Epidermal ridge minutiae have been utilized widely in Forensic Sciences for personal identification for a long time; but genetical significance of minutiae is yet to be understood thoroughly. In the present communication an attempt has been made to study the genetical aspects of finger ridge minutiae on the basis of family material. Data for the present study were collected from 76 families belonging to the Namasudras, a Scheduled Caste residing in Nadia district, West Bengal, India. An eight-fold classification of minutiae was followed in the present study. Out of eight minutiae types ridge end and connecting ridge have shown the maximum and minimum occurrences, respectively. Bilateral difference in minutia types was not evident but the sex difference was found to be significant. The genetics of minutia types was studied by familial correlation (r) and heritability (h 2) estimates. Statistically significant familial correlation values and high heritability estimates for some of the minutia types such as fork, ridge end and total minutiae are suggestive of hereditary control of minutiae. The results of the present study suggest that minutiae showing significant correlation values and high heritability estimates (more than 60%) are useful in genetical studies and perhaps diagnosis of some genetical disorders in addition to their regular application in personal identification.  相似文献

The total minutia count (TMC) and fork index (FI), i.e., the proportion of forks in total minutiae, were examined in palm prints of 20 pairs each of monozygotic and dizygotic Japanese twins. No bilateral difference was found in either trait. The mean of the TMC was higher in males than in females, but the FI showed no sex difference. Both traits presented relatively high intraclass correlation coefficients between monozygotic twins, and genetic control of these traits is suggested. However, no correlation was observed between these two traits. A slight correlation was observed between the TMC and the total palmar interdigital ridge count. Some methodological problems concerned with classification criteria were discussed.  相似文献

This paper aims to clarify an expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and cytokeratin 10 and/or 11 in relation to primary and secondary epidermal ridge formation of the human fetus. Firstly, scanning electron microscopy revealed heterogeneity in basal cell morphology during epidermal ridge formation. Basal cells had a uniform, smooth, and polygonal dermal surface until formation of the primary epidermal ridges. Thereafter, the dermal surface became ruffled and elliptic except at the primary epidermal ridges. Secondly, EGFR was detected by monoclonal antibody and autoradiography using 125I-EGF. The antibody reacted with primary epidermal ridge, stratum basale, stratum intermedium, and outer layer of sweat duct. The reactivity became stronger at the primary epidermal ridge than at the secondary one. The binding of 125I-EGF was concentrated in the primary epidermal ridge and sweat duct. Thirdly, cytokeratin 10 and/or 11, a maturation marker of keratinocytes, was detected by monoclonal antibody. The antibody reacted only with the stratum intermedium before secondary epidermal ridge formation. Afterward, it also reacted with the stratum basale of the secondary epidermal ridge but never reacted with that of primary epidermal ridge. The results indicate that basal cells of the secondary epidermal ridge enter the maturation process and suggest a localization of epidermal stem cells on the primary epidermal ridges. Concerning epidermal ridge formation, we suppose that the formation of the primary epidermal ridge causes the segregation of the epidermal stem cells, and that the increased density of the basal cells between the two primary epidermal ridges brings about the change in their dermal surface shape and the formation of the secondary epidermal ridge.  相似文献

In fibroblasts, the G protein alpha subunits Galpha(12) and Galpha(13) stimulate Rho-dependent stress fiber formation and focal adhesion assembly, whereas G protein betagamma subunits instead exert a disruptive influence. We show here that the latter can, however, stimulate the formation of stress fibers and focal adhesions in epithelial-like HeLa cells. Transient expression of beta(1) with gamma(2), gamma(5), gamma(7), and gamma(12) in quiescent HeLa cells induced stress fiber formation and focal adhesion assembly as did expression of the constitutively active Galpha(12). Co-expression of betagamma with Galpha(i2) and the C-terminal fragment of the beta-adrenergic receptor kinase, both of which are known to bind and sequester free betagamma, blocked betagamma-induced stress fiber and focal adhesion formation. Inhibition was also noted with co-expression of a dominant negative mutant of Rho. Botulinum C3 exoenzyme, which ADP-ribosylates and inactivates Rho, and a Rho-associated protein kinase inhibitor, Y-27632, similarly inhibited betagamma-induced stress fiber and focal adhesion assembly. These results indicate that G protein betagamma subunits regulate Rho-dependent actin polymerization in HeLa cells.  相似文献

