A population of Tubifex tubifex in an organically rich stream was found to have an annual life-cycle with a prolonged period of reproductive activity throughout the winter and spring. Cocoons were produced mainly during the late winter and early spring. No cocoons were found during August and September, and there were few mature worms at this time.
The population density ranged between 5420 m−2 in mid-September and 613000 m −2 in mid-May. The maximum population biomass (Bmax) recorded was 106 g dry wt m−2 (March) and the minimum was 10 g dry wt m−2 (September). Total annual production (P) was 139 g dry wt m−2 and the average annual biomass ( B ) was 46 g dry wt m−2 giving an annual P/ B ratio of 3.0, and a P/Bmax ratio of 1.3.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Marginopora kudakajimensis Gudmundsson, a dinoflagellate endosymbiont-bearing soritid foraminifer, was studied in the Ryukyu Islands, the subtropical northwest Pacific. Macroalgal samples were collected monthly between November 1995 and November 1996 at a 1-m-deep lagoonal site colonized by this species. Monthly variations in the size–frequency distributions and population density indicate that this foraminiferal population replaces itself in one year. Asexual reproduction occurs twice a year, in late spring and winter; in late spring, some of the adult individuals reproduce by multiple fission simultaneously. As a result, two cohorts (a late spring and a winter cohort) are found in the population during a year. Life span of the former cohort is up to one year, while that of the latter cohort is up to six months. Megalospheric specimens comprise up to 99% of the population with a few microspheric individuals throughout the year. The life tables and survivorship curves revealed that size-specific mortality rates were very low during the first several size classes and increased thereafter, indicating low juvenile mortality with high mortality later in life. The carbonate production rate by this Marginopora population is approximately 5 kg CaCO3 m−2 yr−1, which is extremely higher than those reported for other larger foraminiferal species.  相似文献

Asexual reproduction is employed by species of Naididae during favorable environmental conditions. In species characteristic of aquatic habitats subject to rapid fluctuations in water levels and temperatures most individuals in a population become sexually mature, and there is degeneration of the alimentary tract, a shortened breeding season, and aclitellar formation of cocoons. Cocoon deposition allows a population to survive periods of environmental stress. Sexual reproduction predominates near the edges of ranges where stress conditions are more prevalent. Species that reproduce sexually in spring are intolerant of summer conditions, while those that breed in autumn are intolerant of winter. Species typical of environmentally stable bodies of water usually have a minority of the population mature at any time, an extended breeding season, and the ability to continue feeding while mature; thus, adaptations for survival in unstable habitats are lacking.  相似文献

An epigeic (surface dweller) earthworm species Eisenia fetida and an anecic (deep burrower) earthworm species Lampito mauritii have been tested for decomposition of kitchen waste plus cow dung. Chemical analyses of worm-worked substrates by both species showed g/kg increases in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and decreases in C/N and C/P ratios after 150 days of vermicomposting. However, organic carbon matter showed reduction in their amounts for 3-4 months and afterwards slightly increased up to 150 days. E. fetida produced 0.27%, 156%, 41% and 38% increases in organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium as well as 61% and 29% decreases in C/N and C/P ratios as compared to control after 150 days of earthworm inoculation. In contrast, L. mauritii produced 14%, 102%, 33% and 42% increases in organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as 43% and 14% decreases in C/N and C/P ratios as compared to control after 150 days of earthworm activity. There was moderate mineralization and faster decomposition by E. fetida in comparison to moderate mineralization and moderate decomposition by L. mauritii. The average numbers of cocoons and adults produced were greater by E. fetida than by L. mauritii after 150 days. These results indicate E. fetida may be a better adapted species for decomposition of kitchen waste plus cow dung under tropical conditions.  相似文献

Population dynamics of Stylaria lacustris were analyzed over 2 years in a pond located at Los Talas, Argentina. In both years, the peak in abundance, due to intense asexual reproduction, fell at the end of winter, and was followed by mature individuals. The species was not collected during summer. Temperature was the main factor regulating the population through both sexual and asexual reproduction. In the second year, density was lower and correlated with a lower water level and a reduced vegetation development. Individuals were randomly distributed in periods of high abundance and contagious when density was low. Generation time was 15 days.  相似文献

