If you draw from memory a picture of the front of your childhood home, you will have demonstrated recall. You could also recognize this house upon seeing it. Unlike recognition, recall demonstrates memory for things that are not present. Recall is necessary for planning and imagining, and it can increase the flexibility of navigation, social behavior, and other cognitive skills. Without recall, memory is more limited to recognition of the immediate environment. Amnesic patients are impaired on recall tests [1, 2], and recall performance often declines with aging [3]. Despite its importance, we know relatively little about nonhuman animals' ability to recall information; we lack suitable recall tests for them and depend instead on recognition tests to measure nonhuman memory. Here we report that rhesus monkeys can recall simple shapes from memory and reproduce them on a touchscreen. As in humans [4, 5], monkeys remembered less in recall than recognition tests, and their recall performance deteriorated more slowly. Transfer tests showed that monkeys used a flexible memory mechanism rather than memorizing specific actions for each shape. Observation of recall in Old World monkeys suggests that it has been adaptive for over 30 million years [6] and does not depend on language.  相似文献

In this controlled experiment we examined whether there are content effects in verbal short-term memory and working memory for verbal stimuli. Thirty-seven participants completed forward and backward digit and letter recall tasks, which were constructed to control for distance effects between stimuli. A maximum-likelihood mixed-effects logistic regression revealed main effects of direction of recall (forward vs backward) and content (digits vs letters). There was an interaction between type of recall and content, in which the recall of digits was superior to the recall of letters in verbal short-term memory but not in verbal working memory. These results demonstrate that the recall of information from verbal short-term memory is content-specific, whilst the recall of information from verbal working memory is content-general.  相似文献

This study sought to determine if the ability to label a flavor is associated with an improved ability to recall having tasted the flavor in preschool-aged children. A total of 120 3- to 6-year-old English-speaking children tasted and labeled 20 different flavors, blinded to color. Children's labels for the flavors were scored for consistency and accuracy. Recall for having tasted the flavor was tested. Both labeling ability and recall ability improved rapidly between the ages of 3 and 6 years in this cohort. Regression analysis indicated that independent of the child's age, consistent accurate labeling was positively associated with recall ability. Higher maternal education was an independent and marginal contributor to greater recall ability. The combination of consistent and accurate labeling, age, and maternal education accounted for 28% of the variance in flavor recall ability. Consistent but inaccurate labeling alone contributed little to the variance in flavor recall ability. We conclude from these findings that children's ability to recall having tasted a flavor develops rapidly during the preschool age range and that improved recall ability is associated with the ability to consistently and accurately label the flavor. We conclude that language mediates memory for flavors in young children.  相似文献

The present study explored EEG correlates of dream recall in 17 symptomatic, unmedicated depressed patients and in 19 healthy adults. EEG segments from the last 30 minutes of sleep, from the five minutes following morning awakening, and the absolute difference between sleep and waking EEG were contrasted between the two groups of participants during successful dream recall and during no recall. Period amplitude analysis was used to quantify EEG frequencies. Increased high-frequency beta incidence in the right hemisphere and amplitude in both hemispheres during sleep were associated with dream recall in both patient and control groups. Depressed patients also showed higher delta amplitude in both hemispheres during sleep associated with recall, but this effect did not reach significance. With regard to the changes between sleep and wakefiilness, a smaller change in right hemisphere beta and delta incidence characterized successful recall in healthy controls. By contrast, those with depression showed recall success when the sleep/wake shifts in right hemisphere beta and delta incidence were larger. Recall failure was characterized by small EEG shifts from sleep to wakefulness in the depressed group. The same effects were observed for beta and delta amplitude measures, except that healthy controls showed a large shift in delta amplitude in the sleep-wake transition during successful recall but not during recall failure. Recall in those with depression was associated with a dramatic shift in left hemisphere delta amplitude. These findings provide support for Koukkou and Lehmann's (1983, 1993) state-shift hypothesis of dream recall in healthy controls (except for left hemisphere delta amplitude) but not in the depressed. It appears that in order to recall a dream, depressed patients must undergo larger shifts in brain activity and perhaps a different pattern of reorganization of EEG frequencies than controls. This finding may account for the low rates of recall reported previously in this clinical group.  相似文献

