With only six recognised genera, the family Clinostomidae Lühe, 1901 remains a global research interest of parasitologists and ecologists. Recent efforts have focused on providing molecular data to investigate species diversity, elucidate life-cycles, and make inferences on the group’s evolutionary history. Of the clinostomid genera, the monotypic Ithyoclinostomum Witenberg, 1926 has remained more enigmatic compared to the commonly encountered Clinostomum Leidy, 1856. Recent morphological and molecular evidence from metacercariae suggests a second Ithyoclinostomum species may exist in freshwater cichlids in Central America and Mexico. In a recent survey of great blue herons Ardea herodias L. from commercial catfish production farms in Mississippi, USA, two specimens of an abnormally large (> 20 mm) clinostomid were encountered in the oesophagus of a single bird. These specimens were identified as an Ithyoclinostomum sp. morphologically distinct from the only nominal species Ithyoclinostomum dimorphum (Diesing, 1850). Using morphological and molecular data these adult specimens were confirmed as conspecific with the larval metacercariae previously described from Central America and Mexico and represent the novel species, Ithyoclinostomum yamagutii n. sp.

Pygidiopsis macrostomum Travassos, 1928, a poorly known species originally described from a single specimen from Rattus norvegicus (Erxleben, 1777) in Brazil, is redescribed on the basis of metacercariae from the mesenteries of naturally infected guppies Poecilia vivipara Bloch and Schneider, 1801 (Poeciliidae), and adults obtained from an experimental infection of hamsters. Pygidiopsis macrostomum is characterized by the absence of oral spines, vitellaria extending forward to ventral sucker, uterus reaching pharyngeal level, X-shaped excretory vesicle, and an oral sucker/acetabulum ratio of 1:0.8. The surface ultrastructure shows that the tegument of the metacercaria does not strongly differ from that of adults. The brush-shaped spines of P. macrostomum are similar to those reported for Pygidiopsis summa and Pygidiopsis ardeae, but no differences in spine shape were observed throughout the body.  相似文献

A scanning electron microscopic study was performed on the surface ultrastructure of Pygidiopsis summa (Digenea: Heterophyidae) adults. Metacercariae were collected from gills and muscles of mullets (Mugil cephalus) caught in a known endemic area, and adult flukes were harvested from dogs after 8 weeks of experimental infection. The worm was calabash form with its posterior part broader than the anterior part. Tegumental spines were densely distributed over the body surface, except on the suckers and genital apparatus, and around the excretory pore. Well differentiated spines were observed on the anterior half of the body, with 14-16 tips ventrally, and 19-20 tips dorsally. On the oral sucker, three pairs of type I sensory papillae (uni-ciliated knob-like swellings) and one pair of type II sensory papillae (aciliated round-swellings) were observed on the anterior and posterior parts of the lip, respectively. On the lip of the ventral sucker, one pair of type II sensory papillae was distributed only on its posterior part. Sperms were seen emerging from or entering into the genital apparatus. The results showed that the surface ultrastructure of P. summa was unique among the heterophyid trematodes, especially in digitation of tegumental spines and in distribution of sensory papillae on oral and ventral suckers.  相似文献

Trophozoites of Giardia ardeae were obtained from the great blue heron (Ardea herodias) and established in axenic culture using the TYI-S-33 medium. The generation time in culture for G. ardeae was 22-25 hr, which was 3-fold longer than for Giardia duodenalis (WB strain). A morphological comparison of trophozoites in the original intestinal isolate to those grown in culture revealed that they were identical for the following characteristics: a pyriform-shaped body, a ventral adhesive disc with a deep notch in the posterior border, teardrop-shaped nuclei, pleomorphism in median body structure ranging from a round-oval appearance (Giardia muris type) to that of a clawhammer (G. duodenalis type), and a single caudal flagellum on the right side (as viewed dorsally) with the left one being rudimentary. Analysis of the chromosomal migration patterns was performed by orthogonal-field-alternation gel electrophoresis and demonstrated that the pattern for G. ardeae was distinctly different from that for G. duodenalis (Portland 1-CCW strain). Bacterial symbionts were seen attached to trophozoites in the original isolate but could not be detected in cultured trophozoites using scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence light microscopy using the Hoechst 33258 dye for DNA localization, or by standard microbiological techniques using nonselective media for growing aerobic or anaerobic bacteria. This study demonstrated that avian-derived Giardia could be grown in axenic culture; based on morphological criteria and chromosomal migration patterns, that G. ardeae should be considered a distinct species; and that rationale for determining Giardia spp., based on median body structure alone, should no longer be considered adequate for classification at the species level.  相似文献

