Given sufficient time and limited gene flow, evolutionary lineages tend to transform into separate species. Mechanisms preventing assimilation during repeated gene‐flow events include divergent adaptations and the development of pre‐ or postzygotic isolation. We analysed the morphological and genetic boundaries of three species of the rock lizard clade Darevskiarudis’ (Darevskia rudis, Darevskia valentini, and Darevskia portschinskii) in relation to the environment, and tried to reconstruct evolutionary pathways underlying the observed separation among the species. We studied the geographic distribution of the scalation traits, microsatellite genotypes, and mitochondrial haplotypes. Our analyses showed consistent morphological and genetic patterns at the centre of the ranges for each species, but asymmetric distribution of alleles and scalation characters within the current contact zones among the species. The genetic and morphological diversification of the clade has been shaped during glacial isolation in an area of Southern Caucasus, away from the Black Sea Coast. The ancestral lineage of D. portschinskii separated from the common D. rudis–D. valentini lineage in the middle Pleistocene, and the two latter lineages separated in relatively recent geological time. Neither of the lineages attained complete lineage sorting; moreover, isolation and migration modelling have helped to detect recombinant gene flow from D. rudis to D. portschinskii (but not to D. valentini). This is most likely linked with climatically more similar suitable habitats between D. rudis and D. portschinskii than between D. valentini and the other two species. In itself, the isolation period was insufficient for the development of intrinsic isolation mechanisms in the system studied. The efficacy of intraoperative expansion in reducing the tension of wound closure was tested in young pigs. The young piglet as a model for studying human skin was characterized by finding a close similarity between the modulus of elasticity of young piglet skin and human abdominoplasty and mammaplasty skin (range 12.8 to 23.7 N/mm2 for piglet skin, 14.3 to 19 N/mm2 for human skin). The tension required to close a standardized wound was determined before undermining, after undermining, and finally after intraoperative expansion. These measurements were performed in 10 young pigs with an average weight of 11.5 kg. Undermining the wound edges resulted in a significant decrease in the force required to close the wounds (p less than 0.0001). Intraoperative expansion did not significantly decrease the tension. Previous work showing the importance of site and direction of pull on the tension for wound closure was confirmed in this study. Analysis of variance demonstrated that the tension required to close a standard wound is greater high on the pig's back than near the belly and near the shoulder as opposed to the hip for midflank wounds (p less than 0.0001). Increasing the extent of undermining from 62 to 136 cm2 significantly decreased the tension for wound closure (p less than 0.05). Further undermining did not result in a significant decrease in wound closure tension. In this model, intraoperative expansion offers no advantage over simple undermining. We suggest that the benefit reported by clinicians using intraoperative expansion may derive from an increase in the extent of undermining required to place expanders under the wound margins.  相似文献

Perception and action are based on information from multiple sensory modalities. For instance, both vision and proprioception provide information about hand position, and this information is integrated to generate a single estimate of where the hand is in space. Classically, vision has been thought to dominate this process, with the estimate of hand position relying more on vision than on proprioception. However, an optimal integration model that takes into account the precision of vision and proprioception predicts that the weighting of the two senses varies with direction and that the classical result should only hold for specific spatial directions. Using an adaptation paradigm, we show that, as predicted by this model, the visual-proprioceptive integration varies with direction. Variation with direction was so strong that, in the depth direction, the classical result was reversed: the estimate relies more on proprioception than on vision. These results provide evidence for statistically optimal integration of information from multiple modalities.  相似文献

