This investigation involves the comparison of the diversity of understorey vegetation of four desert planted forests with the adjacent desert areas. Spatial and temporal variations in species composition and structure were compared, and alpha and beta diversities were compared for the field data collected from sampled sites. The diversity of native desert species decreased from 66% in desert areas to 44% of the total recorded plants inside the forests. Meanwhile, the percentage of agricultural weed species increased in forests to >twofold more than that recorded in desert areas. Plant communities in forest stands shared <50% of their species with adjacent vegetation in desert stands. The percentage of variation in species composition was >340% in some forests compared with the desert areas. Alpha diversity and β‐diversity were significantly higher in forest stands than in the desert. Spatial and temporal variations in species diversity were correlated with type of tree canopy and irrigation system. Planted forests had significant negative effects on the diversity of native desert shrubs and trees. Using flood irrigation and more spacing between trees might help in conserving the floristic diversity of desert shrubs and trees at the forest floor. 相似文献

Aim This study proposes a process to select plant species that would provide suitable candidates for monitoring climate change impacts in areas where complete biological inventories are lacking. Location Inselberg floras of nine inselberg landscapes (i.e. isolated mountains) in the arid Desert and Nama Karoo biome in Namibia were analysed to develop a selection process. Methods Data from detailed field surveys were summarized to determine species only occurring on inselberg habitats (i.e. inselberg specialists). Detrended correspondence analysis and a step‐by‐step selection process based on species distribution patterns were used to determine species occurring on inselbergs beyond their zonal distribution ranges. Results The systematic selection process initially identified 88 plant species. Based on field observations and published sources eliminating species (1) with a wide distribution elsewhere, (2) distribution influenced by local effects and (3) for which their status of knowledge of distribution was clearly inadequate, this list was further reduced to 25 species. This included southern species occurring on inselbergs likely beyond their zonal distribution, such as Adenolobus garipensis, Aloe dichotoma and Euphorbia gummifera, as well as savanna and escarpment species at their western zonal distribution edge (e.g. Cordia sinensis, Commiphora glaucescens and Moringa ovalifolia). Main conclusions The step‐by‐step selection process proposed in this study to assist with the selection of indicators for climate change provides an objective tool in areas where biodiversity coverage is not adequate and little is known about physiology, growth and reproductive patterns of individual species. As such it introduces a method for preliminary screening of species, but will require further input based on field observations and expert knowledge.

Semimytilus patagonicus is an invasive mussel on the coast of southern Africa and has extended its range in recent years. We asked whether its distribution and abundance are consistent with the abundant-centre hypothesis (ACH). Marginal populations were located by monitoring 33 rocky shore sites in South Africa and southern Namibia in 2021. This revealed no changes to its distributional limits since 2020. At nine of these sites, population demography was measured to allow a comparison of their densities and size structure. Four were central populations on the west coast of South Africa (including the site where the species was first detected in 2009). Four were marginal populations in South Africa: two towards the cold range edge in the north and two towards the warm range edge to the south. The ninth population was in southern Namibia, representing a recent invasion event first detected in 2014. Across the species' South African range, the distribution of its abundance was generally consistent with the ACH, with the greatest abundance at its range centre and a gradual decrease towards the range edges. However, the ultimate marginal population at both its cold and warm range edges showed moderate upticks in abundance compared to the penultimate marginal populations. Additionally, marginal populations in South Africa typically included a greater proportion of large individuals. Recruitment intensity was greater in warm range edge populations than cold range edge populations. The size structure of the population in Namibia resembled those of central populations in South Africa. Moderate increases in densities at the absolute range limits suggest that the species is currently undergoing spread into regions associated with moderately optimal environmental conditions (ultimate range edge sites) after encountering regions associated with suboptimal environmental conditions (penultimate range edge sites). 相似文献

To answer the question whether some inselbergs are better sources thanothers, thus potentially affecting processes in inselberg landscapes,inselberg-matrix affinities and the influence of regional physicalenvironmental parameters (latitude, longitude, distance from coast andmainland)and parameters operating on landscape level (elevation and geology) wereinvestigated. All investigated environmental parameters affected the observedpatternsto some extend. Distance from mainland and geographic position were importantona regional level, while elevation only influenced the observed trends wheninvestigated at a local level. Parameters determining bettersources within the selected study areas and sites, here simply definedasshowing higher floristic affinities with the surrounding, appeared to beinselbergs: (a) in southern Namibia and thus in an inland position; (b) at adistancefrom other mountainous habitats; and (c) of low elevation. Although theimportanceof inselbergs for conservation and maintenanceof biodiversity is evident, this study points towards a complex situation, ruling out the sole effect of any one of the parameters investigated atregionaland landscape level. Further observations and analysis at a local level maygivesome pointers and assist in identifying critical aspects important forconservation and range management. 相似文献

A multiple regression analysis was performed upon selected environmental variables for a series of islands in the British Isles, to establish their effects upon the size of the butterfly fauna, measured as he number of species regularly breeding, SB .
So that the data be normally distributed, the regression analyses were performed upon log10 transformed data only, with the data for outliers, mainland Britain and Ireland, the two largest islands, excluded.
Most highly correlated with the number of butterfly species breeding upon an island is the number breeding within a 25 km radius of the nearest point of the mainland, r2 =0.5941, followed by the correlations with the latitude of the mid-point of the island, r 2 =0.5541, the number of plant species comprising the island Hora, r 2 =0.5225, and the distance separating the island from the mainland, r 2 =0.4514.
A partial correlation analysis confirms the importance of the parameters distance separating the island from the mainland, D1 , and the size of the faunal source S F , and rejects the importance of the size of the flora and the latitude of the island. This is further confirmed by the results of a step-wise regression analysis, the two variables D 1 and SF accounting for 66% of the variation of the butterfly fauna.
If an alternative measure of isolation, D2 , which allows for the geographical clumping of islands, is combined with the variable SF , then 69% of the variation of the butterfly fauna is accounted for. 相似文献

