Some aspects of proliferation (the number of DNA synthesizing cells) and differentiation of forebrain (telencephalon) isolated from a 14.5 day old rat embryo and then transplanted into the testis of syngenetic animals were studied for 90 days. The embryonic cells proliferated for 12 days then their differentiation started and many types of differentiated neuronal and glial cells of the definitive brain were found in the transplant. Histological structure of the transplant was without cytoarchitecture of cerebral cortex. The comparison of the obtained data and literature allows us to make a conclusion that realization of morphogenetic potencies of the rat forebrain anlage are the same not only after transplantation into definitive brain, but after being transplanted into different ectopic places; including testis.  相似文献

The adrenal gland in Rana esculenta complex, as in other advanced anurans, is not yet in its definitive position at the end of the metamorphosis and reaches it subsequently, before sexual maturity. The displacement takes place by various means, among which active cellular movements prevail. These are demonstrated by the presence of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in noninnervated cells (embryonic AChE). The disintegration of the connective tissues which delimit the cords of the adrenal gland, the passive transport of cells by the blood vessels and the movements of adjacent renal and mesenchymal cells collaborate with the active movements of the adrenal cells.  相似文献

Experimental analysis of the mechanisms of somite morphogenesis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Earlier studies have suggested influences on somite morphogenesis by “somite-forming centers,” primitive streak regression, Hensen's node and notochord, and neural plate. Contradictions among these studies were unresolved.Our experiments resolve these conflicts and reveal roles of the primitive streak and notochord in shearing the prospective somite mesoderm into right and left halves and releasing somite-forming capabilities already present. The neural plate appears to be the principal inductor of somites.Embryo fragments containing no somite-forming centers, node, notochord, or streak nevertheless formed somites within 10 hr. Such somites disperse within the next 14–24 hr, which may explain why others failed to see them. In these fragments, an incision alongside the streak substitutes for streak regression in releasing somite formation. All such somites form simultaneously rather than in the normal anteroposterior progression. These fragments contain neural plate, but not notochord. We believe that physical attachment of somites to notochord in normal embryos stabilizes them and prevents dispersal.Pieces of epiblast were rotated 180° putting neural plate over lateral plate mesoderm regions. Somites were induced from the lateral plate by the displaced neural plate region. This is additional evidence of the powerful ability of neuroepithelium to induce somites.  相似文献

In a series of three experiments during March-October, 1998, two species of captive-bred poison dart frogs (Dendrobates tinctorius and D. auratus) were exposed to Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, a recently-described chytridiomycete fungus (chytrid) that was originally isolated from a blue poison dart frog (D. azureus). All frogs exposed to the chytrids developed a fatal skin disease, whereas none of the control frogs developed skin lesions. The most consistent clinical sign in chytrid-exposed frogs was excessive shedding of skin. Gross lesions were subtle, usually affected the legs and ventrum, and consisted of mild skin thickening and discoloration. Microscopic examination of shed skin pieces and/or skin imprints demonstrated the presence of chytrids and was used for ante mortem and post mortem confirmation of chytrid infection. Histologically, there was epidermal hyperkeratosis, hyperplasia, and hypertrophy associated with low to moderate numbers of chytrids in the keratinized layers. These experiments demonstrated that Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis can be a fatal pathogen in poison dart frogs. The experimentally-induced disease in these frogs resembled cases of cutaneous chytridiomycosis that have recently been described in several other species of captive and wild amphibians.  相似文献

