In temperate waters of the NE Atlantic, third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex sensu stricto collected from 3 paratenic host species were identified by restriction fragment length polymorphisms. The condition of wild larval infrapopulations was assessed by examining morphometric and growth characteristics. The differentiation patterns and the excretory/secretory products of larvae grown in vitro were also examined. An extensive morphometric, growth and differentiation variability was found between parasite larvae collected from different paratenic host sources. Nematode infrapopulation larvae from the squid comprise those smaller individuals with the lowest values of survival rates and moult success. It may be then concluded that the fitness of A. simplex s. str. larvae is not the best possible in the squid, which impaired the competitiveness of the parasite and its chances of developing into an adult. This suggests that the microenvironments impaired by the paratenic host may provide larval infrapopulations with unique ecological factors probably influencing its recruitment to the final host populations.  相似文献

Among the potential effects of parasitism on host condition, the 'increased host abilities' hypothesis is a counterintuitive pattern which might be predicted in complex-life-cycle parasites. In the case of trophic transmission, a parasite increasing its intermediate host's performance facing non-host predators improves its probability of transmission to an adequate, definitive host. In the present study, we investigated the cost of infection with the acanthocephalan Polymorphus minutus on the locomotor/escape performance of its intermediate host, the crustacean Gammarus roeseli. This parasite alters the behaviour of its intermediate host making it more vulnerable to predation by avian definitive hosts. We assessed the swimming speeds of gammarids using a stressful treatment and their escape abilities under predation pressure. Despite the encystment of P. minutus in the abdomen of its intermediate host, infected amphipods had significantly higher swimming speeds than uninfected ones (increases of up to 35%). Furthermore, when interacting with the non-host crustacean predator Dikerogammarus villosus, the highest escape speeds and greatest distances covered by invertebrates were observed for parasitized animals. The altered behaviour observed among the manipulated invertebrates supported the 'increased host abilities' hypothesis, which has until now remained untested experimentally. The tactic of increasing the ability of infected intermediate hosts to evade potential predation attempts by non-host species is discussed.  相似文献

Acanthocephalans of the genus Bolbosoma are intestinal parasites of marine mammals with a lifecycle similar to that of anisakid nematodes. Several cases of Bolbosoma infection in humans have been reported, but no species identification has been made. Here, we report a case of Bolbosoma infection, in which the worm was found in histological sections of the partially resected small intestine of a Japanese man. Morphological features of the worm reconstructed from serial sectioning indicated that the worm was most likely to be a sexually immature female of Bolbosoma capitatum. DNA extraction from paraffin-embedded sections and ITS1-5.8S rRNA-ITS2 sequencing showed that this species formed a monophyletic group with Bolbosoma nipponicum, and was clearly distinguishable from Corynosoma spp. or Polymorphus spp. These results may provide a reference for identifying and characterizing unknown acanthocephalans found in histological sections.  相似文献

Parasite survival in hosts mainly depends on the capacity to circumvent the host immune response. Acanthocephalan infections in gammarids are linked with decreased activity of the prophenoloxidase (ProPO) system, suggesting an active immunosuppression process. Nevertheless, experimental evidence for this hypothesis is lacking: whether these parasites affect several immune pathways is unknown and the consequences of such immune change have not been investigated. In particular, the consequences for other pathogens are not known; neither are the links with other parasite-induced manipulations of the host. Firstly, using experimental infections of Pomphorhynchus laevis we confirmed that the lower immune activity in parasitised Gammarus pulex is induced by the parasite infection. Second, using natural infections of three different parasites, P. laevis, Pomphorhynchus tereticollis and Polymorphus minutus, we showed that acanthocephalan infection was associated with reduction of the activity of the ProPO system and the haemocyte concentration (two major parameters of crustacean immunity) suggesting that immune depression is a phenomenon affecting several immunological activities. This was confirmed by the fact that acanthocephalan infection (whatever the parasite species) was linked to a lower efficiency to eliminate a bacterial infection. The result suggests a cost of parasite immune depression. Finally, acanthocephalans are also known to induce behavioural alterations in the intermediate host which favour their transmission to definitive hosts. We did not find any correlation between behavioural and immunological alterations in both experimentally and naturally-infected gammarids. Overall, this study suggests that whilst immune depression might be beneficial to acanthocephalan survival within the intermediate gammarid host, it might also be costly if it increases host mortality to additional infections before transmission of the parasite.  相似文献

