1. Exudates from predators often elicit early maturation in Daphnia, which may protect them from predation. Diel vertical migration (DVM) is also a predator-avoidance device and affects life history traits because of the variable temperature experienced during migration. This study asks, therefore, how do these two effects interact and what are the net costs and benefits of the two defences combined? 2. Key life history features were studied in a two factorial life table experiment in a monoclonal cohort of Daphnia magna to quantify the costs of predator-induced defences. 3. The costs of DVM, associated with low temperature, yielded a 30% decrease in the intrinsic rate of population increase. This was caused by later maturation and longer egg development time, despite a higher fecundity. 4. Chemical information that predators were present resulted in smaller, more numerous offspring, but had no significant effect on size and age at first reproduction. The costs of induction were therefore associated with smaller, and thus presumably lower quality, offspring. 5. Changes in life history induced by fish exudates were independent of the shifts caused by low temperature. 6. The measure of fitness chosen to assess the costs of induced defences is important because the costs often depend on the environment. 相似文献

Cladoceran populations can respond to changingpredation regimes by a phenotypical response as wellas by shifts in genotype frequencies. In this study,we investigated the phenotypic plasticity exhibited bylife history traits of D. galeata in response tothe presence of predator kairomones, as well as theextent to which natural selection may act on thesetraits and their phenotypic plasticity. In alife-table experiment, seven clones of a natural D. galeata population were subjected to kairomonesfrom fish (Perca), from an invertebrate predator(Chaoborus) or a mixture of both. Life historytraits were affected by the kairomones of bothpredators, but effects of Chaoborus wereneutralised by Perca in the kairomone mix. Noapparent trade-off was found between growth- andreproduction related traits: although daphnids fromthe Chaoborus treatment grew faster thandaphnids from the other treatments, no reduction inthe reproductive output was observed. Broad-senseheritabilities were found to be relatively high forsome life history traits (size at maturity, neonatesize, number of neonates) as well as for thephenotypic plasticity response of these traits. Chronic stress often affects growth and development negatively, and these effects are often mediated via glucocorticoid hormones, which elevate during stress. We investigated latitudinal variation in corticosterone (CORT) response to chronic predator stress in Rana temporaria tadpoles along a 1500‐km latitudinal cline in Sweden tadpoles, in a laboratory experiment. We hypothesized that more time‐constrained high‐latitude populations have evolved a lower CORT response to chronic stress to maintain higher growth under stressful conditions. Southern tadpoles had higher CORT content in response to predators after 1 day of exposure, whereas there was no increase in CORT in the northern populations. Two weeks later, there were no predator‐induced CORT elevations. Artificially elevated CORT levels strongly decreased growth, development and survival in both northern and southern tadpoles. We suggest that the lower CORT response in high‐latitude populations can be connected with avoidance of CORT‐mediated reduction in growth and development, but also discuss other possible explanations. 相似文献

Dicyphus hesperus Knight (Heteroptera: Miridae) is an omnivorous predator used to control pests of greenhouse vegetables. Plant preferences and life history traits were studied using nine plant species: Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (Solanaceae), Capsicum annuum L. (Solanaceae), Verbascum thapsus L. (Scrophulariaceae), Nepeta cataria L. (Lamiaceae), Stachys albotomentosa (Lamiaceae), Nicotiana tabacum L. (Solanaceae), Vicia sativa L. (Fabaceae), Zea mays L. (Gramineae), and Chrysanthemum coronarium L. (Asteraceae). Plants were selected from among potential target crops, natural hosts, plants used for mass rearing, and plants on which D. hesperus has not been reported. Plant preference was measured by multi‐choice host plant selection and oviposition assays. Development and reproduction were measured on each of the plant species on both a plant diet alone and on a plant diet supplemented with Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs. Dicyphus hesperus females and nymphs expressed a preference for some plants over others. Plant preference ranged from low preference plants, such as Z. mays, V. sativa, C. coronarium, and C. annuum, to high preference plants such as V. thapsus, N. tabacum, and S. albotomentosa. When E. kuehniella eggs were supplied, there were few differences in the development time and fecundity of D. hesperus among plants, with the exception of corn and broad bean, where fecundity was lower. On a plant diet alone, nymphs were able to complete their development on V. thapsus, C. annuum, and N. cataria. However, mortality and development time were much lower on V. thapsus than on C. annuum and N. cataria. On most of the plant species D. hesperus did not lay any eggs when fed on a plant diet alone. On V. thapsus, females laid a few eggs and lived longer than when fed on prey. Dicyphus hesperus females tended to prefer host plants on which nymph survival without prey was greatest. 相似文献

