Decomposers and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) both determine plant nutrition; however, little is known about their interactive effects on plant communities. We set up a greenhouse experiment to study effects of plant competition (one- and two-species treatments), Collembola (Heteromurus nitidus and Protaphorura armata), and AMF (Glomus intraradices) on the performance (above- and belowground productivity and nutrient uptake) of three grassland plant species (Lolium perenne, Trifolium pratense, and Plantago lanceolata) belonging to three dominant plant functional groups (grasses, legumes, and herbs). Generally, L. perenne benefited from being released from intraspecific competition in the presence of T. pratense and P. lanceolata. However, the presence of AMF increased the competitive strength of P. lanceolata and T. pratense against L. perenne and also modified the effects of Collembola on plant productivity. The colonization of roots by AMF was reduced in treatments with two plant species suggesting that plant infection by AMF was modified by interspecific plant interactions. Collembola did not affect total colonization of roots by AMF, but increased the number of mycorrhizal vesicles in P. lanceolata. AMF and Collembola both enhanced the amount of N and P in plant shoot tissue, but impacts of Collembola were less pronounced in the presence of AMF. Overall, the results suggest that, by differentially affecting the nutrient acquisition and performance of plant species, AMF and Collembola interactively modify plant competition and shape the composition of grassland plant communities. The results suggest that mechanisms shaping plant community composition can only be understood when complex belowground interactions are considered.

Emergence from an aquatic environment to the land is one of the major evolutionary transitions within the arthropods. It is often considered that the first hexapods, and especially the first Collembola, went from the sea through intermediate freshwater environments to colonize fully terrestrial ecosystems. To understand the ancestral ecology of hexapods, a phylogenetic framework is used. By mapping ecological attributes onto the phylogeny, it is shown that hexapods colonized terrestrial environments directly from marine environment without a transition through freshwater. An edaphic life-style is the basal state for Collembola and more generally for hexapods as a whole. Aquatic ecology is inferred to be a secondary change that occurred several times independently, particularly in some group of Collembola and Pterygota. The answer is ambiguous for Pterygota, whether the first Pterygota had aquatic larvae and reversed toward fully terrestrial in Neoptera, or aquatic larvae appeared independently in Odonata and Ephemeroptera. Subsequently, aquatic larvae were secondarily acquired in various groups independently (e.g. Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Coleoptera).

Female lifespan and reproduction, in terms of numberof larvae produced, of the soil-dwelling predatorymite Lasioseius fimetorum Karg (Acari:Podocinidae) fed on mould mites (Tyrophagusputrescentiae [Schrank] [Acarina: Acaridae]) wereinvestigated by laboratory experiments at 20 °C,as were the mite's consumption rates of various prey. After a preoviposition period of 10.7 days, L.fimetorum produced progeny at a daily rate of 0.7.The oviposition period lasted 23.6 days and a total of19.4 progeny were produced per female. Females livedfor 38.6 days. Eggs of the Collembola Isotomurusspp. (Collembola: Isotomidae) were consumed in thelargest amount by L. fimetorum followed by mouldmite nymphs, larvae and pupae of thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis [Pergande] [Thysanoptera:Thripidae]), eggs of the Collembola Micrisotomaspp. (Collembola: Isotomidae), Isotomurus spp.nymphs and sciarid larvae (Bradysia pauperaTuomikoski and B. tritici (Coquillet) [Diptera:Sciaridae]). Immature drain flies (Psychoda spp.[Diptera: Psychodidae]) were not consumed by L.fimetorum. The suitability of L. fimetorum forbiological control of glasshouse pests withsoil-dwelling stages is discussed in comparison withanother predatory mite Hypoaspis miles Berlese(Acarina: Hypoaspididae).

Tomoceridae is common but among the most problematic groups of Collembola. Its position within Collembola and the relationships within the family remain obscure. This also extends to the generic division of the subfamily Tomocerinae that remains controversial. This study examines these issues by integrating both molecular and morphological evidence. Our molecular phylogeny based on rDNA sequences supports the monophyly of Tomoceridae and the sister relationship between Tomocerinae and Lepidophorellinae. Reconstructions and tree topology tests constraining monophyly did not resolve the relationships between Tomoceridae and other collembolan groups. We also examined the morphology of the first instar (primary) larvae, which has significant phylogenetic value among higher Collembola. Mapping primary chaetotaxy onto our molecular phylogeny provided further evidence for the unique position of Tomoceridae within Entomobryomorpha and Collembola. The monophyly and subfamilial classification within Tomoceridae were validated here, whereas its position among Collembola will need further studies in a broader consideration across the major collembolan orders. Within Tomocerinae, the monophyly of Pogonognathellus was demonstrated, but the status of Tomocerus and Tomocerina is still to be resolved.

