Resuspension in a shallow eutrophic lake   总被引:11,自引:7,他引:11  
The frequency and the importance of wind-induced resuspension were studied in the shallow, eutrophic Lake Arresø, Denmark (41 km2, mean depth 3 m). During storm events in autumn 1988 lake water samples were collected every 2–8 hours by an automatic sampler at a mid-lake station. The concentration of suspended solids and Tot-P was found to increase markedly. During storms up to 2 cm of the superficial sediment was resuspended, and the concentration of resuspended solids in the water column rose to 140 mg l–1. The resuspended particles had a relatively high settling velocity and on average, a relatively short residence time in the water column of 7 hours.A model which describes the concentration of resuspended solids as a function of wind velocity and of settling velocity of the resuspended particles is presented. Using additional wind velocity data from a nearby meteorological station, the model has been used to calculate the frequency of resuspension events and concentration of resuspended solids for the period from May to November 1988.These calculations show that resuspension occurred about 50% of the time. Average flux of suspended solids from the sediment to the water was 300 g m–2 d–1 and during 50% of the time lake water concentration of suspended solids was more than 32 mg l–1. A relationship between concentration of suspended solids and Secchi-depth is presented. Because of resuspension, Secchi-depth in Lake Arresø is reduced to 0.5 m.Resuspension also had a marked effect on Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and P input to the lake water being totally dominated by resuspension events.  相似文献

The production, density and environment of buried seeds and the temperature response of germinating seeds in Trapa natans var. japonica Nakai were ascertained. The mechanism of high reproductivity, tolerance of the plant for eutrophication and the stability of the stand in an eutrophic lake are discussed. The mean fresh weight of seeds was about 7.2 g, and the density of liver and dead seeds in April ranged 66.7 to 80.0 m-2 and 26.7 to 97.8 m-2, respectively. The threshold temperature that breaks dormancy and promotes germination in the lake was the low temperature, 8°C. The dormancy of buried seeds was almost broken under the field condition in January. The rate of germination obtained by the field experiment, and the estimation from the density of buried seed and the number of seeds germinated at the stand, were 87% and 60%, respectively. It was estimated that about 30% of the seedlings died before the floating leaf reached water surface. A rosette produced less than three seeds a year, which were fewer than for another Trapa, but the size of the former was larger. The number of seeds changed year by year, but the size-distribution pattern of seeds did not change with years, nor was it affected by the density of rosettes. The reason why T. natans var. japonica could succeed in eutrophic waters was attributed to reproductive strategy. The stand could recover by increasing the number of rosettes through the great branching ability of the main stem, even when the density of buried seeds was greatly decreased in the previous year.  相似文献

Nutrient availability, in particular of phosphorus (P), is a key factor for the structure and functioning of shallow lakes, and not least the sediment plays an important role by acting as both a nutrient source and sink. We used 21 years of monthly mass balance and lake water data from six shallow (mean depth = 1.2–2.7 m) and fast flushed (mean hydraulic retention time = 0.6–2.6 months) eutrophic Danish lakes (mean summer P concentrations ranging from 0.09 to 0.61 mg/l) to investigate long-term trends in yearly and seasonal patterns of P retention. To one of the lakes, the external P input was reduced by 70% in the early 1990s, whereas none of the other lakes have experienced major changes in external P loading for more than 20 years. All lakes showed a distinct seasonal pattern with high P concentrations and typically negative P retention during summer (up to ?300% of the external loading from May to August). During winter, P retention was overall positive (up to 50% of the external loading from December to April). Internal P loading from the sediment delayed lake recovery by approximately 10 years in the lake with the most recently reduced external loading, but in all the lakes net release of P from the sediment occurred during summer. P release in the six lakes has not abated during the past decade, indicating that the sediment of eutrophic and turbid shallow lakes remains a net source of P during summer. The seasonal variations in P retention became more pronounced with increasing P levels, and retention decreased with increasing temperature, but increased if clear water conditions were established.  相似文献

The seasonal periodicity of planktonic diatoms in a shallow eutrophic lake   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
The seasonal periodicity of four species of planktonic diatoms in a small eutrophic lake in the Shropshire-Cheshire Plain, England, is examined. Diatoms typically dominate the spring increase; a second period of growth follows in the summer months. The growth phases are considered in relation to environmental factors in the mere. Of these, light levels appear to be critical in determining the onset of growth and the size of the population maxima, whilst stratification and turbulence play a leading role in the vertical distribution of the algae, and hence, of the growth conditions to which they are exposed. The thermocline is believed to provide a reservoir of diatoms in summer, maintaining them in a position where they are able to gain maximum advantage from increased wind-induced turbulence. Relative specific differences in growth requirements and in behaviour under varying physical conditions are important in determining which species dominate. Dominance may be modified by the effect of attacks by fungal parasites. It is also shown that, generally, nutrients are present in relative abundance, and only rarely does their availability become a limiting factor. Tt is concluded that diatom growth in this lake is typically subject to physical rather than chemical control.  相似文献

