Large, retarded bulbs of the Iris cv. Ideal flower readily after exposure to appropriate preplanting conditions, whereas smaller bulbs flower with decreased frequency. Flower initiation occurs when apices from large, retarded bulbs are cultured on either Murashige-Skoog medium supplemented with gibberellic acid, or on the same medium without gibberellic acid on which scales from large bulbs have been incubated. Since floral initiation seldom occurs in explants from small bulbs, it is likely that reduced flowering of small bulbs relates in part to characteristics of the apical meristem. Apical dome diameter is one characteristic of retarded (and freshly dug) bulbs that is positively correlated with bulb size. However, whereas prolonged storage at retarding temperature increases the frequency of flowering of smaller bulbs, there is not a concomitant increase in apical dome diameter. Moreover, the ratio of apical dome diameter to bulb size in freshly dug bulbs does not increase measurably with later digging date indicating that apical dome size is not correlated with bulb maturity.  相似文献

Olfactory bulb size was measured in 146 species of Carnivora in order to examine whether recently observed functional patterns for overall brain size were similar for component parts of the brain. Comparative measures were analysed in relation to various allometric characters (body, brain and skull size), phylogeny, behaviour and ecology. Olfactory bulbs are significantly and positively correlated with all allometric variables, but indices of skull size correlate slightly more closely than other variables. This probably relates to functional aspects of skull size, facial proportions, and anterior elements of the brain. Phylogenetic associations were examined by two comparative methods: the method of independent contrasts and phylogenetic autoregression. Both revealed similar phylogenetic correlation at generic and familial levels. Using calculated values from either method, relative olfactory bulb size only correlates with zonation among seven behavioural and ecological variables; aquatic otters have smaller bulb sizes than carnivores of other zonal types. This agrees with discussion about the diminution of olfactory communication in aquatic environments. Also, olfactory bulb size correlates with home range size, which is consistent with a recent model on the use of olfaction for foraging in designated home ranges. Generally, comparative differences in olfactory bulb size in carnivores do not associate with functional variables found in other comparative studies. Nevertheless, future analyses of specific brain components in mammals may be more useful than overall brain size for testing evolutionary hypotheses of mammalian brain size.  相似文献

Although odour-mediated interactions among plants, spider mites and predatory mites have been extensively studied above-ground, belowground studies are in their infancy. In this paper, we investigate whether feeding by rust mites (Aceria tulipae) cause tulip bulbs to produce odours that attract predatory mites (Neoseiulus cucumeris). Since our aim was to demonstrate such odours and not their relevance under soil conditions, the experiments were carried out using a classic Y-tube olfactometer in which the predators moved on a Y-shaped wire in open air. We found that food-deprived female predators can discriminate between odours from infested bulbs and odours from uninfested bulbs or artificially wounded bulbs. No significant difference in attractiveness to predators was found between clean bulbs and bulbs either wounded 30 min or 3 h before the experiment. These results indicate that it may not be simply the wounding of the bulbs, but rather the feeding by rust mites, which causes the bulb to release odours that attract N. cucumeris. Since bulbs are belowground plant structures, the olfactometer results demonstrate the potential for odour-mediated interactions in the soil. However, their importance in the actual soil medium remains to be demonstrated.  相似文献

In factorial nutrition treatments, for a second season, with three rates of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and some additional treatments with magnesium, on two bulb sizes of Golden Harvest and Elmus tulip, the effect of nitrogen was again found to be dominant. Nitrogen deficiency decreased bulb yields, leaf area, stem length (with one exception) and flower size; it also retarded flowering: the majority of small nitrogen-deficient bulbs produced only single leaves. Deficiencies of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium had more marked effects than in the first season of treatment and generally reduced bulb yields and leaf area; in some instances stem length and flower size were also reduced. High phosphorus advanced the flowering of Elmus bulbs. The relationships between nutrition and mineral composition of the bulbs showed consistent trends determined by rates and duration of treatments, planting size and variety.  相似文献

