Testosterone plays an important role in mediating male reproductive trade-offs in many vertebrate species, augmenting muscle and influencing behavior necessary for male–male competition and mating-effort. Among humans, testosterone may also play a key role in facilitating male provisioning of offspring as muscular and neuromuscular performance is deeply influenced by acute changes in testosterone. This study examines acute changes in salivary testosterone among 63 Tsimane men ranging in age from 16 to 80 (mean 38.2) years during one-hour bouts of tree-chopping while clearing horticultural plots. The Tsimane forager-horticulturalists living in the Bolivian Amazon experience high energy expenditure associated with food production, have high levels of parasites and pathogens, and display significantly lower baseline salivary testosterone than age-matched US males. Mixed-effects models controlling for BMI and time of specimen collection reveal increased salivary testosterone (p < 0.001) equivalent to a 48.6% rise, after one hour of tree chopping. Age had no effect on baseline (p = 0.656) or change in testosterone (p = 0.530); self-reported illness did not modify testosterone change (p = 0.488). A comparison of these results to the relative change in testosterone during a competitive soccer tournament in the same population reveals larger relative changes in testosterone following resource production (tree chopping), compared to competition (soccer). These findings highlight the importance of moving beyond a unidimensional focus on changes in testosterone and male–male aggression to investigate the importance of testosterone–behavior interactions across additional male fitness-related activities. Acutely increased testosterone during muscularly intensive horticultural food production may facilitate male productivity and provisioning.  相似文献

Two disparate views of the sexual division of labour have dominated the representation of intra-household resource allocations. These joint and separate interests views differ in their interpretation of the relative roles of men and women, and make different predictions about the extent to which marriage promotes economic efficiency (i.e. maximized household production). Using an experimental “distribution task” stipulating a trade-off between household efficiency and spousal equality in allocating surpluses of meat and money, we examine factors influencing spousal distribution preferences among Tsimane forager-horticulturalists of Bolivia (n = 53 couples). Our primary goal is to understand whether and how access to perfectly fungible and liquid resources – which increases with greater participation in market economies – shifts intra-household distribution preferences. We hypothesize that greater fungibility of money compared to meat results in greater squandering of money for individual fitness gain at a cost to the family. Money therefore requires costly strategies to insure against a partner's claims for consumption. Whereas nearly all Tsimane spouses prefer efficient meat distributions, we find a substantially reduced efficiency preference for money compared to meat controlling for potential confounders (adjusted OR = 0.087, 95% CI: 0.02–0.38). Reported marital conflict over paternal disinvestment is associated with a nearly 13-fold increase in odds of revealing a selfish money distribution preference. Selfish husbands are significantly more likely than other husbands to be paired with selfish wives. Lastly, Tsimane husbands and wives are more likely than Western Europeans to prefer an efficient money distribution, but Tsimane wives are more likely than Western European wives to exhibit a selfish preference. In sum, preferences for the distribution of household production surplus support joint and separate interests views of marriage; a hybrid approach best explains how ecological-, family-, and individual-level factors influence spousal preferences through their effects on perceptions of marginal gains within and outside the household.  相似文献

This paper examines three morphological indicators measuring obesity among a native Amazonian population of foragers-farmers in Bolivia (Tsimane’) and estimates the associations between them and standard covariates of obesity (e.g., socioeconomic status [SES]). We collected annual data from 350 non-pregnant women and 385 men ≥20 years of age from all 311 households in 13 villages during five consecutive years (2002–2006). We used three indicators to measure obesity: body-mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and body fat using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BF-BIA). We ran separate individual random-effect panel multiple regressions for women and men with wealth, acculturation, health, and household food availability as key covariates, and controlled for village and year fixed effects and village × year interaction effects. Although BMI increases by a statistically significant annual growth rate of 0.64% among women and 0.37% among men over the five years, the increase does not yield significant biological meanings. Neither do we find consistent and biologically meaningful covariates associated with adult obesity.  相似文献

