This study is the first to compare the anesthetic effects of two cyclohexamines on free-ranging subantarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) females. From April to July 1999, 107 females were immobilized for tooth extraction and blood sampling, using either ketamine (Ketalar, n = 58) alone or tiletamine-zolazepam (Zoletil 100, n = 49) mixture. Animals were injected intramuscularly at mean doses of 2.1 mg/kg for ketamine and 1.1 mg/kg for tiletamine-zolazepam mixture. Individual response to both drugs was highly variable. The dosage required to achieve a satisfactory level of anesthesia was smaller for subantarctic fur seals than for most other species of seals and was less for animals in better body condition. Few side effects were observed during the trials, aside from mild tremors caused by ketamine, and respiratory depression or prolonged apnea caused by tiletamine-zolazepam. We recommend use of ketamine, especially by those with little experience in anesthesia of fur seals. However, precautionary measures should be taken, such as using low doses for animals in good body condition and being prepared for anesthetic emergencies to avoid any casualties.  相似文献

Scats of subantarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis at Marion Island were collected from 1996 to 2,000, to examine temporal variability in the diet, factors affecting the variability and how the diet differed from that of the Antarctic fur seal A. gazella in the same period. For A. tropicalis, 19 prey species, of which 18 were fish and one a cephalopod, were identified in 213 scats. Fish were the main prey, occurring in 98.1 % of scats, whereas the cephalopod was present in only 1.4 % of scats. Amongst fish species, Myctophidae were most abundant, with Gymnoscopelus piabilis, G. fraseri and Electrona carlsbergi being the commonest prey items. Other fish families present in the diet in small numbers were Channichthyidae, Paralepididae, Nototheniidae, Microstomatidae and Notosudidae. Fish eaten ranged in size from Protomyctophum bolini and Krefftichthys anderssoni of standard length (SL) 25 mm to a single Dissostichus eleginoides of SL 249 mm. Differences in the diet existed between summer and winter. However, prey type accounted for most variability in the diet. In previous studies based on scats, a dominance of fish in the diet of A. tropicalis was also found at Possession Island (Iles Crozet), Amsterdam Island and Macquarie Island, but the dominant prey species differed between the various localities, also suggesting that prey availability is a major determinant of diet. At Marion Island, from 1996 to 2000 the diet of A. gazella comprised similar prey to that of A. tropicalis, but the proportional contribution of prey types differed in instances.  相似文献

Surviving prolonged fasting implies closely regulated alterations in fuel provisioning to meet metabolic requirements, while preserving homeostasis. Little is known, however, of the endocrine regulations governing such metabolic adaptations in naturally fasting free-ranging animals. The hormonal responses to natural prolonged fasting and how they correlate to the metabolic adaptations observed, were investigated in subantarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) pups, which, because of the intermittent pattern of maternal attendance, repeatedly endure exceptionally long fasting episodes throughout their development (1-3 mo). Phase I fasting was characterized by a dramatic decrease in plasma insulin, glucagon, leptin, and total l-thyroxine (T(4)) associated with reductions in mass-specific resting metabolic rate (RMR), plasma triglycerides, glycerol, and urea-to-creatine ratio, while nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and β-OHB increased. In contrast, the metabolic steady-state of phase II fasting reached within 6 days was associated with minimal concentrations of insulin, glucagon, and leptin; unchanged cortisol and triiodothyronine (T(3)); and moderately increased T(4). The early fall in insulin and leptin may mediate the shift to the strategy of energy conservation, protein sparing, and primary reliance on body lipids observed in response to the cessation of feeding. In contrast to the typical mammalian starvation response, nonelevated cortisol and minimal glucagon levels may contribute to body protein preservation and downregulation of catabolic pathways, in general. Furthermore, thyroid hormones may be involved in a process of energy conservation, independent of pups' nutritional state. These original hormonal settings might reflect an adaptation to the otariid repeated fasting pattern and emphasize the crucial importance of a tight physiological control over metabolism to survive extreme energetic constraints.  相似文献