Besides conspicuous changes in behaviour, manipulative parasites may also induce subtle physiological effects in the host that may also be favourable to the parasite. In particular, parasites may be able to influence the re-allocation of resources in their own favour. We studied the association between the presence of the acanthocephalan parasite, Pomphorhynchus laevis, and inter-individual variation in the lipid and glycogen content of its crustacean host, Gammarus pulex (Amphipoda). Infected gravid females had significantly lower lipid contents than uninfected females, but there was no difference in the lipid contents of non-gravid females and males that were infected with P. laevis. In contrast, we found that all individuals that were parasitised by P. laevis had significantly increased glycogen contents, independent of their sex and reproductive status. We discuss our results in relation to sex-related reproductive strategies of hosts, and the influence they may have on the level of conflict over energy allocation between the host and the parasite.  相似文献

Few endoparasite species are pigmented. Acanthocephalans are an exception however, with several species being characterised by yellow to orange colouration both at the immature (cystacanth) and adult stages. However, the functional and adaptive significance of carotenoid-based colourations in acanthocephalans remains unclear. One possibility is that the carotenoid content of acanthocephalan cystacanths acts as a protective device against ultra-violet radiation (UVR) passing through the translucent cuticle of their crustacean hosts. Indeed, acanthocephalans often bring about behavioural changes in their aquatic intermediate hosts that can increase their exposure to light. Carotenoid composition and damage due to ultra-violet - B (UVB) radiation were investigated in three acanthocephalan parasite species that induce contrasting behavioural alterations in their common intermediate host, the crustacean amphipod Gammarus pulex. The fish acanthocephalans Pomphorhynchus laevis and Pomphorhynchus tereticollis both induce a positive phototaxis in gammarids, such that infected hosts spend more time out of shelters, while remaining benthic. The bird acanthocephalan Polymorphus minutus, on the other hand, induces a negative geotaxis, such that infected hosts typically swim close to the water surface, becoming more exposed to UV radiation. We show that differences in cystacanth colouration between acanthocephalan species directly reflect important differences in carotenoid content. The two fish parasites exhibit a contrasting pattern, with P. tereticollis harbouring a large diversity of carotenoid pigments, whereas P. laevis is characterised by a lower carotenoid content consisting mainly of lutein and astaxanthin. The highest carotenoid content is found in the bright orange P.minutus, with a predominance of esterified forms of astaxanthin. Exposure to UVB radiation revealed a higher susceptibility in P. laevis larvae compared with P. tereticollis and P. minutus, in terms of sublethality (decreased evagination rate) and of damage to DNA (increased cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers production). Although we found important and correlated interspecific differences in carotenoid composition and tolerance to high UVB radiation, our results do not fully support the hypothesis of adaptive carotenoid-based colourations in relation to UV protection. An alternative scenario for the evolution of carotenoid accumulation in acanthocephalan parasites is discussed.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The drift of Gammarus pulex in a population in which approximately 20% of adults are infected with the acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis was monitored at margin and mid-river sites in the River Teme, England over a 24-h period in mid-summer.
2. Drift densities showed a diurnal pattern with a large increase at night, independent of parasite burden.
3. There was no significant effect of site (margin or mid-river) on the proportion of parasitized and unparasitized G. pulex found in the drift or the benthos.
4. The drift of parasitized G. pulex was significantly greater than unparasitized animals. Gammarids harbouring only one parasite were found in significantly higher proportions in the drift than those with two or more parasites.
5. At both sites (margin and mid-river) the proportion of unparasitized adult G. pulex in the drift was significantly lower than that in the benthos. However, there was a significantly higher proportion of parasitized animals in the drift than in the benthos.  相似文献

