition would decrease litter decomposition; (2) P addition would increase litter decomposition, and (3) P addition would mitigate the inhibitive effect of N addition. Two kinds of leaf litter, Schima superba Chardn. & Champ. (S.S.) and Castanopsis chinensis Hance (C.C.), were studied using the litterbag technique. Four treatments were conducted at the following levels: control, N-addition (150 kg N ha−1 yr−1), P-addition (150 kg P ha−1 yr−1) and NP-addition (150 kg N ha−1 yr−1 plus 150 kg P ha−1 yr−1). While N addition significantly decreased the decomposition of both litters, P addition significantly inhibited decomposition of C.C., but did not affect the decomposition of S.S. The negative effect of N addition on litter decomposition might be related to the high N-saturation in this old-growth tropical forest; however, the negative effect of P addition might be due to the suppression of “microbial P mining”. Significant interaction between N and P addition was found on litter decomposition, which was reflected by the less negative effect in NP-addition plots than those in N-addition plots. Our results suggest that P addition may also have negative effect on litter decomposition and that P addition would mitigate the negative effect of N deposition on litter decomposition in tropical forests.  相似文献

It is important to understand switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) productivity with relation to diverse nutrient deficiency conditions in order to optimize continuous biomass production in marginal lands. This study was conducted on a wasteland sandy soil (Aridosol) to assess biomass yield, nutrient uptake and nitrogen (N) recovery of switchgrass, and soil nitrate-N (NO3?-N) accumulation responses to N (120 kg N ha?1), phosphorus (P, 100 kg P2O5 ha?1), and potassium (K, 45 kg K2O ha?1) applications during 2015 and 2016 in Inner Mongolia, China. The experiment layout was a randomized complete block design with fertilizer mixture treatments of N, P, and K (NPK), P and K (PK), N and K (NK), N and P (NP), and a control with no fertilizer input (CK). Plant height and stem diameter remained unaffected by the different fertilizer treatments. Biomass yield with the NPK treatment in 2015 was 8.9 Mg ha?1 and in 2016 it was 7.3 Mg ha?1. In 2015, compared with the NPK treatment, a significant yield reduction of 33.7% was found with PK, 22.5% with NK, 28.1% with NP, and 40.5% with CK; however, in 2016, yield declined significantly only with CK compared to the rest of the fertilizer treatments, for which yields were statistically similar. Plant N content was reduced for the treatment PK (i.e. N omission); conversely, plant P and K content remained unaffected with P and K omission treatments. Plant nutrient uptake, particularly of N and K, was severely decreased by the nutrient omission treatments when averaged across 2 years. Apparent N recovery (ANR; quantity of N uptake per unit of N applied) was reduced for the NP and NK treatments, which led to an increase in soil NO3?-N accumulation in the top 0–20 cm layer, compared with the NPK treatment. However, ANR was the highest (37.2% in 2015) with the NPK treatment, which also reduced soil NO3?-N accumulation. A balanced N, P, and K fertilizer management approach is suggested to sustain switchgrass yield and stand persistence on semiarid, marginal, sandy wasteland.  相似文献

Dynamics of cropland soil organic carbon (SOC) in response to different management practices and environmental conditions across North China Plain (NCP) were studied using a modeling approach. We identified the key variables driving SOC changes at a high spatial resolution (10 km×10 km) and long time scale (90 years). The model used future climatic data from the FGOALS model based on four future greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration scenarios. Agricultural practices included different rates of nitrogen (N) fertilization, manure application, and stubble retention. We found that SOC change was significantly influenced by the management practices of stubble retention (linearly positive), manure application (linearly positive) and nitrogen fertilization (nonlinearly positive) – and the edaphic variable of initial SOC content (linearly negative). Temperature had weakly positive effects, while precipitation had negligible impacts on SOC dynamics under current irrigation management. The effects of increased N fertilization on SOC changes were most significant between the rates of 0 and 300 kg ha−1 yr−1. With a moderate rate of manure application (i.e., 2000 kg ha−1 yr−1), stubble retention (i.e., 50%), and an optimal rate of nitrogen fertilization (i.e., 300 kg ha−1 yr−1), more than 60% of the study area showed an increase in SOC, and the average SOC density across NCP was relatively steady during the study period. If the rates of manure application and stubble retention doubled (i.e., manure application rate of 4000 kg ha−1 yr−1 and stubble retention rate of 100%), soils across more than 90% of the study area would act as a net C sink, and the average SOC density kept increasing from 40 Mg ha−1 during 2010s to the current worldwide average of ∼55 Mg ha−1 during 2060s. The results can help target agricultural management practices for effectively mitigating climate change through soil C sequestration.  相似文献