The poorly known fossil record of fur seals and sea lions (Otariidae) does not reflect their current diversity and widespread abundance. This limited fossil record contrasts with the more complete fossil records of other pinnipeds such as walruses (Odobenidae). The oldest known otariids appear 5–6 Ma after the earliest odobenids, and the remarkably derived craniodental morphology of otariids offers few clues to their early evolutionary history and phylogenetic affinities among pinnipeds. We report a new otariid, Eotaria crypta, from the lower middle Miocene ‘Topanga’ Formation (15–17.1 Ma) of southern California, represented by a partial mandible with well-preserved dentition. Eotaria crypta is geochronologically intermediate between ‘enaliarctine’ stem pinnipedimorphs (16.6–27 Ma) and previously described otariid fossils (7.3–12.5 Ma), as well as morphologically intermediate by retaining an M2 and a reduced M1 metaconid cusp and lacking P2–4 metaconid cusps. Eotaria crypta eliminates the otariid ghost lineage and confirms that otariids evolved from an ‘enaliarctine’-like ancestor.  相似文献

Antarctic krill Euphausia superba is a predominant species in the Southern Ocean, it is very sensitive to climate change, and it supports large stocks of fishes, seabirds, seals and whales in Antarctic marine ecosystems. Modern krill stocks have been estimated directly by net hauls and acoustic surveys; the historical krill density especially the long-term one in the Southern Ocean, however, is unknown. Here we inferred the relative krill population changes along the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) over the 20th century from the trophic level change of Antarctic fur seal Arctocephalus gazella using stable carbon (δ(13)C) and nitrogen (δ(15)N) isotopes of archival seal hairs. Since Antarctic fur seals feed preferentially on krill, the variation of δ(15)N in seal hair indicates a change in the proportion of krill in the seal's diets and thus the krill availability in local seawater. For the past century, enriching fur seal δ(15)N values indicated decreasing krill availability. This is agreement with direct observation for the past ~30 years and suggests that the recently documented decline in krill populations began in the early parts of the 20th century. This novel method makes it possible to infer past krill population changes from ancient tissues of krill predators.  相似文献

Understanding the regulation of natural populations has been a long-standing research program in ecology. Current knowledge on marine mammals and seabirds is biased toward the adult component of populations and lacking are studies investigating the juvenile component. Our goal was to estimate demographic parameters on the pre-weaning stage of a subantarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) population on Amsterdam Island, suspected to be regulated by density-dependence. The influence of abundance on growth parameters (length and weight) and survival was assessed over a study period spanning 16 years. We evidenced a negative trend in population growth rate when density increased. Density-dependence models were favored for pup body size and mass growth. Abundance had a clear influence on body length at high population-density, pups grew slower and were smaller at weaning than pups born in years with low population density. Abundance partly explained pup body mass variation and a weak effect was detected on pre-weaning survival. The causal mechanisms may be increased competition for food resources between breeding females, leading to a reduction of maternal input to their pups. Our results suggested that pup favored survival over growth and the development of their diving abilities in order to withstand the extreme fasting periods that are characteristic of this fur seal population. This analysis provides significant insight of density-dependent processes on early-life demographic parameters of a long lived and top-predator species, and more specifically on the pre-weaning stage with important consequences for our understanding of individual long-term fitness and population dynamics.  相似文献

Diving behaviour was investigated in female subantarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) breeding on Amsterdam Island, Indian Ocean. Data were collected using electronic Time Depth Recorders on 19 seals during their first foraging trip after parturition in December, foraging trips later in summer, and during winter. Subantarctic fur seals at Amsterdam Island are nocturnal, shallow divers. Ninety-nine percent of recorded dives occurred at night. The diel dive pattern and changes in dive parameters throughout the night suggest that fur seals follow the nycthemeral migrations of their main prey. Seasonal changes in diving behaviour amounted to the fur seals performing progressively deeper and longer dives from their first foraging trip through winter. Dive depth and dive duration increased from the first trip after parturition (16.6 ± 0.5 m and 62.1 ± 1.6 s respectively, n=1000) to summer (19.0 ± 0.4 m and 65 ± 1 s, respectively, n=2000) through winter (29.0 ± 1.0 m and 91.2 ± 2.2 s, respectively, n=800). In summer, subantarctic fur seals increased the proportion of time spent at the bottom during dives of between 10 and 20 m, apparently searching for prey when descending to these depths, which corresponded to the oceanic mixed layer. In winter, fur seals behaved similarly when diving between 20 and 50 m, suggesting that the most profitable depths for feeding moved down during the study period. Most of the dives did not exceed the physiological limits of individuals. Although dive frequency did not vary (10 dives/h of night), the vertical travel distance and the time spent diving increased throughout the study period, while the post-dive interval decreased, indicating that subantarctic fur seals showed a greater diving effort in winter, compared to earlier seasons. A 16-yr-old adult male northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) was found dead in its outdoor pool in November 1995. The animal was maintained at Mystic Aquarium (Mystic, Connecticut, USA) from March 1980 to November 1995. Gross necropsy findings included hemoperitoneum and locally extensive gastric intramural hemorrhage that involved the posterior fundic, antral, and pyloric regions and extended into the duodenum. The gastric mural thickening grossly resembled hemangioma, and the gastric serosa was ruptured at the site of maximal mural expansion. In histologic sections of the stomach, a cribiform network of fibrin, which encompassed numerous variably-sized aggregates of closely packed erythrocytes, markedly expanded the submucosa. No vascular endothelium was identified in serial histologic sections of the expanded gastric submucosa stained with hematoxylin and eosin or immunohistochemically with antibodies to vimentin and Factor VIII-related antigen, establishing an absence of hemangioma. Carstairs' and Weigert's histochemical stains confirmed that the framework expanding the submucosa was fibrin. Although the appearance of the gastric wall resembled hemangioma, a population of neoplastic endothelial cells was not identified within the submucosal expansion of hemorrhage and fibrin, and microscopic evidence was most consistent with the diagnosis of gastric intramural hematoma. This lesion is a rare pathologic event that has not been reported in marine mammals, but one that should be included in diagnostic considerations of hemoperitoneum and gastric mural expansion.  相似文献

