For the control of plant pests, e.g. insects, spraying machines have of late been developed, especially in the U.S.A., with which low dosages of fairly concentrated solutions of toxicants in mineral oils are sprayed. The efficiency of such products is no doubt influenced by the fineness of the spray. An accurate method of determining this fineness was desirable both for the control of the spraying operation and for evaluation of the merits of spraying apparatus.
Knowledge of the average drop size is inadequate in this respect; it is necessary to know the distribution of the oil in droplets of different sizes. A reliable impression of this percentage can be obtained only if a large number of particles are measured. These measurements can be used to plot frequency curves based on number or volume distribution.
A simple microphotographic method is described whereby these measurements can be made both in the laboratory and in the field. The procedure makes it possible to obtain, shortly after spraying, a good idea of the size of the oil drops in the deposit.
An apparatus was designed and constructed to determine the diameter frequency curve and the volume distribution curve of oil droplets deposited in field spraying on coated glass plates.
The method gave characteristic results for field sprayings with the Strawsonizer and a helicopter fitted with a spraying boom and also in the laboratory when using a spraying apparatus with different arrangements of the nozzle.  相似文献

云南省易门、通海和建水产的千只眼(Murraya tetramera Huang)枝叶分别经水蒸汽蒸馏得到精油,以气相色谱-质谱-计算机联用方法进行了定性、定量分析,共鉴定了27个化学成分。从易门产的千只眼精油中分离鉴定了21个化合物,为精油含量的99.69%;从通海产的千只眼精油中分离鉴定了18个化合物,为精油含量的99.44%;从建水产的千只眼精油中鉴定了20个化合物,为精油含量的99.72%。这些成分除石竹烯为倍半萜外,其余化合物都属于单萜或其含氧衍生物。三个产地的千只眼精油中都含主成分柠檬烯和紫苏醛。  相似文献

Bot. 47(10): 838–842. lllus. 1960.—The presence of chitin in the cell walls of the fungus Rhizidiomyces is demonstrated by qualitative analysis of enzymatic and hydrochloric-acid hydrolysates of partially cleaned cell walls. Qualitative examination of the enzymatic and acid hydrolysates did not, however, serve for the detection of cellulose present in the cell walls of Rhizidiomyces. With microchemical tests, both chitin and cellulose can be detected. These microchemical tests served to indicate the localization of the chitin and cellulose in the cell walls of mature plants before and during zoospore discharge.  相似文献

Summary The biodegradation of five weathered crude oils by two species ofAeromonas, (B59-4 and E. BOB) was investigated in varying concentrations of sodium chloride. A minimal salts medium whose NaCl concentration increased serially by 0.5% w/v up to 1.5% w/v was used to investigate the growth of these strains in glucose, and their biodegradation of the crude oils. The latter was also investigated in fresh and aged sea water. Strain B59-4 was more potent than E. BOB in the degradation of all five crude oils and at all four levels of salt concentration tested. The amount of oil degraded by each strain increased initially to a maximum level at 0.5% w/v NaCl, but thereafter decreased with increasing salt concentration, and the patterns were similar to those of aged and fresh sea water, respectively. The Forties and Nigerian crude oils with lower specific gravity, were more readily degraded than the Libyan and Venezuelan with higher specific gravity. The growth of the two strains ofAeromonas in glucose and their biodegradation of crude oils was optimal at 0.5% w/v NaCl, and thereafter decreased with increasing salt concentration of the basal medium.  相似文献

The influence of gravity on the size and mechanical properties of mature leaves on horizontal shoots and etiolated seedlings of Acer saccharum Marsh. (Aceraceae) was examined. Leaves were grouped into three categories regarding their location on shoots (dorsal or “top” T, lateral or “left/right” L/R, and ventral or “bottom” B). Young's modulus E, petiole length L, lamina surface area A and weight P, and the cross-sectional areas of different tissues within petioles were measured for each leaf and were found to be correlated with leaf location (T, L/R, and B): T leaves were smaller and had lower E than their B counterparts; the size and material properties of L/R leaves were intermediate between those of T and B leaves. In general, A, P, and E decreased from the base to the tip of shoots. In addition to anisophylly, the influence of gravity induced petiole bending and torsion and resulted in the horizontal planation of laminae. This was observed for field-grown mature plants and etiolated seedlings. Petiole bending and torsion were interpreted as gravimorphogenetic phenomena. Anatomically, L, E, and petiole deflection angle Fv measured from the vertical were highly correlated with the combined cross-sectional areas of phloem fibers and xylem in petioles of B leaves and when data from all leaves were pooled. It is tentatively advanced that the correlation of E with the transverse areas of phloem fibers and xylem is evidence that either the pattern or the extent of lignification of petiole tissues is influenced by petiole position with respect to gravity.  相似文献