Predicting the response of natural populations to habitat loss and the ecological consequences to communities is one of the great challenges of ecology. Here, we report long-term (30 years) results from an ecological survey illustrating a change of breeding habits in the Grey heron, Ardea cinerea. Comparative data on brood size show that Grey herons adopting a new breeding behaviour produce more nestlings than other individuals in the modified area. Interestingly, this recent behavioural change may result in indirect effects on the community structure by negatively affecting the breeding population of the Purple heron Ardea purpurea.  相似文献

The diet of the grey heron (Ardea cinerea) was investigated in three colonies in northern Poland (Mosty, Kiersity and Kty Rybackie) varying in size, habitat type and composition of feeding areas used by birds. The diet was assessed during the breeding season on the base of pellets and regurgitated food. Pellets from all studied colonies consisted mainly of mammal hair (almost 100% of samples), bone remains (20–24%) and invertebrate remains (26–51%, mainly water beetle, Dytiscus marginalis). Bones and hair of water vole (Arvicola terrestris) and Microtus voles were the most common remains of mammals recorded in pellets. Remains of other animal taxa were found sporadically. In the colonies at Mosty and Kiersity, fish composed more than 95% of collected regurgitated prey items. Food consumption of herons from the biggest colony at Kty Rybackie was estimated to exceed 100 t per season. Herons from Mosty consumed ca 46–52 t, from Kiersity 30–38 t of food per season. The impact of herons on fish communities was much lower than other losses due to predation (herons from Kty Rybackie caught only 6% of fishermen bycatch, birds from Mosty took 10–14% of round gobies eaten by cormorants).  相似文献

  • 1.1. Water vapour conductance (GH2O) was determined for 25 grey heron Ardea cinerea eggs in the laboratory, and in nests during natural incubation at two Scottish colonies.
  • 2.2. The mean GH2O of eggs measured in the nest which successfully hatched was 9.0 mgH;O/mmHg/day and the mean water vapour pressure gradient between egg and nest (ΔPH2O), measured using “calibrated” duck eggs, averaged at 31 mmHg (4.13 kPa).
  • 3.3. Based on eggshell porosity results, from the eggs which hatched, such a gradient would result in a loss of water from the eggs during incubation equivalent to 11% of their fresh weight.
  • 4.4. Shell thickness, the number of pores/cm2 of eggshell and DDE content were also determined for the 25 eggs measured in the laboratory.
  • 5.5. Eggs containing high levels of DDE had thinner shells, more pores in the eggshell and a higher overall eggshell porosity.
  • 6.6. The main problem posed by a high level of DDE would appear, however, not to be an excessive water loss from the egg during incubation, but rather eggshell thinning leading to a loss of the egg due to breakage in the nest.

Acanthotrema felis n. sp. (Digenea: Heterophyidae) is described from adult flukes recovered in the small intestine of stray cats caught in the southwestern part of the Republic of Korea. The worms were characterized by minute body size, the presence of a bipartite seminal vesicle, and a ventral sucker associated with a ventrogenital sac, which enclosed 3 sclerites (2 long and pointed, and I short and thumblike), and an unarmed gonotyl. They were assigned to Acanthotrema Travassos, 1928, which currently contains 4 species. The new species resembles A. acanthotrema, the type species, because both have 3 sclerites on the ventrogenital sac. However, all 3 sclerites in the new species are armed with minute spines on their base, whereas only 2 sclerites in A. acanthotrema have minute spines near their tips. Three species of Stictodora Looss, 1899, namely,Stictodora tridactyla Martin and Kuntz, 1955, S. cursitans Kinsella and Heard, 1974, and S. tanayensis Velasquez, 1973, are transferred to Acanthotrema, and the new species is distinguished from them particularly in terms of the number and shape of its sclerites. The generic diagnosis of Acanthotrema is emended.  相似文献

