Huxley's rule predicts lower recombination rates in the heterogametic sex than in the homogametic one. The genotyping of Parus major and P. caeruleus families at 8 microsatellite and 4 enzyme loci yielded contradicting data. Significant genotypic disequilibrium was observed between esterase-1, esterase-2 and esterase-3 in adults of P. major and between esterase-2/esterase-3 and esterase-2/microsatellite PK-12 in P. caeruleus. Support comes from linkage analyses of nuclear families. In P. major, the recombination rate of esterase-2/esterase -3 in males is significantly lower than in females (theta(male) = 0.076, theta(female) = 0.145). The opposite is found for the recombination rates of esterase-1/esterase-2 and esterase-2/esterase-3 in P. caeruleus (EST-1/EST-2: theta(female) = 0.218, theta(male) = 0.5, EST-2/EST-3: theta(female) = 0.109, theta(male) = 0.194). We conclude that the basis of differences in recombination rates cannot be heterogamety, per se, but must have multiple genetic causes including chromosomal rearrangments that have evolved after the cladogenesis of the two species.  相似文献

Propylea quatuordecimpunctata is a Palearctic ladybird beetle that has recently become established fortuitously in northeastern North America. This predator has also been cultured by the United States Department of Agriculture from geographically diverse Old World populations and propagated for release in the U.S.A. Massive releases of P. quatuordecimpunctata have not resulted in any recognized established populations, raising a number of questions about its population genetics. We sampled beetles for electrophoretic variation in three feral populations in the U.S.A., one feral population in Europe, one cultured population from Canada, and six cultured populations from the Old World. Of the 31 putative genetic loci resolved, 26 were polymorphic (84%). Mean heterozygosity was 18.32 +/- 2.84% among all loci and was 21.84 +/- 2.89% among only polymorphic loci. Cultured and feral populations showed similar levels of heterozygosity at the 11 loci scored. New World and Old World beetles showed no significant differences in heterozygosities. Wright's fixation index FST was 0.034 +/- 0.021 among feral populations and 0.331 +/- 0.101 among cultured populations. Drift was the major force driving differentiation of cultured beetle populations. Our data do not suggest that the failure of P. quatuordecimpunctata to become established in areas where it was deliberately released was related to a paucity of genie diversity. Few studies are available that analyse variation in dispersal rates between populations. Here we present data on the degree of local recruitment (LR) of great and blue tits ( Parus major. P. caeruleus ) in a large number of nest-box plots in northern Belgium that vary in size, degree of isolation and population density. These plots have been studied for varying lengths of time over the past 40 yr. As expected. LR was higher among male than female birds, and this difference was most pronounced in blue tits. Regardless of species and sex. more local recruits were found in larger plots but also in plots with a higher population density. Thus, LR increased with population size (number of pairs) but levelled off in the largest populations at ca 50% for male birds. LR was higher in forest fragments compared to plots inside continuous forest, suggesting that fragmentation reduces exchange among local populations. However, LR was not related to the degree of isolation of individual fragments. We also found a weak but significant increase in LR with productivity (number of nestlings) of plots, but no relationship with other demographic variables.  相似文献

An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that brood sex ratios are frequently unequal, but the proximate mechanisms underlying this deviation are largely unknown. In the current study we analysed deviation from expected 1:1 sex ratio among dead embryos from unhatched eggs collected from partially unhatched clutches of three passerine bird species. We showed that male embryos were significantly overrepresented among unhatched eggs of great tit Parus major , blue tit P. caeruleus and collared flycatcher Ficedula albicollis . Moreover, the bias in sex ratio differed among species and tended to differ among study years. We discuss several hypotheses to explain the observed male bias among unhatched eggs. We conclude that sex specific embryo mortality may contribute to explain the observed variation in sex ratios in several species of wild birds and that sexing unhatched eggs is important in studies of sex ratio allocation.  相似文献

Electrophoretic surveys of red cell enzyme and serum protein systems representing 21 genetic loci were carried out on 129 blood samples of the Negritos of Pampanga, Central Luzon, the Philippines. Nine (out of 16) red cell enzyme loci and four (out of five) serum protein loci showed polymorphic variation. Low frequencies of ACP 1A, GPTs1, ESD2, and Hp1, and a markedly high frequency of PGM12 were contrasted to those in non-Negrito Filipinos. Variant ESD phenotypes with a slowly migrating isozyme occurred in high frequency. The new allele designated as ESD3Negrito (ESD3N) had a frequency of .10 +/- .019. In AK, a variant phenotype indistinguishable from AK 2-1 was observed in 14% of the sample. In the Gc system, a fast migrating variant was discovered in high frequency which was distinct from Gc Ab and Gc J. The variant allele, denoted GcNegrito (GcN), had a frequency of .21 +/- .025. A relatively high degree of allelic diversity in the Negrito sample was also suggested by the average heterozygosity for 21 loci screened (.165), which is compared to that of the Japanese population (.140).  相似文献