In phosphorus deficient soils and under smallscale farming systems, the development of efficient management strategies for P fertilizers is crucial to sustain food production. A field experiment was conducted on a P-fixing Acrisol in western Kenya to study possibilities of replenishing soil P with seasonal additions of small rates of P fertilizers. Triple superphosphate was applied at 0, 10, 25, 50 and 150 kg P ha–1 for 5 consecutive maize growing seasons followed by 4 seasons of residual crops. Maize yields and soil P fractions were determined. Although maize responded to additions of 10 kg P ha–1 with a cumulative grain yield of 16.8 Mg ha–1, at the end of the experiment, compared to 8.8 Mg ha–1 in the non-P fertilized plots, soil labile P did not increase correspondingly. Seasonal additions of 150 kg P ha–1 increased maize yields to a cumulative value of 39 Mg ha–1 at the end of the experiment, and increased all soil inorganic P fractions. At the third season of residual phase, treatment with a cumulative addition of 750 kg P ha–1 gave the highest yields compared to treatments in the same residual stage, but these yields were considered less than the maximum yield of the season. This indicates that the large build up of soil P was not available for crop uptake. The inorganic P fraction extracted by NaHCO3 was the most affected by changes in management, increasing during the input phase and decreasing after interruption of P addition, for all P rates. The decrease in this pool during the residual phase could be explained by the maize uptake. This study showed that seasonal additions of 25 kg P ha–1 can increase maize yield with gradual replenishment of soil P.  相似文献

Understanding the time-course of dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) accumulation in terms of yield–trait relationships is essential to simultaneously increase grain yield and synchronize N demand and N supply. We collected 413 data points from 11 field experiments to address patterns of DM and N accumulation with time in relation to grain yield and management of winter wheat in China. Detailed growth analysis was conducted at the Zadok growth stages (GS) 25 (regreening), GS30 (stem elongation), GS60 (anthesis), and GS100 (maturity) in all experiments, including DM and N accumulation. Grain yield averaged 7.3 Mg ha−1, ranging from 2.1 to 11.2 Mg ha−1. The percent N accumulation was consistent prior to DM accumulation, while both DM and N accumulation increased continuously with growing time. Both the highest and fastest DM and N accumulations were observed from stem elongation to the anthesis stage. Significant correlations between grain yield and DM and N accumulation were found at each of the four growth stages, although no positive relationship was observed between grain yield and harvest index or N harvest index. The yield increase from 7–9 Mg ha−1 to >9 Mg ha−1 was mainly attributed to increased DM and N accumulation from stem elongation to anthesis. Although applying more N fertilizer increased N accumulation during this stage, DM accumulation was not improved, indicating that N fertilizer management and related agronomic management should be intensified synchronously across the wheat growing season to simultaneously achieve high yields and match N demand and N supply.  相似文献

