In spite of its size and biological significance, we know little about the ecology of the Pantanal, a 140,000 km2 floodplain in west-central Brazil. Increasing human pressures make this lack of understanding particularly critical. Using transects and 1 m2 circular plots, we documented floristic composition and interacting-environmental conditions associated with littoral herbaceous vegetation along inundation gradients at two ecologically-distinct sites in the Pantanal. We recorded water depth and percent cover for each species in Baía Piuval, a bay in the Bento Gomes River (Mato Grosso), and in a bay in the Acurizal Reserve (Mato Grosso do Sul). Baía Piuval and Acurizal plots contained a total of 22 and 18 macrophyte species, respectively. At both sites Eichhornia azurea and Salvinia auriculata occurred most frequently as dominant or co-dominant species. Chi2 analysis, used to quantify zonations along depth gradients, generated four different groups of species ( p < 0.05) for Baía Piuval. For Acurizal, two significantly different groups ( p < 0.05) occurred with an intermediate assemblage of species that could be assigned to either group. Canonical correspondence analysis, used to analyze species distributions, showed a pattern consistent with the Chi2 results for Baía Piuval but not for Acurizal. Higher species richness and diversity occurred where dry season and low water levels coincided and richness was generally highest in proximal plots where water depths were lowest. Our results are consistent with the few other plant ecological studies reported for the Pantanal. The accumulation of total mercury (HgT) andmethylmercury (MeHg) was evaluated in sediments ofTivoli South Bay, a freshwater tidal mudflat wetlandin the Hudson River National Estuarine ResearchReserve system. HgT concentrations in sedimentcores were measured to evaluate the spatialvariability of HgT deposition, and to establisha chronology of HgT accumulation. Cores takenfrom the northern, middle, and southern sections ofthe bay had similar distribution patterns andconcentrations of HgT, suggesting a common sourceof HgT throughout the bay. Sedimentconcentrations ranged from 190 to 1040 ng Hg g–1,2 to 10 times greater than concentrations expected insediments from non-anthropogenic sources. HgTdeposition rates were similar in different regions ofthe bay, and increased from 200 ng Hg cm–2yr–1in the 1930s to a maximum of 300 ngHg cm–2 yr–1 in the 1960s. Deposition rateshave steadily declined since the 1970s and arecurrently at 80 ng Hg cm–2 yr–1. Transportof HgT by tidal waters from the Hudson River islikely the main source of HgT in the bay.Distribution patterns and absolute concentrations ofMeHg in sediment cores were similar throughout thebay, with concentrations ranging from 0.43 to 2.95ng g–1. Maxima in MeHg concentration profilesoccurred just below the sediment-water interface andat a depth of 30 cm. The maximum at 30 cm wascoincident with maximum HgT concentrations. MeHgconcentrations in suspended particulate matter (SPM)from the Hudson River suggest that MeHg in the baycould be derived from riverine SPM rather than formedin situ.  相似文献

Mercury concentration [Hg] was assessed in 20 adult Allis shad Alosa alosa (54–59 cm) and 20 adult Twaite shad Alosa fallax (36–44 cm) collected during their spawning migration in the Dordogne and the Garonne rivers (France). [Hg] was measured in the gills, dorsal muscle, liver and kidney. Twaite shad exhibited higher [Hg] than Allis shad. Median [Hg] values were [Hg]Gills = 0.33 μg g−1 (dw), [Hg]Muscle = 1.22 μg g−1, [Hg]Liver = 1.99 μg g−1, [Hg]Kidney = 1.93 μg g−1 for Twaite shad and [Hg]Gills = 0.06 μg g−1, [Hg]Muscle = 0.20 μg g−1, [Hg]Liver = 1.18 μg g−1, [Hg]Kidney = 1.08 μg g−1 for Allis shad. In order to understand such differences, we investigated some life history traits of the two species: migratory history, age (3–6 years), size at age (an expression of growth) and the number of spawning events (0–2 events). The difference in estuarine residence time between the juveniles of both species, which was assumed to influence [Hg], was investigated using otolith Sr:Ca ratio. The microchemical analysis revealed a significant difference in the residence time of juveniles in the estuary (medians are 21 d and 10 d for Twaite shad and Allis shad, respectively) but this residence time seems too short to influence [Hg] (Allis shad: r spearman < 0.128; Twaite shad: r spearman < −0.340). As both species show the same age structure, the influence of age on [Hg] was negligible. The literature shows that the differences in growth and in the number of spawning events reported in our study are in favour of a higher [Hg] for Twaite shad than for Allis shad. Although trophic status was not investigated here, the literature reveals that it is another factor that could produce higher [Hg] in Twaite shad, since its diet includes higher trophic levels than Allis shad. Root respiration of kohlrabi (Brassica oleraceavar. gongylodes) was measured non-destructivelyin vivo by infrared gas analysis of completeroot systems, using potted plants in sand culture andnutrient solutions, for six weeks under (a) nutrientsufficiency, (b) deficiency of all mineral nutrients,(c) potassium deficiency or (d) phosphorus deficiency.This was to study the adaptation to nutrient stress interms of changes in root growth, root respiration,assimilate allocation and energy requirement fornutrient uptake. Both deficiencies of phosphorus andpotassium increased the root:shoot-ratio. This wasattributed to the plants transferring a largerrelative proportion of assimilates to the roots thanto the shoots relative to nutrient-sufficient plants.Roots of nutrient-sufficient kohlrabi respired 1.7 or7.7 mg CO2 h–1 per g fresh or dry matter, respectively. However, potassiumdeficiency enhanced root respiration to 2.4 mgCO2 h–1 or 12.2 mg CO2 h–1 on a per g fresh or dry weight basis respectively. This originated from an additional2.6 mg glucose g–1 dry matter h–1 allocated to the roots and provided 50 Joule additional energy(150 versus 100 Joule g–1 dry matter h–1)which may become available for the proposedK+:H+ symporter for potassium uptake.  相似文献

