Time patterns of activity-rest rhythms during and after pregnancy are increasingly recognised as important factors for the well-being and health of young families. This longitudinal study examined activity-rest patterns of couples during late pregnancy and subsequently the alterations in the periodic structure of parental and neonatal time patterns during the first four months after birth. Part I concentrates on the effects of late pregnancy and birth to the mother's rest-activity patterns and those of the father and, after birth, what time pattern the infant developed. Part II attempts to clarify how activity patterns of the entire family agree or disagree with each other and investigates how the infant synchronises with the environment that includes the process of parent-infant interaction. Activity data of, so far, seven families (father, mother and child) were continuously recorded using non-invasive Actiwatch units. Recordings of parental activity started at the beginning of the 37th week of gestation, and were continued in parallel with the infants' recordings in three series of three weeks each until four months after birth: 1st to 3rd week, 7th to 9th week and 13th to 15th week of life. In a standardised diary, record was kept of household routines, parental activities, type of feeding, initiation of sleep or waking up. Activity data of seven non-pregnant women were collected and used as a control. Irregular nocturnal activity epochs occurred frequently in pregnant women and were absent in non-pregnant women. Period lengthenings and shortenings of the circadian rhythms appeared in both parents from prepartum to postpartum. Activity at night increased from prepartum to postpartum in mothers and fathers. Three infants showed a marked circadian rhythm between day 3 and 14 after birth. All seven infants showed a predominant circadian rhythm between day 8 and 19 after birth. The onset of daytime activity of mothers and their infants corresponded well to each other. Postpartum frequency spectra of parents and child always had some ultradian components in common. Time patterns of activity-rest rhythms of couples and parents are shown to be altered during and after pregnancy and we suggest that the infants' adaptation to the environment begins during the first week that includes the process of mother-infant interaction.  相似文献

In several primate species, males have been shown to exhibit a surge in circulating testosterone during the early postnatal period. This surge has been postulated to play a role in the development of sex differences in behavior. In this study, the role of postnatal testosterone in infant behavioral development was investigated in socially living rhesus macaques. Seven male infants were treated with a GnRH agonist, avorelin, from the first week of life onwards. Ten female infants were exposed to testosterone by implantation of capsules containing testosterone. The behavioral development of these and control infants was recorded from birth to 6 months of age. The sexually dimorphic patterns of play and mounting were not affected by manipulation of postnatal testosterone in either male or female infants. Similarly, most mother-infant interactions were not affected by the hormonal manipulation of infants. Mothers of testosterone-treated females were found to take more responsibility for moving into and out of arm's reach of their infants than mothers of some other groups of infants; however, this measure did not normally differ between mothers of male and female infants. Manipulation of the postnatal testosterone surge does significantly affect penile growth and development, but does not affect the expression of infant sex differences in behavior nor greatly affect the development of the mother-infant relationship in rhesus macaques.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal tracts of neonates are colonized by bacteria immediately after birth. It has been discussed that the intestinal microbiota of neonates includes strains transferred from the mothers. Although some studies have indicated possible bacterial transfer from the mother to the newborn, this is the first report confirming the transfer of bifidobacteria at the strain level. Here, we investigated the mother-to-infant transmission of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum by genotyping bacterial isolates from the feces of mothers before delivery and of their infants after delivery. Two hundred seven isolates from 8 pairs of mothers and infants were discriminated by multilocus sequencing typing (MLST) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis. By both methods, 11 strains of B. longum subsp. longum were found to be monophyletic for the feces of the mother and her infant. This finding confirms that these strains were transferred from the intestine of the mother to that of the infant. These strains were found in the first feces (meconium) of the infant and in the feces at days 3, 7, 30, and 90 after birth, indicating that they stably colonize the infant's intestine immediately after birth. The strains isolated from each family did not belong to clusters derived from any of the other families, suggesting that each mother-infant pair might have unique family-specific strains.  相似文献