Lake Poyang, a Yangtze-connected lake that is the largest freshwater lake in China, was studied in summer from 2009 to 2012. The primary objective was to investigate the spatial variability of chlorophyll a (chl a) on a whole-lake scale and to identify the key factors affecting phytoplankton growth. Stepwise multiple linear regression and Spearman’s rank correlation analyses showed that the shade index is the major factor determining the spatial distribution of chl a; nutrients don’t explain much variation in chl a, except in the east. The relationships between shade index and chl a varied regionally. Chl a varied inversely with the variation of the shade index, especially in the north and south, reflecting light limitation. However, the correlation was positive in the east due to high chl a concentration negatively affecting light availability, which was promoted by sufficient nutrients. In the center, no factor was found to have an obvious effect on phytoplankton growth, most likely because of human activities and high heterogeneity. These new data on the spatial variability of chl a and its relationship with light availability in Lake Poyang will be crucial to understand chl a regulation and contribute to the knowledge regarding phytoplankton in the Yangtze Basin.  相似文献

The effect of weather on the eutrophication of a shallow lake was estimated by a hydrodynamic lake model coupled with a simple water quality module. The model was applied to Lake Villikkalanjärvi in southern Finland. This shallow, agriculturally loaded lake may stratify during warm and calm periods in summer and as a result oxygen is often consumed from the hypolimnion, causing high internal loading of phosphorus. Vertical mixing and temperature distribution in the lake were simulated by a one-dimensional, horizontally integrated hydrodynamic model. State variables included in the water quality model were dissolved reactive phosphorus, chlorophyll a and dissolved oxygen. The model was first calibrated against observations from 1989 and 1990. Thereafter, simulations were carried out using weather data from the years 1961 to 1988. The results indicated that warm summer periods may cause high chlorophyll a concentrations due to high internal loading. In four years with exceptionally warm summers the model predicted maximum chlorophyll a concentrations almost twice as high as in years without remarkable internal loading. The model simulates accurately temperature and mixing but the reliability of water quality predictions could be improved by adding more factors regulating algal biomass and sediment phosphorus release.  相似文献

A model of energy budget of Lake Bolshoi Okunenok ecosystem was based on the data received during field studies from May through November 1986. The model takes into account 36 components including dissolved organic matter, bacteria, phytoplankton, zooplankton, meiobenthos, macrobenthos, fish, suspended and sediment detritus. The growing season has been divided into 16 intervals according to the number of observations. The balance equation for each live component describes the change in its biomass for a time interval between two successive sampling dates. The change is considered as a balance of energy input with assimilation or feeding, and energy loss due to respiration, excretion, predation, natural mortality, fishery catchment or and emergence of imago insects. For non-live components we estimate an increase and a decrease in their mass due to the activity of living organisms, as well as organic matter exchange between water and sediments. Seasonal value of balance elements for each component are equal to sums of appropriate interval value. Comparison of energy flows through different links of a trophic web has shown that the role of a bacterial-detrial link was extremely important in Lake Bolshoi Okunenok for the growth season of 1986. Detritus constituted 58% of seasonal diet of non-predatory zooplankton, 39% of diet of predatory zooplankton, 50% of diet of planktivorous fish (fry of whitefish) and 92% of diet of benthivorous fish (fry of carp). The contribution of bacteria to the total seasonal decomposition amounted to 46%. Approximately 57% of the forage phytoplankton production, 86% of non-predatory benthos production, and 23-38% of the other trophic groups production were consumed by all grazers. "Coefficient of energy transformation" is proposed. It is calculated as: CET(s, k) = Ps(k)/Pk, where Ps(k) is production of consumers "s", built due to consumption of source "k"; Pk is production of source "k" itself. In Lake Bolshoi Okunenok only 14% of energy built by phytoplankton were accumulated in organic matter of zooplankton due to direct consumption.  相似文献