Surface waters, sediments and the polychaete Nereis diversicolor were sampled in the ScheldtEstuary between 1990 and 1994. In surface watersparticulate Hg (HgP) concentrations ranged from350–1610 ng g-1. They are essentiallycontrolled by physical mixing of polluted fluvialparticulates with relatively unpolluted marineparticulates, but unaffected by seasonal changes.Dissolved Hg species, on the other hand, show largeseasonal variations essentially controlled by theredox conditions in the estuary, as well as bybacterial and phytoplankton activity. Total dissolvedHg (HgTD) concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 3.0 ngl-1 with 10 to 90% as reactive Hg. Highconcentrations of HgTD are found in the upperestuary in the winter and decrease rapidly withincreasing salinity. In summer HgTDconcentrations are low in the anoxic upper estuary andincrease as oxygen is restored in the estuary.Significant variations were observed in dissolvedMonomethyl Hg (MMHg) concentrations withconcentrations ranging from 0.01 to 0.120 ng l-1 in the winter and 0.08 to 0.6 ng l-1 in summerand autumn. Particulate MMHg ranged from 2 to 6 ngg-1 in winter and from 4 to 10 ng g-1 insummer and accounted for 20 to 80% of the total MMHg.Hg° concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 0.130 ngl-1 and are higher in summer than in winter. Inthe lower estuary a positive correlation betweenHg° and phytoplankton pigments was observed. Sediments and the polychaete N. diversicolorwere sampled on the intertidal flat GrootBuitenschoor. Hg_T concentrations in surfacesediments ranged from 144 to 1890 ng g-1 and MMHgfrom 0.8 to 6 ng g-1 accounting for 0.4 to 0.8%of the total mercury present. Both total Hg (HgT)and MMHg concentrations increased with increasedorganic matter content and anoxic conditions. On theother hand, accumulation of HgT and MMHg washigher in N. diversicolor living in coarse grainsandy sediments than in muddy sediments. MMHgconcentrations in N. diversicolor ranged from2.2 to 20.9 ng g-1 accounting for an average of18% of the HgT. Seasonal variationssignificantly affected Hg speciation in sediments andN. diversicolor. Higher HgT concentrationswere found in the sediments in autumn and winter,whereas MMHg concentrations increased in spring andsummer. The combined effects of water activity (aw) and temperature on mycotoxin production by Penicilium commune (cyclopiazonic acid — CPA) and Aspergillus flavus (CPA and aflatoxins — AF) were studied on maize over a 14-day period using a statistical experimental design. Analysis of variance showed a highly significant interaction (P 0.001) between these factors and mycotoxin production. The minimum aw/temperature for CPA production (2264 ng g–1 P. commune, 709 ng g–1 A. flavus) was 0.90 aw/30 °C while greatest production (7678 ng g–1 P. commune, 1876 ng g–1 A. flavus) was produced at 0.98 aw/20 °C. Least AF (411 ng g–1) was produced at 0.90 aw/20 °C and most (3096 ng g–1) at 0.98 aw/30 °C.  相似文献

