We demonstrate by mathematical analysis and systematic computer simulations that redistribution can lead to sustainable growth in a society. In accordance with economic models of risky human capital, we assume that dynamics of human capital is modeled as a multiplicative stochastic process which, in the long run, leads to the destruction of individual human capital. When agents are linked by fully redistributive taxation the situation might turn to individual growth in the long run. We consider that a government collects a proportion of income and reduces it by a fraction as costs for administration (efficiency losses). The remaining public good is equally redistributed to all agents. Sustainable growth is induced by redistribution despite the losses from the random growth process and despite administrative costs. Growth results from a portfolio effect. The findings are verified for three different tax schemes: proportional tax, taking proportionally more from the rich, and proportionally more from the poor. We discuss which of these tax schemes performs better with respect to maximize growth under a fixed rate of administrative costs, and the governmental income. This leads us to general conclusions about governmental decisions, the relation to public good games with free riding, and the function of taxation in a risk-taking society.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo report a case of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in a young patient with Turner syndrome (TS) receiving growth hormone therapy and to emphasize the importance of keeping this orthopedic condition in mind during management of this patient group.MethodsClinical, laboratory, and radiographic findings are presented, and risk factors for slipped capital femoral epiphysis are discussed.ResultsA child with TS presented for medical assessment because of a limp but with no history of trauma or febrile illness. Growth hormone therapy had been administered for 1 year because of her short stature. Physical examination and pelvic radiography of the patient showed the presence of bilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis. She underwent bilateral pinning in situ, and growth hormone therapy was terminated. At follow-up after more than 2 years, no sequelae were noted.ConclusionPatients with TS are at high risk for developing certain orthopedic conditions, such as slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Furthermore, slipped capital femoral epiphysis is a known complication of growth hormone therapy in growing children. A limp, hip pain, knee pain, or thigh pain might be a symptom of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in patients with TS, especially those receiving growth hormone therapy. Because the ferret is being used increasingly in inhalation toxicology and lung physiology studies, it is necessary to better understand the airway structure of its tracheobronchial tree. Previously published information does not include dimensions of bronchi and bronchioles in either adult or growing ferrets. The airway structure of interest for calculating inhaled particle deposition patterns includes airway lengths, diameters and branching angles in each generation. Measurements of these dimensions were obtained for several selected airway paths on replica casts. Casts were made in-situ in four male litter mates age 14 hours, 9.5 days, 16.5 days and 56 days. These data demonstrate, that as with human lung growth, body length at a given age is a good predictor of airway lengths and diameters. Airway branch angles do not appear to change significantly during growth. Sufficient measurements were made to provide dimensions of a typical tracheobronchial pathway for this species. This pathway begins with the trachea and ends at the terminal bronchiole. The morphometric data were not sufficient to determine whether or not the number of tracheobronchial generations increase or decrease postnatally.  相似文献

Monodus subterraneus is a microalga, which is known for its high eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5omega3) content. To produce EPA commercially, high volumetric productivities of microalgae are required. These high productivities can be reached in flat panel photobioreactors with small optical paths that have to be operated at high cell densities (>10 g/L). However, at these cell densities a reduction of productivity is observed. This growth inhibition is probably caused by growth inhibitors released by the microalgae, which have been suggested to be fatty acids. Our aim was to investigate if free fatty acids produced by M. subterraneus inhibited growth of this species. Therefore a bioassay was developed and saturated, unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fatty acids occurring in Monodus were tested on their growth inhibiting properties. Growth of M. subterraneus was completely inhibited at a saturated concentration (96 microM) of palmitoleic acid (16:1omega7). But, the saturated fatty acid palmitic acid (16:0) and the mono-saturated oleic acid (18:1omega9) were much stronger inhibitors. Growth was inhibited for 50% already at concentrations of 0.4 microM 16:0 and 3 microM 18:1omega9, respectively. These fatty acids probably cause the growth inhibition in high cell density cultures of M. subterraneus.  相似文献

The major role of RecA is thought to be in helping repair and restart stalled replication forks. During exponential growth, Bacillus subtilis recA cells exhibited few microscopically observable nucleoid defects. However, the efficiency of plating was about 12% of that of the parent strain. A substantial and additive defect in viability was also seen for addB and recF mutants, suggesting a role for the corresponding recombination paths during normal growth. Upon entry into stationary phase, a subpopulation (approximately 15%) of abnormally long cells and nucleoids developed in B. subtilis recA mutants. In addition, recA mutants showed a delay in, and a diminished capacity for, effecting prespore nucleoid condensation.  相似文献