On the origin and rarity of interspecific nest parasitism in birds   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Interspecific nest parasitism is surprisingly rare in birds given the potential advantages for the parasite of exploiting the parental care of other species. One possibility is that chicks will not thrive with the parental care and food of heterospecifics. I simulated parasitism in nonparasitic congeners by switching eggs between nests of three species of titmice (great tit Parus major, blue tit Parus caeruleus, and coal tit Parus ater). The experiment showed that compatibility of parental care was not a constraint preventing parasitism. I also used the model system to compare fitness consequences of inter- and intraspecific nest parasitism, addressing the problem of which form is ancestral. Fledging success (body mass, survival) was higher when an egg was added to the nest of a smaller species than to the nest of a conspecific and also higher when the parasitic chick hatched early rather than late relative to host chicks. This suggests that interspecific nest parasitism may not require a stage of intraspecific nest parasitism before evolving but may start from a larger species directly exploiting the parental care of a smaller species or a species with shorter incubation period directly exploiting a species with longer incubation period.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 25 blue tits Parus caeruleus sampled from two populations of the Grenoble region (France) was assayed for polymorphism with 17 restriction endonucleases. Nine genotypes were found. Several mtDNA genotypes were also analysed by amplification via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing of 903 bp of the cytochrome b gene. The mtDNA polymorphism is greater in P. caeruleus than in other comparable bird species and results from the presence of two clearly differentiated mitochondrial lineages. Using the data of restriction polymorphism, the mean sequence divergence between individuals of the two lineages is 1.23%. Therefore, P. caeruleus should fall into the category II of phylogeographic pattern sensu Avise et al. (1987): discontinuous mtDNA genotypes which co-occur in the same region. P. caeruleus, like humans and other mobile species with high gene flow, seems to have lost its geographic structure in terms of mtDNA phylogeny. This unusual mitochondrial polymorphism can be explained by the recent admixture of two long-term isolated populations. This could be accounted for by two different scenarios. One assumes a simultaneous post-glacial colonization of the Grenoble region by two isolated European populations of P. caeruleus. Alternatively, hybridization between P. caeruleus and P. cyanus could have caused the observed pattern of mtDNA variation.  相似文献

The Mongolian gerbil has become a model organism of increasing importance for the understanding of aging, epilepsy, the process of domestication or sociobiological questions. We report the development and characterization of the first nine polymorphic dinucleotide repeat loci in this species. Average observed heterozygosity and allele number of laboratory animals measured 0.136 (SE = +/-0.065) and 1.78 (SE = +/-0.278) compared to 0.761 (SE = +/-0.025) and 9.2 (SE = +/-0.57) found for a reference group of wild gerbils. The extreme low genetic variation observed in laboratory animals is caused by several severe population size bottlenecks due to the initial founder event and the later establishment of subpopulations. Reduced levels of allelic polymorphism in experimental animals hamper genetic mapping or parental studies. Therefore experiments relying on kinship analyses have to be carried out on wild animals. Estimates of genetic identity and parental exclusion were calculated as Pid = 2.8 x 10(-12) and Pex > 0.999 in wild gerbils. Laboratory gerbil strains show the expected high degree of genetic similarity. However, significant allele frequency differences (P < .001) between American and European gerbils at some microsatellite loci may still allow discrimination between breeding lines.  相似文献

The Agave deserti complex, comprising A. deserti, A. cerulata and A. subsimplex, represents a group of species and subspecies with a near allopatric distribution and clear differences in morphology. Genetic differentiation and taxonomic status with respect to spatial distribution of 14 populations of the complex were analyzed in an effort to understand the evolution and speciation process within the genus. Allelic frequencies, levels of genetic variation, expected heterozygosity (H(S)), proportion of polymorphic loci (P), and genetic differentiation (theta and Nei's genetic distance) were estimated using 41 putative RAPD loci. All three species show high levels of genetic variation (H(S)=0.12-0.29, P=63.4-95.1), and low genetic differentiation between populations and species (theta populations=0.14+/-0.02 (SE); G(st)=0.11+/-0.02). Accordingly, gene flow among populations was estimated as high by three different methods (N(m)=2.91-6.14). Nei's genetic distances between the three species were low compared to the values obtained from other Agavaceae, and there was no clear correlation with taxonomic divisions. In a UPGMA analysis, A. subsimplex and A. cerulata formed exclusive monospecific clusters, whereas the A. deserti populations appear in more than one cluster together with other species. The results were consistent with a pattern of genetic isolation by distance.  相似文献