1. Temporally constrained environments, such as habitats with short growth seasons or short hydroperiods, cause potentially strong selection on life histories. Depending on the predictability of these events and the extent of spatial and temporal heterogeneity, local populations could become adapted either via a fixed phenotype or via life history plasticity in response to these environmental cues. 2. We used a common garden experiment to investigate microgeographic variation in life history responses to combined changes in photoperiod (ambient/late) and hydroperiod (constant/drying) time constraint cues in an alpine caddisfly (Trichoptera). We compared six populations (three permanent/three temporary streams) originating from a small, alpine floodplain and which spanned an expected gradient in growth period duration (GPD) with distance from glaciers. 3. We made two main predictions in relation to locally varying selection pressures: (i) populations nearest glaciers (shorter GPD and strongest time constraints) should have the fastest development rates and (ii) populations from permanent streams should be less able to respond to drying hydroperiods than populations from temporary streams. 4. All populations and both sexes accelerated development in response to late season photoperiod cues. However, only permanent stream populations showed an increase in development time with increasing GPD, suggesting that other factors were influencing populations in temporary streams. 5. Permanent stream populations showed countergradient variation (genetic and environmental influences were in opposition) in development time, and under‐compensation of growth rates resulted in a converse Bergmann cline in body size (smaller body size along gradients of declining season length). The extent of plasticity in response to hydroperiod, and the combined effects of both time constraints, differed between populations and sexes, but were not consistent among populations. 6. Taken together, our results suggest adaptive plasticity in response to season length. The lack of a predictable pattern in response to hydroperiod may be due to gene flow or weak selection. We conclude that spatially structured populations can strongly differ in phenotypic plasticity even at microgeographic scales. 相似文献

Predation by visual predators is often affected by light conditions and may therefore exhibit strong diel variation. The dominant predators on grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, are finfish predators that are thought to locate their prey by visual cues. We examined the response of grass shrimp to diel variation in predation risk in the nearshore shallow waters of the Chesapeake Bay. We used diel shoreline seines to assess the relative abundance of predators. We assessed the relative risk of predation with shrimp tethered at refuge (30 cm) and nonrefuge (60 cm) depths. To measure grass shrimp response to predation risk, we used dipnets to monitor habitat use. Four predominantly visual predators dominated the shoreline seine catches, Fundulus heteroclitus, Micropogonias undulatus, Morone americana and Morone saxatilis. Total predator abundance had a diel component, with dramatic nighttime decreases in total abundance, whereas guild composition and relative abundance remained unchanged. Relative predation risk for tethered shrimp exhibited significant time by habitat interaction. During the day, depth negatively affected survivorship of tethered shrimp while at night overall survivorship increased and there was no effect of depth. Shrimp habitats use reflected diel predation risks. Abundances in the near shore were highest during the day with decreased abundances at night. Together, the seine and tethering data highlight the importance for a refuge (e.g., shallow water) from predation during the daytime and a relaxation of predation pressure at night. 相似文献

