Parenteral feeding is not an adequate substitute for oral feeding. Water and electrolytes can readily be supplied parenterally, but not all necessary nutrients. To provide the 2,000 to 2,500 calories per day needed for adequate energy and to avoid oxidation of protein, concentrations of dextrose as great as 25 per cent with an additional 5 per cent of ethyl alcohol have been used parenterally with success. Fat emulsions have been given intravenously with some success, but undesirable reactions in as many as 16 per cent of patients have been reported. Protein may be given as amino acids in solution with 10 to 15 per cent dextrose. Water-soluble vitamins may be lost through diuresis if administered intravenously; of these vitamin C is necessary to healing of wounds and appears to have special value in reactions to stress. If fat nutrition is impaired, deficiency in fat-soluble vitamins is to be expected; of these, vitamin K is important to production of prothrombin and therefore especially necessary to recovery from operation or injury.  相似文献

Humans are limited in their capacity to convert protein into energy. We present a hypothesis that a “bell” shaped thorax and a wide pelvis evolved in Neandertals, at least in part, as an adaptation to a high protein diet. A high protein diet created a need to house an enlarged liver and urinary system in a wider lower trunk. To test the hypothesis, we applied a model developed to identify points of nutritional stress. A ratio of obligatory dietary fat to total animal fat and protein sourced calories is calculated based on various known and estimated parameters. Stress is identified when the obligatory dietary fat ratio is higher than fat content ratios in available prey. The model predicts that during glacial winters, when carbohydrates weren't available, 74%?85% of Neandertals' caloric intake would have had to come from animal fat. Large animals contain around 50% fat calories, and their fat content is diminished during winter, so a significant stressful dietary fat deficit was identified by the model. This deficit could potentially be ameliorated by an increased capability to convert protein into energy. Given that high protein consumption is associated with larger liver and kidneys in animal models, it appears likely that the enlarged inferior section of the Neandertals thorax and possibly, in part, also his wide pelvis, represented an adaptation to provide encasement for those enlarged organs. Behavioral and evolutionary implications of the hypothesis are also discussed. Am J Phys Anthropol 160:367–378, 2016. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The nutritional effects of high-fat diets have been extensively studied in laboratory animals, but as yet few experiments have examined the feeding response of animals to newly developed fat substitutes. The present study used commercially available no-fat (0% fat, 92% carbohydrate) and high-fat (41% fat, 54% carbohydrate) cake to determine the effects of fat substitutes on food preference and caloric intake in rats. The first experiment showed that nondeprived rats found the high-fat and no-fat cakes equally palatable and highly preferred to lab chow. Food deprived rats, however, preferred the high-fat cake to the no-fat cake, which may be related to its higher caloric density. In the second experiment, rats fed high-fat cake, in addition to chow, for 30 days consumed more calories and gained more weight than did rats fed no-fat cake and chow. The no-fat cake group, however, overate and gained more weight than chow-only controls. The hyperphagic response to the no-fat cake can be attributed to its carbohydrate content, moisture, and high palatability. Thus, removing fat from the cake reduced, but did not eliminate, its obesity-promoting effect. Obviously, low-fat foods must be consumed in moderation if used for weight control.  相似文献