Analyses of the contents of pellets of Grey herons from different breeding colonies and breeding seasons indicated that the mammal and invertebrate species included in the heron diet varied between colonies and between years. The large differences in mammal species found in neighbouring heronries suggested the existence of important small-scale variability in the exploitation of mammals. Almost no fish and bird remains were found in the pellets. We believe that most invertebrates, even the smallest ones, were actively taken by the herons. Identification of mammal species composition by means of skulls and hair remains gave different results. The shape of a pellet seemed to be dependent upon the (moisture?) conditions during its formation.  相似文献

Moniligerum n. g. is erected for Moniligerum blairi n. sp. (Opisthotrematidae) and Nudacotyle undicola n. sp. (Nudacotylidae) is described, both from the small intestine of Trichechus manatus L. from Martin County, Florida. The new genus is placed in the family Opisthotrematidae Poche, 1926, subfamily Lankatrematinae Yamaguti, 1958. Moniligerum differs from other genera in the subfamily (Lankatrema Crusz & Fernand, 1954, and Lankatrematoides Blair, 1981) by the possession of an anterior collar and in the form of the ovary (compact and not transversely elongated) and vitellarium (single median lobed mass). Rhipidocotyle genovi n. sp. is described from the fishGaidropsarus mediterraneus (L.) (Gadiformes: Gadidae) in the Black Sea. Morphological features characteristic of this species include: an anterior sucker with seven prominent muscular appendages; a pharynx rather posterior in position; ovary and testes relatively anterior in position, usually anterior to the pharynx; a long (in relation to body length) sucker, cirrus-sac and excretory vesicle; the presence of a pre-oral lip; and contiguous vitelline fields which form an arch. The new species is distinguished fromR. galeata, R. lamberti andBucephalus marinum. This is the first member of the genus whose adults are recovered from Black Sea marine fishes. Metacercariae, which encyst in large numbers in the musculature and fins of the blenniid fishesBlennius tentacularis, B. sanguinolentus, B pavo, B. sphinx andB. zvonimiri and exhibit a similar morphology to the adult, are described.  相似文献

Two new species of Pseudohaploporinae, Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. and Parahaploporus elegantus n. g., sp. n., are described from intestines of the Vietnamese mullet fish Moolgarda seheli and Osteomugil cunnesius, respectively. Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. differs from two known Pseudohaploporus species, P. vietnamensis and P. planiliza, by the absence of a diverticulate hermaphroditic duct and muscular sphincters at the proximal end of the hermaphroditic sac. Metrically, P. pusitestis sp. n. is close to P. vietnamensis and differs from this species and from P. planilizum by lower maximum sizes of most parameters. Parahaploporus elegantus n. g., sp. differs from representatives of Pseudohaploporus by the presence of a single testis and the armament of hermaphroditic duct and is morphologically close to trematodes of the genus Haploporus. However, P. elegantus n. g differs from all known Haploporus species from mugilids of the Indo-West Pacific by the structure of the armament of the hermaphroditic duct and also by size of body, organs and eggs. The validity of designating two new species and a new genus of trematodes is supported by ITS and 28S rDNA sequence data. Phylogenetic reconstructions showed that the new trematodes belong to the Pseudohaploporinae, which formed a well-supported cluster within the monophyletic Haploporidae.  相似文献

