Elaborate, sexually dimorphic traits are widely thought to evolve under sexual selection through female preference, male–male competition, or both. The orangethroat darter (Etheostoma spectabile) is a sexually dichromatic fish in which females exhibit no preferences for male size or coloration. We tested whether these traits affect individual reproductive success in E. spectabile when multiple males are allowed to freely compete for a female. The quality and quantity of male coloration were associated with greater success in maintaining access to the female and in spawning as the primary male (first male to participate). On the other hand, sneaking behavior showed little correlation with coloration. Male breeding coloration in E. spectabile may therefore demonstrate how intrasexual competition can be a predominant factor underlying the evolution of male ornaments.  相似文献

Models of indirect (genetic) benefits sexual selection predict linkage disequilibria between genes that influence male traits and female preferences, owing to either non-random mate choice or physical linkage. Such linkage disequilibria, a genetic correlation, can accelerate the evolution of male traits and female preferences to exaggerated levels. But relatively few empirical studies have measured the genetic correlation between male traits and female responses in natural populations, and the findings of those few are mixed: often, genetic correlations are not found. We tested the above prediction in an acoustic pyralid moth, Achroia grisella, in which males attract females with a rhythmic train of sound pulses, and females respond only to song that exceeds a minimum pulse rhythm. Both male song rhythm and female threshold response are repeatable and heritable characters. Because female choice in A. grisella is based largely on male song, and males do not appear to provide direct benefits at mating, genetic correlation between male song rhythm and female response is expected. We studied 2 A. grisella populations, bred them according to a full-sib/half-sib design, split the progeny among 4 different environmental conditions, and measured the male song/female response genetic correlation in each of the 8 resulting groups. While song rhythm and response threshold were generally heritable, we found no evidence of significant genetic correlation between these traits. We suggest that the complexity of the various male song characters, of female response to male song, and of correlations between male song characters and between aspects of female response have mitigated the evolution of strong genetic correlation between song and response. Thus, exaggerated levels of trait development may be tempered.  相似文献

Sex-related rostral variability was studied in the aristeid shrimp Aristeus antennatusfrom the Eastern Ionian Sea (Mediterranean). Shrimps were collected on a monthly basis from December 1996 to November 1997 using a commercial bottom trawl in a depth range of 446–728 m. Female relative growth of rostrum proved to be negative allometric both seasonally and in the pooled annual data set. Males on the other hand, showed no or negative correlation of rostrum length with size. Mature males with short rostra dominated in the male population all year around. The appearance of males with long and intermediate rostra during winter, which disappear thereafter in favour of those with short rostra, indicates that rostrum shortening takes place during the end of winter. The increase of mated females during spring supports the hypothesis already addressed by other authors on the function of the male short rostrum in this species mating behaviour. Nevertheless, the paucity, in comparison to other Mediterranean populations, of males with long or intermediate rostra could indicate that for the bulk of the male population, the process of rostrum shortening in the Eastern Ionian Sea occurs outside the geographical locality or depth range sampled.  相似文献

The sweating rates on the palms and chests of three adult male Japanese macaques were measured by the CaCl2 method at temperatures of 20–40°C. Rectal and skin temperatures on the palms and chests were also measured by means of copper-constantan thermocouples every minute. As ambient temperature was raised from 20°C to 40°C over a one-hour period, the sweating rates on the palms gradually increased and reached a certain plateau level in 30 to 40 minutes, but the sweating rates on the chests, on the other hand, were very low. A good correlation existed between the skin temperatures and the sweating rates on the palms as well as the skin temperatures and the sweating rates on the chests.  相似文献

We investigated male parasitic spawning in a protected natural population of Mediterranean damselfish. Chromis chromis nested in colonies, inside which males showed a high variability in mating success. Our field observations indicate that the egg batches obtained by the most successful fish were five times bigger than the ones obtained by the less successful fish and many males never received ovipositions. On the other hand, reproductive parasitism was a common tactic within the colony. Successful nesting males sneaked into their neighbours' nests depending on the amount of eggs in their nest, with small clutch size inducing the males to parasitic reproduction. Males failing to receive egg depositions on their nests showed a significantly higher parasitism rate than successful males. Non-territorial males occupied stations in the water column above the breeding grounds and whenever the opportunity arose, they disrupted spawning in progress, stealing copulation with females. We observed that the likelihood of males being parasitized by sneakers was not correlated with the size of their own clutch; on the contrary, it depended both on the number of neighbouring nests and on the number of neighbouring males with barren nests (i.e. unsuccessful males). No correlation was found between parasitic behaviour and male size, suggesting males may switch between spawning in their own and in their neighbour's nests depending on mating opportunity. The hypothesis that colonial nesting facilitates parasitic reproduction is here discussed.  相似文献

