Editorial     
Creativity is about more than imagining or making something that has not previously existed. Though most of us perceive of the concept of creativity actualized as creation, creativity is really much broader—it is that force in each of us that begins with a yearning to answer an unanswered (or ill-answered) question by imagining more than one correct new answer. Being comprehensively creative then concludes when an answer is realized. Often this concluded answer has to do with changing something that was true before we thought and acted creatively, in order to make a new or additional truth. In such cases, being creative is most fundamentally about advancing change in or about something. This paper examines the differences between imagining, thinking, and acting creatively and about how each is related to leadership and change.  相似文献

Darwin offered an intriguing answer to the species problem. He doubted the existence of the species category as a real category in nature, but he did not doubt the existence of those taxa called “species”. And despite his scepticism of the species category, Darwin continued using the word “species”. Many have said that Darwin did not understand the nature of species. Yet his answer to the species problem is both theoretically sound and practical. On the theoretical side, Darwin’s answer is confirmed by contemporary biology, and it offers a more satisfactory answer to the species problem than recent attempts to save the species category. On the practical side, Darwin’s answer frees us from the search for the correct theoretical definition of “species”. But at the same time it does not require that we banish the word “species” from biology as some recent sceptics of the species category advocate. © The Willi Hennig Society 2010.  相似文献

Cerebral mechanisms of perceiving and telling lies were studied by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) both after an actual deceptive response and during the time interval when the subject decided to tell a lie. Ten healthy volunteers participated in the study. The test consisted of their playing a game against a computer. The subjects could choose between deceptive and truthful answers so as to win the game. The subjects gave a deceptive answer intentionally, the structure of the test ensuring equal numbers of deceptive and truthful answers. The relaxation times in the cases of truthful and deceptive answers did not differ significantly from each other. The comparison of ERPs accompanying deceptive and truthful answers showed the existence of a negativity with a latent period of 90 ms in the regions of the right frontal, central, and right parietal derivations. This negativity indicated that the brain reacted to a deceptive answer even if this a priori “erroneous” act ensured reaching the goal and, in this sense, was subjectively relevant. In terms of the cerebral error detector mechanism, this phenomenon may be regarded as a special case of a general response of the brain to giving an incorrect (deceptive) answer, rather than a response to a lie per se. The interval of time when, presumably, the decision on a deceptive answer was being made was found to contain the late positive component P540, which is most likely to be involved in the preparation of the deceptive answer and the intention to tell a lie.  相似文献

In this paper we attempt to sharpen and to provide an answer to the question of when human beings first become conscious. Since it is relatively uncontentious that a capacity for raw sensation precedes and underpins all more sophisticated mental capacities, our question is tantamount to asking when human beings first have experiences with sensational content. Two interconnected features of our argument are crucial. First, we argue that experiences with sensational content are supervenient on facts about electrical activity in the cerebral cortex which can be ascertained through EEG readings. Second, we isolate from other notions of a'functioning brain'that which is required to underpin the view that a cortex is functioning in a way which could give rise to rudimentary conscious experiences. We investigate the development in the human fetus of the anatomical and chemical pathways which underpin (immature) cortical activity and the growth and maturation of the electrical circuitry specifically associated with sensational content in adult experience. We conclude (tentatively) that a fetus becomes conscious at about 30 to 35 weeks after conception; an answer based on a careful analysis of EEG readings at various stages of cortical development. Finally, we survey the possible ethical ramifications of our answer.  相似文献

Summary. Experimental data often consist of serial measurements on subjects after a treatment. Typical questions concerning such data are: (A) Do subjects really react to treatment or are the fluctuations just random? (B) What are the numerical characteristics of the response? (C) Is the response identical in all groups? Differences between the individuals in the dynamics of the reaction make it difficult to apply standard statistical procedures. This paper proposes to answer questions (A) and (B) at the individual level, then to give an answer to (C) on the basis of this information. This kind of analysis may be useful since it can separate subjects giving response from those that do not and can identify individual response patterns and compare treatments with respect to each numerical characteristic separately. To answer question (A), a permutation test is proposed and its power is evaluated by simulation.  相似文献

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has previously been parallelized primarily by distributing the computation corresponding to particles across multiple processors. In these approaches, the only benefit of additional processors is an increased swarm size. However, in many cases this is not efficient when scaled to very large swarm sizes (on very large clusters). Current methods cannot answer well the question: “How can 1000 processors be fully utilized when 50 or 100 particles is the most efficient swarm size?” In this paper we attempt to answer that question with a speculative approach to the parallelization of PSO that we refer to as SEPSO.  相似文献

Comparative sequence analysis on a genomic scale has opened the door for the systematic analysis of cis-acting regulatory DNA. It is now possible to begin to answer basic questions such as, how much meaningful noncoding sequence is in the genome? How strong is natural selection on functional noncoding sequences in different species? Two recent articles have capitalized on the comparative genomic approach in an attempt to answer these questions with surprising results.  相似文献