Shifts in species' distribution and abundance in response to climate change have been well documented, but the underpinning processes are still poorly understood. We present the results of a systematic literature review and meta‐analysis investigating the frequency and importance of different mechanisms by which climate has impacted natural populations. Most studies were from temperate latitudes of North America and Europe; almost half investigated bird populations. We found significantly greater support for indirect, biotic mechanisms than direct, abiotic mechanisms as mediators of the impact of climate on populations. In addition, biotic effects tended to have greater support than abiotic factors in studies of species from higher trophic levels. For primary consumers, the impact of climate was equally mediated by biotic and abiotic mechanisms, whereas for higher level consumers the mechanisms were most frequently biotic, such as predation or food availability. Biotic mechanisms were more frequently supported in studies that reported a directional trend in climate than in studies with no such climatic change, although sample sizes for this comparison were small. We call for more mechanistic studies of climate change impacts on populations, particularly in tropical systems.  相似文献

Although patient confidentiality has been a fundamental ethical principle since the Hippocratic Oath, it is under increasing threat. The main area of confidentiality is patient records. Physicians must be able to store and dispose of medical records securely. Patients should be asked whether some information should be kept out of the record or withheld if information is released. Patient identity should be kept secret during peer review of medical records. Provincial legislation outlines circumstances in which confidential information must be divulged. Because of the "team approach" to care, hospital records may be seen by many health care and administrative personnel. All hospital workers must respect confidentiality, especially when giving out information about patients by telephone or to the media. Research based on medical-record review also creates challenges for confidentiality. Electronic technology and communications are potential major sources of breaches of confidentiality. Computer records must be carefully protected from casual browsing or from unauthorized access. Fax machines and cordless and cellular telephones can allow unauthorized people to see or overhear confidential information. Confidentiality is also a concern in clinical settings, including physicians'' offices and hospitals. Conversations among hospital personnel in elevators or public cafeterias can result in breaches of confidentiality. Patient confidentiality is a right that must be safeguarded by all health care personnel.  相似文献

Tolerance and suppression are distinct components of competition among plants, and recognizing how they affect competitive outcomes is important for understanding the mechanisms and consequences of competition. We used simulations informed by experimental trials to ask whether tolerance or suppression of competitors was more important for the survival of native plants experiencing competition with an exotic invasive species. When competition was pairwise, tolerance and suppression contributed equally to competitive rank in simulations. However, when multiple native genotypes competed together against an invader, the ability to tolerate competition was up to 50 times more important than the ability to suppress the invader. In two-competitor communities the chief advantage of suppressing competitors was a global decrease in their abundance, but this advantage did not exist in communities of multiple competitors – which is more representative of natural conditions – because decreased competitor abundance benefited all plants regardless of their competitive ability. We suggest that this concept is analogous to a ‘demolition derby,' an automotive contest where participants attempt to have the last functional vehicle on the playing field. Because strong suppressors share the benefits of eliminating competitors with other remaining competitors, we propose that tolerance of competitors is more beneficial than suppression when competition occurs in a multiplayer scenario – in a demolition derby and in nature. This finding has implications for our understanding of how competition influences plant species coexistence, plant community structure and invasion outcomes.  相似文献

Estimating leaf temperature distributions (LTDs) in canopies is crucial in forest ecology. Leaf temperature affects the exchange of heat, water, and gases, and it alters the performance of leaf‐dwelling species such as arthropods, including pests and invaders. LTDs provide spatial variation that may allow arthropods to thermoregulate in the face of long‐term changes in mean temperature or incidence of extreme temperatures. Yet, recording LTDs for entire canopies remains challenging. Here, we use an energy‐exchange model (RATP) to examine the relative roles of climatic, structural, and physiological factors in influencing three‐dimensional LTDs in tree canopies. A Morris sensitivity analysis of 13 parameters showed, not surprisingly, that climatic factors had the greatest overall effect on LTDs. In addition, however, structural parameters had greater effects on LTDs than did leaf physiological parameters. Our results suggest that it is possible to infer forest canopy LTDs from the LTDs measured or simulated just at the surface of the canopy cover over a reasonable range of parameter values. This conclusion suggests that remote sensing data can be used to estimate 3D patterns of temperature variation from 2D images of vegetation surface temperatures. Synthesis and applications. Estimating the effects of LTDs on natural plant–insect communities will require extending canopy models beyond their current focus on individual species or crops. These models, however, contain many parameters, and applying the models to new species or to mixed natural canopies depends on identifying the parameters that matter most. Our results suggest that canopy structural parameters are more important determinants of LTDs than are the physiological parameters that tend to receive the most empirical attention.  相似文献