Plant cells produce a vast amount of secondary metabolites. Production of some compounds is restricted to a single species. Some compounds are nearly always found only in certain specific plant organs and during a specific developmental period of the plant. Some secondary metabolites of plants serve as defensive compounds against invading microorganisms. Nowadays, it is attempted to substitute the biological and natural agents with chemically synthesized fungicides. In the present research, the antifungal activities of essential oils of seven medicinal plants on mycelial growth of three soilborne plant pathogenic fungi were investigated. The plants consisted of Zataria multiflora, Thymus carmanicus, Mentha pieperata, Satureja hortensis, Lavandual officinolis, Cuminum cyminum and Azadirachta indica. The first five plants are from the family Labiatae. Examined fungi, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici, Fusarium solani and Rhizoctonia solani are the causal agents of tomato root rot. Essential oils of Z. multiflora, T. carmanicus, M. pieperata, S. hortensis and C. cyminum were extracted by hydro-distillation method. Essential oils of L. officinalis and A. indica were extracted by vapor-distillation method. A completely randomized design with five replicates was used to examine the inhibitory impact of each concentration (300, 600 and 900 ppm) of each essential oil. Poisoned food assay using potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium was employed. Results showed that essential oils of A. indica, Z. multiflora, T. carmanicus and S. hortensis in 900 ppm at 12 days post-inoculation, when the control fungi completely covered the plates, prevented about 90% from mycelial growth of each of the fungi. While, the essential oils of M. pieperata, C. cyminum and L. officinalis in the same concentration and time prevented 54.86, 52.77 and 48.84%, respectively, from F. solani growth. These substances did not prevent from F. oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici and R. solani growth. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of essential oils of T. carmanicus, Z. multiflora and A. indica from R. solani and F. solani growth was 900 and 600 ppm, respectively. In addition, the MIC of essential oils of these plants and essential oil of S. hortensis from F. oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici growth was 900 ppm. The MIC of essential oils of M. pieperata, C. cyminum and L. officinalis from F. solani growth was 900 ppm.  相似文献

Summary A variety of tests indicate that a small genetic region in chromosome 3R encodes at least a part of the bienzyme complex containing the last two enzymes of the pyrimidine biosynthetic pathway in Drosophila melanogaster, Complex U. Electrophoretic variants of the last pathway enzyme map to this region and both Complex U activities are proportionally reduced in flies heterozygous for specific deficeencies of the region. Complex U mutants have been isolated that lack both activities. Characteristics of these mutants are discussed relative to other pyrimidine pathway mutants known in Drosophila melanogaster and in mammals.  相似文献

Eight strains of yeasts (Candida lipolytica, Debaryomyces hansenii, Hansenula anomala, Kloeckera apiculata, Lodderomyces elongisporus, Rhodotorula rubra, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Torulopsis glabrata) were examined for changes in sensitivity to eight essential oils of plants (allspice, cinnamon, clove, garlic, onion, oregano, savory, and thyme) after being sublethally heat stressed. With the exception of garlic oil for all test yeasts, onion oil for S. cerevisiae, and oregano oil for R. rubra, the essential oils at concentrations of up to 200 ppm in recovery media did not interfere with colony formation by unheated cells. However, some oils, at concentrations as low as 25 ppm in recovery media, reduced populations of sublethally heat-stressed cells compared to populations recovered in media containing no test oils. This demonstrates that the yeasts were either metabolically or structurally damaged as a result of being exposed to elevated temperatures and that essential oils prohibited repair of injury. The size (diameter) of colonies produced on oil-supplemented recovery agar by heat-stressed cells was reduced compared to that observed on unsupplemented agar. Pigment production by heated R. rubra was inhibited by oils of oregano, savory, and thyme, but enhanced by garlic and onion oils. The influence of essential oils on survival of yeasts in thermally processed foods and in the enumeration of stressed cells in these foods should not be minimized.  相似文献

