The endemic mycoses traditionally include coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, blastomycosis and paracoccidioidomycosis. Although sporotrichosis and chromomycosis are technically not included among the endemic mycoses, they are frequently diagnosed in Mexico. Most systemic endemic mycoses are a consequence of inhaling the fungi, while subcutaneous mycoses are acquired through the inoculation of vegetable matter or soil containing the organism. Coccidioidomycosis is caused by Coccidioides spp., a dimorphic pathogenic fungus. Approximately 60% of exposures result in asymptomatic infection; in the rest there are protean manifestations that range from a benign syndrome also known as "Valley Fever" to progressive pulmonary or extrapulmonary disease. Histoplasmosis, caused by the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum, is endemic to the Americas. Pulmonary histoplasmosis manifestations are protean, ranging from a brief period of malaise to a severe, prolonged illness. The spectrum of illness in disseminated histoplasmosis ranges from a chronic, intermittent course to an acute and rapidly fatal infection. Paracoccidioidomycosis is a chronic, granulomatous systemic disease caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis that characteristically produces a primary pulmonary infection, often asymptomatic, and then disseminates to form ulcerative granulomata of the oral, nasal and occasionally the gastrointestinal mucosa. Sporotrichosis, caused by Sporothrix schenckii, has diverse clinical manifestations; the most frequent is the lymphocutaneous form. Generally, infection results from inoculation of the fungus through thorns, splinters, scratches and small traumas. Chromomycosis (Chromoblastomycosis) is a slowly progressive cutaneous and subcutaneous mycosis attributed to various saprophyte Hypomycetes fungi. The primary lesion is also thought to develop as a result of percutaneous traumatic inoculation.  相似文献

Paracoccidioidomycosis, caused by the thermodimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, is a human systemic mycosis prevalent in Latin America. Paracoccidioidomycosis affects mainly male rural workers, causing granulomatous lesions in several organs such as the lungs, liver and spleen. The participation of other animal species in the fungus epidemiology is not well understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the infection of free-range domestic pigs by P. brasiliensis. Serum samples from 106 pigs were analyzed by ELISA and the immunodiffusion test, using P. brasiliensis gp43 and exoantigen as antigens, respectively. The overall positivity to gp43 in ELISA was 37.7 %, although no reactivity was observed in the immunodiffusion test and nor was P. brasiliensis detected in tissue samples (spleen, lung, liver and lymph nodes) from slaughtered animals submitted to culture, histopathological examination and PCR analysis. Five pigs seronegative to gp43 were exposed to natural infection by P. brasiliensis, and all animals seroconverted 3 months after exposure. The results suggest that free-range pigs are frequently infected with P. brasiliensis but are resistant to disease development. This is the first report of paracoccidioidomycosis in pigs.  相似文献

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous fungal infection caused by the traumatic implantation of the dimorphic, pathogenic fungus, Sporothrix schenkii. It constitutes the most common subcutaneous fungal infection in the general population in South Africa. Sporotrichosis in South Africa dates back to 1914, when the disease was first diagnosed in the gold mines. Occupational and recreational circumstances of infection are well established, and the environmental requirements for contracting the disease are better understood. Sporotrichosis cases were recorded from 42 suburbs in the greater Pretoria area as well as from 23 towns outside the Pretoria municipal boundary. It occurred in 154 patients with ages ranging from less than 1 year to 90 years old, with males predominating. Females in the area seemed to be at lesser risk, mainly becoming infected through gardening injuries, insect bites or other minor injuries due to outdoor activities. Exposure to possible sources of the fungus, either from recreational or occupational activities in males, was the main determining factor in acquiring the disease. The lymphocutaneous and localized forms of the disease were most often recorded. Our study indicates that, while there is no pronounced seasonal variation, the onset of the disease seemed to be mainly in the cooler and dryer months of the year. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Histoplasmosis is an endemic mycosis caused by the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. Some important manifestations of infection include acute or chronic pulmonary disease, histoplasmomas, progressive disseminated histoplasmosis, and central nervous system infection. Depending on the clinical presentation, site of infection and severity of disease, either amphotericin B preparations followed by itraconazole, or itraconazole alone have become the preferred treatments. Because prolonged therapy (6 weeks to 24 months) may be required, careful monitoring for nephrotoxicity in patients on amphotericin B preparations is necessary. In addition, in patients receiving itraconazole, vigilance for drug interactions and pharmacokinetic properties is warranted. Histoplasma antigen testing has improved rapidity of diagnosis and the ability of long-term monitoring for clinical response in patients with histoplasmosis.  相似文献