Although the West-African moist savanna zone has a high potential for crop production, yields on farmers' fields are, on average, far below this potential, mainly due to the low use of external sources of nutrients. Since the mid-1990s, it has become clear that in order to upgrade crop production to levels needed to sustain the growing population without further degrading the soil resource base, inorganic fertilizers are required. Due to the physico-chemical nature of these soils and the relatively high cost of inorganic fertilizers, a general consensus exists in the research and development community that these inorganic inputs need to be complemented with organic matter. Here, we explore options to produce organic matter in-situ and evaluate the impact of combining inorganic and organic sources of N on maize yields, focusing on the densely populated derived savanna (DS) benchmark of Benin Republic. Although most of the farmers (93%) in this benchmark use inorganic fertilizer, applications rates are low (on average, 27 kg N ha–1). A significant response to N was observed for 96% of the studied farmers' fields.Grain and herbaceous legumes were observed to produce between 383 and 8700 kg dry matter ha–1 in the benchmark area. Inoculation with Rhizobia and inorganic P additions were shown to significantly improve biomass production on sites with low contents of Rhizobia and P. Although maize grain yield was observed to increase significantly following a legume compared with following a maize crop or natural fallow, these increases were insufficient in the case of a cowpea crop or were obtained at the cost of leaving the field `idle' for a whole year in the case of a herbaceous Mucuna fallow. Topping up a cowpea haulms equivalent of 45 kg N ha–1 with 45 kg urea–N ha–1 was shown to give maize yields similar to the yields obtained after applying 90 kg urea–N ha–1 on the poorest fields. Moreover, on these fields, a positive interaction between cowpea–N and urea–N sources of 200 kg grain ha–1 was observed. On the richest fields, the effects of applied organic matter and fertilizer were additive.Agroforestry systems are alternative cropping systems that produce organic matter in-situ. As tree roots go down below the rooting depth of food crops, sub-soil fertility was observed to influence tree biomass production. Yield increases in tree-crop intercrop systems – such as alley cropping – in the absence of inorganic inputs are often reduced by the occurrence of tree-crop competition. In cut-and-carry systems, where tree prunings are harvested from a field adjacent to the crop land, increases in maize grain yield caused by addition of those prunings were observed to be on the low side. Mixing these residues with urea, however, was shown to lead to added benefits of about 500 kg grains ha–1, relative to the treatments with sole inputs of organic matter or urea. Although residue quality was shown to affect maize N uptake in a pot trial, its impact under field conditions was minimal for the range of considered residue qualities. In an alley cropping trial, maize yield was shown to be sustained on a non-degraded site and enhanced on a degraded site, when a minimal amount of mineral fertilizer was added with the prunings, whereas fertilizer application alone failed to do so in both cases.  相似文献

Large areas of African moist forests are being logged in the context of supposedly sustainable management plans. It remains however controversial whether harvesting a few trees per hectare can be maintained in the long term while preserving other forest services as well. We used a unique 24 year silvicultural experiment, encompassing 10 4 ha plots established in the Central African Republic, to assess the effect of disturbance linked to logging (two to nine trees ha−1 greater than or equal to 80 cm DBH) and thinning (11–41 trees ha−1 greater than or equal to 50 cm DBH) on the structure and dynamics of the forest. Before silvicultural treatments, above-ground biomass (AGB) and timber stock (i.e. the volume of commercial trees greater than or equal to 80 cm DBH) in the plots amounted 374.5 ± 58.2 Mg ha−1 and 79.7 ± 45.9 m3 ha−1, respectively. We found that (i) natural control forest was increasing in AGB (2.58 ± 1.73 Mg dry mass ha−1 yr−1) and decreasing in timber stock (−0.33 ± 1.57 m3 ha−1 yr−1); (ii) the AGB recovered very quickly after logging and thinning, at a rate proportional to the disturbance intensity (mean recovery after 24 years: 144%). Compared with controls, the gain almost doubled in the logged plots (4.82 ± 1.22 Mg ha−1 yr−1) and tripled in the logged + thinned plots (8.03 ± 1.41 Mg ha−1 yr−1); (iii) the timber stock recovered slowly (mean recovery after 24 years: 41%), at a rate of 0.75 ± 0.51 m3 ha−1 yr−1 in the logged plots, and 0.81 ± 0.74 m3 ha−1 yr−1 in the logged + thinned plots. Although thinning significantly increased the gain in biomass, it had no effect on the gain in timber stock. However, thinning did foster the growth and survival of small- and medium-sized timber trees and should have a positive effect over the next felling cycle.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) has been gradually depleted from West African soils and now poses serious threats to food production. Many ways of increasing N supply (e.g. judicious use of inorganic fertilizers and nitrogen-fixing plants) have been tried in West African farming systems. Herbaceous and woody legumes commonly contribute 40–70 kg N ha–1 season. This represents about 30% of the total N applied as residues. Nevertheless and despite repeated demonstrations of the usefulness of green manures in enhancing soil fertility, their practices and adoption are still limited. Promiscuous soyabeans are being used to develop sustainable cropping systems in the moist savannah. Reliable estimates of N2 fixed by soyabeans and their residual N benefits to subsequent cereal crops in the savannah zone of southern Guinea have only infrequently been made. The actual amounts measured varied between 38 and 126 kg N ha–1 assuming that only seeds of soyabeans are removed from the plots, the net N accrual of soil nitrogen ranges between minus 8 kg N ha–1 and plus 47 kg N ha–1 depending on the soyabean cultivar. Residual soyabean N values of 10–24 kg N ha–1 (14–36% of the total N in maize) were obtained in a soyabean-maize rotation. Although cereal yields following legume cultivation have been attributed to greater N accumulation, our data show that the relative increase in maize N was smaller than the relative increase in dry-matter yield. Hence, the increased yields of maize following soybeans are not entirely due to the carry-over of N from soyabean residues (as well as to conservation of soil N) but to other rotational effects as well. It is thus clear that the Nbenefit of grain legumes to non-legumes is small compared to the level of N fertilizer use in more intensive cereal production systems but is nevertheless significant in the context of the low amounts of input in subsistence farming.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) fertilization potentially affects soil N mineralization and leaching, and can enhance NH3 volatilization, thus impacting crop production. A fertilizer experiment with five levels of N addition (0, 79, 147, 215 and 375 kg N ha-1) was performed in 2009 and 2010 in a maize field in Huanghuaihai region, China, where > 300 kg N ha-1 has been routinely applied to soil during maize growth period of 120 days. Responses of net N mineralization, inorganic N flux (0–10cm), NH3 volatilization, and maize yield to N fertilization were measured. During the growth period, net N mineralization and nitrification varied seasonally, with higher rates occurring in August and coinciding with the R1 stage of maize growth. Soil NO3 -N contributed to more than 60% of inorganic N flux during maize growth. Cumulative NH3 volatilization increased with N additions, with total NH3 volatilization during maize growth accounting for about 4% of added N. Relative to the control, mean maize yield in the fertilizer treatments increased by 17% and 20% in 2009 and 2010, respectively. However, grain yield, aboveground biomass, and plant N accumulation did not increase with added N at levels > 215 kg N ha-1. These results suggest that the current N rate of 300 kg N ha-1 is not only excessive, but also reduces fertilizer efficacy and may contribute to environmental problems such as global warming and eutrophication of ground water and streams.  相似文献