In the legal system, inconsistencies in eyewitness accounts are often used to discredit witnesses’ credibility. This is at odds with research findings showing that witnesses frequently report reminiscent details (details previously unrecalled) at an accuracy rate that is nearly as high as for consistently recalled information. The present study sought to put the validity of beliefs about recall consistency to a test by directly comparing them with actual memory performance in two recall attempts. All participants watched a film of a staged theft. Subsequently, the memory group (N = 84) provided one statement immediately after the film (either with the Self-Administered Interview or free recall) and one after a one-week delay. The estimation group (N = 81) consisting of experienced police detectives estimated the recall performance of the memory group. The results showed that actual recall performance was consistently underestimated. Also, a sharp decline of memory performance between recall attempts was assumed by the estimation group whereas actual accuracy remained stable. While reminiscent details were almost as accurate as consistent details, they were estimated to be much less accurate than consistent information and as inaccurate as direct contradictions. The police detectives expressed a great concern that reminiscence was the result of suggestive external influences. In conclusion, it seems that experienced police detectives hold many implicit beliefs about recall consistency that do not correspond with actual recall performance. Recommendations for police trainings are provided. These aim at fostering a differentiated view on eyewitness performance and the inclusion of more comprehensive classes on human memory structure.  相似文献

Dream Recall Frequency, Attitude Towards Dreams and Openness to Experience   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The question whether personality dimensions explain the interindividual differences in dream recall frequency has often been investigated by dream researchers. The present findings confirm previous research which has shown that traits such as openness-to-experience and thin boundaries correlate substantially with dream recall frequency. However, correlation coefficients are small and are much larger if attitude towards dreams or a scale measuring different aspects of dream recall are considered. Thus, future studies should consider the differentiation between items measuring dream recall and related aspects and items measuring attitudes towards dreams. Schonbar's life-style hypothesis should be revised slightly: not dream recall frequency but attitude towards dreams and the way to deal with dreams are part of a broader life style.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the frequency of dream recall in Chinese people and to develop nonintrusive procedures to facilitate dream recall. Guidelines for remembering dreams (dream recall instructions) were established based on a review of the existing literature on dream recall and its associated factors. The efficacy of the dream recall experience was explored using this procedure in neurologically healthy individuals. One hundred seventy Chinese participants were included in the study: 100 received the dream recall instructions, and 70 did not. The recall instructions were shown to be effective in triggering dream recall in the participants. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The story of our lifetime – our narrative self – is constructed from our autobiographical memories. A central claim of social psychology is that this narrative self is inherently social: When we construct our lives, we do so in a real or imagined interaction. This predicts that self-referential processes which are involved in recall of autobiographical memories overlap with processes involved in social interactions. Indeed, previous functional MRI studies indicate that regions in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) are activated during autobiographical memory recall and virtual communication. However, no fMRI study has investigated recall of autobiographical memories in a real-life interaction. We developed a novel paradigm in which participants overtly reported self-related and other-related memories to an experimenter, whose non-verbal reactions were being filmed and online displayed to the participants in the scanner. We found that recall of autobiographical vs. non-autobiographical memories was associated with activation of the mPFC, as was recall in the social as compared to a non-social control condition; however, both contrasts involved different non-overlapping regions within the mPFC. These results indicate that self-referential processes involved in autobiographical memory recall are different from processes supporting social interactions, and argue against the hypothesis that autobiographical memories are inherently social.  相似文献