Regional declines in insect pollinators have raised concerns about crop pollination. Many pollinator studies use visitation rate (pollinators/time) as a proxy for the quality of crop pollination. Visitation rate estimates are based on observation durations that vary significantly between studies. How observation duration relates to the accuracy of the visitation rate estimate is, however, unknown. We studied this relationship using six day-long observations (06:00 h–19:00 h) in leek-seed production fields (totalling 78 h). We analysed beyond which point in time observing longer did not significantly improve the accuracy of the visitation rate estimate (minimum observation duration). We furthermore explored the relationship between the minimum observation duration and visitation rate, time of day and temperature. We found that the minimum observation duration (mean ± SD: 24 ± 11.9 min) was significantly related to visitation rate, where the observation time required to obtain accurate estimates decreased with increasing visitation rate. Minimum observation duration varied greatly between days and between fields but not within days. Within days, the visitation rates differed significantly only between the hour-intervals 06:00 h–07:00 h (lowest visitation rate) and 09:00 h–11:00 h (highest rate). Minimum observation duration decreased up to around 22 °C beyond which it remained fairly stable. Surprisingly, even after three day-long observations on the same plant we found new pollinator species visiting the flowers, suggesting that species-richness estimates based on plant observations alone probably underestimate true species richness. Because especially between-day variation in visitation rate on single plants can be large, reliable estimates of the pollinator visitation rate during the plant’s flowering time require observations on multiple days. Standardising the number of pollinators rather than the time to observe (standardised pollinator timing approach: time to n-pollinator visits) may provide more consistent accurate assessments of visitation rate, especially for studies that use gradients in visitation rates to examine the contribution of pollinators to crop pollination.  相似文献

The damaging effects of heat stress on male fertility are evident in developing spermatozoa expressed in ejaculates 18–28 days post-stress in mice. Our objectives were to: (1) assess genetic variation in fertility of heat-stressed male mice and (2) determine response to selection for fertility after heat stress in male mice. Mature male mice were exposed to heat stress (35 ± 1 °C; n = 50) or control (21 ± 1 °C; n = 10) conditions for 24 h (day 0) and then hemicastrated for tissue collection. Two periods of mating tests followed, period 1 (from days 3 to 11) when no reductions in fertility were anticipated, and period 2 (days 18–26) when variation in fertility was expected. Period 2 pregnant females were sacrificed in late gestation. Males were indexed by multiplying overall mean ovulation rate by pre-implantation survival and number of pregnant period 2 mates. The five highest and five lowest ranking males were identified as heat stress resistant and susceptible, respectively. Resistant males were 61.2 units superior in the index, 57.5% greater in pregnancy rate, and 57.6 total fetuses greater than susceptible males. Progeny of resistant sires were superior to progeny of susceptible sires in estimated breeding value by 4.5 units for the index, 4.1% for pregnancy rate, and 5.2 fetuses (P < 0.0001). Heritability estimates for the index, pregnancy rate, and number of fetuses ranged from 0.09 to 0.13, suggesting male fertility following heat stress is heritable and responds to selection.  相似文献

Extreme personality traits in humans often have detrimental life consequences, so they have long been supposed to be diseases. However, many other species display personality variants that are maintained due to their fitness advantages; in this case, they are construed as strategies. To examine the fitness costs and benefits of pathological personality traits in humans, we measured features of the A (socially odd, distrustful), B (incentive-seeking, selfish) and C (fearful, inhibited) clusters with the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4 + (PDQ-4 +) in a sample of 738 outpatients. Fitness relevant parameters like mating success, reproductive output, self preservation, and access to status were assessed with the Life Outcome Questionnaire. No fitness advantages were found for high-A subjects. In contrast, high-B subjects tripled low-B subjects with regard to mating success and had 39% more offspring. Further, high-C subjects outperformed low-C subjects in attaining status and avoiding risks. These findings help explain the commonness of some extreme personality traits in humans, and suggest that they should be seen as evolutionary strategies rather than as diseases.  相似文献

The investigation of canine personality has failed to find strong agreement between studies as to its structure. The area has been hampered by a reliance on human personality models and by a tendency to limit the types of dogs used as subjects. These problems were recently addressed during the development of the Monash Canine Personality Questionnaire (MCPQ). In this follow-up study, over 450 participants provided demographic information about themselves and their dog and completed the MCPQ for their dog. Structural Equation Modelling results necessitated reassessing the original data and reanalysis suggested a more succinct questionnaire, the MCPQ-R, to measure five dimensions of canine personality very similar to those revealed in earlier work (extraversion, motivation, training focus, amicability and neuroticism). Owner reports of personality were generally consistent across demographic variables for all five canine personality subscales. There was no association between any subscale score and owner gender or education level, or dog sex or sexual status (desexed or not desexed). Significant, but generally weak associations were found for owner age and Extraversion (r = 0.17, P < 0.001), owner knowledge of their dog and Training Focus (r = 0.22, P < 0.001), time spent inside and Extraversion (r = ?0.13, P = 0.007), dog age and Extraversion (r = 0.14, P = 0.004), Training Focus and Extraversion (r = 0.13, P = 0.007), dog height and Neuroticism (r = ?0.20, P < 0.001) and dog height and Amicability (r = 0.2, P < 0.001), dog weight and Neuroticism (r = ?0.17, P < 0.01) and dog weight and Amicability (r = 0.19, P < 0.01). There were also few differences in personality ratings across recognised purebred dog breed groups, although Working Dogs and Terriers scored significantly more highly on the Extraverted subscale than other groups (P < 0.001) and Working Dogs and Gundogs scored more highly on the Training Focus subscale (P < 0.001). These results are consistent with the view that the MCPQ-R assesses a construct, canine personality, which is relatively stable and comprised of five dimensions.  相似文献