Rainforest conversion and expansion of plantations in tropical regions are associated with changes in animal communities and biodiversity decline. In soil, Collembola are one of the most numerous invertebrate groups that affect the functioning of microbial communities and support arthropod predators. Despite that, information on the impact of changes in land use in the tropics on species and trait composition of Collembola communities is very limited. We investigated the response of Collembola to the conversion of rainforest into rubber agroforestry (“jungle rubber”), rubber, and oil palm plantations in Jambi Province (Sumatra, Indonesia), a region which experienced one of the strongest recent deforestation globally. Collembola were sampled in 2013 and 2016 from the litter and soil layer using heat extraction, and environmental factors were measured (litter C/N ratio, pH, water content, composition of microbial community and predator abundance). In the litter layer, density and species richness in plantation systems were 25%–38% and 30%–40% lower, respectively, than in rainforest. However, in the soil layer, density, species richness, and trait diversity of Collembola were only slightly affected by land‐use change, contrasting the response of many other animal groups. Species and trait composition of Collembola communities in litter and soil differed between each of the land‐use systems. Water content and pH were identified as main factors related to the differences in species and trait composition in both litter and soil, followed by the density of micro‐ and macropredators. Dominant species of Collembola in rainforest and jungle rubber were characterized by small body size, absence of furca, and absence of intense pigmentation, while in plantations, larger species with long furca and diffuse or patterned pigmentation were more abundant. Overall, land‐use change negatively affected Collembola communities in the litter layer, but its impact was lower in the soil layer. Several pantropical genera of Collembola (i.e., Isotomiella, Pseudosinella, and Folsomides) dominated across land‐use systems, reflecting their high environmental adaptability and/or efficient dispersal, calling for studies on their ecology and genetic diversity. The decline in species richness and density of litter‐dwelling Collembola with the conversion of rainforest into plantation systems calls for management practices mitigating negative effects of the deterioration of the litter layer in rubber plantations, but even more in oil palm plantations.

Slave-making ants exploit the labour of their own or another species. Temnothorax ambiguus and T. longispinosus are both ant species that serve as hosts of the obligatory slave-making ant Protomognathus americanus and are facultative slave-makers themselves. We offered laboratory colonies of T. ambiguus and T. longispinosus a series of choices among different larval types to better understand their brood discrimination abilities. Workers of both species preferentially accepted nestmate over non-nestmate larvae. Both species preferentially retrieved unrelated conspecific larvae over congeneric allospecific larvae, and T. ambiguus workers consumed more allospecifics than conspecifics. When presented with conspecific versus P. americanus larvae, both species manifested a clear bias towards conspecific larvae in terms of earlier retrieval and reduced cannibalism. That workers did not prefer P. americanus larvae over conspecific larvae as documented in previous research likely reflects the fact that in the present study, subject workers had access to the entirety of their colony as a referent during rearing and at the time of testing, as they would in nature. Moreover, reciprocal contact between P. americanus and conspecific larvae increased acceptance of the slave-maker larvae, but did not appear to lessen the acceptability of conspecific larvae. This suggests that transfer of cues through contact may be sufficient to alter the recognition signature of P. americanus larvae increasing acceptability by their hosts.

The mesoderm formation of Tomocerus ishibashii (Collembola : Tomoceridae) is described. Mesodermal cells are formed after the beginning of the formation of the primary dorsal organ, and originate from the entire region of the embryonic area. After completion of the blastodermic cuticles, cells of mesoderm and ectoderm concentrate towards a ventral midline and form a well-defined 2-layered germ band. The manner of mesoderm formation in the Collembola is similar to that in Diplura and Myriapods, except for the Chilopoda; the mesoderm of the Thysanura s. lat. and Pterygota originates from a localized zone of the embryo. Within the Hexapoda, mesoderm formation is categorized into 2 types: Type 1—unlocalized origin, in the Collembola and Diplura, and Type 2—localized origin, in the Thysanura s. lat. and Pterygota. Types 1 and 2 are thought to be plesiomorphic and apomorphic, respectively.

In the ant Pheidole bicarinata, adult soldiers suppress the induction of soldier developments in larvae that have been treated with methoprene, as well as in acetone-treated controls. Induction of soldier development is inhibited in methoprene-treated larvae when the adult soldiers are present as nurses, when they are present in the colony but minor workers serve as nurses, and when they are held in a minor worker-permeable cage to prevent them from contacting larvae. Suppression of soldier determination can be overridden by high doses of methoprene applied during the juvenile hormone-sensitive period for soldier determination. The degree of suppression increases with increasing contact between larvae and adult soldiers. The most likely mechanism of inhibition is a contact soldier pheromone. On the basis of our results, we expand our model of soldier determination to accommodate the fact that the threshold titre of juvenile hormone necessary to induce soldier development changes in the presence of soldiers. A threshold that is sensitive to the presence of adult soldiers provides a mechanism whereby the worker caste ratio in colonies can be regulated.

