The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malaria infection and antibodies against the repetitive epitopes of the circumsporozoite (CS) proteins of Plasmodium falciparum, P. malariae, P. vivax VK210, P. vivax VK247, and P. vivax-like in individuals living in the states of Rond?nia, Pará, Mato Grosso, Amazonas, and Acre. Active malaria transmission was occurring in all studied sites, except in Acre. P. falciparum was the predominant species in Pará and Rond?nia and P. vivax in Mato Grosso. Infection by P. malariae was low but this Plasmodium species was detected in Rond?nia (3.5%), Mato Grosso (2.5%), and Pará (0.8%). High prevalence and levels of serological reactivity against the CS repeat peptides of P. falciparum were detected in Rond?nia (93%) and Pará (85%). Sera containing antibodies against the CS repeat of P. malariae occurred more frequently in Rond?nia (79%), Pará (76%), and Amazonas (68%). Antibodies against the repeat epitope of the standard CS protein of P. vivax VK210, P. vivax VK247, and P. vivax-like were more frequent in Rond?nia, Pará, and Mato Grosso. The high frequency of reactions to P. malariae in most of the areas suggests that the infection by this Plasmodium species has been underestimated in Brazil.  相似文献

Sand flies were collected in the central region of the state of Rond?nia (W 64 degrees 30' to 63 degrees 00' and S 10 degrees 00'to 11 degrees 00') using Shannon and CDC light traps from October 1997 to August 2000. A total of 85,850 specimens representing 78 named species were captured. Of these 14 were new records for Rond?nia. The proportion of males/females was 1/1.131. Trypanosomatids, that are presently being identified, were detected in 11 species. Leishmania (Viannia) naiffi was recorded from Psychodopygus davisi and P. hirsutus. In the present study the dominant species was P. davisi (39.6%) followed by Lutzomyia whitmani (13.1%), P. carrerai (11.6%), and P. hirsutus (10.2%). The importance of P. davisi as a vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis is discussed.  相似文献

The present case report refers to a patient from the State of Rond?nia, North region of Brazil, attended with clinical suspicion of hepatic echinococcosis. Examination by imaging (ultrasonography and computerized tomography) revealed a conglomerate of cystic lesions, with mobile contents within the cyst. The serology (immunoblot) for Echinococcus sp. was positive (21 and 31 kDa bands). This case is the first reported in Rond?nia, suggesting the need to investigate the polycystic echinococcosis in individuals with hepatic cysts from areas of tropical forest and hunting habits where wild life was present as wild dogs, cats and rodents, particularly Agouti paca (paca) and Dasyprocta aguti (agouti).  相似文献

Adults of Cephalonomia stephanoderis Betrem were detected (in November 2003) during the sampling of Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner berries damaged by Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) in Ouro Preto D'Oeste - Rond?nia, Brazil (10 degrees 45'S and 62 degrees 15'W). From January to July 2004, the parasitoid was monthly sampled in 200 berries damaged by H. hampei. Probably, C. stephanoderis can already exert some parasitism pressure at the coffee berry borer population. The occurrence of this parasitoid in natural conditions points out to another alternative for the biological control of the H. hampei in Rond?nia. This is the first record of C. stephanoderis in coffee plantations of the Brazilian Amazonia.  相似文献

Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) oswaldoi (Peryassú, 1922) s. l., which has been incriminated as a potential human malaria vector in Western Brazilian Amazon, may constitute a cryptic species complex. However, the most recent study with isozymes indicated high similarity among samples from the States of Acre, Amazonas and Rond?nia in the Brazilian Amazon. In the present study, 45 individuals were sequenced from Sena Madureira (State of Acre), Coari (State of Amazonas), S?o Miguel (State of Rond?nia), and Moju (State of Pará), using the cytochrome oxidase I gene from mitochondrial DNA. Twenty-five haplotypes were identified in the four localities, and no haplotype was shared among them. The lowest haplotype number was detected in the Coari sample. The dendrogram based on maximum parsimony analysis yielded four groups: I) haplotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 from Sena Madureira and haplotypes 17 and 18 from S?o Miguel; II) haplotypes 13 to 16 and 19 to 22 from S?o Miguel; III) haplotypes 23 to 25 from Moju, and IV) haplotypes 6 to 9 from Sena Madureira and haplotypes 10 to 12 from Coari. The genetic distance (uncorrected p) obtained among the four groups ranged from 0.08 to 5.3%, whereas the highest values (4.97 to 5.3%) were found between groups I (Sena Madureira) and III (Moju). Based on male genitalia identification, it was suggested that group I may be A. oswaldoi s. s. whereas group IV may be A. konderi. Groups II and III could constitute other lineages or species within A. oswaldoi s. l., whose taxonomic status remains to be clarified. These results suggest that additional studies are necessary using samples of A. oswaldoi s. l. from a larger geographic area.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analysis of all 31 described mitochondrial (cytochrome b) haplotypes of Lutzomyia whitmani demonstrated that new material from the State of Rond?nia, in southwest Amaz?nia, forms a clade within a lineage found only in the rain-forest regions of Brazil. This rain-forest lineage also contains two other clades of haplotypes, one from eastern Amaz?nia and one from the Atlantic forest zone of northeast Brazil (including the type locality of the species in Ilhéus, State of Bahia). These findings do not favour recognizing two allopatric cryptic species of L. whitmani, one associated with the silvatic transmission of Leishmania shawi in southeast Amaz?nia and the other with the peridomestic transmission of Le. braziliensis in northeast Brazil. Instead, they suggest that there is (or has been in the recent past) a continuum of inter-breeding populations of L. whitmani in the rain-forest regions of Brazil.  相似文献