Sporotrichosis, a disease caused by the saprophytic, dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii, is currently diagnosed worldwide, especially in some tropical and subtropical areas. The infection usually occurs after traumatic inoculation of soil, plants, and organic matter containing the fungus. Certain activities, such as floriculture, agriculture, mining, and wood exploitation, and zoonotic transmission are associated with the mycosis. In humans, the disease is limited to skin, subcutaneous tissue, and the proximal lymphatic. It occurs commonly as lymphocutaneous or fixed lesions predominantly affect the upper limbs and face, the latter location is frequent in children. However, sporotrichosis in children is uncommonly seen. Data about the disease on this specific group of patients is scanty. The gold standard for diagnosis is culture. Nevertheless, there are other recently added methods (serological, histopathological, and molecular) useful for an accurate diagnosis. Itraconazole is the first choice of treatment for sporotrichosis; however, potassium iodide is also an effective option, mainly in children.  相似文献

White-nose syndrome (WNS) is causing unprecedented declines in several species of North American bats. The characteristic lesions of WNS are caused by the fungus Geomyces destructans, which erodes and replaces the living skin of bats while they hibernate. It is unknown how this infection kills the bats. We review here the unique physiological importance of wings to hibernating bats in relation to the damage caused by G. destructans and propose that mortality is caused by catastrophic disruption of wing-dependent physiological functions. Mechanisms of disease associated with G. destructans seem specific to hibernating bats and are most analogous to disease caused by chytrid fungus in amphibians.  相似文献

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an infection caused by abnormal yeast growth in the mucosa of the female genital tract which is commonly diagnosed in gynecology. The aim of this study was to correlate the frequency of yeasts and their respective species in asymptomatic women with different clinical manifestation of VVC; evaluate possible relationships between number of fungus colonies and symptoms in this pathology. All patients who visited the laboratory within a period of five months, for routine examinations of vaginal secretion, independent of the presence or absence of symptoms of VVC were included in this study. Of these, women with immunodeficiency or with an infection of the genital tract by another agent were excluded. Candida albicans was the most frequently yeast isolated (60%). Among non-C. albicans yeasts, 61.5% were isolated of the asymptomatic women, 38.7% from patients with VVC and 11.1% of those from patients with RVVC. C. albicans was associated with symptoms of VVC and while, the presence of non-C. albicans yeasts with asymptomatic women. However, there was no association between the number of fungal colonies and symptoms.  相似文献

In tropical forests, ants frequently consume fruit pulp around seeds of vertebrate-dispersed plants, which protects the seeds from infection by fungus and pathogens. Seed cleaning behavior by omnivorous ants was observed in the secondary forests of Bogor botanical garden in West Java. Fruit pulp around the seeds of the rambutan Nephelium lappaceum was completely removed by Pheidole plagiaria, Anoplolepis gracilipes, and other ants. When seed cleaners were excluded, however, many seeds were attacked by fungus and died. Seeds that were cleaned by hand, but not by ants, were similarly attacked. Field experiments on seed cleaning by P. plagiaria revealed that the anti-fungal effect was not merely caused by removal of fruit pulp, and that seed cleaning reduced the development of spores and hypha of fungi. We suggest that the workers apply anti-fungal substances to the fruit pulp and seed surface.  相似文献