Morphogenesis of the anterior metatarsal skin (scutate scale region), from 9.5 to 12 days of development, results in the formation of orderly patterned scale ridges. It is after the initial formation of the Definitive Scale Ridge that the characteristic outer and inner epidermal surfaces differentiate. The hard, plate-like beta stratum, with its unique beta keratins, characterizes the epidermis of the outer surface, while the epidermis of the inner surface elaborates an alpha stratum. The anterior metatarsal region of the scaleless mutant does not undergo scale morphogenesis. Therefore, scale ridges do not form nor do the outer and inner epidermal surfaces with their characteristic beta and alpha strata. We have found that the extracellular matrix molecule, tenascin, first appears in the scutate scale dermis at 12 days of development when the scale ridge is established. Tenascin is found in the dermis only under the scale ridge and is not associated with the dermal-epidermal junction. Tenascin is not found in scaleless anterior metatarsal dermis at this time. As outgrowth of the Definitive Scale Ridge takes place, tenascin distribution correlates closely with the formation of the outer epidermal surface of each scale ridge. By 16 days of development tenascin is also found in close association with the dermal-epidermal junction. Tenascin does not appear in scaleless anterior metatarsal dermis until 16 days of development and then it is randomly and sparsely distributed at the dermal-epidermal junction. Tenascin's initial appearance and pattern of distribution in the scutate scale dermis and its abnormal expression in the scaleless dermis suggest that morphogenesis plays a significant role in regulation of its expression.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of the hobo transposon and Dm412 retrotransposon hybridization sites on the salivary gland polytene chromosomes from larvae of the Drosophila melanogaster isogenic strain 51 used to analyze the effect of the transposition of transposable elements (TEs) on selection for quantitative traits was studied. It was shown that no more than half of the Dm412 hybridization sites were retained 15 years after isogenization; the frequency of the Dm412 transposition varied from 2.0 × 10−4 to 8.8 × 10−5 sites per genome for generation depending on whether the appearance of the same hybridization sites in a part of individuals was considered as independent events or as the manifestation of the appearing sample heterogeneity. The distribution patterns of hobo hybridization sites in two isofemale strains derived from the isogenic strain 51 differed much more markedly; the number of the hobo sites in one of the derivative strains was threefold smaller than in the other one and only some of the sites were common. Within each derivative strain, the TE distribution was uniform, which suggests that inbreeding had no effect on Dm412 activity in this strain. The rates of change in the distribution patterns of various TE in the strain 51 corresponded to their spontaneous transposition rates. Since the isogenic strain accumulates polymorphism in the TE distribution without selection, the TEs are more likely to be the markers of selection events rather than their inducers. Thus, when studying the effects of various environmental factors on TE transposition even in isogenic strains, it is necessary to perform additional close inbreeding to reduce the potential polymorphism.  相似文献

Plant abundances and demography often vary along gradients of environmental stress, and neighboring plants can amplify or diminish such variation. We asked to what degree the effects of neighboring plants on a focal species can be explained by the traits and abundances of species in the surrounding community. We studied a common understory herb, Trientalis latifolia, across climatic gradients created by topography in the Siskiyou Mountains, southwestern Oregon. We compared Trientalis fitness along these gradients with and without neighbor removal, and asked whether the effects of neighboring plants could be predicted by their community‐weighted trait values and abundances. Environmental conditions alone did not explain whether neighbors had competitive or facilitative effects on Trientalis. However, the environment interacted with neighbor traits and biomass to influence neighbor effects: at cool, higher elevations, high neighbor biomass was associated with stronger facilitative effects, while at warm, lower elevations, high neighbor dissimilarity from Trientalis was associated with stronger competitive effects. We suggest that covariation and interactions among environmental and community characteristics are key to understanding species performance along climatic gradients.  相似文献

