Tree growth is largely driven by climate conditions in arid and alpine areas. A strong change in climate from warm-dry to warm-wet has already been observed in northwest China. However, little is known about the impacts of regional climate variability on the radial growth of trees along elevations of the eastern Tianshan Mountains. Consequently, we developed three tree-ring width chronologies of Schrenk spruce (Picea schrenkiana Fisch. et Mey.) ranging in elevation from 2159 to 2552 m above sea level (a.s.l.), which play an important role in the forestry ecosystem, agriculture, and local economy of Central Asia. In our study, the correlation analyses of growth-drought using the monthly standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI) at different temporal scales demonstrated that drought in growing season was the main factor limiting tree growth, regardless of elevation. The relationships between radial growth of Schrenk spruce and main climate factors were relatively stable by moving correlation function, and the trend of STD chronologies and basal area increment (BAI) also showed a synchronous decline across the three elevations in recent decades. And meanwhile, slight differences in responses to climate change in radial growth along elevations were examined. The drought stress increased as elevations decreased. Radial growth at the higher elevation depended on moisture availability due to high temperature, as indicated by the significant negative correlation with mean temperature in the late growing season of the previous year (August-September, p < 0.001). However, radial growth at the lower elevation were restricted by drought stress due to less precipitation and higher temperatures, as demonstrated by the significant negative correlation with mean temperature but positive with total precipitation in the early growing season of the current year (April-May, p < 0.05). In addition, the decline of radial growth (BAI) at the higher elevation (3.710 cm2 yr−1/decade, p < 0.001) was faster than that of the middle elevation (2.344 cm2 yr−1/decade, p < 0.001) and the lower elevation (3.005 cm2 yr−1/decade, p < 0.001) since 2000, indicating that the trees at higher elevation of a relatively humid environment were more susceptible to the effects of climate change due to their poor adaptability to water deficit. Therefore, the forest ecosystems would be suppressed as a result of increasing drought stress in the future, especially in the high-elevation forests of arid and semi-arid areas.  相似文献

For both its climatic and ecological importance, Schrenk spruce (Picea schrenkiana) is a crucial tree species living at mid-altitude on the western area of the Tianshan Mountains. It plays a key role on understanding climatic change in the Tianshan Mountains in the past 500 years. However, whether the relationship between tree growth and limiting climate factors is stable over time is still not well-known. In this study, standard and residual chronologies of four 100-year age classes (AC1 < 110a, 110a < AC2 < 210a, 210a < AC3 < 310a and AC4 > 310a) were established for detecting divergence in climate–growth relationships as well as comparing low-frequency and high-frequency variations. The results show that climate can account for a high amount of variance in tree-ring width and higher climate sensitivity was detected in younger trees. Younger trees (<210a) exhibit significantly negative growth responses to mean monthly air temperature of previous June and positive relationship with total monthly precipitation of current April and May, while mean monthly air temperature of current March may inhibit growth of older trees (>210a). Tree-ring chronology statistics and response function reveal that the age-growth patterns are non-monotonic. Our results together with previous studies demonstrate that the age effects on tree-ring growth–climate response is attributed to a combination of genetic characteristics and site microclimate, which suggests that it is necessary to consider both age-dependent and species-specific climate responses when using tree-ring measurements as a proxy for valid climate reconstructions.  相似文献

The effect of global warming on alpine forests is complex. It is crucial, therefore, to investigate the effects of climate change on the radial growth of trees at different altitudes. The tree growth–climate relationship remains poorly understood at large spatial scales in the Tianshan Mountains, China. Schrenk spruce (P. schrenkiana) is a unique tree species to this area. In this study, we collected tree-ring width and maximum density data from nine plots along an altitudinal gradient. Results showed that altitude affected both tree-ring width and maximum density. At high altitudes, tree-ring width was positively correlated with temperature in February of the current year. Tree-ring width was also positively correlated with precipitation in July of the previous year, and January and July of the current year, and negatively correlated with the monthly diurnal temperature range (DTR). At low altitudes, tree-ring width was negatively correlated with temperature in the early growing season and the growing season. Tree-ring width was positively correlated with precipitation in June and September of the previous year, and May of the current year. The tree-ring maximum density was positively correlated with temperature and the DTR of the growing season, and negatively correlated with precipitation in winter and growing season. Moving correlation analysis showed that the positive response of tree-ring width to precipitation in the growing season was enhanced over time at high altitudes. In the low-altitude trees, the negative response of tree-ring width to temperature in the growing season was reduced, while the positive response to precipitation in the growing season was enhanced. The positive response relationship between tree-ring maximum density and the temperature in July weakened over time. At low altitudes, the negative response of tree-ring maximum density to winter precipitation was strengthened, and a stable negative response to July precipitation was observed. As the climate becomes wetter and warmer in the Tianshan Mountains, our results suggest that the radial growth of trees may benefit at elevations above 2400 m a.s.l. There was no obvious elevation limit for the increase in tree-ring maximum density. These findings provide a basis for sustainable forest management under global climate change.