Synapses that can be strengthened in temporary and persistent manners by two separate mechanisms are shown to have powerful advantages in neural networks that perform auto-associative recall and recognition. A multiplicative relation between the two weights allows the same set of connections to be used in a closely interactive way for short-term and long-term memory. Algorithms and simulations are described for the storage, consolidation and recall of patterns that have been presented only once to a network. With double modifiability, the short-term performance is dramatically improved, becoming almost independent of the amount of long-term experience. The high quality of short-term recall allows consolidation to take place, with benefits from the selection and optimization of long term engrams to take account of relations between stored patterns. Long-term capacity is greater than short-term capacity, with little or no deficit compared with that obtained with singly modifiable synapses. Long-term recall requires special, simply implemented, procedures for increasing the temporary weights of the synapses being used to initiate recall. A consolidation algorithm is described for improving long-term recall when there is overlap between patterns. Confusional errors are reduced by strengthening the associations between non-overlapping elements in the patterns, in a two-stage process that has several of the characteristics of sleep.  相似文献

Case-control studies on effects of drugs in pregnancy rely heavily on maternal recall. At the Motherisk Program in Toronto we counsel women during early pregnancy on the risk of drug and chemical exposure; subsequently, we follow up the outcome of pregnancy after birth. This cohort has given us an opportunity to assess the magnitude of recall of early pregnancy exposure and determinants likely to affect it in 145 consecutive cases. The mean recall of exposure identity was 62%, while accurate recall of timing of exposure was 37% and of dosage 24%. Exposures that prompted the clinic visit, chronic therapeutic exposures, environmental agents, and known teratogens were recalled significantly better than were other exposures. Accurate report of smoking was significantly higher than of alcohol use (79.4% vs. 59%, respectively, P = .0002). The number of agents consumed by the pregnant woman negatively correlated with her recall; mean recall of 1 agent was 85% vs. only 40% recall of 4 agents. Women greater than or equal to 30 years of age recalled significantly worse (mean +/- SEM, 52 +/- 4%) than women younger than 30 (70 +/- 4%), P = .002) despite a similar mean number of exposures. No difference in mean recall was found between women having normal (n = 112) or adverse pregnancy outcome (n = 33). There was a recall bias in reporting alcohol consumption; postnatally, women with adverse outcome tended to report significantly less than the amount initially reported by them.  相似文献

Background

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) to six months is one of the World Health Organization’s (WHOs) infant and young child feeding (IYCF) core indicators. Single 24 h recall method is currently in use to measure exclusive breastfeeding practice among children of age less than six months. This approach overestimates the prevalence of EBF, especially among small population groups. This justifies the need to look for alternative measurement techniques to have a valid estimate regardless of population characteristics.

Method

The study involved 422 infants of age less than six months, living in Gurage zone, Southern Ethiopia. The study was conducted from January to February 2016. Child feeding practices were measured for seven consecutive days using 24 h recall method. Recall since birth, was used to measure breastfeeding practices from birth to the day of data collection. Data on EBF obtained by using single 24 h recall were compared with seven days repeated 24 h recall method. McNemar’s test was done to assess if a significant difference existed in rates of EBF between measurement methods.

Result

The mean age of infants in months was 3 (SD ?1.43). Exclusive breastfeeding prevalence was highest (76.7%; 95% CI 72.6, 80.8) when EBF was estimated using single 24 h recall. The prevalence of EBF based on seven repeated 24 h recall was 53.2% (95% CI: 48.3, 58.0). The estimated prevalence of EBF since birth based on retrospective data (recall since birth) was 50.2% (95% CI 45.4, 55.1). Compared to the EBF estimates obtained from seven repeated 24 h recall, single 24 h recall overestimated EBF magnitude by 23 percentage points (95% CI 19.2, 27.8). As the number of days of 24 h recall increased, a significant decrease in overestimation of EBF was observed.