Supercooling points of insects and mites on the Antarctic Peninsula
Abstract. 1. Mean supercooling points of eleven species of arthropods (three Collembola, seven Acari and one Diptera) ranged from -6.2 to -9.4°C (high group), and from -17.7 to -31.0°C (low group). The majority of individuals in the high group had food in their gut systems.
2. Freezing was lethal to all species examined except larval Belgica antarctica Jacobs (Chironomidae).
3. Glucose, glycerol and mannitol were found in low concentrations in extracts of Ctyptopygus antarcticus Willem (Collembola) and larvae of B. antarcrica; it is udikely that these substances had a major effect on the supercooling of either species.
4. Two Collembola species possessed significantly ( P< 0.05) lower supercooling points at locations on the Antarctic Pensinsula than at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands. The converse was observed for two species of Acari.
5. It is suggested that whilst gross climatic and also micro-habitat conditions may influence the cold hardiness of such arthropods, especially seasonally, their full supercooling ability is rarely tested.

Humidity has a large impact on the distribution and abundance of terrestrial invertebrates, but the molecular mechanisms governing drought resistance are not fully understood. Some attention has been given to the role of the heat shock response as a component of desiccation tolerance, but recent focus has been on the chaperone-like LEA (late embryogenesis abundant) proteins in anhydrobiotic animals. This study investigates the expression of putative LEA proteins as well as the heat shock protein Hsp70 during drought stress in soil and surface dwelling species of Collembola (springtails). In silico analysis of four EST candidates from two species of Collembola showed the presence of a Group 3 LEA protein in Megaphorura arctica. In common with other Group 3 LEA proteins, the new sequence is predicted to be 100% natively unfolded, with a strong degree of lysine and alanine periodicity and with a negative average hydrophobicity of −1.273. The sequence clusters with members of the Group 3 LEA in plants. Furthermore, cross-species Western blotting showed drought-induced expression of putative LEA proteins in six species of Collembola. In the surface dwelling species, Orchesella cincta, degree of dehydration and length of exposure correlated with level of putative LEA protein. Hsp70 was also found to increase in individuals of O. cincta and Folsomia candida that had been exposed to drought conditions for 6 days. These results show the presence of a LEA protein-coding region in Collembola, but also indicate that several proteins are involved in response to dehydration stress, including Hsp70.

The effect of alcohol extract and essential oil from Juniperus sabina L. (Cupressaceae) on the survival and nutrition of the larvae Galleria mellonella L. (Pyralidae) has been studied. It is found that the essential oil has insecticidal, antifeedant, deterrent, and repellent properties. The loss of larvae with topical application of 0.2 μL of essential oil to the dorsal part (contact action) reaches 64.0%. Feeding larvae with food treated with essential oil J. sabina (200 μL of essential oil per 1.5 g of feed) is reduced 2.1 times compared to the control. It is shown that larvae G. mellonella avoid feeding on oil-treated feed for 14 days and actively move in the opposite direction from the treated feed when they are placed in Petri dishes. It has been established that vapors of essential oil suppress the development of larvae G. mellonella even when fed with untreated food—there is a lag in body weight and a delay in molting in the next age. The essential oil J. sabina also exhibits moderate toxicity (20.0%) when the larvae eat the treated food, i.e., possess intestinal action. The alcohol extract of J. sabina at a concentration of 2.5% of active substances (on dry residue) has a negligible effect on the loss of larvae in the case of treated feed (10.0% contact action). With topical application to the dorsal part, the extract causes 20.0% insect death. An alcohol extract of J. sabina does not elicit any antifeedant or repellent properties against larvae; however, a low level of deterrental activity, expressed in suppressing the formation and development of pupae of Galleria mellonella, is noted. Essential oil reduces the percentage of pupated larvae and emitted adults 3 times and the mass of larvae 40.7–48.0% when compared with the control.

