Muscle fibre composition was compared among the proximal (25%), middle (50%) and distal (75%) regions of the muscle length to investigate whether compensatory overload by removal of synergists induces region-specific changes of fibre types in rat soleus and plantaris muscles. In addition, we evaluated fibre cross-sectional area in each region to examine whether fibre recruitment pattern against functional overload is nonuniform in different regions. Increases in muscle mass and fibre area confirmed a significant hypertrophic response in the overloaded soleus and plantaris muscles. Overloading increased the percentage of type I fibres in both muscles and that of type IIA fibres in the plantaris muscle, with the greater changes being found in the middle and distal regions. The percentage of type I fibres in the proximal region was higher than that of the other regions in the control soleus muscle. In the control plantaris muscle, the percentage of type I and IIA fibres in the middle region were higher than that of the proximal and distal regions. With regard to fibre size, type IIB fibre area of the middle and distal regions in the plantaris increased by 51% and 57%, respectively, with the greater changes than that of the proximal region (37%) after overloading. These findings suggest that compensatory overload promoted transformation of type II fibres into type I fibres in rat soleus and plantaris muscles, with the greater changes being found in the middle and distal regions of the plantaris muscle.  相似文献

Generally, immune system architecture varies with different environments, which presumably reflect different pathogen pressures. Specifically, populations from relatively disease-free, oceanic islands are expected to exhibit reorganized immune systems, which might be characterized by attenuated responses, given the costs of immune function. Some insular animals exhibit an 'island syndrome,' including increased susceptibility to disease, and some insular populations have declined when they failed to resist infection by introduced pathogens. I measured eight indices of immune function (haemolysis, haemagglutination, concentration of haptoglobin and concentration of five leukocyte types) in 15 phylogenetically matched pairs of bird populations from North America and from the islands of Hawaii, Bermuda and the Galápagos. Immune responses were not attenuated in insular birds, and several indices, including the concentration of plasma haptoglobin, were elevated. Thus, I find no support for the specific hypothesis that depauperate parasite communities and the costs of immune defences select for reduced immune function. Instead, I suggest that life on islands leads to an apparent reorganization of immune function, which is defined by increases in defences that are innate and inducible. These increases might signal that systems of acquired humoral immunity and immunological memory are less important or dysfunctional in island populations.  相似文献

1.?The growth period is an important determinant of fitness later in life through its effects on first-year survival and future reproduction. Choices by adult females about where to rear their offspring strongly affect growth rates and offspring fitness in geese. 2.?Individual female black brent (Branta bernicla nigricans) tend to raise their broods in the same areas each year, and these areas are consistently ranked with respect to growth rates of goslings. Therefore, some females consistently rear their broods on areas resulting in lower post-fledging fitness. 3.?We explore the potential that growth rates of offspring (and associated fitness consequences) are traded off against other vital rates influencing fitness of either adult females or goslings. Growth of goslings primarily influences fitness after fledging, so one hypothesis is that survival before fledging, which is influenced by predation, is traded off against growth rates and post-fledging survival. 4.?We estimated pre-fledging and post-fledging survival for goslings reared on areas used by broods from the Tutakoke River black brent colony. We examined recaptures, recoveries by hunters and resightings of brent marked as goslings with webtags and standard leg rings. These data were analyzed using capture-mark-recapture models in program mark to derive separate estimates of pre- and post-fledging survival for 18 cohorts (1987-2004) of black brent goslings across seven brood rearing areas (BRAs). 5.?Estimates of pre-fledging survival probability varied from 0·00?±?0·00 (mean?±?95% confidence interval) to 0·92?±?0·1; and estimates of post-fledging survival probability varied from 0·00?±?0·00 to 1·00?±?0·08. Substantial variation existed both among BRAs and years but post-fledging survival declined substantially during the study. 6.?Pre- and post-fledging survival were positively correlated, exhibiting a quadratic relationship (?(post-fledging survival) =?1·00 (±0·47)x-0·83 (±0·480)x(2) , where x?=?pre-fledging survival). Therefore, we did not find a trade-off between pre- and post-fledging survival in black brent goslings across BRAs, suggesting that factors other than foraging conditions and predation on goslings must influence selection of BRAs.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the CNS (central nervous system) in three species of the Proseriata — Archiloa unipunctata (O. Fabricius), Bothriomolus balticus (Meixner), and Promonotus schultzei (Meixner) — was studied and compared to that of the lower flatworms Stenostomum leucops (Catenulida) and Microstomum lineare (Macrostomida) in material available from our previous studies. Conventional electron microscopical fixation was used for A. unipunctata and B. balticus; the tannic-acid-incubation method (TARI), a method that reveals especially nonsynaptic exocytotic release of neuronal substances, was applied in study of P. schultzei.In general, the ultrastructural features of neurons and nerve fibers were similar in proseriates and lower flatworms. A striking feature common to both groups was the secretory appearance of all neurons. A significant difference between them is the occurrence, in the proseriates, of wrapping of neurons by glial cells. Heterogeneity in the population of neuronal vesicles and in structure of synapses in the proseriates are probably advanced characters; by contrast, S. leucops has relatively homogeneous vesicles and simple synapses. A gradual advancement from the state in the catenulids through that in the macrostomids to the proseriates seems to be reflected in the differentiation of synapses and the variability of neuronal vesicles. This probably reflects differences in functional demands but also evolutionary advancement.  相似文献

