In 1980 the relationships between mildew severity, green leaf area (GLA) and grain yield of spring barley were examined using greenhouse-grown plants and plants grown in micro-plots in the field. Mildew, by causing premature senescence, reduced GLA and grain yield was strongly correlated with GLA integrated from growth stages 2–10.5 on the Feekes scale. Early mildew attack reduced all yield components (including grain size) even when fungicidal control had eliminated mildew by anthesis. Analyses of culms at anthesis and harvest supported the view that the smaller grain size associated with early mildew attack resulted from a deficiency in carbohydrate stored in culms before anthesis and available for retranslocation to the developing grain. Amounts of total soluble carbohydrate at anthesis and the amounts lost beween anthesis and harvest were both strongly correlated with GLA up to anthesis.  相似文献

Effects of mildew on the growth and yield of spring barley: 1969-72   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Mildew decreased grain yield by decreasing ear number and grain size (but not grain number/ear), the damage depending on the earliness and severity of mildew. In 1971 when mildew was early and severe, ethirimol seed dressings at 0.22 kg a.i./ha, which gave only early protection, increased yield more than did ethirimol sprays applied to protect the flag leaf and ear. In 1972 sprays were better than seed dressings at this rate because mildew was less severe during the seedling stages.  相似文献

Annual patterns of mildew on winter and spring barley, wheat and oats at NIAB trial sites for 1958-68 are reported. High intensities of mildew were preceded by early infections, particularly at sites where both winter and spring crops were infected early. Relative earliness and severity of infections in all six crops of cereals were generally similar at any site. This pattern was repeated within denned mildew ‘regions’, i.e. north, east and west. Sprowston (Norfolk) was atypical of the eastern sites, showing patterns of mildew infection more characteristic of sites in the west, where mildew values were 50 % higher than elsewhere. Dates of first visible infection became later further eastwards and northwards, particularly in winter cereals. This suggested the possibility of dispersal of inoculum by prevailing winds to the north, north-east and east, or a similar progression in climatic factors favourable to mildew development. Estimates of loss of potential yield in the trial plots of sites in each region and over the whole country were calculated for winter wheat, spring barley and spring oats using the formulae of Large and Doling, for which supplementary confirmation was provided.  相似文献

The effects of four fungicide treatments for the control of mildew on spring barley were assessed in three field experiments, one in each of the years 1981, 1982, 1983. The fungicide treatments (+/ - triadimenol seed treatment and +/ - triadimefon foliar spray applied during early booting) were chosen to control mildew, and hence affect yield determining processes, at different times in the life of the crop. Two of the experiments also tested different nitrogen amounts and the third tested four varieties differing in their degree of mildew resistance. Mildew appeared too late to affect the production and survival of spikelets and shoots, but reduced average grain weight by reducing the rate of grain growth. Grains in the upper part of the ear had a considerably lower growth rate and final weight than grains in central and basal positions but there was no evidence that the effects of mildew on grain size depended upon grain position within the ear. Mildew incidence increased with increasing nitrogen and varietal susceptibility but there were few significant interactions between these factors and fungicide treatment for grain yield. The degree of mildew control achieved by the seed treatment varied with barley variety. Use of the two successive fungicide treatments did not yield more barley than use of either alone. Amongst varieties, grain positions within the ear and fungicide treatments there was a close correlation between rate of grain growth and final grain weight. Duration of grain growth was not related to rate of grain growth or final grain weight but was inversely correlated with mean temperature during the period of rapid grain growth. The temperature sums during the period of rapid grain growth were similar for the three years and it is suggested that a more precise knowledge of the relationships between mildew incidence, varietal susceptibility and rate of grain growth may enable more accurate predictions to be made about likely yield responses to fungicide treatments.  相似文献

In a barley/livestock farming system of northern Syria, high biomass production in addition to high grain yield is desirable. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of environment and phenology on growth and yield of barley in northern Syria. Leaf area duration (LAD), specific leaf area (SLA), crop growth rate (CGR) on a thermal time basis, and biological and grain yields were compared for entries representing three contrasting development patterns: early heading spring types (pattern A), medium early heading winter types (pattern B), and late heading spring types (pattern C). The experiment was conducted in 1988/89 at two sites: Tel Hadya (TH, 250 mm precipitation) and Breda (BR, 180 mm). Cold damage occurred in winter and, especially at BR, drought stress developed in spring. At the two sites, development was similar, but yields at TH were twice those at BR. This was related to a longer LAD and a faster CGR in spring. Development pattern affected growth. A long vegetative phase (pattern B) resulted in small leaves with a low SLA in winter, probably due to a slow leaf extension rate. Since cold tolerance and profuse tillering compensated for the small leaf size, pattern B had on average a longer LAD than pattern A. Pattern C had a longer LAD than pattern A because of a longer crop duration. This long duration had a negative effect on yield, so LAD was poorly related to yield. Development in spring was associated with CGR. Pattern C had a slow CGR and low yields; pattern B had the fastest CGR, but the yield advantage over pattern A was not significant. These results suggest that early heading winter barley, which combines long LAD with fast spring CGR, may give the best performance in a barley/livestock farming system in northern Syria.  相似文献