Incorporating concentration dependence in stable isotope mixing models   总被引:20,自引:0,他引:20
Stable isotopes are often used as natural labels to quantify the contributions of multiple sources to a mixture. For example, C and N isotopic signatures can be used to determine the fraction of three food sources in a consumer's diet. The standard dual isotope, three source linear mixing model assumes that the proportional contribution of a source to a mixture is the same for both elements (e.g., C, N). This may be a reasonable assumption if the concentrations are similar among all sources. However, one source is often particularly rich or poor in one element (e.g., N), which logically leads to a proportionate increase or decrease in the contribution of that source to the mixture for that element relative to the other element (e.g., C). We have developed a concentration-weighted linear mixing model, which assumes that for each element, a source's contribution is proportional to the contributed mass times the elemental concentration in that source. The model is outlined for two elements and three sources, but can be generalized to n elements and n+1 sources. Sensitivity analyses for C and N in three sources indicated that varying the N concentration of just one source had large and differing effects on the estimated source contributions of mass, C, and N. The same was true for a case study of bears feeding on salmon, moose, and N-poor plants. In this example, the estimated biomass contribution of salmon from the concentration-weighted model was markedly less than the standard model estimate. Application of the model to a captive feeding study of captive mink fed on salmon, lean beef, and C-rich, N-poor beef fat reproduced very closely the known dietary proportions, whereas the standard model failed to yield a set of positive source proportions. Use of this concentration-weighted model is recommended whenever the elemental concentrations vary substantially among the sources, which may occur in a variety of ecological and geochemical applications of stable isotope analysis. Possible examples besides dietary and food web studies include stable isotope analysis of water sources in soils, plants, or water bodies; geological sources for soils or marine systems; decomposition and soil organic matter dynamics, and tracing animal migration patterns. A spreadsheet for performing the calculations for this model is available at http://www.epa.gov/wed/pages/models.htm.  相似文献

The inhibition of cancer by calorie restriction was discovered over 50 years ago. By 1950 it had been well characterized and there existed sufficient data to propose a mechanism of action. For reasons that remain unclear, but are probably related to the perception of the calorie restricted rodent as "small" and the ad libitum feeding regimen as more "normal," the concept of calorie restriction has been largely ignored by investigators after this time. Hence, despite the fact that calorie restriction is one of the oldest, best-documented, and most effective ways known to reduce cancer risk in rodents, it has had little impact on modern cancer research. In this report the history of calorie restriction is briefly reviewed, and a mechanism of action is proposed that involves increased production of ACTH and decreased production of gonadotrophins. It is further proposed that these changes may come about in part from the restriction of the time during which feeding is permitted as well as from the restriction of food per se. There is renewed interest in calorie restriction due in part to the growing recognition that there are differences in the efficiency of utilization of various sources of energy, in particular that fat calories are utilized more efficiently and provide more usable energy than carbohydrate calories. New data are presented indicating that the apparent enhancement by dietary fat of mammary cancer in rats is really a manifestation of the caloric effect. Further, the effect is abolished by moderate calorie restriction of only 15-20%. The application of these findings to the prevention of cancer in humans is considered.  相似文献

The effect of partial threonine deficiency on protein and calorie utilization and its relation to liver fat accumulation were studied. The retained nitrogen of the threonine deficient group dcreased but the ratio of the caloric intake to the retained nitrogen increased.

The liver fat content of rats fed on the threonine deficient diet decreased with each decrease in their caloric intake.

Present results support the earlier concept of the authors that the fatty liver caused by feeding rats such an amino acid imbalanced diet is due to a disproportionately high intake of calories in relation to the intake of balanced protein.  相似文献

Energy budget of swarming male mosquitoes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract.
  • 1 The objective of this study was to determine, in the field, the energetic costs of swarming for male Anopheles freeborni (Diptera: Culicidae). By comparing the caloric contents of resting males to marked males captured after swarming, we established when sugar feeding takes place, what energy source is used to fuel swarming flight, and how much energy is invested in this activity.
  • 2 Sugar-feeding takes place sometime during the night after swarming is concluded. Nectar sugars are therefore not immediately available to fuel flight. Stored sugars (trehalose and glucose) and glycogen are the primary sources of energy for flight. Lipids are not used to fuel flight but may be used in resting metabolism.
  • 3 Male size is not related to feeding success. For males of all sizes, swarming consumes more than 50% of available calories. Accordingly, the ability of an individual to find and exploit nectar sources will greatly affect reproductive success.