Summary A retrospective study of 200 missed abortions was performed to determine whether morphological criteria alone are sufficient to ascertain a chromosomal aetiology. Placental changes were clasified into five morphological and four morphometric groups, according to the severity of alterations, and were then correlated with the cytogenetic data. The rate of chromosome anomalies was approximately 50% and was thus not significantly different within the groups II–V, but it was 80% in group I, which covered the most severe placental alterations, namely the partial hydatidiform moles. There was a high incidence of triploidies in group I, trisomies with obligatory early lethality in groups II and III, and X-monosomies in group III. Our findings do not support previous evidence regarding the specificity of certain villous alterations in association with chromosome aberrations. Indeed, they indicate that the placental villi may react similarly to chromosomal and nonchromosomal disturbances and that placental morphology depends on the severity and the temporal onset of the underlying disorder rather than on its type. With respect to chorionic villus samplings (CVS), this would mean that an abnormal villous structure may be suggestive for a chromosome anomaly but does not exclude a normal karyotype.Dedicated to Professor Marlis Tolksdorf on the occasion of her 65th birthday  相似文献

The influence of soluble phenol concentration and polyphenoloxidase activity in leaves of both B‐deficient and B‐sufficient sunflower plants ( Helianthus annuus L. cv. Frankasol) on plasma membrane permeability was investigated, A study was also undertaken as to whether or not the incubation of B‐deficient leaves in ascorbate‐ and calcium‐containing solutions has a beneficial effect on plasma membrane integrity. Plants were cultivated under controlled environmental conditions with deficient and sufficient B supply and different light intensity to provoke changes in phenol metabolism. Analysis of membrane permeability (measured by potassium efflux), soluble phenol concentration and polyphenoloxidase (EC 1.10.3.1) activity of leaves showed that there was no correlation between these parameters. Furthermore, incubation in solutions containing ascorbate and calcium did not decrease the enhanced membrane permeability due to B deficiency, which could, however, be lowered by boric acid application. In summary, the results suggest that B does not maintain plasma membrane integrity by complexing phenols or inhibiting polyphenoloxidase activity, thereby preventing damage by oxygen free radicals. Ascorbate metabolism or calcium‐related disorders seem also not to be involved. It is therefore likely that B has a direct function at the membrane, possibly by stimulating membrane‐related enzymes, or in a structural role similar to that reported for the cell wall.  相似文献

Twins provide a unique capacity to explore relative genetic and environmental contributions to brain development, but results are applicable to non‐twin populations only to the extent that twin and singleton brains are alike. A reason to suspect differences is that as a group twins are more likely than singletons to experience adverse prenatal and perinatal events that may affect brain development. We sought to assess whether this increased risk leads to differences in child or adolescent brain anatomy in twins who do not experience behavioral or neurological sequelae during the perinatal period. Brain MRI scans of 185 healthy pediatric twins (mean age = 11.0, SD = 3.6) were compared to scans of 167 age‐ and sex‐matched unrelated singletons on brain structures measured, which included gray and white matter lobar volumes, ventricular volume, and area of the corpus callosum. There were no significant differences between groups for any structure, despite sufficient power for low type II (i.e. false negative) error. The implications of these results are twofold: (1) within this age range and for these measures, it is appropriate to include healthy twins in studies of typical brain development, and (2) findings regarding heritability of brain structures obtained from twin studies can be generalized to non‐twin populations.  相似文献