研究动物种群的年龄结构及种群的更新,是了解种群数量动态的重要内容之一。动物种群更新是受种群内年龄组成、出生率、死亡率及外界诸因素影响的,深入研究种群的更新规律及导致变动的原因,常能合理地拟定控制动物数量的科学方法。因此这项研究具有理论上及实践上的意义。 黑线姬鼠(Apodemus agrarius)是上海郊区农田中数量最多,危害最大的一种鼠类(盛林等1959)。本文根据1962-1964年及1979-1980年的工作,共获黑线姬鼠5367只。对其种群的年龄结构,繁殖季节波动,种群周期性更新规律等作了初步分析,对郊区农田选择最佳突击灭鼠时机提出了依据。  相似文献

The distribution of the indigenous New Zealand megascolecid earthworm Octochaetus multiporus (Beddard) in hill pastures of different fertilities in the southern North Island of New Zealand, and the population density throughout a year are described. Octochaetus multiporus was most numerous in soils of low to moderate fertility. High fertility soils had a similar population density to that of an adjacent area of native forest, indicating that the exotic pasture environment can favour Octochaetus multiporus in some circumstances. Population density of Octochaetus multiporus was best correlated with soils which were moist in summer. There was no well defined breeding season for this species, mature and recently hatched individuals being found in most months of the year. Octochaetus multiporus is a deeper burrowing indigenous earthworm species which is successful in an exotic environment. In pastures which have moist soils in summer, this species may be improving soil structure and root penetration in the absence of deep burrowing introduced lumbricid earthworms.  相似文献

The reproductive period for L. hoffmeisteri as observed in the Little Calumet River (41°34′22″N. 87°28′30Prime;W) occurs from early fall through late spring. The period is marked by the development of the reproductive organs in the early fall months, followed by the development of sperm products within the sperm sac. The female organs appear to mature in middle to late winter with the appearance of nutritive granules followed by the developing eggs in early spring. This cycle is completed in early to late spring with the appearance of cocoons containing developing embryos. It is also apparent that a low level of reproductive activity occurs throughout the rest of the year. This is usually observed in worms with developed sperm sacs and sperm products, having matured penis and some developed egg sacs with nutritive granules. Eggs have not been observed during this low level of reproductive activity.  相似文献

Cold hardiness of 12 species and 2 subspecies of earthworms from Northern Eurasia was studied. Supercooling temperatures, the water content and the thresholds of tolerated temperatures of worms and their cocoons were determined. The threshold values varied within ?1…?35°C for worms and within ?1…?196°C for cocoons. Earthworms of 4 species and 2 subspecies survived freezing. Cocoons of all species except Eisenia fetida possessed a protective dehydration mechanism which prevented their freezing. During wintering at subzero temperatures, earthworms lost up to 20% of water, cocoons up to 37%. Species of the same life form can overwinter at different phases and have different cold hardiness values. On the whole, epigeic and epi-endogeic species (except for Eisenia fetida) were more resistant to cold than endogeic ones. The following preliminary classification of earthworms according to their tolerance to negative temperatures is proposed: (1) both onthogenetic phases are tolerant; (2) only cocoons are tolerant; (3) both onthogenetic phases are intolerant. The geographic distribution of all the studied species (except for Eisenia nordenskioldi nordenskioldi) is partially or completely limited by insufficient resistance of the worms to negative temperatures. A significant cold hardiness of cocoons of most species is nonadaptive, since the worms hatched from the eggs in spring die without having enough time to reach maturity and to lay cocoons before the onset of subzero temperatures. Only 3 species (Eisenia nordenskioldi nordenskioldi, Eisenia atlavinyteae, and Dendrobaena octaedra) can live in permafrost regions; this is the main reason for a drastically reduced diversity of earthworm assemblages in eastern Siberia except for its southern, mountain parts. In general, the reasons for the impoverishment lie in the modern climatic conditions correlated with the ecophysiological capacities of earthworms.  相似文献