Social organisms are constantly exposed to infectious agents via physical contact with conspecifics. While previous work has shown that disease susceptibility at the individual and group level is influenced by genetic diversity within and between group members, it remains poorly understood how group-level resistance to pathogens relates directly to individual physiology, defence behaviour and social interactions. We investigated the effects of high versus low genetic diversity on both the individual and collective disease defences in the ant Cardiocondyla obscurior. We compared the antiseptic behaviours (grooming and hygienic behaviour) of workers from genetically homogeneous and diverse colonies after exposure of their brood to the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae. While workers from diverse colonies performed intensive allogrooming and quickly removed larvae covered with live fungal spores from the nest, workers from homogeneous colonies only removed sick larvae late after infection. This difference was not caused by a reduced repertoire of antiseptic behaviours or a generally decreased brood care activity in ants from homogeneous colonies. Our data instead suggest that reduced genetic diversity compromises the ability of Cardiocondyla colonies to quickly detect or react to the presence of pathogenic fungal spores before an infection is established, thereby affecting the dynamics of social immunity in the colony.  相似文献

Histoplasmosis is an endemic and systemic mycosis, caused by the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum var capsulatum. Disseminated disease in immunocompromised patients generally results from the reactivation of latent foci after a prolonged period of asymptomatic infection. We report a case of laryngeal histoplasmosis as the unique clinical manifestation of a progressive form of the disease in a patient with advanced HIV/AIDS disease. Histopathological analysis of laryngeal biopsy smears revealed granulomas containing Histoplasma-like organisms. Treatment with amphotericin B followed by itraconazole resulted in complete remission of laryngeal lesions. To our knowledge, this is the third case report of laryngeal histoplasmosis in a patient with AIDS.  相似文献

Magnaporthe oryzae is a hemibiotrophic fungal pathogen that causes rice (Oryza sativa) blast. Although M. oryzae as a whole infects a wide variety of monocotyledonous hosts, no dicotyledonous plant has been reported as a host. We found that two rice pathogenic strains of M. oryzae, KJ201 and 70-15, interacted differentially with 16 ecotypes of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Strain KJ201 infected all ecotypes with varying degrees of virulence, whereas strain 70-15 caused no symptoms in certain ecotypes. In highly susceptible ecotypes, small chlorotic lesions appeared on infected leaves within 3 d after inoculation and subsequently expanded across the affected leaves. The fungus produced spores in susceptible ecotypes but not in resistant ecotypes. Fungal cultures recovered from necrotic lesions caused the same symptoms in healthy plants, satisfying Koch's postulates. Histochemical analyses showed that infection by the fungus caused an accumulation of reactive oxygen species and eventual cell death. Similar to the infection process in rice, the fungus differentiated to form appressorium and directly penetrated the leaf surface in Arabidopsis. However, the pathogenic mechanism in Arabidopsis appears distinct from that in rice; three fungal genes essential for pathogenicity in rice played only limited roles in causing disease symptoms in Arabidopsis, and the fungus seems to colonize Arabidopsis as a necrotroph through the secretion of phytotoxic compounds, including 9,12-octadecadienoic acid. Expression of PR-1 and PDF1.2 was induced in response to infection by the fungus, suggesting the activation of salicylic acid- and jasmonic acid/ethylene-dependent signaling pathways. However, the roles of these signaling pathways in defense against M. oryzae remain unclear. In combination with the wealth of genetic and genomic resources available for M. oryzae, this newly established pathosystem allows comparison of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying pathogenesis and host defense in two well-studied model plants.  相似文献

The results of the laboratory examination of 2034 patients with meningococcal infection and purulent meningitides, hospitalized during the period of June 1980 to October 1983, revealed that three main etiological agents were responsible for these diseases: meningococci, pneumococci and Haemophilus influenzae. The susceptibility of the patients to different etiological agents was found to depend on their age. Children aged up to 3 years constituted 75% of the patients with meningitis caused by H. influenzae; 50% of the patients with meningococcal infection were children aged up to 5 years; pneumococcal meningitis occurred more frequently in adults. Serogroup A meningococci were found to prevail in patients with meningococcal infection. Besides, in children serogroup C meningococci could be isolated in 24% of cases. Since 1983 the cases of the isolation of strains belonging to serogroup B increased in number. Among the pneumococci responsible for the disease serotypes 1, 19, 6 and in children serotype 12 occurred most frequently.  相似文献

