Under sex dissociated sperm transfer, females seek spermatophores and pick up sperm without male assistance. In several species males adjust spermatophore deposition rate to the presence of conspecifics. It is not known, however, which factors could favor such elasticity in non-pairing males. In this paper, we compare male response towards conspecifics between the sex dissociated eriophyoid mites Aculus fockeui (Nalepa and Trouessart) and Aculops allotrichus (Nalepa). The species differ significantly in male reproductive strategies and, consequently, the intensity of male–male-competition. Aculus fockeui males deposit spematophores all over the leaves and occasionally leave single spermatophores beside quiescent female nymphs (QFNs). In contrast, A. allotrichus males guard QFNs and encircle them with spermatophores. In this study, males of both species deposited spermatophores close to and apart from the rival spermatophores. Aculops allotrichus males had similar spermatophore output whether they were kept alone or in a group of seven males. They did not change spermatophore output in the presence of five rival spermatophores, a QFN or a QFN and varying number of rivals, either. In contrast, A. fockeui males increased spermatophore output in the presence of rival spermatophores or when on the arena with a QFN the male number increased to eight males. They did not respond, however, to the presence of a QFN and one rival or a QFN alone. The possible effect of the species-specific intensity of male–male competition, population density, the availability of receptive females and the rate of spermatophore output on the flexibility of eriophyoid spermatophore deposition is discussed.  相似文献

Under dissociated sperm transfer, (non-pairing) males deposit spermatophores on a substrate, while females seek spermatophores and pick up sperm on their own. Spermatophore expenditures of non-pairing males should be high, due to the increased uncertainty of sperm uptake by a female. In this study I examined spermatophore expenditures in two eriophyoid species that differed in the degree of dissociation between sexes: (1) Aculus fockeui (Nalepa and Trouessart) males rarely visit quiescent female nymphs (QFNs), and mostly deposit spermatophores all over the leaves, whereas (2) Aculops allotrichus (Nalepa) males guard QFNs for many hours and deposit several spermatophores beside them. Males of both species were collected from the field and tested in solitude. Aculus fockeui males deposited on average 19.1 spermatophores per day, whereas A. allotrichus deposited only 3.6 spermatophores per day, and had a very large coefficient of variation. Males and spermatophores of A. allotrichus were significantly smaller and contained less sperm than those of A. fockeui. In both eriophyoids, spermatophore size was fitted to the size of female genitalia and the height of females. The ratio between the diameter of spermatophore head and the width of a female genital coverflap was 0.6, whereas the ratio between the female leg and the length of spermatophore stalk was 0.5. Several factors could be responsible for the discrepancy in spermatophore expenditures between species. Among other factors, the effects of male size, male reproductive strategy and female genitalia size on spermatophore output and size of spermatophores are discussed.  相似文献

Prey preference of three phytoseiid species,Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten,Amblyseius potentillae (Garman) andA. finlandicus (Oudemans) which occur in Dutch orchards, was analysed with respect to two economically important phytophagous mites, the European red spider mitePanonychus ulmi (Koch), and the apple rust miteAculus schlechtendali (Nalepa). Two types of laboratory experiments were carried out: (1) olfactometer tests to study the response when volatile kairomones of both prey species were offered simultaneously; and (2) predation tests in mixtures of the two prey species and comparison with calculated predation rates, using a model provided with parameters estimated from experiments with each prey species alone. In addition, the diet of field-collected predators was analysed using electrophoresis. For each predator species the results of the different tests were consistent, in thatT. pyri andA. potentillae preferredP. ulmi overA. schlechtendali, whereasA. finlandicus preferredA. schlechtendali overP. ulmi.  相似文献