We sampled Rocky Mountain junipers (RMJ) to produce a multi-century tree-ring chronology from a relict lava flow, the Paxton Springs Malpais (PAX), in the Zuni Mountains of western New Mexico. Our objective was to assess crossdating potential for RMJ growing on the volcanic badlands of the region, investigate potential relationships between climate and RMJ growth, and investigate temporal variability in relationships identified between climate and RMJ growing at our site. We hypothesized that, similar to other drought stressed-conifers growing on the lava flows, RMJ responds to climate factors that influence and indicate moisture availability. We found a high average mean sensitivity value (0.53), which indicated the PAX chronology exhibited enough annual variability to capture fluctuations in environmental conditions. The average interseries correlation (0.74) indicated confident crossdating and a significant association of annual growth among trees within the stand. The positive correlation between the PAX chronology and total precipitation for the local water year was significant (r = 0.53; P < 0.001). Significant positive correlations also were identified between monthly PDSI, monthly total precipitation, and RMJ radial growth. Analyses of temporal stability indicated that the positive relationship between RMJ growth at the PAX site and monthly PDSI was the most stable relationship during the period of analysis (1895–2007). More importantly, we identified a unique inverse relationship between radial growth and monthly mean temperature during periods of the preceding year and current growing year, the first such finding of a strong temperature response for a low-mid elevation tree species in the American Southwest. Our results confirm that RMJ samples collected on the Paxton Springs Malpais are sensitive to climate factors that affect moisture availability, further suggesting that RMJ may be suitable for use in dendroclimatic research at additional locations across the broad distribution of the species.  相似文献

Rhododendron przewalskii is an important dwarf shrub species in alpine environments of western Sichuan that offers a unique opportunity to expand current dendrochronological networks into extreme environments beyond the survival limit of trees. Our objectives in this study are to evaluate the dendroclimatological potentials of R. przewalskii and determine the major limiting climate factor for the species’ growth rings. We sampled 25 cross-sections of R. przewalskii at an elevation of 4050 m, about 150 m above treeline, on Zhegu Mountain of Miyaluo in western Sichuan of southeastern Tibetan Plateau. R. przewalskii has well-defined growth rings such that most stem sections could be cross-dated. The resulting 61-year long standard chronology (A.D. 1949–2009) was derived from 38 series from 19 cross-sections. Response analysis revealed that radial growth of the Zhegu Mountain R. przewalskii is significantly and negatively correlated to late winter temperature (January–February), mainly driven by maximum temperatures. This correlation indicates that colder daytime temperatures during late-winter lead to improved growth the following growing season. Minimum winter temperatures do not appear important for radial growth of this population. R. przewalskii ring widths are also strongly correlated to late-winter maximum temperatures over the southeastern Tibetan Plateau region. April maximum and July minimum temperatures are positively and significantly correlated to radial growth suggesting that warm April days and warm July nights promote current-season radial growth. In contrast, radial growth is only negatively correlated to April precipitation, indicating that wet soil conditions inhibit total radial increment. The main differences of R. przewalskii compared to tree species living at high-altitude nearby regions is that R. przewalskii has a weaker positive growth response to summer temperature and winter minimum temperature, but a much stronger negative response to winter temperature. Due to the strong climatic signal recorded in the growth curves of R. przewalskii, this dwarf shrub should be useful for climate–growth studies in alpine regions where no forests are present.  相似文献