Aspects of the population and reproductive biologyof the mysid Mesopodopsis slabberi were studiedin the western Mediterranean (Encanyissada coastallagoon, Ebre delta, Spain). Misids were sampling atmonthly intervals from August 1993 to June 1995. InDecember 1994 and February 1995 any individuals werefound. The relationship between carapace length (Lc)and total length (Lt) was isometric:logLt = 1.0612logLc + 0.9411 (n = 178,r = 0.9411). Thesize of mature males and females was at a maximum inthe winter, and a minimum in the summer. The longevityof individuals changed throughout the year; those withthe longest life expectancy were members of theoverwintering generation. Brooding females wererecorded throughout the year, except in December 1993and April 1994; they were most numerous in spring andautumn. The number of embryos or larvae (N) carried byfemales was related to the size of the females (range:1–22, mean value: 4.8): logN = 1.8705logLc–0.0985(n = 361, r = 0.4097, P < 0.01). The population dynamics of a monogamous coral-reef fish were examined to test hypotheses of recruitment limitation, predation, and postrecruitment processes, and to determine their affects on the mating system. Valenciennea strigata are monogamous gobies that live in sand and rubble zones throughout the Indo-Pacific. Seasonal abundance was recorded in the summer and winter over 2.5 years. A subset of this population was tagged (n = 256) and followed to determine mortality and mobility. Valenciennea strigata were more abundant in summer than in winter, suggesting that a pulse of recruitment in the spring set the maximum population density. Growth rates derived from tagged fish support the hypothesis that recruitment peaked in the spring. Tagged fish experienced 88% mortality within six months; the annual mortality rate approached 100%. Evidence of predation, antipredatory behavior and strong site fidelity implicate predation as the primary source of mortality. Competition for space was not observed between adults, but may affect settlement and recruitment. Despite the lack of adult competition for space, both sexes guarded their mates and courted individuals of the opposite sex. Thus, although population size appears to be determined by nonequilibrium processes, the mating system is affected by competition for mates. Successful mate guarding by both sexes enforced monogamy.  相似文献

Comparative studies were performed to evaluate composting potential, biomass growth and biology of a non-native (Eisenia fetida) and an endemic (Lampito mauritii) species of earthworm in the semiarid environment of Jodhpur district of Rajasthan in India. Earthworms were reared in a mixed bedding material comprised of biogas slurry, cowdung, wheat straw, leaflitter, sawdust and kitchen waste. The percentage of organic carbon of the culture bedding material declined upto 105 days with E. fetida and 120 with L. mauritii. The percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium increased as a function of the vermicomposting period. In contrast, C/N and C/P ratios decreased day by day. Both species were effective for decomposition and mineralization of mixed bedding in the semiarid environment. A comparative assessment of biomass growth of E. fetida and L. mauritii was done under controlled laboratory conditions. The optimum temperature, moisture content and pH for E. fetida were 25 degrees C, 70% and 6.5, respectively. However, the optimum temperature, moisture content and pH for growth and development of L. mauritii were 30 degrees C, 60% and 7.5, respectively. The biology and reproductive rates of both species were also studied in the laboratory using mixed bedding. Cocoon production was higher for E. fetida than L. mauritii. The net reproductive rate was 9 per month in the case of E. fetida and 1 per month for L. mauritii. Fertilized eggs of E. fetida and L. mauritii developed into adults within 4 and 5 1/4 months, respectively. These observations indicate E. fetida may be a more efficient breeder than L. mauritii in the desert region of Rajasthan.  相似文献

蚯蚓在有机残体转化和土壤养分循环中起着重要的作用,为明确不同生态类型蚯蚓的食性及其消化有机物质的能力,测定了表居型蚯蚓赤爱胜蚓(Eisenia fetida)和上食下居型蚯蚓威廉环毛蚓(Pheretima guillemi)肠道内纤维素酶、蛋白酶、酸性磷酸酶和碱性磷酸酶的活性;同时还对威廉环毛蚓排泄物中蛋白酶、磷酸酶以及CO2呼吸强度与原土进行了比较,结果表明,赤爱胜蚓肠道内纤维素酶活性远远高于威廉环毛蚓,而蛋白酶和酸性及碱性磷酸酶活性显著低于威廉环毛蚓;两种蝗 蚓肠道消化酶活化的差异与赤爱胜蚓直接以植物残体为食,而威廉环毛蚓以半分解的有机残体上的微生物为食有关。根据研究结果,提出了饲养环毛 时要注意增加饵料中微生物量的观点。  相似文献