Summary Prey-selection behaviour of the phytoseiid mite Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten was analysed with a Markovtype model of feeding-state dynamics and feeding-state dependent searching behaviour (Sabelis 1981, 1986, 1989; Metz and Van Batenburg 1985a, b). All behavioural characteristics of the predator which are independent of the feeding state were represented by one parameter. The remaining feeding-state dependent characteristics were represented by a function of the feeding state, with one parameter. The best parameter values to describe a predator-prey interaction were determined by fitting the model to the predation rates in monocultures. Under the assumption that the parameter values are not dependent on the composition of prey species supply, the diet of the predators in mixed cultures was predicted from parameters estimated in monoculture experiments.Two prey types, apple rust mite (Aculus schlechtendali (Nalepa)) adults and European red spider mite (Panonychus ulmi (Koch)) larvae were studied. A large discrepancy was observed between calculated and experimentally determined predation rates of T. pyri in mixed cultures: the predators actually killed 3–7 times more P. ulmi larvae than was predicted by the model.The large difference between observed and predicted predation rates in mixed cultures cannot be explained by changes in the behaviour of the prey species as a result of being together. Therefore, it seems likely that the prey selection behaviour of the predator was different when prey species were presented together than when presented singly. Apparently the predatory mite T. pyri prefers P. ulmi to S. schlechtendali.  相似文献

To reveal evolutionary relationships and the rate of divergence of lanternfishes in the tribe Electronini (Myctophidae), analysis of sequence of cox 1 mtDNA fragment in three genera (12 species) of the tribe and in a closely related genus Myctophum (9 species) was performed. The results support the tribe monophyly; however, the divergence within it appeared to be not profound: genetic distances between genera and subgenera are smaller than between species within Myctophum and other genera of myctophids. In subgenera of Protomyctophum, species formation has obviously not completed since interspecies distances in them (0.5–4.7%) are comparable to estimates of intraspecific variation in other lanternfishes. Minimal genetic differences were found between species P. (Hierops) arcticum and P. (H.) subparallelum, whose ranges at the present time are isolated in the northern and southern hemispheres. After calibration of the molecular clock, the time of isolation of these two species can be dated to the Middle Pleistocene. Weak tribe diversification indicates its evolutionary youth, which can be related to the absence of efficient hydrographic barriers for isolation. The data obtained do not permit to consider tribe members as the most primitive in the family Myctophidae.  相似文献

The predators were obtained from an orchard where the phytophagous prey mitesPanonychus ulmi (Koch) andAculus schlechtendali (Nalepa) were present in various density ratios.Esterases of both prey species were identified in the predators, but on all sampling datesP. ulmi esterases were discovered much more frequently than those ofA. schlechtendali. The spatial distribution of three phytophagous mites,Panonychus ulmi (Koch),Tetranychus urticae Koch andAculus schlechtendali (Nalepa), and two predacious mites,Zetzellia mali (Ewing) andAmblyseius fallacis (Garman), and the effect of pyrethroid lambdacyhalothrin applications on mite spatial dispersion were investigated over a 3-year period in an apple orchard in Ontario. The index of dispersion and the slope of Taylor's power law were used to evaluate dispersion patterns of mites. Panonychus ulmi showed that between-tree spatial variation decreased with an increase of population densities, whereas between-leaf variation increased with population densities. With all other four species it appeared that between-tree variation is much greater than between-leaf variation at all field population density levels. The values ofb by Taylor's power law suggested that all five species of mites are aggregated, but that in generalP. ulmi andT. urticae (b=1.427–1.872) are more aggregated than their predators (b=1.254–1.393). Taylor's regression technique suggests that pyrethroid applications causedP. ulmi, T. urticae, Z. mali andA. fallacis to be less aggregated whileA. schlechtendali was more aggregated. The impact of changes in mite spatial distribution following pyrethroid applications on sampling plans is discussed.  相似文献

The tribe Ulomini of Korean Tenebrionidae is reviewed taxonomically. Korean Ulomini recorded to three genera and six species, Cneocnemis laminipes Gebien, Uloma marseuli Nakane, U. latimanus Kolbe, U. excisa Nakane, U. bonzica Marseul, Eutochia lateralis (Boheman). We have found that U. exciza was misidentified U. bonzica, and E. lateralis was not distributed in Korea as the result of this study. We confirm that two genera and four species are distributed in Korea. A key to diagnosis of the genera and species, and figures of these species are presented.  相似文献