The desire to consume high volumes of fat is thought to originate from an evolutionary pressure to hoard calories, and fat is among the few energy sources that we can store over a longer time period. From an ecological perspective, however, it would be beneficial to detect fat from a distance, before ingesting it. Previous results indicate that humans detect high concentrations of fatty acids by their odor. More important though, would be the ability to detect fat content in real food products. In a series of three sequential experiments, using study populations from different cultures, we demonstrated that individuals are able to reliably detect fat content of food via odors alone. Over all three experiments, results clearly demonstrated that humans were able to detect minute differences between milk samples with varying grades of fat, even when embedded within a milk odor. Moreover, we found no relation between this performance and either BMI or dairy consumption, thereby suggesting that this is not a learned ability or dependent on nutritional traits. We argue that our findings that humans can detect the fat content of food via odors may open up new and innovative future paths towards a general reduction in our fat intake, and future studies should focus on determining the components in milk responsible for this effect.  相似文献

The absolute and relative contents of hydrolysis available calories (HAC), tanninfree HAC (TFHAC) and chemical available calories (CAC) of the detritus during the seasonal decomposition of mangrove (Kandelia candel (L.) Druce) leaf litter in Fujian, China was determined. Defined arbitrarily as the portion of total caloric content in detritus hydrolized with 1 mol/L HC1 for 6 h at 20 ℃, HAC is presumed to be a rough index of potential energy readily utilized by marine detritivores. TFHAC is the remaining calories of HAC devoid of tannin-attributed calories and CAC is defined as the total caloric content derived from raw protein, raw fat and soluble sugar. The results showed that in leaf litter, the seasonal mean caloric contents were 4.06 kJ/g DW or 20.85% of the total caloric content for HAC and 3.23 kJ/g DW or 16.68% of the total caloric content for TFHAC, which decreased to 1.75 kJ/g DW or 9.25% for HAC, and 1. 64 kJ/g DW or 8.20% for TFHAC in the detritus at half-life of decomposition. The difference in contents between HAC and TFHAC diminished as decomposition was progressed. The contents of CAC generally increased during decomposition, always higher than those of HAC and TFHAC, suggesting that some protein and fat in detritus are nonavailable to detritivores since they are hydrolyzed by week acid. The value of detritus HAC per unit ash-free dry weight (AFDW), as determined at the time when the detritus lost 23% of its initial weight, ranged from 16. 16 to 17.41 kJ/g AFDW and increased rapidly to a maximum of 24.00 kJ/g AFDW at 49% dry weight loss of detritus during decomposition. The detritus derived from mangrove fallen leaves had a low available caloric content and an moderate caloric value of HAC as compared with detritus of other marine plants. Finally, the relationship between HAC, TFHAC and CAC was discussed and some points of attention relevant to the application of those indices were given in relation  相似文献

The most rapid growth of the fat body, ovaries and residual body occurred only at the time of maximal feeding, which was the time of highest metabolic rate. Larvae ceased feeding before the next moult and lost weight. Adult females did not cease feeding and never lost weight. Mated females maintained a high feeding rate that corresponded to a constant oviposition rate with no gonotrophic cycles. Virgin females maintained a lower feeding rate and maintained fully mature eggs in a viable state for life.Growth during the last larval stadium was entirely somatic and characterized by a great accumulation of a lipid rich (65%) fat body. Net growth during the first 10 days of adult life was entirely gonodal, because the small amount of residual body growth was matched by the amount of fat body loss. However, since the residual body was 60% protein and the fat body was 60% lipid, some of the somatic protein growth had to come from the diet and some of the fat body lipid went for ovarial growth. The 20% dietary protein was more than sufficient for all somatic and ovarial growth, and some protein was catabolized for energy. The amount of uric acid in larval faeces accounted for almost all protein catabolism, but in adult females half of the catabolized protein nitrogen did not appear in the faeces. With only 5% dietary lipid both larvae and adults had to synthesize additional lipids from carbohydrates to supplement absorbed lipids for growth demands. Almost all absorbed and synthesized lipids were used for somatic growth in the larvae and for ovarial growth in the adults, because the per cent of food calories used for growth greatly exceeded the per cent dry weight of food used for growth. Based on the calories and dry weight of available fuel, almost all energy production was based on carbohydrate oxidation. Some carbohydrate was used for lipid synthesis but very little was used for growth.Probably the absorption efficiency (72%) and growth efficiency (28%) was the same for both the last instar larvae and virgin females because they ate exactly the same food. However, the larval metabolic efficiency (42%) was higher than that of females (37%), which indicated that more of the absorbed food was converted to tissue during larval growth (somatic) than during adult growth (ovarial).Of the dry weight of food eaten during the last larval stadium, 30% was egested, 32% was oxidized, 28% appeared as growth, and 10% was condensed to lipid and became part of the 28% growth. Of the dry weight of food eaten during the first 10 days of adult life, 27% was egested, 41% was oxidized, 25% appeared as growth, and 6% was condensed to lipid.  相似文献

