The first international Ustilago conference was held in Marburg, Germany from August 22 to 25, 2002. The meeting focused on molecular genetic and cell biology research with Ustilago maydis, the causative agent of common smut of maize. This fungus has emerged as a useful experimental organism for studying the biology of basidiomycete fungi, with a particular emphasis on the interaction of the fungus with the host plant. Thus presentations at the meeting covered the range of current research topics including DNA recombination and repair, mating and sexual development, phytopathology, cell biology, the cell cycle, signaling, and genomics. The meeting also highlighted historical aspects of U. maydis research with presentations by pioneers in the field including Robin Holiday (recombination), Yigal Koltin (killer phenomenon) and Peter Day (plant pathology).  相似文献

The Keystone Symposium entitled 'The Life of a Stem Cell: from Birth to Death' was held at Squaw Valley, CA, USA in March 2012. The meeting brought together researchers from across the world and showcased the most recent developments in stem cell research. The Sixth Annual Clinical Applications of Cytometry Meeting was held September 11-14, 1991, in Charleston, SC. Attendance reached a record 470. The meeting provides a forum for interactions among investigators who utilize cytometry as a tool in their clinical immunology, cell biology, hematology, and cancer investigations. Clinical laboratory directors and their technical staff find the meeting of practical value because of the presentation of new applications that they can take home to their own laboratories. The emphasis of the meeting is on advances in the application of cytometry to clinical problems. Often, advances result from new dyes or reagents or improved instrumentation. Sometimes they result from advances in biology that make the studies possible. Occasionally a new way of looking at the same data provides a useful answer. In every case, the effort is to provide a reliable, straightforward way to quantitate biologic information in order to provide improved diagnosis or treatment of human disease.  相似文献

A recent meeting entitled Frontiers in Live Cell Imaging was attended by more than 400 cell biologists, physicists, chemists, mathematicians, and engineers. Unlike typical special topics meetings, which bring together investigators in a defined field primarily to review recent progress, the purpose of this meeting was to promote cross-disciplinary interactions by introducing emerging methods on the one hand and important biological applications on the other. The goal was to turn live cell imaging from a “technique” used in cell biology into a new exploratory science that combines a number of research fields.  相似文献

A 'traditional' Wnt meeting, the first of which occurred over two decades ago as a meeting of the laboratories of Harold Varmus and Roel Nusse, was held at the University of California, San Diego, in June 2007. Organized by Karl Willert, Anthony Wynshaw-Boris and Katherine Jones, the meeting was attended by nearly 400 scientists interested in ;all things Wnt', including Wnt signal transduction mechanisms, and Wnt signaling in evolutionary and developmental biology, stem cell biology, regeneration and disease. Themes that dominated the meeting included the need for precise control over each step of the signal transduction mechanism and developing therapeutics for diseases caused by altered Wnt-signaling.  相似文献

A fusion of cutting-edge research in cell biology, developmental biology and immunology made the recent workshop on Membrane Dynamics in Endocytosis an outstanding success. Members of an increasingly diverse community converged upon the small town of Sant Feliu de Guixols on the coast of Spain, between September 17-22, 2005, to discuss common themes emerging from their studies on membrane transport. Organized by Margaret Robinson (Cambridge, UK) and Howard Riezman (Geneva, Switzerland), the meeting covered diverse topics that highlighted essential roles for endocytosis during cell growth, development and parasitic invasion.  相似文献

Caenorhabditis elegans is widely known as a model organism for cell, molecular, developmental and neural biology, but it is also being used for evolutionary studies. A recent meeting of researchers in Portugal covered topics as diverse as phylogenetics, genetic mapping of quantitative and qualitative intraspecific variation, evolutionary developmental biology and population genetics. Here, we summarize the main findings of the meeting, which marks the formal birth of a research community dedicated to Caenorhabditis species evolution.  相似文献