Background: Previous studies have examined the impact of physician gender and gender concordance on preventive care, satisfaction, and communication. Less is known about how physician gender and gender concordance affect care for chronic illnesses, including HIV.Objective: This study sought to determine whether patient-clinician gender concordance (patient and clinician are of the same gender) influences receipt of protease inhibitor (PI) therapy and ratings of care among HIV-infected patients.Methods: We reviewed data from 1860 patients and 397 clinicians in the HIV Cost and Services Utilization Study, a nationally representative the association between gender concordance and time to first PI use, and multivariable logistic regression was utilized to examine the association of gender concordance with patients' problems with care and their overall rating of care.Results: Patients who had a male clinician received PIs earlier than those who had a female clinician (adjusted time ratio = 0.69 for having a male vs having a female clinician; P ≤ 0.01). Gender concordance was not a significant predictor of time to PI use. Gender discordance was associated with problems with feeling respected by clinicians. Female patients with a male clinician were most likely, and female patients with female clinicians were least likely, to report a problem with being treated with respect (P ≤ 0.01 for the interaction term). Gender discordance was not associated with other problems with care or with overall ratings of care.Conclusions: Gender discordance was associated with perceived problems of being treated with respect by clinicians, but not with time to receipt of PIs, overall ratings of care, coordination of care, or obtaining information. The perception of not being respected may represent a significant barrier to care that is particularly worse for women, in that most HIV-infected women receive their care from male clinicians.  相似文献

Protected areas are meant to preserve native local communities within their boundaries, but they are not independent from their surroundings. Impoverished habitat quality in the matrix might influence the species composition within the protected areas through biotic homogenization. The aim of this study was to determine the impacts of matrix quality on species richness and trait composition of bird communities from the Finnish reserve area network and whether the communities are being subject of biotic homogenization due to the lowered quality of the landscape matrix. We used joint species distribution modeling to study how characteristics of the Finnish forest reserves and the quality of their surrounding matrix alter species and trait compositions of forest birds. The proportion of old forest within the reserves was the main factor in explaining the bird community composition, and the bird communities within the reserves did not strongly depend on the quality of the matrix. Yet, in line with the homogenization theory, the beta‐diversity within reserves embedded in low‐quality matrix was lower than that in high‐quality matrix, and the average abundance of regionally abundant species was higher. Influence of habitat quality on bird community composition was largely explained by the species' functional traits. Most importantly, the community specialization index was low, and average body size was high in areas with low proportion of old forest. We conclude that for conserving local bird communities in northern Finnish protected forests, it is currently more important to improve or maintain habitat quality within the reserves than in the surrounding matrix. Nevertheless, we found signals of bird community homogenization, and thus, activities that decrease the quality of the matrix are a threat for bird communities.  相似文献

The amiloride-sensitiveepithelial sodium channel (ENaC) plays a critical role in fluid andelectrolyte homeostasis and is composed of three homologous subunits:, , and . Only heteromultimeric channels made of ENaCare efficiently expressed at the cell surface, resulting in maximallyamiloride-sensitive currents. To study the relative importance ofvarious regions of the - and -subunits for the expression offunctional ENaC channels at the cell surface, we constructedhemagglutinin (HA)-tagged --chimeric subunits composed of -and -subunit regions and coexpressed them with HA-tagged - and-subunits in Xenopus laevis oocytes. The whole cellamiloride-sensitive sodium current (Iami) andsurface expression of channels were assessed in parallel using thetwo-electrode voltage-clamp technique and a chemiluminescence assay.Because coexpression of ENaC resulted in largerIami and surface expression compared withcoexpression of ENaC, we hypothesized that the -subunit ismore important for ENaC trafficking than the -subunit. Usingchimeras, we demonstrated that channel activity is largely preservedwhen the highly conserved second cysteine rich domains (CRD2) of the- and -subunits are exchanged. In contrast, exchanging the wholeextracellular loops of the - and the -subunits largely reducedENaC currents and ENaC expression in the membrane. This indicates thatthere is limited interchangeability between molecular regions of thetwo subunits. Interestingly, our chimera studies demonstrated that theintracellular termini and the two transmembrane domains of ENaC aremore important for the expression of functional channels at the cellsurface than the corresponding regions of ENaC.