Modern birds possess an olfactory apparatus similar to that of other vertebrates, yet the major evolutionary forces that drove the evolution of diversity in olfactory capabilities in birds remain elusive. Several non-mutually exclusive evolutionary scenarios for the evolution of olfactory capability in birds have been proposed. Olfactory capability may have evolved due to its role in recognition in social contexts. In addition, olfactory capability may have evolved because it provides a selective advantage in foraging or navigation. Finally, olfactory capability could be favored whenever the ecological conditions of species hindered the use of other senses and/or favored olfaction. Here we evaluate predictions from these hypotheses in a comparative study using a species-level phylogeny of 142 bird species and considering the indirect effects of some predictors on others. We find an interactive effect of aquatic dependence and diet on the size of the olfactory bulb: vegetarian and omnivore birds living in aquatic environments have larger olfactory bulbs than terrestrial birds, whereas species with an animal diet, aquatic and terrestrial species have similar-sized olfactory bulbs. In addition, the size of the olfactory bulb was weakly related with social complexity, with colonial species having relatively larger olfactory bulb than solitary breeders or those forming small aggregations. Our results suggest that the role of foraging in driving enhancements in the avian olfactory apparatus is contingent on ecological conditions that may affect the transmission of odor-based signals. This provides evidence for the largely neglected possibility that the evolution of the olfactory apparatus of birds has been driven by the interaction between ecological and behavioral traits, rather than being solely due to main effects of these traits.  相似文献

Tulip mother bulbs contain daughter bulbs, and second-generationdaughter bulbs are initiated within these daughter bulbs, fromFebruary to July. Initiation takes place progressively, thefirst-initiated bulbs being in the axils of the outermost scales. The innermost second-generation daughter bulbs are finally initiatedat the same time as the flower within the daughter bulb. Thelatest-formed bulbs grow much more rapidly than the others, and soon become larger than the first-formed ones. Later inthe season, growth of daughter bulbs falls into three phases, corresponding roughly with autumn, winter, and spring; growthis rapid in autumn and spring, and slower in winter. The ratesof daughter bulb growth in the autumn are affected by the amountof suppression by the mother bulb apex, but later these differencesdisappear. The durations of the phases of growth also vary withthe position of the daughter bulb. The outer daughter bulbsgrow for a longer time during the autumn phase than the innerones, so that differences in size due to variation in growthrate are partly nullified. In early spring, all daughter bulbsresume rapid growth simultaneously. Final bulb weight is thenapproached asymptotically, with the innermost bulbs having thehighest weights.  相似文献

Little is known about the olfactory capabilities of extinct basal (non-neornithine) birds or the evolutionary changes in olfaction that occurred from non-avian theropods through modern birds. Although modern birds are known to have diverse olfactory capabilities, olfaction is generally considered to have declined during avian evolution as visual and vestibular sensory enhancements occurred in association with flight. To test the hypothesis that olfaction diminished through avian evolution, we assessed relative olfactory bulb size, here used as a neuroanatomical proxy for olfactory capabilities, in 157 species of non-avian theropods, fossil birds and living birds. We show that relative olfactory bulb size increased during non-avian maniraptoriform evolution, remained stable across the non-avian theropod/bird transition, and increased during basal bird and early neornithine evolution. From early neornithines through a major part of neornithine evolution, the relative size of the olfactory bulbs remained stable before decreasing in derived neoavian clades. Our results show that, rather than decreasing, the importance of olfaction actually increased during early bird evolution, representing a previously unrecognized sensory enhancement. The relatively larger olfactory bulbs of earliest neornithines, compared with those of basal birds, may have endowed neornithines with improved olfaction for more effective foraging or navigation skills, which in turn may have been a factor allowing them to survive the end-Cretaceous mass extinction.  相似文献

Floral display (the size, number, and arrangement of open flowers) influences pollinator visitation to animal-pollinated plants and should be an important determinant of reproductive success. We examined variation in the size and number of open flowers in wild daffodils (Narcissus). Our analysis of published data on 45 taxa showed that flower number varied negatively with flower diameter among Narcissus species, which supports the widespread assumption that there is a trade-off between these traits. In contrast, field measurements indicated a positive relation between flower number and diameter within two populations of Narcissus dubius, and no relation was evident after we controlled for variation in bulb size. The discrepancy between inter- and intraspecific patterns may have occurred because variable resource levels obscure trade-offs when variation in flower size is low (e.g., within species). Size-related increases in floral tube length were half as great as corresponding increases in flower diameter, a result that is consistent with stronger stabilizing selection on tube length. Staggered flowering within N. dubius inflorescences limited the mean number of open flowers to <66% of total flower number, and slow expansion by later opening flowers resulted in significant differences in flower size throughout flowering. Although pollinators preferred large flowers, experimental reductions in flower diameter did not affect seed production. Our results illustrate how the relative importance of the factors influencing floral display can vary among levels of biological organization. Interspecific variation in flower size and number appeared to be constrained by allocation trade-offs, but intraspecific variation in both traits was more greatly influenced by plant resource status. Within plants, the size and number of open flowers reflected the relative age of individual flowers and floral longevity.  相似文献