A small riverine community, Portuchuelo (8 degrees 37'S, 63 degrees 49'W), and a rural county, Monte Negro (10 degrees 15'S, 63 degrees 18'W), both in the state of Rond?nia, Brazil, were studied for the purposes of ascertaining health conditions and the causes of the variability of some infectious diseases. The sample included 181 inhabitants of Portuchuelo and 924 of Monte Negro. Data on 11 blood polymorphisms (ABO, Rh, MNSs, Kell, Fy, haptoglobin, hemoglobin, ACP1, PGM1, GLO1, and CA2) were used to determine the ethnic composition of the inhabitants of Portuchuelo and Monte Negro. The contributions of Africans, Amerindians, and Europeans to the ethnic composition of the studied populations were, respectively, 0.21 +/- 0.046, 0.44 +/- 0.064, and 0.35 +/- 0.069 in Portuchuelo; and 0.25 +/- 0.032,0.12 +/- 0.046, and 0.63 +/- 0.054 in Monte Negro.  相似文献

A malaria control pilot project was developed in the Urupá agro-industrial farm that is situated in the State of Rond?nia (Western Amazon Region, Brazil). Around 180 inhabitants had been surveyed for the past five years. The control measures were based on (1) training a community agent to perform on the spot microscopical diagnosis of malaria and to treat the uncomplicated cases of malaria; (2) limiting the use of insecticides to a short period before the high transmission season. This resulted in a significant reduction in the time between the onset of clinical symptoms and specific chemotherapy which fell from 3.5 to 1.3 days. In relation to the previous three reference years the total number of malaria cases was reduced to 50% in the first year and to 25% in the second year. The introduction of these measures coincided with pronounced reduction in the frequency of Plasmodium falciparum infections but this was less marked for P. vivax infections. In the second year of the pilot experiment there was no P. falciparum transmission on the farm. During the last decade there was a general decrease in the endemicity of malaria in the State of Rond?nia. The linear regression coefficient values indicate that the decline was more pronounced in Urupá than in the general municipality and that the falciparum malaria API in Urupá farm is significantly lower than in the general municipality of Candeias were the farm is situated.  相似文献

One hundred and thirty cases of diarrhea and 43 age-matched controls, 0 to 5 years old, were studied in a pediatric outpatient unit from a poor peri urban area of Porto Velho, Rond?nia. Eighty percent of diarrheal cases were observed in the groups under 2 years of age. Rotavirus (19.2%) was the most frequent enteropathogen associated with diarrhea, followed by Shigella flexneri (6.15%) and S. sonnei (1.5%) and Salmonella sp. (6.9%). Four cases of E. coli enterotoxigenic infections (3.1%), E. coli enteropathogenic (EPEC)(2.3%) one case of E. coli enteroinvasive infection (0.8%) and one case of Yersinia enterocolitica (0.8%) were also identified. Mixed infections were frequent, associating rotavirus, EPEC and Salmonella sp. with Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia.  相似文献