Single neurons recorded from the owl's visual Wulst are surprisingly similar to those found in mammalian striate cortex. The receptive fields of Wulst neurons are elaborated, in an apparently hierarchical fashion, from those of their monocular, concentrically organized inputs to produce binocular interneurons with increasingly sophisticated requirements for stimulus orientation, movement and binocular disparity. Output neurons located in the superficial laminae of the Wulst are the most sophisticated of all, with absolute requirements for a combination of stimuli, which include binocular presentation at a particular horizontal binocular disparity, and with no response unless all of the stimulus conditions are satisfied simultaneously. Such neurons have the properties required for 'global stereopsis', including a receptive field size many times larger than their optimal stimulus, which is more closely matched to the receptive fields of the simpler, disparity-selective interneurons. These marked similarities in functional organization between the avian and mammalian systems exist in spite of a number of structural differences which reflect their separate evoluntionary origins. Discussion therefore includes the possibility that there may exist for nervous systems only a very small number of possible solutions, perhaps a unique one, to the problem of stereopsis.  相似文献

In the male silkmoth Antheraea polyphemus, the formation of the side branches of the quadripectinate antennal flagellum was disturbed by an experimental manipulation. Normally the side branches develop in the pupa via deep incisions which proceed from the periphery towards the centerline of the leaf-shaped antennal anlage. Local removal of the uppermost, pigmented cuticular layers of the pupal antennal pocket ('cuticular window') led to a local standstill of branch formation in the manipulated region of the pocket, most probably caused by increased evaporation of water through the remaining layers of meso- and endocuticle. These parts of the antenna retained an unbranched, plate-like shape. This early morphogenetic stage was conserved by the secretion of antennal cuticle. Besides cuticle formation, development of sensilla is not impeded by the manipulation. In the plate-shaped regions, the initial pattern formed by the sensilla in the antennal epidermis is preserved, because they maturate at their birthplaces. In the individual segments, the pattern of sensilla shows a mirror-like symmetry with respect to the segmental midline. From the edge to the midline, we found large s. trichodea, followed by small s. trichodea, s. basiconica, and s. coeloconica on the dorsal side whereas on the ventral side, there are only large s. trichodea and s. campaniformia. We conclude that the development of the featherlike antennal shape on the one hand and the development of sensilla and cuticle on the other hand are independent processes.  相似文献

Morphogenesis of the rod-shaped Escherichia coli is determined by controlled growth of an exoskeleton made of murein (peptidoglycan). Recent insights in the growth strategy of the stress-bearing murein sacculus has contributed to our understanding of how the required concerted action of murein polymerizing and hydrolyzing enzymes is achieved. The proteins involved are coordinated by the formation of multienzyme complexes. In this review, we summarize the recent results on murein structure and metabolism. On the basis of these findings, we present a model that explains maintenance of the specific rod shape of E. coli.  相似文献

Here we review cases where initiation of morphogenesis, including the differentiation of specialized cells and tissues, has clearly evolved due to cyclical symbiont integration. For reasons of space, our examples are drawn chiefly from the plant, fungal and bacterial kingdoms. Partners live in symbioses and show unique morphological specializations that result when they directly and cyclically interact. We include here brief citations to relevant literature where plant, bacterial or fungal partners alternate independent with entirely integrated living. The independent, or at least physically unassociated stages, are correlated with the appearance of distinctive morphologies that can be traced to the simultaneous presence and strong interaction of the plant with individuals that represent different taxa.  相似文献

The relation between the nutrition of the shoot apex and itsmorphogenetic activity is discussed with special reference tothe ferns. From an early stage in the individual developmentthe distal region of the shoot is dependent on supplies of nutrients(the term is used in a comprehensive sense) passed up from thebasal absorptive region. The obconical enlargement of the shootis attended by an increase in the size of the apical and sub-apicalregions; but whereas the primary morphogenetic activities ofthe apical region are closely comparable in small and largeapices, very pronounced differences in leaf shape and size andin stelar morphology may be induced according to the nutritionalstatus of the sub-apical regions. Large apices, which normallyyield large and complex leaves and an elaborate vascular system,can, by appropriate treatments, be caused to yield 'juvenile'leaves and a simple vascular system. The nutritional statusof the sub-apical regions is thus seen to be of considerableinterest and importance in studies of morphogenesis. A conceptionof the mode of distribution of nutrients in the shoot apex isdescribed and discussed. The need for physiological investigationsof the apex is emphasized and the scope for new work using themethods of tissue culture is indicated by reference to recentpublished work.  相似文献

Epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) have been implicated in the control of migration in the telencephalon, but the mechanism underlying their contribution is unclear. We show that expression of a threshold level of EGFRs confers chemotactic competence in stem cells, neurons and astrocytes in cortical explants. This level of receptor expression is normally achieved by a subpopulation of cells during mid-embryonic development. Cells that express high levels of EGFR are located in migration pathways, including the tangential pathway to the olfactory bulb via the rostral migratory stream (RMS), the lateral cortical stream (LCS) leading to ventrolateral cortex and the radial pathway from proliferative zones to cortical plate. The targets of these pathways express the ligands HB-EGF and/or TGFalpha. To test the idea that EGFRs mediate chemotactic migration these pathways, we increased the size of the population of cells expressing threshold levels of EGFRs in vivo by viral transduction. Our results suggest that EGFRs mediate migration radially to the cortical plate and ventrolaterally in the LCS, but not tangentially in the RMS. Within the bulb, however, EGFRs also mediate radial migration. Our findings suggest that developmental changes in EGFR expression, together with changes in ligand expression regulate the migration of specific populations of cells in the telencephalon by a chemoattractive mechanism.  相似文献

Partial structure of the inferior vena cava over the diaphragm carried out experimentally in dogs let to blood stasis in the liver. Biopsy material obtained at different experimental periods demonstrated that fibrosis began to develop from the central and collective veins as a result of proliferation of the fibroblasts of the vein adventitita and "emigration" of the fucsinophilic fibers into the adjacent parenchyma. In parallel there occurred a neoformation of the connective tissue in the areas of hemorrhages and necroses associated with proliferation of the Kupffer's cells. Nutmeg fibrosis proved to have a cellular genesis and as associated with increased tropocollagen activity of fibroblasts.  相似文献

The identification of protein factors, such as epimorphin, scatter factor, and activin, that induce epithelial branching and convergent extension-like movements in embryonic tissues are important breakthroughs in our understanding of the role of mesenchyme in epithelial morphogenesis. Moreover, the development of simple in vitro epithelial cell systems that undergo morphogenesis in response to these factors should provide a means to investigate the cellular and molecular bases of the morphogenetic movements themselves. Although many different cellular processes are involved in such morphogenetic behaviors, cell rearrangement is a particularly intriguing one that will be important to study further. Several considerations lead to the prediction that a dynamic regulation of cell-cell adhesion is likely to play a central role in cell rearrangements and epithelial morphogenesis. Ultimately, a greater issue to be addressed is how the different cellular mechanisms participating in epithelial morphogenesis are coordinated and regulated, so as to generate the diverse patterns found in various epithelia.  相似文献

To reproduce the structural and functional differentiation of human prostatic acini in vivo, prostatic epithelial and stromal cells derived from human primary cultures were cocultured in Matrigel. In the absence of stroma and serum, epithelial spheroids composed of solid masses of stratified and cuboidal cells formed. Outer cells of the spheroid expressed cytokeratins 1, 5, 10, and 14, whereas the inner cells expressed cytokeratin 18. The addition of 2% serum induced formation of a lumen surrounded by a layer of one or two cuboidal and columnar epithelial cells. The further addition of stromal cultures, dihydrotestosterone, and estrogen induced polarization of the epithelium and increased spheroid-forming efficiency. Epithelium expressed either cytokeratin 18 alone or additionally cytokeratins 1, 5, 14, and 10. All spheroid epithelium expressed prostate-specific antigen and prostate-specific membrane antigen. Androgen receptor was only detected in the presence of stroma, serum, and hormones. Thus, development of a functional and morphologically correct prostate gland in vitro is dependent on extracellular matrix, steroid hormones, and factors from stromal cells and serum.  相似文献