The quantum efficiency for the formation of M(412), an intermediate product in the photoconversion of the purple membrane protein of Halobacterium halobium, was determined to be 0.30 +/- 0.03 at -40 degrees C. This photochemical reaction was photoreversible to the original pigment and the ratio of the quantum efficiencies gamma PM(568 leads to M(412)/gamma M(412) leads to PM(568) was 0.39 +/- 0.02. No change was seen in either value when exciton interaction between chromophores was eliminated. The sum of gamma PM(568) leads to M(412) plus gamma M(412) leads to PM(568) was 1.07 +/- 0.10, approximately 1, suggesting that the pigment and its primary photoproduct share a common excited state.  相似文献

The discovery of hydrothermal vents along the Galapagos Rift in 1977 opened up one of the most dynamic and productive research themes in marine biology. In the intervening 25 years, hydrothermal vent faunas have been described from the eastern, northeastern and western Pacific, the mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Indian Ocean in the region of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. In addition, there is evidence of hydrothermal signals from the Gakkel Ridge in the Arctic, the central and southwest Indian Ridges and the Scotia Arc in Antarctica. Although often perceived as a continuous linear structure, there are many discontinuities that have given rise to separate biogeographic provinces. In addition, the intervening 25 years have seen a massive increase in our understanding of the biological processes at hydrothermal vents. However, how vents are maintained, and how new vents are colonised has been relatively poorly understood until recently. This review addresses the known larval development of vent-endemic invertebrates. The distribution of larvae in relation to the hydrothermal plume, and the ocean ridge in general, are discussed and the experimental evidence of larval longevity and transport are discussed using such variables as gene flow and larval development rates. The concept of larval dispersal along the mid-ocean ridge is discussed in relation to dispersal barriers and relates the known biogeography of hydrothermal vent systems to both local and evolutionary processes.  相似文献

The pitchers of the tropical carnivorous plant Nepenthes alata are highly specialized organs for the attraction and capture of insects and absorption of nutrients from them. This study examined the structure and development of these pitchers, with particular focus on the nectaries and digestive glands. Immature pitchers developed at the tips of tendrils and were tightly sealed by a lid structure that opened during the end of pitcher elongation. Opened pitchers exposed a ridged peristome containing large nectaries. Like other members of the genus, a thick coating of epicuticular waxy scales covered the upper one-third of the pitcher. Scattered within this zone were cells resembling a stomatal complex with a protruding ridge. Cross sections showed that this ridge was formed by asymmetric divisions of the epidermal cells and lacked an underlying pore. The basal region of the trap had large multicellular glands that developed from single epidermal cells. These glands were closely associated with underlying vascular traces and provided a mechanism for supplying fluid to closed immature pitchers.  相似文献

The role of mutations in evolution depends upon the distribution of their effects on fitness. This distribution is likely to depend on the environment. Indeed genotype‐by‐environment interactions are key for the process of local adaptation and ecological specialization. An important trait in bacterial evolution is antibiotic resistance, which presents a clear case of change in the direction of selection between environments with and without antibiotics. Here, we study the distribution of fitness effects of mutations, conferring antibiotic resistance to Escherichia coli, in benign and stressful environments without drugs. We interpret the distributions in the light of a fitness landscape model that assumes a single fitness peak. We find that mutation effects (s) are well described by a shifted gamma distribution, with a shift parameter that reflects the distance to the fitness peak and varies across environments. Consistent with the theoretical predictions of Fisher's geometrical model, with a Gaussian relationship between phenotype and fitness, we find that the main effect of stress is to increase the variance in s. Our findings are in agreement with the results of a recent meta‐analysis, which suggest that a simple fitness landscape model may capture the variation of mutation effects across species and environments.  相似文献

最近邻体法是一类有效的植物空间分布格局分析方法,邻体距离的概率分布模型用于描述邻体距离的统计特征,属于常用的最近邻体法之一。然而,聚集分布格局中邻体距离(个体到个体)的概率分布模型表达式复杂,参数估计的计算量大。根据该模型期望和方差的特性,提出了一种简化的参数估计方法,并利用遗传算法来实现参数优化,结果表明遗传算法可以有效地估计的该模型的两个参数。同时,利用该模型拟合了加拿大南温哥华岛3个寒温带树种的空间分布数据,结果显示:该概率分布模型可以很好地拟合美国花旗松(P.menziesii)和西部铁杉(T.heterophylla)的邻体距离分布,但由于西北红柏(T.plicata)存在高度聚集的团簇分布,拟合结果不理想;美国花旗松在样地中近似随机分布,空间聚集参数对空间尺度的依赖性不强,但西北红柏和西部铁杉空间聚集参数具有尺度依赖性,随邻体距离阶数增加而变大。最后,讨论了该模型以及参数估计方法的优势和限制。  相似文献