Commercial exploitation reduced the North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) population from c. 12,000 in the 11th century to around 300 by the 21st century. We examine the effect of this population decline on levels of genetic variation at 16 microsatellite loci and contrast levels of variability to that in a closely related species (E. australis). Of the 13 loci developed from the E. glacialis genome, 100% were polymorphic in E. australis. In contrast, nine loci were polymorphic in E. glacialis and four were fixed. Both allelic diversity (A) and heterozygosity (H) were significantly lower in E. glacialis than E. australis (A = 3.2 +/- 2.6 vs. A= 6.9 +/- 3.3, P < 0.001; H= 0.31 +/- 0.25 vs. H= 0.72 +/- 0.23, P < 0.001, respectively). Bottleneck anlayses indicate that the population is in mutation-drift equilibrium and that a genetic bottleneck did not occur during the most recent decline (18th-20th centuries). Nevertheless, low frequency alleles are relatively uncommon in E. glacialis, suggesting that genetic variability has been reduced in this population. Possible origins of low genetic variability are discussed, including the slow but continual erosion of alleles during the 800-year period of decline.  相似文献

During the last two centuries, the Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) has shown a significant demographic decline as a result of the progressive destruction of its natural habitat, disease epidemics, and uncontrolled hunting. Partial sequencing of the class II MHC DRB1 gene revealed that the Spanish ibex has remarkably low levels of genetic variation at this locus, with only six different DRB1 alleles and an observed heterozygosity of 0.429-0.579. The rates of nonsynonymous vs synonymous substitutions were significantly different in the peptide-binding region (dN/dS=5.347, P=0.002), a feature that indicates that the DRB1 gene is under positive selection. A phylogenetic analysis of the Spanish ibex and a set of domestic goat DRB1 alleles revealed that the reported sequences represent four major allelic lineages. The limited allelic repertoire of the DRB1 gene in the Spanish ibex is likely the direct result of the recent history of population bottlenecks and marked demographic decline of this species. A genetic survey of 13 microsatellite loci was consistent with this idea. The Spanish ibex subspecies C. p. hispanica and C. p. victoriae consistently showed considerably lower levels of microsatellite heterozygosity (Ho=0.184-0.231) and allelic diversity (mean number of alleles per locus=2-2.4) than those reported in other wild ruminants. This study demonstrates the significance of both natural selection and the demographic history of populations in determining patterns of genetic variation at MHC loci. In addition, our results emphasize the importance of locally adapted populations for the preservation of genetic diversity.  相似文献

Inter- and intraspecific variation of two ginseng species Panax ginseng and P. quinquefolius was estimated by studying 159 RAPD and 39 allozyme loci. Parameters of polymorphism and genetic diversity were determined and a tree was constructed to characterize the differences between individual plants, samples, and species. Genetic variation in P. ginseng proved to be lower than in P. quinquefolius. Gene diversity in the total P. ginseng sample was comparable with the mean expected heterozygosity of herbaceous plants. This suggests that wild P. ginseng plants in various areas of the currently fragmented natural habitat and cultivated plants of different origin have retained a significant proportion of their gene pool. The mean heterozygosity calculated per polymorphic locus for the RAPD phenotypes is similar to that of the allozyme loci and may be helpful in estimating gene diversity in populations of rare and endangered plant species.  相似文献

A microsatellite library was developed using genomic DNA of the endangered dusky gopher frog, Rana sevosa. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers and conditions are presented for R. sevosa (eight loci) and two sister taxa — other gopher frogs, Rana capito (seven loci) and crawfish frogs, Rana areolata (three loci). Polymorphism of each microsatellite locus was evaluated for each species. All loci have moderate to high genetic variation in terms of allelic richness (four to 10 alleles per locus), observed heterozygosity (0.595–0.946), and expected heterozygosity (0.531–0.856).  相似文献