The tolerance of spring and winter varieties of wheat, oats and barley to infection by barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) was examined in glasshouse tests. Severely affected plants were stunted and grain yields were considerably decreased because of decreases in both ear number and numbers and sizes of grains. Winter barley varieties were very susceptible and many were killed by BYDV infection. The winter wheat varieties were more widely tolerant than those of oats and barley. Individual seedling symptoms, although correlated with reductions in yield, could not be relied upon for accurate classification of all varieties in order of their susceptibility to infection. Symptoms of seedling infection incorporated into an index of infection permit estimates to be made o eventual decreases in yield by applying the formula DY = 1.4 × (SH+LA+LL)+18. Thus decrease in grain yield (DY) can be related to decreases in height (SH) and leaf length (LL) and increases in leaf area discoloured (LA) in seedling plants infected with BYDV.

Effects of net blotch on growth and yield of spring barley   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of net blotch on the growth and yield of cv. Beatrice spring barley was examined in a greenhouse experiment. Separate inoculations at growth stages 21 and 34 reduced green leaf area, root weight, leaf sheath and stem weight and tiller number. The early inoculated plants, which responded and recovered more rapidly than later treated ones, suffered a loss in grain yield and this was related to the amount of disease, the loss in green leaf area and the reduction in unit leaf rate.  相似文献

Circumstantial evidence from field experiments at Rothamsted suggested that effects of powdery mildew on grain filling in spring barley may be determined partly by temperature during the grain-filling period. An experiment was, therefore, done which compared the effects of fungicides applied to control powdery mildew on grain filling in early- and late-sown spring barley plants kept either out-of-doors throughout their growth (‘cool’ environment) or under the same conditions until the start of grain filling and then transferred to a heated glasshouse (‘warm’ environment) until harvested. Fungicides that controlled mildew increased the total grain yield of the late-sown barley more than that of the early-sown and much more in the warm environment than in the cool. On average, the effect of the fungicides in the cool environment was to increase grain yield by 17·7%. Small increases in numbers of grains/ear (+ 3·4%) and thousand-grain weight (TGW) (+ 2·3%) contributed to this increase but it could be attributed principally to an average increase in numbers of ears/plant of 12·4%. Contrastingly, fungicides increased average grain yield in the warm environment by 58·2%. Effects of the fungicides on numbers of ears/plant (+ 27·8%) and on numbers of grains/ear (+ 4·5%) were not significantly different to those in the cool environment, and the much greater responses in the warm than in the cool environment could be attributed mostly to much larger effects on grain size (+ 19·2%) The greater benefits of the fungicides and, by implication, the greater damage done by powdery mildew in the warm than in the cool environment cannot, unequivocally, be attributed to differences in temperature during grain-filling because the two environments clearly differed in other ways and especially in light intensity. Nevertheless, the results obtained do illustrate the potential risks involved in using data obtained under one set of circumstances to predict what will happen in another, especially when environments differ as greatly as glasshouses and fields.  相似文献

Factorial experiments in 1976–1979 investigated the effects of sowing date, fungicides (ethirimol seed treatments and tridemorph sprays) and insecticides (phorate applied to the soil, and menazon or dimethoate sprays) on powdery mildew, aphids, barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and grain yield of spring barley (cv. Julia in 1976 and 1977; cv. Wing in 1978 and 1979). Late sowing usually increased the severity of powdery mildew, numbers of aphids and incidence of BYDV and generally decreased yield. Responses to pesticides were commonly greater on the late-sown than on the early-sown barley. Response to fungicides are principally attributed to the control of powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei; the target species) but responses to insecticides cannot be attributed to virus control and seem unlikely to be due solely to control of aphids, whose numbers were relatively small. There were some effects of fungicides on aphids and insecticides on mildew, but they were inconsistent and too small to affect crop protection strategies.  相似文献