In its natural habitat, Microcebus murinus, a small malagasy prosimian primate, is exposed to seasonal shortage of water and resources. During the winter dry season, animals enter a pronounced fattening period with concurrent decrease in behavioural/physiological activities, whereas the breeding season is restricted to the rainy summer months. To determine the role of daylength on metabolic rate and water loss in this nocturnal primate, we measured body mass, oxygen consumption at 25°C (RMR), circadian water loss through urine output (UO) and evaporation (EWL) in eight males exposed to either short days (8L:16D SD) or long days (14L:10D LD), under controlled captive conditions. Exposure to SD led to a ponderal increase (maximal body mass: 125±4 g, N=8), and to significant changes in RMR and water loss, both reaching lowest values after 3 months under SD (0.84±0.04 ml O2 h−1 g−1 and 38±0.3 mg H2O g−1 day−1, respectively). Following exposure to LD, body mass decreased to 77±3 g (N=8), whereas both RMR and water loss, mainly through EWL, significantly increased (P<0.001), the highest value occurring after 2 months (1.51±0.08 ml O2 h.−1 g−1 and 87±7 mgH2O g−1 day−1, respectively). Moreover, independent of daylength, circadian changes in EWL were characterized by significantly reduced values during the diurnal rest. The results demonstrate that daylength variations affect the physiology of this tropical primate, allowing anticipatory adaptation to seasonal environmental constraints.  相似文献

Rates of O2 consumption and CO2 production, telemetered body temperature (Tb) and activity level were recorded from adult and subadult water shrews (Sorex palustris) over an air temperature (Ta) range of 3–32°C. Digesta passage rate trials were conducted before metabolic testing to estimate the minimum fasting time required for water shrews to achieve a postabsorptive state. Of the 228 metabolic trials conducted on 15 water shrews, 146 (64%) were discarded because the criteria for inactivity were not met. Abdominal Tb of S. palustris was independent of Ta and averaged 38.64±0.07°C. The thermoneutral zone extended from 21.2°C to at least 32°C. Our estimate of the basal metabolic rate for resting, postabsorptive water shrews (96.88±2.93 J g–1 h–1 or 4.84±0.14 ml O2 g–1 h–1) was three times the mass-predicted value, while their minimum thermal conductance in air (0.282±0.013 ml O2 g–1 h–1) concurred with allometric predictions. The mean digesta throughput time of water shrews fed mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) or ground meat was 50–55 min. The digestibility coefficients for metabolizable energy (ME) of water shrews fed stickleback minnows (Culaea inconstans) and dragonfly nymphs (Anax spp. and Libellula spp.) were 85.4±1.3% and 82.8±1.1%, respectively. The average metabolic rate (AMR) calculated from the gas exchange of six water shrews at 19–22°C (208.0±17.0 J g–1 h–1) was nearly identical to the estimate of energy intake (202.9±12.9 J g–1 h–1) measured for these same animals during digestibility trials (20°C). Based on 24-h activity trials and our derived ME coefficients, the minimum daily energy requirement of an adult (14.4 g) water shrew at Ta = 20°C is 54.0 kJ, or the energetic equivalent of 14.7 stickleback minnows.  相似文献

A survey of mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) contents was performed in fish collected from lakes located in two National Parks of the northern patagonian Andean range. Two native species, catfish (Diplomystes viedmensis) and creole perch (Percichthys trucha), and three introduced species, brown trout (Salmo trutta), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), were caught from lakes Nahuel Huapi, Moreno, Traful, Espejo Chico, and Guillelmo belonging to Nahuel Huapi National Park and from lakes Futalaufquen and Rivadavia, Los Alerces National Park. In lake Moreno, fish diet items were analyzed and rainbow trout grown in a farm. Hg and Se were measured in muscle and liver tissues by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The average concentrations in muscle of Hg for all species, ages, and lakes are between 0.4 to 1.0 μg g−1 dry weight (DW) with a few fish, mainly native, exceeding the United States Environmental Protection Agency health advisory for freshwater fish limited consumption, and from 0.8 to 1.5 μg g−1 DW for Se. Average concentrations in liver of Hg in all species range from 0.4 to 0.9 μg g−1 DW. Brown trout, the top predator in these lakes, showed the lowest average Hg burden in both tissues. Se concentrations in the liver of brown and rainbow trout, up to 279 μg g−1 DW, are higher than those expected for nearly pristine lakes, exceeding 20 μg g−1 DW, the threshold concentration associated with Se toxicity. These species show lower Hg contents in muscle, suggesting a possible detoxification of Hg by a Se-rich diet. Creole perch and velvet catfish livers have lower Se concentrations, with a narrower span of values (2.3 to 8.5 μg g−1 and 3.3 to 5.5 μg g−1 DW respectively).  相似文献