The lethal toxicity of major components of the essential oils of Ocimium kilimandscharicum and O. kenyense and of selected blends of these against Sitophilus zeamais and Rhyzopertha dominica were compared with those of the full blends of the essential oils. The compounds were assayed in amounts and proportions present in the minimum 100% lethal dose of the oils. Whereas a major component of O. kilimandscharicum was found to be largely responsible for the toxic action of its essential oil against R. dominica, the results with the other treatments indicated that the toxic action of the essential oils were due to the combined effects of different components, either with or without significant individual toxic action of their own against the insects. The significance of the results and their implication in screening and using plants and their phytochemicals for pest and microbial control are highlighted.  相似文献

Rhizobia have the ability to increase growth of non-legume plants due to the production of phytohormones and protection of plant from diseases and pathogens. However, the practical use of these beneficial bacteria sometimes fails because of their inability to effectively colonize rhizoplane and rhizosphere of inoculated plants. We chose the legume lectins as a factor that allows plants to form associative symbiosis with rhizobia. To test the fact that transgenic tobacco, tomato and rape roots with pea lectin gene may affect specific interaction with rhizobia, transgenic roots have been artificially inoculated by fluorescently-labeled pea rhizobia R. leguminosarum and east galega rhizobia Rhizobium galega. Microscopic and microbiological tests have shown that the number of adhered R. leguminosarum onto tobacco, rape and tomato roots which transformed with pea lectin gene is higher in comparison with the control, but no such effect through inoculation of these plants with R. galegae has been found. This confirms the interaction of R. leguminosarum with pea lectin at the surface of transformed roots. Undoubtedly, the improvement of recognition and attachment processes by using lectins can lead to the achievement of a stable associative relationship between non-symbiotic plants and rhizobia.  相似文献

从5种微绿球藻中鉴别出4个高产油藻种和1个产油量很低的藻种。4种高产油微绿球藻在平台期油脂含量最高,占细胞干重的57%以上,其中三酰基甘油的含量占细胞干重的32.4%-45.2%。分析5种微绿球藻细胞的脂肪酸组成及4种高产油藻三酰基甘油中的脂肪酸组成,发现在高产油藻中,总的饱和脂肪酸和单不饱和脂肪酸的比例达到95%以上,多不饱和脂肪酸在5%以下,而在产油量很低的微绿球藻中多不饱和脂肪酸比例达45%以上。高产油微绿球藻三酰基甘油的多不饱和脂肪酸含量在4%以下,是生物柴油的优质原料,而产油量低的微绿球藻可用于提取C20:5脂肪酸(EPA)。    相似文献

Nuclear-encoded small-subunit (18S) ribosomal RNA genes of Chara australis R. Brown (C. corallina var. nobilis f. nobilis R.D.W.) and Nitella flexilis (L.) Ag. were amplified by polymerase chain reaction, cloned, and completely sequenced. Using structural criteria, the sequences were aligned with 18S ribosomal DNAs (rDNAs) from 11 other chlorophyll b-containing algae and six higher plants (embryophytes). Phylogenetic trees were inferred by distance, neighbor-joining, parsimony, and maximum-likelihood approaches; confidence intervals were estimated by bootstrapping, and nonrandomness of tree structure was confirmed by permutation tests. 18S rDNAs of C. australis and two Nitella species were found to be specifically related and, together with 18S rDNAs of Chlorokybus atmophyticus Geitler, Klebsormidium flaccidum (A. Br.) Silva, Mattox, et Blackwell, and two Coleochaete species, support a robust monophyletic group (Charophyceae). Although most trees favored a specific sister-group relationship between Charophyceae and embryophytes, statistical tests revealed that a sister-group relationship between Charophyceae and Chlorophyceae could not be ruled out. Additional complete sequences from 18S rDNAs of lower land plants may be required to resolve phylogenetic relationships among these organisms.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to formulate six different plant seed oils namely canola, cotton, flax, olive, sesame and soybean as emulsifiable concentrates. The composition of the formulation comprises at least one organic solvent, one surfactant and one plant oil. Physico-chemical properties of the formulated oils (emulsion stability test, cold stability and heat stability tests) were measured. The successfully emulsified oils were evaluated for nematicidal activity against Meloidogyne incognita infecting tomato plants under greenhouse conditions. Emulsified canola oil proved to be the most effective oil as a protectant against M. incognita infection to tomatoes followed by soybean, cotton, flax and sesame oil. In addition, employing a high rate of the tested emulsified oils gave higher activity in suppressing nematodes both in the soil and in tomato roots than using a low rate. Moreover, all tested formulated oils at both rates of application had no adverse effect on the growth of tomato plants except sesame oil which significantly decreased the shoot length when compared to the control. The prepared plant oils might be used as potential sources for sustainable eco-friendly botanical nematicides to protect plants from nematode attack.  相似文献