There have been several reports that individuals with Fragile X syndrome (FXS) and animal models of FXS have communication deficits. The present study utilized two different call classification taxonomies to examine the sex‐specificity of ultrasonic vocalization (USV) production on postnatal day (PD8) in the FVB strain of Fmr1 knockout (KO) mice. One classification protocol requires the investigator to score each call by hand, while the other protocol uses an automated algorithm. Results using the hand‐scoring protocol indicated that male Fmr1 KO mice exhibited longer calls (P = .03) than wild types on PD8. Male KOs also produced fewer complex, composite, downward, short and two‐syllable call‐types, as well as more frequency steps and chevron call‐types. Female heterozygotes exhibited no significant changes in acoustic or temporal aspects of calls, yet showed significant changes in call‐type production proportions across two different classification taxonomies (P < .001). They exhibited increased production of harmonic and frequency steps calls, as well as fewer chevron, downward and short calls. According to the second high‐throughput analysis, female heterozygotes produced significantly fewer single‐type and more multiple‐type syllables, unlike male KOs that showed no changes in these aspects of syllable production. Finally, we correlated both scoring methods and found a high level of correlation between the two methods. These results contribute further knowledge of sex differences in USV calling behavior for Fmr1 heterozygote and KO mice and provide a foundation for the use of high‐throughput analysis of neonatal USVs.  相似文献

Concentrations of estrogens in the plasma of Myxine glutinosa were measured in an attempt to determine whether different stages of reproduction are connected with certain levels of steroid concentration. After extraction with diethylether and column chromatography on Sephadex LH-20, the plasma was radioimmunoassayed for estrogens. Samples were subdivided into 9 groups according to the gonadal conditions of the animals. There appears to be a positive correlation in females between plasma estrogen concentration and egg size (taken as an indication of reproductive stage). After ovulation the level of plasma estrogens fell appreciably. Estrogen levels of most of the samples from male animals were also determined.  相似文献

Adaptive Offspring Sex Ratio Depends on Male Tail Length in the Guppy   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
A biased sex ratio in a brood is considered to be an adaptive strategy under certain circumstances. For example, if the expected reproductive success of one sex is greater than that of the other, parents should produce more offspring of the former sex than the latter. A previous study has documented that in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, the female offspring of males possessing proportionally longer tails exhibit smaller body sizes and show decreased reproductive outputs than those of males having shorter tails. On the other hand, the total lengths of the male offspring of the long‐tailed males are larger because of their longer tails; consequently, they exhibit greater sexual attractiveness to females. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that this asymmetry in the expected reproductive success between the male and female offspring of long‐tailed males may result in a biased sex ratio that is dependent on the tail lengths of their fathers. This hypothesis was tested in the present study. The results showed that the females that mated with long‐tailed males produced more male offspring than those that mated with short‐tailed males. Logistic regression analysis showed that the ratio of tail length to the standard length of the fathers is a determinant factor of the sex of their offspring. These results suggest that the manipulation of the offspring sex ratios by parents enhances the overall fitness of the offspring.  相似文献

The mechanisms underlying normal spermatogenesis and its pathology expressed as male sterility determined by t-complex located on chromosome 17 in mice are considered in this review. t-Complex is a very convenient model with diverse markers of expression of the genes involved in development of the functional features of the spermatozoa bearing t-complex. These features include defects of mobility, capacitation, and acrosome reactions, which determine full or partial male sterility. It has been proposed that the defects of capacitation are also inherent in humans and affect male fertility. This homology is confirmed by the presence of the male gene Tcp11 in humans and demonstration of the fact that the protein TCP11 plays a leading role in modulation of the capacitation of murine spermatozoa. Hence it follows that the defects of human genes leading to incomplete binding of the fertilization promoting peptide could play a certain role in a decreased male fertility. All this is essential not only for deeper understanding of the biology of spermatozoa, but also for development of new therapeutic methods of finding and treating the pathology of spermatozoa.  相似文献

