The ant genus Proformica is very common to Eurasian semi‐deserts, and a few species are parasitized by the slave‐making ants Rossomyrmex. However, the phylogenetic relationship between Proformica (host) and Rossomyrmex (parasite) remains unclear as another closely related genus (Cataglyphis) could be a sister group of Rossomyrmex. This work has two main goals: (i) to study the phylogenetic relationships among Proformica, Rossomyrmex, and other genera of the tribe Formicini, with a special focus on the highly diverse genus Cataglyphis; and (ii) to reconstruct the biogeographical distribution of parasite and host genera. We perform a phylogenetic study for the first time including several species of the genera Rossomyrmex, Proformica, and Cataglyphis. Our results indicate that Proformica and Rossomyrmex are reciprocally monophyletic and that Rossomyrmex is nested within Cataglyphis, rendering the latter paraphyletic. Finally, the ancestral distribution range of the host genus could be situated in Central Asia and subsequently dispersed to Western Europe, whereas additional studies are required to clarify the range of the parasite. 相似文献

Understanding how a single genome creates and maintains distinct phenotypes is a central goal in evolutionary biology. Social insects are a striking example of co‐opted genetic backgrounds giving rise to dramatically different phenotypes, such as queen and worker castes. A conserved set of molecular pathways, previously envisioned as a set of ‘toolkit’ genes, has been hypothesized to underlie queen and worker phenotypes in independently evolved social insect lineages. Here, we investigated the toolkit from a developmental point of view, using RNA‐Seq to compare caste‐biased gene expression patterns across three life stages (pupae, emerging adult and old adult) and two female castes (queens and workers) in the ant Formica exsecta. We found that the number of genes with caste‐biased expression increases dramatically from pupal to old adult stages. This result suggests that phenotypic differences between queens and workers at the pupal stage may derive from a relatively low number of caste‐biased genes, compared to higher number of genes required to maintain caste differences at the adult stage. Gene expression patterns were more similar among castes within developmental stages than within castes despite the extensive phenotypic differences between queens and workers. Caste‐biased expression was highly variable among life stages at the level of single genes, but more consistent when gene functions (gene ontology terms) were investigated. Finally, we found that a large part of putative toolkit genes were caste‐biased at least in some life stages in F. exsecta, and the caste‐biases, but not their direction, were more often shared between F. exsecta and other ant species than between F. exsecta and bees. Our results indicate that gene expression should be examined across several developmental stages to fully reveal the genetic basis of polyphenisms. 相似文献

Anabarilius grahami is a cyprinoid fish endemic to Fuxian Lake, Yunnan, China. In this study, a comprehensive staging series of A. grahami was produced. The embryonic development of A. grahami was divided into six main periods: zygote period, cleavage period, blastula period, gastrula period, segmentation period and hatching period. Its embryonic development is essentially similar to that of zebrafish Danio rerio but relatively slower. The expression patterns of A. grahami sox2, pax6a, six3a and rx2 genes were also cloned and checked during eye development. The four genes showed similar expression patterns to their D. rerio homologues, suggesting the evolutionary conservation of the regulatory network of eye development. 相似文献

为了探讨刺芹侧耳子实体生长发育时期的基因表达变化,本文利用高通量测序技术对刺芹侧耳不同发育时期(菌丝期、原基期、子实体时期)进行RNA-Seq分析,在转录水平上解析差异表达基因在刺芹侧耳生长发育过程中的作用和功能。KEGG功能富集显示,菌丝期差异表达基因主要富集在碳代谢和氨基酸代谢中,其中三羧酸循环中编码柠檬酸合酶、乌头酸水合酶、异柠檬酸脱氢酶、琥珀酰辅酶A合成酶、琥珀酸脱氢酶、苹果酸脱氢酶的基因表达量均上调,说明碳代谢和氨基酸代谢是菌丝时期的主要能量来源;原基期上调的差异表达基因主要富集在脂肪酸代谢,其中RT-PCR定量结果显示原基期编码脂肪酸合酶的基因和编码脂酰辅酶A合成酶的基因下调,编码超氧化物酶的基因和编码过氧化氢酶的基因上调,表明脂肪酸代谢和抗氧化酶对刺芹侧耳原基期维持机体的稳定和生物应激方面起着重要作用。子实体时期上调的差异表达基因主要富集在剪接体、类固醇的生物合成以及AMPK信号通路中,说明环境因子对子实体时期有一定的影响。 相似文献