We developed six tree-ring width chronologies of Siberian spruce (Picea obovata) from the low elevation forest of the southern Altay Mountains in northern Xinjiang, China. Although the six chronologies come from different sampling sites, significant correlations existed among the chronologies (r  0.477), and the first principal component (PC1) accounted for 72.2% of total variance over their common period 1825–2010. Correlation response analysis revealed that radial growth of Siberian spruce is mainly limited by a 12-month precipitation starting from July of the previous year to June of the current year. We therefore developed a July–June precipitation reconstruction spanning 1825–2009, which explained 65.5% of the instrumental variance for the period 1962–2009. The information of our precipitation reconstruction suggested that dry conditions existed for the periods 1829–1838, 1852–1855, 1876–1888, 1898–1911, 1919–1923, 1932–1936, 1943–1955, 1963–1968, 1973–1984 and 2007–2009, and wet conditions for the periods AD 1825–1828, 1839–1851, 1856–1875, 1889–1897, 1912–1918, 1924–1931, 1937–1942, 1956–1962, 1969–1972 and 1985–2006. Spatial climate correlation analyses with gridded land surface data revealed that our precipitation reconstruction contains a strong precipitation signal for the Altay Mountain ranges. Our reconstruction agreed with the moisture-sensitive tree ring width series of Siberian larch from the Altay Mountains of Mongolia on a decadal timescale. In addition, in contrast to a drying trend in north central China, a clear wetting trend has occurred in the southern Altay Mountains since 1980s.  相似文献

Response of climate warming on tree-ring formation has attracted much attention during recent years. However, most studies are based on statistical analysis, lacking understanding of tree-physiological processes, especially in the mountainous regions of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Herein, we firstly use an updated new version of the tree-ring process-based Vaganov-Shashkin model (VS-oscilloscope) to simulate tree-ring formation and its relationships with climate factors during the past six decades. Our analyses covered 341 sampled trees growing within elevations ranging from 2750 to 4575 m a.s.l. at five sampling sites across the TP. Simulated tree-ring width series are significantly (p < 0.01) correlated with actual tree-ring width chronologies during their common interval periods. Starting dates of tree-ring formation are determined by temperature at all five sampling sites. After the initiation of tree stem cambial activity, soil moisture content has a significant effect on tree radial growth. Ending dates of cambial activity are driven by temperature over the whole study region. Simulated results indicate differences between wide and narrow tree-rings are mostly induced by soil moisture content, especially during the first half of the growing season, when effects from temperature variations are minor. Interestingly, we detected significantly (p < 0.001) increased relative growth rates due to higher soil moisture content after the year 1985 at the five sampling sites. However, the variability of mean relative growth rates due to temperature is negligible before and after that. Based on the successful application of VS-oscilloscope modeling on the high-elevation tree stands on the TP, our study provides a new perspective on tree radial growth process and their varying relationships to climate factors during the past six decades.  相似文献

Araucaria angustifolia is a dioecious dominant tree in araucaria forests in Brazil and Argentina, South America. The species is nowadays critically endangered by deforestation and global climate change. The goal of this study was to analyse the dynamics of radial growth in this species and its association with climatic variables, according to the sex, at its western range boundary in Argentina. Standard dendrochronological techniques were applied on stem disks from female and male trees. Xylem anatomical anomalies made the tree-ring dating process difficult. Female and male trees showed growth patterns that changed over time, not being significant in the 1950–1990 period and highly significant from the 1990s onwards (p < 0.1) when female trees had a higher growth rate. Female and male trees showed a different association with climatic variables. No significant effect of temperature and precipitation was identified on female trees. For male trees, rainfall had a positive effect in August, before the growing season, and a negative effect at the end of the growing season (March). Temperature had a negative effect on male trees, before and during the growing season (February and January, respectively). No effect of SOI was detected on both sexes. Results emphasised the usefulness of A. angustifolia for dendrochronological studies and the value of dioecious species for the study of sex-related growth–climate association.  相似文献