The thermoregulatory characteristics of three species of Cryptomys from Zambia and Angola are examined and, together with published data on four other species of Cryptomys from southern Africa, used to determine whether scaling occurs in this genus of subterranean rodents. The thermoregulatory properties of acclimated giant Zambian mole-rats, Cryptomys mechowi ( =267 g), Angolan mole-rats, Cryptomys bocagei ( =94 g) and Zambian common mole-rats Cryptomys hottentotus amatus ( =77 g) are as follows. Mean resting metabolic rates (RMRs) within the respective thermoneutral zones were 0.60±0.08 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 (n=12) for C. mechowi; 0.74±0.06 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 (n=8) for C. bocagei and 0.63±0.06 cm3O2 g-1 h-1 (n=21) for C. h. amatus. The thermoneutral zones (TNZs) of all three species are narrow: 29–30°C for C. mechowi; 31.5–32.5°C for C. bocagei and 28–32° C for C. h. amatus. The increase in mean RMR at the lowest temperatures tested (15° C for C. mechowi, 18° C for C. bocagei and C. h. amatus) was 2.35, 2.2 and 3.82 times their RMR in the TNZ respectively. Body temperatures are low, 34±0.53° C (n=24) for C. mechowi, 33.7±0.32° C (n=20) for C. bocagei and 33.8±0.43° C (n=40) for C. h amatus. At the lower limit of thermoneutrality, conductances are 0.09±0.01 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 °C-1 (n=30) in C. mechowi; 0.12±0.01 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 °C-1 (n=20) in C. bocagei and 0.12±0.03 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 °C-1 (n=32) in C. h. amatus. The range in mean body mass among the seven species of Cryptomys examined for scaling was 60 g (C. darlingi) to 267 g (C. mechowi). There is no clear relationship between RMR within the TNZ and body mass. The resultant relationship is represented by the power curve RMR=2.45 mass-0.259.  相似文献

To determine the contribution of food ingestion (trophic pathway) to PCB contamination of zooplankton in the river Meuse (Belgium), we used 14C-labelled algae (Dictyosphaerium ehrenbergianum) to measure ingestion and assimilation rates in the rotifer species Brachionus calyciflorus. When the concentration of algae in the culture medium varied from 20 103 to 200 103 algal cells ml–1 (0.12 to 1.18 mg Cl–1), the Brachionus calyciflorus ingestion rate varied from 0.25 ± 0.12 to 1.52 ± 0.43 ng C ind–1 h–1 at 15 °C and from 0.74 ± 0.17 to 5.93 ± 0.61 ng C ind–1 h–1 at 20 °C. The assimilation efficiency (ratio of the assimilation rate to the ingestion rate) measured in a culture medium containing 200 103 algal cells ml–1 was 55.7 ± 5.8%. Since the PCB concentration measured in the phytoplankton of the river Meuse is about 3 µg PCBs g–1 D.W., the estimated PCB contamination of zooplankton ascribable to the trophic pathway ranges from 0.22 ± 0.17 to 1.31 ± 0.77 µg PCBs g–1 D.W. at 15 °C and from 0.64 ± 0.34 to 5.10 ± 2.10 µg PCBs g–1 D.W. at 20°C. The lower figure based on measurements effected at 20 °C is comparable to the actual level measured in zooplankton samples collected in the river Meuse (0.69 ± 0.20 µg PCBs g–1 D.W.). The applicability of the formula used in our estimate was checked in a 48-hour in vitro experiment in which the rotifers were fed contaminated algae. The PCB accumulation measured in the rotifers was found to coincide with the calculated PCB contamination. Additional experiments were carried out to determine the contribution of the direct pathway to PCB contamination of zooplankton living in the river Meuse (0.02 µg PCBs l–1 of water; average dissolved organic matter: 3 mg C 1–1). The PCB concentration in zooplankton resulting from direct uptake of PCBs from the water was estimated at 0.19 ± 0.05 µg PCBs g–1 D.W. These results show that in zooplankton living in polluted ecosystems, PCBs are likely to accumulate via the trophic pathway to concentrations up to 30 times higher than by direct contamination. Furthermore, our estimates of PCB contamination via the trophic pathway coincide quite well with actual concentrations measured in situ.  相似文献