Demographic parameters of wild chimpanzees at Bossou, Guinea, are presented and compared with those of other populations. The population size of Bossou chimpanzees has been stable over the last 26 years, except during two incidents of partial deforestation. The annual birth rate for a female (mean = 0.194, but 0.165 when the infant survived more than 4 years) and interbirth interval are not much different from those of other study sites. The primiparous age of Bossou chimpanzees, however, is far younger (mean = 10.9 years) than for all other known wild chimpanzee populations. The infant and juvenile survival rate is also the highest (female = 0.64, male = 0.52 for the first 8 years). As a result, the lifetime reproductive success of Bossou chimpanzees is estimated to be highest among long-term study sites. The rate of disappearance from Bossou dramatically increases during the adolescent stage, and most young chimpanzees disappear before or around maturation. Probably because the environmental capacity for chimpanzees at Bossou is at its limit, many young independent males, as well as females, have to disperse, though others may die. For chimpanzee alpha males of other populations, mature males may be needed as collaborators to defend resources. In the case of Bossou, however, a lack of adjacent groups, conspecific competitors, predators, and perhaps medium-sized mammals as prey for group hunting may eliminate this need of the alpha male for other males. The reasons why all males of other chimpanzee populations persist in being philopatric for life and maintain kin-related male bonds differing from most mammal species, including humans, are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Wintering Henslow's Sparrows (Ammodramus henslowii) are generally associated with open grasslands. Results of small‐scale, regionally specific studies have not revealed larger‐scale abundance patterns, but they have shown regional differences in habitat selection. Our objective was to quantify Henslow's Sparrow abundance and vegetation associations across Louisiana, an area that includes multiple types of grassland habitats. Bird densities in longleaf pine savannas of eastern and western Louisiana were over 1.5 times higher than in northern prairies and over 13 times higher than at a site in southwestern Louisiana. The responses of Henslow's Sparrows to fire differed between eastern and western savannas, with abundance increasing three fold over the first 3 yrs after fire in the west, and decreasing three fold over that interval in the east. In both areas, habitat became unsuitable by about 5 yrs after fire, probably due to woody encroachment and loss of herbaceous plants. For sites that contained Henslow's Sparrows at least once during our study, habitat modeling revealed that neither vegetation structure nor plant species composition was important in predicting the occurrence of Henslow's Sparrows within sites or abundance among sites throughout the state, perhaps due to the variety of habitats sampled. Our results suggest that longleaf pine savannas are the most important grasslands for wintering Henslow's Sparrows in Louisiana and that overwintering habitat is probably selected based on regionally specific vegetation features. Optimal fire intervals may vary regionally, particularly between mesic flatwoods savannas and drier upland savannas, perhaps due to different rates of biomass accumulation. Management for Henslow's Sparrows should be based on region‐specific studies, recognizing that appropriate fire regimes may vary among regions. 相似文献

Although generalist predators catch a great diversity of prey species, foraging theory has mostly been concerned with quantitative aspects and neglected questions about the nutrient quality of prey. Here, we test the hypothesis that the life history of a trap-building predator is affected by both prey availability and by the nutrient quality of prey. Under controlled laboratory conditions, orb-weaving spiders ( Zygiella x-notata ) were raised from hatchlings to maturity on prey of different nutrient quality and in different amounts. Both prey nutrient quality and availability had significant but different effects on many important life history traits, such as instar duration, number of instars used in the development, body weight at maturation and development time. Prey availability was especially important for growth rates whereas prey nutrient quality had the most severe effects on juvenile survivorship and female fecundity. Furthermore, while prey of low quality tended to reduce the number of instars used in the development, prey availability induced sex-specific responses in instar numbers. Thus, both prey nutrient quality and availability may be important factors shaping the evolution of life history traits in generalist predators. 相似文献