Although many diclinous plants have a flower size dimorphism, the causes and ecological correlates of dimorphism in flower size remain poorly understood. In this paper we quantify the frequency and distribution of flower size dimorphism in the native flora of La Réunion Island. The frequency of flower size dimorphism is lower than in a previous global study suggesting that the dimorphism may limit colonisation success. Flower size dimorphism is significantly more frequent in endemic taxa compared to indigenous taxa, a trend that is particularly evident at the species level, due to the large number of species with male flowers bigger than female flowers and is more common in species-rich lineages. These results suggest that flower size dimorphism may be associated with species divergence. The direction of dimorphism varies between dioecious and monoecious species, suggesting that the mechanisms acting on flower size variation differ in species with these different sexual systems. We thank Jacques Figier and Dominique Strasberg for their encouragement and advice and anonymous reviewers for constructive comments. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to follow time-dependent morphological changes and changes in water status of tulip bulbs (Tulipa gesneriana L., cv. 'Apeldoorn') during bulb storage for 12 weeks at 20 degrees C (non-chilled) or 4 degrees C (chilled) and after planting. MR images reflecting the water content, the relaxation times T1 and T2 (or their reciprocal values, the relaxation rates R1 and R2), and the apparent self-diffusion coefficient of water molecules (ADC), were obtained for intact bulbs. After planting, scape elongation and flowering occurred only in chilled bulbs, while elongation in non-chilled bulbs was retarded. Microscopic observations showed different structural components and high heterogeneity of the bulb tissues. MRI revealed the elongation of the flower bud during storage, which was significantly faster in the chilled bulbs. In addition, MRI demonstrated a redistribution of water between different bulb organs, as well as significant differences in the pattern of this redistribution between the chilled and non-chilled bulbs. Generally, R2 relaxation rates became faster in all bulb organs during storage. At the same time, ADC values remained constant in the chilled bulbs, while exhibiting a significant increase in the non-chilled bulbs.  相似文献

In 2 years, 1972 and 1973, onion bulbs were harvested on various dates, graded into a range of sizes and stored at ambient temperatures. Periodic assessments showed that the number of bulbs that both rotted and sprouted increased with increasing bulb size. Although rotting can be controlled with benomyl seed dressing the increased tendency of large bulbs to sprout could have commercial implications. The date of commencement of sprouting was not affected by bulb size, but the percentage increase of sprouting was faster in the larger bulbs. Delayed harvesting also led to increased sprouting in store.  相似文献

For studies investigating trait evolution, there are at least two important questions. First, have traits under consideration influenced cladogenesis and extinction in the group? Second, how do fossil data alter inferences about trait evolution or diversification‐rate dynamics? However, relatively few studies have assessed these questions. Here, we use recently developed methods to test for trait‐dependent diversification in the New World colubrid snake tribe Lampropeltini. We also integrate data from fossil taxa into phylogenetic estimation of evolutionary parameters using a simple Monte Carlo randomization test. These analyses suggest that ecological conditions in temperate regions are tied to higher rates of cladogenesis, but that body size is not related to diversification in the group. We also find that the inclusion of fossil taxa alters absolute estimates of size and the rate of size evolution, but not the overall pattern of ecomorphological diversification, as well as estimates of evolutionary rates, particularly extinction.  相似文献

One of the major evolutionary trends in flowering plants is the evolution of unisexual flowers (male or female) from perfect flowers. This transition has occurred repeatedly in many taxa and has generated a wonderful array of variation in sexual expression among species. Theoretical studies have proposed a number of mechanisms to explain how this level of variation could be maintained in natural systems. One possible mechanism is the female compensation hypothesis, which predicts that female mutants require an increase in their seed fitness in order to invade a hermaphroditic system. Using Geranium maculatum, I tested this hypothesis and showed that female mothers produced more and larger seeds than hermaphroditic mothers even though they were indistinguishable in their vegetative traits and the flower production. Seeds from females were also more likely to germinate and produced seedlings with larger above- and belowground biomass. These seedlings were more likely to flower than those from hermaphrodites in at least one of the two populations studied. Combined, these results indicated that females in G. maculatum did compensate for their loss of male function by producing more and better seeds than hermaphrodites. This provides a mechanism for the maintenance of female plants in this species.  相似文献