The French and Japanese Developmental Biology Societies, teaming up with Human Frontier Science Program, were eager to meet back in person in November 2022 in the lovely city of Strasbourg. Top scientists in the developmental biology field from France and Japan, but also from United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland or Germany shared their exciting science during the 4 days of this meeting. Core fields of developmental biology such as morphogenesis, patterning, cell identity, and cell state transition, notably at the single cell level, were well represented, and a diversity of experimental models, including plants, animals, and other exotic organisms, as well as some in vitro cellular models, were covered. This event also extended the scope of classic scientific gatherings for two reasons. First the involvement of artists during the preparation of the event and on site. Second, part of the meeting was open for the general public through a series of outreach events, including a music and video presentation through projection mapping at Rohan palace, as well as public lectures.  相似文献

This report summarises the recent “Perspectives in Stem Cell Proteomics” meeting that was held at the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre, Hinxton, UK in March 2009. The aim of the meeting was to explore the current status of proteomics in stem cell biology. Several themes encompassing technological and biological studies demonstrated the close relationship that must exist between the two communities in order to maximise our understanding of stem cell behaviour. Highlights included new methods for induction of pluripotent stem cells, new data sets regarding protein expression and phosphorylation dynamics in differentiating cells and the potential for future exploitation in a therapeutic setting.  相似文献

Natural killer (NK) cells are important members of the innate immune system being involved in the detection and clearance of transformed or virus-infected cells. The 10th meeting of the Society for Natural Immunity was recently held in Cambridge, UK, where leaders from around the globe gathered to discuss the latest developments and understandings in the field of NK cell biology. Among the topics covered in this meeting were NK cell development, the origin of thymic NK cells, contribution of NK cells to viral infections and subsequent tissue damage, crosstalk between NK cells and other immune cells and the role of NK cells at the foetal-maternal interface.  相似文献

Cell biology is being inundated by an avalanche of data from the genomics and proteomics enterprises. The complexity and sheer volume of information threaten to overwhelm the ability of traditional cell biologists to grasp its implications and develop experimentally testable hypotheses. For this reason, some have begun to explore computational approaches towards organizing complex data into quantitative models. This requires communication and collaboration between the biological science community and and the physical and mathematical sciences communities. A recent meeting [The First International Symposium on Computational Cell Biology, Cranwell Resort, Lenox, MA, USA; 4-6 March 2001. Organizers: J.H. Carson, A. Cowan, and L.M. Loew (www.nrcam.uchc.edu/conference).] made a first attempt to bring these two communities together. Three feet of new snow fell during the meeting, but the 125 attendees, an unusual mixture of cell biologists, computer scientists, mathematicians, physicists, and engineers, were having too much fun defining the new field of computational cell biology to notice that they were literally snowed in.  相似文献

The recent FASEB meeting on 'Small GTPases and Cell dynamics' (Snowmass, 6-11 July, 2002) focused on the emerging connections between small GTPases and the actin and tubulin cytoskeletons, advances in understanding where and when these proteins are activated, and their role in directing intracellular traffic and cell polarity in systems ranging from fibroblasts in Petri dishes to neurons in living organisms. The variety and vigor of the presentations showed that this field of cell biology remains a fertile ground for discovery.  相似文献

In 2019 we started a new annual meeting, aimed at bringing together researchers from across the United Kingdom studying cellular microbiology and the cell biology of host‐pathogen interactions. In contrast to large glamourous meetings, featuring the great and the good from across the world, we wanted to create a forum for early career researchers to present their work and enjoy lively discussion. In particular, we hope that focussing on making the meeting accessible, affordable, and informal would help integrate and build the U.K. community working on this exciting topic.  相似文献

The German Society of Parasitology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Parasitologie) was founded in 1960 and its 21st biannual meeting took place in Würzburg, Germany, from March 17 to 20, 2004. Whereas interim meetings that are being held every other year focus on specific topics of parasitology, such as the symposia on "Life in Vacuoles" in 2003 and on "Immunomodulation by Parasites" in 2001, the general biannual meetings cover a wide range of topics. This year's meeting at the University of Würzburg was organised by Klaus Brehm and Matthias Frosch (both at the Institute of Hygiene) and Heidrun Moll (Institute for Molecular Biology of Infectious Diseases). It was attended by more than 500 scientists from 16 countries who presented 181 research projects dealing with the topics defence mechanisms and immunology, genomics and proteomics, epidemiology, cell biology and biochemistry, chemotherapy and vaccines, parasite classification and morphology, vectors, intermediate hosts, and veterinary parasitology. In addition, six plenary lectures highlighted the subjects of comparative nematode genomics, cell biology, immunology, and parasite eradication programmes.  相似文献