In many primate species a close attachment between mother and infant provides a secure base for the infant when the infant is frightened or under stress. In cooperatively breeding primates infant carrying is divided among several individuals in the group, with the mother often doing little more than nursing. In these species it is not clear which individual would best serve as a secure base for the infant. We studied eight infant cotton-top tamarins from birth through 20 weeks of age, noting who carried the infant during the first 100 days, who transferred food with the infants, and, as infants became independent, with whom they associated during social play and affiliative behavior. From week 9 to week 20, when infants were independent of carriers most of the time, we presented families with six trials (once every 2 weeks) with a threatening stimulus (a human dressed in a lab coat and wearing an animal mask). Infants played primarily with their twin or youngest sibling and had affiliative interactions with many family members. However, in fearful situations, infants ran to those who had carried them and transferred food with them the most-their father or oldest brother (never to the mother). Although adults increased rates of mobbing calls in response to the threat, infants significantly reduced their vocalization rate. For these cooperatively breeding monkeys, the attachment object for infants is the family member that invested the most effort in carrying the infant and transferring food with the infant. These results parallel and extend results from bi-parental infant care species in which the father serves as the primary attachment figure.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe patterns of infant care and development in family groups of the monogamous titi (Callicebus moloch). Three infant titis were observed with their natal family groups over the first six months of life. Field observations of extensive male involvement with infants were confirmed. Adult males were clearly the infants' primary social companions, and infants spent more time in contact with adult males at all ages than with mothers or older siblings. However, mothers and siblings also carried infants at times and interacted with them in affiliative ways (e.g., grooming, nuzzling, play). Mothers often invited nursing, but otherwise it was infants who primarily initiated transfers between carriers and approaches to parents, reminding us that the infants' own activities and their effects on caregivers should not be overlooked in considerations of the patterns of infant care. This is particularly important for those species exhibiting extensive parental involvement by males. It is suggested that substantial male care of young titi infants leads to several important consequences for the infant's social development, including the development of a stronger attachment to the father than the mother.  相似文献

The quality of mother-infant interaction in a sample of 25 drug-addicted mothers and their infants was measured over the first 9 postnatal months. Interaction quality was assessed at 1, 4, 6, and 9 months in feeding and teaching contexts using the Nursing Child Assessment Feeding and Teaching Scales. At each month, maternal and infant totals in this sample were below the 10th percentile established for the normative population. Over time, infant interaction in both feeding and teaching contexts improved, whereas maternal interaction remained unchanged. Even with this improvement in interaction quality for the infants, the mean scores for the sample remained in the high-risk range. In general, the results of this study indicate that in drug-affected dyads, both mother and infant contribute to impaired interaction quality. These deficits appear early and persist through 9 postnatal months, appearing in feeding and teaching contexts.  相似文献

Objectives

Very preterm infants are known to be at risk of developmental disabilities and behavioural disorders. This condition is supposed to alter mother-infant interactions. Here we hypothesize that the parental coping with the very preterm birth may greatly influence mother-infant interactions.

Methods

100 dyads were included in 3 university hospitals in France. Preterm babies at higher risk of neurodevelopmental sequelae (PRI>10) were excluded to target the maternal determinants of mother-infant interaction. We report the follow-up of this cohort during 1 year after very preterm birth, with regular assessment of infant somatic state, mother psychological state and the assessment of mother-infant interaction at 12 months by validated scales (mPPQ, HADS, EPDS, PRI, DDST and PIPE).

Results

We show that the intensity of post-traumatic reaction of the mother 6 months after birth is negatively correlated with the quality of mother-infant interaction at 12 months. Moreover, the anxious and depressive symptoms of the mother 6 and 12 months after birth are also correlated with the quality of mother-infant interaction at 12 months. By contrast, this interaction is not influenced by the initial affective state of the mother in the 2 weeks following birth. In this particular population of infants at low risk of sequelae, we also show that the quality of mother-infant interaction is not correlated with the assessment of the infant in the neonatal period but is correlated with the fine motor skills of the baby 12 months after birth.