Cereal crop yield is determined by different yield components such as seed weight, seed number per spike and the tiller number and spikes. Negative correlations between these traits are often attributed to resource limitation. However, recent evidence suggests that the same genes or regulatory modules can regulate both inflorescence branching and tillering. It is therefore important to explore the role of genetic correlations between different yield components in small grain cereals. In this work, we studied pleiotropic effects of row type genes on seed size, seed number per spike, thousand grain weight, and tillering in barley to better understand the genetic correlations between individual yield components. Allelic mutants of nine different row type loci (36 mutants), in the original spring barley varieties Barke, Bonus and Foma and introgressed in the spring barley cultivar Bowman, were phenotyped under greenhouse and outdoor conditions. We identified two main mutant groups characterized by their relationships between seed and tillering parameters. The first group comprises all mutants with an increased number of seeds and significant change in tiller number at early development (group 1a) or reduced tillering only at full maturity (group 1b). Mutants in the second group are characterized by a reduction in seeds per spike and tiller number, thus exhibiting positive correlations between seed and tiller number. Reduced tillering at full maturity (group 1b) is likely due to resource limitations. In contrast, altered tillering at early development (groups 1a and 2) suggests that the same genes or regulatory modules affect inflorescence and shoot branching. Understanding the genetic bases of the trade-offs between these traits is important for the genetic manipulation of individual yield components.  相似文献

Powdery mildew was artificially introduced into field plotsof barley given two amounts of nitrogen fertilizer. In Tyraand Triumph, grain dry matter and nitrogen yield of healthyplots increased in response to nitrogen fertilizer. In mildewedplots increases in response to nitrogen did not occur in Triumph, despite low levels of mildew infection. Mildew reduced grainyield and nitrogen content at both levels of nitrogen in bothvarieties. Hordewm vulgare L., barley, Erysiphe graminis, powdery mildew, nitrogen fertilizer, grain yield  相似文献

In Mediterranean regions drought is the major factor limiting spring barley and durum wheat grain yields. This study aimed to compare spring barley and durum wheat root and shoot responses to drought and quantify relationships between root traits and water uptake under terminal drought. One spring barley(Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Rum) and two durum wheat Mediterranean cultivars(Triticum turgidum L. var durum cvs Hourani and Karim) were examined in soil‐column experiments under well watered and drought conditions. Root system architecture traits, water uptake, and plant growth were measured. Barley aerial biomass and grain yields were higher than for durum wheat cultivars in well watered conditions. Drought decreased grain yield more for barley(47%) than durum wheat(30%, Hourani). Root‐to‐shoot dry matter ratio increased for durum wheat under drought but not for barley, and root weight increased for wheat in response todrought but decreased for barley. The critical root length density(RLD) and root volume density(RVD) for 90% available water capture for wheat were similar to(cv. Hourani) or lower than(cv. Karim) for barley depending on wheat cultivar. For both species, RVD accounted for a slightly higher proportion of phenotypic variation in water uptake under drought than RLD.  相似文献

Experiments in 1973 and 1974 tested the effects of ethirimol seed treatment and the timing of single sprays of ethirimol or tridemorph, on mildew control and the growth and yield of spring barley. These treatments were compared with selected combinations of two treatments designed to give longer protection. In 1973, combinations of seed treatment and spray, or two sprays, did not yield better than the best component treatment applied alone or the most effective single spray of tridemorph applied on 1 June. In 1974, mildew developed usually early and yields were increased by applying ethirimol to the seed plus a tridemorph spray or two tridemorph sprays. However, barley sprayed once with tridemorph on 20 May, the expected best date, yielded more than barley receiving a seed treatment of ethirimol plus a tridemorph spray applied on either 3 or 12 June. Sprays of captafol and tridemorph, applied as separate treatments, successively to the same plots on three occasions, gave the best yields in both years. Treatments most affected ear number but they did have some effect on all components of yield. In 1974 there was a significant relationship between ear number and the variance of the number of grains per ear.  相似文献

A survey of foliar diseases of spring barley in England and Wales in 1967   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A total of 5,250 acres of spring barley was sampled in proportion to the barley acreage in each of eight regions. The percentage leaf area ‘affected’ by each disease was recorded for the first (flag) and second leaves at a growth stage when the grain was milky ripe. The operation was automated by punching the data directly on to computer paper tape and a programme was written to analyse the results. Mildew was found to be the most important disease, causing an average loss in yield of approximately 18 %, followed in descending order by brown rust 3%, leaf blotch 1 %, yellow rust 1 %, halo spot 1 %. The total loss due to foliar diseases was estimated to be 20–25% of the national barley yield. Diseases were more severe in the southern than northern regions, e.g. mildew severity was three times higher because of the greater popularity of mildew-susceptible varieties, and the prevalence of weather more conducive to mildew development. Disease severity was not related to previous cropping, and in general the February-sown crops had more mildew than the April-sown crops.  相似文献