The purpose of the study is to develop current reference growth centiles for Turkish children and adolescents. A cross-sectional growth survey was conducted on 1.427 (709 boys and 718 girls) healthy schoolchildren aged 6-17 years in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. As an indicator of socio-economic status, the occupation of the parents was recorded. Growth references of height, weight, body mass index (BMI), sitting height, iliospinal height, relative iliospinal height and relative sitting height were constructed by the LMS method. Sex differences, association of parental occupation with height and BMI standard deviation scores were assessed by analyses of variance. Results showed significant sexual dimorphism for height, weight, sitting height and iliospinal height (p<0.001). Significant effect of socio-economic background was found on height and BMI. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was found using the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) reference criteria 22.4% and 5.6% in boys and 21.2% and 3% in girls. Present results demonstrated an increment during the last three decades in height, leg length and weight curves which is more prominent in boys, but not in the sitting height. This positive secular change appears to be a logical outcome of the gradual changes in nutrition, health care and education, and environmental and economic conditions.  相似文献

Constructing an economic growth model comprising dual resource and environmental constraints by introducing both environmental quality and non-renewable resources as endogenous factors also introducing the production and utility functions. This was used to systematically analyze the endogenous mechanism through factors such as non-renewable resource consumption, environmental pollution externalities, the accumulation of physical capital, human capital development, and endogenous technological advancement could influence long-term economic growth. The basic conclusion of the model suggests that under both resource and environmental constraints, it is investment in both human capital and research & innovation that is the main driving and determining factor for long-term sustainable economic growth. The optimal development strategy of economic sustainability can be achieved through supporting human capital accumulation and technological innovation activities, promoting the advancement of clean production technologies, and formulating stringent environmental standards, as well as strengthening the society’s awareness of the environment and sustainable development.  相似文献

Influence of growth temperature on the capacity of the mitochondrial alternative pathway of electron transport was investigated using etiolated corn (Zea mays L.) seedlings. These seedlings were grown to comparable size in either a warm (30°C) or a cold (13°C) temperature regime, and then their respiration rates were measured as O2 uptake at 25°C. The capacity of the alternative pathway (KCN-insensitive O2 uptake) was found essentially to double in shoots of cold-grown seedlings. This increased capacity slowly developed over several days growth in the cold, but was lost within 1 day when the seedlings were exposed to a warm regime. When mitochondria were isolated from the shoots of these seedlings, a greater potential for flow through the alternative path was observed in mitochondria from the cold-grown seedlings with all substrates used (an average increase of 84%). Using exogenous NADH as the substrate, the effect of the electrochemical gradient on measurable capacities of the cytochrome and alternative pathways was investigated in mitochondria from both etiolated seedlings and thermogenic spadices. The uncoupler FCCP (p-trifluoromethoxycarbonylcyanide phenylhydrazone) was used to diminish the electrochemical gradient when desired. In corn (Zea mays L.) shoot and mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) hypocotyl mitochondria, which have relatively low capacities of the alternative pathway, increased flow through the cytochrome chain in the absence of the electrochemical gradient was found not to influence the potential for flow through the alternative path. However, in mitochondria from skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus L.) and voodoo lily (Sauromatum guttatum Schott) spadices, which have high capacities of the alternative pathway, increased flow through the cytochrome chain in the absence of the gradient occurred at the expense of flow through the alternative pathway. These results suggest that in mitochondria of thermogenic spadices, the combined capacities of the cytochrome and alternative paths exceed the capacity of the exogenous NADH dehydrogenase. The effect of assay pH on measurable capacities of the cytochrome and alternative paths was determined over a pH range of 5.6 to 8.8 using exogenous NADH as the mitochondrial substrate. When the electrochemical gradient was present, it limited the electron transport rate and little effect of assay pH was observed. However, when formation of the gradient was prevented through inclusion of FCCP, measurable capacities of the cytochrome and alternative paths were found to be greatly influenced by pH. During pre-synaptic embryonic development, neuronal processes traverse short distances to reach their targets via growth cone. Over time, neuronal somata are separated from their axon terminals due to skeletal growth of the enlarging organism (Weiss 1941; Gray, Hukkanen et al. 1992). This mechanotransduction induces a secondary mode of neuronal growth capable of accommodating continual elongation of the axon (Bray 1984; Heidemann and Buxbaum 1994; Heidemann, Lamoureux et al. 1995; Pfister, Iwata et al. 2004).Axon Stretch Growth (ASG) is conceivably a central factor in the maturation of short embryonic processes into the long nerves and white matter tracts characteristic of the adult nervous system. To study ASG in vitro, we engineered bioreactors to apply tension to the short axonal processes of neuronal cultures (Loverde, Ozoka et al. 2011). Here, we detail the methods we use to prepare bioreactors and conduct ASG. First, within each stretching lane of the bioreactor, neurons are plated upon a micro-manipulated towing substrate. Next, neurons regenerate their axonal processes, via growth cone extension, onto a stationary substrate. Finally, stretch growth is performed by towing the plated cell bodies away from the axon terminals adhered to the stationary substrate; recapitulating skeletal growth after growth cone extension.Previous work has shown that ASG of embryonic rat dorsal root ganglia neurons are capable of unprecedented growth rates up to 10mm/day, reaching lengths of up to 10cm; while concurrently resulting in increased axonal diameters (Smith, Wolf et al. 2001; Pfister, Iwata et al. 2004; Pfister, Bonislawski et al. 2006; Pfister, Iwata et al. 2006; Smith 2009). This is in dramatic contrast to regenerative growth cone extension (in absence of mechanical stimuli) where growth rates average 1mm/day with successful regeneration limited to lengths of less than 3cm (Fu and Gordon 1997; Pfister, Gordon et al. 2011). Accordingly, further study of ASG may help to reveal dysregulated growth mechanisms that limit regeneration in the absence of mechanical stimuli.  相似文献