Chromoblastomycosis, a well-documented chronic fungal infection, represents a specific clinical entity with typical warty cutaneous nodules and a worldwide distribution. Although more prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, only a few reports are available from Sri Lanka or from Asia. Five etiologic agents of chromoblastomycosis have been recognized worldwide. Of these the majority of infections have been caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi. During the period from 1952 to 1962, only twelve culturally proven cases of this disease had been recorded from Sri Lanka. The fungus responsible was F. pedrosoi. The present report presents a study of the clinical and mycological features of 71 Sri Lankan patients with chromoblastomycosis for the 16-year period from 1978 to 1993. It documents three etiological agents. Culture identification was made in 69 cases. The three fungal species were Fonsecaea pedrosoi (64), Phialophora verrucosa (3) and a fungus compatible morphologically with F. compacta (2). The isolation of a fungus morphologically compatible with F. compacta is of significance since only 12 cases have been documented in the world's literature so far. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Penicilliosis is a disease caused by Penicillium marneffei, a fungus endemic to Southeast Asia. Prior to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, infection was exceedingly rare, but penicilliosis is currently one of the most common opportunistic infections in persons with HIV/AIDS in some Asian countries. This paper describes the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and epidemiology of this emerging opportunistic infection and will focus on some gaps in our knowledge and directions for future research.  相似文献

Spot blotch, caused by the fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana, is one of the most important diseases on wheat. The effects of silicon (Si) on this wheat disease were studied. Plants of wheat cultivars BR‐18 and BRS‐208 were grown in plastic pots containing Si‐deficient soil amended with either calcium silicate (+Si) or calcium carbonate (?Si). The content of Si in leaf tissue was significantly increased by 90.5% for the +Si treatment. There was no significant difference between Si treatments for calcium content, so variations in Si accounted for differences in the level of resistance to spot blotch. The incubation period was significantly increased by 40% for the +Si treatment. The area under spot blotch progress curve, number of lesions per cm2 of leaf area, and real disease severity significantly decreased by 62, 36 and 43.5% in +Si treatment. There was no significant effect of Si on lesion size. The role played by total soluble phenolics in the increased resistance to spot blotch of plants from both cultivars supplied with Si was not clear. Plants from cultivar BR‐18 supplied with Si showed the highest values for concentration of lignin‐thioglycolic acid derivatives during the most advanced stages of fungus infection. Chitinase activity was high at the most advanced stages of fungus infection on leaves from both cultivars supplied with Si and may have had an effect on fungus growth based on the reduction of the components of resistance evaluated. Peroxidase activity was found to be high only at 96 h after inoculation of both cultivars supplied with Si. Polyphenoloxidase activity had no apparent effect on resistance regardless of Si treatments. Results revealed that supplying Si to wheat plants can increase resistance against spot blotch.  相似文献

Black spot disease of roses caused by the ascomycetous fungus Diplocarpon rosae teleomorph (Marssonina rosae anamorph) is a widespread and devastating disease. Despite considerable progress in the management of black spot disease in the recent years, it is still unclear by which mechanisms this fungus colonises and invades the host system, and without a good knowledge of such infection machineries, it not possible to fully overcome the challenges of D. rosae infection. By exploring research contributions up to date, we highlight in this review the ultrastructure of D. rosae infection cycle in the host cell by emphasising on several aspects related to its in vitro and in vivo germinations, the infection mechanisms of the fungus, the different fungal structures formed in the host cells and the optimum storage conditions for D. rosae to retain its viability and pathogenicity over time. Here, attention is particularly focused on the asexual life cycle of D. rosae, with the sexual cycle being briefly discussed. In addition, a new dimension of research approaches to effectively control black spot disease of roses, that is, how to accurately use the advanced biotechnology tools to speed up the current state of the disease management, is proposed here.  相似文献