We examined tree-ring growth in a naturally seeded old-growth slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii) stand in coastal Georgia to develop growth-climate models and reconstruct past climatic conditions during the mid and late 1800s. We generated earlywood, latewood, and annual ring chronologies dating to 1818, based on 40 cores collected from 22 trees at the Wormsloe State Historic Site near Savannah, Georgia, with 28 cores dating before 1900. We used correlation and response function analysis to relate tree-ring growth to climatic variables and El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) indices. Water availability (represented by PDSI and secondarily, precipitation) was the most important factor determining growth for all three series, with latewood and September PDSI showing the strongest relationship. Like other species in the southeastern United States, moisture in the late winter and spring was crucial for earlywood development, while latewood and annual growth was enhanced in cooler, wetter summers, particularly with hurricanes bringing rainfall late in the growing season. Earlywood growth was greater following +ENSO (winter) phases and −NAO (winter) phases – for both indices, times when the northern Georgia coast is often relatively cool and wet. A verified split-calibration regression model based on latewood ring growth showed temporal stability and accounted for 27% of the variation in the observed September PDSI record from 1895 to 2009 (mean reduction in error = 0.21 and coefficient of efficiency = 0.05). During the instrument record, the timing of reconstructed and observed dry and moist periods matched closely; prior to that, reconstructed PDSI values indicated drought from the early 1840s to late 1850s – a period of unusually low latewood growth.  相似文献

The aim of this research is to investigate changes in the annual radial increment of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in the vicinity of intensive (3–10 km) and moderate (11–20 km) industrial pollution during different growth periods (growth promotion, inhibition, and recovery). Low level of emission was beneficial for tree growth during the growth promotion period, and the annual radial increment in the zones of intensive and moderate pollution increased by approximately 15–25% and 10%, respectively. Severe loss was reported to forests during the growth inhibition period when nitrogen and sulphur dioxide emissions were 37–40 thousand (thou.) tons per year. About 40–45% tree radial increment loss was observed in the stands closest to the pollution source, and 15–20% loss was observed for the most distant stands. The stabilization of radial growth decrease and the beginning of recovery of damaged stands began in 1988–1992, when the annual amount of industrial emissions and environmental pollution were considerably reduced. The stabilization of radial growth and the initiation of recovery after pollution reduction were high for the most damaged stands. Their radial increment was stable and close to that of the control stands in 2000–2011. Stands with less damage growing further from the pollution source were recovered earlier, and their radial increment stabilized near the control increment in 1995–1999. The results of linear regression analysis demonstrated that the impact of pollution is different for stands growing at different distances from the plant, and the impact decreases with distance (R2 = 0.78 and R2 = 0.75, respectively; p < 0.05).  相似文献

Comprehensive studies to identify species-specific drivers of survival to environmental stress, reproduction, growth, and recruitment are vital to gaining a better understanding of the main ecological factors shaping species habitat distribution and dispersal routes. The present study performed a field-based assessment of habitat distribution in the invasive carabid beetle Merizodus soledadinus for the Kerguelen archipelago. The results emphasised humid habitats as a key element of the insect’s realised niche. In addition, insects faced food and water stress during dispersal events. We evaluated quantitatively how water availability and trophic resources governed the spatial distribution of this invasive predatory insect at Îles Kerguelen. Food and water stress survival durations [in 100%, 70%, and 30% relative humidity (RH) conditions] and changes in a set of primary metabolic compounds (metabolomics) were determined. Adult M. soledadinus supplied with water ad libitum were highly tolerant to prolonged starvation (LT50 = 51.7 ± 6.2 d). However, food-deprived insect survival decreased rapidly in moderate (70% RH, LT50 = 30.37 ± 1.39 h) and low (30% RH, LT50 = 13.03 ± 0.48 h) RH conditions. Consistently, body water content decreased rapidly in insects exposed to 70% and 30% RH. Metabolic variation evidenced the effects of food deprivation in control insects (exposed to 100% RH), which exhibited a progressive decline of most glycolytic sugars and tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates. Most metabolite levels were elevated levels during the first few hours of exposure to 30% and 70% RH. Augmented alanine and lactate levels suggested a shift to anaerobic metabolism. Simultaneously, peaks in threonine and glycolytic sugars pointed to metabolic disruption and a progressive physiological breakdown in dehydrating individuals. Overall, the results of our study indicate that the geographic distribution of M. soledadinus populations is highly dependent on habitat RH and water accessibility.  相似文献