Anopheles darlingi is the most important malaria vector in Central and South America. After a dramatic reduction of malaria cases in the whole Brazilian territory, with the lowest abundance being attained by 1970, the disease resurged in the Amazon region, where it is now a great public health concern. Consequently, better knowledge about vector species became urgent. We examined the genetic diversity and population structure of A. darlingi, sampled in four localities in the State of Rond?nia, Brazil, using 139 amplified fragment length polymorphism marker loci. In each locality, samples were collected in two environments: a peri-domicile one (in the balconies of houses) and an extra-domicile environment (about 15 m from the house). Estimates of expected heterozygosity, Shannon diversity index and percentage of polymorphic loci showed medium to high values, with the samples from the areas closer to Porto Velho exhibiting the smallest values. There was evidence of small population differences, evaluated by F(st), genetic distance and analysis of molecular variance. Comparison between peri- and extra-domicile samples showed greater values of F(st) and genetic distance than between pairs of localities, indicating influence of environmental conditions on the genetics of populations.  相似文献

Leishmania naiffi was isolated from 10 out of 64 armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) examined in Amazonas, Pará and Rond?nia States in the Brazilian Amazon Region. The isolates were obtained in culture from samples of liver (3), spleen (3), lymph nodes (2), skin (1) and blood (1) from the infected animals. Heavy infections with the same parasite were detected for the first time in Psychodopygus squamiventris, a common man-biting phlebotomine, in Amazonas and Pará. A new case of cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. naiffi is described from the Manaus area, making a total of three known cases of human infection by this parasite.  相似文献

Two hundred twenty-one individuals from four groups located around the Brazilian town of Porto Velho, Rond?nia, were studied in relation to four sites located within or near the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. The allele frequencies, when considered individually, do not depart markedly from frequencies obtained from other populations of mainly European descent. However, when haplotypes were estimated, two of the groups departed markedly from other Brazilian and non-Brazilian samples. This finding is probably related to the complex multiethnic origin of these groups.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies were conducted on malaria in three rural areas of the Amazon basin in the State of Rond?nia: the town of Costa Marques, Forte Principe da Beira (Fort), and an immigrant settlement in the nearby forest. These studies were instituted to document the malaria problem and to describe the role of immigration on its distribution and prevalence. Hospital records in the town show that the number of malaria cases increased five fold from 1983 to 1987 and that the predominant malaria parasite changed from Plasmodium vivax to P. falciparum. Increased malaria followed increased immigration and colonization of the forest. A series of epidemiologic studies suggested the linkage between malaria and immigration as the prevalence of malaria was 1-2% at the Fort, a stable community, 8-9% at Costa Marques, a growing community, and 14-26% in the new settlements in the forest.  相似文献

A sample of Biomphalaria amazonica from Porto Velho, Rond?nia state, was exposed to miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni (SJ2 strain) from S?o José dos Campos, S?o Paulo state (five miracidia per snail). Water freshly taken from the snails' breeding place was used to make sure that its quality was compatible with hatching of miracidia and their penetration into the snails. The resulting infection rate was 3.5%, as against 45% in B. tenagophila controls. In comparison with the controls, B. amazonica, besides a lower infection rate, showed a longer prepatent period and a lower cercarial production. These characteristics seem to indicate that it is a poor host of S. mansoni, like B. straminea, but it should be considered that, this notwithstanding, the latter is admittedly a good vector of the parasite in hyperendemic areas of northeastern Brazil. These results point to the possibility of introduction of schistosomiasis mansoni into the western Amazonian region, where B. amazonica is widespread.  相似文献

Narratives addressing the presence of European domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) in the encounters between Indians and non-Indians in the conquest of the Central and South American lowlands often portray those animals as terrible and bloodthirsty weapons. From the settlers’ perspective, dogs were formidable instruments in the subjugation of the native peoples they came across at various times over more than 500 years of American colonialization. But the indigenous narratives of these first contacts with dogs may exhibit distinct perspectives that view dogs not only as weapons, instruments, or tools of conquest but rather as agents or actors smoothing contact and establishing peaceful relations between Indians and non-Indians. This article explores the narratives of the first dogs encountered by two native populations in southwestern Brazilian Amazonia—the Puruborá and the Karitiana in the state of Rondônia—to demonstrate the canine agency behind the interethnic meetings in this region, where dogs were largely absent until the arrival of the Europeans and their descendants beginning in the sixteenth century. First contacts between Indians and non-Indians are complex inter-specific events, and may extend beyond only two participants (a group of non-Indians and a native people) to include at least three parties, since the actions and dispositions of dogs play a crucial role in the development of human interactions. Recollections of the first dogs encountered by the Puruborá and Karitiana point precisely toward recognizing the importance of the animal's presence as an actor, far beyond a mere instrument.  相似文献

During a survey of ticks on horses in November 2000, at the University of S?o Paulo farm in Pirassununga county, S?o Paulo, Brazil, 1 gynandromorph of Amblyomma cajennense was collected from a naturally infested horse. In another survey on dogs in March 2001, in the urban area of Monte Negro, Rond?nia, Brazil, a gynandromorph of Rhipicephalus sanguineus was collected from a naturally infested dog. Both specimens are described and classified as perfect bipartite protogynanders.  相似文献

Antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii were assayed in sera of 266 humans from 71 farms located at Rond?nia State, Western Amazon, Brazil, by the modified agglutination test (MAT) and the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Antibodies were found in 195 humans (73.3%), with MAT titers of 1:25 in 11, 1:50 in 11, 1:100 in 16, 1:200 in 27, 1:400 in 38, 1:800 in 37, 1:1,600 in 22, and 1:3,200 or higher in 33. From the 71 farms visited, 69 had seropositive humans. Prevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies increased with age of the people (P < 0.05), and no difference was observed in the occurrence by gender (P > 0.05). A sanitary questionnaire was applied in each farm, and statistical association between the serologic status and several variables were analyzed. Home-grown vegetable consumption and origin of drinking water (well or river) were the independent variables that displayed significant association (P = 0.002 and 0.02, respectively). Higher values of occurrence were found in people with consumption of home-grown vegetables (76.1%) and people that drink well water (75.4%) compared with people that did not consume this type of food (61.9%) and drink river water (55.2%). By IFAT (> or = 1:16), 194 of 266 (73%) humans were seropositive and there was a good correlation between MAT and IFAT.  相似文献

Some demographic and epidemiological patterns of the rural population of Monte Negro, locality situated in the State of Rond?nia (Brazil), Western Amazonia, are described based on a sample of 924 randomly selected individuals, approximately 10% of the whole population. The main features of this sample are (1) the illiteracy rates in the parental generation were 23% for fathers and 20% for mothers. Among children, this figure dropped to 6%; (2) housing in Monte Negro is characterized by being constructed with wood (92%), and also a floor (75%). Nevertheless, only 32% of these houses had electric energy; (3) the mean ages for the parental generation were 41.9 for males and 36.3 for females. These values for the offspring generation were 12.2 and 10.5, respectively; (4) the sex-ratio of the offspring generation was 1.32;(5) the bioassay of kinship was estimated as.033 for this long range migrant population; (6) the prevalence of some macrophage dependent infectious disease was conspicuously high; (7) the reported number of malarial episodes among males and females was statistically different, suggesting that malaria may be, in part, a "professional" disease; (8) the prevalence of serum-positive reactions against B-hepatitis is distressing. It has a strong age dependence and reaches 74% among adult males. Conversely, signs of active infection (AgHbs) rises to 16% among children.  相似文献

The evolution of malaria in Brazil, its morbidity, the malaria control programs, and the new challenges for these programs in the light of the emergence of asymptomatic infection in the Amazon region of Brazil were reviewed. At least six Brazilian research groups have demonstrated that asymptomatic infection by Plasmodium is an important impediment to malaria control, among mineral prospectors in Mato Grosso and riverside communities in Rond?nia and, in our group, in the middle and upper reaches of the Negro river, in the state of Amazonas. Likewise, other researchers have studied the problem among indigenous communities in the Colombian, Peruvian, and Venezuelan parts of the Amazon basin, adjacent to Brazil. The frequency of positive results from the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) among asymptomatic individuals has ranged from 20.4 to 49.5%, and the presence of Plasmodium in the thick blood smears, from 4.2 to 38.5%. Infection with Anopheles darlingi has also been demonstrated by xenodiagnosis among asymptomatic patients with positive PCR results. If a mean of 25% is taken for the asymptomatic infection caused by Plasmodium sp. in the Amazon region of Brazil, malaria control will be difficult to achieve in that region with the measures currently utilized for such control.  相似文献

Amblyomma varium, commonly known in Brazil as the "carrapato-gigante-da-pregui a" (sloth's giant tick) is found from southern Central America to Argentina. The present study adds information on the geographical distribution of A. varium, as well as on their hosts, based on material deposited in the main Brazilian collections and on the available literature. Eighty-two vials, containing 191 adult specimens, deposited in five Acari collections between 1930 and 2001, were examined. These vials included data on the host and collection localities. The biology of A. varium is unknown. However it is known that, during the adult stage, the tick presents a high host specificity and is found almost exclusively on the sloths Bradypus tridactylus, B. variegatus, B.torquatus (Bradypodidae), Choloepus hoffmanni and C. didactylus (Megalonychidae). Based on the material examined, the states of Rond nia, Amazonas, Bahia and Alagoas are newly assigned to geographic distribution of A. varium in Brazil.  相似文献
