Cooperative breeding, where some individuals help to raise offspring that are not their own, is a relatively rare social system in birds. We studied the breeding biology of a declining cooperative breeder, the grey-crowned babbler Pomatostomus temporalis , with the aim of isolating the social factors that affect its reproductive success. Most breeding pairs were assisted by philopatric offspring, although pairs could breed successfully without helpers. Females laid up to four clutches (usually three eggs per clutch) per season. Male (but not female) helpers increased the number of young fledged from individual nests and the likelihood of re-nesting, resulting in higher seasonal fledgling production. Helper effects on brood size and fledgling production were greater in the second year of the study, which was also characterized by higher nest failure. This suggests that helpers enhance reproduction more in poor conditions. Our study demonstrates the interacting effects of social and ecological factors on reproductive success, and that retention of offspring is not always beneficial for the breeders in cooperative species.  相似文献

In many cases of interspecific kleptoparasitism, hosts developdefensive behaviors to minimize the impact of kleptoparasites.Because vigilance and defensive behaviors are often costly,selection should favor hosts that adjust the amount of investmentneeded to minimize losses to kleptoparasitism. However, examplesof such facultative responses are rare. Here, we investigatethe response of cooperatively breeding pied babblers (Turdoidesbicolor) to the drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis), an avian kleptoparasitethat regularly follows pied babbler groups, often giving alarmcalls to alert the group to predators but also occasionallygiving false alarm calls in order to steal food items. We showthat pied babbler response to drongos varies markedly accordingto babbler group size. In small groups, where there are fewindividuals available to act as sentinels, babblers sentinelless when a drongo is present and respond strongly to drongoalarm calls. However, in large groups, where there are manyindividuals available to participate in predator vigilance,babblers sentinel more often when a drongo is present, rarelyrespond to drongo alarm calls, and aggressively displace drongos,with a consequent decline in the number of successful kleptoparasitismevents. This behavior represent a facultative response to akleptoparasite according to the costs versus benefits of toleratingtheir presence.  相似文献

1. In many noncooperative vertebrates, maternal effects commonly influence offspring survival and development. In cooperative vertebrates, where multiple adults help to raise young from a single brood, social effects may reduce or replace maternal effects on offspring. 2. Factors affecting offspring survival and development at different stages (fledging, nutritional independence and adulthood) were tested in the cooperatively breeding Arabian babbler to determine the relative importance of social, maternal and environmental factors at each stage. An influence of maternal effects was found during the nestling stage only. 3. Social factors affected the survival and development of young at all stages. The amount of food received from helpers influenced post-fledging weight gain, development of foraging skills, and survival to reproductive age. Environmental effects were also important, with groups occupying high-quality territories more likely to produce young that survived to maturity. 4. The strong influence of helper contributions on the survival and development of young at all stages from hatching to maturity suggests social factors may have important long-term effects on offspring fitness in cooperative societies. Traditional measures of offspring survival in cooperative birds, which commonly measure survival to fledging age only, may underestimate the significant benefit of helper contributions on the survival and development of young.  相似文献

Cooperatively breeding Arabian babblers (Turdoides squamiceps) havea repertoire of different calls that they use in predator-induced contexts.We investigated their vocal mobbing behavior in two different predator-inducedsituations. We presented territorial groups of babblers a perched,stuffed owl representing an avian predator and a cat representinga ground predator. Babblers approached in both situations andmobbed the predators with the same two call types. In both predator-inducedsituations their first call was a short, metallic-sounding "tzwick."In response to the cat, babblers continued to primarily usetzwicks. However, in continued response to the owl, the babblersprimarily used long trills. The experiments indicate that differencesin use of two common call types during mobbing provide informationon differences in predator-induced situations, although no calltype per se identified a specific situation. The experiments suggestthat the short tzwicks indicate a higher risk or urgency thantrills and that combinations of both call types may providegraded information about differences in predator-induced situations.The relatively stable groups of these cooperative breeders mighthave favored evolution for using different calls in differentmobbing situations.  相似文献