The experiment was conducted to determine the effect of different protein sources on concentration of small peptides (Pro-Ala, Val-Val, Pro-Leu, Met-Met) in the rumen fluid of sheep. Four Inner Mongolia Sunite sheep fitted with permanent cannulas were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design, and fed four different protein sources including soybean meal (SBM), casein (Casein), fish meal (FM) and corn gluten meal (CGM), respectively. The results showed that the concentration of Pro-Ala peaked in Casein, FM, CGM groups at 2 h after feeding, whereas the highest level was measured at 6 h after feeding in SBM group. Val-Val and Pro-Leu production were highest at 6 h after feeding Casein and CGM diets and 4 h after feeding SBM and FM diets, respectively. During 6 h after feeding the accumulative concentration of Pro-Ala (1.74 mg/l) and Pro-Leu (25.78 mg/l) in rumen was highest for the Casein diet. During the total sampling time, the highest amount of accumulated small peptides was measured for Pro-Leu, and lowest amount for Met-Met, which was independent of treatment groups. Experimental results proved that small peptides with N-terminal Pro and a hydrophobic structure could inhibit rumen degradation and may be available for post-ruminal absorption.  相似文献

Recently, a genome-wide association scan was completed in the IRAS (Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study) Family Study (IRASFS) Hispanic-American cohort. Multiple single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the G-protein signaling 6 (RGS6) gene were found to be associated with adiposity phenotypes. RGS6 has shown downstream antagonistic interplay with opioid receptors, targets of fatty/sugary food agonists. The possibility that RGS6 promotes tolerance and tachyphylaxis among the opioid receptor is a plausible pathway for overconsuming fat/sugar-laden food. Therefore, we hypothesized that RGS6 variants are associated with intake of fatty/sugary foods. In 932 Hispanics from San Antonio and San Luis Valley, CO, the following dietary intake variables were assessed using the Block Brief 2000 food frequency questionnaire: total calories, total fat, % calories from fat, % calories from saturated fat, protein, % calories from protein, carbohydrates, % calories from carbohydrates, and daily frequency of servings of fats/oils/sweets. We tested for association between 23 SNPs in RGS6 and dietary intake using a variance components measured genotype approach. All models were adjusted for gender, recruitment site, admixture, BMI, and age. Using an additive genetic model, rs1402064 was associated with higher intake of fats/oils/sweets, total calories, total fat and saturated fat (P = 0.0007, 0.026, 0.023, and 0.024). SNPs rs847330 and rs847354 were associated with higher intake of fats/oils/sweets (P = 0.002 and 0.018), total fat (P = 0.040 and 0.048) and saturated fat (P = 0.044 and 0.041). Finally, rs769148 was associated with higher intake of fats/oils/sweets (P = 0.002). RGS6 is a new candidate gene for adiposity traits that may be associated with a behavioral tendency toward fat-laden food intake.  相似文献