Latent print examiners use their expertise to determine whether the information present in a comparison of two fingerprints (or palmprints) is sufficient to conclude that the prints were from the same source (individualization). When fingerprint evidence is presented in court, it is the examiner''s determination—not an objective metric—that is presented. This study was designed to ascertain the factors that explain examiners'' determinations of sufficiency for individualization. Volunteer latent print examiners (n = 170) were each assigned 22 pairs of latent and exemplar prints for examination, and annotated features, correspondence of features, and clarity. The 320 image pairs were selected specifically to control clarity and quantity of features. The predominant factor differentiating annotations associated with individualization and inconclusive determinations is the count of corresponding minutiae; other factors such as clarity provided minimal additional discriminative value. Examiners'' counts of corresponding minutiae were strongly associated with their own determinations; however, due to substantial variation of both annotations and determinations among examiners, one examiner''s annotation and determination on a given comparison is a relatively weak predictor of whether another examiner would individualize. The extensive variability in annotations also means that we must treat any individual examiner''s minutia counts as interpretations of the (unknowable) information content of the prints: saying “the prints had N corresponding minutiae marked” is not the same as “the prints had N corresponding minutiae.” More consistency in annotations, which could be achieved through standardization and training, should lead to process improvements and provide greater transparency in casework.  相似文献

Researchers have demonstrated the neighbor effect for affiliative and agonistic neighbor vocalizations in captive chimpanzees. We extend the investigation of the neighbor effect to New World monkeys, Callithrix jacchus. We collected data on vocalizations and behaviors of 31 focal individuals and concurrent neighbor vocalization within three behavioral categories: intragroup and intergroup aggression and intragroup affiliation. We investigated whether there was an influence of neighbor vocalizations on focal behavior within the same behavioral category. For data analysis we used approximate randomization of paired‐sample t‐tests. We found that marmosets performed intergroup aggressive behavior (bristle, anogenital present for neighbor loud shrill only) for significantly longer, and emitted significantly more intergroup agonistic vocalizations (twitter, loud shrill), at a high frequency of intergroup agonistic neighbor vocalizations (twitter, loud shrill) than at low. The marmosets were also significantly more likely to engage in bristle behavior immediately after hearing a neighbor intergroup aggressive call (twitter, loud shrill) than directly beforehand. High neighbor intragroup agonistic calls (chatter) were associated with significantly longer spent in related behavior (composite of: attack, chase, steal food). Affiliative behaviors (share food, grooming invite) were engaged in by marmosets for significantly longer at higher frequencies of affiliative neighbor chirp calls than at low. Marmosets were also significantly more likely to perform food sharing and active affiliative contact immediately after rather than before hearing a neighbor chirp call. Our findings suggest that neighbor vocalizations influence marmoset behavior through social contagion and indicate that the neighbor effect for affiliation and aggression generalizes to the marmoset. The one-dimensional Ising model, with nearest neighbor correlation only, suitably modified, is used to explain the observed linear dependence of melting temperature of copolymeric DNA with GC content. Transition curves are plotted for regular, random, and Markoff distribution of base pairs for various values of a correlation parameter U between nearest neighbor bonds. Exact analytic formulas are given for fraction of bonds intact at a particular temperature for various regular distributions for all U and approximate ones for random and Markoff distributions for small U. A scheme is indicated for further improvement. The model, in principle, makes it possible to estimate the statistical distribution of base pairs from the detailed shape of the transition curve.  相似文献