We compared daily visitation frequency indices by 4 large (> 150 g), 7 medium-size (50–150 g), 5 small (30–50 g) and 8 and tiny (< 30 g) frugivorous bird species on fleshy fruits of two native shrubs (Olea europaea subsp. africana and Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. monilifera), two established alien shrubs (Solanum mauritianum and Lantana camara) and two emerging alien shrubs (Myoporum tenuifolium and Pittosporum undulatum) at nine different sites in the Cape Floristic Region. Large, medium-size and tiny birds as groups displayed significantly higher visitation frequency indices on fruits of both emerging alien shrub species than the other shrub species. Small birds as a group displayed insignificantly different visitation frequency indices on fruits of both emerging and established alien shrub species but significantly higher visitation frequency indices on fruits of both emerging and established alien shrub species than on fruits of the native shrub species. However, there were significant differences in foraging frequency indices of the bird species included within each of these body size groups on fruits of the different shrub species. Among the large birds, Columba guinea and among the medium size birds Sturnus vulgaris, Streptopelia senegalensis, Turdus olivaceus and Onychognathus morio all exhibited significantly higher visitation frequency indices on fruits of both emerging alien shrub species than on fruits of the other shrub species. These findings indicate that alien plant control measures should be focused on eradicating localised populations of emerging aliens to limit preferential consumption of their fruits by birds and consequent dispersal of their seeds that germinate readily into natural areas.  相似文献

Personality, that is, individual behavioral tendencies that are relatively stable across situations and time, has been associated with number of offspring in many animals, including humans, suggesting that some personality traits may be under natural selection. However, there are no data on whether these associations between personality and reproductive success extend over more than one generation to numbers of grandchildren. Using a large representative sample of contemporary Americans from the Health and Retirement Study (n = 10,688; mean age 67.7 years), we studied whether personality traits of the Five Factor Model were similarly associated with number of children and grandchildren, or whether antagonistic effects of personality on offspring number and quality lead to specific personality traits differently maximizing short and long-term fitness measures. Higher extraversion, lower conscientiousness, and lower openness to experience were similarly associated with both higher number of children and grandchildren in both sexes. In addition, higher agreeableness was associated with higher number of grand-offspring only. Our results did not indicate any quality–quantity trade-offs in the associations between personality and reproductive success. These findings represent the first robust evidence for any species that personality may affect reproductive success over several generations.  相似文献

The interactions among plants and pollinators are crucial for plant reproduction because they structure gene flow among individual plants and among populations of plants. Throughout the Neotropics there has been a strong increase in recent years in the use of artificial nectar feeders in private nature reserves to encourage ecotourism through prolonged observations of hummingbirds. Currently, there is considerable uncertainty whether artificial feeders have a detrimental effect on plant reproduction through competition or a beneficial effect through facilitation. This uncertainty is disconcerting given that nature reserves harbour many rare and endangered plants whose successful reproduction is a conservation goal. To assess whether nectar feeders affected hummingbird visitation to flowering plants, we determined visitation rates in ten flowering species in five Andean nature reserves in Ecuador. We found that visitation rates tended to be higher within 5 m around the feeders than they were at 100 m, 500 m, or 1.5 km distance to the feeders, therefore indicating that nectar feeders tended to facilitate flower visitation at close distance. Because visitation rates at 100 m and 500 m distance from the feeders did not differ from those at 1.5 km, we suggest that feeders do not draw hummingbirds away from flower resources, but if they have an effect on flower visitation at all, they tend to facilitate flower visitation rather than reduce plant reproduction.  相似文献