Earthworms are key components of temperate soil ecosystems but key aspects of their ecology remain unexamined. Here we elucidate the role of olfactory cues in earthworm attraction to food sources and document specific chemical cues that attract Eisenia fetida to the soil fungi Geotrichum candidum. Fungi and other microorganisms are major sources of volatile emissions in soil ecosystems as well as primary food sources for earthworms, suggesting the likelihood that earthworms might profitably use olfactory cues to guide foraging behavior. Moreover, previous studies have documented earthworm movement toward microbial food sources. But, the specific olfactory cues responsible for earthworm attraction have not previously been identified. Using olfactometer assays combined with chemical analyses (GC-MS), we documented the attraction of E. fetida individuals to filtrate derived from G. candidum colonies and to two individual compounds tested in isolation: ethyl pentanoate and ethyl hexanoate. Attraction at a distance was observed when barriers prevented the worms from reaching the target stimuli, confirming the role of volatile cues. These findings enhance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying key trophic interactions in soil ecosystems and have potential implications for the extraction and collection of earthworms in vermiculture and other applied activities.  相似文献

The potential ecological impact of exotic terrestrial planarians will be determined in part by their sensory abilities and predatory behavior. It has been suggested that these flatworms may only encounter their earthworm prey by chance, hence restricting the breadth of species they will feed upon and the number of microhabitats in which predator-prey interactions occur. We hypothesized that those flatworms that have already successfully invaded North America (genus Bipalium) actually detect and follow chemical trails of earthworms and possess the behavioral repertoire needed to feed on the prey in a range of microhabitats. We examined: (1) the tendency of Bipalium adventitium to follow chemical trails left by injured and un-injured earthworms; (2) the behavioral repertoire and predatory success of B. adventitium feeding on three earthworm species in subterranean tunnels; and (3) the response of flatworms to the reportedly defensive secretions of the earthworm Eisenia fetida in tunnels. B. adventitium detected and followed trails of earthworm mucus and secretions left by injured and un-injured earthworms. Flatworms followed trails on a range of substrates and pursued and captured three species of earthworms in subterranean tunnels, including individuals many times their mass. Although most behavior exhibited during underground attacks was similar to that reported for surface encounters, the flatworms also behaved in ways that blocked earthworm escape from tunnels. The flatworms were less successful at preying on E. fetida than on Lumbricus rubellus and Lumbricus terrestris in underground tunnels and showed some aversion to the secretions from E. fetida.  相似文献

Earthworms are one of the most important and beneficial macrofauna, and are used extensively in organic farming. Earthworms mediate soil biological regulation systems, and produce biogenic structures. They help to maintain soil structure, water infiltration, and regulate the availability of nutrients assimilated by plants. The objectives of this study were to perform morphological and molecular characterizations of 24 earthworm individuals collected from geographically diverse locations to assess the level of genetic variation. For molecular analysis, the effectiveness of RAPD, ISSR, and Universal rice primers (URPs) markers was investigated to identify polymorphism among 24 isolates of earthworms. A total of 62 molecular markers were used for amplification of genomic DNA of earthworms. Of these, 10 RAPD, 10 ISSR, and 10 URPs markers were used for characterization, which showed 95.7%, 96.7% and 98.3% polymorphism, respectively. The dendrogram, generated from the DNA markers by the unweighted pair group method using arithmetic averages, grouped all the isolates into two main clusters. All Eisenia fetida isolates were clustered in group A, whereas group B included three isolates belonging to Eudrilus eugeniae. Molecular markers allowed a rapid assessment of genetic variation among these closely related isolates of earthworms. These results suggest that molecular markers are a good choice for diversity analysis of earthworm individuals.  相似文献

