Although the shape of fish scales is useful for determining stock membership, the role of extrinsic (e.g. habitat, food type) and intrinsic (e.g. growth) factors in determining variation in fish scales shape has not been determined. This study examined whether fish scale shape changes as a result of compensatory growth in juveniles of the cyprinid roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.) reared on a fish farm in the UK. This was analyzed using geometric morphometric methods. Sufficient evidence was generated to accept the assumption that food availability and type between different growing-out facilities resulted in compensatory growth and this was sufficient to cause scale shape differences. This was tested using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) analysis with the principal components scores of specimens (PCs) as dependent variables, to investigate whether fish scale shape (where the configuration of landmark coordinates were scaled, translated and rotated) form (where the configuration of landmark coordinates were translated and rotated not scaled) and allometry free (allometrically adjusting scale shape according to length) are related to holding facility (as fixed factor). Cross validated discriminant analysis was used to assess and compare the efficacy of shape, form and allometry free information. Identification rates are much better than chance with allometry free and shape alone, and classification is improved when size is taken into account.  相似文献

We previously identified fs10.1 as a major QTL controlling fruit shape (index of length to width) in an interspecific F2 cross of Capsicum annuum (round fruit) × C. chinense (elongated fruit) in pepper. To more precisely map and characterize the QTL, we constructed near-isogenic lines for fs10.1 and mapped it in a BC4F2 population. In this population, fs10.1 segregated as a Mendelian locus and mapped 0.3 cM away from the closest molecular marker. We further verified the effect of fs10.1 in an F2 population from an independent cross between elongated- and conical-fruited parents. To identify additional allelic variation at fruit shape loci, we screened an EMS-mutagenized population of the blocky-fruited cv. Maor and identified the mutant E-1654 with elongated fruit. This fruit shape mutation was mapped to the fs10.1 region and was determined to be allelic to the QTL. By measuring fruit shape of near-isogenic lines for fs10.1 during fruit development, we found that the shape of the fruit is determined primarily in the first 2 weeks after anthesis. Histological measurements of cell size and cell shape in pericarp sections of fruits of the isogenic lines throughout fruit development indicated that the shape of the fruit is determined primarily by cell shape and that the development of fruit shape is correlated with cell shape.  相似文献

The postnatal ontogenetic patterns and processes that underlie species differences in African ape adult mandibular morphology are not well understood and there is ongoing debate about whether African ape faces and mandibles develop via divergent or parallel trajectories of shape change. Using three-dimensional (3D) morphometric data, we first tested when in postnatal development differences in mandibular shape are initially evident between sister species Pan troglodytes and P. paniscus. Next, we tested whether each species has a distinct and non-parallel trajectory of mandibular development. Mandibles sampled across a broad developmental range of wildshot bonobos (n = 44) and chimpanzees (n = 59) were radiographed and aged from their dental development. We then collected 3D landmark surface data from all the mandibles. A geometric morphometric analysis of size-corrected 3D data found that bonobos and chimpanzees had parallel and linear ontogenetic trajectories of mandibular shape change. In contrast, mandibular shape was statistically different between P. paniscus and P. troglodytes as early as infancy, suggesting that species shape differences are already established near or before birth. A linear and stable trajectory of shape change suggests that mandibular ontogeny in these apes is unimpacted by non-linear variation in tooth developmental timing.  相似文献