The effect of elevated atmospheric CO2 on plant growth has been well-documented in the literature. However, few studies have quantified intra-specific genetic variation in growth response, and the potential for natural and artificial selection to act upon this variation. This study examined intra-specific variation in growth response to elevated CO2 in 29 genotypes of white spruce (Picea glauca), a widely distributed and economically important species of the boreal forest region in North America. Trees were exposed to either ambient (370 μL L?1) or twice-ambient CO2 (740 μL L?1). The opportunity for selection (i.e. the relative variation in fitness) was determined at low and high CO2 levels with size as a measure of fitness and heritability of this variation determined. There was considerable variation among the genotypes in size and response to elevated CO2. The increase in mass at elevated CO2 ranged from 23% to 108% depending upon genotype. In spite of this variation, the genetic correlation between the two environments approached unity, as genotype variance was much greater than the genotype×CO2 variance. Elevated CO2 had no effect on heritability of the size-related traits we examined, and either had no effect on opportunity for selection, or decreased it. We conclude that selection at elevated atmospheric CO2 is unlikely to increase mean plant size in white spruce beyond that observed for present day populations grown at elevated CO2, despite the substantial genetic variation in CO2 response displayed by this species.  相似文献

Studies on the effects of consumption of fruits, vegetables, and seaweeds on the incidence of pancreatic cancer are not conclusive. We examined the association (if any) between the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and seaweeds and the risk of pancreatic cancer in Japan. Data from 32,859 participants registered in the Ohsaki National Health Insurance Cohort Study who were 40–79 years old and free of cancer at baseline were analyzed. Consumption of fruits, vegetables, and seaweeds was assessed at baseline using a self-administered food frequency questionnaire (containing 40 items). Incidences of pancreatic cancer were identified by computer linkage with the Miyagi Prefectural Cancer Registry. During 11 years of follow-up, 137 pancreatic cancers (67 men and 70 women) were identified. The hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) of pancreatic cancer risk for the highest versus the lowest tertile were 0.82 (0.40–1.68, trend P = 0.57) in men and 0.64 (0.35–1.20, trend P = 0.22) in women for total consumption of fruits, 0.89 (0.46–1.73, trend P = 0.76) in men and 0.67 (0.33–1.35, trend P = 0.23) in women for total consumption of vegetables, and 0.92 (0.46–1.84, trend P = 0.81) in men for consumption of seaweeds (results for the consumption of seaweeds in women were not analyzed because of poor reliability), respectively. Total consumption of fruits, vegetables, and seaweeds was not associated with a reduced risk of pancreatic cancer.  相似文献

Anger-prone individuals are volatile and frequently dangerous. Accordingly, inferring the presence of this personality trait in others was important in ancestral human populations. This inference, made under uncertainty, can result in two types of errors: underestimation or overestimation of trait anger. Averaged over evolutionary time, underestimation will have been the more costly error, as the fitness decrements resulting from physical harm or death due to insufficient vigilance are greater than those resulting from lost social opportunities due to excessive caution. We therefore hypothesized that selection has favored an upwards bias in the estimation of others' trait anger relative to estimations of other traits not characterized by such an error asymmetry. Moreover, we hypothesized that additional attributes that i) make the actor more dangerous, or ii) make the observer more vulnerable increase the error asymmetry with regard to inferring anger-proneness, and should therefore correspondingly increase this overestimation bias. In Study 1 (N = 161), a fictitious individual portrayed in a vignette was judged to have higher trait anger than trait disgust, and trait anger ratings were more responsive than trait disgust ratings to behavioral cues of emotionality. In Study 2 (N = 335), participants viewed images of angry or fearful faces. The interaction of factors indicating target's formidability (male sex), target's intent to harm (direct gaze), and perceiver's vulnerability (female sex or high belief in a dangerous world) increased ratings of the target's trait anger but not trait fear.  相似文献

Classification of phenotypic variability in forest dwelling arthropods, especially in applied bioindication, remains difficult due to the complex and synergic ecological interactions. Ecologically, it corresponds with the concept of alternative ontogenies in order to maintain high population fitness. The research on the geobiont Haplothrips subtilissimus (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) morphometric plasticity alongside selected ecological gradients (temperature, humidity, food availability) and the environmental impact in the xerothermous hilly oak wood (Martinský les, SW Slovakia), have revealed that (MAN(C)OVA and Kruskal–Wallis test) the head width (p < 0.001) and anterior pronotum width (p  0.002) as the only statistically significant variables. The Kruskal–Wallis test (non parametric ANOVA) revealed significant variation (more noticeable in males) in ecologically more diverse ecotone stands. A significant correlation (p < 0.001) could be shown between the morphometric parameter pairs “head width” and “anterior pronotum width” for both sexes (0.729 for females and 0.822 for males) and between anterior and posterior pronotum width only for males (0.859). Pillai's statistics revealed an interaction of soil humidity and soil temperature which confirms female body parameters depend on habitat conditions (p = 0.011). Females responded mainly to soil temperature (p = 0.018) and food availability (p = 0.030). Soil humidity interacts with the male's morphology (soil humidity p = 0.040), while the relationship to food availability (Acarina) was not statistically significant (p = 0.350). No body parameter has been significantly affected by environmental stress.  相似文献

