Summary An electron microscopic study aimed at differentiation between castration gonadotrophs and posthepatectomy STH cells was performed on the pars distalis of the pituitary of castrated male mice, after partial hepatectomy. The ultrastructural features observed permit the distinction of both cell types. In the present experiments some remarkable ultrastructural changes, other than those described in a previous report, have been found in STH cells of hepatectomized mice with or without previous castration. Most of them contained masses of heterogeneous electron density, suggesting fusion of granules. These masses and some secretion granules were observed close to the plasma membrane, apparently in the process of discharging material into the pericapillary space. Granular extrusion was more frequent than normally. An increased number of lysosomes, probably related to the digestion of overproduced secretion material, was evident. The appearance of concentric lamellar formations might be related to an increase in cell movements. STH cells with severe cytoplasmic damage were also found, indicating an increased rate of cell loss.Work carried out with the financial assistance by a grant from the Comisión de Investigación Científica de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Summary The effects of adenohypophysectomy were studied on the hypothalamichypophysial neurosecretory system and the adrenal glands of Bufo arenarum Hensel. An increase in vascularization of the pars intermedia was found and the neurosecretory material (NSM) in the glandular region of the median eminence disappeared. Its reappearance later was accompanied by hypertrophy of the pars intermedia; differentiated chromophil cells appeared in the pars intermedia around the vessels and, at the same time, the adrenal reverted to normal. These findings are interpreted as hypertrophy and differentiation of the pars intermedia with replacement, at least partly, of the functions of the pars distalis. Summary The neurohypophysis of the South American lungfish Lepidosiren paradoxa has been studied with light and electron microscopy, including the Falck-Hillarp technique for catecholamines. The pars nervosa hypophyseos is a well-marked, dorsally located subdivision of the pituitary gland composed of lobes or follicles, each one constituted of a central core of ependymal cells, a subependymal hilar region made up of nerve fibers and a peripheric palisade zone of nerve endings which contact capillary vessels. Four types of neurosecretory axons can be distinguished under the electron microscope. Type I, the most common, contains spherical elementary granules of high electron density, 1500–1800 Å in diameter. The scarce type II axons contain irregularly-shaped elementary granules. Type III contains only small clear vesicles, 400–600 Å in diameter. Type IV, mostly present in regions of the gland contacting the pars intermedia, contain large granulated vesicles, 900–1000 Å in diameter. The Falck-Hillarp technique revealed axons with a positive reaction for catecholamines at sites corresponding approximately to the location of type IV of the electron microscope.Ependymal cells are of large size, linking the cerebrospinal fluid, the nerve endings and the blood vessels. A conspicuous membrane-bound, spherical dense material, 1400–2000 Å in diameter, is observed in both the apical and vascular processes of these cells. The ependymal processes which traverse the hilar and palisade regions contain structures resembling degenerated neurosecretory axons. These results are discussed in relation with the currently available information on the comparative anatomy of the pars nervosa. Buoyant density in CsCl, melting temperature, and G + C base content of the DNA from four species of Akodon (Rodentia, Cricetidae) were determined. The buoyant density values of 1.699–1.701 g/cm3 were in accordance with the data reported for other cricetids. No satellite bands were seen in neutral CsCl. The T m values determined in 1 × SSC ranged from 86.2 to 87.0 C, which corresponds to G + C contents of 41.2–43.2%. Summary An electron microscopic analysis was performed on the pars distalis of the hypophysis of hepatectomized mice. Intact and sham operated mice served as controls. The STH cells presented striking changes that were most intense and widespread in those animals sacrificed at midnight of the second day after hepatectomy. These changes can be summarized as follows: 1) Hypertrophy of the Golgi complex with increased number of immature granules within the Golgi zone. This change appeared also in otherwise unmodified STH cells. 2) Strong dilatation of the endoplasmic reticulum whose cisternae contained much electron dense material. 3) Granules with partially diminished electron density, some of them in spatial relation with the plasma membrane and others swelling and bursting within the cytoplasm. All transitions between unchanged 350–400 m granules and extremely altered ones, were seen. 4) Release sites, characterized by dense zones in the plasmalemma, close to aggregates of electron lucent microvesicles, and almost empty granule membranes. 5) Increase in the density of the mitochondria which appeared grouped near the Golgi zone. 6) Increase in the number of large lysosomes of the autophagic vacuole type. 7) Irregular nuclear outlines. Summary The distal half of the posterior tentacle of adult Helix aspersa and Cryptomphallus aspersa was removed and the proximal half was studied with light and electron microscopy after different intervals. The tentacle itself does not regenerate, but the receptor organs at the distal end of the normal tentacle differentiate at the level of the section. NAD-linked lactate, malate, glycerophosphate, alcohol and nonspecific dehydrogenases, aspartate aminotransferases, and soluble esterases from extracts of tissues of individuals from a wild population of Calomys musculinus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) have been analyzed by means of starch gel electrophoresis and specific staining. Allelic frequencies and heterozygosity have been determined. Mendelian inheritance of some of the variants detected was confirmed by breeding experiments. Ten out of fifteen (66.6%) of the genetic loci investigated presented polymorphism. Summary Newborn male rats were injected with a single dose of dexamethasone on the first day of life. Controls received only the diluent. Two to ten days later the experimental and control animals were sacrificed, and the adrenal medullae were processed for electron microscopy and for histochemical demonstration of catecholamines. Rats that received dexamethasone, as compared to controls showed (1) an earlier appearance of the catecholamine reaction, and (2) a pronounced development of the Golgi complex. These results are further indication that glucocorticoid stimulates the maturation of