Legume cover crops are a potential means for overcoming N depletion in the derived savanna of West Africa. A 3-year trial was, therefore, conducted near Ibadan, southwestern Nigeria to measure the N contribution of 13 legume cover crops as compared to urea –N, using a N fertilizer replacement index for a maize test crop. Two series of trials involved the following legume cover crop species: Aeschynomene histrix, Centrosema brasilianum, Centrosema pascuorum, Chamaecrista rotundifolia, Cajanus cajan, Crotalaria verrucosa, Crotalaria ochroleuca, Lablab purpureus, Mucuna pruriens, Psophocarpus palustris, Pseudovigna argentea, Pueraria phaseoloides and Stylosanthes hamata. Trials were undertaken using a complete block design. Cover crops were planted in 1994 (Series 1) and 1995 (Series 2) in separate sites and each series was subsequently slashed and planted for one season with maize (Zea mays) in 1995 and 1996. At the 50% flowering stage, N concentration of above-ground vegetation of cover crops ranged from 21 to 38 g N kg–1. Nitrogen accumulated by 4.5-month old cover crops ranged from 14 to 240 kg N ha–1, depending on species and year. Cover crops increased grain yield of the subsequent maize crop by 25–136% over the control without N application. Nitrogen uptake by the maize crop was higher following cover crops than after maize or natural grass. The N fertilizer replacement index of cover crops for maize ranged from 11 (A. histrix) to 96 kg N ha–1 (C. cajan) in Series 2. Perennial (C. brasilianum, S. hamata, C. cajan, P. phaseoloides and C. verrucosa) and annual (C. rotundifolia, M. pruriens, C. ochroleuca and L. purpureus) species could potentially save 50 to 100 kg N ha–1 for maize crops. The cover crops accumulated more N in the wetter than in the drier year. However, the N fertilizer replacement index was higher for subsequent maize grown in the drier year. The cover crop-N recovery in maize was also higher than the urea-N uptake in the drier year. The N fertilizer replacement indexes can be predicted using the above-ground biomass amount of cover crops at 20 weeks after planting (drier year) or the N concentration at that stage (wetter year).  相似文献