Alcohol feeding (40% of total calories over a period of 9 days) increases microsomal cortisol-5 alpha-reductase activity in rat liver distinctly. It is assumed that this is an adaptive response to an increased release of cortisol caused by alcohol administration. Cortisol-5 alpha-reductase activity is decreased to one third of control values in rats fed an isocaloric, low protein diet. The response to alcohol feeding is susta ined in these animals. Phenobarbital treatment (80 mg/kg x day) stimulates 5 alpha-reduction of cortisol per g of microsomes almost twofold. The activity calculated per total liver increases 4-fold. Alcohol administration has no additional effect on cortisol-5alpha-reductase in phenobarbital-treated rats.  相似文献

In most areas of the world nutritional problems are related to quantitative and qualitative deficiencies. However, in North America the possible harmful effects of overnutrition deserve careful consideration.Little information is available concerning overnutrition during prenatal and neonatal life. The author draws attention to this possibility by outlining clinical and biochemical disorders occurring in the newborn which are related to excessive ingestion of calories, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals before and after birth. Particular reference is made to the ingestion of nutritional substances during pregnancy in amounts that are relatively innocuous to the mother but may be harmful to the infant in utero.Further research in this interesting field is needed in an attempt to assess the effect on the fetus of qualitative overnutrition during pregnancy.  相似文献

To determine the effect of feeding frequency on appetite in normal weight (NW) and obese (OB) prepubertal children, we carried out a prospective, randomized interventional study of 18 NW and 17 OB children ages 6–10. Children received three or five feedings in random order on separate days. Total calories, carbohydrate, protein, and fat composition on each day were equal. Two hours following the last feeding, children were offered ice cream ad lib. The major outcome variable was kilocalories ice cream consumed. A visual analog scale to assess fullness was also administered before consumption of ice cream. We observed that OB children consumed 73.0 ± 37.4 kcal more after five feedings than after three feedings whereas the NW children consumed 47.1 ± 27.8 kcal less. There was significant interaction between meal pattern and weight group indicating that this change in ice cream consumption differed significantly between groups (P = 0.014 by two‐factor analysis). Ice cream intake/kg was less in OB compared to NW subjects (P = 0.012). Fullness ratings before ice cream did not differ by meal pattern or weight group. However, pre‐ice cream fullness predicted ice cream intake in NW but not OB children. In summary, OB and NW children differed in appetite response to meal frequency. Our data suggest that: (i) satiety in OB children is related more to proximity of calories (larger supper) than to antecedent distribution of calories and; (ii) NW children may be more prone to restrict intake based on subjective fullness.  相似文献

Removing cultures from roller tubes before staining eliminates the destaining which often occurs when the cells are first stained and then removed by embedding in collodion. The cells are fixed in situ, dehydrated, and covered with collodion (Merk's flexible) for 10 min. The collodion is poured off, the fluid residue lining the tube allowed to dry for 10 min, and the tube is filled with tap water. The collodion cast containing the cells is loosened and removed, cut into strips, placed on slides and blotted into firm contact. The collodion is then dehydrated and dissolved with absolute alcohol followed by a 1:1 mixture of alcohol and ether. The slides can then be rehydrated and stained by conventional methods.  相似文献

Agricultural and food-industry residues constitute a major proportion (almost 30%) of worldwide agricultural production. These wastes mainly comprise lignocellulosic materials, fruit and vegetable wastes, sugar-industry wastes as well as animal and fisheries refuse and byproducts. Agro-residues are rich in many bioactive and nutraceutical compounds, such as polyphenolics, carotenoids and dietary fiber among others. Agro residues are a major valuable biomass and present potential solutions to problems of animal nutrition and the worldwide supply of protein and calories, if appropriate technologies can be used for their valorization by nutrient enrichment. Technologies available for protein enrichment of these wastes include solid substrate fermentation, ensiling, and high solid or slurry processes. Technologies to be developed for the reprocessing of these wastes need to take account of the peculiarities of individual wastes and the environment in which they are generated, reprocessed, and used. In particular, such technologies need to deliver products that are safe, not just for animal feed use, but also from the perspective of human feeding. This review focuses on the major current applications of solid-state fermentation in relation to the feed sector.  相似文献