Non-offspring maternal care should be rare due to the high costs of raising offspring, particularly lactation, but nonetheless occurs in a variety of taxa. Misguided parental care, associated with recognition errors and/or inattentiveness by lactating females, has been hypothesized as an explanation for allolactation in mammals. In an extension of this hypothesis, we suggest that milk-stealing is parasitism instigated by non-filial offspring, and that maternal behaviour is of secondary interest in an evolutionary context if she is unaware of the interaction. We provide evidence for frequent milk-stealing attempts by Subantarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) pups, including an example of sustained non-maternal care (> three months) for one pup during the confirmed absence of his mother, leading to a weaning mass equal to the population mean. We also present only the second account of fostering/twins in the species at this locality. We suggest that rather than the hitherto suggested rare and anomalous behaviour, milk-stealing behaviour (while not always successful) is common.  相似文献

The reproductive tracts of male sub-Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis ( n = 123), taken at Gough Island (40° 20'S, 9° 54'W) between November 1977 and October 1978, were examined. The presence of spermatozoa in the epididymal tubules showed that all males ≥4 years old had reached puberty, and the marked slower increase in mean testis weight and baculum length suggested that sexual (social) maturity was approached by 8-year-olds. Full adulthood was attained at 10–11 years of age based on the peak in mean testis and prostate weights, and mean baculum length. Secondary sexual characteristics were only fully developed in males ≥9 years old. A significant decline in mean testosterone concentration, and in testis, epididymis and prostate weights showed that adult males were reproductively quiescent during winter from May to July when seminiferous and epididymal tubules had lowest mean diameters with no spermatozoa present. Both the mean plasma testosterone concentration and mean testis weight peaked twice during the austral summer. The first peak coincided with the breeding season, and the second peak with the moulting period when adult males were impotent. Photoperiodic cueing might explain this seasonal trend.  相似文献

Males of gregarious pinnipeds are often aggressive to conspecifics and sexual coercion of females is commonplace. Males of some pinniped species have been known to attempt interspecific copulation, occasionally being successful in producing hybrid offspring. The most extreme case of interspecific sexual coercion reported concerned species from different families. We report a case of interspecific sexual harassment bridging the rank of vertebrate class.  相似文献

The fasting metabolism of 71- to 235-d-old subantarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) pups from Amsterdam Island, southern Indian Ocean, was investigated during the long foraging trips of their mothers. Body lipid reserves were proportionally greater in female than male pups and higher in postmoult (37%) than premoult (10%) animals. The mass-specific rate of mass loss did not differ between the sexes but was lower than observed in other species. Daily mass loss was estimated to 56% fat, 10% protein, and 34% water. The rate of protein catabolism (15 g d(-1)) was negatively related to the size of initial lipid stores and accounted for 9% (+/-1%) of total energy expenditure. However, body composition changes during the fast were not equal between the sexes, with females relying more on protein catabolism than males (11% and 5% of total energy expenditure, respectively). Energy expenditure (270 kJ kg(-1) d(-1)) and metabolic water production (11.5 mL kg(-1) d(-1)) rates are the lowest reported for an otariid species. These results suggest that subantarctic fur seal pups greatly reduce activity levels to lower energy expenditure in addition to adopting protein-sparing metabolic pathways in order to survive the extreme fasts they must endure on Amsterdam Island.  相似文献