It is well known that (1) natural selection typically favors an allele with both a large mean fitness and a small variance in fitness; and (2) investors typically prefer a portfolio with both a large mean return and a small variance in returns. In the case of investors, this mean-variance trade-off reflects risk aversion; in the case of evolution, the mathematics is straightforward but the result is harder to intuit. In particular, it is harder to understand where, in the mathematics of natural selection, risk aversion arises. Here I present a result that suggests a simple answer to this question. Although my answer is essentially identical to one offered previously, my path to it differs somewhat from previous approaches. Some may find this new approach easier to intuit.  相似文献

In this paper, a new representation is presented for the maximum quartet consistency (MQC) problem, where solving the MQC problem becomes searching for an ultrametric matrix that satisfies a maximum number of given quartet topologies. A number of structural properties of the MQC problem in this new representation are characterized through formulating into answer set programming, a recent powerful logic programming tool for modeling and solving search problems. Using these properties, a number of optimization techniques are proposed to speed up the search process. The experimental results on a number of simulated data sets suggest that the new representation, combined with answer set programming, presents a unique perspective to the MQC problem.  相似文献

Those who favor and those who oppose the interruption of pregnancy with anencephalic fetuses answer the question 'what is the right to life?' differently. Those in favor argue that life exists only when it is 'viable'; that is to say, when cerebral activities occur or may occur. Those who oppose it argue that it is not possible to describe 'life' as residing in a particular quality, since life 'exists from conception'. In fact, in both cases, the noun 'life' is being defined by a particular quality, either as 'viable' or as 'existing from the time of conception'. Also, simply saying that 'there is life' cannot count as a neutral answer since those who utter such a sentence employ an unspecified criterion to establish if there is life or not. There are two possible ways to investigate this controversial matter: either we look for a definition of 'life' which is neutral and objective and does not reside in a particular quality or we try to establish whether or not the search for a neutral point of view can lead to a satisfactory answer. In this article we explore the argument against the interruption of pregnancy - as defined above - in order to show 1) the impossibility of establishing a neutral point of view regarding knowledge; 2) the existence of a psychological motivation which justifies the longing for an absolute criterion for the evaluation of human actions. This psychological motivation is analyzed from a Nietzschean perspective.  相似文献

Is DNA variation maintained in organelle genomes selectively neutral? The answer to this question has important implications for many aspects of ecology and evolution. While traditionally the answer has been ‘yes’, recent studies in animals have shown that, on the contrary, mitochondrial DNA polymorphism is frequently adaptive. In plants, however, the neutrality assumption has not been strongly challenged. Here, we begin with a critical evaluation of arguments in favour of this long‐held view. We then discuss the latest empirical evidence for the opposing prediction that sequence variation in plant cytoplasmic genomes is frequently adaptive. While outstanding research progress is being made towards understanding this fundamental topic, we highlight the need for studies that combine information ranging from field experiments to physiology to molecular evolutionary biology. Such an interdisciplinary approach provides a means for determining the frequency, drivers and evolutionary significance of adaptive organelle DNA variation.  相似文献

We investigate the effect that noise has on the evolution of measurement strategies and competition in populations of organisms with sensory systems of differing fidelities. We address two questions motivated by experimental and theoretical work on sensory systems in noisy environments: (1) How complex must a sensory system be in order to face the need to develop adaptive measurement strategies that change depending on the noise level? (2) Does the principle of competitive exclusion for sensory systems force one population to win out over all others? We find that the answer to the first question is that even very simple sensory systems will need to change measurement strategies depending on the amount of noise in the environment. Interestingly, the answer to the second question is that, in general, at most two populations with different fidelity sensory systems may co-exist within a single environment.  相似文献

Pathological alterations being similar to those that can be seen while hormonal dysbalance, particularly the increase of juvenile hormone (JH) titre, is one of the consequences of microsporidian infections. Though the increase of JH in insects infected with microsporidia has not been shown directly, there are many indirect proofs of this. It has been believed that JH is produced by microsporidia. But this has not been shown for microsporidia or for other endoparasites. In this article we want to propose another hypothesis. We suppose that during microsporidiosis the following events develop: exhaustion of host nutrition stores and other destructive consequences of microsporidian dwelling in host cells lead to the decrease of host biosynthetical and reparation activity in the infected cells and then to destructive alterations that can be seen by electro-microscopic methods. The infected cells are stressed and then the typical answer for many physiological stresses follows. Secretion of prothoracicotropic hormone by brain neurosecretory cells is inhibited and as a result the production and release of ecdysone is also inhibited and ecdysteroid titre decreases. The activity of JH-esterases is decreased and as a result the JH titre is increased. If microsporidian infection causes the stress in the host cells, the endocrine system will undoubtedly answer to this stress and this answer will definitely be the same as for all other stresses. Thus, in any case JH titre will be increased in infected insects independently of whether microsporidia produce JH or not. So, hormonal alterations in infected insects should be the consequence not of the microsporidian JH production but of the host response reaction to infection. We suppose that microsporidia do not differ from other parasites of insects and that they can not produce JH.  相似文献