In nature, food is often variable in composition and availability. As a consequence, predators may need to seek non‐prey food sources. Some predators are known to feed on nectar when food is limited. Nectar and other carbohydrate resources could also be beneficial when prey are more abundant if it helps predators balance protein‐biased diets. We tested if an actively hunting predator, the jumping spider, Phidippus audax, benefited from liquid carbohydrates when prey were not limited. We also tested if the benefit of carbohydrates varied with the nutrient content of prey (i.e., from protein to lipid biased). Spiders were reared on one of six live prey, Drosophila melanogaster, treatments that ranged from high protein to high lipid. Half of the spiders were given access to a 20% sucrose solution. After 2 months, we measured spider mass, cephalothorax width, instar duration, percent body fat, survival, and estimated number of prey eaten. Spiders reared on high‐protein diets with carbohydrates were larger and heavier than spiders on other treatments. Access to carbohydrates also increased percent body fat and survival across prey treatments. Our results suggest that carbohydrates may be a valuable component of spider diets, especially when prey have high protein and low lipid content as is commonly observed in prey in the field. Our results highlight the importance of diet balancing for predators, and that liquid carbohydrates can be an important nutrient to supplement a diet of prey rather than just being an energy supplement during periods of starvation.  相似文献

The chronic influence of dietary fat composition on obesity and insulin action is not well understood. We examined the effect of amount (20% vs 60% of total calories) and type (saturated vs polyunsaturated) of fat on insulin action and body composition in mature male rats. Six months of feeding a high fat (HF) diet led to obesity and impaired insulin action (determined by a euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp), neither of which were reversed by a subsequent 6 months of feeding a low fat (LF) diet. Within HF fed rats, type of fat did not affect body composition or insulin action. Six months of feeding a low fat diet led to only a slight decline in insulin action, with no difference due to type of dietary fat. From 6–9 months, insulin action became more impaired in LF rats fed the saturated diet than in LF rats fed the polyunsaturated diet. By 12 months, all groups were obese and had a similar impairment in insulin action. The amount and type of fat in the diet did not influence the overall degree of impairment in insulin action but did affect the time course. Both feeding a high fat diet and feeding a low fat saturated diet accelerated the impairment in insulin action relative to rats fed a low fat polyunsaturated fat diet.  相似文献

Nutrient balance is a strong determinant of animal fitness and demography. It is therefore important to understand how the compositions of available foods relate to required balance of nutrients and habitat suitability for animals in the wild. These relationships are, however, complex, particularly for omnivores that often need to compose balanced diets by combining their intake from diverse nutritionally complementary foods. Here we apply geometric models to understand how the nutritional compositions of foods available to an omnivorous member of the order Carnivora, the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos L.), relate to optimal macronutrient intake, and assess the seasonal nutritional constraints on the study population in west-central Alberta, Canada. The models examined the proportion of macronutrients that bears could consume by mixing their diet from food available in each season, and assessed the extent to which bears could consume the ratio of protein to non-protein energy previously demonstrated using captive bears to optimize mass gain. We found that non-selective feeding on ungulate carcasses provided a non-optimal macronutrient balance with surplus protein relative to fat and carbohydrate, reflecting adaptation to an omnivorous lifestyle, and that optimization through feeding selectively on different tissues of ungulate carcasses is unlikely. Bears were, however, able to dilute protein intake to an optimal ratio by mixing their otherwise high-protein diet with carbohydrate-rich fruit. Some individual food items were close to optimally balanced in protein to non-protein energy (e.g. Hedysarum alpinum roots), which may help explain their dietary prevalence. Ants may be consumed particularly as a source of lipids. Overall, our analysis showed that most food available to bears in the study area were high in protein relative to lipid or carbohydrate, suggesting the lack of non-protein energy limits the fitness (e.g. body size and reproduction) and population density of grizzly bears in this ecosystem.  相似文献