A field plot experiment was conducted on two types of paddy soils in the Taihu Lake Region of China from June 2000 through 2002 to assess phosphorus (P) losses by runoff and drainage flow and the effectiveness of rice–wheat double cropping on reducing P losses from paddy soils. Commercial NPK compound fertilizer and single superphosphate fertilizer were applied to furnish 0, 30, 150, and 300 kg P ha–1 for rice season trials, and 0, 20, 80, and 160 kg P ha–1 for wheat season trials. The experiments consisted of four replicates (plots of 5 × 6 m in a randomized block design) of each treatment in Argic stagnic anthrosols (Anzhen site) and six replicates in Cumulic stagnic anthrosols (Changshu site). P30 and P20 treatments (30 and 20 kg P ha–1 in rice and wheat seasons, respectively) were considered as conventional P application rates in this area. Higher P treatments, such as P150 and P300 for rice and P80 and P160 for wheat, were intended to simulate the status of soil P in ~10–20 years with an application of P30 or P20 kg P ha–1 each season. Results revealed that the average concentration of total P (TP) in runoff samples was 0.870 mg P l–1 from P30 plots during the rice season, and 0.763 mg P l–1 from P20 plots during the wheat season in both years at the Anzhen site, while it was 0.703 and 1.292 mg P l–1, respectively, at the Changshu site. Average TP load (mass loss) at the Anzhen site with conventional P application rates was 220.9 and 439.5 g P ha–1 during rice season in 2000/2001 and 2001/2002, respectively, but was 382.3 and 709.4g P ha–1 during wheat season, respectively. Mass loss at the Changshu site was 140.4 and 165.7 g P ha–1 during the rice season and 539.1 and 1184.6 g P ha–1 during the wheat season, respectively. P losses from paddy soils were significantly greater during the wheat season, especially at the Changshu site, indicating that planting rice reduced P. Phosphate fertilizer levels significantly affected P concentrations and P loads in runoff both seasons. Both mean concentrations and average seasonal P loads from the P150/P80 plots were lower than that from the P300/P160 plots, but significantly higher than that from the P30/P20 and P0 plots. This implied that runoff P loads would be greatly increased in 10–20 years as a result of the accumulation of soil P if 50 kg P ha–1 (rice season plus wheat season) is applied each year.

Alternative forages can be used to provide valuable home-grown feed for ruminant livestock. Utilising these different forages could affect the manure value and the implications of incorporating these forages into farming systems, needs to be better understood. An experiment tested the hypothesis that applying slurries from ruminants, fed ensiled red clover (Trifolium pratense), lucerne (Medicago sativa) or kale (Brassica oleracea) would improve the yield of hybrid ryegrass (Lolium hybridicum), compared with applying slurries from ruminants fed ensiled hybrid ryegrass, or applying inorganic N alone. Slurries from sheep offered one of four silages were applied to ryegrass plots (at 35 t ha−1) with 100 kg N ha−1 inorganic fertiliser; dry matter (DM) yield was compared to plots only receiving ammonium nitrate at rates of 0, 100 and 250 kg N ha−1 year−1. The DM yield of plots treated with 250 kg N, lucerne or red clover slurry was significantly higher than other treatments (P<0.001). The estimated relative fertiliser N equivalence (FNE) (fertiliser-N needed to produce same yield as slurry N), was greatest for lucerne (114 kg) >red clover (81 kg) >kale (44 kg) >ryegrass (26 kg ha−1 yr−1). These FNE values represent relative efficiencies of 22% (ryegrass), 52% (kale), 47% (red clover) and 60% for lucerne slurry, with the ryegrass slurry efficiency being lowest (P = 0.005). Soil magnesium levels in plots treated with legume slurry were higher than other treatments (P<0.001). Overall, slurries from ruminants fed alternative ensiled forages increased soil nutrient status, forage productivity and better N efficiency than slurries from ruminants fed ryegrass silage. The efficiency of fertiliser use is one of the major factors influencing the sustainability of farming systems, these findings highlight the cascade in benefits from feeding ruminants alternative forages, and the need to ensure their value is effectively captured to reduce environmental risks.  相似文献