Fingerprint, as one of the most popular and robust biometric traits, can be used in automatic identification and verification systems to identify individuals. Fingerprint matching is a vital and challenging issue in fingerprint recognition systems. Most fingerprint matching algorithms are minutiae-based. The minutiae points are the ways that the fingerprint ridges can be discontinuous. Ridge ending and ridge bifurcation are two frequently used minutiae in most fingerprint matching algorithms. This article presents a new minutiae-based fingerprint matching using the onion peeling approach. In the proposed method, fingerprints are aligned to find the matched minutiae points. Then, the nested convex polygons of matched minutiae points are constructed and the comparison between peer-to-peer polygons is performed by the turning function distance. Simplicity, accuracy, and low time complexity of the onion peeling approach are three important factors that make it a standard method for fingerprint matching purposes. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated on the database FVC2002. Since the fingerprints that the difference between the number of their layers is more than 2 and the a minutiae matching score lower than 0.15 are ignored, better results are obtained.KeywordsFingerprint Matching, Minutiae, Convex Layers, Turning Function, Computational Geometry.  相似文献

The ultrastructure, morphology, and histology of somatic embryogenesis in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) were examined using light and electron microscopic techniques. Somatic embryogenesis was initiated from zygotic embryo explants cultured 8 d after pollination. Formation of a ridge of tissue began 3–4 d after culture (DAC) by divisions in the epidermal and subepidermal cells of the scutellum. Ridge formation was accompanied by a decrease in vacuoles, lipid bodies, and cell size, and an increase in endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Proembryonic cell masses (proembryoids) formed from the scutellar ridge by 10 DAC. Proembryoid cells had abundant Golgi bodies and ER while the amounts of lipids and starch varied. Somatic embryos developed from the proembryonic masses 13 DAC and by 21 DAC had all the parts of mature zygotic embryos. Although shoot and root primordia of somatic embryos were always less differentiated than those of zygotic embryos, scutellar cells of somatic and zygotic embryos had similar amounts of lipids, vacuoles, and starch. Somatic scutellar epidermal cells were more vacuolated than their zygotic counterparts. In contrast, somatic scutellar nodal cells were smaller and not as vacuolated as in zygotic embryos. Somatic embryogenesis was characterized by three phases of cell development: first, scutellar cell dedifferentiation with a reduction in lipids and cell and vacuole size; second, proembryoid formation with high levels of ER; and third, the development of somatic embryos that were functionally and morphologically similar to zygotic embryos.  相似文献

The frequency of minutia types was studied in finger prints of 77 males and 82 females. Dermal ridges were clearly printed by a revised method for this purpose. The fork index, which represents the frequency of forks in minutiae, is higher in females for each finger than in males. It differs on each finger, i.e., low on the digit I, high on the digits, III, IV and V, and intermediate on the digit II. The mean of the index for each finger distributes from about 15 to 24. Bilateral difference is not evident. The correlation coefficient between right and left hands ranges from 0.52 to 0.79. Forks appear more frequently in ulnar loops than in whorls. It is revealed that the occurrence of forks differs in dermal regions.  相似文献

Aim To describe patterns of hydrothermal vent community diversity and dispersion at the intersegment scale (> 100 km). Location The area discussed is an approximately 170 km portion of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, a mid‐ocean ridge in the north‐east Pacific Ocean. Methods Samples of benthic invertebrates from hydrothermal vents on three segments of the Juan de Fuca are examined for community characteristics such as diversity, abundance and distribution. Results Species richness (55 species) and evenness are low. If the macrofauna only are considered, species richness is about 30% lower than when meiofauna are also considered. The geometric series describes the species‐abundance distribution. The relationship between vent species’ distribution and abundance is significantly positive (r2 = 0.818; P < 0.001). Alpha diversity is lower in patchy habitat than continuous habitat and gamma diversity is similar for both habitat types. Beta diversity is higher in patchy habitat. Local diversity is linearly related to regional diversity. Main conclusions Species richness is comparable to other highly disturbed systems. The geometric series species abundance model implies some degree of niche pre‐emption in the vent community and is consistent with the suggestion that the geometric series distribution can be found in species‐poor environments that experience harsh conditions and are structured by relatively few environmental factors. Species distribution and abundance are highly correlated. The regional species pool affects local vent diversity. Vent diversity studies should be conducted on at least the ridge scale.  相似文献