1.  Behavioural synchrony typically involves trade-offs. In the context of foraging, for example, synchrony may be suboptimal when individuals have different energy requirements but yield net benefits in terms of increased foraging success or decreased predation risk.
2.  Behavioural synchrony may also be advantageous when individuals collaborate to achieve a common goal, such as raising young. For example, in several bird species, provisioners synchronize nest-feeding visits. However, despite the apparent prevalence of provisioning synchrony, it is not known whether it is adaptive or what its function might be.
3.  Here, we propose a novel explanation for provisioning synchrony: it increases brood survival by decreasing the number of temporally separate nest visits and accordingly the chance that the nest will be detected by predators. Using cooperatively breeding pied babblers, we showed experimentally that provisioners synchronized nest visits by waiting for another provisioner before returning to the nest. Brood survival increased with provisioning synchrony. Provisioners were more likely to synchronize feeding visits for older nestlings as they were louder and possibly more conspicuous to predators. Finally, provisioners in large groups were more likely to wait for other provisioners and synchronized a higher proportion of all visits than those in smaller groups. Thus, provisioning synchrony may be one mechanism by which large groups increase brood survival in this species.

In cooperatively breeding species, the fitness consequences of producing sons or daughters depend upon the fitness impacts of positive (repayment hypothesis) and negative (local competition hypothesis) social interactions among relatives. In this study, we examine brood sex allocation in relation to the predictions of both the repayment and the local competition hypotheses in the cooperatively breeding long-tailed tit Aegithalos caudatus. At the population level, we found that annual brood sex ratio was negatively related to the number of male survivors across years, as predicted by the local competition hypothesis. At an individual level, in contrast to predictions of the repayment hypothesis, there was no evidence for facultative control of brood sex ratio. However, immigrant females produced a greater proportion of sons than resident females, a result consistent with both hypotheses. We conclude that female long-tailed tits make adaptive decisions about brood sex allocation.  相似文献

Neolamprologus pulcher is a cooperatively breeding cichlid fish,in which helpers stay in their natal territory and help withbrood care, territory defense, and maintenance. In this studywe investigated helper effects by an experimental group sizereduction in the field. After this manipulation, focal helpersin reduced groups tended to feed less, and small helpers visitedthe breeding shelter significantly more often than same-sizedhelpers in control groups. No evidence was found that remaininghelpers compensated for the removed helpers by increasing territorydefense and maintenance behavior. Breeders, however, did showa lower defense rate, possibly caused by an increase in broodcare effort. Survival of fry was significantly lower in removalthan control groups, which provides the first experimental proofin a natural population of fish that brood care helpers do effectivelyhelp. The data suggest that in small, generally younger, helpers,kin selection may be an important evolutionary cause of cooperation.Large helpers, however, who are generally older and less relatedto the breeders than small helpers are suggested to pay to beallowed to stay in the territory by helping. Suppression by dominants of female subordinate reproduction has been found in many vertebrate social groups, but has rarely been shown experimentally. Here experimental evidence is provided for reproductive suppression in the group-living Lake Tanganyika cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher. Within groups of three unrelated females, suppression was due to medium- and small-sized females laying less frequently compared with large females, and compared with medium females in control pairs. Clutch size and average egg mass of all females depended on body size, but not on rank. In a second step, a large female was removed from the group and a very small female was added to keep the group size constant. The medium females immediately seized the dominant breeding position in the group and started to reproduce as frequently as control pairs, whereas clutch size and egg mass did not change. These results show that female subordinate cichlids are reproductively capable, but apparently suppressed with respect to egg laying. Nevertheless, some reproduction is tolerated, possibly to ensure continued alloparental care by subordinate females.  相似文献