本研究运用Logistic、Gompertz和Bertalanffy三种非线性模型对不同性别河北柴鸡早期生长规律和生长曲线进行分析及拟合比较.结果表明,3种曲线模型拟合度均达到0.99以上,但Gompertz曲线模型在拟合度和预测极限生长量、拐点周龄和最大周增重等方面相对较好.进一步分析表明,河北柴鸡公鸡的极限体重和拐点体重均高于母鸡,拐点周龄性别间差异不大,公鸡最大周增重与实际观测值接近.本文有助于了解不同性别河北柴鸡各自的生长模式及其对营养、环境的需求,为开展规模化饲养提供参考.  相似文献

To achieve its maximum organ growth potential, an organ mustgrow at its potential relative growth rate (RGR) throughoutdevelopment. When resource availability limits growth, the RGRis reduced below the potential RGR. This study examines whether,following a period of resource-limited growth, the RGR is ableto increase to the potential RGR when sufficient resources areavailable. Fruit RGRs of a late maturing peach cultivar wereexamined following removal of most of the fruits (heavy thinning)from previously unthinned trees in Apr., May, and Jun. The fruitRGRs after imposition of the thinning treatments were higherthan those on unthinned trees during source-limited periodsof the growing season, suggesting that fruit RGR can increasein response to increased resource availability. In general,the RGRs of fruits of trees thinned in Apr., May, and Jun. didnot exceed those of fruits on trees thinned at bloom, suggestingthat heavy thinning at bloom provides a reasonable estimateof the potential RGR. There were times, however, when the effectsof competition with vegetative sinks were apparent, suggestingthat the RGR of fruits on trees that were heavily thinned atbloom may underestimate the potential RGR during these times.The absolute growth rates of fruits on thinned trees were greaterthan those on unthinned trees, but generally were not greaterthan those on trees that were thinned at bloom, suggesting thatpeach fruits are unable to recover potential growth lost duringresource-limited growth periods.Copyright 1995, 1999 AcademicPress Prunus persica (L.) Remediation of the soil beneath closed animal waste lagoons is an important issue, particularly for lagoons in environmentally sensitive regions. Few studies address the possibility of using plants to remediate these soils. The objectives of this research were to determine whether barley (Hor-deum vulgare L.), a salt-tolerant crop, would grow in lagoon soil and to determine the effect of plant residue amendments on barley growth and soil physical properties. The lagoon soil was collected from a closed swine lagoon. Oat-straw and corn-cob residues were added at rates of 0 (control), 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75?g/kg lagoon soil. Barley grew in all soils, including the soil with no residues. Average grain yield of plants in pots with oat straw was more than twice that of plants in pots with corn cobs (10.7?g/pot and 4.5?g/pot, respectively). Bulk density and oxygen diffusion rate decreased with increasing amounts of residue in the soil. Infiltration was lower in pots with oat straw than in pots with corn cobs. Irrigation water moved rapidly through macropores visible in the soil with corn cobs. The soil amended with corn cobs retained less water, causing poor growth of the barley. The results showed that corn-cob residue created preferential flow paths in the lagoon soil.  相似文献