Juvenile loggerhead sea turtles spend more than a decade in the open ocean before returning to neritic waters to mature and reproduce. It has been assumed that this transition from an oceanic to neritic existence is a discrete ontogenetic niche shift. We tested this hypothesis by tracking the movements of large juveniles collected in a neritic foraging ground in North Carolina, USA. Our work shows that the shift from the oceanic to neritic waters is both complex and reversible; some individuals move back into coastal waters and then return to the open ocean for reasons that are still unclear, sometimes for multiple years. These findings have important consequences for efforts to protect these threatened marine reptiles from mortality in both coastal and open-ocean fisheries. 相似文献

Summary Dimensionless numbers, made up from components of life history as defined by growth, mortality and maturation, may provide fresh insights into life history evolution. Most studies have previously shown that these numbers are more or less constants within taxa. The variation between taxa may clarify the evolution of different life histories. We examine the variation in three dimensionless numbers using data from 29 populations of Brown TroutSalmo trutta from Norway, and find that the dimensionless numbers are not constants for the Brown Trout populations. We find that the relationship betweenK of the von Bertalanffy growth equation and the mortality rate (M) increased with increasing growth rate. Also, relative length at maturity (L
/L
inf) increased with increasing asymptotic length (L
inf). We suggest that more such data should be collected from a large number of species and taxonomic groups, to allow a more detailed assessment of why these dimensionless numbers appear to be constants in some taxa and not in others. 相似文献

Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in Toolik Lake are tightly coupled to the benthos, since they have no pelagic forage fishes. Slimy sculpins (Cottus cognatus) are a prey of lake trout and the soft sediment chironomids are an important prey for the sculpin. Our previous work showed
that the median size of lake trout in Toolik Lake had decreased significantly between 1977 and 1986, and smaller lake trout
are likely to be less effective as sculpin predators. Using our historic data on the slimy sculpin population from 1978, we
took advantage of the recent change in the predator community to examine for subsequent changes in the sculpin community.
Between 1978 and 1987, the percentage of slimy sculpin caught in the soft sediments has increased (25% to 39.5%). In 1987
there was a significant difference in the mean weight of sculpin caught on different substrates. The mean individual weight
of sculpins increased from the nearshore rock area to the rock/soft-sediment interface to the soft sediments. There was no
difference in mean individual weight with habitat in 1978. The mean total length at age for slimy sculpins during this time
has also increased significantly. We suggest that the risk of predation while foraging in the soft sediments has declined.
The increased use of the soft sediment area appears to have contributed to their increased growth, likely due to greater food

Abstract Immune defense may vary as a result of trade-offs with other life-history traits or in parallel with variation in antigen levels in the environment. We studied lark species (Alaudidae) in the Arabian Desert and temperate Netherlands to test opposing predictions from these two hypotheses. Based on their slower pace of life, the trade-off hypothesis predicts relatively stronger immune defenses in desert larks compared with temperate larks. However, as predicted by the antigen exposure hypothesis, reduced microbial abundances in deserts should result in desert-living larks having relatively weaker immune defenses. We quantified host-independent and host-dependent microbial abundances of culturable microbes in ambient air and from the surfaces of birds. We measured components of immunity by quantifying concentrations of the acute-phase protein haptoglobin, natural antibody-mediated agglutination titers, complement-mediated lysis titers, and the microbicidal ability of whole blood. Desert-living larks were exposed to significantly lower concentrations of airborne microbes than temperate larks, and densities of some bird-associated microbes were also lower in desert species. Haptoglobin concentrations and lysis titers were also significantly lower in desert-living larks, but other immune indexes did not differ. Thus, contrary to the trade-off hypothesis, we found little evidence that a slow pace of life predicted increased immunological investment. In contrast, and in support of the antigen exposure hypothesis, associations between microbial exposure and some immune indexes were apparent. Measures of antigen exposure, including assessment of host-independent and host-dependent microbial assemblages, can provide novel insights into the mechanisms underlying immunological variation. 相似文献