Herbivore fitness can be altered by a combination of interacting organisms, such as its food plant, conspecifics, and predators/parasitoids. Here, we tested relative effects of plant species, herbivore intraspecific competition type, and spatial distribution of the herbivore among plant units on herbivore survival and whether parasitoids modified these effects. We used an endophagous bruchine seed predator Callosobruchus maculatus for the herbivore, and a braconid wasp Heterospilus prosopidis for the parasitoid. The survival rate of C. maculatus was measured for each of 16 combinations of two plants (bean species, Vigna unguiculata and V. radiata), two competition types of C. maculatus larvae (contest and scramble), two spatial distributions of hosts [sparse (1 C. maculatus larva per seed over 20 seeds) and dense (2 C. maculatus larvae per seed over ten seeds)], and with/without a parasitoid pair. In the absence of the parasitoid, C. maculatus survival rate was lower with V. radiata and in the contest type. With the parasitoid, the proportion parasitized hosts was independent of total host density. Neither the proportion of parasitized hosts nor host survival rate was affected by plant species or host strain, but they were affected by host spatial distribution. When host distribution was dense, a higher proportion of hosts were parasitized, and C. maculatus survival rate was lower. Here we discuss parasitoid potential as a selective agent for the sparse within-pod distribution of its hosts in the field.  相似文献

Overwhelming evidence supports the importance of sleep for memory consolidation. Medical students are often deprived of sufficient sleep due to large amounts of clinical duties and university load, we therefore investigated how study and sleep habits influence university performance. We performed a questionnaire-based study with 31 medical students of the University of Munich (second and third clinical semesters; surgery and internal medicine). The students kept a diary (in 30-min bins) on their daily schedules (times when they studied by themselves, attended classes, slept, worked on their thesis, or worked to earn money). The project design involved three 2-wk periods (A: during the semester; B: directly before the exam period—pre-exam; C: during the subsequent semester break). Besides the diaries, students completed once questionnaires about their sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]), their chronotype (Munich Chronotype Questionnaire [MCTQ]), and their academic history (previous grades, including the previously achieved preclinical board exam [PBE]). Analysis revealed significant correlations between the actual sleep behavior during the semester (MSdiary; mid-sleep point averaged from the sleep diaries) during the pre-exam period and the achieved grade (p = 0.002) as well as between the grades of the currently taken exam and the PBE (p = 0.002). A regression analysis with MSdiary pre-exam and PBE as predictors in a model explained 42.7% of the variance of the exam grade (effect size 0.745). Interestingly, MSdiary—especially during the pre-exam period—was the strongest predictor for the currently achieved grade, along with the preclinical board exam as a covariate, whereas the chronotype did not significantly influence the exam grade.  相似文献