Conclusions

This study suggests that mothers’ psychological condition has to be monitored during the first year of very preterm infants’ follow-up. It also suggests that parental interventions have to be proposed when a post-traumatic, anxious or depressive reaction is suspected.  相似文献

Adult males in nonhuman primate societies exhibit a wide range of behaviors toward immature members of their social group, ranging from virtually continuous nurturance to systematic infanticide. Among macaques, rhesus monkey males in the wild display perhaps the least degree of paternalistic behavior toward conspecific infants. But adult male-infant rhesus attachments have not as yet been explored in a controlled longitudinal study, even though the mother-infant bond has received careful attention for several decades. In the present study two pairs of adult male and infant rhesus macaques were housed together without the mother for a period of at least seven months. To minimize the probability of physical harm to the infants, one adult male was present at the birth of the infant with whom it was paired and the other was visually familiarized with the infant for several weeks before being paired with it. Both pairs have shown much less ventral-ventral contact than mother-infant pairs and the infants have rarely attempted to gain nipple contact. The female infant now initiates and maintains ventral-ventral contact much more frequently than the male infant in spite of the higher degree of aggression directed toward her by the male. The adults frequently groom their infants and exhibit varying degrees of both tolerance and aggression. Rough-and-tumble play appeared quite early in both pairs and is much more vigorous than mother-infant play. Recently the male-male pair has exhibited reciprocal mounting and thrusting. Comparisons are made with data obtained in an earlier study of mother-infant pairs conducted under nearly identical experimental circumstances. The effects of separating the adult males and infants at seven months are also described.  相似文献

The prolonged nursing period and strong, extended mother-infant bond observed among bottlenose dolphins may reflect social and physical ontogeny critical for infant survival. This study was conducted to quantify ontogentic changes in mother-infant contact time and the amount of time infants spent in specific spatial states with their mothers from birth to age 12 mo. These behaviors were studied through a systematic, longitudinal study of six mother-infant pairs of captive bottlenose dolphins from three different social groups. There was a significant decrease in the time infants spent with their mothers (logistic regression, P < 0.001), following the general mammalian pattern of increasing independence with age. When with their mothers, the probability that infants would be found in “echelon” position, flanking the mother, decreased as the calf aged (logistic regression, P <0.001), possibly due to anatomical and hydrodynamic factors. The probability that infants would be found in “infant” position, underneath the mother, increased with calf age (logistic regression, P < 0.001). Results obtained in this study are consistent with similar studies of wild bottlenose dolphin mother-infant pairs, indicating a suite of ontogenetically comparable behaviors between wild and captive bottlenose dolphins.  相似文献

The mother-infant bond in bottlenose dolphins is critical to infant survival and has been reported to last from 3-10 years in both captive and wild populations. Little information on mother-infant communication during early development has been collected. This paper reports on a newly discovered dolphin vocalization, termed thunk, which is predominantly used by mothers toward infants. Four mother-infant pairs and one aunt-infant pair were the subjects for this study. Methods included a focal animal sampling technique using 2.5 min interval and event/continuous sampling regimes on audio- or videotape. Results indicated that thunks are produced by mothers or aunting females during infant departures (distances greater than 5 feet) and are frequently followed by disciplinary activity by the mother or aunt. In addition, thunks appeared to cease at approximately 9-10 months after birth, concurrent with a decrease in infant dependence. Thunks also were analyzed acoustically for frequency and duration parameters. Thunks have a harmonic structure with an energy peak in the 273–350 Hz range and ranged from 129–5,556 Hz in frequency and from 21–171 ms in duration. They appear to function as aggressive contact vocalizations produced by mothers and other adult females toward infants in order to maintain infant proximity. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Goeldi's monkey (Callimico goeldii) is closely related to marmosets and tamarins. Like marmosets and tamarins, C. goeldii lives in family groups, and fathers and older offspring (helpers) participate in infant carrying. In contrast to the typical twin births in marmosets and tamarins, C. goeldii has only single offspring, and paternal carrying is delayed. We studied infant carrying following 26 births in eight groups of C. goeldii, testing hypotheses proposed in the literature on infant carrying in marmosets and tamarins. The infant was carried exclusively by the mother for the first 26.3 days after birth. Afterwards other group members participated in infant carrying. Whereas the C. goeldii mother is always the main carrier, the father does not always carry more than helpers. In contrast to other callitrichids, age and sex of sibling helpers was not found to have an effect on the participation in infant carrying. The participation in infant carrying in Callimico indicated intraindividual consistency, i.e., the amount of infant carrying performed by fathers and helpers following one birth correlated significantly with the amount of infant carrying of the same individuals following the next birth. We found a significant negative correlation between parental infant carrying and group size, indicating that helpers really do help, sharing the carrying burden with their parents. This is attributed to a clear trend for a reduction in maternal carrying in the presence of helpers, whereas fathers did not benefit from helpers. We conclude that the infant-carrying pattern in C. goeldii is different from the infant-carrying pattern in marmosets and tamarins. The main differences were that the mother instead of the father is the main carrier, and that there is a clear time delay between infant birth and when the father and helpers participate in infant carrying.  相似文献