Conclusion

A significant overestimation was observed when single 24 h recall was used to estimate prevalence of EBF compared to seven days of 24 h recall. By increasing the observation days we can significantly decrease the degree of overestimation. Recall since birth presented estimates of EBF that is close to seven repeated 24 h recall. This suggests that a week recall could be an alternative indicator to single 24 h recall.

Dream questionnaires are widely used in dream research to measure dream recall frequency and various aspects of dream life. The present study has investigated the intercorrelation between questionnaire and diary measures. 285 participants completed a dream questionnaire and kept a dream diary over a two-week period. Results indicate that keeping a dream diary increased dream recall in low and medium dream recallers but decreased dream recall in high dream recallers. The correlation coefficients between questionnaire items measuring aspects of dream content and diary data were large, except for a more complex scale (realism/bizarreness). In the low recall group, however, considerably lower coefficients were found indicating that recall and sampling processes affect the response to global items measuring dream content. Using the example of testing gender differences, the findings of the present study clearly indicate that the measurement technique affects the results. Whereas sufficient internal consistency and retest reliability have been demonstrated for various dream questionnaires, future research should focus on the aspects of validity by comparing questionnaire data to dream content analysis of at least 20 dreams per person.  相似文献

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is characterized by intrusive recall of the traumatic memory. While numerous studies have investigated the neural processing mechanisms engaged during trauma memory recall in PTSD, these analyses have only focused on group-level contrasts that reveal little about the predictive validity of the identified brain regions. By contrast, a multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) approach towards identifying the neural mechanisms engaged during trauma memory recall would entail testing whether a multivariate set of brain regions is reliably predictive of (i.e., discriminates) whether an individual is engaging in trauma or non-trauma memory recall. Here, we use a MVPA approach to test 1) whether trauma memory vs neutral memory recall can be predicted reliably using a multivariate set of brain regions among women with PTSD related to assaultive violence exposure (N=16), 2) the methodological parameters (e.g., spatial smoothing, number of memory recall repetitions, etc.) that optimize classification accuracy and reproducibility of the feature weight spatial maps, and 3) the correspondence between brain regions that discriminate trauma memory recall and the brain regions predicted by neurocircuitry models of PTSD. Cross-validation classification accuracy was significantly above chance for all methodological permutations tested; mean accuracy across participants was 76% for the methodological parameters selected as optimal for both efficiency and accuracy. Classification accuracy was significantly better for a voxel-wise approach relative to voxels within restricted regions-of-interest (ROIs); classification accuracy did not differ when using PTSD-related ROIs compared to randomly generated ROIs. ROI-based analyses suggested the reliable involvement of the left hippocampus in discriminating memory recall across participants and that the contribution of the left amygdala to the decision function was dependent upon PTSD symptom severity. These results have methodological implications for real-time fMRI neurofeedback of the trauma memory in PTSD and conceptual implications for neurocircuitry models of PTSD that attempt to explain core neural processing mechanisms mediating PTSD.  相似文献

