We analyze the association between the rates of multiple maternities. Correlation analysis is suitable if there are at least monotonic relationships between the variables. A decreasing tendency can be observed in the rates of multiple maternities in Sweden and in its 25 counties for the period 1751-1960 and the effect of external variables can be assumed to be monotonic. After 1960, the rates of multiple maternities show marked increases, mainly caused by ovulation stimulants and the introduction of other artificial reproduction techniques. We transformed the triplet and quadruplet rates according to Hellin's law in order to obtain rates on the same scale as the twinning rate. The time trends for the multiple maternities in Sweden as a whole were quite similar. The regional differences in the twinning rates could not be satisfactorily explained by maternal age. Alternative attempts to eliminate the effect of other time-dependent factors were to study partial correlation coefficients when the time was kept fixed and the correlation coefficients based on cross-sectional regional data. Both the ordinary and the partial correlation coefficients showed strong regional variation. Cross-sectional analyses gave correlation coefficients similar to the partial correlation coefficients for Sweden as a whole. The variations in the correlation coefficients between the twinning and the triplet rates seem to be caused by other time-dependent factors and the effects of these factors show strong regional variation. After elimination of such factors, the correlation between the twinning and the triplet rates is moderate.  相似文献

The flagellates and the ciliates have long been considered to be closely related because of their unicellular nature and the similarity in the structures of the axoneme of the flagella and cilia in both groups. Most protozoologists believe that the ciliates arose from a flagellate. The flagellates that are most similar in structure to the ciliates are the dinoflagellates and two genera of uncertain taxonomic position, Colponema and Katablepharis. Structurally, dinoflagellates have a number of similarities with ciliates. These include the similarity of the cortical alveoli in the ciliates to the thecal vesicles in the dinoflagellates, the possession of tubular cristae, the similarity of the parasomal sac of the ciliates to the pusule of the dinoflagellates, the possession of similar trichocysts and mucocysts, and some similarity in the feeding apparatus. Colponema spp. are probably related to the dinoflagellates and have many of the same similarities with the ciliates. Katablepharis spp. are very similar in structure to the swarmer (embryo) of the suctorian ciliates. Indeed, reduction in the number of cilia to two in the suctorian swarmer and elimination of the macronucleus would result in a cell that is very similar to the Katablepharis cell. The feeding apparatus of Katablepharis spp. and the rest of the ciliates consists of two concentric microtubular arrays associated with vesicles. Information available from nucleotide sequencing of rRNA places the dinoflagellates in an ancestral position to the ciliates. The rRNA of Colponema and Katablepharis spp. has not yet been investigated. The use of stop codons in mRNA is discussed in relation to phylogeny.  相似文献

Nuclear transport is an energy-dependent process mediated by saturable receptors. Import and export receptors are thought to recognize and bind to nuclear localization signals or nuclear export signals, respectively, in the transported molecules. The receptor-substrate interaction can be direct or mediated by an additional adapter protein. The transport receptors dock their cargoes to the nuclear pore complexes (NPC) and facilitate their translocation through the NPC. After delivering their cargoes, the receptors are recycled to initiate additional rounds of transport. Because a transport event for a cargo molecule is unidirectional, the transport receptors engage in asymmetric cycles of translocation across the NPC. The GTPase Ran acts as a molecular switch for receptor-cargo interaction and imparts directionality to the transport process. Recently, the combined use of different in vitro and in vivo approaches has led to the characterization of novel import and export signals and to the identification of the first nuclear import and export receptors.  相似文献

Incubation of a mouse mastocytoma microsomal fraction with UDP-[3H]GlcA and UDP-GlcNAc yielded proteoglycans containing non-sulphated polysaccharide chains. Similar incubations performed in the presence of sulphate donor 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulphate (PAPS) produced both sulphated and non-sulphated proteoglycans, which were separated by chromatography on DEAE-cellulose Analysis by gel chromatography of single polysaccharide chains, released from the proteoglycans by alkali treatment, showed that the non-sulphated chains produced during incubation for 5 min or 25 min, either in the absence or in the presence of PAPS, were of fairly small molecular size, with an average peak Mr of approx. 10 x 10(3)-15 x 10(3). In contrast, the sulphated chains exceeded Mr 100 x 10(3) Pulse-chase experiments suggested that sulphated chains were capable of further elongation. These results indicate that sulphation promotes, by so far unknown mechanisms, further chain elongation. Sulphated proteoglycan (retarded on DEAE-cellulose chromatography) isolated after similar incubation of the microsomal fraction for 1 min only was found to contain a mixture of sulphated and virtually non-sulphated polysaccharide chains. However, when [35S]PAPS was included in the incubations, some 35S was found to be associated, essentially as N-sulphate groups, also with the latter type of chains, preferentially the high-Mr fraction. These results are interpreted in terms of a biosynthetic model by which the heparin proteoglycan is generated through transient interactions of macromolecular intermediates with distinctly separate complexes of membranebound enzymes.  相似文献