Rate of grain filling in terms of dry mass accumulated per panicle per day was measured in field-grown rice in the dry season in the Philippines and compared to rates of light-saturated photosynthesis per unit leaf area (P(max)) measured at 350 micro l l(-1) CO(2) for 21 d after flowering. Five new plant type (tropical japonica) varieties (NPT) and one indica variety (IR72) were used and these gave some variation in rates and patterns of grain filling. A rapid grain-filling phase (RGFP) occurred approximately 10 d after flowering in most varieties. There was no consistent relationship in any variety between the rate of grain-filling and P(max) and chlorophyll content, both of which remained mostly unchanged throughout grain filling. Significant declines in the amount of total leaf protein and ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) occurred, but these did not occur at the same time as the RGFP in all varieties. A decrease in the ratio of chlorophyll a/b preceded these changes and a transient rise in chlorophyll content was also observed in four varieties at this time. There was no significant change in leaf non-structural carbohydrate content during or following the RGFP. It is concluded that the decline in Rubisco and protein content in NPT was not reflected in photosynthetic activity. Hence in these field experiments Rubisco accumulated to a level in excess of photosynthetic requirements, serving as a store of nitrogen for grain filling.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown an association between low concentration of serum cholesterol, as well as high concentration of serum cortisol, in suicide behavior. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether men after a violent suicide attempts have different serum cholesterol and cortisol concentrations than those who attempted suicide by non-violent methods. Venous blood samples were collected within 24 hours of admission, to study concentrations of serum cholesterol and cortisol. The sample consisted of 31 male subjects suffering from schizophrenia, admitted in a general hospital after suicide attempt, and was compared with 15 schizophrenic nonsuicidal male controls. Patients with a violent suicidal attempt were found to have significantly lower cholesterol levels and significantly higher cortisol level than patients with non-violent attempts and the control subjects. Our findings suggest that suicide attempts should not be considered a homogenous group. The hypothesis of an association of violent suicidal attempts and peripheral biological markers (cholesterol and cortisol) was supported by our findings.  相似文献

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is the standard therapeutic regimen for locally advanced breast cancer. However, clinical physical examination and imaging results fail to accurately assess the treatment response, and postoperative pathological examination has a time lag in response to therapeutic effect which is not conducive to the timely adjustment of treatment strategies. A previous study has shown that miR-301a was associated with invasion and metastasis in breast cancer, and was found to be involved in endocrine therapy resistance; however, evidence regarding the correlation between miR-301a expression and NAC efficacy remains scarce. In this study, 101 patients with locally advanced breast cancer were included. All patients received anthracycline based chemotherapy. The expression level of miR-301a in pretreatment core needle biopsy tissues was determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. Relevant clinicopathological data were collected, and the correlation between miR-301a expression and NAC efficacy was assessed. Based on our data, miR-301a cannot be used to identify whether breast cancer benefits from NAC, and no correlation was observed between miR-301a expression and clinicopathological characteristics. In conclusion, miR-301a may not be a potential prognostic biomarker of NAC efficacy in breast cancer.  相似文献

Although immune responses following soft-tissue trauma-hemorrhage are markedly different in young (6-8 weeks) and aged (18-20 months) mice, it remains unknown if there are any differences in immune responses in middle-aged and young mice following bone fracture, soft-tissue trauma-hemorrhage (Fx-TH). To study this, young (6-8 weeks) and middle-aged (approximately 12 months) C3H/HeN male mice were subjected to sham operation or Fx-TH followed by resuscitation with Ringer's lactate. The mice were sacrificed 2 h thereafter and splenocytes, bone marrow cells (BM) and Kupffer cells (KC) were harvested, purified and stimulated with ConA (for splenocytes) or LPS (for BM and KC) in vitro. Splenocyte release of Th1 (IL-2 and IFN-gamma) cytokines was decreased and Th2 (IL-4 and IL-10) cytokine release was increased following Fx-TH in both young and middle-aged mice. However, the decrease in IL-2 and increase in IL-10 were significantly more in middle-aged mice compared to young mice (p < 0.05). Furthermore, splenocyte proliferation was decreased more in middle-aged mice compared to young mice following Fx-TH (p < 0.05). Additionally, TNF-alpha production was more in BM from middle-aged compared to BM from young mice after Fx-TH (p < 0.05). The production of IL-6 and IL-10 was also significantly higher in KC from middle-aged mice compared to young ones following Fx-TH. These results suggest that at middle age, the immune responses to Fx-TH are significantly different from those observed in young mice in different compartments of the body. Although the mechanism of the difference in various compartments in middle-aged vs. young mice following Fx-TH remains unknown, the decreased IL-2 production along with other altered T cell and macrophage functions may contribute to an increased susceptibility to sepsis in middle-aged vs. young individuals.  相似文献