Cardiac size can be regulated by the balance in activity between cardiac growth factors and inhibiting factors, chalones. This study was undertaken to verify the role of the cardiac growth factor and its purification from hypertrophied hearts. For this propose the hypertrophied hearts of renovascular hypertensive rats were used. The purification was made by using an isoelectric focusing chromatography and the HPLC method. We examined the cardiac growth effect of the isolated fractions with cultured chicken embryonic cardiac myocytes. Simultaneously, the influence of these fractions on the cardiac cell cycle was examined by DNA analysis with the flow cytometric method. If the hearts were overloaded due to hypertension, the growth of the cardiac size could be induced by increased the level of five proteins with different molecular weight and with an isoelectric point of 8.3. The significant growth activities were observed at these five proteins compared to the absence of the fractions. For the appearance of these growth effect, it is necessary that the structure of the protein is there fundamentally as a form with a molecular weight of 27 k dalton. After addition of these isolated fractions, BrdU content is S and G2 phases by flow cytometry was increased. This change indicates that the cardiac myocytes are stimulated in form DNA synthesis.  相似文献

PC12 cells possess specific receptors for both nerve growth factor and epidermal growth factor, and by an unknown mechanism, nerve growth factor is able to attenuate the propagation of a mitogenic response to epidermal growth factor. The differentiation response of PC12 cells to nerve growth factor, therefore, predominates over the proliferative response to epidermal growth factor. We have observed that the addition of nerve growth factor to PC12 cells rapidly produces a decrease in surface 125I-epidermal growth factor binding capacity. Unlike previously described nerve growth factor effects on 125I-epidermal growth factor binding capacity, which required several days of nerve growth factor exposure, the decreases we report occur within minutes of nerve growth factor addition: A 50% decrease in 125I-epidermal growth factor binding capacity is evident at 10 min. This rapid nerve growth factor response is concentration dependent; inhibition of 125I-epidermal growth factor binding is detectable at nerve growth factor levels as low as 0.2 ng/ml and is maximal at approximately 50 ng/ml, consistent with known ranges of biological activity. No demonstrable differences in the rate of epidermal growth factor receptor synthesis or degradation were observed in cells acutely exposed to nerve growth factor. Scatchard analysis revealed that acute nerve growth factor treatment decreased the number of both high- and low-affinity 125I-epidermal growth factor binding sites, while the receptor affinity remained unchanged. We have also investigated the involvement of various potential intracellular mediators of nerve growth factor action and of known intracellular modulatory systems of the epidermal growth factor receptor for their capacity to participate in this nerve growth factor activity.  相似文献

We have analyzed the growth of axons in the wings of the mutants Hairy wing and hairy of Drosophila melanogaster. These mutants produce many supernumerary bristle organs and sensilla campaniformia, whose axons grow between the two wing epithelia and can be visualized in both pupal and adult stages. The sensory axons of wild-type animals follow two paths in the wing, within longitudinal veins L1 and L3, and always grow with a distal to proximal polarity. In the mutants, all axons following these two paths likewise grow with correct polarity. Axons elsewhere in the wing, however, are found to grow in many different directions, including from proximal to distal and hence directly away from the central nervous system. A variety of patterns of axon growth and fasciculation are seen in different individuals. Only if the supernumerary axons encounter the two normal paths do they reliably grow toward the base of the wing. We conclude that these two paths provide polarity information for axon growth, information which is either not used or not available elsewhere in the wing in spite of the obvious morphological polarization of every epithelial cell. The time course of neural differentiation suggests that the normal sensory cells of mutant wings, which grow axons relatively early, may be the source of polarity information for the later-differentiating supernumerary cells.  相似文献