Heparin forms a complex with chymotrypsin which is active towards glutaryl-L-phenylalanine-p-nitroanilide (GPANA) and glutaryl-L-phenylalanine-beta-naphthylamide (GPNA) at pH 7.6. The activity of chymotrypsin towards GPANA at pH 7.6 is enhanced in the presence of heparin. Heparin does not bind at the active site of the enzyme since proflavin is not displaced from the active site of chymotrypsin upon complex formation. The heparin-chymotrypsin complex migrates under basic polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis conditions to a position intermediate between heparin and free chymotrypsin. The complex is dissociable under acidic polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis conditions. It is estimated that one to three molecules of heparin can bind to each chymotrypsin molecule on the basis of electrophoretic and enzymic activity data.  相似文献

The interrelationships between vasopressin and the renin-angiotensin system are reviewed. Vasopressin can inhibit the release of renin by the kidney. This effect can occur at physiological plasma concentrations of vasopressin. Centrally administered angiotensin II can stimulate the release of vasopressin, a response that may be partially mediated by brain prostaglandins. The significance of this action of angiotensin II depends on whether there is an effective brain renin-angiotensin system and on whether peripherally generated or administered angiotensin can reach sites in the brain where it can act on vasopressin release. Peripherally administered angiotensin II can under certain, but not all, conditions stimulate vasopressin release. Peripheral angiotensin II can also potentiate the vasopressin response to an osmotic stimulus and to dehydration, but has little effect the release of vasopressin and renin, there is a failure to demonstrate any correlation between the two. Blockade of the renin-angiotensin system fails to modify the vasopressin response to a reduction in blood volume. In conclusion, the physiological significance of the interactions between the vasopressin and the renin-angiotensin system is not as yet clearly established.  相似文献

A mechanism for the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with horseradish peroxidase is proposed which involves the catalytic activity of the carboxylate side chain of aspartate residue 43. The corresponding residue in the active site of metmyoglobin is glycine E8, which explains the inability of metmyoglobin to form compound I. Certain aspects of the proposed peroxidase mechanism may be relevant to the catalytic triad for the serine proteases.  相似文献

In Escherichia coli, distinct but similar minicell phenotypes resulting from mutation at the minB locus and increased expression of ftsZ suggested a possible interaction between these genes. A four- to fivefold increase in FtsZ resulting from increased gene dosage was found to suppress the lethality of minCD expressed from the lac promoter. Since increased MinCD did not affect the level of FtsZ, this suggested that MinCD may antagonize FtsZ to inhibit its cell division activity. This possibility was supported by the finding that alleles of ftsZ isolated as resistant to the cell division inhibitor SulA were also resistant to MinCD. Among the ftsZ(Rsa) alleles, two appeared to be completely resistant to MinCD as demonstrated by the lack of an effect of MinCD on cell length and a minicell phenotype observed in the absence of a significant increase in FtsZ. It was shown that SulA inhibits cell division independently of MinCD.  相似文献

Transport between the nucleus and cytoplasm involves both stationary components and mobile factors acting in concert to move macromolecules through the nuclear pore complex. Multiple transport pathways requiring both unique and shared components have been identified. In the past 18 months, new findings have shed light on the nature of some of the mobile components of these pathways. New receptor-cargo pairs for both import and export pathways have been identified extending the breadth of known transport pathways. Nucleotide sequence analysis, and more recently whole genome analysis, shows that bacterial evolution has often proceeded by horizontal gene flow between different species and genera. In bacteria, gene transfer takes place by transformation, transduction, or conjugation and this review examines the roles of these gene transfer processes, between different bacteria, in a wide variety of ecological niches in the natural environment. This knowledge is necessary for our understanding of plasmid evolution and ecology, as well as for risk assessment. The rise and spread of multiple antibiotic resistance plasmids in medically important bacteria are consequences of intergeneric gene transfer coupled to the selective pressures posed by the increasing use and misuse of antibiotics in medicine and animal feedstuffs. Similarly, the evolution of degradative plasmids is a response to the increasing presence of xenobiotic pollutants in soil and water. Finally, our understanding of the role of horizontal gene transfer in the environment is essential for the evaluation of the possible consequences of the deliberate environmental release of natural or recombinant bacteria for agricultural and bioremediation purposes.  相似文献