本文对籽粒苋(Amaranthus cruentus)生长发育与气温、光照、水、肥和土壤含盐量等因子的关系,进行了试验研究,为在生长季节较短的地区(当地无霜期只有100天左右)推广应用于生产提供理论依据和技术措施。R104是一种喜温植物,在日平均温度达到10℃左右,才能出苗,当日平均温上升到20—23℃时,生长最为迅速,当日平均温下降到5℃左右时,生长处于停滞状态。它也是一种喜光的C4植物,在土壤水分不亏缺条件下,光照上升到14万Lx,亦不呈现萎蔫状态,在遮荫条件下,植株生长细弱矮小。适宜的土壤水分和肥力是发挥籽粒苋高产优势的重要条件,在气候温暖、阳光充足的生长季节,适时进行灌溉和施肥,能使它的产量成倍增加,每公顷青饲产量可达100t左右的高产。R104还具有较强的耐盐碱能力,在土壤pH值 8.5,含盐量0.6%以下,仍能正常生长发育,土壤含盐量达到0.8%,生长发育受到影响,产量明显下降。  相似文献

Essential oils from three species of plants comprising three plant families were obtained by Clevenger-type water distillation. The major compounds in these essential oils were identified with GC-MS and their insecticidal activity against adult cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover tested with dosage-mortality bioassays. We examined mortality only for viviparous adults because sizeable aphid populations on cucumber (Cucurbitaceae) hosts are largely produced by these wingless, parthenogenic females. Three of the oils were directly applied to aphid females in randomised blocks at 25?±?2?°C and 60?±?5% R.H. and under a L16:D8 photoperiod. Essential oils were mixed with a non-toxic emulsifying agent, Tween 80. Results show adverse contact effects of essential oils studied in the control of cotton aphid. Probit analysis and LC50 at concentrations at different exposures showed aphids were incapacitated and killed by aliphatic aldehydes, phenols and monocyclic terpenes contained in Azadirachta indica, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Laurus nobilis. LC50 on cotton aphid, for azadirachtin eucalyptus and laurel essential oils were respectively 5389, 9515 and 13730?ppm. In the current study, efficacy in respect to the contact toxicity (LC50) followed the order: A. indica?>?E. camaldulensis?>?L. nobilis after 24?h treatment. Our results show quantitative and qualitative differences in the chemical composition and insecticidal activities of our essential oils. All oils became insect toxic as concentration increased. According to the results, essential oils of all the three plants have the potential to be employed in the pest management programmes that can be used in protection of greenhouse conditions against cotton aphid.  相似文献

Mangrove plants, which develop highly productive forests on tropical–subtropical coastlines and river estuaries, rely mainly on river and sea water currents for their diaspore dispersal. Mangrove diaspores are basically dispersed in brackish to sea waters; thus whether they sink or float during the dispersal period could be changed dynamically, both spatially and temporally, depending on the salinity to which they are exposed, as well as on their specific gravity (SG). We found that the SG of diaspores of two mangrove species, Rhizophora stylosa and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, which are dominant species and form a typical zonation (B. gymnorrhiza in inland areas and R. stylosa in more seaward areas) in the study area, changed spatially and temporally. Bruguiera gymnorrhiza gradually lost its SG in accordance with elapsed time, while R. stylosa lost its SG in the first 6 h and gained gradually according to elapsed time. Hydrodynamic simulation of dispersal patterns, in combination with observed specific gravity changes of both diaspores and river water, demonstrated that the spatio‐temporal pattern of specific gravity change was closely related to the difference in dispersal behaviors between the species. The diaspore of B. gymnorrhiza generally disperses upstream, and covers wider ranges than that of R. stylosa, at least in the early phase of dispersal. These dispersal behaviors agreed well with the distribution pattern of the species across estuaries in the study site. To date, hydrochory has been considered to be a mostly passive process governed by the dynamics of water current and subsequent sediment movement, with fixed diaspore characteristics such as shape and buoyancy. The present study shed new light on an active and dynamic process in hydrochory and found that the buoyancy of diaspores may be controlled by changes in their spatial and temporal SG.  相似文献