A new pinworm parasite is described from Abrocoma cinerea, a caviomorph rodent of the superfamily Octodontoidea from the Andes of Bolivia. The new species, Helminthoxys abrocomae n. sp., possesses special secretory mamelons which we consider a synapomorphy of the genus Helminthoxys.Within Helminthoxys, the closest relatives are found in octodontoid rodents: H. gigantea occurs in Octodon degus in Chile and O. bridgesiin Argentina, and H. freitasi is a parasite of Thrichomys aperoides in Brazil. H. abrocomae n. sp. differs from both other species morphometrically in relation to different parts of the body in both sexes, particularly the size of the body, spicule, gubernaculum and eggs, by the presence of a rough cuticular area around the cephalic sensory papillae and by the possession of very well-developed cervical alae which are strongly curved dorsally. H. abrocomae n. sp. is the tenth nominal species described in Helminthoxys, all of them being parasites of caviomorph rodents.  相似文献

Strzeleckia major n. g., n. sp. and S. minor n. sp. are described from the dusky antechinus Antechinus swainsonii (Marsupialia: Dasyuridae) from the Kosciusko National Park in southern New South Wales, Australia. The two species were found together in the same individual host animals but occupy different sites in the intestine. The new genus is placed within the Hasstilesiidae, where it differs from the only other genus, Hasstilesia, by being more elongate and in having larger suckers, tandem testes, the ovary between rather than opposite the testes, and in having the caeca not reaching the posterior end of the body. It is suggested that the life-cycles of these species are similar to those of other hasstilesiids. Pupillid snails may act as sole intermediate hosts.  相似文献

Pholeohedra overstreeti n. g., n. sp. (Digenea: Haploporidae) is described from Girella zebra (Kyphosidae) in South Australia. The new genus is compared with all genera of Haploporidae sensu lato (including Atractotrematidae, Megasolenidae and Waretrematidae) and has a unique bell-shaped concavity at its posterior end. The genus otherwise resembles Hapladena in the arrangement of the testis, vitellarium and gut but also resembles Megasolena, Metamegasolena and Vitellibaculum except in having a single testis. This is the first haploporid reported from kyphosid fishes in Australia.  相似文献

During a study of digenean parasites of deep-sea fishes, 81% (17 of 21) of Monomitopus agassizzi (Ophidiidae) from the Gulf of Mexico were infected with Megenteron manteri n. sp. and 10% (2 of 21) were infected with what appears to be a new species of Steringophorus. M. manteri n. sp. differs from M. crassum in having a longer body (3,733–9,394 m), shorter caeca and a uterus that extends posteriorly beyond the ends of the caeca. The species of Steringophorus differs from other species in the genus in having smaller eggs (19–23 m long) and caeca that extend into the posterior half of the hindbody.  相似文献

Summary A new species, Macvicaria taksengi (Opecoelidae: Plagioporinae), is described from the fishes Otolithes ruber and Sillago sihama from Pinang, Malaysia. It differs from most other members of the genus in the position of the ovary relative to the testes and the anterior position of the genital pore. A brief discussion on the Indo-West Pacific forms of the genus Macvicaria and related genera includes references to several new combinations: M. [Lebouria] isaitschikowi (Layman, 1930), M. [Plagioporus] sillagonis (Yamaguti, 1938), M. [Plagioporus] chrysophrys (Nagaty & Abdel Aal, 1969) and M. [Plagioporus (Plagioporus)] longisaccus (Fischthal & Kuntz, 1964).  相似文献

The life-cycle of Helicometra gibsoni n. sp., an opecoelid trematode of marine fishes, is elucidated and the life-history stages are described. Natural infections with the cercariae, which are typically opecoelid in many respects but characterised by having very long, extensile tails, were found in the intertidal snail Anachis terpsichore collected from the Lawson's Bay Coast, Bay of Bengal. Metacercariae were found in the thoracic muscles of the shooting shrimp Alphaeus malabaricus as prominent, reddish-brown, oval cysts. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that 14 days are required for the development of cercaria into the infective metacercarial stage in shrimps. Natural infections with the adult fluke were found in Scorpaenopsis cirrhosus. Therapon jarbua served as an experimental host. Fourteen-day-old metacercariae fed to T. jarbua developed into egg-producing adults in 40–43 days. Intra-specific variations noted in the flukes obtained from natural and experimental infections are presented. H. fasciata of Madhavi (1975) is regarded as a synonym of H. gibsoni.  相似文献