Despite their potential ecological and evolutionary importance, factors shaping the composition of bacterial communities in wild vertebrate populations remain poorly understood. The goal of this study was to examine the relative contributions of environmental factors and genetic factors (e.g. species and common origin) to the variation of cloacal bacterial assemblages in wild bird nestlings. We conducted a partial cross-fostering experiment with two passerine species, the great tit Parus major and the blue tit P. caeruleus, sharing similar habitats and breeding biology. Nestlings of the two species were exchanged four days after hatching and cloacal bacteria were sampled nine days later. The structure of cloacal bacterial communities was determined by Ribosomal Intergenic Spacer Analysis. Our results showed that each nestling displayed a unique bacterial community. Furthermore, nestlings raised in the same nest shared significantly similar bacterial communities. The similarity of bacterial community was higher among heterospecific siblings raised within the same nest than between biological siblings raised in separate nests. Effects of common origin between species could not be detected and, if present, were dominated by nest-based short-term environmental effects. Our results show that growth conditions within nests and individually based endogenous factors have significant effects on cloacal bacteria assemblages and could affect post-fledging condition.  相似文献

When birds are attacked by aerial predators they should benefit by adjusting their escape to the prevailing attack situation. One important factor likely to affect escape decisions of prey, to our knowledge not previously studied, is the distance at which the attacking predator is detected. We investigated if great tits Parus major and blue tits P. caeruleus alter their escape behaviour to two different detection distances (2.3 m and 1m) by simulating surprise attacks using a predator model. Both species used the information about detection distance when escaping by increasing the escape angle at the shorter detection distance. In addition, blue tits adjusted to the shorter detection distance by dodging sideways more frequently. Great tits escaped initially steeper and faster than blue tits, whereas blue tits increased escape angle and speed more than great tits along the measured distance after taking wing.  相似文献

Mitochondrial control region sequences from European populations of the blue tit Parus caeruleus were used to reveal the Pleistocene history and the post-glacial recolonization of Europe by the species. The southern subspecies, P. c. ogliastrae was found to represent a stable population with isolation-by-distance structure harboring a lot of genetic variation, and the northern subspecies P. c. caeruleus a recently bottlenecked and expanded population. We suggest that after the last Ice Ages, the subspecies have colonized Europe from two different southern refuges following previously proposed general recolonization routes from the Balkans to northern and Central Europe, and from the Iberian Peninsula north- and eastwards. The two subspecies form a wide secondary contact zone extending from southern Spain to southern France.  相似文献

 We report on the development, genetic characterization and linkage mapping of a battery of SSR (simple sequence repeat) loci in Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla. This study reveals the abundance of SSRs in Eucalyptus, the very high information content of these markers for mapping and individual identification, and demonstrates the feasibility of constructing a comprehensive microsatellite-based linkage map for Eucalyptus. Primer sequence for a set of 20 highly informative EMBRA (Eucalyptus microsatellites from Brazil) loci are made available together with their map position and estimates of the expected heterozygosity and allele size range in these two species. Using genomic library enrichment and anchored-PCR screening prior to sequencing, the efficiency of SSR marker locus development was 63% from sequencing data to operationally useful SSR loci. Absolute transportability between the two species and very high levels of allelic variability and expected heterozygosity (H) were seen at all SSR loci surveyed. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 9 to 26 with an average of 16.3±4.8. The average H of 15 loci was 0.86±0.04, 0.83±0.08 and 0.89±0.04, respectively, for E. urophylla, E. grandis and the combined two-species estimate. In the mapping analysis 16 out of 20 marker loci segregated in a fully informative configuration, allowing the determination of synteny of six homologous linkage groups between the two species. The availability of transportable, multiallelic, PCR-based co-dominant SSR loci represents a dramatic improvement in our ability to carry out detailed population genetic analysis and to search, understand, and manipulate allelic variation at QTLs (quantitative trait loci) in species of Eucalyptus. The endangered vermilion darter (Etheostoma chermocki) is endemic to the Black Warrior River system in the Mobile Basin in Alabama. Restoration and conservation of this species require an understanding of its population genetic structure, which can be characterized using microsatellite DNA. Nine microsatellite loci were developed; eight loci were polymorphic. Although observed heterozygosity was lower than expected heterozygosity in most polymorphic loci, only one locus showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. These nine markers were tested in an additional 24 species of Etheostoma and appear to have sufficient allelic variation to be useful in studies of population genetic structure.  相似文献

We present here an extensive set of data on allelic differences between homologous proteins of Drosophila melanogaster and its sibling species, Drosophila simulans, obtained by nondenaturing one-dimensional, and denaturing two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. The data suggest that, for these two species, (1) approximately 10% of protein-coding loci have no alleles in common in our sample, (2) the extent of genic variation at a locus (mean heterozygosity) within a species is not correlated with the extent of divergence (Nei's genetic distance) at that locus between species, and (3) significant heterogeneity of divergence rates exists for different structural/functional classes of loci. These results are discussed in the context of the dynamics of genetic variation within and between species.  相似文献