It is believed that there is symplastic isolation between the embryo (new sporophyte) and the endosperm (maternal-parental origin tissue, which nourishes the embryo) in angiosperms. However, in embryological literature there are rare examples in which plasmodesmata between the embryo suspensor and endosperm cells have been recorded (three species from Fabaceae). This study was undertaken in order to test the hypothesis that plasmodesmata between the embryo suspensor and the endosperm are not so rare but also occur in other angiosperm families; in order to check this, we used the Crassulaceae family because embryogenesis in Crassulaceae has been studied extensively at an ultrastructure level recently and also we tread members of this family as model for suspensor physiology and function studies. These plasmodesmata even occurred between the basal cell of the two-celled proembryo and endosperm cells. The plasmodesmata were simple at this stage of development. During the development of the embryo proper and the suspensor, the structure of plasmodesmata changes. They were branched and connected with electron-dense material. Our results suggest that in Crassulaceae with plasmodesmata between the endosperm and suspensor, symplastic connectivity at this cell-cell boundary is still reduced or blocked at a very early stage of embryo development (before the globular stage). The occurrence of plasmodesmata between the embryo suspensor and endosperm cells suggests possible symplastic transport between these different organs, at least at a very early stage of embryo development. However, whether this transport actually occurs needs to be proven experimentally. A broader analysis of plants from various families would show whether the occurrence of plasmodesmata between the embryo suspensor and the endosperm are typical embryological characteristics and if this is useful in discussions about angiosperm systematic and evolution.  相似文献

The sexual selection theory predicts that traits associated with male–male competition or female mate choice honestly reflects individual quality when they are costly and condition dependent. Dominance seems to be a reliable signal of male quality. The aim of this study was to investigate whether dominance rank, measured in terms of agonistic interactions and trait correlated with dominance, such as preputial gland mass, depends on condition in captive male bank voles. We used five physiological measures to characterize condition: body mass, neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio (N/L ratio), spleen mass, thymus mass and adrenal gland mass. Additionally, the condition of males was challenged with a T cell-dependent antigen, sheep red blood cells. Dominance rank was not significantly related to body mass, N/L ratio and adrenal gland mass but was positively correlated with immune defence organ mass. Moreover, testes mass was positively related to the N/L ratio. However, after Bonferroni correction, only the relationship between preputial gland mass and thymus mass remained significant. Results of this experiment showed condition dependence of dominance in captive male bank voles.  相似文献

In the new world tropics there is an extravagant array of sympatric butterfly mimicry rings. This is puzzling under strictly coevolutionary (Müllerian) mimicry: all unpalatable species should converge as ‘co-mimics' to the same pattern. If mimicry has usually evolved in unpalatable species by one-sided (Batesian) evolution, however, it is easy to see that mimicry rings centred on different models could remain distinct. If mimicry rings were also segregated by habitat, a diversity of mimicry rings could be stabilized. In this paper we report correlations between behaviour and mimicry of nine unpalatable Heliconius species. It is already known that co-mimics fly in similar habitats, and non-mimics fly in different habitats, although there is much overlap. Contrary to a previous report, we find little difference in flight heights of heliconiine mimicry rings; all species fly from ground level to the canopy. However, co-mimics roost at night in similar habitats and at similar heights above the ground, but in different habitats and at different heights from species in other mimicry rings. Heliconius (especially the erato taxonomic group) are renowned for roosting gregariously; and co-mimics roost gregariously with each other more often than with non-mimics. Gregarious roosting is therefore common between species, as well as within species. There are thus strong links between mimicry and behavioural ecology in Heliconius. The paradoxical correlation between nocturnal roosting and visual mimicry is presumably explained by bird predation at dusk when roosts are forming, or at dawn before they have disbanded. Direct evidence of predation is lacking, but there are high rates of disturbance by birds at these times. These results, together with knowledge of the phylogeny of Heliconius, suggest that species from the melpomene-group of Heliconius have radiated to occupy mimetic niches protected by model species in the Ithomiinae and the erato-group of Heliconius. A variety of sympatric mimicry rings is apparently maintained because key models fail to converge, while more rapidly-evolving unpalatable mimics evolve towards the colour patterns of the models. The maintenance of mimetic diversity would be aided by the habitat and behavioural differences between mimicry rings revealed here, provided that different predators are found in different habitats. This explanation for the maintenance of multiple mimicry rings is more plausible for Heliconius mimicry than alternatives based on visual mating constraints, thermal ecology, or camouflage.  相似文献