Development was observed as three infant sets were born into a semi-naturalistic family group. Data on infant carrying through 12 weeks of age revealed that, at almost every week, the father carried more than the mother, and the males carried more than the females. Spatial data for the first two infant sets showed nearest neighbor distances supporting a two-stage proximity process during development. Behavioral data for 30 weeks were rather variable between the first two infant sets; this suggests that infant behavioral patterns may be more dependent upon the composition of the group than is spatial development or infant carrying. Incidents of “play fathering» and the importance of parental care and infant development in general were discussed.  相似文献

Captive colonies of cotton top tamarins experience a high rate of rejection of infants within the 1st week of life. The rates of rejection and survival to maturity (2 or more years) among 659 live colony-born infants were correlated with rearing, birth group, litter size, season of birth, gender, origin of parents, experience of parents raising siblings, parity and age of parents, and experience of parent pairs. The most important factors associated with low rejection rates were family life and parental experience raising infants. Infants born into family groups or reared in families were rejected at a significantly lower rate. Rejection of infants whose sires were raised with siblings was significantly lower. Paternal experience was more important than maternal experience. Litter size had no effect on rejection of infants born to family groups, whereas, rejection of triplets was significantly higher than twins or singles among those born to parents alone. Rejection was significantly higher among primiparous births than multiparous birth. The combined experience of colony-born parents was not related to rejection if there were no sibling helpers in the cage at the time of birth. Rejection was significantly lower if sibling helpers were present. High survival of infants who were not rejected was correlated with rearing by or being born into family groups and higher parity and older age of the sires.  相似文献

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) sequences from variable region 3 (V3) of the envelope gene were analyzed from seven infected mother-infant pairs following perinatal transmission. The V3 region sequences directly derived from the DNA of the uncultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells from infected mothers displayed a heterogeneous population. In contrast, the infants' sequences were less diverse than those of their mothers. In addition, the sequences from the younger infants' peripheral blood mononuclear cell DNA were more homogeneous than the older infants' sequences. All infants' sequences were different but displayed patterns similar to those seen in their mothers. In the mother-infant pair sequences analyzed, a minor genotype or subtype found in the mothers predominated in their infants. The conserved N-linked glycosylation site proximal to the first cysteine of the V3 loop was absent only in one infant's sequence set and in some variants of two other infants' sequences. Furthermore, the HIV-1 sequences of the epidemiologically linked mother-infant pairs were closer than the sequences of epidemiologically unlinked individuals, suggesting that the sequence comparison of mother-infant pairs done in order to identify genetic variants transmitted from mother to infant could be performed even in older infants. There was no evidence for transmission of a major genotype or multiple genotypes from mother to infant. In conclusion, a minor genotype of maternal virus is transmitted to the infants, and this finding could be useful in developing strategies to prevent maternal transmission of HIV-1 by means of perinatal interventions.  相似文献