Summary. Caste polyphenism is a multifaceted phenomenon, most evident in the marked differences in reproductive capacity and longevity between queens and workers. The mechanisms underlying caste differentiation and division of labor are mainly addressed in the honey bee, and recently have been studied at the molecular level. Yet, generalizations drawn from studies on this model organism require validation by comparative studies. We choose Melipona quadrifasciata, a sister-group species to honey bees, to investigate differences in gene expression between newly emerged adult queens and workers. RNA extracts were subjected to a differential display protocol (DDRT-PCR). The putative differentially expressed genes, for which annotation was available, were validated by RT-PCR and hybridization. Differential expression was observed for myosin, projectin, kettin, cytochrome P450, Rab11 and Sas10. Except for kettin, all of these were overexpressed in the worker caste. Projectin and kettin could play roles in caste-specific flight muscle organization. The putative Rab11 and Sas10 homolog genes could be involved in fertility-related cell signaling and in longevity-related gene silencing, respectively. Cytochrome P450 overexpression in Melipona workers corroborates similar findings in the honey bee, thus indicating a common function in the social insect caste syndrome.Received 9 January 2003; revised 10 March 2004; accepted 2 April 2004. 相似文献

Toothed whales are one group of marine mammals that has developed special adaptations, such as echolocation for predation, to successfully live in a dynamic aquatic environment. Their fat metabolism may differ from that of other mammals because toothed whales have acoustic fats. Gene expression in the metabolic pathways of animals can change with respect to their evolution and environment. A real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT‐qPCR) is a reliable technique for studying the relative expressions of genes. However, since the accuracy of RT‐qPCR data is totally dependent on the reference gene, the selection of the reference gene is an essential step. In this study, 10 candidate reference genes (ZC3H10, FTL, LGALS1, RPL27, GAPDH, FTH1, DCN, TCTP, NDUS5, and UBIM) were initially tested for amplification efficiency using RT‐qPCR. After excluding DCN, the remaining nine genes, which are nearly 100% efficient, were selected for the gene stability analysis. Stable reference genes across eight different fat tissue, liver, and muscle samples from Grampus griseus were identified by four algorithms, which were provided in Genorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper, and Delta CT. Finally, a RefFinder comprehensive ranking was performed based on the stability values, and the nine genes were ranked as follows: LGALS1 > FTL > GAPDH > ZC3H10 > FTH1 > NDUS5 > TCTP > RPL27 > UBIM. The LGALS1 and FTL genes were identified as the most stable novel reference genes. The third‐ranked gene, GAPDH, is a well‐known housekeeping gene for mammals. Ultimately, we suggest the use of LGALS1 as a reliable novel reference gene for genomics studies on the lipid‐related aquatic adaptations of toothed whales. 相似文献

Abstract A possible stimulatory effect of overwintering on gyne development in Iridomyrmex humilis (Mayr) was investigated. Although gyne-potent larvae are present in the nest throughout the year, small queenless colony fragments composed of freshly overwintered ants (collected in late winter or early spring) produced 3–8 times more gynes than comparable fragments made up of non-freshly overwintered ants (collected at other times of the year). Apparently, this stimulatory effect of overwintering acts on both the developmental potential of larvae and the tendency of workers to rear sexually competent larvae as gynes; queenless colony fragments in which either the brood or workers were freshly overwintered produced more gynes than fragments composed of non-freshly overwintered workers or brood but fewer than fragments containing both brood and workers freshly overwintered. This increased sexualization potential of larvae due to overwintering is enough to overcome weak pheromonal inhibition of queens associated with low queen number; a single queen in a large freshly overwintered colony fragment is insufficient to inhibit gyne development, whereas ten queens are totally inhibitory. In non-freshly overwintered colony fragments one queen is completely inhibitory. Variability in egg developmental potential according to queen age does not appear to play a major role in the seasonal production of gynes, because at least some eggs of very young queens (less than 3 weeks old) are capable of gyne development. In the field this stimulatory effect of overwintering is superimposed on a seasonal fluctuation in the combined strength of pheromonal queen control. In southern France, gynes are produced only in spring where they arise primarily from overwintered larvae just after a sharp drop in queen number, and presumably the total level of inhibitory queen pheromone, due to the massive execution of queens by workers. 相似文献

Development is often described as temporal sequences of developmental stages (DSs). When tables of DS are defined exclusively in the time domain they cannot discriminate histogenetic differences between different positions along a spatial reference axis. We introduce a table of DSs for the developing chick optic tectum (OT) based on time‐ and space‐dependent changes in quantitative morphometric parameters, qualitative histogenetic features and immunocytochemical pattern of several developmentally active molecules (Notch1, Hes5, NeuroD1, β‐III‐Tubulin, synaptotagmin‐I and neurofilament‐M). Seven DSs and four transitional stages were defined from ED2 to ED12, when the basic OT cortical organization is established, along a spatial developmental gradient axis extending between a zone of maximal and a zone of minimal development. The table of DSs reveals that DSs do not only progress as a function of time but also display a spatially organized propagation along the developmental gradient axis. The complex and dynamic character of the OT development is documented by the fact that several DSs are simultaneously present at any ED or any embryonic stage. The table of DSs allows interpreting how developmental cell behaviors are temporally and spatially organized and explains how different DSs appear as a function of both time and space.