Eumycetoma is a chronic progressive disabling and destructive inflammatory disease which is commonly caused by the fungus Madurella mycetomatis. It is characterized by the formation of multiple discharging sinuses. It is usually treated by antifungal agents but it is assumed that the therapeutic efficiency of these agents is reduced by the co-existence of Staphylococcus aureus co-infection developing in these sinuses. This prospective study was conducted to investigate the safety, efficacy and clinical outcome of combined antibiotic and antifungal therapy in eumycetoma patients with superimposed Staphylococcus aureus infection. The study enrolled 337 patients with confirmed M. mycetomatis eumycetoma and S. aureus co-infection. Patients were allocated into three groups; 142 patients received amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and ketoconazole, 93 patients received ciprofloxacin and ketoconazole and 102 patients received ketoconazole only. The study showed that, patients who received amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and ketoconazole treatment had an overall better clinical outcome compared to those who had combined ciprofloxacin and ketoconazole or to those who received ketoconazole only. In this study, 60.6% of the combined amoxicillin-clavulanic acid/ketoconazole group showed complete or partial clinical response to treatment compared to 30.1% in the ciprofloxacin/ketoconazole group and 36.3% in the ketoconazole only group. The study also showed that 64.5% of the patients in the ciprofloxacin/ketoconazole group and 59.8% in the ketoconazole only group had progressive disease and poor outcome. This study showed that the combination of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and ketoconazole treatment is safe and offers good clinical outcome and it is therefore recommended to treat eumycetoma patients with Staphylococcus aureus co-infection.  相似文献

Inoculation with soil samples proved that the fungus causing dry rot is frequently present in field soils in Cheshire and in soil adhering to imported seed tubers. The fungus was viable in soils having a wide range of p H values and in fields which had not grown potatoes for 5-6 years. Other sources of infection include lofts, used sacks, seed boxes, diseased tubers, and knives used for cutting seed potatoes.
Bruised tubers stored in heavily contaminated boxes developed much dry rot; far less disease occurred in unbruised tubers. In boxes containing own-saved seed, healthy tubers in contact with diseased ones remained sound. Bruised tubers in contact with, or contaminated by, diseased tubers contracted dry rot. Cutting seed with a contaminated knife increased the disease seven-fold.
Inoculation of tubers attached to the parent plant showed that little or no infection occurred before lifting. In field trials severe dry rot developed in several varieties 6-8 weeks after lifting.
The results are discussed in relation to seed treatment.  相似文献

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, is the most prevalent invasive fungal disease in South America. Systemic mycoses are the 10th most common cause of death among infectious diseases in Brazil and PCM is responsible for more than 50% of deaths due to fungal infections. PCM is typically treated with sulfonamides, amphotericin B or azoles, although complete eradication of the fungus may not occur and relapsing disease is frequently reported. A 15-mer peptide from the major diagnostic antigen gp43, named P10, can induce a strong T-CD4+ helper-1 immune response in mice. The TEPITOPE algorithm and experimental data have confirmed that most HLA-DR molecules can present P10, which suggests that P10 is a candidate antigen for a PCM vaccine. In the current work, the therapeutic efficacy of plasmid immunization with P10 and/or IL-12 inserts was tested in murine models of PCM. When given prior to or after infection with P. brasiliensis virulent Pb 18 isolate, plasmid-vaccination with P10 and/or IL-12 inserts successfully reduced the fungal burden in lungs of infected mice. In fact, intramuscular administration of a combination of plasmids expressing P10 and IL-12 given weekly for one month, followed by single injections every month for 3 months restored normal lung architecture and eradicated the fungus in mice that were infected one month prior to treatment. The data indicate that immunization with these plasmids is a powerful procedure for prevention and treatment of experimental PCM, with the perspective of being also effective in human patients.  相似文献