We have studied the presence of the foliar endophtye of Picea glauca (white spruce) Phialocephala scopiformis CBS 120377 and its affect on the growth of Choristoneura fumiferana (spruce budworm). Here we examine the transmission of this fungus from 50 trees planted in a test field site to 250 P. glauca seedlings planted under the emerging canopies. After 3 y, the endophyte spread to 40 % of these trees (now 20–30 cm) with an average rugulosin (an anti-insect toxin) concentration of 1 μg g?1. All woody plants within 2 m of the test trees were collected. These were all shown to be negative for P. scopiformis except for some spruce seedlings that arose from seeds (natural generation). This is positive evidence for the horizontal transmission of P. scopiformis and its apparent specificity to P. glauca under field conditions.  相似文献

The growing popularity of digital-repeat photography in field research is seeing traditional field efforts being assisted and even replaced by low-cost cameras. The efficiency of using cameras is obvious, but there is an assumption that they capture the same information as observations made by humans. This paper aims to determine the level of agreement between these two methods of interpreting understory vegetation phenology. We compared daily phenological observations made by low-cost cameras with those made by personnel during field visits every 10 days. Phenophases were defined as the non-spectral, physical developmental stages of Canadian buffaloberry (Shepherdia canadensis) and alpine sweetvetch (Hedysarum alpinum). The relationship between observation methods was quantified using a weighted kappa statistic at three spatial scales ranging from individual plants to areas up to 6 ha. Agreement between the camera observations and those made by field personnel was nearly perfect (Kappa > 0.9) for both the vegetative and reproductive phenology of both study species at all spatial scales. The level of agreement was found to be more variable early in the season when plant growth is more rapid. Overall there was a slight bias in the image interpretations to underestimate the rate of development. Time-lapse photography was found to be an analogous replacement for field visits; however, some plant species are more suitable for observation by camera than others. Spatially, it was determined that observations of a single plant are all that is required to capture the phenology of the surrounding region in excess of 6 ha. This analysis was carried out over a single growing season in the in the Rocky Mountains of western Alberta, Canada.  相似文献

The warming-induced increase in nutrient mineralization and the further increase in atmospheric nitrogen depositions raise the topic of whether and how alpine plants will react to enhanced nutrient availability. Despite several studies have shown the effects of fertilization on primary production of alpine plants, only few studies have considered the influences of nutrients on reproduction. Here, we investigated the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) amendments on cover, number of ramets, flowering effort and phenological timing of Gnaphalium supinum, an arctic-alpine widespread snowbed species. We set up an experimental design with four fertilization treatments (low N, P without additional N, low N + P, and high N + P) and an unfertilized control for three years (2003–2005), within a late snowbed located in the Italian Alps (Gavia Pass, 2700 m a.s.l.). The cover of Gnaphalium supinum was recorded at the peak of the aboveground biomass development in the three years, while the temporal dynamic of ramet density and reproductive phenophases were monitored during the 2005 growing season. The clonal growth of G. supinum resulted to be co-limited by N and P, while the flowering effort was stimulated by P. Flowering date was advanced by P supply, while N alone did not show any significant effect on phenology. In a warming scenario, with a predicted increase in N and P availability by nutrient mineralization and atmospheric deposition, this species should probably experience some benefits for its growth and reproduction if not limited by other factors such as the length of the growing season or interspecific competition.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of the rehabilitation of abandoned aggregate quarries to calcareous wetlands through a growth experiment at the quarry floor. We tested the effects of planting substrate (fine screenings, coarse rock, transplanted peatball, and topsoil addition to screenings) and springtime water depth (+15, 0, and ?15 cm relative to ground surface) on the growth of Carex aquatilis over 3 years. Survival rate of the transplanted material was 100%. Minimal growth was observed after the first growing season, but by the end of the third growing season the transplanted material had added on average 80, 4, and 3 shoots in the topsoil-amended, intact peatball, and coarse rock treatments, respectively, but lost on average 4 shoots in the fine screenings treatment. The addition of topsoil significantly increased final aboveground biomass (285 ± 49 g per plot) compared to the peatball (40 ± 16 g), rock (36 ± 11 g) and screenings (35 ± 21 g) treatments, which were not significantly different. The effect of water depth did not lead to overall significant differences, as Carex aquatilis ramets were capable of growing in springtime water levels from 15 cm above to 15 cm below ground surface. Our data demonstrate that some flooded abandoned aggregate quarry floors represent suitable sites for conversion to calcareous wetlands, even with a strategy of minimum maintenance, and that wetland species are capable of growth in these largely inorganic settings.  相似文献