Peak pore water SRP and iron(II) concentrations were found during summer in surface sediments in the shallow and eutrophic L. Finjasjön, Sweden, and the concentrations generally increased with water depth. The SRP variation in surface sediments (0–2 cm) was correlated with temperature (R2 = 0.82–0.95) and iron(II) showed a correlation with sedimentary carbon on all sites (R2 = 0.42–0.96). In addition, sedimentary Chla, bacterial abundances and production rates in surface sediments (0–2 cm) varied seasonally, with peaks during spring and fall sedimentation. Bacterial production rates were correlated with phosphorus and carbon in the sediment (R2 = 0.90–0.95 and R2 = 0.31–0.95, respectively), indicating a coupling with algal sedimentation. A general increase in sediment Chla and bacterial abundances towards sediments at greater water depth was found. Further, data from 1988–90 reveal that TP and TFe concentrations in the lake were significantly correlated during summer (R2 = 0.81 and 0.76, in the hypolimnion and epilimnion, respectively). The results indicate that the increase in pore water SRP and Fe(II) in surface sediments during summer is regulated by bacterial activity and the input of organic matter. In addition, spatial and temporal variations in pore water composition are mainly influenced by temperature and water depth and the significant correlation between TP and TFe in the water suggests a coupled release from the sediment. These findings support the theory of anoxic microlayer formation at the sediment-water interface.  相似文献

Disturbances caused by rainfall are common in streams with the impact on stream inhabitants determined by the frequency, intensity, and predictability of the event. Here, we examine the response of winter-emerging Chironomidae (Diptera) to extreme flooding disturbance. In August of 2007, a severe flood impacted southeastern Minnesota, imparting stress on aquatic communities. Chironomid pupal exuviae collections were obtained biweekly from 18 southeast Minnesota streams during the following winter to assess resistance and resilience of winter-active chironomids to flooding. Streams examined were divided into moderate (2.5–10 cm), heavy (10–20 cm), or extreme (20+ cm) rainfall categories with rainfall amounts in each category representing total precipitation during the 3-day storm. Post-flood samples were compared to samples obtained from the same localities during prior winters. Our findings contradict studies of responses by Chironomidae to flooding during warmer-water conditions and show that winter-emerging Chironomidae are resistant to stress imposed by summer spates. Significantly more taxa emerged during winter after flooding as compared to historic collections, and the number of species emerging in winter was positively correlated with rainfall severity, indicating that 15 species responded opportunistically to disturbance. This indicates that winter-active Chironomidae may be resistant to increased severity of summer spates associated with climate change predictions.  相似文献

We have studied the diversity of pelagic cyanobacteria in Lake Loosdrecht, The Netherlands, through recovery and analysis of small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences from lake samples and cyanobacterial isolates. We used an adapted protocol for specific amplification of cyanobacterial rDNA for denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis. This protocol enabled direct comparison of cyanobacterial community profiles with overall bacterial profiles. The theoretical amplification specificity of the primers was supported by sequence analysis of DNA from excised DGGE bands. Sequences recovered from these bands, in addition to sequences obtained by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloning from lake DNA as well as from cyanobacterial isolates from the lake, revealed a diverse consortium of cyanobacteria, among which are representatives of the genera Aphanizomenon, Planktothrix, Microcystis and Synechococcus. One numerically important and persistent cyanobacterium in the lake, Prochlorothrix hollandica, appeared to co-occur with an unknown but related species. However, the lake is dominated by filamentous species that originally have been termed 'Oscillatoria limnetica-like'. We show that this is a group of several related cyanobacteria, co-occurring in the lake, which belong to the Limnothrix/Pseudanabaena group. The available variation among the coexisting strains of this group can explain the persistent dominance of the group under severe viral pressure.  相似文献

The temporal and spatial distribution of total nitrogen and total phosphate in the sediments of a shallow eutrophic Chinese lake (Lake Chao), and their relationships with the physical and chemical features of sediments, and their effects on the lake water quality and trophic state, are presented in this paper. The following results were obtained: (1) higher concentration of Tot-N and Tot-P in the sediments occurred in the summer and the autumn seasons; (2) higher annual average Tot-N and Tot-P concentrations were observed in the sediments near the various river mouths and in the western part of the lake; (3) Tot-N and Tot-P concentration in the lake sediments generally increased with increase in lake sediment Eh, pH, and Al2O3, and declined with decrease in lake sediment size diameters and SiO2; and, (4) correlations were observed in both the temporal and spatial distributions between the trophic state, Tot-N and Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and the Tot-N and Tot-P concentration found in the lake sediments.  相似文献