Bud abortion in tulip bulbs studied by magnetic resonance imaging   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
After storage and subsequent planting of flower bulbs, the flower bud frequently appears to be aborted. This physiological aberration is probably caused by a change in the water status of the bulb and may be initiated during storage. The development of bud abortion in tulip bulbs was studied during long-term dry storage of the bulbs at 5 degrees C. The anatomy of individual tulip bulbs was followed non-invasively with T2-weighted NMR imaging, which allowed the monitoring of the growth of the shoot and daughter bulbs. Quantitative maps of T1 and T2 relaxation times of individual bulbs were used to assess regional changes in the water status of different tissues. Parallel to the NMR measurements, bulbs were planted to assess the ultimate flower quality. Moreover, water content, osmolality of tissue sap and ion leakage of excised shoot and scale tissues were determined to obtain information about the water status and viability of the bulbs. Significant decreases during long-term storage were found in T1 and T2 relaxation times in the shoot and particularly in the stamens. An increase in the osmolality of tissue sap and the decrease in relaxation times in the shoot below a certain threshold value attained after 24 weeks of storage, could be indicative for the emergence of bud abortion in tulips.  相似文献

The dry bulb mite, Aceria tulipae, is the most important pest of stored tulip bulbs in The Netherlands. This tiny, eriophyoid mite hides in the narrow space between scales in the interior of the bulb. To achieve biological control of this hidden pest, candidate predators small enough to move in between the bulb scales are required. Earlier experiments have shown this potential for the phytoseiid mite, Neoseiulus cucumeris, but only after the bulbs were exposed to ethylene, a plant hormone that causes a slight increase in the distance between tulip bulb scales, just sufficient to allow this predator to reach the interior part of the bulb. Applying ethylene, however, is not an option in practice because it causes malformation of tulip flowers. In fact, to prevent this cosmetic damage, bulb growers ventilate rooms where tulip bulbs are stored, thereby removing ethylene produced by the bulbs (e.g. in response to mite or fungus infestation). Recently, studies on the role of predatory mites in controlling another eriophyoid mite on coconuts led to the discovery of an exceptionally small phytoseiid mite, Neoseiulus paspalivorus. This predator is able to move under the perianth of coconuts where coconut mites feed on meristematic tissue of the fruit. This discovery prompted us to test N. paspalivorus for its ability to control A. tulipae on tulip bulbs under storage conditions (ventilated rooms with bulbs in open boxes; 23 °C; storage period June–October). Using destructive sampling we monitored predator and prey populations in two series of replicated experiments, one at a high initial level of dry bulb mite infestation, late in the storage period, and another at a low initial dry bulb mite infestation, halfway the storage period. The first and the second series involved treatment with N. paspalivorus and a control experiment, but the second series had an additional treatment in which the predator N. cucumeris was released. Taking the two series of experiments together we found that N. paspalivorus controlled the populations of dry bulb mites both on the outer scale of the bulbs as well as in the interior part of the bulbs, whereas N. cucumeris significantly reduced the population of dry bulb mites on the outer scale, but not in the interior part of the bulb. Moreover, N. paspalivorus was found predominantly inside the bulb, whereas N. cucumeris was only found on the outer scale, thereby confirming our hypothesis that the small size of N. paspalivorus facilitates access to the interior of the bulbs. We argue that N. paspalivorus is a promising candidate for the biological control of dry bulb mites on tulip bulbs under storage conditions in the Netherlands.

A correlation between genome size and cell volume has been observed across diverse assemblages of eukaryotes. We examined this relationship in diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), a phylum in which cell volume is of critical ecological and biogeochemical importance. In addition to testing whether there is a predictive relationship across extant species, we tested whether evolutionary divergences in genome size were correlated with evolutionary divergences in cell size (using independent contrasts). We estimated total DNA content for 16 diatom species using a flow cytometer and estimated cell volumes using critical dimensions with scaling equations. Our independent contrast analyses indicated a significant correlated evolution between genome size and cell volume. We then explored the evolutionary and ecological implications of this evolutionary relationship. Diatom cell volume is an important component of the global carbon cycle; therefore, understanding the mechanisms that drive diatom genome evolution has both evolutionary and ecological importance.  相似文献

Parasites are a major force in evolution, and understanding how host life history affects parasite pressure and investment in disease resistance is a general problem in evolutionary biology. The threat of disease may be especially strong in social animals, and ants have evolved the unique metapleural gland (MG), which in many taxa produce antimicrobial compounds that have been argued to have been a key to their ecological success. However, the importance of the MG in the disease resistance of individual ants across ant taxa has not been examined directly. We investigate experimentally the importance of the MG for disease resistance in the fungus‐growing ants, a group in which there is interspecific variation in MG size and which has distinct transitions in life history. We find that more derived taxa rely more on the MG for disease resistance than more basal taxa and that there are a series of evolutionary transitions in the quality, quantity, and usage of the MG secretions, which correlate with transitions in life history. These shifts show how even small clades can exhibit substantial transitions in disease resistance investment, demonstrating that host–parasite relationships can be very dynamic and that targeted experimental, as well as large‐scale, comparative studies can be valuable for identifying evolutionary transitions.  相似文献