Evolutionary shape changes in skull and mandibular anatomy was analysed in 223 specimens of pantherine felids (Neofelis nebulosa, Panthera leo, Panthera onca, Panthera pardus, Panthera tigris, Panthera uncia) compared to a small‐felid outgroup, consisting of 86 specimens of nine different species, using digital surface morphometry on 25 (skull) and 17 (mandible) landmarks. Shape evolution in the pantherine species is complex and nonlinear, and involves both large‐scale and small‐scale shape changes. Shape changes frequently differ among the ingroup species, but the four large Panthera species (leo, onca, pardus, tigris) bear some resemblance to each other. The leopard and jaguar bear the closest resemblance to each other, and several shape changes are common to the lion and tiger, but have probably evolved convergently as a result of large size. The lion has undergone the largest and most numerous shape changes from a small‐felid outgroup. Certain shape changes in the skull and, in some respects, the mandible of the clouded leopard bear resemblance to those in the four large Panthera species. The snow leopard is often regarded as the most primitive of the extant Panthera, and skull and mandibular shape changes often diverge markedly from those observed in the other five ingroup taxa; its overall skull shape is rather similar to the small‐felid outgroup. This indicates that the shape changes in the clouded leopard are convergent with those of the four large Panthera species. Landmark integration showed no significant correlation with molecular phylogeny, chiefly owing to the snow leopard being placed among the four large Panthera species. A traditional phylogenetic topology with the snow leopard as the basal‐most species of Panthera yielded a weak but nonsignificant phylogenetic signal. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 766–778.  相似文献

Asteriscus otolith shapes as well as their morphometry and shape contours were investigated in order to identify four allopatric Alburnus species: A. chalcoides (Güldenstädt, 1772) (Ordu), A. escherichii Steindachner, 1897 (Eski?ehir), Amossulensis Heckel, 1843 (Tunceli), and A. tarichi (Güldenstädt, 1814) (Van) in Turkish inland waters. These were compared using the shape indices (form factor, roundness, circularity, ellipticity, rectangularity and aspect ratio), and the morphological characters [otolith weight (OWE), otolith length (OL), otolith width (OW), otolith perimeter (OP), and otolith area (OA)]. The overall canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) classification score was 93.8%, with the lowest score for A. escherichii (82.5%) and the highest for A. chalcoides (100%). The otolith shapes, morphology and shape contours of all sampled fish were a clear species differentiator, thereby demonstrating that the otolith shape is species‐specific. The current study presents for the first time comprehensive variation information on interspecific left‐right asteriscus otoliths in males and females of each Alburnus species: A. chalcoides from Ordu, A. escherichii from Eski?ehir, A. mossulensis from Tunceli and A. tarichi from Van, based on a total of 307 individuals. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, shape contours and other otolith characters vary within the same genus; these differences should be investigated not only in other freshwater fish species or genera but also in the same species living in different habitats. In addition, further investigation is required not only with respect to the morphometry, biometry, shape, geometry, and shape contours of the otoliths, but also regarding the genetic methods for robust identification of various sympatric and allopatric fish populations.  相似文献

Gillett , Georce W. (Michigan State U., East Lansing.) An experimental study of variation in the Phacelia sericea complex. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(1): 1–7. Illus. 1961.—The Phacelia sericea complex consists of 2 diploid (n = 11), intergrading species, P. idahoensis and P. sericea. The experimental culture of several races of this complex demonstrated that differences in pubescence, leaf shape, and flower shape persist in plants grown in a common environment. Experimental interspecific F1 hybrids demonstrated high fertility; portrayed intermediate expressions of pubescence, leaf shape, and flower shape; and were found to be, in many cases, indistinguishable from many wild intermediates. A study of herbarium specimens revealed numerous intergrades in which pubescence, leaf shape, and flower shape are highly variable, though loosely correlated. The evidence obtained from herbarium specimens, greenhouse cultures, field investigations, chromosome studies, and experimental hybridizations suggests a hybrid origin for the wild intermediates, recognized as Phacelia sericea (Graham) A. Gray subsp. ciliosa (Rydb.) Gillett.  相似文献

This study investigated a rapidly vanishing group of fishes in the genus Characodon (including Characodon lateralis and Characodon audax) from the upper Rio Mezquital drainage in Mexico. Using specimens from museum collections, morphological variation was assessed to quantify body shape differentiation among historic (i.e. extirpated and extant) collection sites. In both sexes, body shape (particularly head shape, the proportion of the caudal peduncle and the position and size of dorsal and anal fins) varied significantly among populations and species. Variation among collection sites could at least partially be attributed to geography, as the presence of distinct hydrographic units and a major waterfall coincided with major body shape differences. These results are discussed in the light of previously published molecular genetic analyses, as they have direct implications for taxonomic problems and the need for conservation measures for these endangered fishes.  相似文献