Lakes from Maritime Antarctica are regarded as systems generally inhabited by metazoan plankton capable of imposing a top-down control on the phytoplankton during short periods, while lakes from Continental Antarctica lacking these communities would be typically controlled by scarcity of nutrients, following a bottom-up model. Otero Lake is a highly eutrophic small lake located on the NW of the Antarctic Peninsula, which has no metazoan plankton. During summer 1996, we studied the density, composition and vertical distribution of the phytoplankton community of this lake with respect to various abiotic variables, yet our results demonstrated neither light nor nutrient limitation of the phytoplankton biomass. Densities of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN) and ciliates from three different size categories were also studied. Extremely low densities of HNAN (0–155 ind. ml–1) could be due to feeding competition by bacterivore nanociliates and/or predation by large ciliates. A summer bloom of the phytoflagellate Chlamydomonas aff. celerrima Pascher reached densities tenfold those of previous years (158.103 ind. ml–1), though apparently curtailed by a strong peak of large ciliates (107 ind. ml–1) which would heavily graze on PNAN (phototrophic nanoflagellates). Top-down control can thus occur in this lake during short periods of long hydrologic residence time.  相似文献

The activity patterns and habitat selection of tench in a shallow eutrophic lake were determined by radio telemetry. Environmental variables, including prey availability, depth and vegetational composition were quantified in order to explain observed patterns of distribution. Tench were generally only active at night, foraging on benthic animal prey, particularly chironomid larvae. Feeding fish clearly selected for particular locations although only weak associations with depth and densities of preferred prey were found. In addition, it appears that fish spent a considerable time searching for prey and travelling relatively large distances in the process, with the result that only relatively few prey were ingested during the course of a night. During daylight, fish were almost completely inactive, resting together in favoured locations and displaying a strong association for the littoral emergent vascular plant, Typha angustifolia . This may be because Typha usually grows in relatively deep water and forms stands of relatively widely spaced stems, thus allowing such large fish to penetrate deeply into cover. Management of eutrophic waters to encourage tench should take this habitat preference into account.  相似文献

1. Mesocosm experiments were carried out to examine the relative importance of top down (fish predation) and bottom up (nutrient addition) controls on phytoplankton abundance in a small shallow lake, Little Mere, U.K., in 1998 and 1999. These experiments were part of a series at six sites across Europe. 2. In the 1998 experiment, top‐down processes (through grazing of large Cladocera) were important in determining phytoplankton biomass. The lack of plant refugia for zooplankton was probably important in causing an increasing chlorophyll a concentration even at intermediate fish density. Little Mere normally has abundant macrophytes but they failed to develop substantially during both years. Bottom‐up control was not important in 1998, most probably because of high background nutrient concentrations, as a result of nutrient release from the sediments. 3. In 1999 neither top‐down nor bottom‐up processes were significant in determining phytoplankton biomass. Large cladoceran grazers were absent even in the fish‐free enclosures, probably because dominance of cyanobacteria and high phytoplankton biomass made feeding conditions unsuitable. As in 1998, bottom‐up control of phytoplankton was not important, owing to background nutrient concentrations that were even higher in 1999 than in 1998, perhaps because of the warmer, sunnier weather. 4. The differing outcomes of the two experiments in the same lake with similar experimental designs highlight the importance of starting conditions. These conditions in turn depended on overall weather conditions prior to the experiments.  相似文献

Physico-chemical environmental control of the growth rate ofan algal population, the pennate diatom Asterionella formasaHass., was investigated for a year in natural water. This speciesoccurred in vegetative form in the water column all the time,although its population density varied by five orders of magnitudefrom a maximum of 1.4?106 cells l–1 in February to a minimumof 0.8?101 cells l–1 in August. A mathematical model ofa combination of multiplicative and Liebig types suggested thatvegetative cells were severely limited in their growth rate,reaching almost 80% depression of the maximum rate between Decemberand February by low temperatures and nearly 50% depression inwarm seasons by light intensity. Nutrient limitations were onlyobserved in May, August and September, although they were notas great as by temperature and light intensity in the studylake. Population changing rates of A.formosa determined in thelake were low and agreed well with the estimated growth ratesduring winter, but those in summer were low and disagreed withthe estimated high growth rates. This suggests that populationchange of the species was highly dependent upon the specificgrowth rate in winter, but other factors became predominantin summer.  相似文献