Abscisic acid (ABA) in extracts of somatic embryos and seeds of Gloryvine (Vitis vinifera L.xV. rupestris Scheele) was measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring using deuterated ABA, (±)-[C-3Me-2H3]ABA, ([2H3]ABA) as internal standard. The ABA content increased rapidly during embryogeny (0.035 ng/embryo at the globular stage to 0.22 ng/embryo at the mature stage). The level of ABA in the tissues of somatic embryos, expressed in ng/mg dry weight, decreased from the globular stage (0.76 ng/mg) to the mature stage (0.25 ng/mg). Chilling (4° C) induced normal germination of seeds and mature somatic embryos and precocious germination of globular, heart-shaped and torpedoshaped somatic embryos. In all cases chilling led to a marked reduction in endogenous ABA. Sugar cane bagasse hemicellulosic fraction was hydrolysed by treatment with 70 mg of sulphuric acid per gram of dry mass at 125 °C for 2 h. The hydrolysate was used as the substrate to grow Candida langeronii RLJ Y-019 at 42 °C; initial pH 6.0; stirring at 700 rev/min and aeration at 1.0 and 2.0 v/v/min. The utilization of D-xylose, L-arabinose, and acetic acid were delayed due to the presence of D-glucose, but after D-glucose depletion the other carbon sources were utilized. The kinetic parameters calculated for both cultivations at 1.0 and 2.0 v/v/min included: maximum specific growth rate (max) of 0.29 ± 0.01 h–1 and 0.43 ± 0.016 h–1, yields (Y x/s) of 0.36 ± 0.012 and 0.40 ± 0.012 gx/gs and productivity (Q x) of 0.81 ± 0.016 and 0.97 ± 0.012 gx/l/h, respectively, and compared favourably with published results obtained with Candida utilis and Geotrichum candidum. Candida langeronii appeared superior to C. utilis for biomass production from hemicellulose hydrolysate, in that it utilized L-arabinose and was capable of growth at higher temperatures. The biomass contained 48.2, 1.4, 5.8 and 23.4% of total protein, DNA, RNA and carbohydrate, respectively and contained essential amino acids for animal feed.  相似文献

Sixty surface sediment samples from the intertidal zone of Yantai Sishili Bay (YSB) have been analyzed for arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) to evaluate their contamination levels and potential ecological risks. Concentrations of As and Hg ranged from 7.01–23.56 and 0.00–0.01 μg g?1 in the dry season; during the wet season, the corresponding data were 1.44–6.17 and 0.00–0.02 μg g?1. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological risk index (Eri) were used to conduct a pollution assessment. The results demonstrated that the intertidal zone of YSB has good sediment quality and that As and Hg are not likely to cause negative environmental impacts in the region.  相似文献

Five subgroups of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were detected by PCR in three macrophyte rhizospheres (Polygonum densiflorum, Hymenachne donacifolia, and Ludwigia helminthorriza) and three subgroups in Eichhornia crassipes from La Granja, a floodplain lake from the upper Madeira basin. The SRB community varied according to the macrophyte species but with different degrees of association with their roots. The rhizosphere of the C4 plant Polygonum densiflorum had higher frequencies of SRB subgroups as well as higher mercury methylation potentials (27.5 to 36.1%) and carbon (16.06 ± 5.40%), nitrogen (2.03 ± 0.64%), Hg (94.50 ± 6.86 ng Hg g−1), and methylmercury (8.25 ± 1.45 ng Hg g−1) contents than the rhizosphere of the C3 plant Eichhornia crassipes. Mercury methylation in Polygonum densiflorum and Eichhornia crassipes was reduced when SRB metabolism was inhibited by sodium molybdate.  相似文献

Combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been used to identify indole-3-ethanol (IEt) in a purified extract from needles of Pinus sylvestris L. Quantitative estimates obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection, corrected for samples losses occurring during purification, indicate that Pinus needles contain 46±4 ng g-1 IEt. This compares with 24.5±6.5 ng g-1 indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 2.3±0.4 ng g-1 indole-3-carboxylic acid (ICA) (Sandberg et al. 1984, Phytochemistry, 23, 99–102). Metabolism studies with needles incubated in a culture medium in darkness revealed that both [3-14C]-tryptophan and [2-14C]tryptamine mine are converted to [14C]IEt. It was also shown that [3-14C]IEt acted as a precursor of [14C]IAA. The observed metabolism appears to be enzymic in nature. In cell-attached patches with pipette solution containing 100mm KCl, four major classes of K+ channels can be distinguished on the basis of their kinetic behavior and conductance: (1) 40% of the patches contained either voltage-independent (a) or hyperpolarization-activated (b), inward-rectifying channels with short mean open times (16 msec fora, and 8 msec forb). Some channels showed subconductance levels. The maximal inward conductanceg max was 31±5 pS (n=13) and the reversal potentialE rev was atV p=–34±6 mV (n=9). (2) 10% of the patches contained depolarization-activated and inward-rectifying channels withg max=40 ±18 pS (n=3) andE rev was atV p=–31±5 mV (n=3). With hyperpolarization, the channels open in bursts with rapid flickerings within bursts. Addition of carbachol (1mm) to the bath solution in cell-attached patches increased the open probabilityP o of these channels. (3) 10% of the patches contained voltage-independent inward-rectifying channels withg max=21±3 pS (n=4) andE rev was atV p=–24±9 mV (n=4). These channels exhibited very high open probability (P o=0.9) and long mean open time (1.6 sec) at the resting potential. (4) 20% of the patches contained voltage-independent channels with limiting inward conductance of 26±2 pS (n=3) andE rev atV p=–33±3 mV (n=3). The channels opened in bursts consisting of sequential activation of multiple channels with very brief mean open times (10 msec). In addition, channels with conductances less than 6 pS were observed in 20% of the patches. In all nine experiments with K+ in the pipette solution replaced by Na+, unitary currents were outward, and inward currents were observed only for large hyperpolarizing potentials. This indicates that the channels are more selective for K+ over Na+ and Cl. A variety of K+ channels contributes to the basolateral K+ conductance of resting oxyntic cells.  相似文献

The abscisic-acid (ABA) content of roots of the carotenoid-deficient w-3, vp-5, and vp-7 mutants of Z. mays was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with an analysis sensitivity of 6 ng ABA g–1 fresh weight (FW). Roots of normal seedlings of the same lines were characterized by the following amounts of ABA (as ng ABA g–1 FW,±standard deviation): w-3, 279±43; vp-5, 237±26; vp-7, 338±61. We did not detect any ABA in roots of any of the mutants. Thus, the lack of carotenoids in these mutants correlated positively with the apparent absence of ABA. Primary roots of normal and mutant seedlings were positively gravitropic, with no significant differences in the curvatures of roots of normal as compared with mutant seedlings. These results indicate that ABA 1) is synthesized in maize roots via the carotenoid pathway, and 2) is not necesary for positive gravitropism by primary roots of Z. mays.Abbreviation ABA abscisic acid  相似文献

The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is threatened by large-scale habitat loss, in particular due to conversion to agricultural land. This is the first published study on maned wolf density and the first test of individual identification from camera-trap photographs. We present results from two Brazilian regions: the Cerrado and the Pantanal. Using capture–recapture analysis of camera-trap data, we estimated densities per 100 square kilometers of 3.64 ± 0.77 individuals at the Cerrado site and 1.56 ± 0.77 individuals at the Pantanal site. Parallel radio-telemetry studies at the Pantanal site showed that maned wolves occupied home ranges of 39–58 km2 (mean = 50.3 ± 7.67 km2). Our study in the Cerrado took place in a private farm with a mixture of agricultural land and native habitats, representative of the majority of the present-day Cerrado. Whereas many other mammalian species have suffered in the region, our results show that the maned wolf may cope better with this highly fragmented landscape than one might have feared. Ten-d-old seedlings of Zea mays L. cv. Tx 5855 treated with 1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-(3-[trifluoromethyl]phenyl)-4-(1H)-pyridinone (Fluridone) were analyzed for abscisic acid (ABA) content using high-performance liquid chromatography with an analysis sensitivity of 2.5 ng ABA g-1 fresh weight (FW). Seedlings were divided into three portions: leaves, detipped roots, and root tips (terminal 1.5 mm). Control plants (water treatment only; no Fluridone) were characterized by the following amounts of ABA: leaves, 0.114±0.024 (standard deviation) g ABA g-1 FW; detipped roots, 0.260±0.039±g ABA g-1 FW; root tips, no ABA detected. We did not detect any ABA in tissues of Fluridone-treated plants. Primary roots of treated and untreated seedlings were strongly graviresponsive, with no significant differences between the curvatures or the growth rates of primary roots of Fluridone-treated and control seedlings.