Fruit shape is a quantitatively inherited character. In tomato, two major loci, sun and ovate, control fruit shape index, which is the ratio of fruit height over width. In this study, we measured many additional fruit shape features in three inter-specific F2 populations using the software application Tomato Analyzer. These populations were derived from varieties carrying elongated fruit but for which the major shape loci differed. We compared the effect of the major fruit shape loci with overall shape, as well as with the distal and proximal end shape features in each population. sun and ovate represented the largest effect on fruit shape in the Howard German and Sausage F2 populations, respectively. The largest effect QTL in the Rio Grande population carrying neither sun nor ovate, were fs8.1 on chromosome 8 and tri2.1/dblk2.1 on chromosome 2. These latter loci were also segregating in the other two populations, thus indicating common regions that control shape across the three populations. The phenotypic analyses showed that sun and ovate contributed to almost all aspects of shape such as the distal and proximal end features. In Rio Grande however, the largest effect QTL did not control all aspects of shape and the distal and proximal features were distinctly controlled in that population. Combined, our results implied that within the cultivated tomato germplasm pool the largest effect on elongated fruit shape was controlled by a combination of the loci sun, ovate, fs8.1 and tri2.1/dblk2.1. A new species of Argulus (Crustacea: Branchiura) is described from a sleeper, Bunaka herwerdeni (Weber), in Papua New Guinea. It is characterised by the shape of the respiratory areas, the number and shape of supporting sclerites in the suckers of the first maxilla, as well as the accessory copulatory structures on the third and fourth legs of the male.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigated the degree of congruence between phylogeny, as inferred from mitochondrial (mt)DNA sequences, and cranium shape variation of crested newts (Triturus cristatus superspecies) in the Balkans. These newts belong to four phylogenetic clades defined by mtDNA analysis, and significantly differed in cranial shape. Allometry explained a high percentage of shape variation in crested newts. The clade‐specific allometric slopes significantly diverged for both the ventral cranium and dorsal cranium, indicating that differences in shape between clades could not be a simple consequence of their difference in size. The analysis of hierarchical and spatial variation showed similarity in the patterns of global and spatially localized hierarchical variation of cranial shape. We also found significant congruence between the pattern of cranial shape variation and molecular phylogeny. The differences in morphology of Triturus dobrogicus in comparison to other crested newt clades, including marked differences in cranium shape, is discussed in the context of the evolution and ecology of crested newts. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 348–360.  相似文献

The evolution of morphological diversity via selection requires that morphological traits display significant heritable genetic variation. In Plethodon salamanders, considerable evidence suggests that head shape evolves in response to selection from interspecific competition, yet the genetic underpinnings of head shape have not been quantitatively examined. Here I used geometric morphometrics and quantitative genetics to assess heritable patterns of head shape variation from hatchling salamanders in two Plethodon species (P. cinereus and P. nettingi). Head shape differed significantly between species and among clutches within species, suggesting that a sizeable proportion of head shape variation was the result of clutch effects. Further, using a full-sib animal model and restricted maximum likelihood (REML), I identified large values of maximal additive heritability for all study localities ($ h_{\max }^{2} > 0.65 $ h_{\max }^{2} > 0.65 ), revealing that Plethodon exhibit considerable heritable genetic variation for head shape. Comparisons of the components of heritable shape variation showed that the magnitude of shape heritability (hmax2 h_{\max }^{2} ) did not differ among localities or species. Therefore, the potential microevolutionary shape change displayed by the two species would be similar if they were exposed to comparable selective forces. However, the direction of maximal shape heritability in morphospace differed between P. cinereus and P. nettingi, indicating that potential evolutionary shape change along these heritability trajectories would diverge between the two species. This finding implies that distinct head shapes could evolve in the two species, even if subjected to the same selection pressure. When combined with previous knowledge of patterns of head shape variation among species and ecological selection on head shape, these findings suggest that microevolutionary and macroevolutionary trends of morphological diversification in Plethodon may be explained as a result of the interaction between ecological selection and underlying patterns of genetic covariance for this multi-dimensional trait.  相似文献