Field experiments showed that the treatment of winter barley with microbial metabolites produced by a Bacillus subtilis strain led to increased yields in spite of a remaining mildew infection. Disease severity/yield relations obtained on a single tiller basis for either mildew infection at EC 75 or area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) were negatively correlated for untreated plants (R2= 89%, 94%) while this relation did not exist for inducer-treated ones (R2= 10%, 13%). Despite an increasing infection density. yields of main tillers of inducertreated plants were not decreased. On the other hand area under green leaf area curve (AUGLAC) showed a higher correlation with grain yield (R2= 89%) of inducer-treated plants. Possible explanations for the mitigated damaging effect of powdery mildew were expected in carbohydrate metabolism. especially carbohydrate formation and translocation. Assimilation rates of flag leaves of inducer-treated barley with similar infection densities to those of untreated plants were increased over a prolonged period and even exceeded those of non infected ones. In inducer-treated plants the export of 14CO2 from flag leaves into ears remained unimpaired by mildew infection and the allocation of assimilates to grains was highest at late stages of grain filling. Obviously plants were stimulated by inducer treatments to compensate for the damaging effect of powdery mildew and to tolerate mildew infection without yield loss.  相似文献

The tolerance of spring and winter cultivars of wheat, barley and oats to infection by barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) was examined in field tests. Sererely affected plants were stunted and grain yields were considerably reduced. These changes in infected spring barley cultivars were associated with decreases in both ear length and number and sizes of grain. Most barley and oat cultivars were more susceptible than wheat cultivars. Yield losses decreased with successively later dates of inocultaiton, the yield response being characteristic of the tolerance of individual cultivars. Differences between tolerant and susceptible cultivars were insignificant in most cases where infection occurred after growth stage 7. Individual seedling symptoms assessed in April and May were more closely related to each other and to yield losses than those recorded in March and June. The incorporation of seedling symptoms into indices of infection permits estimates of decrease in yield to be made by applying the formulae, DY = (LC+LA+SH)/3 to barley cultivars and DY = 1.7 × (LC+LA+SH)/3 - 7 to oat cultivars. Thus decreases in grain yield (DY) can be related to decreases in seedling height (SH) and increases in percentage of leaf area discoloured (LA) and intensity of discoloration (LC). Plot symptoms of infection, scored on a 0–7 scale, offered a more convenient method of assessment than individual seedling symptoms. Plot scores (PA) were closely correlated with other seedling symptoms and with decreases in grain yield (DY), and can thus be used to estimate yield losses by substituting into the formula, DY = 14PA (April)-8. This formula was found to be applicable to all cereal cultivars examined in N.I.A.B. trials, there being no distinction between wheat, barley and oats.  相似文献

The effects of competition from volunteer barley (Hordeum vulgare) on the growth and yield of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) were investigated in four experiments over three seasons. The growth of rape in the autumn was reduced by 50 - 91 % by competition from 400 barley plants m-2. A lower barley density of 200 plants m-2 had less effect but still reduced growth of rape by 65 - 81% in two of the experiments and 25 - 40% in the other two. During winter and spring the barley decreased in vigour and in the spring the rape started to recover, especially on the early drilled (23 - 30 August) plots. The rape sown in mid-September recovered less quickly. In Experiment 3, herbicides applied in November to control barley did not result in increased growth of rape in winter but led to greater recovery in spring. The barley died during the winter in Experiments 2 and 4, even in the absence of herbicides. Despite the marked effects of barley on the growth of rape in the autumn, yields on plots that had previously contained 200 barley plants m-2 were reduced by a maximum of only 16% in three of the experiments. In Experiment 3, where the barley was most competitive, this density and 400 plants m-2 lowered yields by 39% and 78%, respectively. Where a herbicide was used in November to control the barley these yield losses were reduced to 5%. In many rape crops the cost of herbicide treatment would be greater than the financial returns from the expected increase in yield resulting from the control of weeds. Possible reasons for the small loss in yield of rape from barley densities that had substantial effects on the growth of rape in the autumn are discussed.  相似文献

In experiments with spring and winter wheat at Rothamsted and Woburn during 4 years CCC increased yield at close spacing (4 in) (10 cm) more than at usual spacing (8 in) (20 cm), but there was no interaction between spacing and yield. Some experiments tested up to 2·4 cwt/acre (300 kg/ha) N to see whether yields continued to increase with more than usual amounts of N, when CCC prevented lodging. There was no evidence of this. When a short dry spell occurred at ear emergence, yield of spring wheat was increased by 6 cwt/acre (750 kg/ha) by CCC and 10 cwt (1250 kg) by irrigation. CCC probably improves yield in these conditions because the larger root system it causes enables more ear-bearing shoots to survive. CCC increases yield in two ways, either by increasing ears or grain per ear. In an unlodged crop CCC usually makes the grains smaller, but by preventing lodging it can also increase size. Usually CCC decreases the leaf area per shoot. The flag leaf may be smaller, unchanged or larger than those of untreated plants. There was no obvious connexion between flag-leaf area and grain yield; when CCC decreased flag-leaf area duration by 25 %, grain yield was unchanged. The results suggest that using CCC gives a more than even chance of a profitable yield increase.  相似文献