(The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 2010-05656-002.) Recently, a large meta-analysis showed that women tend to recall their dreams more often than men. Despite this robust finding, studies focused on explaining the gender difference in dream recall frequency are scarce. The present findings of an online survey indicate that sex role orientation—expressivity/femininity—was related to dream recall frequency but did not fully explain the gender difference in dream recall frequency. Future studies should investigate other variables—in addition to sex role orientation—like verbal memory, recall of emotional experiences, and/or frequency of talking about emotional matters that might play a role in explaining the gender difference in dream recall. A recent meta-analysis showed a substantial and robust gender difference in dream recall frequency of medium effect size, that is, women tend to recall their dreams more often than men. The question arises as to what factors might explain this difference. Two previous studies indicate that interest in dreams plays an important role. The present study found a significant effect of frequency of nocturnal awakenings and interest in dreams on the gender difference in dream recall frequency. In addition, neuroticism and depressive mood were associated with the gender difference on the aspects of a dream recall scale and interest in dreams. Longitudinal studies are necessary to validate the present findings, especially regarding their causality. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Seasonal aggregation and the monthly rate of neonatal transient hyperthyrotropinemia (THT) were assessed. From November 1998 to April 2005, neonates of gestational age ≥37 wks, birth weight 2500-4000?g, birth length 45-55 cm, and 1st min Apgar score >3, who had thyrotropin (TSH) ≥20 mU/L in their cord dried-blood specimen, but without congenital hypothyroidism, were enrolled in the study. The recall rate equals the rate of THT occurrence in this study. Of 47,945 neonates, 555 had THT (recall rate: 1.2%). The aggregated seasonal recall rate (recall for further assessment to rule out congenital hypothyroidism) was significantly higher in winter (January, February, and March) than the other seasons (p < .0001). Winter had higher recall rate in each year as compared to other seasons, but the overall rate of recalls decreased in 2001 and 2002. Excluding the first 6 months (due to erratic variations), the remaining 72 months revealed a relatively sinusoidal pattern in monthly recall rates; indeed, there was an initial 11-month high recall rates (1.7%), followed by a 33-month decrease (0.7%), a 19-month increase (1.9%), and a final 9-month decrease (0.8%). The recall rate of each of these time intervals was significantly different from that of the next time interval (p < .0001). The monthly recall rates were best fitted to cubic curve estimation and then autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) (0, 1, 1) models. THT occurs significantly more in winter than in other seasons, and this suggests a possible role for time-varying factor(s) contributing to its seasonal preponderance.  相似文献

Viewed from the perspective of their standpoint on the significance of intention for memory and recall, theories of memory in bourgeois psychology may be divided into two groups. One group completely disregards the role of intention in memory and recall. For example, it follows necessarily from Ebbinghaus's associationist theory that memory and recall take place independently of the intention of the subject and depend exclusively on the multiple repetition of what is contained in consciousness.  相似文献

Pattern completion, the ability to retrieve complete memories initiated by partial cues, is a critical feature of the memory process. However, little is known regarding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying this process. To study the role of dopamine in memory recall, we have analyzed dopamine transporter heterozygous knockout mice (DAT(+/-)), and found that while these mice possess normal learning, consolidation, and memory recall under full cue conditions, they exhibit specific deficits in pattern completion under partial cue condition. This form of memory recall deficit in the dopamine transporter heterozygous knockout mice can be reversed by a low dose of the dopamine antagonist haloperidol, further confirming that the inability to retrieve memory patterns is a result of dopamine imbalance. Therefore, our results reveal that a delicate control of the brain's dopamine level is critical for pattern completion during associative memory recall.  相似文献

Learning and recall in a dynamic theory of coordination patterns   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A dynamic theory of learning and recall of coordination patterns is developed in the context of relative timing skills. Characterizing the coordination patterns in such skills by the collective variable, relative phase, we choose a model system in which the intrinsic pattern dynamics as well as the influence of environmental and memorized information are well understood from previous experimental and theoretical work. To describe learning we endow memorized information with dynamics which is determined by a phenomenological strategy. Similarly, additional degrees of freedom must be introduced to understand recall. As such recall variables we choose the relative strengths with which each memorized pattern acts on the pattern dynamics and model their dynamics phenomenologically. The resulting dynamical system that resembles models used in pattern recognition theory is shown to adequately describe the learning and recall processes. Moreover, due to the operational character of the theory, several predictions emerge that are open to experimental test. In particular, we show under which conditions phase transitions occur in the dynamics of the coordination patterns during learning and during recall. Considering different time scales and their relations we demonstrate how these phase transitions can be identified and observed. Other predictions include the influence of the intrinsic pattern dynamics on the recall process and the existence of history and hysteresis effects in recall. We discuss different forms of forgetting and differentiation of memorized information. The results show how a new theoretical view of learning and recall as change of behavioral dynamics can lead to a different understanding of these processes by providing testable predictions.  相似文献