The pig as an intermediate host for Taiwan Taenia infection   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Eggs (1000-100,000/animal) of Taiwan Taenia were inoculated per os into 14 Small-Ear-Miniature (SEM), 19 Landrace-Small-Ear-Miniature (L-SEM), and 5 Duroc-Yorkshire-Landrace (DYL) pigs. These animals were sacrificed 7-107 days after infection. Thirty-four pigs were found to be infected with Taiwan Taenia cysticerci and the infection rates of SEM, L-SEM, and DYL were 86%, 89% and 100% respectively. The cysticerci recovery rates of SEM, L-SEM and DYL pigs were 27.2%, 1.7% and 0.27% respectively. Cysticerci were recovered only from the livers and none were found in muscles, viscera or other parts of the carcasses. More cysticerci were located in the liver parenchyma (71%) than on the liver surface (29%). Taiwan Taenia cysticerci were smaller than those of classical T. saginata or T. solium. Moreover, Taiwan Taenia cysticerci had 2 rows of rudimentary hooklets on the scolex. The results of this study indicate that young pigs are good intermediate hosts for Taiwan Taenia and that the SEM pig is a satisfactory host for experimental studies with this tapeworm. These results were similar to other studies with different geographic strains of the T. saginata-like tapeworm in the Far East. These strains appear to be the same and possibly a new species.  相似文献

Manipulation by parasites is a catchy concept that has been applied to a large range of phenotypic alterations brought about by parasites in their hosts. It has, for instance, been suggested that the carotenoid-based colour of acanthocephalan cystacanths is adaptive through increasing the conspicuousness of infected intermediate hosts and, hence, their vulnerability to appropriate final hosts such as fish predators. We revisited the evidence in favour of adaptive coloration of acanthocephalan parasites in relation to increased trophic transmission using the crustacean amphipod Gammarus pulex and two species of acanthocephalans, Pomphorhynchus laevis and Polymorphus minutus. Both species show carotenoid-based colorations, but rely, respectively, on freshwater fish and aquatic bird species as final hosts. In addition, the two parasites differ in the type of behavioural alteration brought to their common intermediate host. Pomphorhynchus laevis reverses negative phototaxis in G. pulex, whereas P. minutus reverses positive geotaxis. In aquaria, trout showed selective predation for P. laevis-infected gammarids, whereas P. minutus-infected ones did not differ from uninfected controls in their vulnerability to predation. We tested for an effect of parasite coloration on increased trophic transmission by painting a yellow-orange spot on the cuticle of uninfected gammarids and by masking the yellow-orange spot of infected individuals with inconspicuous brown paint. To enhance realism, match of colour between painted mimics and true parasite was carefully checked using a spectrometer. We found no evidence for a role of parasite coloration in the increased vulnerability of gammarids to predation by trout. Painted mimics did not differ from control uninfected gammarids in their vulnerability to predation by trout. In addition, covering the place through which the parasite was visible did not reduce the vulnerability of infected gammarids to predation by trout. We discuss alternative evolutionary explanations for the origin and maintenance of carotenoid-based colorations in acanthocephalan parasites.  相似文献

Aqueous lead exposure of chub (Leuciscus cephalus) experimentally infected with the parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis resulted in a rapid accumulation of this metal in the intestinal acanthocephalans, reaching concentrations which were significantly greater than in the host muscle, liver, and intestine and approximately 1000 times higher than the exposure con centration. The use of parasites as biological tags in population studies of marine fish in the south-western Atlantic has proved to be a successful tool for discriminating stocks for all species to which it has been applied, namely: Scomber japonicus, Engraulis anchoita, Merluccius hubbsi and Cynoscion guatucupa, the latter studied on a broader geographic scale, including samples from Uruguayan and Brazilian waters. The distribution patterns of marine parasites are determined mainly by temperature-salinity profiles and by their association with specific masses of water. Analyses of distribution patterns of some parasite species in relation to gradients in environmental (oceanographic) conditions showed that latitudinal gradients in parasite distribution are common in the study area, and are probably directly related to water temperature. Indeed, temperature, which is a good predictor of latitudinal gradients of richness and diversity of species, shows a latitudinal pattern in south-western Atlantic coasts, decreasing southwards, due to the influence of subtropical and subantarctic marine currents flowing along the edge of the continental slope. This pattern also determines the distribution of zooplankton, with a characteristic specific composition in different water masses. The gradient in the distribution of parasites determines differential compositions of their communities at different latitudes, which makes possible the identification of different stocks of their fish hosts. Other features of the host-parasite systems contributing to the success of the parasitological method are: (1) parasites identified as good biological tags (i.e. anisakids) are widely distributed in the local fauna; (2) many of these species show low specificity and use paratenic hosts; and (3) the structure of parasite communities are, to a certain degree, predictable in time and space.  相似文献