A report of the 24th International Conference on Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology, Manchester, UK, 19-24 July 2009.The international yeast meetings are highly interactive conferences attracting scientists from diverse disciplines of fungal research. The 24th yeast meeting held in the University of Manchester presented recent advances ranging from basic cell biology to the use of yeast for industrial purposes and translational research. Here, I summarize a few highlights related to systems and synthetic biology, yeasts as model organisms in gene expression, aging and human disease studies and the use of yeast cells as factories.  相似文献

The EMBO worskhop at the “end of the world’” (al fin del mundo), a meeting on membrane trafficking and its implication for polarity and diseases, took place in the Chilean Patagonia surrounded by the landscapes once witnessed by Charles Darwin. The meeting showcased some of the best membrane trafficking science with an emphasis in neuroscience and disease models. Speakers from Europe, USA, South America and the graduate students behind it; embarked on an enthusiastic and eclectic dialog where a wide range of cell types, model genetic systems, and diseases where discussed. This meeting demonstrated the power of trafficking concepts to integrate diverse biology and to formulate mechanisms of normal and disease cells.  相似文献

The PVC superphylum is a phylogenetically supported collection of various related bacterial phyla that comprise unusual characteristics and traits. The ‘PVC’ abbreviation derives from Planctomycetes, Verrucomicrobia and Chlamydiae as members of this superphylum, while additional bacterial phyla are related. There has recently been increasing and exciting interest in the cell biology, physiology and ecology of members of this superphylum, including evolutionary implications of the complex cell organization of some species. It is timely that international researchers in the PVC superphylum field met to discuss these developments. The first meeting entirely dedicated to those bacteria, the EMBO workshop “PVC superphylum: Exceptions to the bacterial definition” was held at the Heidelberg University to catalyze the formation of a vital scientific community supporting PVC-bacterial research. More than 45 investigators from more than 20 countries (PIs, senior scientists and students) attended the meeting and produced a great starting point for future collaborative research. This Special Issue will focus on the EMBO-PVC meeting. This Perspective briefly summarizes the history of PVC-research, focusing on the key findings and provides a brief summary of the meeting with a focus on the major questions that arose during discussion and that might influence the research in the years to come.  相似文献

The 5th international CD38 meeting, held in Torino, Italy, spanned a range of topics from the role of CD38 as a signaling receptor in lymphocytic tumors to the importance of CD38-derived metabolites in NAD(+) metabolism, calcium signaling, and immune function. This meeting was particularly exciting as data were presented demonstrating that collaborative experiments between enzymologists, biochemists, cell biologists, immunologists, and clinicians have started to unravel the secrets of CD38 biology. It is now clear that all of the products of the CD38 enzyme reaction regulate calcium signal transduction in cell types as diverse as sea urchin oocytes and mammalian lymphocytes. It is also apparent that CD38 plays important immunomodulatory role(s), however there is still much debate on how CD38 mediates its immunoregulatory functions and whether the enzymatic products generated by CD38 are important for immunity. The data presented at this meeting have begun to resolve some of these controversies. First, CD38 regulates the function of leukocytes by enzyme-dependent and enzyme-independent mechanisms. Second, CD38 regulates inflammatory responses by modulating the activity of the responding leukocytes and by altering the activity of non-hematopoietic cells in the inflamed tissue. Finally, crosstalk between CD38 and other NAD(+) utilizing enzymes such as ART2, SIRT1, and PARP-1 impacts NAD(+) homeostasis, inflammation, and immunity. Thus, immunity is regulated by CD38 in multiple and unexpected ways and the new research challenge will be to determine whether we can exploit the complex biology of CD38 to therapeutically regulate the immune system.  相似文献