Forage selection decisions of herbivores are often complex and dynamic; they are modulated by multiple cues, such as quality, accessibility and abundance of forage plants. To advance the understanding of plant–herbivore interactions, we explored foraging behavior of the alpine lagomorph Royle's pika (Ochotona roylei) in Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, India. Pika bite counts on food plants were recorded through focal sampling in three permanently marked plots. Food plant abundance was recorded by traditional quadrat procedures; forage selection was estimated with Jacob's selection index. Multiple food-choice experiments were conducted to determine whether forage selection criteria would change with variation in food plant composition. We also analyzed leaf morphology and nutrient content in both major food plants and abundantly available non-food plants. Linear regression models were used to test competing hypotheses in order to identify factors governing forage selection. Royle's pika fed primarily on 17 plant species and each forage selection decision was positively modulated by leaf area and negatively modulated by contents of avoided substances (neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin and tannin) in food plants. Furthermore, significance of the interaction term “leaf size × avoided substance” indicates that plants with large leaves were selected only when they had low avoided substance content. The forage selection criteria did not differ between field and laboratory experiments. The parameter estimates of best fit models indicate that the influence of leaf size or amount of avoided substance on pika forage selection was modulated by the magnitude of predation risk.  相似文献

Background: We investigated the magnitude of educational differences in lung and upper aero digestive tract (UADT) cancer mortality in France from 1990 to 2007. Methods: The analyses were based on census data from a representative sample of the French population. Educational level was used as the indicator for socioeconomic status. Educational differences in mortality from lung and UADT cancer were calculated among people aged 30–74 and by birth cohort. Two periods were compared: 1990–1998 and 1999–2007. Mortality rates, hazard ratios and relative indices of inequality (RII) were computed. Results: We found higher lung and UADT cancer mortality among those with less education. Inequalities in male UADT cancer mortality remained stable over time (RII1990–1998 = 0.21 (95% confidence interval 0.15–0.29); RII1999–2007 = 0.17 (0.11–0.26)) whereas inequalities in lung cancer mortality increased among the younger men (RII1990–1998 = 0.48 (0.28–0.83); RII1999–2007 = 0.16 (0.09–0.31)). Among women, inequalities in lung cancer mortality became apparent during the second period with higher mortality among those with less education. This trend was exclusively driven by the younger women, among whom inequalities reached about the same magnitude as among younger men (RII1999–2007 = 0.21 (0.08–0.56)). Conclusion: UADT cancer mortality rates strongly decreased over time for every educational level. This implies that the burden of health associated with socioeconomic inequalities in UADT cancer mortality decreased substantially. Inequalities in lung cancer mortality are increasing among the younger generation and are expected to increase even more. Differences in magnitude of inequalities among men and women may disappear in the coming decades.  相似文献

BackgroundSerum levels of zinc and copper have been proposed to associate with sleep duration. Mechanisms, such as inflammatory processes, have been suggested to relate this association. However, earlier studies have been conducted in small sample sizes. Human studies investigating the suggested associations while controlling for potential confounding factors are lacking.MethodsPopulation-based data consisted of 2570 men (aged 42–60 years) from Eastern Finland. The participants reported an estimate of their sleep duration. The serum levels of zinc (S–Zn), copper (S–Cu) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured. Analysis of covariance was used for multivariate analyses.ResultsS–Zn levels and Zn/Cu ratio were lowest in ≤6 h sleep. S–Cu levels were highest in ≥10 h sleep. Elevated levels (>3.0 mmol/l) of hs-CRP were observed in ≤6 h and ≥10 h sleep. After adjustments for age, cumulative smoking history (pack-years), alcohol consumption (g/week), Human Population Laboratory depression scale scores, physical activity (kcal/day), cardiometabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease history, sleep duration was significantly associated with levels of both S–Cu and hs-CRP. The association with S–Cu remained statistically significant following further adjustment for hs-CRP in the same model.ConclusionsOur data suggests an association between S–Cu and sleep duration in ageing men. Elevated inflammation (measured as serum hs-CRP) does not explain this relationship. Mechanisms underlying the relationship require further investigation, as S–Cu may contribute to sleep regulation through pro-oxidative processes and copper-dependent N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor activity.  相似文献