Dogs fed raw camel meat containing two types of cysts shed unsporulated Hammondia heydorni oocysts and later sporulated Sarcocystis sporocysts in their feces, but were resistant to reinfection with the Hammondia cysts. In the Province of Chubut (43°S–47°S), from 2001 to 2005 an on‐board observers program analyzed 18 903 fishing hauls captured at depths of 19–104 m. Sport fishing tournaments near Puerto Rawson, Chubut, were also monitored from 2004 to 2006. The aim was to document the southward expansion of five cartilaginous fish species and ten bony fish species caught in Central Patagonian waters (Argentina): Psammobatis extenta, Psammobatis bergi, Atlantoraja castelnaui, Sympterygia acuta, Torpedo puelcha, Selene setapinnis, Oncopterus darwini, Dules auriga, Mullus argentinae, Cynoscion guatucupa, Prionotus nudigula, Conger orbignyanus, Urophycis brasiliensis, Trachurus lathami, and Trichiurus lepturus. Reproductive populations of S. acuta, O. darwini and C. guatucupa were detected in the Engaño Bay area close to Puerto Rawson (43°10′S–43°19′S). The newly reported fishes pertain to warm‐temperate waters, where most of the species are native to the Argentinean Zoogeographic Province. One likely hypothesis explaining their occurrence in the area is the prevalence of higher water temperatures in recent times in the San Jorge Gulf and adjacent waters. Another likely hypothesis is the increase in sampling and catch efforts in Patagonian coastal areas and also improved capabilities in taxonomic recognition of the species.  相似文献

The Southwest Atlantic is a dynamic region that includes the Patagonian Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (PLME) extending from Uruguay to the Strait of Magellan. It is one of the most productive and complex marine ecosystems in the world (Bakun, 1993). Oceanographic features of the PLME are governed by the transport of sub-Antarctic cold waters along the slope to temperate latitudes by the Falkland Current. This current flows northward to ??38° S where it collides with the southward-flowing Brazil Current (Fig. 1). Both streams then veer offshore and form an intensive thermohaline front. The Falkland Current provides the PLME with a distinctive regional surface and subsurface boundary to the east (Bakun, 1993). The deep sea circulation (below ??500 m) in the PLME is characterised by the presence of the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). This water represents a warm, highly saline, oxygen rich and nutrient poor layer extending from the North Atlantic southward across the equator. North of 55° S the NADW joins the Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) and its derivative??the Antarctic Intermediate Water??and turns eastward with the Circumpolar Current (Gordon, 1986; Reid, 1989).  相似文献

Climate change and marine traffic lead to changing species communities in the oceans. Due to increasing seawater temperatures, pathogenic Vibrio species could become significant even in temperate waters. We classified mesophilic Vibrio isolates from the German Bight (North Sea) using a polyphasic approach with special emphasis on Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight MS was used as a primary screen to classify isolates, 16S rRNA gene and rpoB gene sequencing to identify species. Potential V. parahaemolyticus isolates were screened for regulatory or virulence-related genes (toxR, tlh, tdh, trh). To investigate genomic diversity, we applied repetitive-sequence-based PCRs. Results were evaluated and methods compared using multivariate statistical analysis. Most isolates were classified as V. parahaemolyticus or Vibrio alginolyticus. Reliable differentiation between both species was achieved by rpoB sequencing and toxR detection. Among the fingerprinting methods, ERIC-PCR showed the highest discriminatory power, displaying three separated clusters. These clusters represent the species V. parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus and one group in between. The frequent detection of V. parahaemolyticus in the German Bight reveals the urgency for further monitoring. In this context, a polyphasic approach, such as defined in this study, is needed to differentiate populations of V. parahaemolyticus and V. alginolyticus.  相似文献