the chromaffin complex. Summary Yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) were immobilized in pectin gel, incubated 12 h at 30°C and then used for the continuous production of ethanol employing a wedge-shaped horizontal reactor and sugar cane molasses as the carbon source. Under steady state conditions the mean residence time was 1.6 h and the volumetric productivity 40 g EtOH/hl. The gas evolved was easily released. Summary The study of standarized sections of the hypophysial regions, and in vivo observations showed the presence of communicating vessels between the capillary network of the median eminence and the large capillaries of the neurointermediate junction. Moreover, direct branches from the hypophysial artery are described which give off branches, at the level of the neural stalk, to the median eminence and to the large capillaries of the neurointermediate junction.A second portal system similar to the one described by Cruz has been observed. Its primary plexus originates in several encephalic regions, and its secondary plexus is distributed through the neural lobe and thence to the pars intermedia. The course of flow in this system is a descending one. The arterial contribution to this system appears to arise from branches from the basilar and retroinfundibular arteries. — There are small venous-type vessels between the large capillaries of the neurointermediate junction and the posterodorsal region of the pars distalis. — After adenohypophysectomy, the blood which normally goes towards the pars distalis, flows towards the pars intermedia, following the path of the communicating vessels between the median eminence and the pars intermedia.This paper was presented at the VII Reunion de la Asociación Latinoamericana de Ciencias Fisiológicas (A.L.A.C.F.), Mar del Plata, Argentina, 1966. This work reports the extraction and back-extraction of an intracellular recombinant cutinase from complex biological media using AOT reversed micelles in isooctane. Cutinase was recovered from different complex media namely, fermentation broths and supernatants after cell disruption by osmotic shock and sonication. Two new nitrate-assimilating yeasts isolated from decomposed wood ofNothofagus sp. are described. Evidence is provided in this paper that indicates that fatty acids but not phospholipids are removed from microsomes or artificial membranes (liposomes, unilamellar vesicles) by mouse liver cytosolic preparations enriched with fatty acid binding protein (FABP). The cytosolic proteins can act as acceptors for fatty acids but not for phospholipids of microsomal origin. Direct evidence came when liposomes made of egg yolk phosphatidylcholine, containing both [14C]labeled phospholipids and [1-14C] palmitic acid were incubated with FABP. Using sonicated vesicles as fatty acid or phospholipid donors, mouse liver fatty acid binding protein was capable of binding palmitic acid but not phospholipids. Resumen En este trabajo se estudia en la Parte I todo el material procedente de especímenes clínicos.En primer lugar se estudian las cepas aisladas de Micosis Superficiales o Dermatomicosis.En segundo lugar, los hongos levuriformes del género Candida procedentes de materiales clínicos varios.En tercer lugar los agentes de Micosis Profundas, y finalmente los hongos del aire de Caracas que tienen interes alergológico.Los resultados de todo aparecen en los cuadros sinópticos adjuntos.
Summary In this part of our work we deal with fungi of clinical interest.Firstly, we study specimens isolated from dermatomycoses.Secondly, yeast-like fungi of the genusCandida of clinical origin.Thirdly, fungi producing systemic mycoses and lastly, air-borne fungi of allergic interest from Caracas and its surroundings.

Résumé Dans la première partie de ce travail, on étudie tout le matériel d'intérêt médical.En premier lieu, les souches isolées de matériel clinique de Mycoses Superficielles ou Dermatomycoses.En deuxième lieu, les champignons lévuriformes du genre Candida provenant de matériaux cliniques variés.En troisième lieu, les Agents de Mycoses Profondes et, finalement, les champignons contenus dans l'air de Caracas intéressant la Mycologie Allergique.

Summary Studies with the electron microscope revealed the presence of glycogen granules in the neurohypophysis of toads (Bufo arenarum Hensel). The glycogen appeared as scattered particles or as clusters formed by these particles within the nerve fibers. The scattered granules were intermingled with the neurosecretory granules and with the microvesicles. Summary A twenty-four hour rhythm is described in the variations of mitotic activity, dry weight, and water content of the regenerating liver of mice hepatectomized about noon. These variables have their maximal value at the onset of the rest periods in the morning and their minimal values at the initiation of the body activity periods in the evening. The rhythm is well defined on the second day and is repeated on the third day on a higher level.We acknowledge the assistance of Mrs. R. Cavoura in performing the hepatectomies and that of Mrs. M. A. V. Summary Two types of granules can be distinguished in the toad choroid plexus under the light microscope: pigment granules, mainly localized in the cells that line the free ends of the choroidal villi, and Gomori-positive granules, present in most epithelial cells.The ultrastructural analysis of the choroid plexus reveals three types of granules: multivesicular bodies (MVB), multigranulous bodies (MGB) and dense bodies (DB), and intermediate stages between the last two bodies. The pigment granules seen under the light microscope probably correspond to the DB of the electron micrographs, and the Gomori-positive granules to the MGB. Summary By the use of lectin histochemistry, and immunocytochemistry with antisera against bovine neurophysins I and II (NPs), arginine vasotocin (AVT) and mesotocin (MST), the neural lobe of the hypophysis in the snake Natrix maura was investigated at the light- and electron-microscopic levels. While paraldehyde-fuchsin stained virtually all neurosecretory endings, the periodic acid-Schiff reaction revealed only a portion of these elements. Furthermore, concanavalin-A and wheat-germ agglutinin lectins reacted with some but not all terminals. While in electron micrographs lectin-positive neurosecretory endings displayed medium-sized, pale neurosecretory granules, those from lectinnegative endings were larger and denser. The antiserum against the two NPs revealed the entire population of neurosecretory endings. The antiserum to AVT stained more numerous fiber elements than the antiserum to MST. Ultrastructurally, correlations concerning size and electron density can be found, on the one hand, between AVT-immunoreactive and lectin-positive neurosecretory granules and, on the other hand, between MST-immunoreactive and lectinnegative granules.