Data from 25 male and 44 female free-ranging dusky leaf monkeys, Presbytis obscura,are analyzed. In a male the mean total testicular weight, 5.82 g, represents 0.078% of the mean adult body weight, 7.39 kg. The mean total ovarian weight, 0.52 g, represents 0.008% of the mean female adult body weight, 6.47 kg. A moderate degree of sexual dimorphism thus exists in this species, female body weight representing 88% that of the male. No seasonal variation in the adult body weight or total gonadal weight of either sex occurs. Only in males is there a strong positive correlation between left and right gonadal weight, and no correlation exists between the total gonadal weight and the estimated age of either male or female adults. Among adults, only females evince a significant positive correlation between total gonadal weight and body weight. No marked change in total ovarian weight occurs during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or lactation.  相似文献

The relationship between the quality/quantity of male investment and the feeding behavior of females was investigated in a bruchid weevil, Bruchidius dorsalis (Fahraeus), whose males donate nutrition via seminal fluid to females. Experiments on the effect of feeding regimes of both sexes on the mating frequency of females showed that females mated at a higher frequency if given low-quality food or poor male investment. On the other hand, the experiment that examined the effect of male investment quality on female feeding behavior showed that females receiving the high-quality investment exhibited feeding behavior less often. These results suggest that male investment and feeding behavior play the same role for B. dorsalis females. These experiments also showed that there are sex-related asymmetries in mating and feeding behaviors: females mated more often but males fed more often. Moreover, a field census suggested that only males visited non-host flowers to feed on the pollen and nectar during the non-flowering period of the host plants; females always stayed on the host plants irrespective of the flowering phenology. These results suggest that in B. dorsalis courtship role reversal and sex-specific feeding modes are fairly fixed and obligatory, and that male investment, derived from sexual selection, could affect the feeding behavior and spatial distribution of both sexes, which may have far-reaching impact in various ecological contexts.  相似文献

A study of the mass, volume and density of each of the wrist and hand bones of male and female human skeletons was undertaken. It was found that the mass and volume (i.e. size) of the bones are well correlated with the relative frequencies of preservation ofAustralopithecus and earlyHomo wrist and hand bones from fossil hominid sites in Africa. In general, the larger the bone, the greater its preservation frequency. In contrast to findings on bovid bones, the density of hand and wrist bones is not well correlated with the frequency of such bones recovered from these sites. These findings may be explained in terms of the agents of deposition of the bones, the physical nature of the deposit, and the methods of extraction of the fossils from the deposit.  相似文献

Parasitic infections may change the equilibrium between the costs and benefits of an animal for maintaining its status in a social group. Consequently, parasites may influence the social status of an animal in a group. The present study investigated whether acute infection with Isospora spp. has any effect on the social relationships (e.g. dominance hierarchy) of male house sparrows and how the infection influences their behaviour, immune status, and body condition. Furthermore, the study allowed us to examine how important the ‘badge of dominance’ is with respect to maintaining social status even when the actual condition is changing as a result of infection. The results obtained showed that an acute infection leads to changes in the dominance hierarchy of a social group and that body mass losses of birds depend on the achieved hierarchy status. A positive correlation between the badge size and male aggressiveness was only found during acute infection. In addition, we also found a relationship between cell‐mediated immune response and male aggressiveness during acute infection. This suggests that male badge size is not sufficient to maintain a given dominance position. On the other hand, badge size, a signal developed during the moult, appears to remain an informative and ‘honest’ signal several months later, reflecting the energy reserves of a bird faced with a demanding stressful situation such as acute infection. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 718–726.  相似文献

Follicle production from bagged hand-pollinations of the largely self-incompatible common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) greatly exceeded that of open-pollinated flowers by seven- to 30-fold in certain clones, even though these clones received one to three natural pollinations per flower. To test the basis for this difference I performed an extensive set of cross- and self-pollinations on the clone exhibiting the lowest natural follicle production, with additional experiments on other clones for comparison. Bagged, hand cross-pollinations in the least productive clone produced seven to 20 times more follicles than unbagged, hand cross-pollinations in that clone exposed to pollinating insects. Bagged flowers of this clone supplied with simultaneous hand, cross- and hand, self-pollinations produced no follicles. One other clone that normally produced few follicles responded to bagged and unbagged, hand cross-pollinations in a similar way, but follicle production of two heavier producing clones did not differ in response to this manipulation. These results suggest that self-pollinations strongly reduce the success of cross-pollinations in clones that normally experience low follicle production. Resource limitation cannot account for the low follicle production, because the stems readily supported additional follicles following supplemental hand pollinations.  相似文献