The tribe Oxyptilini of the family Pterophoridae in Korea is reviewed. Four species, Capperia trichodactyla (Denis & Schiffermüller 1775), Oxyptilus chrysodactylus ([Denis & Schiffermüller] 1775), Procapperia pelecyntes (Meyrick 1908), and Tomotilus celebrates (Meyrick 1932) comb. nov., are newly reported from Korea. All recognized species are described with taxonomic notes and illustrations including male and female genitalia. Keys to the species are also presented.  相似文献

Eight genera and 16 species of the Korean Cidariini, a tribe of Larentiinae (Lepidoptera, Geometridae), were revised: Dysstroma Hübner, Paradysstroma Choi, Callabraxas Butler, Thera Stephens, Heterothera Inoue, Pennithera Viidalepp, Polythrena Guenée and Xenortholitha Inoue. Pennithera comis (Butler) was newly added to the Korean fauna. Diagnostic and phylogenetic characters supporting the monophyly of the genera and a key to the genera were provided. For the species, diagnoses with figures of male and female genitalia and distributional data with maps in Korea, and taxonomic remarks were provided.  相似文献

Free amino acids and γ-glutamyl peptides have been examined in 22 species of Iridaceae. 3-(3′-Carboxyphenyl)alanine and 3′-carboxyphenylglycine, previously known from the tribes Irideae and Tigridideae in the subfamily Iridodeae have been identified also in the tribe Mariceae of Iridoideae and the genera Bobartia, Orthrosanthus and Libertia of the subfamily Sisyrinchioideae. γ-Glutamyl peptides, previously known from the tribe Irideae, have been found also in the tribe Mariceae, both tribes being from subfamily Iridoideae. γ-Glutamyl-S-methylcysteine, γ-glutamylmethionine and the corresponding sulphoxides are the dominating γ-glutamyl peptides in the genera Dietes, Gynandriris, Moraea (tribe Irideae), Neomarica and Trimezia (tribe Mariceae), whereas γ-glutamyl peptides with non-sulphur amino acids are predominant in genera Ferraria, Hermodactylus, Homeria, Iris, Iridodyctyum and Xiphium (tribe Irideae). Dietes robisoniana, endemic to Lord Howe Island, has the same technical characters as other Dietes species from Southern Africa. The results are discussed in relation to botanical classification of and within the subfamilies Iridoideae and Sisyrinchoideae.  相似文献

A new species is described and illustrated under the name of Strongylium liangi sp. n. (CHINA: Yunnan). Phylogenetic relationships between two New World Syrphinae taxa (Diptera, Syrphidae), i.e. the highly diverse genus Ocyptamus and the large genus Toxomerus, were analysed based on molecular characters. The monophyly of both taxa was tested and the taxonomic status of included subgenera and species groups was examined. Toxomerus constitutes the monogeneric tribe Toxomerini with more than 140 described species, while Ocyptamus (tribe Syrphini) is a very diverse genus (over 300 spp.) with multiple recognised subgenera and species groups. Sequence data from three gene regions were used: the mitochondrial protein-coding gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and the nuclear 28S and 18S ribosomal RNA genes. The secondary structure of two expansion segments (D2, D3) of the ribosomal 28S RNA gene is presented for the family Syrphidae and used for the first time in a multiple sequence alignment. Molecular data were analysed using parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. Toxomerus was always recovered as monophyletic within Ocyptamus, and relationships to other New World taxa such as Salpingogaster (Eosalpingogaster) were well-supported. Only the subgenera and species groups of Ocyptamus were consistently recovered as monophyletic lineages, thus the apparent non-monophyly of Ocyptamus demands reclassification of this clade.  相似文献