Release of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) from dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP), concentrated by reverse osmosis of water samples from Lough Neagh Northern Ireland, was measured in the presence of enzymes and cultures of lake water bacteria in a basal liquid medium adjusted to the pH of lake water (7.6). No hydrolysis of unfractionated DOP was observed in the presence of alkaline phosphatase but a combination of alkaline phosphatase and phosphodiesterase mineralized 14% of DOP in a 30 day incubation period at 15 °C. A similar amount of mineralization was attained by phytase. Phytase induced the same degree of mineralization in a range of DOP fractions varying from MW > 100 000 to c. 500. A mixed culture of lake water bacteria mineralized 12% of unfractionated DOP. Single cultures of lake water bacteria displayed low mineralizing activity (mean of 49 cultures = 5% DOP hydrolysed). Results indicate that DOP from Lough Neagh in the above molecular weight range is predominantly recalcitrant to bacterial mineralization under natural lake conditions.  相似文献

The interactions between the higher trophic levels in a shallow eutrophic lake were studied during the course of a year. Three fish species determined the main pathways of organic matter flow within the system: the predominantly planktivorous bream (Abramis brama), the obligate planktivorous smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), and the piscivorous pikeperch (Stizostedion lucioperca). Of the thirteen common zooplankton taxa Daphnia hyalina and cyclopoid copepods were utilized most by the planktivorous fish, while the large production of small cladocerans is almost left unutilized.The seasonal variations of production and consumption are large. This is mainly affected by seasonal variation of the water temperature. The production of O + smelt is efficiently utilized by the pikeperch. Being the most important zooplankton consumer, as well as the most important prey group, O + fish plays a key role in the Tjeukemeer food web.  相似文献

The transport of organic matter from the water column to the sediment and the relationship between the dynamics of the settleable fraction and that of the total suspended particulate matter were studied in shallow eutrophic Lake Wingra, Wisconsin. Tripton sedimentation was closely related to the dynamics of seston with a lag of 2 to 4 weeks. Sedimentation rate of tripton ranged from 0 to 8 g m–2 day–1 (in May and August respectively). Relative t0 the standing crop 0f seston the maximum sedimentation rate was 8% seston per day (in September). The annual tripton sedimentation was estimated at 632 g dry weight or 215 g C per m2 which was equivalent t0 55% of the annual phytoplankton production and 42% of the phytoplankton and macrophytes annual production. It was estimated that 70% of the settling organic matter is decomposed annually, consequently only a small fraction 0f tripton is involved in the long term accumulation of bottom deposits. During the symposium Restoration and recovery of shallow lake ecosystems in The Netherlands studies on restoration of eutrophic lakes were addressed and discussed. Many Dutch shallow lakes have received high external loadings of phosphorus through supply water that is influenced by the River Rhine and loadings in The Netherlands. Two important Action Plans (the Rhine Action Plan, the North Sea Action Plan) are now in operation to reduce nutrient emissions. The targets set are not likely to be fully reached, so that supplementary reduction of phosphorus supplied to inland fresh waters will be required. In several shallow lakes such a reduction has been achieved recently, but without leading to discernible recovery. The main causes of delay are phosphorus storage and its subsequent release from sediments and foodweb; however, the remaining extraneous phosphorus supply is often still too high. Supplementary actions are, therefore, called for. A further reduction of phosphorus inputs is suggested, besides supplementary measures proposed, viz. dredging, flushing, biomanipulation, chemomanipulation. Restoration to the past situation via upwelling groundwater appeares to be feasible in some cases. There is a common consensus that each lake behaves differently depending to its morphology, hydrology and history of eutrophication. Therefore each lake has to be studied before restoration measures can be applied. Besides, the ecosystem should not only be studied as a separate entity, but as a part of systems of a higher integration level.  相似文献

Classification of waters using biological quality elements and determination of the degree of deviation from reference levels is a key issue in the Water Framework Directive of EU. Lakes in reference conditions with sufficient biological data are available for several boreal lake types with the exception of naturally eutrophic lakes. An empirical approach is one alternative for estimating the reference conditions of such lakes. We used the water transparency of the naturally eutrophic Lake Tuusulanjärvi recorded in August in the early 1910s to estimate reference values for phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll a concentrations. Three phytoplankton samples during August 2000–2001 corresponded to the estimated reference values for total biomass (<5.6 mg l?1) and chlorophyll a (<28 μg l?1), as did the simultaneous Secchi depths. The phytoplankton assemblage in these samples with 24 eutrophy indicators (17% of the total taxa number) corresponded in general the species list from the early 1900s, which as such could be regarded as reference assemblage. Furthermore, in August 2000, 3 years after intensive fish removal a prominent decrease in cyanobacterial biomass and toxin concentration was observed. The costs of the measures and studies in Lake Tuusulanjärvi during 1989–2003 have been approximately 2.5 million euros.  相似文献