IntroductionPhysical activity (PA) has been associated with lower risk of cardiovascular diseases, but the evidence linking PA with lower cancer risk is inconclusive. We examined the independent and interactive effects of PA and obesity using body mass index (BMI) as a proxy for obesity, on the risk of developing prostate (PC), postmenopausal breast (BC), colorectal (CRC), ovarian (OC) and uterine (UC) cancers.MethodsWe estimated odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), adjusting for cancer specific confounders, in 6831 self-reported cancer cases and 1992 self-reported cancer-free controls from the Cancer Lifestyle and Evaluation of Risk Study, using unconditional logistic regression.ResultsFor women, BMI was positively associated with UC risk; specifically, obese women (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) had nearly twice the risk of developing UC compared to women with healthy-BMI-range (<25 kg/m2) (OR = 1.99;CI:1.31–3.03). For men, BMI was also positively associated with the risk of developing any cancer type, CRC and PC. In particular, obese men had 37% (OR = 1.37;CI:1.11–1.70), 113% (OR = 2.13;CI:1.55–2.91) and 51% (OR = 1.51;CI:1.17-1.94) higher risks of developing any cancer, CRC and PC respectively, when compared to men with healthy-BMI-range (BMI<25 kg/m2).Among women, PA was inversely associated with the risks of CRC, UC and BC. In particular, the highest level of PA (versus nil activity) was associated with reduced risks of CRC (OR = 0.60;CI:0.44–0.84) and UC (OR = 0.47;CI:0.27–0.80). Reduced risks of BC were associated with low (OR = 0.66;CI:0.51–0.86) and moderate (OR = 0.72;CI:0.57–0.91) levels of PA. There was no association between PA levels and cancer risks for men.We found no evidence of an interaction between BMI and PA in the CLEAR study.ConclusionThese findings suggest that PA and obesity are independent cancer risk factors.  相似文献

One suggested indicator is fluctuating asymmetry (FA), random deviations from perfect symmetry in bilateral bodily traits. A meta-analytically robust negative association between FA and number of lifetime sexual partners has been previously shown in men and women. We examined the relationship between bodily FA across twelve traits and indicators of quantitative mating success in 284 individuals (141 males, age 19–30 years). Two further indicators of DI, minor physical anomalies (MPAs) and asymmetry in palmar atd angles, were also assessed. For men, no significant associations were detected, whereas for women, unexpected positive relationships of FA with the number of lifetime sexual partners and one-night stands emerged. Thus, in a large sample and using a more highly aggregated FA index, our study fails to replicate previous findings, though equivalence testing also did not support deviation from previous meta-analytic estimates, especially for men. No associations were found for MPAs and FA in atd angles in either sex.  相似文献

In addition to the well known “classical” porcine parvovirus (PPV1; responsible for reproductive failure of susceptible sows) several new porcine parvoviruses have been recognized (PPV2, PPV3 and PPV4) in recent years. The genetic variation, characteristics and evolutionary factors shaping these novel PPVs were studied by comparing the complete capsid (cap) genes of PPVs from domestic pigs and wild boars. Using Bayesian coalescent methods we estimated the rate of nucleotide substitution for PPV2, PPV3 and PPV4 to be of the order of 3.86 × 10?4–8.23 × 10?4 subs site?1 year?1, similar to those commonly measured for RNA viruses, although this rate in case of PPV2 is probably influenced by frequent recombination events. Given such rapid evolutionary dynamics, it is likely that novel PPVs will continue to improve their capacity to spread among Suidae hosts worldwide. The mean time to the most recent common ancestor for the sampled genetic diversity of the newly discovered porcine parvoviruses was estimated. The results indicated that novel PPVs originated within approximately the last 70 years. Incongruent phylogenetic relationships of several strains suggested recombination events supported by several recombination-detecting methods and by split-decomposition phylogenetic networks. Analyses of the selective constraints acting on each codon suggest that some regions of PPV cap genes were under positive selection. This study showed that inter- and intraspecies recombination and diversifying selection pressures are prevalent across the cap genes of novel PPVs, and beside host switching and gene flow are important driving forces of their evolution and may be significant factors in the emergence of new viral variants.  相似文献