In vitro and in vivo studies of available and investigational antifungals have broadened our understanding of the pharmacodynamics of these agents as well as the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic characteristics that are associated with efficacy. These data are increasingly being used as surrogate means to answer questions about dosing and administration of antimicrobial agents in order to improve outcomes in patients with invasive fungal infections, as these questions are difficult to answer in clinical trials. The objective of this article is to review the pharmacodynamic activity of widely used classes of antifungal agents, including the azoles, amphotericin B, and the echinocandins, discuss the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic parameters associated with efficacy of these agents in preclinical studies, and describe how this information is being translated into the clinical arena to optimize patient outcomes.  相似文献

Consider the action of selection with fitness w(x) on a quantitative trait x. What selection, among those that produce the same value of selection differential, leads to minimal values of (a) genetic load, (b) variance of the relative fitness, and (c) variance of the trait after selection? We have shown that for (a) and (c) the answer is strict truncation, whereas for (b) the answer is linear selection. The results for (a) and (b) are true for any selection, while the result for (c) is true only for directional selection. Implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

The number of plant pests that may be transported to new areas with international trade is too great for subjecting all of them to a full scale pest risk assessment. There is therefore a need for a quick risk assessment procedure that also ranks the pests according to their risk. The FinnPRIO model can be used to assess the risk of alien plant pests for Finland. It follows the basic structure of a full scale pest risk assessment, i.e. it can be used to separately estimate the probabilities of entry, establishment (including spread), and the likely impacts. The model also includes a section for assessing preventability and controllability of a pest invasion. The model consists of multiple-choice questions with answer options yielding a different number of points. For each question the most likely answer option and the plausible minimum and maximum options are chosen. The total risk score is simulated using a PERT distribution, providing a scale of potential risk for each pest and indicating the level of uncertainty associated with the assessment. The model is accompanied by a guide for the interpretation of the questions and answer options. The model’s functionality has been tested through simulations, and it has been validated by comparing pest rankings produced using the model to those obtained in expert workshops. To date, 95 pests have been assessed with the model. The results indicate that the model is well capable of differentiating pests based on their estimated risk.  相似文献

Can a heritability value tell us something about the weight of genetic versus environmental causes that have acted in the development of a particular individual? Two possible questions arise. Q1: what portion of the phenotype of X is due to its genes and what portion to its environment? Q2: what portion of X’s phenotypic deviation from the mean is a result of its genetic deviation and what portion a result of its environmental deviation? An answer to Q1 provides the full information about X’s development, while an answer to Q2 leaves out a large portion unexplained—that portion which corresponds to the phenotypic mean. Q1 is unanswerable, but I show it is nevertheless legitimate under certain quantitative genetics models. With regard to Q2, opinions in the philosophical and biological literature differ as to its legitimacy. I argue that not only is it legitimate, but in particular, under a few simplifying assumptions, it allows for a quantitative probabilistic answer: for normally distributed quantitative traits with no G-E correlation or statistical G × E interaction, we can assess the probability that X’s genes had a greater effect than its environment on its deviation from the mean population value. This probability is expressed as a function the heritability and the individual’s phenotypic value; we can also provide a quantitative probabilistic answer to Q2 for an arbitrary individual where the probability is a function only of heritability.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Puerto Rican migration to the United States has skyrocketed as a result of various political and economic factors faced in Puerto Rico. I focus my attention on how Puerto Ricans are represented in newspapers through narratives of belonging, exclusion and/or perceived threat. I seek to answer is: how are Puerto Ricans and other Latinx groups framed in relation to each other in the New York Times? To answer this query, I perform a content analysis of the paper of record, the New York Times. I argue that Puerto Ricans are not only framed as in conflict in relation to other Latinos, while also being framed as possessing some sort of colour capital that can be transferred over to particular spaces. The NYT constructs boundaries that reinforce while also transform what groups are perceived as threats.  相似文献

This article examines the relationship between the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). It attempts to answer the questions of whether the PSI is legal or illegal under UNCLOS and whether U.S. accession to UNCLOS would enhance or create difficulties for the implementation of the PSI. The author concludes that U.S. accession to the Convention would not affect adversely the implementation and effectiveness of the PSI. On the contrary, accession to UNCLOS could help increase U.S. credibility and leadership in dealing with the threat to international peace and security posed by weapons of mass destruction proliferation. It also suggests that all the relevant information needs to be gathered and examined carefully in order to answer the question of whether a PSI interdiction action is legal under UNCLOS or not.  相似文献