A parametric study to investigate the compressive and the shear stress distributions for various edge shapes created during penetrating keratoplasty (PK) using femtosecond laser is reported. The finite element analysis has been implemented using ABAQUS to study the cornea with various edge shapes, namely the standard edge shape, the zigzag edge shape, the top hat edge shape and the mushroom edge shape for PK. The ratio of maximum compressive stress to maximum shear stress is used as the main factor to assess the relative merits of wound healing rate for different edge shapes. For the typical values of tissue mechanical properties, the zigzag edge shape has the highest ratio of maximum compressive stress to maximum shear stress (11.1 in the xy-direction and 3.7 in the yz-direction), followed by the mushroom edge shape (7.7 in the xy-direction and 3.2 in the yz-direction). The ratios for the top hat and the standard edge shapes are even lower in both directions. A sensitivity analysis of the model has been done to demonstrate that the zigzag edge shape always results in the highest ratios of stresses regardless of the difference in the tissue mechanical properties. The zigzag edge shape also gives the lowest dioptric power D = 45.4. The present results imply that the zigzag edge shape provides the best wound healing rate and optical outcome among the four edge shapes models for PK.  相似文献

The upper ankle joint forms a single articular plane between organism and the foot and substrate. Singular warp analysis shows that its shape reflects substrate use. This study explores whether the differences in shape are genetic with a developmental trajectory evident during ontogeny or epigenetic and the result of substrate use by the individual. A total of 418 matched distal tibial and proximal talar landmarked surfaces from adult and subadult specimens from 12 diverse catarrhine taxa were studied. Specimens were grouped by molar eruption (M1, M2, and M3) for comparative analysis. Generalized Procrustes analysis, multivariate regression, relative warp analysis, singular warp analysis, and permutation tests were used. Singular warp analysis for the entire cohort was highly significant in the first singular warp, with the adult taxa sorting by substrate use. All 173 subadults clustered with an adult “arboreal” shape profile. Among Hominoidea, adults (M3) sorted by substrate use with Pan paniscus and Hylobatidae assuming an “arboreal” shape separate from Pan troglodytes and the remaining taxa with “terrestrial” shape. Cercopithecoid adults sorted by substrate use as well, with the M3 specimens of Papio hamadryas and Macaca thibetana demonstrating a “terrestrial” shape. Differences in mode of locomotion did not affect the findings in the first singular warp. Results confirmed the convergence of talo‐crural shape among superfamilies based on substrate use and divergence in shape within Pan and Macaca, based on substrate use. The shape differences among adults (M3) are consistent with a plastic response to the behavioral stimulus of substrate use. This paper describes a series of four programmes for the PC based on ellipsoidal representations of macromolecular shape in solution using Universal shape functions. ELLIPS1 is based on simple ellipsoid of revolution models (where two of the three axes of the ellipsoid are fixed equal to each other). If the user types in a value for a shape function from sedimentation or other types of hydrodynamic measurement, it will return a value for the axial ratio of the ellipsoid. ELLIPS2 is based on the more general triaxial ellipsoid with the removal of the restriction of two equal axes. The user enters the three semi-axial dimensions of the molecule or the equivalent two axial ratios and ELLIPS2 returns the value of all the hydrodynamic shape functions. It also works of course for ellipsoids of revolution. ELLIPS3 and ELLIPS4 do the reverse of ELLIPS2, that is they both provide a method for the unique evaluation of the triaxial dimensions or axial ratios of a macromolecule (and without having to guess a value for the so-called „hydration”) after entering at least three pieces of hydrodynamic information: ELLIPS3 requires EITHER the intrinsic viscosity with the second virial coefficient (from sedimentation equilibrium, light scattering or osmometry) and the radius of gyration (from light or x-ray scattering) OR the intrinsic viscosity with the concentration dependence term for the sedimentation coefficient and the (harmonic mean) rotational relaxation time from fluorescence depolarisation measurements. ELLIPS4 evaluates the tri-axial shape of a macromolecule from electro-optic decay based Universal shape functions using another Universal shape function as a constraint in the extraction of the decay constants. We studied the morphological diversity and analyzed the small subunit rDNA sequences of two taxa formerly known as Euglena spirogyra Ehr. and Euglena fusca (Klebs) Lemmermann. Our studies confirmed that the two should have the rank of a species, namely Lepocinclis spirogyroides (Ehr.) Marin et Melkonian and Lepocinclis fusca (Klebs) Kosmala et Zakry? comb. nov. (Euglenophyceae). We are defining new diagnostic features for these species, namely the size and the shape of the cells and the shape of the papillae, as well as designating epitypes for them.  相似文献