Crustose red algae induce substratum-specific settlement, attachment and metamorphosis of the planktonic larvae of Haliotis rufescens Swainson (gastropod mollusc), upon direct contact by the larvae with any of a number of algal species tested. Larvae are not induced by contact with intact foliose red, brown or green macroalgae. Geniculate red algae are only slightly active. Larval settlement and metamorphosis are shown to be triggered by a class of chemical inducers associated with macromolecules and found in extracts of all species of crustose, geniculate, and foliose red algae tested; these inducers are not found in extracts of brown or green macroalgae. The substratum specificity of larval settlement and metamorphosis is shown to result from the unique availability of these inducers at the surfaces of the crustose red algae. Using a newly-developed improved method of purification based upon size-separation by gel-filtration, followed by ion-exchange chromatography over a diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-acrylamide matrix, the principal inducer of Haliotis larval settlement and metamorphosis has been resolved from the red algal phycobiliproteins. Sensitivity of this inducer to reduction in molecular weight by digestion with trypsin demonstrates that this inducer is associated with protein.

Invasion of black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) by larvae of the nose bot flies (Cephenemyia apicata and C. jellisoni) was investigated by obssrving their expulsion by larviparous females and their subsequent activity on the host. The drying uterine fluid encasing larvae ( = larval packet) delays desiccation, ensures adhesion to hairs, and immediately dissolves upon contact with saliva. Contrary to the widely accepted nasal mode of invasion, larvae placed on muzzles of deer crawl ventrally toward the upper lip, enter the mouth, and then crawl caudally along the hard palate or tongue toward the throat. Hair located between the muzzle and nostril prevents larvae from entering the nostrils. A natural per os mode of invasion, heretofore unrecognized, is proposed. This is initiated by: (1) females depositing larval packets on the muzzle of deer, or (2) deer licking larval packets from contaminated areas around the muzzle. The positive thermotropism of larvae is compatible with such a per os mode of entry into the host.

Morphology of the first instar larvae of Collembola has considerably taxonomical and phylogenetic significance. We describe the first instar larvae for the first time in Homidia. External morphology of first instar larvae and adults of Homidia jordanai sp. n. is described based on observations under light and scanning electron microscopes. Most organs of adults bear considerably more setae than the first instar larvae; in addition, first instar larval Homidia lack labial seta R, seta on tenaculum, mucronal spine, and dental spines. The new species is characterized by weakly pigmented body, long antennae subequal to body in length, 1+1 inner macrochaetae on Abd. III, few inner macrochaetae on posterior Abd. IV, and spiny and short seta pi on dental base. Differences between new species and other two similar ones, taxonomical significance of the first instar larvae and the position of Homidia are also discussed.

Four analogous chromenes and benzofurans that are among the major natural products of the genus Encelia were bioassayed for deterrency and toxicity against pest insects. The chromene encecalin has both antifeedant and insecticidal properties towards larvae of the noctuid pests Peridroma saucia and Plusia gamma. In addition to reducing larval growth and decreasing survivorship of neonate larvae fed artificial diets containing encecalin, this chromene was directly insecticidal to neonate larvae after 4 hr using a residue contact bioassay. Topical application of encecalin to third instar larvae of Peridroma led to a reduction in dietary utilization, indicative of a metabolic cost of handling the compound. The demethyl analogue of encecalin is considerably less active, and the benzofurans euparin and methyleuparin, all common constituents of Encelia, were essentially inactive or only weakly active in all bioassays against the insects.

Behavioural interactions between the solitary koinobiont parasitoid,Venturia canescens, and two of its hosts,Plodia interpunctella andCorcyra cephalonica, were investigated. The response of both hosts to simulated antennation using a two-haired brush was examined over instars 3 (L3) to 5 (L5). YoungP. interpunctella larvae predominantly adopted escape tactics (writhe, trash) whereas L5P. interpunctella usually froze after the stimulus was applied. L3C. cephalonica larvae were more aggressive (headrear, flick) thanP. interpunctella in response to the application of the stimulus, but olderC. cephalonica responded less aggressively than in earlier instars. AlthoughV. canescens readily jabbed its ovipositor at both hosts after antennation,P. interpunctella was considerably more susceptible to parasitoid attack thanC. cephalonica, irrespective of size in the final (L5) instar.C. cephalonica, the larger, more aggressive host, actively resisted parasitism whereasP. interpunctella responded much more passively after parasitoid contact. Parasitoids examined and jabbed their ovipositors at dead hosts, but this behaviour was not sustained, implying that host movement stimulates parasitoid attack. On patches containingV. canescens, L5C. cephalonica andP. interpunctella, mostP. interpunctella larvae responded by freezing after parasitoid contact.P. interpunctella that froze usually avoided parasitism, whereas larvae that attempted to escape by crawling were pursued with vigour byV. canescens and usually parasitized. Irrespective of behaviour after parasitoid contact,C. cephalonia displayed more aggressive behaviour and had much greater success in warding off parasitoid attack. Host acceptance byV. canescens is clearly affected by the size and species of the host it attacks. The influence of host defensive behaviour is discussed in relation to the evolution of parasitoid counter-defences and oviposition strategies.