Nesting ecology and population studies indicate that diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) exhibit nest site fidelity and high habitat fidelity. However, genetic studies indicate high levels of gene flow. Because dispersal affects the genetics and population dynamics of a species, we used six highly polymorphic microsatellite markers to investigate sex-biased dispersal and natal philopatry of M. terrapin in Barnegat Bay, NJ. We compared results of spatial autocorrelation analysis, assignment methods and Wright's F(ST) estimators to a mark-recapture analysis. Mark-recapture analysis over a 4-year period indicated that most individuals have relatively small home ranges (<2 km), with mature females displaying greater home ranges than males. Goodness of fit analysis of our mark-recapture study indicated that some juvenile males were likely transient individuals moving through our study location. Mean assignment indices and first-generation migrant tests indicated that mature males were more prone to disperse than mature females, but first-generation migrant tests indicated that per capita there are more female than male dispersers. Thus, the relative importance of males and females on gene flow in terrapin populations may change in relation to population sex ratios. Spatial autocorrelation analysis indicated that mature females exhibited natal philopatry to nesting beaches, but first-generation migrant tests indicated that a small number of females failed to nest on natal beaches. Finally, we discuss the important conservation implications of male-biased dispersal and natal philopatry in the diamondback terrapin.  相似文献

1. Senescence (or 'ageing') is a widespread and important process in wild animal populations, but variation in ageing patterns within and between species is poorly understood.
2. In cooperatively breeding species, the costs of reproduction are shared between breeders and one or more helpers. The effects of ageing in breeders may therefore be moderated by the presence of helpers, but there have been very few studies of senescence patterns in natural populations of cooperative breeders.
3. Here, we use 13 years of data from a long-term study population of wild meerkats ( Suricata suricatta ) to investigate age-related changes in several traits known to be key components of reproductive success in females of this species.
4. Four of the six traits studied exhibited significant declines with age, indicating senescence. Litter size, the number of litters produced per year and the number of pups that survived to emergence from the natal burrow per year all increased with female age up to a peak at c. 4 years, and declined steeply thereafter; the mean pup weight at emergence in a given litter declined steadily from age zero.
5. These results provide the first evidence of reproductive senescence in a wild population of a cooperatively breeding vertebrate. Breeding success declined with age despite the sharing of reproductive costs in this species, but further study is needed to investigate whether helping affects other aspects of senescence, including survival.  相似文献

Group living can provide individuals with several benefits, including cooperative vigilance and lower predation rates. Individuals in larger groups may be less vulnerable to predation due to dilution effects, efficient detection or greater ability to repel predators. Individuals in smaller groups may consequently employ alternative behavioural tactics to compensate for their greater vulnerability to predators. Here, we describe how pied babbler (Turdoides bicolor) fledging age varies with group size and the associated risk of nestling predation. Nestling predation is highest in smaller groups, but there is no effect of group size on fledgling predation. Consequently, small groups fledge young earlier, thereby reducing the risk of predation. However, there is a cost to this behaviour as younger fledglings are less mobile than older fledglings: they move shorter distances and are less likely to successfully reach the communal roost tree. The optimal age to fledge young appears to depend on the trade-off between reduced nestling predation and increased fledgling mobility. We suggest that such trade-offs may be common in species where group size critically affects individual survival and reproductive success.  相似文献

We examined sex allocation patterns in island and mainland populationsof cooperatively breeding white-winged fairy-wrens. The markeddifferences in social structure between island and mainlandpopulations, in addition to dramatic plumage variation amongmales both within and between populations, provided a uniquesituation in which we could investigate different predictionsfrom sex allocation theory in a single species. First, we testthe repayment (local resource enhancement) hypothesis by askingwhether females biased offspring sex ratios in relation to theassistance they derived from helpers. Second, we test the malequality (attractiveness) hypothesis, which suggests that femalesmated to attractive high-quality males should bias offspringsex ratios in favor of males. Finally, we test the idea thatfemales in good condition should bias offspring sex ratios towardmales because they are able to allocate more resources to offspring,whereas females in poor condition should have increased benefitsfrom producing more female offspring (Trivers-Willard hypothesis).We used molecular sexing techniques to assess total offspringsex ratios of 86 breeding pairs over 2 years. Both offspringand first brood sex ratios were correlated with the pair-male'sbody condition such that females increased the proportion ofmales in their brood in relation to the body condition (masscorrected for body size) of their social partner. This relationwas both significant and remarkably similar in both years ofour study and in both island and mainland populations. Althoughconfidence of paternity can be low in this and other fairy-wrenspecies, we show how this finding might be consistent with themale quality (attractiveness) hypothesis with respect to malecondition. There was no support for the repayment hypothesis;the presence of helpers had no effect on offspring sex ratios.There was weak support for both the male quality (attractiveness)hypothesis with respect to plumage color and the maternal conditionhypothesis, but their influence on offspring sex ratios wasnegligible after controlling for the effects of pair-male condition.  相似文献