The helical cell shape of Helicobacter pylori is highly conserved and contributes to its ability to swim through and colonize the viscous gastric mucus layer. A multi‐faceted peptidoglycan (PG) modification programme involving four recently characterized peptidases and two accessory proteins is essential for maintaining H. pylori's helicity. To expedite identification of additional shape‐determining genes, we employed flow cytometry with fluorescence‐activated cell sorting (FACS) to enrich a transposon library for bacterial cells with altered light scattering profiles that correlate with perturbed cell morphology. After a single round of sorting, 15% of our clones exhibited a stable cell shape defect, reflecting 37‐fold enrichment. Sorted clones with straight rod morphology contained insertions in known PG peptidases, as well as an insertion in csd6, which we demonstrated has ld ‐carboxypeptidase activity and cleaves monomeric tetrapeptides in the PG sacculus, yielding tripeptides. Other mutants had only slight changes in helicity due to insertions in genes encoding MviN/MurJ, a protein possibly involved in initiating PG synthesis, and the hypothetical protein HPG27_782. Our findings demonstrate FACS robustly detects perturbations of bacterial cell shape and identify additional PG peptide modifications associated with helical cell shape in H. pylori.  相似文献

Gyrodactylus quadratidigitus n. sp. (Monogenea, Gyrodactylidae) is described from the gills, fins and skin of Thorogobius ephippiatus (Lowe) (leopard-spotted goby) from Portland Castle Bay, Dorset, UK. G. quadratidigitus n. sp. most closely resembles the species ofGyrodactyluspreviously described by Geets from Pomatoschistus microps(Krøyer) in the approximate shape and size of the attachment hooks but can be readily distinguished from other species of the genus by the distinctive square shape of the toe region of the marginal hook sickle, the anteriorly positioned cirrus bulb and the unusually short intestinal crura which extend only as far as the level of the testes.  相似文献

Objective: The ability of young women (n = 132, average age 17 years) to recall body size and age at menarche was examined. The use of body silhouettes to assist women in recalling their body size at menarche and to represent their current body size was also evaluated. Research Methods and Procedures: Subjects, who previously participated in a cohort study, were asked to recall height and weight at the time of menarche, to select body silhouettes that best reflected their body shape at the time of menarche and their current body shape, and to recall age at menarche. Two sets of body silhouettes were developed, one representative of an adult body shape and another representative of an adolescent body shape. Results: Pearson correlation coefficients between the adult and adolescent body figures and actual body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) at the time of menarche were not significantly different (r = 0.82 for adult figures vs. r = 0.72 for adolescent figures, p > 0.05). The correlation between actual BMI at the time of menarche and body silhouette (r = 0.77, all subjects) was similar to the correlation between actual and recalled BMI at the time of menarche (r = 0.83) as well as the correlation between current BMI and current body silhouette (r = 0.75). Recalled and actual ages at menarche were highly correlated (r = 0.83). Discussion: The recall of body shape was considered to be a less precise measure of body size than asking about height and weight, but use of body silhouettes may offer advantages in certain situations.  相似文献