Conflicting data exist on the importance of the father and parental experience during development in rodents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of these two variables on development in Mongolian gerbils. Forty pairs of males and females with a litter size of between 4 and 7 pups were used as subjects. Twenty couples had no experience in raising young. After the birth of their pups, four experimental groups were formed: (I) inexperienced mother and father; (II) inexperienced mother; (III) experienced mother and father and (IV) experienced mother. When the pups reached 10 days of age, pup and parental behavior was recorded in experimental sessions of 15 min on 11 consecutive days. Through the statistical analysis it was found that the presence of the father significantly increased the physical contact between pups and parents and that pups opened their eyes earlier in comparison to the groups without the father. On the other hand, parental experience had a significant influence on the behavior of the pups (locomotion inside and outside the nest, and self-grooming). The results of this study suggest that parental experience and the presence of the father have differentiated effects on development in Mongolian gerbils.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between routine infant care practices and the sudden infant death syndrome in Scotland. METHODS: National study of 201 infants dying of the sudden infant death syndrome (cases) and 276 controls by means of home interviews comparing methods of infant care and socioeconomic factors. RESULTS: Sleeping prone (odds ratio 6.96 (95% confidence interval 1.51 to 31.97) and drug treatment in the previous week (odds ratio 2.33 (1.10 to 4.94)) were more common in the cases than controls on multivariate analysis. Smoking was confirmed as a significant risk factor (odds ratio for mother and father both smoking 5.19 (2.26 to 11.91)). The risk increased with the number of parents smoking (P < 0.0001), with the number of cigarettes smoked by mother or father (P = 0.0001), and with bed sharing (P < 0.005). A new finding was an increased risk of dying of the syndrome for infants who slept at night on a mattress previously used by another infant or adult (odds ratio 2.51 (1.39 to 4.52)). However, this increased risk was not established for mattresses totally covered by polyvinyl chloride. CONCLUSIONS: Sleeping prone and parental smoking are confirmed as modifiable risk factors for the sudden infant death syndrome. Sleeping on an old mattress may be important but needs confirmation before recommendations can be made.  相似文献

Behavioral changes during weaning of chimpanzee infants in captive social groups were compared with those of infants in the natural habitat. Results of the weaning process were the same for the mother-infant pairs in captivity and the natural habitat, i.e., an infant independent of suckling, regular maternal transport and sleeping with the mother. The captive infants, however, did not respond to weaning with depression or regression to infantile behaviors as did infants in the natural habitat. Quite probably the social and physical environmental differences between the two habitats faciliated a less stressful weaning period for the captive mother-infant pairs.  相似文献

Background

With improved medical outcome in preterm infants, the psychosocial situation of their families is receiving increasing attention. For parents, the birth of a preterm infant is generally regarded as a stressful experience, and therefore many interventions are based on reducing parental stress. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether parents of children born preterm experience more stress than parents of term-born children, which would justify these interventions. This meta-analysis provides a comprehensive account of parental stress in parents of preterm infants, from birth of the infant through to their adolescence. Mean levels of stress in specific domains of family functioning were investigated, and stress levels in parents of preterm and term infants, and fathers and mothers of preterm infants, were compared. Furthermore, we investigated moderators of parental stress.

Methods and Findings

A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted including 38 studies describing 3025 parents of preterm (<37 wk) and low birth weight (<2500 g) infants. Parental stress was measured with two parent-reported questionnaires, the Parenting Stress Index and the Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The results indicate that parents of preterm-born children experience only slightly more stress than parents of term-born children, with small effect sizes. Furthermore, mothers have slightly more stress than fathers, but these effect sizes are also small. Parents report more stress for infants with lower gestational ages and lower birth weights. There is a strong effect for infant birth year, with decreasing parental stress from the 1980s onward, probably due to increased quality of care for preterm infants.

Conclusions

Based on our findings we argue that prematurity can best be regarded as one of the possible complications of birth, and not as a source of stress in itself.  相似文献

The prevailing research design for studying infant sleep erroneously assumes the species-wide normalcy of solitary nocturnal sleep rather than a social sleeping environment. In fact, current clinical perspectives on infant sleep, which are based exclusively on studies of solitary sleeping infants, may partly reflect culturally induced rather than species-typical infant sleep patterns which can only be gleaned, we contend here, from infants sleeping with their parents--the context within which, and for well over 4 million years, the hominid infant's sleep, breathing, and arousal patterns evolved. Our physiological study of five co-sleeping mother-infant pairs in a sleep lab is the first study of its kind to document the unfolding sleep patterns of mothers and infants sleeping in physical contact. Our data show that co-sleeping mothers and infants exhibit synchronous arousals, which, because of the suspected relationship between arousal and breathing stability in infants, have important implications for how we study environmental factors possibly related to some forms of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). While our data show that co-sleeping mothers and infants also experience many moments of physiological independence from each other, it is clear that the temporal unfolding of particular sleep stages and awake periods of the mother and infant become entwined and that on a minute-to-minute basis, throughout the night, much sensory communication is occurring between them. Our research acknowledges the human infant's evolutionary past and considers the implications that nocturnal separation (a historically novel and alien experience for them) has for maternal and infant well-being in general and SIDS research strategies in particular.  相似文献