A central issue in predator–prey interactions is how predator associated chemical cues affect the behaviour and life history of prey. In this study, we investigated how growth and behaviour during ontogeny of a damselfly larva (Coenagrion hastulatum) in high and low food environments was affected by the diet of a predator (Aeshna juncea). We reared larvae in three different predator treatments; no predator, predator feeding on conspecifics and predator feeding on heterospecifics. We found that, independent of food availability, larvae displayed the strongest anti-predator behaviours where predators consumed prey conspecifics. Interestingly, the effect of predator diet on prey activity was only present early in ontogeny, whereas late in ontogeny no difference in prey activity between treatments could be found. In contrast, the significant effect of predator diet on prey spatial distribution was unaffected by time. Larval size was affected by both food availability and predator diet. Larvae reared in the high food treatment grew larger than larvae in the low food treatment. Mean larval size was smallest in the treatment where predators consumed prey conspecifics, intermediate where predators consumed heterospecifics and largest in the treatment without predators. The difference in mean larval size between treatments is probably an effect of reduced larval feeding, due to behavioural responses to chemical cues associated with predator diet. Our study suggests that anti-predator responses can be specific for certain stages in ontogeny. This finding shows the importance of considering where in its ontogeny a study organism is before results are interpreted and generalisations are made. Furthermore, this finding accentuates the importance of long-term studies and may have implications for how results generated by short-term studies can be used. 相似文献

1. Food selection experiments were conducted by acclimating calanoid copepods (Eudiaptomus spp.) in suspensions of natural seston and then adding pairs of dual-labelled (14C/32P) algae. Each feeding trial measured selectivity between a small, high-quality reference alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardii, and a test alga that differed in size and/or food quality. The influence of food concentration on food selection was tested by using seston from two lakes with contrasting food abundance and by including treatments with filtered lake water ('starved’) and seston diluted with filtered water or enriched with cultured algae. 2. Copepods that had been starved or acclimated to natural seston with low food abundance preferred the larger of two labelled algae, regardless of the nutritional quality of the algae. In agreement with the predictions of an optimal diet model, however, copepods that were acclimated to high food conditions discriminated against low-quality foods, including digestion-resistant algae and dead algae. 3. Selectivity coefficients showed excellent agreement with a previous study involving the same taxa of copepods and labelled algae but in which the copepods had been acclimated to pairs of cultured algae rather than natural seston. Thus, these comparisons emphasize the importance of food availability in modulating copepod selectivity for foods that differ in nutritional quality and suggest that such behaviour occurs in nature. 相似文献

Our understanding of latitudinal life history patterns may benefit by jointly considering age and mass at maturity and growth rate. Additional insight may be gained by exploring potential constraints through pushing growth rates to their maximum and scoring physiological cost‐related variables. Therefore, we reared animals of a univoltine Spanish and Belgian population and of a semivoltine Swedish population of the damselfly Enallagma cyathigerum (spanning a latitude gradient of ca 2350 km) in a common environment from the eggs until adult emergence and exposed them to a transient starvation period to induce compensatory growth. Besides age and mass at maturity and growth rate we also scored investment in energy storage (i.e. triglycerides) and immune function (i.e. total activity of phenoloxidase). At emergence, body mass was greater in Spain and Sweden and lower in Belgium, suggesting a genetic component for the U‐shaped latitudinal pattern that was found also in a previous study based on field‐collected adults. The mass difference between univoltine populations can be explained by the shorter development time in the Belgian population, and this despite a higher growth rate, a pattern consistent with undercompensating countergradient variation. In line with the assumed shorter growth seasons, Belgian and Swedish animals showed higher routine growth rates and compensatory growth after transient starvation. Despite a strong link with metabolic rates (as measured by oxygen consumption) populations with higher routine growth rates had no lower fat content and had higher immune function (i.e. immune function decreased from Sweden to Spain), which was unexpected. Rapid compensatory growth did, however, result in a lowered immune function. This may contribute to the absence of perfect compensating countergradient variation in the Belgian population and the lowest routine growth rates in the Spanish population.