Prolonged postfledging care is a commonly observed behaviorin many cooperatively breeding species and has been shown toprovide young with both survival and developmental benefits.However, the causes of intraspecific variation in postfledgingcare and the consequences of this variation on the developmentof young remain unclear. Here we investigate factors affectingthe duration of postfledging care in the cooperatively breedingpied babbler (Turdoides bicolor). We show that the durationof care is variable (40–97 days) and is determined primarilyby the cost of care. Adults in groups with a low adult:fledglingratio were unable to maintain body mass during the period ofchick provisioning and subsequently ceased care of young earlier.This had a strong influence on offspring development: fledglingsthat received longer periods of care attained higher foragingefficiency and body mass than their counterparts at 6 monthsof age. The duration of postfledging care also had long-termeffects, with individuals that received longer periods of postfledgingcare more likely to successfully disperse from their natal group.This had important fitness implications as successful dispersersbecame reproductively active at an earlier age than their "failed-disperser"counterparts. These findings highlight the importance of consideringlong-term influences when assessing the benefits of prolongedpostfledging care on offspring fitness and development in cooperativesocieties.  相似文献

In cooperatively breeding species, helpers can alleviate reproductive constraints by assuming the role of primary carers to first-born young, liberating breeders to invest in subsequent broods. However, evidence on how first-born young are transferred to helpers is currently lacking. We propose that breeder-offspring aggression might facilitate inter-brood division and test this idea using data from a wild population of cooperatively breeding pied babblers (Turdoides bicolor). After second-brood young hatch, breeders become increasingly aggressive to first-brood fledglings and attack them when they beg for food. After an attack, fledglings reduce begging. Helpers are much less aggressive to begging fledglings and fledglings subsequently tend to target helpers, rather than breeders, when begging for food. In this way, first-born dependent young are transferred to helpers, resulting in a partitioning of tasks among breeders and helpers. Task partitioning in eusocial insects is thought to be determined by the morphological or physiological characteristics of individuals. This complementary study suggests that flexible behavioural strategies may also result in specialized roles in cooperatively breeding vertebrates.  相似文献

Mothers should adjust the size of propagules to the selectiveforces to which these offspring will be exposed. Usually, alarger propagule size is favored when young are exposed to highmortality risk or conspecific competition. Here we test 2 predictionson how egg size should vary with these selective agents. Whenoffspring are cared for by parents and/or alloparents, protectionmay reduce the predation risk to young, which may allow mothersto invest less per single offspring. In the cooperatively breedingcichlid Neolamprologus pulcher, brood care helpers protect groupoffspring and reduce the latters' mortality rate. Therefore,females are expected to reduce their investment per egg whenmore helpers are present. In a first experiment, we tested thisprediction by manipulating the helper number. In N. pulcher,helpers compete for dispersal opportunities with similar-sizedindividuals of neighboring groups. If the expected future competitionpressure on young is high, females should increase their investmentper offspring to give them a head start. In a second experiment,we tested whether females produce larger eggs when perceivedneighbor density is high. Females indeed reduced egg size withincreasing helper number. However, we did not detect an effectof local density on egg size, although females took longer toproduce the next clutch when local density was high. We arguethat females can use the energy saved by adjusting egg sizeto reduced predation risk to enhance future reproductive output.Adaptive adjustment of offspring size to helper number may bean important, as yet unrecognized, strategy of cooperative breeders.  相似文献