Candida sake CPA-1 is an antagonistic yeast that has previously been shown to effectively control Botrytis bunch rot in grapes. The efficacy of biological control agents is dependent on their survival, which may also depend on climatic conditions. However, few studies have evaluated the effect of abiotic factors affecting the survival of biological control agents, such as temperature (T) or relative humidity (RH). In this study, efficacy of C. sake (5 × 107 CFU mL1), which was applied with the additive Fungicover (FC; 50 g L1), was tested against BBR in the laboratory and in field trials under the Atlantic climate conditions of the Bordeaux region (France). The study also evaluated the survival of C. sake under T and RH regimes simulated in climatic chambers. Two or five applications of C. sake plus FC during the growing season significantly reduced BBR severity at harvest by 48% and 82%, respectively, when compared to the control. Similar reductions were achieved after inoculation with selected virulent Botrytis cinerea strains (75% compared to control) in laboratory experiments. C. sake populations showed minimal decreases between field applications and were favored by simulated Atlantic climate conditions. The survival pattern of C. sake exposed to 40 and 45 °C combined with 30% and 100% of RH was described, demonstrating a sharp decrease during the first 24 h. Allowing 48 h for C. sake to incubate and become established on fruits prior to the exposure to 40 °C and 30% RH increased survival (P < 0.05). These results confirm the efficacy of treatment with C. sake plus FC under favorable climatic conditions for BBR development, while survival studies may help to improve the survival and efficacy of yeast BCAs, such as C. sake CPA-1.  相似文献

Different tree species exhibit different phenological and physiological characteristics, leading to complexity in inter-species comparison of stem radial growth response to climate change. This study explored the climate-growth responses of Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) and Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis) in the Qilian Mountains, Northwest China. Meanwhile, Vaganov-Shashkin model (VS-oscilloscope) was used to simulate the relationships between radial growth rates and phenology. The results showed that 1) in their radial growth patterns, Qinghai spruce showed a significant increasing trend, while Chinese pine showed a decreasing trend, and Qinghai spruce has a longer growing season than Chinese pine. 2) For the radial growth-climate dynamic response, Qinghai spruce was influenced in an unstable manner by the mean temperature in the mid-growing season of the current year and the late growing season of the previous year and by the mean minimum temperature in the mid-growing season of the current year, while Chinese pine was influenced in a stable manner by the mean temperature and mean maximum temperature during the growing season of the current year. 3) The radial growth rates of the two conifer species were limited by temperature at the initiation and cessation of growth and by soil moisture at the peak of growth. But Chinese pine was more severely affected by soil moisture than Qinghai spruce in the middle of growth. Therefore, different management and restoration measures should be taken based on the differences in ecological responses and physical and physiological properties of the two conifer species to climate change in the subalpine forest ecosystems in the semiarid and arid regions of Northwest China.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to examine interactions between the seagrass Halodule wrightii and the macroalga Caulerpa prolifera in the Indian River Lagoon, FL, USA, and further if the outcome of the interactions between the two species was influenced by water depth. The experiment involved the manipulation of neighbor presence in plots established at the shallowest (50 cm) and deepest (80 cm) depths at which the two species co-existed at adequate densities to perform removal experiments. Shoot and frond densities were measured at the beginning (April), middle (July) and end (October) of the 6-month growing season, and above- and below-ground biomass values were determined at the end of the experiment (October). In the middle of the growing season H. wrightii had higher shoot densities and greater biomass in plots where C. prolifera had been removed at both water depths. This same pattern in shoot density and biomass for H. wrightii also occurred at the end of the growing season at the 80 cm depth. C. prolifera occurred at higher densities and greater biomass in the 80 cm depth range, but was generally unaffected by the presence of H. wrightii at either depth.  相似文献