Inland salt lakes are widely distributed in southern Africa: they are particularly common in South Africa, but many occur
in Namibia and Botswana. All are shallow, and most are ephemeral with salinities that are not very high (mostly < 50 g l−1). Fringing zones of halophytes or submerged macrophytes are neither well-developed nor taxonomically diverse. The Cyanobacteria,
especially Nodularia spumigena, often dominate the phytoplankton. The fauna of the Makgadikgadi area (northeast Botswana) is diverse and is similar to that
of East African salt lakes. The aquatic fauna of salt water south of the Makgadikgadi Basin, on the other hand, is extremely
depauperate, has no well-defined assemblage confined to saline waters, and appears mostly to comprise tolerant freshwater
forms. Lovenula falcifera and Metadiaptomus transvaalensis (diaptomid copepods), Moina micrura (Cladocera) and Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifera) are frequently encountered zooplankton species, a few species of insects (Anisops sp., beetles, chironomids and ephydrids) are the principal non-planktonic macroinvertebrates. Artemia ‘salina’ is occasionally present, but may be an introduced form. The avifauna, in contrast to the aquatic macroinvertebrate fauna,
is rich, with the greater and lesser flamingo often common. 相似文献

Rust fungi on Aizoaceae in southern Africa have been examined and reported based on 27 specimens collected during a biodiversity
study and previously collected herbarium specimens. Eight species including five new species have been recognized, and they
are described in detail and illustrated. Together with two additional species in literature, ten species of rust fungi are
now recognized on Aizoaceae in southern Africa.

The Ionian archipelago is the second largest Greek archipelago after the Aegean, but the factors driving plant species diversity in the Ionian islands are still barely known. We used stepwise multiple regressions to investigate the factors affecting plant species diversity in 17 Ionian islands. Generalized dissimilarity modelling was applied to examine variation in the magnitude and rate of species turnover along environmental gradients, as well as to assess the relative importance of geographical and climatic factors in explaining species turnover. The values of the residuals from the ISAR log10‐transfomed models of native and endemic taxa were used as a measure of island floristic diversity. Area was confirmed to be the most powerful single explanatory predictor of all diversity metrics. Mean annual precipitation and temperature, as well as shortest distance to the nearest island are also significant predictors of vascular plant diversity. The island of Kalamos constitutes an important plant diversity hotspot in the Ionian archipelago. The recent formation of the islands, the close proximity to the mainland source and the relatively low dispersal filtering of the Ionian archipelago has resulted in islands with a flora principally comprising common species and a low proportion of endemics. Small islands keep a key role in conservation of plant priority sites. 相似文献

African rituals and beliefs have been recorded by various observers (travelers and anthropologists) in different areas in southern Africa within the last two centuries, and these are useful for interpreting prehistoric rock art (paintings and engravings). Notably, Lichtenstein (1812) recorded rituals among Nguni (who interacted with San) in South Africa, where a hunter took on the form of an animal which was symbolically wounded and which was symbolically killed in the belief that this would contribute to success in a forthcoming hunt. In Namibia, Lebzelter (1934) recorded another ritual in which a San hunter symbolically wounded and symbolically killed an animal represented in a drawing. Such rituals relate to the principle of sympathetic hunting magic. The ethnological evidence is discussed in relation to prehistoric rock art in different areas of southern Africa (Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa, Apollo 11 Cave in Namibia, and Melikane Shelter in Lesotho), and in relation to an important photograph of a ritual presumed to be associated with hunting, recorded at Logageng in the southern Kalahari, South Africa. When taken together with linguistic as well as ethnographic evidence, these sources of information support the view that the so-called trance hypothesis (relating to shamanism) and the principle of sympathetic hunting magic are not mutually exclusive, at least in southern Africa (if not elsewhere). 相似文献

Summary This paper reports the number of plant species on circumscribed fynbos areas (gamma diversity), ranging in size from 0.27 km2 (a site with 364 species) to 471 km2 (2351 species). The composition of the floras of four of these sites was analysed to measure delta diversity, the change in flora from one site to the next. Maximum gamma diversity values fitted a species-area curve log S=2.69+0.25 log A. Gamma diversity is apparently higher than in any of the world's biogeographic zones except perhaps the tropical rain forest, and in other South African sites of areas around 1.0 km2, which have about as many species. High delta diversities are reflected in differences between fynbos floras of 50 to 70 %, in spite of relative proximity; this degree of diversity is apparently unmatched anywhere. The results support the conventional view that fynbos plant diversity is partly a consequence of the peculiar geography of the zone, and of palaeo-climatic change, which have favoured geographic speciation. This paper would not have been possible without the conscientious work of staff at Jonkershoek, especially that of R.A. Haynes and E.F. Kruger. The information on the floras of each area studied here has been built up through decades of field work by various collectors. Identifications of the many difficult taxa are due to taxonomists at the National Herbarium, at the Compton Herbarium, Kirstenbosch and at the Bolus Herbarium, University of Cape Town. M. F. Thompson and E. E. Esterhuysen contributed materially in this respect.Paper presented at the Annual Congress of the South African Association of Botanists, Stellenbosch, January 1979.This work is based partly on the results of the conservation research programme of the South African Department of Forestry and the Botanical Research Institute's programme on fynbos phytosociology, and is published with permission of our respective heads of Departments. 相似文献