Abstract. Consequences of habitat fragmentation have garnered much attention over the past few decades. The resulting literature has been useful for understanding how land‐use changes influence population viability and community structure, but we are still hampered by a major aspect of the conceptual framework within which most fragmentation work arises. Specifically, habitat between fragments (‘matrix’) is usually treated as uniform and ecologically irrelevant. However, recent work on animals shows that matrix habitat can profoundly influence within‐fragment dynamics. We review related evidence for plants. Various matrix types (e.g. clear‐cutting, agriculture, or urbanization) can act in different ways to alter resource availability and movement of pollinators, seed dispersers, and herbivores. Inclusion of matrix qualities in fragmentation studies is further complicated since most matrices are not static; sites in which timber harvesting or agriculture occur develop through succession or change as crops are rotated, respectively, such that their influence on within‐fragment processes vary temporally. Also, many plants are not restricted to remnants of original habitat. Using studies of forest understory plants, we summarize work showing how diversity can change significantly through time in matrix. Understanding the persistence of a species across fragmented landscapes will require more attention to matrix habitat, and to the species utilizing the matrix.  相似文献

林下生物量影响因素:幼龄林树种特性比丰富度更重要 生物多样性与生态系统功能的正相关关系已被广泛报道,其主要来源于对草原生态系统的研究。然而,该结论并不一定适用于更复杂的环境,例如具有不同垂直层次的森林。举例而言,已有研究表明上层乔木树种丰富度与林下生产力降低有关。树种丰富度是否会通过增加(由于生境异质性)或降低(通过增强竞争)资源的可利用性进而影响林下生产力,以及林下生产力是否受树种特性的影响更大,这些影响机制都可能会随着时间的推移而改变。此外,研究还表明,丰富度-生产力关系随着环境背景的变化而改变。本研究利用可以操控树种丰富度的实验林场研究了这些不同垂直层位里的时间和环境动态。在中国亚热带森林生物多样性与生态系统功能(BEF-China)研究计划的框架下,我们在3年时间里沿树种丰富度梯度反复采集林下生物量样本,研究了不同环境处理中树种丰富度、树种特性和时间对林下生物量的影响。尽管我们发现乔木层特性对林下生物量有显著和一致的影响,但是树种丰富度对后者却不具有这种影响。另外,在森林结构层之间,可能并不存在单一的、具有普遍性的上层乔木树种丰富度与林下生产力的相关关系,并且与上层乔木相关的环境因素(如透光率)对林下生产力的贡献程度会随着时间而变化。总体而言,我们的结果表明,在研究森林结构层之间的关系时应将时间动态变化考虑在内。  相似文献

The widely accepted hypothesis that the increased 1,2-diacylglycerol (DAG) in stimulated cells is derived from phosphoinositides was tested by comparing the pattern of molecular species of phosphatidylinositol (PI) to that of DAG in mast cells. For any glycerol-based lipid, molecular species are defined by unique combinations of the two fatty acids esterified to glycerol. The quantitative frequency distribution of these molecular species represent a "fingerprint" that provides a sensitive approach to assessing precursor/product relationships. Based on mass, the molecular species fingerprints PI, phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylserine were determined in unstimulated mast cells and compared to that of the DAG found after stimulation by IgE R bridging, compound 48/80 and the Ca+2 ionophore A23187. The molecular species fingerprint of DAG before stimulation was quite different from that of PI.IgE R cross-linking caused a 1.5 to 2-fold increase in DAG mass 1 to 3 min after stimulation with a concomitant shift in the pattern of DAG molecular species to one that bore only a partial resemblance to that of PI suggesting that considerably less than half of the incremental DAG is likely derived from PI. Ten to 20 min after Ag challenge, DAG levels became maximal (3.2- and 2.9-fold, respectively), but its molecular species pattern returned toward that seen in unstimulated cells suggesting that only perhaps 25% of the incremental DAG might be derived from PI. The molecular species fingerprint of DAG much more closely resembled that PC suggesting that as much as 75% of the incremental DAG might be derived from PC. Similar observations were made when 48/80 and A23187 were used as secretory agonists. These experiments indicate that the DAG participating in the "phosphoinositide cycle" represents a quantitatively modest fraction of the DAG accumulating in stimulated mast cells and suggest that mechanisms other than PI hydrolysis, including perhaps a "PC cycle," are more important than previously assumed in causing the rise in DAG during activation.  相似文献