Viable bacteria were found to coexist with developing embryos in egg capsules (cocoons) of the earthworm Eisenia fetida. Earthworms were reared under standardized conditions, and bacterial densities were measured in distinct batches of cocoons collected weekly for 10 weeks. Cocoons weighing 12 mg contained a mean viable bacterial population of approximately 108 CFU/g of cocoons. No difference was found in viable counts obtained from cocoons incubated at 15°C and cocoons incubated at 24°C. Viable bacterial numbers increased with cocoon age, while acridine orange direct counts of microbial cells were stable at approximately 109 cells per g of cocoons. Bacteria isolated from cocoons were used to develop antisera in rabbits for the production of strain-specific fluorescent antibodies. Fluorescent antibody and selective plating techniques were used to monitor populations of these bacteria in earthworm bedding and to determine whether cocoons acquire bacteria from the environment in which they are formed. Cocoon isolates were readily recovered from cocoons formed in inoculated bedding at densities of 108 CFU/g of cocoons. Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA 110 and UMR 161 added to bedding were also recovered from cocoons, but at lower densities than cocoon isolates. Escherichia coli K-12(pJP4) inoculum was recovered from bedding but not from cocoons. The bacterial complement of Eisenia fetida cocoons is affected by inoculation of selected bacterial isolates in the worm growth environment.  相似文献

Here we present, to the authors' knowledge for the very first time for a small marsupial, a thorough analysis of the demography and population dynamics of the mouse opossum (Thylamys elegans) in western South America. We test the relative importance of feedback structure and climatic factors (rainfall and the Southern Oscillation Index) in explaining the temporal variation in the demography of the mouse opossum. The demographic information was incorporated into a stage-structured population dynamics model and the model's predictions were compared with observed patterns. The mouse opossum's capture rates showed seasonal (within-year) and between-year variability, with individuals having higher capture rates during late summer and autumn and lower capture rates during winter and spring. There was also a strong between-year effect on capture probabilities. The reproductive (the fraction of reproductively active individuals) and recruitment rates showed a clear seasonal and a between-year pattern of variation with the peak of reproductive activity occuring during winter and early spring. In addition, the fraction of reproductive individuals was positively related to annual rainfall, while population density and annual rainfall positively influenced the recruitment rate. The survival rates were negatively related to annual rainfall. The average finite population growth rate during the study period was estimated to be 1.011 +/- 0.0019 from capture-recapture estimates. While the annual growth rate estimated from the seasonal linear matrix models was 1.026, the subadult and adult survival and maturation rates represent between 54% (winter) and 81% (summer) of the impact on the annual growth rate.  相似文献

Abstract. The population structure and reproductive biology of a population of the spionid polychaete Pygospio elegans was studied at Drum Sands, Firth of Forth, Scotland, between March 1997 and February 1998. P. elegans was numerically dominant at the site and exhibited a population density increase through the sampling period. The population showed a seasonal pattern with two acute periods of recruitment during the year, one in spring and one in winter. Planktotrophic larvae were the only larval type produced throughout the sampling period. Larvae were released at the 3–5 setiger stage and settled at a size of 18–22 setigers. The spring recruits grew at a rate of 23 setigers per month, reaching sexual maturation size during September of the same year. The adult sex ratio was female-biased throughout the study period (mean = 2.99:1 ± 0.51). When female:ripe male sex ratios were highest (summer and fall), the proportion of females brooding larvae decreased suggesting that sexual reproduction is seasonal. Asexual reproduction was not observed in the population of P. elegans on Drum Sands. These findings suggest that a high degree of variability is a trait of the reproductive biology of P. elegans. .  相似文献

A 12-month investigation of the population dynamics, growth, ageing, reproduction and sexuality of Anodonta woodiana (Lea, 1834) in Plover Cove Reservoir, Hong Kong, has been undertaken. Recruitment occurs in the summer, May through July being the period of peak incidence of glochidia on captive fish hosts. Juveniles grow rapidly to a shell length of 30 mm and are sexually mature by the following spring. A study of the population structure of A. woodiana indicated that most animals were less than 8 years old. Results of a Walford plot for this species indicated a maximum theoretical shell length (in Plover Cove) of 162·5 mm and a life span of approximately 12 years; the latter is in good agreement with age estimates for European unionids.
Anodonta woodiana is dioecious with females predominating in a ratio of 60:40. A very small number of individuals (0·3%) are hermaphrodite. Males possess mature gonads throughout the year whereas females come into reproductive condition during the spring. There was no evidence of shell form sexual dimorphism, as has been recorded for other unionaceans.
The reproductive strategy and time of gonad maturation of A. woodiana is compared with that of unionids from elsewhere and with other fresh water bivalves from southern China.  相似文献