Although nitrogen is considered to be the nutrient that most commonly limits production of natural and managed terrestrial ecosystems, I propose that phosphorus may regulate productivity in many continuously cultivated agroecosystems that do not receive applications of synthetic fertilizers. One way P may limit agroecosystem productivity is by controlling nitrogen fixation of legume crops, thus affecting nitrogen availability in the overall agroecosystem. I tested this hypothesis in two studies by examining the effect of phosphorus nutrition on nitrogen fixation of alfalfa in traditional Mexican agroecosystems. All farms used in the research relied on alfalfa as the primary nitrogen source for maize cultivation and other crops, and had minimal or no reliance on synthetic fertilizers. In one study, I used the natural abundance of15N to estimate nitrogen fixation in five alfalfa plots with soils representing a wide range of P fertility. I found a correlation of r = 0.85 between foliage P concentrations and nitrogen fixation in the alfalfa plots. Mean nitrogen fixation in alfalfa plots ranged between 232–555 kg ha–1 yr–1 as estimated by the15N-natural abundance method. In a second study, I sampled soils from alfalfa plots on traditional farms located in 5 different physiographic regions of Mexico. Half of each soil sample was augmented with phosphorus in a greenhouse experiment. I grew alfalfa on the fertilized and unfertilized soils from each site and then determined nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction) of the Rhizobium on the plant roots. Nitrogenase activity increased in the alfalfa grown on all soils with added phosphorus, with two of the five differences being statistically significant at P < 0.01, 0 and one at P < 0.05. Foliage P concentrations and nitrogenase activity were 0 positively correlated (r = 0.81,P < 0.01).0  相似文献

Summary In a udic chromusterts the transformation of an initial application of15N-urea @ 80 kg N ha–1 to rice (Oryza sativa L.) in rice-wheat (R-W) and to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in wheat-rice (W-R) rotations was followed in 6 successive crops in each rotation. All rice crops were grown in irrigated wetland and wheat in irrigated upland conditions. The first wheat crop in W-R rotation utilized 22 kg fertilizer N ha–1 as compared to 19 kg by the corresponding rice crop in R-W rotation. But the latter absorbed more soil N than the former. About 69% of the total N uptake in rice was derived from mineralization of soil organic N as compared to 61% in wheat. The succeeding wheat crop in R-W rotation utilized 6.7% of the residual fertilizer N in the soil but the corresponding rice crop in W-R rotation only 2.2%. The higher utilization appeared to be related to a greater incorporation of labelled fertilizer N in mineral and hexosamine fractions of the soil N. After the second crop in each rotation, the average residual fertilizer N utilization in the next 4 crops ranged between 3 and 4%.The total recovery of15N-urea in all crops amounted to 21.7 and 24.3 kg N ha–1 in R-W and W-R rotation, respectively. At the end of the experiment, about 9 to 10 kg ha–1 of the applied labelled N was found in soil upto 60 cm depth. Most of the labelled soil N (69–76%) was located in the upper 0–20 cm soil layer indicating little movement to lower depths despite intensive cropping for 4 years.  相似文献

There is currently limited understanding of the contribution of biological N2 fixation (diazotrophy) to the N budget of large river systems. This natural source of N in boreal river systems may partially explain the sustained productivity of river floodplains in Northern Europe where winter fodder was harvested for centuries without fertilizer amendments. In much of the world, anthropogenic pollution and river regulation have nearly eliminated opportunities to study natural processes that shaped early nutrient dynamics of large river systems; however, pristine conditions in northern Fennoscandia allow for the retrospective evaluation of key biochemical processes of historical significance. We investigated biological N2 fixation (diazotrophy) as a potential source of nitrogen fertility at 71 independent floodplain sites along 10 rivers and conducted seasonal and intensive analyses at a subset of these sites. Biological N2 fixation occurred in all floodplains, averaged 24.5 kg N ha−1 yr−1 and was down regulated from over 60 kg N ha−1 yr−1 to 0 kg N ha−1 yr−1 by river N pollution. A diversity of N2-fixing cyanobacteria was found to colonize surface detritus in the floodplains. The data provide evidence for N2 fixation to be a fundamental source of new N that may have sustained fertility at alluvial sites along subarctic rivers. Such data may have implications for the interpretation of ancient agricultural development and the design of contemporary low-input agroecosystems.  相似文献