The sexuality of homosporous fern gametophytes is usually determined by antheridiogen, a pheromone that promotes maleness. In this work the effect of photomorphogenically active light on antheridiogen-induced male development was examined for gametophytes of Ceratopteris richardii. Although blue light did not affect sensitivity to Ceratopteris antheridiogen (ACe) in wild-type gametophytes, it was found that the gametophytes of the her1 mutant, which are insensitive to ACe, developed into males when grown under blue light in the presence of ACe. Thus, we conclude that another ACe-signal transduction pathway activated by blue light exists latently in the gametophytes of C. richardii. Red light, on the other hand, suppressed male development. Because simultaneous red and blue light-irradiation did not promote male development in the her1 gametophytes, the action of red light seems to dominate that of blue light. The results of experiments with a photomorphogenic mutant also suggested that phytochrome may be involved in the action of red light.  相似文献

PRL plasma levels and FSH and LH pituitary reserve were tested in ten apparently healthy male subjects. A good correlation was found between PRL on one hand and FSH plasma levels (p less than 0,05), LH plasma levels (p less than 0,01) and FSH pituitary reserve (p less than 0,01) on the other hand. This seems to support the current hypothesis that prolactin may cause a progressive clinically latent impairment in the spermatogenetic function of the testis. Further evidence is needed.  相似文献

Summary This paper reviews published literature on snakes to test the hypothesis that large male size, relative to female size, evolves because of the advantage it confers in male combat. Analysis of the data reveals a high correlation between the occurrence of male combat, and sexual dimorphism in which the male is the larger sex. This correlation holds (i) within the total sample of snake species (n=224), (ii) within the family Colubridae (n=134), and (iii) in a comparison between the eight families of snakes for which data are available. These results strongly support the hypothesis that large male size is an adaptation to intrasexual competition. The analysis also shows that females are larger than males in about 66% of snake species, that male combat is known in only about 15% of species, and that both sexual size dimorphism and the incidence of male combat tend to be distributed along taxonomic lines.  相似文献

Mate preferences are abundant throughout the animal kingdom with female preferences receiving the most empirical and theoretical attention. Although recent work has acknowledged the existence of male mate preferences, whether they have evolved and are maintained as a direct result of selection on males or indirectly as a genetically correlated response to selection for female choice remains an open question. Using the native Australian species Drosophila serrata in which mutual mate choice occurs for a suite of contact pheromones (cuticular hydrocarbons or CHCs), we empirically test key predictions of the correlated response hypothesis. First, within the context of a quantitative genetic breeding design, we estimated the degree to which the trait values favoured by male and female choice are similar both phenotypically and genetically. The direction of sexual selection on male and female CHCs differed statistically, and the trait combinations that maximized male and female mating success were not genetically correlated, suggesting that male and female preferences target genetically different signals. Second, despite detecting significant genetic variance in female preferences, we found no evidence for genetic variance in male preferences and, as a consequence, no detectable correlation between male and female mating preferences. Combined, these findings are inconsistent with the idea that male mate choice in D. serrata is simply a correlated response to female choice. Our results suggest that male and female preferences are genetically distinct traits in this species and may therefore have arisen via different evolutionary processes.  相似文献

Male hummingbirds have repeatedly evolved sexually dimorphic tails that they use as ornaments during courtship. We examine how male ornament evolution is reflected in female morphology. Lande's two-step model of the evolution of dimorphism predicts that γ (the genetic correlation between the sexes) causes trait elaboration to first evolve quickly in both sexes, then dimorphism evolves more slowly. On the hummingbird phylogeny, tail length does not fit this two-step model; although hummingbirds repeatedly evolved ornamental, elongated tails, dimorphism evolves on the same phylogenetic branch as elongation, implying that γ quickly evolves to be low over phylogenetic timescales. Male “bee” hummingbirds have evolved diverse rectrix shapes that they use to produce sound. Female morphologies exhibit subtle, pervasive correlations with male morphology. No female-adaptive hypotheses explain these correlations, since females do not also make sounds with their tail. Subtle shape similarity has arisen through the genetic correlation with males, and is subject to intralocus sexual conflict. Intralocus sexual conflict may produce increased phenotypic variation of female ornaments. Other evolutionary constraints on tail morphology include a developmental correlation between neighboring tail-feathers, biasing tail elaboration to occur most often at the ends of the feather tract (rectrix 5 or 1) and not the middle.  相似文献
