Higher plants not only provide human beings renewable food, building materials and energy, but also play the most important role in keeping a stable environment on earth. Plants differ from animals in many aspects, but the important is that plants are more easily influenced by environment than animals. Plants have a series of fine mechanisms for responding to environmental changes, which has been established during their long-period evolution and artificial domestication. The machinery related to molecular biology is the most important basis. The elucidation of it will extremely and purposefully promote the sustainable utilization of plant resources and make the best use of its current potential under different scales. This molecular mechanism at least includes drought signal recognition (input), signal transduction (many cascade biochemical reactions are involved in this process), signal output, signal responses and phenotype realization, which is a multi-dimension network system and contains many levels of gene expression and regulation. We will focus on the physiological and molecular adaptive machinery of plants under soil water stress and draw a possible blueprint for it. Meanwhile, the issues and perspectives are also discussed. We conclude that biological measures is the basic solution to solving various types of issues in relation to sustainable development and the plant measures is the eventual way.Key Words: Higher plants, soil water stress, gene regulatory network, drought, anti-drought gene resources, signal, ion homeostasis, physiological mechanisms.  相似文献

Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic stresses affecting plant growth and productivity globally. In order to improve the yields of plants growing under salt stress bear remarkable importance to supply sustainable agriculture. Acclimation of plants to salinized condition depends upon activation of cascade of molecular network involved in stress sensing/perception, signal transduction, and the expression of specific stress-related genes and metabolites. Isolation of salt overly sensitive (SOS) genes by sos mutants shed us light on the relationship between ion homeostasis and salinity tolerance. Regulation of antioxidative system to maintain a balance between the overproduction of reactive oxygen species and their scavenging to keep them at signaling level for reinstating metabolic activity has been elucidated. However, osmotic adaptation and metabolic homeostasis under abiotic stress environment is required. Recently, role of phytohormones like Abscisic acid, Jasmonic acid, and Salicylic acid in the regulation of metabolic network under osmotic stress condition has emerged through crosstalk between chemical signaling pathways. Thus, abiotic stress signaling and metabolic balance is an important area with respect to increase crop yield under suboptimal conditions. This review focuses on recent developments on improvement in salinity tolerance aiming to contribute sustainable plant yield under saline conditions in the face of climate change.  相似文献

Heat stress (HS) seriously affects crop growth, causing significant crop yield losses worldwide. The regulatory mechanisms controlling HS tolerance in plants are not well understood. Phytohormones are important molecules for coordinating myriad of phenomena related to plant growth and development. They are also essential endogenous signaling molecules that actively mediate numerous physiological responses under abiotic stress by triggering stress-responsive regulatory genes involved in plant growth. This review updates the central role of various phytohormones—indole acetic acid, gibberellic acid, abscisic acid, cytokinins, ethylene, salicylic acid, brassinosteroids, strigolactone, and jasmonic acid—in regulating the HS response so that plants can adapt to increasing temperature stress. We also reveal how these stress-responsive phytohormones switch on various regulatory gene(s) and genes encoding antioxidants and heat shock proteins (HSPs) to combat HS in various plant species.

Phytohormones play central roles in boosting plant tolerance to environmental stresses, which negatively affect plant productivity and threaten future food security. Strigolactones (SLs), a class of carotenoid‐derived phytohormones, were initially discovered as an “ecological signal” for parasitic seed germination and establishment of symbiotic relationship between plants and beneficial microbes. Subsequent characterizations have described their functional roles in various developmental processes, including root development, shoot branching, reproductive development, and leaf senescence. SLs have recently drawn much attention due to their essential roles in the regulation of various physiological and molecular processes during the adaptation of plants to abiotic stresses. Reports suggest that the production of SLs in plants is strictly regulated and dependent on the type of stresses that plants confront at various stages of development. Recently, evidence for crosstalk between SLs and other phytohormones, such as abscisic acid, in responses to abiotic stresses suggests that SLs actively participate within regulatory networks of plant stress adaptation that are governed by phytohormones. Moreover, the prospective roles of SLs in the management of plant growth and development under adverse environmental conditions have been suggested. In this review, we provide a comprehensive discussion pertaining to SL‐mediated plant responses and adaptation to abiotic stresses.  相似文献

Protein phosphatases are the vital regulatory components of various signal transduction pathways in eukaryotes. Signaling pathways triggered during stress and development have been regulated by different classes of protein phosphatases in plants. Recently, genome-wide expressional analysis in Arabidopsis and crop plant such as rice revealed differential expression pattern for several protein phosphatases under different abiotic stresses, in various tissues and at different developmental stages. This expression pattern could be extrapolated to the possible function of protein phosphatases in abiotic stress signaling and tolerance, and during plant development. Here, we discuss organisation and expression patterns of members of the protein phosphatase gene family, and their potential functional role in plants.  相似文献

Research perspectives towards sustainable plant production through plant breeding on abiotic stress tolerance require interdisciplinary competence. The present paper wants to strengthen awareness of important activities or current insights in plant breeding, plant nutrition and molecular biology to facilitate approximation of the disciplines and to direct efforts in molecular biology early in development towards application. As a consequence of recent discussion on appropriate approaches in systems biology towards crop improvement, a global 'systemic strategy' is presented to identify functional marker candidates for abiotic stress tolerance more efficiently.  相似文献

Growing in their natural environment, plants often encounter unfavorable environmental conditions that interrupt normal plant growth and productivity. Drought, high/low temperature and saline soils are the most common abiotic stresses that plants encounter in their natural environments. Molecular and genomic analyses have facilitated gene discovery and enabled genetic engineering using several functional or regulatory genes that are known to be involved in stress response and preliminary tolerance, to activate specific or broad pathways related to abiotic stress tolerance in plants. Through the use of transgenic technology, goals such as production of plants with desired traits that were unattainable with traditional selection programs are achieved. This review deals with recent advancement in understanding the role of various stress responsive genes and their critical importance for explaining the control mechanism of abiotic stress tolerance and engineering stress tolerant crops based on the expression of specific stress related genes.  相似文献

Polyamines and abiotic stress tolerance in plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Environmental stresses including climate change, especially global warming, are severely affecting plant growth and productivity worldwide. It has been estimated that two-thirds of the yield potential of major crops are routinely lost due to the unfavorable environmental factors. On the other hand, the world population is estimated to reach about 10 billion by 2050, which will witness serious food shortages. Therefore, crops with enhanced vigour and high tolerance to various environmental factors should be developed to feed the increasing world population. Maintaining crop yields under adverse environmental stresses is probably the major challenge facing modern agriculture where polyamines can play important role. Polyamines (PAs)(putrescine, spermidine and spermine) are group of phytohormone-like aliphatic amine natural compounds with aliphatic nitrogen structure and present in almost all living organisms including plants. Evidences showed that polyamines are involved in many physiological processes, such as cell growth and development and respond to stress tolerance to various environmental factors. In many cases the relationship of plant stress tolerance was noted with the production of conjugated and bound polyamines as well as stimulation of polyamine oxidation. Therefore, genetic manipulation of crop plants with genes encoding enzymes of polyamine biosynthetic pathways may provide better stress tolerance to crop plants. Furthermore, the exogenous application of PAs is also another option for increasing the stress tolerance potential in plants. Here, we have described the synthesis and role of various polyamines in abiotic stress tolerance in plants.Key words: abiotic stress tolerance, putrescine, spermidine, spermine, polyamines  相似文献
